Sailing Adventure in Miami's Biscayne Bay National Park

According to reviewers, this private tour is a must-do while in Miami. During the approximately 3 1/2-hour trip, you'll sail around Biscayne Bay via a wind-powered boat passing sandbars, mangroves and islets along the way. You may even spot dolphins and manatees. Marvel at celebrity homes and the opulent mansions used in popular TV shows and movies on this 90-minute tour from Fiesta Cruises. Tours, which sail around Palm, Star and Hibiscus islands as well as Miami's shoreline, are narrated in both Spanish and English. Reviewers call this a fun activity with an entertaining, informative staff and great music. Many call this a must-do in Miami.

Tickets start at $28 per person 12 and older and $17 for kids ages 4 to 11; children 3 and younger ride free. Cruises leave multiple times daily. The company operates several other tours, including a sunset cruise.

Duck Tours South Beach

Everglades Nature Tours – Semi-Private 1-Hour Airboat Tour

Explore the everglades with a professional "gladesman," who is also a Coast Guard-trained guide, on this one-hour airboat tour. The educational and fun experience offers an opportunity to see alligators, many species of birds, butterflies and native plant life in Everglades National Park. Many tourgoers call this the highlight of their trip and praise the guides for their knowledge of the Everglades ecosystem.

The company offers tours Friday through Monday at several different times in the morning and afternoon. Tickets start at $65 per person ages 6 and older; you must call the company if you are reserving a tour with a child younger than 6. Note that the airboat ramp is located about 35 miles west of downtown Miami and that transportation from central Miami to the departure point is not included in the ticket price. Everglades Nature Tours also offers private walking tours and private airboat tours, among others.

Tourgoers will also have plenty of Instagram-worthy moments thanks to a nature trail walk and a stop at a Native American village. Reviewers enjoy the authentic feel of the small-group tour and the knowledge of the guides. They also mention seeing a variety of alligators.

Prices start at $45 per participant. Tours are available daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Buffalo Tiger Airboat Tours can also customize a private tour, upon request.

Coopertown Airboats – The Original Air Boat Tour

Offering airboat rides since 1945, Coopertown Airboats earns high marks from reviewers for its educational, skilled guides and the abundance of wildlife spotted. The boats travel approximately 9 miles in Everglades National Park. During the 40-minute adventures, tours stop to view alligators, the colorful purple gallinule bird and other wildlife living in the "River of Grass."

Tours are offered daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tickets start at approximately $26 for adults and $15 for children ages 6 to 11. Children younger than 6 ride for free. There is an additional $5 fee to enter the park for anyone 16 or older. The company also offers private tours.

Island Queen Cruises & Tours – Millionaire's Row Cruise

Glide along Biscayne Bay as you pass by the posh homes of "Millionaire's Row," the Port of Miami, Miami Beach and Fisher Island. The 90-minute narrated sightseeing trip is bilingual and offers both air-conditioned indoor seating and outdoor seating with an awning. Snacks, beverages and alcoholic drinks are available for purchase. Most tour-takers enjoy their experience, calling it relaxing. Others say they had a difficult time hearing the commentary.

Even if you've never been to Miami, you've sort of already been to Miami.

This South Florida city has starred countless times on the silver screen and television and is always coming up in popular music too, with many of these Miami-centric works becoming downright iconic.

All of this has painted such a vibrant picture of the city, that whether or not you've ever crossed over the city limits, you have years of stored-up visions of what this city will be like when you finally get there.

Considering all of this, when you visit for the first time, there's a bit of pressure to find the Miami you have always envisioned. I recently visited the city for the first time and the following is an account of how I tried to capture the essence of the city that I had dreamed of while also trying to see a couple of surprises along the way.

I know you're on vacation, but you simply have to wake before dawn and take in a sunrise during your trip to Miami, preferably on your first morning. Darkness gives away to soft light as the sun slowly rises above the Atlantic Ocean, streaking the sky in hues of pink, gold and blue, casting a soft glow over the water and the sand below.

Famed for its prime role in revitalizing South Beach during the heady hedonistic days of the '90s, News Cafe is open 24/7 and located at the heart of South Beach (8th & Ocean Avenue). You’re probably going to pass it anyway so you might as well pull up a chair outside and chill for a bit.

Back in the day, this cafe was frequented by the glamorous, the fabulous and everyone in between as it served up one of the first slices of European cafe culture on South Beach — and today the pulse of the neighborhood still beats strong here.

If you're anything like me, you may know that Art Deco is synonymous with South Beach, but do you know the stories behind the style and the facades? That's where the Miami Design Preservation League's expert guides come in as they take travelers on daily jaunts through the Art Deco District each morning.  The guides tell the stories behind each building (you'll see Art Deco, Miami Modern and Mediterranean Revival on the tour), endearing you to their efforts to preserve these special buildings.

Eat old school

For more than a century, Joe's Stone Crab has been drawing crowds from far and wide for its famed crustaceans and no trip to Miami is complete without a stop here. Located in the vibrant heart of South Beach, Joe's is famed for its succulent stone crab claws plucked from nearby waters, alongside an array of other mouthwatering dishes. Think of it this way: everybody is going to ask you if you went to Joe's, so you might as well!

Sushi may not be the first thing that pops into your head when thinking of Miami, but why wouldn't it be great here? Enter Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill, which is an oasis of Japanese cuisine situated within the historic Plymouth Hotel South Beach (just past the retro-cool lobby and beside the beautiful pool). The menu is overseen by sushi master Toshi Ueki and chefs Bruce and Eric Bromberg and boasts a tantalizing selection of traditional sushi and sashimi, expertly crafted to perfection.

If you're wondering when this piece is going to leave dry land, the time is, well, now. I hooked up with Watersports Paradise — known for boat tours, yacht charters and boat rentals in addition to any other active water pursuit you can think of — for an unforgettable adventure through Miami's waterways.

We saw opulent Millionaire's Row and plied the waters across Biscayne Bay to marvel at the splendor of Star, Palm, Hibiscus and Venetian Islands with the occasional burst of speed to get the heart racing.

Where to stay in Miami on a first trip

On your first trip, you almost certainly have to stay in South Beach. This neighborhood has captured the world's imagination and because you're going to want to see what all the buzz is about, you might as well stay there.

When it comes time to start thinking about where and what type of South Beach hotel you'd like to stay in during your first trip to Miami, among the factors that loom large, two words stand head and shoulders above the rest: Art Deco.

I mean, you can't come to Miami for the first time and not stay in a historic hotel with the flourishes of Art Deco design, can you? And the hotel certainly has to have a fantastic pool, right?

I couldn't imagine it any other way and so that's why I'm glad I posted up at The Plymouth Hotel South Beach.

Located a stone's throw from the Miami Beach Convention Center and opposite Collins Park and its superb Bass Museum, The Plymouth has  more than 100 rooms splashed with sophisticated touches and is a true poster child for Art Deco. So much so that Barbara Baer Capitman used a photograph of the corner exterior of The Plymouth on the cover of her 1988 book Deco Delights.

Stepping inside, you're immediately enchanted by the seamless blend of historic Art Deco charm and contemporary luxury, with the overall atmosphere being a blend of boutique and beach-adjacent vibes.

Speaking of the beach, guests get exclusive access to The Plymouth's private stretch, just a block away between The W and The Setai. Like many great hotels, the lobby is perfect for lingering and I loved hanging out among the lush leaves and a stirring mural by the acclaimed Ramon Chatov. 

Then there's the 1940s Art Moderne pool area, one of the most perfectly formed bodies of water in the city. With its distinctive harlequin tiles and inviting peach and brown colors, it's a quintessential Miami backdrop. Like many first-time visitors to Miami, I left knowing this certainly wouldn't be my last visit and The Plymouth's pool was a big reason.

PEOPLE's 24 Hour Food Tour: Miami

Whether you're looking for a classic, local staple or a buzzy celeb hot spot, here are all the restaurants where you should eat in Miami

Spence was formerly a food editor at People and competed on season 2 of Fox's  Next Level Chef.

Though it’s one of America’s most lively cities, Miami is not always known for its culinary scene — at least if we’re talking about the actual food . Many people go out for a night in South Beach in flashy club attire, hoping to see and be seen at the trendiest new spot…but that doesn’t always equate to a quality meal. Fortunately, there is so much to explore in this city if you go in with a plan and know the right spots, from tiny dives showing off the local Cuban cuisine to those aforementioned celebrity-frequented restaurants that actually serve incredible dishes. Follow this guide to have the perfect day of eating in Miami!

Breakfast: Enriqueta’s

David Beckham once declared Enriqueta's his “favorite place in Miami” on his Instagram story during a visit in 2022, but it’s not anything like the celebrity hot spots you’ll find over in South Beach. This small diner-style Cuban spot has been around since 1964, and they’re perhaps best known for the pan con bistec (a thinly-sliced steak sandwich loaded with fried potato sticks) — but locals know the best time to come is in the morning for the breakfast sandwich with the soft scrambled eggs and cheese practically melting into the buttery Cuban bread. And of course, no Cuban breakfast is complete without a cafecito.

Lunch: Dulce Vida Mexican Restaurant

Cross the bridge over to South Beach and it’s much harder to find a decently-priced meal that’s quick and delicious, but this standing-room-only little taco shop defies the odds. Come to Dulce Vida Mexican Restaurant for the best birria around, including the “birria pizza” (which is really just a massive, super cheesy quesadilla). Though my favorite thing on the menu are the shrimp birria tacos, with the beautifully tender seafood providing a lighter, fresher component to this typically heavy dish.

Dinner: Zaytinya

Celebrity chef José Andrés recently opened the third location of his award-winning Mediterranean restauarant inside the Ritz-Carlton hotel, and the menu is a glorious fusion of Turkish, Greek and Lebanese cuisine. Zaytinya is one of those can’t-go-wrong places, but must-order dishes include the impossibly smooth hummus with harissa chili crisp, whole grilled Mediterranean sea bass and the crispy Brussels sprouts (probably the most famous food on the menu.) Also, you have to order some mujadara — a humble lentil and rice stew that my Lebanese mother made for us every week. Andrés fancies it up with crispy fried shallots and a dollop of soubise yogurt.

Drinks and Dessert: Rao’s

The original New York City location of Rao's (yes, it’s where the jarred pasta sauce comes from) is probably the hardest restaurant reservation to snag in the country — you have to have a standing table that goes back generations, or be invited by someone who does. This latest outpost in the Loews Miami Beach hotel, which opened earlier this year, is decidedly much easier to get into, though in my experience your best bet is to go later at night and sit at the bar. The best thing I’ve had on the menu here — and truly one of the best desserts I’ve had in my life — is the peanut butter tart, which has a graham cracker crust and an almost cartoonishly perfect pour of chocolate ganache on top.

Late-Night Spot: La Sandwicherie

While the Cuban sandwich reigns supreme in Miami, this al fresco French sandwich counter in the heart of South Beach serves the best late-night food in the city. Get the Frenchie, which is made with salami and brie, and be sure to have them load up the cornichons and douse in their homemade creamy French dressing. La Sandwicherie is also conveniently located right across the street from one of South Beach’s only true dive bars, Mac’s Club Deuce, which Anthony Bourdain once called one of his “favorite places on Earth.”

Celebrity Hot Spot: Lucky Cat by Gordon Ramsay

One of the newest on the South Beach scene, this upscale Asian restaurant has already been  frequented  by celebrities like Gloria Estefan and Lisa Hochstein . If you opt to dine at the 8-seat private chef’s table ($225 per person), you’ll get a regularly changing line-up of ten courses that are expertly crafted right in front of your eyes — and maybe even a surprise appearance by Chef Ramsay himself, who has shown up multiple times since Lucky Cat first opened in February.
