  • Explore the world at a comfortable pace, regardless if it’s your first tour or you’re a seasoned traveler

Moreover, the inclusion of local meals adds to the cultural immersion, enabling you to enjoy the local flavors and fully engage your senses in this grand adventure.

Choosing the bus tour that best fits your preferences is key to ensuring an enjoyable travel experience. Take into account the following factors when making your decision:

  • Group size: Smaller groups offer a more personalized experience and access to unique destinations.
  • Hotel location: Make sure the hotels used in the bus tour are near the main attractions rather than on the outskirts of cities.
  • Company policies: Always review the company’s policies on cancellations, transfers, and refunds before finalizing your choice.

This approach ensures not only a trip tailored to your preferences but also a tour that delivers peace of mind.

The expertise and experience of your tour director play a significant role in shaping your travel experience. An expert tour director is not just a guide but a pivotal figure in maintaining seamless tours. They are there to swiftly resolve any travel issues that may arise, ensuring your journey is as smooth as possible.

With their in-depth knowledge and ability to manage client relationships effectively, you can focus on immersing yourself in the journey and creating lasting memories.

One of the joys of traveling is immersing yourself in local culture, and food plays a key role in this cultural exploration. Senior bus tours frequently incorporate local dishes in their meal plans, providing an authentic taste of local cuisine and enriching the overall travel experience.

From bustling food markets to quaint local eateries, these culinary experiences offer a deeper understanding of the local culture and a chance for you to savor the local flavors.

Top Destinations for Senior Bus Tours

As a discerning senior traveler, you should seek out bus tour itineraries that feature attractions of genuine interest to you, rather than those selected merely for the convenience of the tour operator. Popular destinations for senior bus tours encompass Australia, New Zealand, and North America, each offering its own unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance.

Moreover, a specific focus for senior bus tours is on slow-paced city explorations, aiming to provide a mix of educational opportunities and leisurely adventure. Let’s investigate further some of the top destinations that you might want to consider.

Firstly, we have senior-friendly tours to explore the scenic beauty and wildlife of national parks offer an unrivaled experience. Imagine embarking on a comprehensive nine-day bus tour itinerary that includes visits to Sequoia, Kings Canyon, Yosemite, Death Valley National Parks, and Antelope Canyon. Or perhaps a hiking tour of Bryce and Zion National Parks, featuring ancient red rock formations and educational insights into the parks’ history.

These tours present scenic beauty, wildlife, and informative experiences that will create unforgettable memories.

If the rhythmic lull of the sea calls to you, then coastal bus tours might be your ideal choice. Explore the renowned Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, with city tour highlights including:

  • A guided visit to notable attractions such as the Golden Gate Bridge
  • Alcatraz Island

The tour extends to the East Coast, where you can explore the quaint cities and towns of New England, known for their coastal beauty and historical significance. Moreover, these tours strike a balance between guided sightseeing and relaxation, tailored for your comfort and enjoyment.

Likewise, for those interested in exploring rich cultural and historical heritage, St. Petersburg offers an enticing prospect. A six-day bus tour allows you to comfortably discover various neighborhoods and historic landmarks, including a visit to the renowned Salvador Dalí Museum.

The slow-paced nature of these tours allows you to immerse yourself in St. Petersburg’s cultural offerings at a relaxed and enjoyable pace.

The Comforts of Senior-Friendly Accommodations

Accommodations for senior tours are chosen with careful consideration to ensure comfort and security. Selected for their central locations, these hotels also adhere to ADA regulations, providing peace of mind to senior travelers. High-quality mattresses, spacious furniture, and quiet rooms situated away from noisy areas cater to the comfort needs of senior guests.

Let’s further examine these accommodations.

The hotels selected for senior bus tours in Salt Lake City provide a delightful fusion of charm and convenience. Besides accessible features like roll-in showers, grab bars, and lowered controls, these accommodations also offer a comfortable environment that assures relaxation and rest.

Simultaneously, some tours even combine the ease of motorcoach transportation, access to renowned restaurants, and a diverse cultural scene to highlight the convenience and charm offered.

Safety and comfort are paramount in senior-friendly accommodations. Therefore, these hotels are equipped with ADA-compliant features. Accessible guestrooms are designed with features like:

  • Wider doors
  • Hardware operable with one hand
  • Visual fire alarms
  • Bed shakers for alarms
  • Other aids to facilitate communication and safety alerts

Accessible parking, and controls for heating, air conditioning, and faucets that do not require tight pinching or twisting to operate accommodate guests’ varying physical abilities.

Leisurely Paced Itineraries Designed for Seniors

Senior travel itineraries are designed to offer a balance between guided sightseeing, ample relaxation time, and opportunities for independent exploration. The pace of each bus tour is carefully considered to allow seniors to fully engage with and savor each destination without feeling rushed. To further ensure a restful and comfortable travel experience, itineraries often include arrangements for multi-night stays at the same hotel, reducing the need for frequent packing and unpacking, while allowing ample time to rest.

Let’s take a more detailed look at these itineraries.

Pace-tailored tours for seniors allow them to immerse themselves in destinations with gentle to moderate walks, enjoying sights without pressure. These tours are crafted to ensure a leisurely pace during city explorations, favoring less walking and more engaged learning experiences. The schedules are designed to offer optimal enjoyment of each sight, scheduling visits for the best time to avoid crowds.

Prioritizing the comfort of senior travelers, travel days are divided into shorter segments with plenty of time for rest and meals.

The inclusion of free time in the itinerary gives seniors the autonomy to pursue their individual interests, be it exploring local culture, historical sites, or simply basking in the leisure of the destination. Senior-oriented tours recognize that travelers have varied preferences, hence they frequently include options for free time to cater to personal exploration or relaxation needs.

These moments of personal liberty during travel allow for a balanced experience of guided touring and self-directed enjoyment.

Senior travel tours frequently include group activities that foster camaraderie and collective experiences among participants. These tours promote fellowship and connection by bringing together like-minded seniors to create lasting friendships and shared memories. Whether it’s a group hike, a guided tour of a museum, or a shared meal at a local eatery, these group activities can enhance the social aspect of the tour experience.

Ensuring Safety and Security on Your Journey

Safety and security are paramount in senior tours. These tours offer:

  • Rigorous health and safety guidelines established by reputable travel councils
  • Professional and experienced tour directors who play a critical role in assisting with any needs and ensuring the safety and security of senior travelers
  • Senior-friendly hotels that streamline check-in and check-out processes and have provisions in place for medical emergencies

Let’s examine these safety measures in more depth.

Small group sizes, accessible accommodations, and professional drivers all contribute to a safe and secure travel experience. Senior travel groups are intentionally kept small to enhance personal attention and increase the overall security of the group. Moreover, the coaches utilized are operated by professional and reliable companies, ensuring the safety and comfort of travelers with trusted drivers. This makes them a great group option for seniors.

And of course, the on-the-road support teams are there to monitor seniors’ flights for delays or issues and provide alternative arrangements when necessary.

On-the-road support ensures any concerns or issues are swiftly addressed during the journey. Support teams monitor seniors’ flights for delays or issues, providing alternative arrangements when necessary. Also, understanding the tour guide’s compensation structure can ensure that your experience is prioritized over the promotion of optional excursions.

With such support, you can focus on enjoying your journey, confident that any concerns will be promptly addressed.

  • Sightseeing tours allow seniors to explore scenic locations, national parks, and other outdoor attractions.
  • Themed tours provide seniors with a unique experience by taking them to places related to a specific theme, such as history, culture, or nature.

National Parks Tours

National Parks Tours offer a great way for seniors to explore and experience the beauty of several different parks from the convenience of a tour bus. Many companies provide packages that include visits to some of America’s most stunning locations, including Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier National Park and more. Depending on the package chosen, these tours may include visits to other natural attractions as well, such as waterfalls and mountains .

National Parks Tours are typically all-inclusive trips, which can make them attractive to budget-minded travelers. Accommodations are usually included in the overall tour price and meals may also be provided. This allows seniors to relax in comfort without having to worry about costs associated with lodging or eating out. Additionally, many national park tours offer added add-on packages that include access to special exhibitions or activities at certain parks like Glacier National Park .

Interpretation guided by knowledgeable guides provide additional insight into each location visited on the tour and they often share fascinating stories that help guests better appreciate these unique destinations. National park tours can vary greatly in length; some are only a few days long while others may last up to two weeks or more. No matter what kind of tour is chosen, seniors can rest assured knowing they will get an experience full of natural beauty during their national park exploration!

Historical Tours

Historical tours offer a great way for seniors to explore and take in the sights of local, national, and international attractions. Historic bus tours allow passengers to get a good overview of the area with detailed insight into historical sites. The tour often includes interesting facts and stories of people, events, and locations that shaped the landscape and culture of the region.

Depending on the type of tour you choose, you might be able to visit ancient ruins or palaces, museums, battlefields or visit important cultural landmarks.

Most historical tours focus on either urban areas like cities or natural landscapes like parks or forests . While some tours may have a specific theme – such as food or architecture – others offer general sightseeing that explores urban art and architecture as well as local customs, culture and social life.

Before setting off on your bus tour adventure make sure that you’ve done your research – ask friends for recommendations or check out online reviews so that you can find one that fits your interests!

Wine Country Tours

Wine country tours provide an opportunity for seniors to explore some of the world’s best vineyards and wine-producing regions. With an experienced tour guide, seniors can learn about the history, traditions, and culture of wine-making in renowned wine growing regions including Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, Mendocino County, Santa Barbara County and more.

These tours usually include visits to several wineries where guests will be provided with knowledgeable explanations of the different processes used to make quality wines. Depending on the tour you choose, you may also have a chance to sample wines from local or regional producers . Wine tasting experiences with professional guides who can teach proper tasting techniques are an ideal way for seniors to savor the unique flavors of these regionally crafted selections.

Many winery tours also pair attendees with culinary experts for unique meals that offer insight into regional menus and pairings. Expert advice on pairing cheeses and other accompaniments is a great way for seniors to gain knowledge about food/wine combinations that enhance their dining experience.

In addition to exclusive experiences with industry insiders, services like luxury transportation from pick-up points across the state are often included in tour packages designed specifically for seniors who love the finer things in life such as:

Popular destinations include secluded islands, mountain ranges and cityscapes stretching across many miles of coastline might include historic sites such as lighthouses or old port towns . How to Choose the Right Tour

When planning a bus tour for seniors, it’s important to consider all the factors before making a choice. The ideal bus tour for seniors should be both comfortable and entertaining, and should also have plenty of activities to keep your group engaged. When selecting a tour, you should also take into account the budget, the destinations offered, and the safety of your group .

Let’s take a look at how to choose the right tour for your seniors :

Consider the Length of the Tour

For seniors looking to explore a new place on a bus tour, consider the length of the tour . A long bus tour may have many highlights and attractions in one place, but if the duration of the tour is too long, it can be draining and exhausting for seniors. At the same time, shorter tours may not offer enough opportunities for exploration. It’s important to find a balance between duration and attractions to make your dream vacation happen!

When choosing a bus tour for seniors, also take into consideration other factors that can make or break your vacation experience. Ask questions such as:

  • What is the size of the vehicle?
  • Are there any restroom stops at regular intervals?
  • Will there be any extra activities offered while on board?
  • How close are we to our destination when we disembark?
  • Are there ample rest stops along the way or when our destination is reached?

Answering these questions will help you choose a well-suited tour package tailored specifically to meet your needs.

Consider the Price

The cost of the tour is a major factor to consider when selecting the right bus tour for seniors. While most tours provide exceptional value for the money, some tours may be more affordable than others. Carefully review all included features so that you can make an informed decision about cost. Consider things like food, lodging and accessibility when determining what type of tour best fits within your budget. Additionally, ask if any discounts or senior citizen rates are available prior to making your purchase.

In this way, you’ll be able to identify which tours are best suited to fit within your financial means while still providing you with enjoyable experiences and memories.

Consider the Tour Itinerary

When choosing the right tour for seniors, one of the main considerations is the tour itinerary. It is important to take into account how long the tour will last, what type of transportation will be used and whether any transportation changes need to be made during the course of it. In addition to these factors, it is also important to know what kind of sightseeing locations are included in the tour . It should be noted that some tours may include overnight stays at certain hotels or stops at local attractions, providing an added bonus to those taking part. Depending on overall budget for such trips, seniors should consider whether they’d like short day trips or extended itineraries that explore several cities and states in depth.

Additionally, when researching various tours companies, seniors should keep an eye out for any activities associated with the tour . These can range from visits to historic sites or local gardens to special dining experiences, or simply having a knowledgeable guide onboard in order to gain more insights about a destination’s history and culture. Knowing these details helps provide extra assurance that seniors are engaging with experiences that suit their interests and have been tailored specifically for them.

Consider the Amenities

When selecting a bus tour for seniors, one of the most important considerations is what amenities the bus tour offers. It is important that the bus tour you choose has comfortable accommodations, entertaining activities and lasting memories .

Many well-known senior bus tours include entertainment on board, interactive sessions with knowledgeable people like historians and naturalists and many exciting sightseeing opportunities.

When selecting a senior bus tour, it is important to consider:

  • What type of destinations you want to visit
  • How long you would like your trip to last

Some senior tours offer packages tailored for seniors’ interests. They may include visiting many historical landmarks or attending workshops related to specific topics such as history or photography. There are also many themed tours available such as winery or brewery tours, scenic drives and beach vacations .

In addition to the main attractions of a bus tour, seniors need to make sure that other amenities are available which will help them fully enjoy their trip. A reliable tourist guide should be included in the package that can answer all questions about stops along the way as well as provide information on local attractions, dining and shopping options in each location visited. Seniors should also consider transportation options beyond what might be included on their tour by researching accessible public transit in destination cities before they depart so they can explore further if they choose.

The best senior bus tours make sure that travelers have access to comfortable restrooms breaks as well as food stops throughout the journey. Lastly, finding out about any special discounts available through travel associations or companies can save money in an already budget-friendly vacation option without sacrificing safety or comfort standards for seniors traveling together.

When choosing the best bus tour for seniors, it’s important to consider not just the cost of the tour , but also how well the tour fits each person’s needs. Different companies offer different types of tours for seniors, and some may be better suited for one person than another. For elderly people who cannot walk long distances or don’t like to drive themselves around in their own car, a bus tour is an ideal way to travel in an organized and safe manner with an experienced guide.

Many senior travel companies also understand the specific needs of their customers, such as providing assistance with special dietary requirements and assistance with mobility issues . Bus tours provide a safe and secure environment that can ease any worries about missing out on attractions or getting lost due to inexperience exploration.

When selecting a bus tour for seniors is it important to ask questions about accommodations, accessibility considerations and possible discounts related to membership within organizations such as AARP . Finally, while price should never be the only factor when making your decision, if you do your research ahead of time you can find great deals on senior friendly bus tours!

  • Glacier National Park Bus Tours – You can enjoy guided bus tours through Glacier National Park in Montana, known for its glaciers, lakes, and rugged mountain scenery.

When searching for National Park bus tours for seniors, it’s essential to consider the tour itinerary, duration, included activities, accommodations, and the level of physical activity involved. Always check with the tour operator about their specific offerings and accommodations for senior travelers.

How to Choose a National Park Bus Tour

By following these guidelines, you can confidently choose a National Park bus tour that matches your interests, aligns with your needs, and promises an unforgettable journey through the breathtaking beauty of America’s national parks.

Consider Your Physical Abilities

Before you dive into the tour options, take a moment to assess your physical abilities and limitations. Some tours involve easy walks and minimal physical activity, while others may require more strenuous hikes and outdoor pursuits. Choose a tour that matches your fitness level, ensuring you can fully enjoy the experience without feeling overwhelmed.

Duration and Itinerary

Determine the length of time you wish to spend on the tour. Review the itinerary carefully to ensure it includes visits to the specific attractions that pique your interest. Look for a well-balanced itinerary that covers both iconic landmarks and off-the-beaten-path treasures.

Group Size and Pace

Consider the size of the tour group. Smaller groups often offer a more intimate experience and allow for personalized attention from guides. Also, assess the pace of the tour. If you prefer a leisurely exploration with plenty of time to soak in the scenery, a slower-paced tour might be the right fit.

Inquire about the amenities on the bus, such as restrooms and accessibility features.

The Expertise of Tour Guides

The knowledge and expertise of the tour guides can significantly impact your experience. Look for tours led by certified or experienced guides who are well-versed in the history, geology, and ecology of the national parks. Their insights and storytelling can enrich your journey.

Reviews and Recommendations

Do your research! Read reviews from fellow seniors who have previously taken the tours you’re considering. Their firsthand experiences can provide valuable insights and help you make an informed decision.

Flexibility and Accessibility

Check if the tour operator can accommodate any special dietary needs, mobility requirements, or medical considerations you may have. A tour that prioritizes accessibility ensures everyone can enjoy the adventure.

New York City, Niagara Falls & Washington DC with Extended Stay in New York City Tour

New York City, Niagara Falls & Washington DC with Extended Stay in New York City

What people love about east coast usa tours for seniors.

A hectic and fast paced trip, starting with early mornings. Loved Niagara Falls and being able to go to the Canadian side for one night (remember to apply for a Canadian Esta and bring your passport). Pennsylvania and Amish country side was a treat. Wish we had more time there. Love hearing about American history. Then Washington DC- amazing city. We disembarked after touring DC monuments and aeronautical museum and spent two more days in DC. Wharf, eateries, sights and monuments within reach.
I was hoping we'd stop more so that I could take more pictures of foliage but overall I enjoyed all that we did. Brigette is a great person, with a fantastic personality.
I was on a fall foliage tour with Globus. The guide was great, the itinerary was also very nice and I enjoyed it very much. I was however disappointed that despite Globus claiming on their website that they have "small group" tours that average 24 people there were 42 on our tour. I guess I should look for advertisement of the total group size instead of thinking that an "average" of 24 would be closer to 24 than to 42! Proof of vaccination was required, which was necessary for me to sign up in the first place but I truly felt deceived that my "small group" was almost double the average.

STRESS-FREE TRAVEL: 15 Best Group Travel Companies for Guided Tours in 2024

1. Trafalgar Tours

An older couple take a break from hiking to enjoy coffee on a Utah outlook overlooking a canyon. They are sitting on camp stools close to the edge. They are both holding coffee mugs and she is smiling at the camera.

One of the oldest and most respected names in group travel, Trafalgar Tours has logged more than 75 years in the travel business and offers a wide variety of destinations and travel styles: guided tours, river cruising, next-gen and family tours , luxury and customized private tours, and safari and adventure travel.

Trafalgar’s “Be My Guest” experiences allow you to visit and dine with local families in homes, farms, and restaurants. “Mini-stays” of three to five days appeal to the busy traveler or to those who want an “add-on” to a longer tour or stay. “At Leisure” trips have a relaxed pace, longer stays at each accommodation, and later starts in the mornings.

FAR AND WIDE: 10 Best Trafalgar Tours to Take in 2024

Because Trafalgar’s customer base is international, tour participants are likely to be English-speaking citizens of a variety of countries—a plus for North Americans who would enjoy traveling with people from all over the globe. A travel director accompanies each tour group and coordinates with local tour guides at each destination. Many of the travel directors have five years’ experience or more.

Trafalgar has a “Very Important Traveler” program that offers 5% savings on selected trips. For solo travelers, the cost of a single supplement depends on the trip. Optional experiences on each tour cost extra but also offer the flexibility to create your own custom tour: You may opt out of the activity and choose to do something else—or just relax.

THE SCOOP: What to Know About Trafalgar Tours Before You Book

Trafalgar is the anchor brand of The Travel Corporation (TTC), which comprises 42 travel brands, including tour operations that specialize in different destinations, age groups, price range, and travel styles. For example, the CostSaver brand is very inexpensive, while  Insight Vacations  is a premium tour company, and  Luxury Gold  is TTC’s high-end tour company.

2. Tauck Tours

Tauck Tours, a popular tour company for seniors, private, after-hours visit inside the Sistine Chape

Tauck Tours offers deluxe and highly inclusive tours to more than 100 destinations on all seven continents. With nearly 100 years in the tour business, Tauck prides itself on quality and on the experience of its Tour Directors, who come from 40 countries and average 10 years of experience. The hotels it selects are always excellent and well-located.

Tauck aims to appeal to people of all ages by offering land journeys, European river cruises, small ship ocean cruises, and multi-generational “Tauck Bridges” family travel. Each tour has ratings for activity level and pace (rated one through four), but, like many tour companies, Tauck warns that travelers with mobility issues must bring their own assistance.

ACTIVE TRAVEL:   5 Best Senior Adventures for Travelers Age 50+

Seniors who prefer to have the majority of their experience planned for them will appreciate the full itineraries and the many included meals in fine hotels and restaurants. With individual excursions included rather than optional, Tauck travelers are encouraged to try experiences (e.g., a raft trip or a helicopter ride) they might not otherwise have considered.

Tauck promises to “manage the unexpected—big and small,” with its Global Response Team, a comprehensive support system that takes care of all details, including such exigencies as accidents and quarantines.  The company has a frequent traveler savings program and offers some savings for solo travelers on selected journeys.

Quick Facts about Senior Travel Tours with Tauck Tours

3. Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT)

view of fishing village on an Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) tour

Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT), part of the Grand Circle Corporation since 1978, focuses on active travelers over 50 who are looking for hands-on experiences in destinations around the world. The seniors-only company prides itself in taking travelers off the beaten track with immersive “Day in the Life” experiences such as shopping at local markets, visiting children at school, and taking part in home-hosted meals. OAT opts for accommodations that offer authentic local experiences—think smaller family-run hotels, paradores , and hotels close to city centers.

Both land and small-ship tours for seniors are available. Most trips last two weeks or more, with optional pre- and post-trip extensions, appealing to retirees and working people who have saved vacation time as well as travel funds. The physical requirements of each tour are described in detail, with an activity level rating system of one (easy) to five (strenuous). Each itinerary outlines the included meals and local tours; optional tours require an additional fee, but the itineraries also recommend many free or inexpensive options for your free time.

BRING THE GRANDCHILDREN:   8 Grandparent-Grandkid Vacations for Active Seniors

OAT has made itself a leader in solo travel: More than a quarter of its senior citizen clients are solo travelers, and of those, 85% are women. Roughly 92% of its single spaces are free of any singles surcharge, others are heavily discounted, and the company also offers a roommate matching program. In 2019, OAT began offering some women-only departures.

While not a cut-rate tour company, OAT works hard to provide senior tours at low per diems—giving you more for your travel dollar. The Travel Channel recognized it as a top provider for budget-conscious travelers, and the Grand Circle Foundation received a Global Vision award for leadership in tourism and philanthropy.

Quick Facts about Over-50 Tours with Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT)

  • Average group size: Small-group land tours have no more than 16 travelers; small-ship adventures have no more than 25 participants.
  • Price range: Moderate.
  • What’s included: All accommodations (comfortable hotels), most meals, daily cultural activities, some tips, and airport transfers.
  • What’s not included: Some optional tours, meals, and tips.
  • Primary audience: “Curious lifelong learners” age 50+.
  • Destinations: 76 countries on six continents; no tours in North America
  • How to book: Directly through OAT

4. Road Scholar

senior bus tours

Road Scholar is a senior travel tour company that emphasizes lifelong learning and educational travel for older travelers. Founded in 1975 as the nonprofit Elderhostel, the organization changed its name in 2010 and now provides study tours throughout the U.S., Canada, and in more than 100 other countries. All of its senior-focused tours include guidance and lectures by Road Scholar faculty who are experts on topics relevant to the destination. Lodgings are always comfortable and “sometimes even iconic.”

Road Scholar programs include theme-based travel (such as arts, philosophy and religion, and nature studies), outdoor adventures, service learning trips, adventures afloat, intergenerational tours, and independent city discoveries. The “Choose Your Pace” feature allows you to choose among multiple options of tour length, challenge, and pace. Extended-stay programs range from eight days in Florence to 45 days in southern Spain.

TRIPS OF A LIFETIME:   12 Best Amtrak Vacations and Scenic Train Rides in North America

Activity levels for tours range from “easy-going” to “outdoor: challenging,” with the physical demands of each tour described in its itinerary. An “easy” tour might cover a week of Chautauqua lectures in New York, while a “challenging” tour might include hiking and kayaking in Alaska.

Nearly 25% of Road Scholars are traveling solo; the senior tour company offers some discounts on single rooms, provides supportive advice to women traveling solo, and emphasizes “learning in the company of a small group of individual friends, rather than traveling with a collection of couples.”  Road Scholar travelers tend to be curious and open to new ideas and cultures. The travel company recently added a virtual Adventures Online series of in-depth lectures for those who wish to supplement an in-person journey or simply learn from home.

Quick Facts about Senior Travel Tours with Road Scholar

  • Average group size: 13 to 24 people on “small group” tours; 12 or fewer on “micro group” tours; other group sizes vary by tour type and destination.
  • Price range: Moderate to expensive, but with lots of included perks that other tour companies charge extra for.
  • What’s included: All accommodations, most meals, tips, excursions, expert lectures (in addition to your tour director), and airport transfers if you book flights through Road Scholar.
  • What’s not included: Porterage and airport transfers if you arrange your own flights.
  • Primary audience: Lifelong learners over the age of 50.
  • Destinations: Road Scholar’s senior tours cover all 50 U.S. states as well as 100 countries on all continents; the emphasis is on North America.
  • How to Book: Directly through Road Scholar ; via Travelstride , a tour specialist OTA that offers more than 1,500 Road Scholar trips; or through a travel agent such as AAA .

5. Smithsonian Journeys

Matsue Castle in Japan with tree leaves framing the picture, as seen on a Smithsonian Journeys tour

Like Road Scholar, Smithsonian Journeys is a group travel company for seniors that focuses on educational travel. It offers specialized land journeys, active outdoor journeys, small ship cruises, and cultural stays. At least one expert accompanies each tour or stay, providing lectures and local tours appropriate to the destination. Tours include culturally immersive experiences like visits to homes, meals with locals, and demonstrations of local crafts and cuisines. High-quality accommodations are included in the price and reflect the character of the local culture.

ADVENTURES FOR WOMEN: 9 Travel Companies That Specialize in Women’s-Only Tours

Smithsonian also provides special interest tours for older travelers, including study at Oxford, cave art exploration, and observation of the total solar eclipse in 2024. Its Cultural Stays allow travelers to “unpack once” and spend from one to three weeks exploring and learning in and around a single destination.

A branch of the 175-year-old Smithsonian Institution, Smithsonian Journeys has operated tours for more than 50 years. Its wide range of travel options appeals to many age groups, but the average age of travelers with this company is 55+. (The typical age range on active tours is 45 to 70; on special interest tours, it’s 55 to 80.) Smithsonian’s five activity level ratings are somewhat more demanding than Road Scholar’s, ranging from “Easy” (easy walking and shorter travel days) to “Challenging” (e.g., climbing Kilimanjaro).

Quick Facts about Senior Tours with Smithsonian Journeys

  • Average group size: 12 to 24 people for most land journeys; cruises from 36 people (river boat) to 264 (small ship cruise).
  • Price range: Moderate to expensive, but with lots of included perks.
  • What’s included: Excellent accommodations, most meals, most tips, excursions, experts and lectures, and airport transfers. Some itineraries also offer airfare-inclusive pricing
  • What’s not included: Some meals and some tips.
  • Primary audience: Travelers 45 to 80 years old who want to better understand the world.
  • Destinations: 130 itineraries on seven continents (with an emphasis on Europe).
  • How to Book: Directly through Smithsonian Journeys or through a travel agent such as AAA .

swimmers in spa pool in Budapest on a Globus tour in Europe

Established more than 90 years ago, Globus heads a family of travel brands that also includes Avalon Waterways (river tours) and Cosmos (budget tours). The company offers travel styles for a variety of fitness levels and interests, with an emphasis on freedom and flexibility that works especially well for seniors. It ranks among the best escorted tour companies for the 55+ age group because it recognizes that the one-size-fits-all mentality does not work for everyone, especially older travelers.

FOODIE VACATIONS:   9 Best Companies for Culinary Tours

Free time on every tour allows for “adventure a la carte.” A wide array of optional excursions and activities is offered on each itinerary: some are extra-cost activities provided by the company, while others are simply helpful suggestions for independent exploration. Globus provides tour directors and local guides from the region for every tour, as well as “skip the lines” access to sites, centrally located first-class hotels, opportunities to meet local families, and some “experiential dining” meals.

Globus tours come in many different formats. Globus Undiscovered tours take you off the beaten path where there are fewer crowds; this option is attractive to seasoned travelers who have already seen famous sights like the Tower of Pisa and the Mona Lisa. Escapes by Globus offers up to a 40% discount on tours taken between November and March. Choice Touring and Independence by Globus provide itineraries that allow you to choose excursions and have more “I-time” while the company provides lodging and the help of a tour director.

Quick Facts about Guided Tours for Older Travelers with Globus

  • Average group size: 24 people (small-group discovery) to 36 people (average size of a coach tour).
  • Price range: Inexpensive, but optional excursions cost extra.
  • What’s included: All accommodations, some meals, airport transfers on published tour departure and return dates, and admission to sites included in tour.
  • What’s not included: Optional experiences (may be $50 to $100 each), tips, and some meals.
  • Primary audience: Adults who want a wide variety of travel options.
  • Destinations: More than 50 countries on six continents.
  • How to Book: Directly through Globus ; via Travelstride , Tourhub , or TourRadar , all which are tour specialist OTAs; or through a travel agent such as AAA .

7. Intrepid Travel

two people kayaking with icebergs in the background on an Intrepid tour

Founded in 1988 in Australia and now employee-owned, Intrepid Travel offers 1,100 escorted tours worldwide, with an average of 10 travelers per tour. The company focuses on small group active trips off the beaten track. Its tours often use public transportation and stay at locally owned accommodations.

Intrepid has an age-inclusive philosophy (“18 to 70”) and aims to provide tours for all interests and comfort levels. Tour styles include “ Basix ” for the budget travel crowd and “ Comfort ,” which tends to attract older travelers. The travel tour company also offers retreats and tours for women, solo travelers, and the 18-29 age group. Note that while Intrepid tours are active, its tours are “not a constant endurance test.” A general level of health and fitness is adequate for its trips.

HIT THE TRAILS: 9 Best Tour Companies for Walking, Trekking, and Hiking Tours

Examples of Intrepid tours include a winter journey to Iceland to view the Aurora Borealis, a hiking-cycling trip in Sri Lanka, snorkeling in Bali, kayaking in Alaska, and enjoying the Naadam Festival in Mongolia or Day of the Dead in Mexico. A “Comfort” trip to Jordan might include some moderate hiking to sites, floating in the Dead Sea, a stay in a desert camp, and snorkeling in the Red Sea. Intrepid also offers small ship adventure cruising to such places as the Galapagos Island, the Greek and Turkish Islands, Antarctica, and French Polynesia.

Intrepid conducts safety assessments of all included and optional activities; experienced local leaders provide instruction and advice to travelers who are new to an activity or area. It also has an excellent record of corporate responsibility. Intrepid focuses on sustainable travel and has been carbon neutral since 2010.

Quick Facts about Guided Tours with Intrepid Travel

  • Average group size: 10 people.
  • Price range: Moderately inexpensive but extra cost for premium upgrades.
  • What’s included: On general tours, you get accommodations, breakfasts, and local experiences. On premium tours, you can expect additions like breakfast and some other meals, tips, and airport and luggage transfer.
  • What’s not included: See above.
  • Primary audience: Active adult travelers of all ages.
  • Destinations: More than 100 countries on seven continents, including polar regions and more South Pacific destinations than most other senior tour companies.
  • How to Book: Directly through Intrepid ; via Travelstride , Tourhub , or TourRadar all which are tour specialist OTAs (online travel agents) that offer hundreds of Intrepid trips; or through a travel agent such as AAA .

8. Viking River Cruises

People dining onboard a Viking River Cruise ship with beautiful water and forest in the background

Viking River Cruises specializes in European river touring, but it also offers small ship ocean cruises and expedition voyages. The company is more than 25 years old and is among the most awarded river cruise lines worldwide. Viking owns and operates its own ships; it also owns some dock locations.

SINGLE TRAVEL: 10 Best Tour Companies for Solo Travelers

Viking does not try to be all things to all people. There are no casinos on its river boats, for example, nor are children under 18 allowed. Viking also has a “no nickel and diming and no umbrella drinks” policy. However, you can expect outside rooms, onboard enrichment lectures, destination performances, onshore excursions in every port, introductions to local life and people, and an experienced staff. (In fact, 90% of the company’s river cruise staff returns each year.) Optional pre- and post-tour land extensions are offered.

With a philosophy that travel “should be a doorway to cultural insight and personal enrichment,” Viking could be regarded as a waterborne version of Road Scholar or Smithsonian Journeys. The company owns a learning channel (Viking TV) and provides recommended readings and other materials before you depart.

Quick Facts about Cruises for Seniors with Viking

  • Passenger limit on river boats: 190 people  (up to 930 on ocean ships)
  • Price range: Moderately expensive but inclusive.
  • What’s included: Onboard accommodations, meals, shore excursions, entertainment, tips; and transfers with air purchase through Viking. Some tours also include free international airfare.

More Senior Travel Tour Company Options for Older Travelers

If you can’t see yourself in any of the senior tour styles I’ve mentioned above—or maybe you just want even more options—I have a few more recommendations.

1) Those who loved travel experiences in their student days and prefer an inexpensive tour may want to look at EF Go Ahead Tours .

2) Those who are physically fit and want active travel like cycling tours and walking tours with a mixed age group have many good options, including Backroads and Country Walkers , which can be a good fit for senior cycling and walking enthusiasts.

College graduates should check to see if their alumni association sponsors any tours: AHI , Odysseys Unlimited , and other companies work with these associations to provide excellent tours at good prices.

Finally, seniors planning a multigenerational family vacation or skip-gen trip with the grandkids should consider a company like Adventures by Disney , which is a hit with all ages.

Demi Moore on Full Frontal Nudity With Margaret Qualley in ‘The Substance’: ‘A Very Vulnerable Experience’ but I Had a ‘Great Partner Who I Felt Very Safe With’

CANNES, FRANCE - MAY 19: Demi Moore and her dog Pilaf attend a photocall at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival at the Carlton Cannes Hotel on May 19, 2024 in Cannes, France. (Photo by Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images)

Demi Moore ‘s new film, the feminist body horror “ The Substance ,” sees her bare it all, with several scenes featuring full nudity. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference for the film on Monday, the 61-year-old actor discussed the “vulnerable experience.”

“Going into it, it was really spelled out — the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story,” Moore said. “And it was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish.”

Summer movie meltdown math: years of box office data reveal discouraging trends, nbc mockumentary 'st. denis medical' gets season 1 extended to 18 episodes, popular on variety.

“I had someone who was a great partner who I felt very safe with. We obviously were quite close  — naked — and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were,” she said. “But ultimately. it’s just about really directing your communication and mutual trust.”

As the film progresses, Moore becomes horribly disfigured thanks to the abuse her other half Qualley is inflicting on her. By the film’s last act, she quite resembles Anjelica Huston from the 1990 film “The Witches,” after she transforms into a humpback abomination.

Dennis Quaid also stars in the film as an “asshole,” as he described his character during the presser. The late Ray Liotta was meant to have the role before his passing in May 2022, and Quaid dedicated his performance to him.

“In my heart, I dedicated this role to Ray Liotta, who was set to play it,” Quaid said. “It was this week, two years ago that he passed, so I’d like to remember him. He was such an incredible actor.”

Cannes went wild for “The Substance” at its premiere on Sunday night, giving the film an 11-minute standing ovation , the longest of the fest so far.

In an interview with Variety , the French director discussed the film’s feminist themes, saying that body horror is “the perfect vehicle to express the violence all these women’s issues are about.”

With an undercurrent of #MeToo at this year’s festival as the movement grows in France, Fargeat hopes the film will shine even more light on the issue. “It’s a little stone in the huge wall we still have to build regarding this issue, and to be honest, I hope my film will also be one of the stones of that wall. That’s really what I intended to do with it.”

Election latest: PM should show 'leadership' and suspend betting suspects; Sunak and Starmer 'to dine together'

Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer are both set to attend a banquet as part of a state visit by the emperor of Japan. Meanwhile, Ruth Davidson has called for the prime minister to ignore the Gambling Commission and suspend the alleged betters in his party.

Illegal migration minister Michael Tomlinson is asked about his brief - and whether he should be trusted to do the job when small boat crossings have hit record numbers on his watch.

Mr Tomlinson says there is evidence the Rwanda scheme is working as a deterrent - but caveats this seconds later by saying the "full effect of the deterrent" will not kick in until planes take off.

The scheme was first announced in April 2022 and no planes have departed.

On small boats, Mr Tomlinson says that illegal migration is down a third "year on year".

This is correct when comparing 2023 to 2022.

However, the number of people who have crossed the Channel this year is currently tracking above the levels seen in 2022.

A record number of people - close to 13,000 - crossed the Channel in the first six months of this year.

This is higher than the same point in both 2023 and 2022.

Illegal migration minister Michael Tomlinson is speaking to Sky News on behalf of the government this morning.

He first off is asked about the extradition of Julian Assange - but says it is breaking news, and he wants to wait for the "full facts" before he responds.

Sky presenter Matt Barbet asks the minister if he feels "the same about the gambling scandal as well that's engulfing the Conservatives right now".

The presenter adds: "Are you going to tell me that we have to wait for the full facts and the Gambling Commission's investigations?"

Mr Tomlinson says - channelling his "inner lawyer" - that it is "certainly the right thing to do" to wait for the watchdog to finish its probe.

Matt asks why it is the right thing to do when some involved have conceded they placed a bet.

"So why not be suspended?" he asks - saying that it is normal to suspend someone during an investigation.

Mr Tomlinson says there is a "process" - and the Gambling Commission is independent.

He adds that there is an internal party process in motion as well - and it is important it happens "swiftly" - and anyone found to have broken the rules or laws will be dealt with "severely".

But he does not explain why the prime minister cannot take the initiative and suspend the people under investigation.

Reducing knife crime will be a "moral mission" for Labour if it wins the general election on 4 July, Sir Keir Starmer will say on Tuesday.

The party leader will outline his plan to halve knife crime over the next 10 years, including creating a new cross-government "coalition" to work on solutions - including families of victims and survivors of knife crime, along with tech companies and relevant organisations.

Sir Keir will also promise to chair an annual knife crime summit to "track progress" on the target, and appeal to all parties to work together on the issue.

"Knife crime is an issue above and beyond party politics," he will say. "For the parents grieving sons and daughters who never came home, action to end this scourge cannot wait.

"Far too often we hear the same stories from grieving families who have been subject to these brutal murders carried out by children.

"It is our duty as political leaders of all stripes to work together to end knife crime and keep our young people safe."

Figures from Labour showed knife-related offences had risen by 81% since 2015 across England and Wales.

The party's pledges for after the election include increasing the penalties for carrying a knife - including custody in the most serious cases, as well as extending the list of banned knives.

It's hard for politicians to cut through. It's even harder when you are leading the fourth largest party in parliament with only 11 MPs.

How do you insert yourself into a conversation that's happening largely between the Conservatives and Labour, with a sprinkling of Reform's Nigel Farage in the mix?

Well, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has done it two ways.

The first through endless silly stunts - be it repeatedly falling off a paddleboard on Lake Windermere or riding a giant waterslide in his swimming trunks in Somerset.

But the second, and far more profound, way to reach voters has been to open up about his own childhood, caring for his dying mother, and now, as a father himself, raising a disabled son.

The decision to make a highly personal election broadcast, which showed Sir Ed at home with his 16-year old son John, as well as footage of him at his childhood home in Nottingham talking about his mother dying of breast cancer when he was 15, has, in part, been to highlight the world of carers.

But it has also been to try to show a side of this political leader the electorate don't know.

Since the short film was released three weeks weeks ago, it has been viewed over 6.4 million times on the leader's X feed. That is what you call cut through.

The latest episode of the Electoral Dysfunction podcast is out, with Sky political editor Beth Rigby chatting to former Scottish Conservative leader Baroness Ruth Davidson, and ex-Labour adviser Baroness Ayesha Hazarika.

At one point, the discussion turns to the Conservative betting scandal.

A number of Conservative candidates and officials are being investigated over whether they bet on the timing of the election before Rishi Sunak announced it - but they have not been suspended from the party.

The Tories say they cannot take further public action due to the Gambling Commission's investigation.

But Lady Davidson says Mr Sunak should ignore the watchdog.

She said: "The Gambling Commission are very, very clear about what you're not allowed to say when somebody's being investigated by the Gambling Commission.

"But I'm sorry, you're the prime minister of a G7 nation in the middle of an election campaign when you're fighting for your life... If the Gambling Commission want to shout at you for suspending somebody and saying that, just do it.

"That's what leadership is."

She added that she thought "nothing was going to be worse than leaving D-Day early" - but the betting allegations are "reinforcing already bad opinions".

Today's campaigning will have a unique dynamic to it due to the state visit from the Japanese emperor and empress.

While the monarch is not expected to visit Downing Street or give a speech in parliament due to the election, he will be heading to a state banquet this evening at Buckingham Palace.

Both Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer are expected to be in attendance at the dinner - an evening slightly differed to the two televised events it is nestled between.

Coming up this morning on Sky News:

  • Illegal migration minister and Conservative candidate Michael Tomlinson at 7.15am ;
  • Labour shadow minister and candidate Nick Thomas-Symonds at 8.15am.

We'll be back from 6am with all the latest from the election campaign.

We're in the last few days of the race for Number 10 - and parties from across the House of Commons are accelerating their efforts.

Its 10pm - here's your late night general election bulletin.

We're into the last full week of the election campaign, with just 10 days left until polling day - and things are heating up.

Here's a run down of everything you may have missed:

  • Rishi Sunak  today said he is not being investigated by the Gambling Commission over the betting scandal;
  • He confirmed the Conservative Party is carrying out its own investigation - and will pass its findings on to the Gambling Commission ;
  • The prime minister later took part in an election Q&A with The Sun, in which he insisted he only took the top job "as the result of a mistake" made by Liz Truss ;
  • He also failed to confirm whether he called a summer election to avoid potential legal trouble over Rwanda flights taking off in July;
  • Meanwhile, economists have lambasted a "conspiracy of silence" from the main parties over their tax and spending plans - read more below:
  • Over to Labour, which has offered to meet Harry Potter author JK Rowling to provide her with "assurances" over the protection of women-only spaces;
  • Sir Keir Starmer also took part in the election Q&A, and he admitted that he "understands" why people are confused by his shift in stance on Jeremy Corbyn;
  • And Lord Richard Dannatt, the former head of the army, has said Nigel Farage is "not worth listening to about anything" - particularly relating to the war in Ukraine;
  • The Reform leader said last week the West had contributed to the invasion of Ukraine;
  • He has launched a blistering attack aimed at his one-time ally Boris Johnson - highlighting a front page showing Mr Johnson holding a similar stance on Russia back in 2016.

A flurry of general elections since 2015 has brought an unprecedented churn in our parliamentary representatives.

This year, two in five MPs aren't seeking re-election and the picture for the Conservatives is record-breakingly grim.

An unparalleled total of 23% of Conservative MPs are calling it a day in 2024, more than the previous high of 22% of Tories who quit in 1997, another year of boundary changes.

In contrast, only 15% of Labour MPs are resigning.

There are many reasons MPs quit: from retirement, family commitments and health concerns to career change, abolished constituencies, and the prospect of defeat.

But their decision to depart can reveal much about life in Westminster and have a significant impact on parliament's mix of experience, demographics, and the direction of political parties.

Dr Sofia Collignon, associate professor in Comparative Politics, analyses the churn in our representatives here:
