10 Spring Oklahoma Day Trips

spring travel okc

by Emery Clark

Spring is a great time to hit the road on a new family adventure! Explore the wonders of the Sooner state with our curated selection of 10 exciting Oklahoma day trips, all within 100 miles of Oklahoma City. From scenic wonders to cultural delights, these Oklahoma day trips promise endless entertainment and unforgettable memories for all.

1. Clinton/Weatherford

Eighty-five miles west of Oklahoma City, you’ll find The Route 66 Museum in Clinton. The exhibits will walk you through the decades of the Mother Road from its dirt beginnings in the 1920s until now. Through photos, videos, music and replicas, your kids will have plenty to touch and explore as they learn about the history of Route 66.

Water-Zoo Indoor Water Park in Clinton is just the ticket for your winter blues! Kept at 82 degrees year-round, this is the perfect place to let your kids burn energy and have a blast doing it. There are multi-level play structures, a lazy river, 500 feet of slides, a wave pool and even an area just for toddlers. Free tubes, parking and life jackets are on-site, so bring a towel and prepare to swim the day away.

In nearby Weatherford, visit the Stafford Air & Space Museum  to see many top-notch air and space exhibits and learn about astronaut Lt. General Thomas P. Stafford who was born right in town! Afterward, stop by Lucille’s Roadhouse  for some tasty food in a fabulous retro setting.

Stop off in the quaint artisan town of Medicine Park for some fun food and shopping on your way back home. Or, head into Lawton itself, where you’ll find Burgess Grill (617 S.W. C Ave.) which has been locally owned since 1962 and offers a large variety of burgers at family-friendly prices.

Situated 75 miles northeast of the metro near Watonga is Roman Nose State Park (3236 S. Highway 8A). Nestled in a beautiful canyon with gypsum rock cliffs and natural freshwater springs, this state park opened in 1937 and is full of fun family activities. Some of these include an 18-hole golf course, mountain biking, swimming pools (late May to early August), tennis courts, a volleyball court, hiking trails, two lakes, trout fishing (November through March), miniature golf, a general store, canoeing, paddle boats, horse stables (spring to fall), pony rides and hayrides. The recently renovated mid-century lodge also boasts a restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some activities and hours are seasonal, so call the park ahead of time at 580-623-7281 to make the most of your visit.

On your way back to the metro, swing over to Eischen’s in Okarche for some of the best fried chicken you’ll ever eat. Kids and adults will love the arcade games and the delicious food and the down-home Oklahoma atmosphere. Eischen’s is open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Established in 1896, it’s a history lesson all its own!

4. Ponca City

Standing Bear Museum and Education is a 63-acre park honoring the Ponca chief with a 22-foot bronze statue, walking trails, a peaceful memorial grove, pond and an outdoor interpretive center. Inside the museum, see displays of artwork and educational materials focused on the diverse Native American heritage and cultures.

Other popular stops are the Conoco Museum and Cann Gardens . The gardens feature color-coordinated beds and a lilly pond with fish you can feed. Brace Books & More is a fun stop for families. The independent bookstore has fun toys, gifts and, of course, books for all ages.

Travel 100 miles northwest of the metro to find Enid, located on the historic Chisholm Trail. To learn more about the area and the largest land run in history, head over to The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center . You’ll find exciting exhibits about Oklahoma throughout its history and you can even walk through a living history village on the grounds of the museum to explore original buildings built at the turn of the century!

After that, head over to Leonardo’s Children’s Museum to get all the wiggles out. The museum features an outdoor playground with a three-story wooden castle, mazes, slides, swings, a water table, tot area and a dinosaur dig. Inside you’ll find tons of great hands-on learning exhibits that your kids will love. From the critter clubhouse to the medical clinic and tinkering exhibit, there are hours of fun to be had here.

Just down the street is the Territorial Capital Sports Museum . This museum houses a huge collection of sports artifacts and memorabilia and will delight the little (and big) sports fans in your family. It is a great place to learn about Oklahoma’s athletes and teams, featuring football, baseball, golf, rodeo, Olympics, women’s athletics and more.

For a unique view of this historical town, hop on the First Capital Trolley  for a 45-minute tour that will immerse visitors in the town’s history and colorful characters. Kids adore riding around on the trolley and the recorded narration of historic stories and buildings will fascinate the adults. Catch it at the corner of 2nd & Harrison on Saturdays at noon or 2 p.m. year-round.

7. Stillwater

Just 65 miles north of Oklahoma City is Stillwater, where you’ll find the Oklahoma State University Botanic Garden . The vignettes through the gardens offer families a variety of places and plants to examine. The children’s play area features a playhouse and tree swing and the Tree Walk Village encourages creative play. On the first and third Saturdays of the month, from 10 a.m. to noon, children can enjoy varied activities in the Model Train Garden, which features a running train.

For kids who love insects, OSU’s Insect Adventure  is a must. This is Oklahoma’s only live bug petting zoo and it is open the first and third Saturday of every month. Just past the OSU campus, visitors can find a large collection of beautiful arachnids, insects and other arthropods to delight your little bug-lovers. A knowledgeable staff is on-site and ready to answer any questions from curious little visitors.

For lunch, head to Eskimo Joe’s , a Stillwater staple since 1975. Grab some cheese fries and pick up Joe’s shirts for the whole family to remember their Stillwater outing! Then, swing by and see the Optimus Prime (2207 E. 6th Ave.) or BumbleBee (5104 W. 6th Ave.) Transformer statues that stand outside the two G&M Body Shop locations on the west and east side of Stillwater. They’re sure to dazzle young spring breakers!

8. Davis/Pauls Valley

oklahoma day trips, stillwater

A short distance away is the Arbuckle Wilderness Park , which kids are sure to love. Drive your car through winding roads and meet exotic and native animals all along the way! Food pellets are available to purchase and the animals will readily snatch them up from your car window, which is sure to make little visitors squeal with excitement.

Want to see how things are made? Visit the Oklahoma-made Bedre Chocolates manufacturing facility to watch through floor-t0-ceiling windows as delicious chocolates, and chocolate-covered treats, are created.

While you’re in the area, visit the Toy & Action Figure Museum  located in Pauls Valley. It is packed with more than 13,000 action figures and hundreds of drawings. Kids and collectors alike will be thrilled with the displays.

9. Tulsa/Jenks

oklahoma day trips, stafford air and space

The Tulsa Air & Space Museum  has every era of Oklahoma aviation on display and many hands-on activities for the kids. Plus, the price of admission includes an experience in one of the many full-dome planetarium shows that run throughout the day. Your little aeronauts and astronauts will be over the moon!

No Tulsa visit is complete unless you swing by to say hello to the Golden Driller (4145 E. 21st St.). He’s a massive 76-foot statue that has stood proudly at the fairgrounds since 1966. As one of the tallest free-standing statues in the country, he is the official Oklahoma state monument!

This wild guide provides information on must-do attractions, shares how you can directly contribute to the Zoo’s conservation efforts and includes helpful tips to know before your visit.

The 10 Wildest Things to Do at the OKC Zoo:

1)          Splash into Spring:

Add a splash of fun to your trip with the Zoo’s Sea Lion Presentation!  Guests will learn about the importance of underwater world, while meeting the incredible sea lions and harbor seals the Zoo is home to.

Spring break presentations will happen daily at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Sea Lion Presentation Stadium. Cost is $5 per person. Children two and under are free.

2)         Take your Zoo Trip to New Heights:

Camel rides are back at the Zoo ! Enjoy a ride on a dromedary camel, and find out why this attraction rises above the rest!  Camel rides are $6 per person and take place from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. daily. Free photo opportunities are included.

3)          “Lettuce” Have Some Fun:

Get eye-to-eye with the world’s tallest mammal! Guests can feed leafy lettuce or sustainably-sourced browse to the Zoo’s giraffes as part of the Zoo’s giraffe feeding experience. Have you herd that the Zoo’s giraffe herd is growing by two? 20-year-old, Ellie, and 5-year-old, Julu, are expecting their calves in May 2021!

Feeding opportunities are from 11 a.m. to Noon and 2 to 3 p.m. daily. Cost is $5 per person. Meet these gentle giants, and find out why this is often guests’ favorite experience!

4)          Encounter the Wild:

Go behind the scenes and listen to a private caretaker chat before interacting with some of the Zoo’s most popular animals at one of the Zoo’s five Wild Encounter experiences including grizzly bears, bison, Galapagos tortoises, California sea lions and Asian elephants. Wild Encounter prices vary. Maximum of ten individuals permitted for each experience. For additional information, go to www.okczoo.org/we.

5)          Get Your Flock on with a Flamingo Mingle:

Home to Chilean and American flamingos, the Children’s Zoo habitat offers the opportunity to “wing it” and make wild memories with your flock. Feedings happen daily from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and 3:30-4:30 p.m. Cost is $7 per person.

Family Guide to the Best Things to do in Oklahoma City | OKC with Kids

View of Scissortail park and the skyline of Oklahoma City, OKC

Sharing is caring!

Spring Break can be a long week with kids begging for screens or whining of boredom. For an exciting and memorable Spring break this year, take the kids to Oklahoma City. In OKC with kids you’ll find family fun that is affordable, educational, interactive and will create lifelong memories.

I’ve lived only hours from OKC for 5 years and just now discovered the plentiful activities and adventures from this fun city. My kids are already begging to go back to try some new activities and re-visit our favorites. Seeing OKC with kids brings fun and adventure for all ages.

Mom and 4 kids walk under the scissortail structure on a bridge in OKC

For the sake of writing and reading, I’ll abbreviate Oklahoma City to OKC for the rest of this post.

To maximize time on your trip in OKC, I’ve created a sample 4-day itinerary at the end of this post. Be sure to scroll down to have your next vacation all planned out for you!

**Our family partnered with Visit OKC to experience this city and share the things we loved

Why go to OKC with kids?

Okc is close.

Our family of six lives in the DFW area, which is under a 3-hour drive to OKC. With so much to do and see in the area, I’m sure we will be back for more fun. From the Metroplex it is a quick, traffic-free drive to a new state and new experiences.

If you fly into the Will Rogers World Airport (say that 3 times fast!) you will find an easy-to-use airport. It is a smaller airport (25 gates) but has plenty of flights daily. Rental cars are easily accessible making your transition to your vacation quick and simple. The airport is only 10-15 minutes from the downtown area so you can get started on the fun right away.

4 kids hands with OKC oklahoma City Tattoos

With Oklahoma being in the middle of the country, it is close to so many areas.

OKC is Affordable

Accommodations, food, and entrance fees were so reasonable. It didn’t hurt that gas was only $1.85 a gallon and parking was free nearly everywhere. Your hard-earned money goes further in Oklahoma.

OKC is Family-Friendly

Every where we went we saw kids and families. They were welcomed to the restaurants and museums. The people were friendly and kind. It’s Southern hospitality at its finest!

Family of 6 sitting in myriad Botanical Garden Crystal Bridge

A major benefit of going to OKC during spring break is that it won’t be crowded. The entire state of Texas has spring break during the same week in March. During spring break in Texas, all of the kid-friendly venues are teeming with people. Getting out of state, although really close, will ensure a family-friendly environment without all the chaos.

OKC Offers a Variety of Experiences without the big-city craziness

Sometimes travelling in a big city can feel chaotic, busy and overstimulating. Travel time can be exhausting and frustrating. But OKC was the perfect combination of laid-back, relaxing but so much to do.

Time between locations was reasonable. There was no traffic to deal with.

Where to Stay in OKC?

While there are plenty of places to stay in Downtown OKC, we enjoyed our stay at the Aloft downtown OKC.

4 kids at Aloft Hotel front in Oklahoma City

Aloft OKC Downtown

We had a perfect set up with adjoining rooms at the Aloft. Our bedroom had a king bed and the kids room had 2 queens with a toddler air mattress for our baby. Having two bathrooms made it feel like home so we could have the space we needed.

Kid-friendly

The staff interacted with and loved on the kids. From little gifts upon check-in to candy and a warm greeting in the lobby everytime we went by it felt like a exciting home away from home.

The lobby and eating area at Aloft are modern and fun.

A man break the pool triangle at Aloft Hotel Billiards in downtown OKC

We certainly loved the Billiard table and corn hole games for family fun while we were at the hotel. In fact, my husband and I even snuck in a little date night in the lobby after the kids were asleep. (We have a kid old enough to babysit now!)

Food at the Hotel

The Aloft Hotel in downtown OKC offers a breakfast area called “Refuel”. They have various menu items priced at $8/bowl. Gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options are offers, which I thought were delicious. But the kids much preferred the french fries with bacon and eggs (The Original). The Refuel area also offers breads, cereal, juice, snacks and fruit for purchase.

You’ll also find a Bar and food area called “Remix” (*no kids allowed). With modern and hip design, you can enjoy food and drinks before going to bed at night.

The Aloft Hotel is in a great location for easy access to everything OKC has to offer.

While many of the attractions in OKC are driving distance, there are plenty of Lime scooters available to rent around the hotel. The Riverwalk in the Bricktown area is close enough for a walk or electric scooter.

Oklahoma Science Museum in OKC with kids

Do not miss the science museum in Oklahoma City! We have been to several Science Museums around the country. We always love them. They are so interactive and educational. But, I dare say the OKC science museum was our family’s favorite of all!

The museum offers live science shows, movies, and scheduled interactions planned throughout the day. These are all included in your entrance fee. Be sure to check the schedule when you arrive and decide what you want to attend. Set an alarm or you may just play right through the scheduled event!

We originally planned half a day in this location. We ended up spending 5 hours and coming back later for another hour of fun at the end of the day. And we wished we had even more time.

I would plan a full day for this museum. It has 2 levels and multiple exhibits. All my kids from ages 3-11 were completely enthralled and engaged the entire time we were at the museum.

Oklahoma City Zoo

This is a large zoo with many different animals and enclosures. All the favorites are accounted for; lions, tigers, giraffes, zebras. But I loved a few of the more rare sightings like leopards, red pandas, wallabys, and rhinoceros.

a girl looks surprised by the tiger behind her at the OKC zoo

Don’t miss the amazing Children’s zoo if you are in OKC with kids. There are plenty of play areas with animal enclosures all around. The kids can feed and pet the goats, hop with wallaby’s and swing with monkeys as they play at the zoo.

Kids will love the close look they get on the animals at OKC zoo. It is well-planned for optimal viewing and a nice pleasant walk around the area.

One of our kid’s favorite parts was the statues of the animals we were looking at. They could touch, climb on and interact with the animal in a safe and fun way while seeing the live version in the enclosure.

Mom and Toddler with pink Flamingos in the back at the oklahoma City Zoo, OKC with kids

The presentations at StingRay bay, Sea Lion and the giraffe feedings happen throughout the day. Check the schedule to attend those events.

OKC zoo also offers live “Ask a Keeper” programs throughout the day. Meet near each animal habitat for a 15-minute chat with the experts.

  • Galapagos Tortoise 10:30
  • Big River Aquarium 11:30
  • Great EscAPE 1:30
  • Red Panda 2:30
  • Cassowary 3

The zoo has a golf-cart train ride, called the Elephant Express Tram, that will take you around the whole zoo. Once you board there are 4 stops where you can get off and on at your leisure.

If the kids need a little downtime, head over to the jungle gym area to let them mimic the animals and play, swing and climb.

  • Oklahoma History Center

If I’m being honest, I was a little worried my kids would not be interested or engaged at a History Museum. I thought this would be a short stop on our schedule. I was so wrong.

Inside this rather large building that hosts other businesses and conference rooms, the History Center is four separate exhibit spaces – 2 upstairs and 2 downstairs.

A girl pours into a cup on a steamboat exhibit at the Oklahoma History Center in OKC

You’ll find authentic historical pieces that you can’t touch. Right next to it, there will be a ‘hands on’ play area with a similar piece. The museum provides dress-up clothing and props so the kids can create and play to the end of their imagination.

As an adult, I enjoyed the time to read or learn about Oklahoma history as my kids were fully immersed in creating their own plays about history.

My oldest boy played a video game about drilling oil as my girls set up a dinner on a steamboat. My toddler just loved getting dressed up. And they all got on stage to sing and dance to the musical “Oklahoma.

Museum of Osteology or Skeleton Museum

Don’t miss this unique and incredible museum on the south end of OKC with kids. Here you will find one giant room with skeletons of large animals hanging from the ceiling or standing on the floor. Both the upper level and lower level are lined with skeletons from every animal imaginable behind glass cases.

Before you head inside, check out the flesh eating beetles cleaning off the next skeleton for display.

Inside the large 2 story room, Grab a scavenger hunt (3 different levels of play) and get started seeing the inside structures of your favorite animals.

spring travel okc

I especially liked going to the skeleton museum right after we saw live animals at the Oklahoma Zoo. It was fascinating to see their insides with everything so close together, too.

Giraffe Skeleton at Osteology Museum in OKC

I was fascinated by the skeletons from the snake, miniature frogs and bats. We all learned things about animals we didn’t know before.

My toddler was a little confused by what she was seeing and with nap time coming on was a bit cranky. But as we headed upstairs, she found a child’s paradise of stuffed animals, animal puzzles, books and toys. She was set playing so the big kids and I could keep working on our scavenger hunts. With the open area, she could play safely while we enjoyed the skeletons.

spring travel okc

The best part of our time at the Skeleton museum was dissecting owl pellets. For an extra cost, each person gets their own owl pellet. You never know what you will find inside, but it will definitely be a skeleton.

Sit at a table set up with tweezers and a laminated bone guide to discover what’s inside. your pellet. What began with a bit of disgust that this was owl “waste” soon turned into delight as my kids discovered small animal bones and created their own skeleton to take home.

And of course, we left with another herd of stuffed animals which were so reasonably priced as a souvenir.

Outdoor Symbolic Memorial and National Memorial Museum

The place of the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 is now a beautiful symbolic memorial.

Toddler looks over the reflection pool at the Oklahoma National Memorial Plaza

There are two large walls with a reflecting pool in the middle. One tower reads 9:01… the time of innocence. The other wall reads 9:03 the beginning of healing. The time in between, when the bomb went off, is now a peaceful rest place for those who lost their lives.

You will also see the survivor tree that is still standing after the bombing and is thriving up on a little hill.

There is also a museum to visit dedicated to anti-terrorism. It is free on the 25th of each month. My kids were a little young to internalize the heavy topic, so we didn’t go inside the museum. But the outdoor memorial was peaceful and we were able to talk to our older kids about what occurred here.

National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum

Dig into the states history and culture with art and historical relics from Cowboys, Indian and other founders of the state.

We loved the rodeo display with screens playing the events for us to enjoy.

The old town replica included a dark street with a bakery, saloon, schoolhouse, church, bank and more. The virtual reality of the dust storm hitting Oklahoma was powerful and impactful.

Much of this museum is an art display. Several rooms dedicated to Western, Cowboy or Indian works of pottery, art and sculptures.

A girl stands under the lights in an Old West Town in the National Cowboy and Western museum in OKC

From the lobby, head outside for walking paths around statues and a creek that is peaceful and the perfect place to let the kids roam.

In April, this museum will open an outdoor play space for kids. We only saw the construction, but my kids were dying to come back to enjoy the activities.

Play in OKC with Kids

Scissortail park.

Do not miss this incredible park. It opened in October 2019 and is completely free. There are so many play features including a tall tube slide, rock climbing walls, sand boxes and rope climbing. A section of the park is fenced off with officers patrolling the exit. Perfect for keeping the whole family safe as the kids play.

Net climbing at Scissortail Park in OKC with kids

Make time to walk over the bridge right behind the park to find the Scissortail structure that is the icon of OKC, and where this park gets its name. The scissortail bird is the state bird of Oklahoma. You won’t miss this eye-catching structure. as you drive under the bridge during your time in OKC. Getting up close and personal makes this a great place with kids.

The park also includes tons of space for playing, running, or biking or scooting along the paths.

Factory Obscura – Mix Tape

It’s hard to describe this art installation in downtown OKC. These rooms have been completely transformed into art that you can touch, climb and walkthrough. There is even a tunnel to climb up and slide down a slide to come out in the underwater world.

Colorful front of Factory Obscura Mix tape art installation in Oklahoma City, OKC with kids

Make sure to include 3D glasses to enhance your viewing experience. We found that the glasses didn’t stay on the kids long, so maybe just a couple pairs to pass around.

This is a maze of rooms with multiple entry and exit points, so we were a bit worried about losing a kid as they climbed through a tunnel. Luckily, everything is one big circle and once you are familiar with the layout, you can go around again and again.

Myriad Botanical Gardens

The Myriad Botanical Gardens are in downtown OKC and are completely free! They include a walkway around a duck pond, water cascading underneath the crystal bridge and even a stage and seating for performances.

The Children’s garden is an incredible play space with garden elements throughout. There is even a shaded structure that is a splash pad area for those hot summer days.

2 kids play in a miniature house at the children's garden in Myraid botanical gardens

Crystal Bridge is a giant greenhouse that includes plant life from the rain forest as well as the desert. As soon as you walk into the warm, humid climate, you are immersed in a rain forest. The path takes you up to the canopy of the trees to look down into the foliage.

HeyDay Bricktown

Right in the heart of the Bricktown shopping area is a full-scale bowling alley and arcades. The giant screens at the end of the lanes, fun music and food delivered right to your table create the perfect ambiance for a night to remember in OKC with kids.

Have some pizza and play a few games at Hey Days during your family stay. They have shoe rentals and bowling balls of all sizes so everyone in the family can have a great time.

A toddler grins as she holds a bowling ball at Hey Day bowling lanes in Bricktown OKC

Eating pizza while taking turns bowling and cheering each other on is perfect for the whole family.

The kids had a great time, but even with the bumper pads, I got 5th out of 6 in my family. I guess mom needs more time bowling! My kids were thrilled to beat me!

  • Plaza Walls

Grab a treat at Pie Junkie or Roxy’s as you wander and soak in the art in the Plaza District. The cool thing about these walls and fences is that they are constantly being rotated and renewed. You can even apply to put your own artwork up!

Hideaway Pizza

Hideaway pizza is delicious and unique to OKC. There are several locations around the city, so find one downtown or a large location a bit further out. Hideaways is so kid-friendly with plenty of activities and food just for them.

The pizza is amazing! The cheese is plentiful and the crust is baked to perfection. If you like tomatoes and mozzarella, Paradise Pie lived up to its name perfectly.

Hideaway pizza is must-visit during your OKC with kids’ visit.

Bricktown Brewery

Although there are several locations, the one in the Bricktown district is authentic. Located in an old brick building, you find a unique and delicious food combined with cool ambiance.

You must get the bottled root beer! Its some of the best we’ve had. With pizza, burgers, sandwiches and more on the menu, everyone will find exactly what they are hungry for.

Grilled Macaroni and cheese with tomato soup at Bricktown Brewery OKC

The restaurant provides coloring pages while the kids wait and kid meals that are larger in portion size. This was a great location for families. In fact, nearly every table we saw had kids at it!

Braums is one of our favorite hamburger and ice cream joints in DFW, but it actually all started in Oklahoma. You can take a farm tour just southwest of OKC of where it all began. You’ll see many Braum’s locations around OKC. Make sure you try their burgers, fries and a thick and creamy hand-dipped ice cream shake.

The Best Time to Visit Oklahoma City

spring travel okc

Bridging the past and the present,  Oklahoma City celebrates the frontier's history while also looking toward the future. The city’s evergreen attractions, green spaces, and recreational offerings stay open all year long, so unless you’re in town to attend a specific festival or event, picking the best time to visit mainly boils down to a matter of personal weather preference. Many folks head to OKC in June and July to make the most of summer vacations, but spring and fall offer what many visitors consider the most pleasant stretches of the year.

Weather in Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City swings from cool winters to muggy summers. Although December, January, and February temperatures can dip down into the 30s, days tend to hover in the 40-degree range, and there’s not much snow to speak of to hinder outdoor plans. The annual rainy season lasts from late spring into early fall—visitors should be prepared for sudden cloudbursts and follow any guidance issued from the National Weather Service regarding tornado watches and warnings. Summer heat easily can soar upwards of 85 degrees with high humidity, making the comfortable seasons of spring and fall perhaps the most appealing times of year to visit.

Year-Round Attractions

Albeit a somber introduction, the  Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum is a good place for guests to familiarize themselves with the city's resilient spirit that followed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing on April 19, 1995. Other popular attractions that stay open year-round include the  Oklahoma City Museum of Art (home to a dazzling Chihuly collection),  Science Museum Oklahoma , and the  National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum . The  Oklahoma City Streetcar and the  Spokies bike share program make navigating much of the city a breeze.

Populated with galleries, restaurants, and vibrant street art, the Plaza District invites exploration on foot. Meanwhile,  First Fridays on the Paseo open doors throughout this arts-driven neighborhood for visitors to wander in and out while enjoying live music and food truck cuisine. Or, slide behind the wheel and travel the Mother Road — Route 66 passes through the city’s  Uptown 23 rd  district .

Popular Events and Festivals

No matter what time of year you choose to discover Oklahoma City, you’ll find something entertaining going on. Here’s a month-by-month rundown of popular activities, festivals and events:

Oklahoma City’s winter temperatures rarely dip below 30, and negligible snowfall means there’s no reason to stay holed up inside. The holiday decorations may be coming down, but the sense of spirit and goodwill lingers throughout the city well into January. Throw on a coat, head outdoors, and ring in the new year.

Events to check out:

• The  American Banjo Museum ’s events and exhibits enlighten visitors about the origins and adaptability of this versatile instrument.

• The sleek new $288 million  Oklahoma Convention Center opened in January 2021, featuring a vast exhibition hall, two ballrooms, meeting spaces, and an outdoor terrace overlooking Scissortail Park.

The weather may be cool, but Oklahoma City’s friendly warmth comes through loud and clear. Grab your sweetheart, make dinner reservations, and explore some of the city’s more romantic date-worthy destinations for Valentine’s Day.

Events to check out:

• Book reservations for a Valentine dinner to remember at one of OKC’s most romantic restaurants.  The Paseo Grill ,  Redrock Canyon Grill , and the  Metro Wine Bar and Bistro are all dependably solid choices that are guaranteed to impress.

• Hop on a two-wheeler for an Art and Architecture cruise through the city led by  Ride OKC Bike Tours and Rentals .

In like a lion and out like a lamb? With gentle weather transitions, there's no need to beware of the Ides of March here. Oklahoma City welcomes spring's return in festive ways, like St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and other seasonal fun.

Events to check out:

• Raise a pint of Guinness. Oklahoma City's St. Patrick’s Day lineup of events includes a downtown parade, block parties, concerts, a 5k race, and pub crawls galore. Slainte !

April showers might put a slight damper on outdoor activities, but don’t let a little rain cancel your fun. You can always duck inside indoor attractions if a sudden downpour occurs. Just be prepared by packing an umbrella, splash through any puddles and carry on.

• A local tradition since 1967 and the signature annual Arts Council event, the  Festival of the Arts brings the community together in Bicentennial Park to showcase works from international artists across all forms of media.

• The city’s coming back to life after the winter, making spring a great time to appreciate seasonal flowers in bloom. The  Myriad Botanical Gardens proposes 17 acres of greenery for strolls amid cheerful tulips and daffodils.

Temperatures are on the rise but haven’t yet hit swelter levels just yet, making May an appealing time of year to visit before summer heat sets in. Dress in layers, and you’ll be ready for everything from hot days to cool evenings.

• Feast on hearty Wild West cuisine at the  National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum ’s annual Chuck Wagon Festival. Hands-on activities, artisan demos, music, face painting, and kids’ crafts round out the weekend.

• Farmers markets are firing up for the summer season, providing great opportunities to sample local flavors. The  Historic Farmers Public Market of Oklahoma City holds year-round Saturday markets featuring a diverse roster of vendors covering everything from produce, meats, dairy and baked goods to jams, herbs, spices, tea, salsa, and desserts.

Summer’s finally here, and Oklahoma City makes the most of its great outdoors. Daily June temps top out in the 80s, so dress in light clothing to stay comfortable. You'll probably be outside for much of your visit, and it's an ideal time of year to drink and dine on outdoor patios.

• Oklahoma City’s proud of its LGBTQ+ community. Show your support during  OKC Pride Week when thousands of attendees converge for a big parade, live entertainment, and lots of rainbow-adorned fun.

• The  deadCENTER Film Festival is the largest event of its kind in Oklahoma, delighting movie buffs with ten days of film screenings, panel discussions, classes, script readings, and opportunities to mix and mingle with filmmakers.

• Oklahoma City commemorates its Native American heritage and culture with the  Red Earth American Indian Festival .

Summer sizzles in Oklahoma City; don't forget the sunscreen and sunglasses. Look for hotels with pool and attractions with water features for a quick cool down. Or, just stay comfortable in the air conditioning at indoor attractions like museums and theaters.

•  Scissortail Park provides a vibrant, verdant urban destination for locals and visitors to enjoy with an outdoor roller rink, gardens, pedalboat and kayak rentals, and a cooling “sprayground” for the kiddos.

• July 4 fireworks light up the sky over downtown OKC with public displays visible from the Boat House District and across the city.

Baby, it’s hot outside! August temperatures reach 90 degrees during the day and rarely dip below 80 at night with occasional summer storms popping up. Hearty visitors don't let the weather get them down; they simply refresh with a local craft beer. Or, if you can’t take the heat, fill your itinerary with indoor adventures.

• Walk on the wild side at the  Oklahoma City Zoo , where you can observe and admire the resident lions, tigers, bears—oh my!—and many other animals, birds, and marine life.

The days are still hot, but fall is on the way during the transitional month of September. The University of Oklahoma Sooners football season kicks off in nearby Norman, creating fun opportunities to tailgate and cheer on the home team. Just check the forecast for any rain predictions before heading out to the big game; you might want to watch from a sports bar instead.

• The  Oklahoma State Fair is an annual tradition for OKC families, bursting at the seams with farm-themed activities, live entertainment, educational agriculture, and delicious deep-fried fare.

The leaves are falling, and so is the temperature. Comfortable fall weather in Oklahoma City encourages visitors to enjoy hayrides, apple picking, and spooky Halloween activities. Warm up with a pumpkin spice, maple, or cinnamon latte at any one of OKC's buzzy coffee shops amid the city's thriving cafe culture.

• The State Fair Park hosts “ An Affair of the Heart,” a dizzying collection of antiques and collectibles for sale from more than 500 exhibitors.

• The annual Plaza District Festival gives this energizing neighborhood a chance to shine with visual and performing arts, live music, and food.

• For a spooky good time, haunted attractions, and theme park fun, head to the  Frontier City ’s annual Hallowfest.

Chill out with Oklahoma City's cooler temperatures just ahead of winter’s arrival. Yuletide preparations are in full swing, and decorations are going up, lending a sense of wonder and excitement to the streets and districts of OKC. It's also a great time to browse local shops and boutiques for holiday gifts.

• The city comes alive with holiday spirit during its annual  Downtown in December promotion (which actually kicks off in November), lighting up stores and restaurants with a full calendar of fun activities.

Seasonal fun, colder weather, and showy decorations all add up to happy holidays in Oklahoma City. There's not much snow to speak of, and it's not too cold for a boat ride on the Bricktown canal or a leisurely walk around town to admire the lights and Christmas trees at the state capitol building and North Pole City.

• The annual  Opening Night party ushers in the New Year in style downtown with performing arts, bands, kids’ fun, and fireworks.

Visitors can find the most comfortable temperatures in Oklahoma City in spring or fall. Spring is more likely to be rainier, so book your trip for the fall if you want to spend time outdoors.

July and August are sweltering in Oklahoma City and also humid. But the nights are warm and perfect for eating outside or having a drink on a terrace.

Summer break is when most tourists come to Oklahoma City. You can save money by visiting in the shoulder season of spring or fall.

“The Joy of Travel is by far the best travel agency I have ever used and I have been traveling extensively in the U.S. and abroad, for the past 15 years. I love it when I have the opportunity to go on Joys guided tours. She adds that extra bit of fun and excitement to any trip. I travel several times each year and I am always amazed . . . I never have to worry about anything from the beginning when I call to say, Joy I want to go to...until I get back home. Worry free, stress free. She takes care of everything including anything that might come up while I am on the trip. Joy is a wonderful lady. ”

— DOYLENE HEATON

“What an amazing trip you planned for us!!! I was very skeptical about Mexico and I’m so glad I listened to you. We are beyond impressed with Cancun and would love to come back. The food, people and the hotel were all amazing!! Thank you again for planning this for us. We look forward to more of your suggestions!!”

— BRANDI S

I want to thank you for planning our amazing trip to Cancun Mexico this summer. Everything was great. So easy and fun. The flights were great. The Iberostar was fantastic. Everyone was very friendly and courteous and so helpful. The resort was clean and so beautiful. We were right in the middle with easy access to everything. Food was delicious. We have enjoyed all trips that y’all have booked for us. Thank you so much.

- JESSICA H.

We LOVED everything about the trip. The hotel was AMAZING!! The customer service was great, the hotel was nice, there were many restaurants options. The food was great, and we loved how each restaurant had its own theme. Each restaurant had us in awe- I mean BEAUTIFUL!! Great views of the ocean from the room. The pool was fantastic, it had options for everyone, single and families.

They did an excellent job of taking precautions and we felt they always did a good job of keeping things clean and sanitized. We never had to ask for anything because they were so attentive. My girls loved it, they even had kids camp (we didn’t try only because the girls were having too much fun at the pool). It was nice to have that option in case we wanted to have a date night.

It felt safe, welcoming, and well taken care of. The customer service was unbeatable. 5 stars overall.

I am happy to give you a call if needed because I could go on. Thank you, we will for sure be going back and bringing our whole family next time.

- JESSICA H.

My wife and I have had the pleasure of working with Joy and her company, The Joy of Travel since January of 2020. You will not find anyone more hard working, conscientious, persistent, knowledgeable and pleasant than Joy! She helped us through the difficult times in 2020 and 2021 with our planned trips to Alaska, Southern Italy and Greek Escape that had to be cancelled and rescheduled multiple times due to COVID-19. She has an optimistic and can do attitude that helps travelers such as us get through any difficulties we encounter. I recommended Joy and her team to anyone I talk to about our trips and tell them about the great job she has done for us. Joy is our go to person when we are thinking about our next trip. She works hard to make travel a "Joy".

Keep on trucking: How Love's Travel Stop grew from one store to an international empire

Love's Travel Stops now has nearly 650 stores catering to casual drivers and professional truckers in 42 states.

WATONGA — Harold Wells, 73, has worked for Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores for 51 years, an entire career, after starting out here in one of the late Tom Love's earliest stores.

Al Harper, 70, is still here in Watonga, where he grew up and where he's worked for 24 years in Love's No. 1, the first of what is now nearly 650 Love's Travel Stops and convenience stores catering to casual drivers and professional truckers in 42 states. The company has about 40,000 employees.

Over those decades, Wells and Harper have demonstrated, actually lived out what Love's points to for its success: "humble beginnings, teamwork, work ethic and perseverance."

The Love family, and the family-owned corporation, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary, say those aspects of the company's culture — humble beginnings, teamwork, work ethic and perseverance — have guided its growth since Tom and Judy Love started out in 1964.

Judy Love doesn't say much to the media, but in light of Love's 60th anniversary, she told The Oklahoman:

"When Tom and I opened the first location in Watonga 60 years ago, we couldn’t imagine what this company would become. The journey has been amazing. One thing I know is that we wouldn’t be here without our loyal team members and customers. We are fortunate so I feel that we should help others. That’s why we’ve always given back to many nonprofit organizations."

Dedication and innovation keep longtime Love's employees at work for decades at Love's No 1 in Watonga and at OKC corporate headquarters

Harper said a manager at Love's No. 1 recruited him to take the night shift in 2001, when shoplifters and others were causing the store trouble. It was his second career after 27 years working at a carpet mill until it closed. He said he "got it cleaned up," and has been happy working there ever since.

"I like meeting the people. I told (a supervisor), 'I'll stay here and keep the store going as long as I can,'" the 70-year-old said.

Wells started at Love's in Watonga part time in 1972, when he was working on degrees in math and physics at Southwestern State College in Weatherford, just before it was renamed Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He graduated but stayed with Love's, never looking back.

Wells is Love's manager of retail accounting systems and has lived in Edmond and worked at company headquarters — at suburban 10601 N Pennsylvania Ave. in The Village — for decades. He said every innovation Love's has made over the years has given him something new and exciting to learn. He could have retired 10 years ago, but he's kept at it.

"It's easy to work for a company and believe in what you do," he said, when the company has a reputation like Love's.

Love's Field: A reminder that roots and reputation helped bring the big-hearted Loves big riches

Roots and reputation helped make Love's a top workplace, and helped make the Loves generous billionaires, giving to causes across the state, not just in Oklahoma City.

Love's Travel Stops had $26.5 billion in revenue last year, according to Forbes, making it the ninth-largest private company in the country. Judy Love had a net worth of $10.2 billion, landing her at No. 2 on USA Today's list of "America's richest self-made women."

Symbols abound for "humble beginnings, teamwork, work ethic and perseverance." Add benevolence, and the symbol Jenny Love Meyer keeps in her office makes sense. She's a daughter of Tom and Judy Love, and Love's chief culture officer.

The reminder of what it took to get the family and company where they are? A softball trophy, but a replica, making it a reminder of a reminder:

Love's Field, which opened this year . Love's contributed the lead gift of the $37 million that helped pay for the $48 million field and stadium, earning it naming rights. The trophy is a reproduction of the University of Oklahoma Sooners’ 2023 NCAA championship softball trophy.

“This 44,000 square-foot complex is a nod to Coach (Patty) Gasso and all those who have been instrumental to building the Oklahoma softball dynasty and hopefully an inspiration for the female student-athletes who compete in it. They are our leaders of the future,” Love Meyer said. “Love’s is humbled to stand alongside the more than 1,100 donors who graciously supported this project. The $37 million raised is the largest dollar amount privately fundraised for a female-specific facility project in college athletics history.”

Parallels between Love's No. 1 in Watonga and Love's Field in Norman

Raising Love's Field took years and "a village of dedicated people to complete," Love Meyer said. She said she sees parallels to her parents' success after their beginnings in Watonga and Gasso's success after 30 years of "building a softball powerhouse in Norman, Oklahoma."

“With little money to invest and a growing family to support, my parents used a $5,000 loan to lease an abandoned service station in Watonga, a small community 60 miles west of Oklahoma City," she said. "That initial willingness to start and grow a business required confidence, innovative thinking, hard work and perseverance, and is why Love’s is where it is today.

"Similarly, when Coach Gasso arrived in Norman in 1994, she organized practices at a local park and needed to schedule practice in between slow pitch softball leagues. And sometimes had to clean up the dugout from festivities the night before.

"She never gave up. From former OU Associate Athletic Director Marita Hynes, Coach Gasso, softball alumni, to current players, and the university, they persevered through all the challenges. That championship mindset is how success is built.”

How Love's started: Tom and Judy Love 'had two small children to feed and bills to pay'

Nobody in the Love family, or among the earliest employees, could have dreamed that Love's, first called Musket Corp., would ever become such a retail juggernaut, with locations popping up along interstate highways like spring dandelions — plus several other ventures catering to, and supporting, the trucking industry, everyday travelers, and fuel supply chain management.

“When my parents opened our first location 60 years ago, they never imagined what Love’s would grow into," Love Meyer said. "They had two small children to feed and bills to pay and had to figure out a way to do that. My dad had the idea to lease an abandoned filling station, and through hard work, finding ways to learn about the business and, as he would say, working with and hiring people smarter than him, they grew it into what it is today.

"We attribute our success to our team members and customers. They’ve helped us grow into what we are today while remaining true to the family-owned and -operated business model that we know sets us apart from competitors. We always say that if our teams take care of customers, we’ll take care of them, and we think that’s been a pretty good standard to live by.”

Love's rolls both ways, with professional drivers and casual customers

If you're a professional truck driver, Love's is a truck stop. If you're not, Love's is a convenience store with fast food. Chances are, trucker or not, you don't know what all drives the family-owned company.

Love's rolls both ways, of course. Two-thirds of fuel sales are to professional drivers, and two-thirds of in-store sales are to casual customers, the company says. But Love's business is more than gasoline, diesel, and road trip snacks and fast food.

This year, the company plans to add up to 25 new locations, update up to 40 older stores, and rebuild four, among other company expansions, said Shane Wharton, Love's president.

“Six decades ago, (the late) Tom Love opened our first service station in Watonga, Oklahoma, and almost immediately started selling household items to make stopping in more convenient for customers,” Wharton said. “Today, as the only major travel stop that is still family owned and operated, we continue with his innovative spirit by adding new products and improving the experience to give customers more reasons to stop in.”

Four generations of Loves are involved with the company, including billionaire co-founder Judy Love . But numerous others have helped build Love's since 1964, Love-Meyer said.

“While a lot has changed ... the heart of Love’s has not," she said. “We are so grateful for our incredible team members — past and present — whose contributions play a role in shaping our company.

"Growth and innovation of our product offerings, living our core values and culture daily, and dedication to clean places, friendly faces are what this company was started on in 1964. Today, we proudly stand on that foundation and know our best is still ahead of us.”

Love's went on a buying spree in 2023, its biggest year for mergers and acquisitions.

The company acquired EZ GO from Lawton-based Carey Johnson Oil Co., including six travel stops on Oklahoma turnpikes, five on the Kansas turnpike and 11 convenience stores in Oklahoma and Nebraska.

EZ GO, like Love's, features franchise food and owns and operates Back Forty Barbecue at two locations. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Houston-based Musket Corp., owned by Love's, established European operations with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Musket's focus is supplying Love’s Travel Stops with gasoline and diesel and managing the company’s biodiesel program. Subsidiary Musket Europe SARL extends the company's commodity supply and logistics, providing relief for the instability in global fuel supply chains.

Love's also bought OKC-based TVC Pro-Driver, a motor club and commercial driver’s license protection service. It assists drivers and fleets in reducing or dismissing fines, preventing downtime for court, and protecting federal compliance, safety and accountability scores. A subscription provides access to a network of attorneys and discounts on safety solutions, health care and more. Terms were not disclosed.

Love's continues to expand and enhance services for drivers — professional and casual.

Through awards from the Federal Highway Administration's National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program , Love's-owned Trillium Energy Solutions , which Love's acquired in 2016, plans to add to Love’s electric vehicle fast-charging network with new chargers at 29 locations this year.

For truckers driving Freightliners, which Love's said accounts for about half all trucks on the road, Freightliner ExpressPoint is now available at more than 400 Love’s truck care locations, providing light mechanical warranty repair work for Freightliner trucks through Love’s partnership with Daimler Truck North America. Love's rolled out the service in January and plans to expand it this year.

Love's plans 10 new full-service Speedco locations next to its travel stops, 50 maintenance bays and and about 60 emergency roadside vehicles. Love's has owned Speedco since 2017.

Love family philanthropy seen across Oklahoma, elsewhere

Love's donates 2% of net profits to charity and good causes.

"Many know the story of Love’s...," Love Meyer said last year in Love's first-ever Community Impact Report. "And from those humble roots, he built a family-owned and -operated network of travel stops now approaching 700 locations.

"But it’s important to know that from the start, as he built the business, he cared about the communities where the stores were located. It is this caring, combined with a desire to give back, that is the foundation for charitable giving at Love’s. This is certainly one of the legacies my dad left with us. ... Helping others is nothing new for Love’s."

This year, in addition to the debut of Love’s Field, the Oklahoma City Zoo’s Expedition Africa and completely renovated Love's Pachyderm Building opened, the new Women’s Center at Mercy Hospital opened, and Love's Planetarium at Science Museum Oklahoma is scheduled to open.

"Our efforts are certainly not limited to Oklahoma and include building meaningful partnerships to transform communities nationwide," Love Meyer said.

Love's gave away nearly $12 million in 2022, according its 2023 Community Impact Report — 46% to youths and education, 20% to health and human services, 25% to civic and community organizations, and 9% to other needs. Recipients included:

  • $6.9 million to Children's Miracle Network, which has received nearly $50 million in all from Love's.
  • $3.5 million to Science Museum Oklahoma/Love's Planeterium.
  • $150,000 to Operation Homefront.
  • $100,000 to St. Christopher Trucking Development and Relief Fund.
  • $50,000 to Truckers Against Trafficking.

In addition, Love's corporate employees donated $676,000 to United Way of Central Oklahoma and 1,400 volunteer hours to various causes.

Judy Love, as matriarch, has led the way in the Love family's giving.

Recipients include Positive Tomorrows, the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, the University of Oklahoma , Oklahoma State University, Children’s Miracle Network and United Way, as well as out-of-state organizations and groups.

All that giving, and all that innovation, have kept the Loves' reputation growing, and Love's competitive and growing, for 60 years.

“As Love's has expanded its network and offerings over the past 60 years, we’ve been able to stay true to who we are and what we represent, clean places with friendly faces who work hard every day to get customers back on the road quickly," Love Meyer said. "The dedication to helping our customers every day, while innovating and striving to be better, is foundational for Love’s, from our leaders to team members across the nation.”
