Detail Itinerary

Chepang Hill Siraichuli Trek  is a part of national development effort to empower, rural communities and women through the promotion of Eco - tourism, initiated by the Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Program. The Chepang Hill Siraichuli Trek offers a glimpse into a primal culture with unique accommodations. This new trail has been explored to improve the socio- economic standing of local communities while conserving the environment and avoiding common pitfalls of Tourism expansion. The Trek Chepang Hill Siraichuli is to emphasis on use of local porters, home stays, minimal environmental impact/ resource consumption and integration with the indigenous inhabitants. This unspoiled area offers a clear view of what life in Nepal’s hills was like before the waves of modernization.  The people we will meet there living in both nomadic roots and basic system of agriculture. Chepang Hill Siraichuli Trek is therefore ideal for tourists who want to experience the beautiful and natural landscape of the Mahabharat Range combined with glimpses into a fascinating and well – preserved, indigenous culture. The Chepang Hill Siraichuli Trek is located in the Mahabharat Range of Central Nepal. It is positioned to the north of Chitwan National Park and linked via the Barabdabhar Corridor Forest. There is blending of broad leafed deciduous forest, chir- pine and the rhododendron on the way which burst into flower in the early spring. The highest point of the Chepang Hill Siraichuli trek is Siraichuli Hill (1,945m). It is cooler than Kathmandu and the Chitwan lowlands. This area is the home for 238 species of birds. The Chepang is an ethnic group of Nepal, residing the upper Mahabharat Range filled a nomadic lifestyle. Living off the rich forests of the region as hunters and gatherers, their lives were inextricably intertwined with the local environment.  The Chepangs practice a mixture of Hinduism and Animism; speak their own dialect along with Nepali in many cases. Each Chepang settlement has a holy ground, often a cave or group of stones, where prayers and sacrifices are offered to the gods. Although by some standards the Chepang people might be considered undeveloped, their strong heritage and close relationship with the land characterize this ethnic group as unique and culturally rich. We find other ethnic groups like Magars, Gurungs, Giri-Puris, Brahmins, Chhetris and Newars too in this area and  visitors will find more exposure to different varieties on foods , drinks customs and lifestyles. There are two main entrances to the Chepang Hill Siraichuli Trek: Hugdi and Shaktikhor . Hugdi is located between Mugling and Krishna Bhir on the Mugling - Narayanghat Highway. Visitors can reach this northern entrance point by bus or by 1-2 day rafting trip down the Trisuli River. The other access point from the south is Shaktikhor. This entrance is located within 2 hours of Sauraha and offers a larger variety of short and long trips for visitors. Shaktikhor is the gateway to the Mahabharat Range from the sub- tropical Chitwan valley of inner Terai.

1) What physical fitness do I need to book this trip?

Every trekking in the Himalayas of Nepal requires the certain level of physical and mental fitness. So, we advise you to be in good physical shape and able to feel comfortable while hiking up and down 7 to 12 miles per day on a trail carrying a day pack of about 10 pounds. Three things could make you confident enough for any trek you would like to do: aerobic, strength and mental.

Aerobic conditioning is important primarily because you will be trekking in thinner air, up to 40% less than at sea level. With good aerobic conditioning, you will be able to better metabolize whatever oxygen is available to you. You should plan on doing at least one hour of aerobic 3 /4 times per week for 1 month or more before your arrival in Nepal. Walking, jogging, cycling, hiking on valley floor to ridge line ascents with day back are some of the excellent forms of exercise, so long as you are strengthening leg muscles and building stamina. Speed is not the essence; stamina, confidence and continuity are. Do as much uphill as possible. If you live in flat area, go to the stadium and use the steps with your pack.

You are advised to use Guide so that you could feel safer in the unknown area because the guide can tell you the possible danger as they have guided in this region since long. Nest advantage to be with Guide is you get more knowledge about local culture and you could have easy access to interact with the local people. In 2014, the Nepal Government clearly has stated that the trekkers should have a guide but still it is not seemed in the practicality.

The toilet is always outside the room with basic facilities.

We recommend you to drink mineral water or the boiled or using water purification pills or drops.

Most of the foods are cooked in the kitchen of tea houses. They serve you with different varieties of delicious Nepali and continental dishes. The most popular Nepali food is daal bhat (rice and lentils) with some mixed vegetable curry. Garlic soup is popular as it helps you with acclimatization. You could better be vegetarian in the mountains. All hotels in cities and guesthouses in trekking serve the vegetarian food. It’s a very personal question as expenses depend on habit. Normally, in Kathmandu you can allocate about USD 10 to 15 per person per lunch or dinner. 15) What is the social and environmental responsibility of Himkala Adventure for this trip?

The situation of environment in Nepal is in considerable stage due to so many factors caused by global warming, human activities, and adverse effects of natural incidents. Nepal is in between two giant countries like China and Nepal. The ozone layer is depleting and the atmosphere is getting heated. So, its direct effect is to the Himalayas that the snow is melting day by day and the sea level is rising. It is due to population growth, people are clearing the forest and the soil is being eroded. As a part of society, and our trekking related activities are directly concerned with the social and environmental things. We request you to have a travel-insurance policy to cover theft, loss, medical problem & emergency helicopter evacuation from high altitude places before coming Nepal. Choose a policy to cover your emergency high altitude helicopter evacuation with all medical insurances for trekking in high altitude in the Himalayas of Nepal.  Your travel insurance is always needed before going in any high altitude trekking.  Please check your travel insurance policy which doesn’t exclude mountaineering or alpinism.  Although you will not be engaging in these activities in your trekking, you might have problem convincing the insurance company of this fact.  Rescue insurance need to cover an emergency helicopter evacuation or a charted flight from remote mountain trails of Nepal as well as international medical evacuation. Accommodation and Meals:

Accommodation and Foods in the Himalayan region of Nepal cannot be compared with any developed countries in the world. Toilets and washing facilities are shared and rudimentary. This trekking is completely home-stay based trekking through the priveleged Chepang settlement. You could enjoy the typical local food.

Money Matters:

Please note that most establishments in Asia will not accept foreign currency notes that are old, torn or faded and they can be very difficult to exchange or extra fees added when exchanging at banks. Please ensure that you have new, clean notes.

The official currency of Nepal is the Nepali Rupee (NPR). ATMs can be found only in major cities of Nepal like Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Bhaktapur etc. The government of Nepal has banned the import, export and use of 500 and 1000 Indian rupee notes in Nepal. You make sure that you won’t carry these notes upon arrival in Nepal, otherwise they are confiscated and you may be fined.

Please make sure that the foreign currency notes that you have are new and clean notes because old, torn or faded foreign currency notes in Nepal are very difficult to exchange or extra fees added when exchanging at banks.

While travelers cheques have security advantages exchanging them can be a lengthy process, commissions can be high (up to 10%) and they can be difficult to change in rural areas, on weekends and public holidays. If you choose to bring travelers’ cheques, make sure they are a major brand and major currency.

Tipping is not mandatory. It is not anyone’s right asking for tips but if you are happy with the service, you could tip the staffs. It is entirely a personal preference. Tipping could be significant to them who took take great care of you in your traveling period. Himkala recommends that you could tip any intended recipient by any member of the group than collected and passed on by the group leader.

Note: Please do not tip with coins or dirty and ripped notes. This is culturally taken as an insult.

Local Dress in Nepal:

Nudity is a sensitive issue in Nepal. Women should avoid wearing shorts and sleeveless tops in public places where this might be seen as inappropriate. Remove shoes before entering certain holy places. Non-Hindus are not permitted in some temples.

Chepang Cultural Heritage Trail

The route walks amidst the Mahabharat Range of central Nepal. It is positioned to the north of Royal Chitwan National Park, and linked via the Barandabhar Corridor Forest. There is a mixture of dense, broad-leafed deciduous forest along with chir-pine forest, and areas of settlement and cultivation. There are also beautiful groves of Nepal’s National Flower, the rhododendron, which burst into flower in the early spring. The highest point along the trek is Siraichuli Hill (1945 meters). The trek features a community of mixed ethnicity, including Magars, Gurungs, Giripuris, as well as Chepangs. You can take advantage of this diversity as each group offers its own cultural program. A typical Chepang staple is dhindo (millet, buckwheat, corn, or barley flour mixed into a thick paste) served with a vegetable curry of eggplant, string beans, leafy greens, potatoes, wild yams, and or stinging nettles. From Jandala, it is just a short two-hour hike back up to Siraichuli Hill to watch the sunset over the highest mountain range in the world. The Chepang ethnic group, usually, live on fruits and roots of the nature. This group still practice shamanism and have strong belief in natural deities, Fire, Water, Wind, as they put it. The sunrise view from Siraichuli is spectacular with 29 different ranges of the Himalayas in view on a clear day. From west to east, some of the major Himalayas in view include: Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I & II, Manasulu, Ganesh, Langtang, and Gaurishanker-Rowaling. This trek is ideal for bird watching. The birds like, Eurasian Jay, White-Browed Shrike Babbler, Mountain Bulbul, Kalij Pheasant, Warblers, Flycatchers, Cuckoos, as well as Laughing and Rock thrushes. When in full bloom, the Rhododendron groves, and several varieties of orchids create a dazzling and colourful landscape. The climate of the area is generally cooler than Kathmandu or the Chitwan lowlands. In winter, be prepared with warm clothing, but during summer months the climate is generally warm.

Client Reviews

I was in Nepal for the Everest Base Camp Trek. Outstanding sceneries and good hospitality. On the way to the base camp, I got an opportunity to visit the Buddhist monastery as well as got some information about Buddhism. That was great. Our guide and porter were awesome. Very kind and helpful. Thank you, TMG.

Trekking with Travel Max Guide was an amazing experience. My selection of trip and the company were excellent and of the right decision. In each moment of my walk, I came across adventure and discovered something new. I remember my first step on the Everest Base Camp. The view was spectacular. Passing through the Sherpa communities and staying in Namche Bazaar is unforgettable. I miss the trip very much. Anyway, thank you so much for your service while I was in Nepal. See you next time for the Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Originally from the United State of America from the city of Los Angeles where life is busy and rush. I made a trip with TMG. It’s a new experience than I excepted. I found Nepalese people really welcoming. They really love tourists. While trekking in the Everest region, I got time to spend with nature, gained plenty of ideas of culture and tradition from the Himalayas. The trip was totally mind-blowing. TMG has a good team spirit and is dedicated to serving guest and trekkers.

Chepang Hill Trail

The Chitwan Chepang Hill Trail, offers a rare combination of cultural and sightseeing. One of the most interesting aspects of the trek is getting a glimpse of the Chepangs and other local communities who live in this mid-hill region of Nepal. Accepting the invitation of the villagers to stay in their beautiful homes as guests and sharing their meals is a journey of discovery in itself. The unique culture in this area, birdwatching, and other natural attractions add to the experience. The Chitwan Chepang Hill Trail begins at Hugdi, between Mugling and Krishna Bhir in Dhading district about 80 kms from Kathmandu , and ends in Shaktikhor. If one is coming from the Chitwan National Park the trail can also be started from Shaktikhor ending at Hugdi.

Hattibang, a major stop on the way, offers good scenery of the surrounding mountains and trek through pristine mid-hill forests. Here one can also experience Magar, Chepang and Giripuri culture, at the several community-run home-stays and community-managed guest house. Siraichuli (1,945 m), one of the highest hills of Mahabharat range, offers spectacular views of the mountains and magnificent sunrise and sunset views. The view includes a wide range of Himalayan peaks such as Rolwaling, Gaurishankar, Langtang, Gorkha Himal, Peak 29, Himalchuli, Manaslu, Annapurna range, Dhaulagiri, and the Royal Chitwan National Park in the Terai. The trek to Siraichuli from Hattibang is challenging through rough landscape and vegetation.

Jyandala village on the trail is a Chepang settlement where tourists can have a cultural experience. A tour of the village and accommodation at village homestay is recommended. Next is Chisapanitar, which is a popular birdwatching site. More than 250 varieties of bird species are found here. The dense forest in this region is also home to other wild animals.

Another interesting place is Uppardang Gadi which used to be the headquarters of Chitwan till early 1962. The remains of a historic fort that defended the surrounding countryside are still here. The fort which sits at 1,275 m is said to have been built by Shatru Bhanjan Shah, the oldest son of Bahadur Shah. The area also offers spectacular views. Shaktikhor, where the trek formally ends gives ample opportunity to visitors for a wholesome cultural experience. Home-stay facilities are available here where visitors can taste the local food and be a part of the local livelihood. Tents from camping up to 10 people are also available here. Cultural shows are also performed by local community members for visitors.

siraichuli trek

Mainly there are two entrances for this beautiful trek i.e. Hugdi (located in between Mugling and Krishna Veer) and Shaktikhor (south from Sauraha, Chitwan). This awesome trek offers various natural sceneries along with adventure and opportunity to experience Chepang and other ethnic group’s culture and traditions. The trail passes through beautiful jungle and mesmerizing views over there, also providing a great chance to encounter some rare and endemic bird including Spiny Babbler, which can be seen and heard here. Apart from birds, many butterflies can be seen with beautiful flowering and non-flowering plants and trees. The great opportunity to experience Chepang culture with their tradition and lifestyle is offered by this trek as there are homestays which may help to interact with them and know more about them. The main destination, Siraichuli hill, is rich in natural heritage with various offerings. The summit of the hill also has a viewpoint from where magnificent views of mountains such as Gausankhar, Dhaulagiri, Langtang, Rolwaling and Manaslu and the Terai belt of southern region can be observed.

However, the main highlight of the trip includes Scenic view of hill side with rolling terraced farmlands, many different species of birds, Rhododendron groves, orchids create a dazzling and colorful landscape, homestay programs with opportunities to stay with different ethnic groups and many more.

Your Guide to Trekking and Hiking in Nepal

Short Treks from Kathmandu

Himalaya View from Nagarkot

The city of Kathmandu lies in a fertile valley surrounded by forested hills and ridges. Rising to a maximum elevation of 2,695 meters, these hills offer excellent opportunities for short treks, day hikes, nature walks, and bird watching tours.

The dense forests leading to these hills are home to a variety of birds, wild animals, butterflies, Himalayan herbs, and wildflowers. The trails are gentle and easy and weave past Newar and Tamang villages. One can enjoy outstanding views of the valley as well as the surrounding mountains from the top.

Nepal is one of the best destinations for trekking and hiking adventures. The Himalayan range stretches across the country from east to west. While hardcore trekkers frequent trails leading to Mount Everest, Annapurna Massif, Manaslu, and Kanchenjunga, the middle hills that lie between these mountains and the major cities offer wonderful opportunities for soft and easy trekking.

Kathmandu, the capital city is an urban jungle filled with concrete buildings and a dense population. Some visitors may find the chaos and pollution overwhelming. A walk to the green hills hemming the city’s rim offers a pleasant escape from the hustle and bustle.

One can take a short day hike or trek for a couple of days, camping or staying at the homes of locals. The walk through the paddy fields and traditional villages offer you an insight into local lifestyle and culture.

Kathmandu is regarded as a sacred valley by Hindus and Buddhists alike and it’s not uncommon to find ancient Hindu shrines, Buddhist monasteries, and meditation caves of Buddhist saints dotting the hillsides surrounding the valley.

During winter, a stunning panorama of Himalayan peaks can be enjoyed from the hills and the ridge tops. The snow-covered summits of Ganesh Himal, Langtang Range, Dorje Lhakpa, Gaurishanker, and Jugal Himal are visible from most places in Kathmandu. On a clear day if you are lucky enough you can spot a tiny glimpse of Mount Everest’s summit.

Some of the popular destinations for short treks from Kathmandu are Phulchowki Hill, Shivapuri National Park, Chandragiri, Jamacho, Champa Devi Hill, Nagarjun Forest Reserve, Chisapani, Sundarijal, Lakuri Bhanjyang, Kakani, Nagarkot, and Dhulikhel. Most of the trailheads lie in the city itself. Vantage points like Nagarkot, Kakani and Lakuri Bhanjyang can be accessed via villages on the outskirts of the city.

The highest hill surrounding the Kathmandu valley is Phulchowki at 2,695 meters. Located in the southern end of the valley, the hill can be accessed from Godavari village.

The rhododendron forest covering the hill turns into a riot of color at springtime as the trees are laden with red, white, and pink blooms. As the hill is covered with wildflowers, it has been named ‘Phulchowki’, which means a ‘hill of flowers’ in Nepali.

The Chisapani-Nagarkot-Dhulikhel trail takes you past traditional farms, Newari villages, and medieval towns. The hike to Jamacho which takes around 3-4 hours each way is the easiest and the shortest hike inside the valley.

Kathmandu is not only a city of historical monuments and heritage sites, but it is also a valley filled with forests, hills, and lookout points from where one can enjoy a Himalayan panorama.

The short treks around Kathmandu are ideal for people who wish to experience the Himalayan scenery without having to journey to the remote mountains.

Trip Overview

Limi Valley Trekking – If you want to trek along the remotest and the least frequented trails of Nepal. Which is culturally diverse, the Limi Valley Trek could appeal to you the most. Limi village trek that runs on the trails banking Karnali River. The longest River in Nepal has a lot of wonderful aspects to offer to trekkers.

Most of the time   Limi Valley Treks , chases the remote trails frequently emerging at traditional villages. Where the lifestyle froze a long time ago and remained the same- nomadic and authentic. Authentic Tibetan culture having typical Tibetan language, tradition, and lifestyle are prominent cultural aspects seen during Limi Valley Trek. Villages like Halji and Gombayok are living museums trekkers encounter during the   trek.   Where they could see the ancient Tibet at its best.

The major highlight of Limi Valley Trek involves the trek up to Gyuo Kharka 5150m. Which caters an opportunity to sight the view that would make you fall in love with the beauty of nature. From the top of this pass, we see the breathtaking beauty of alpine nature that include the Himalayas like Saipal (7031m), Byas Rishi, Api, Kanjirowa, Kanti, Gorakh Himalayas. The beauty nature from here stretches until the Himalayan Peaks in Tibet, which include sacred Peak,   Mt. Kailash, and Gorlamdanda. The view of Lake Mansarovar lying at the   foothills of Kailash   is an enchanting view to observe from the acme.

Trekking to Limi Valley also throws you an opportunity to peep into floral and faunal species, which are rare and endangered. Hundreds of species of herbal plants and animal species like blue sheep, wild horses, and snow leopards can be sighted during the trek if you are lucky enough.

This fascinating trek is an offbeat camping trek in far-west Nepal, where life seems easy despite every hardship the people of Limi Valley have endured for centuries.
