Stella Donnelly announces second album ‘Flood’ and shares new song ‘Lungs’
The singer-songwriter will also head out on tour later this year
Stella Donnelly has announced her second album ‘Flood’ – listen to new single ‘Lungs’ below.
- READ MORE: Stella Donnelly: “You have to stand up for people that don’t have a voice”
The forthcoming record is described as the singer-songwriter’s “record of rediscovery: the product of months of risky experimentation, hard moments of introspection, and a lot of transition”.
Featuring 11 tracks, the album will arrive on August 26 via Secretly Canadian. You can pre-order/pre-save it here .
‘Lungs’ comes with an official video that Donnelly co-directed alongside Duncan Wright. “Very loosely based on the Banded Stilts of my [‘Flood’] album cover, the character I play in red is a wobbly adult, doing their best with their new set of legs and responsibilities, trying to make it look easy but very much on unsteady ground,” she explained.
“I wanted this video to celebrate the child, firm in their footholds, intimidatingly honest, not to be messed with, they are the strength and power of this video no matter how much I try to assert myself as the boss.”
The visuals were choreographed by Donnelly’s childhood friends, sisters Billie, Nikki, and Stevie Tanner, who run the Tanner Dance Academy. “They weaved so much beauty in their choreography and also let the dancers apply their own take to the movements which really shines through in the static shots,” Donnelly added.
Recommended
“Grace Goodwin who produced, set-designed and costumed the clip was integral in creating my stilted character and creating a point of difference between that and my child self.”
According to a press release, Donnelly wrote 43 tracks for ‘Flood’ while visiting the rainforests of Australia’s Bellingen and moving around the country. The musician reconnected with her “small self” and took up birdwatching during that time.
“[I] was able to lose that feeling of anyone’s reaction to me,” Donnelly said of the experience of embracing the natural world. “I forgot who I was as a musician, which was a humbling experience of just being.”
She added: “I had so many opportunities to write things in strange places. I often had no choice about where I was. There’s no denying that not being able to access your family with border closures, it zooms in on those parts of your life you care about.”
‘Flood’ looks at “relationships, be them familial, romantic or platonic”, with Donnelly explaining that she “love[s] observing human dynamics”.
“Dynamics between old best friends, or dynamics between housemates, or a relationship where the two people are broken up and haven’t spoken in years. I like getting into the mind of someone who we’ve all been at some point,” she went on.
You can see the tracklist and official covert art for ‘Flood’ below.
01. ‘Lungs’ 02. ‘How Was Your Day?’ 03. ‘Restricted Account’ 04. ‘Underwater’ 05. ‘Medals’ 06. ‘Move Me’ 07. ‘Flood’ 08. ‘This Week’ 09. ‘Oh My My My’ 10. ‘Morning Silence’ 11. ‘Cold’

An utterly joyous experience at Thekla to see Donnelly. Equally at home with a full band or alone on stage with just a guitar. Good songs, great banter with the crowd and both she and the rest of the band seemed genuinely happy to be playing music, something they clearly love doing.
Even if isn't your type of music (and it is for me) you'll be swept along by a bunch of people having a real good time.
Go and see her before she moves on to bigger things and bigger stages, but when she does go and see her on those too.

Venue perfectly suited to Stella and her band. All were in good spirits as her pristine voice drifted to all corners of the room. On top of her sharp lyricism and melodies, the audience were appreciative of the chat coming from the stage. Great choice of support acts too complete with yo-yo tricks and guitar licks. Good stuff! Fun, though poignant gig.
I had a great time. I'm saying this while trying to keep calm. Stella Donnelly was FIRE! I enjoyed the band and the dancing on that one song with all the energy in it. I also enjoyed Faye Webster who I'm a big fan of and her Yoyo tricks! I'd love to hear them play again. What a groovy night!
Such a charming performer! Played her songs with verve, and the new ones did not disappoint. The EP might give a bit of a dark impression of her music. In reality, think more Mechanical Bull, punky and political songs.
Steamy venue, packed since the show was sold out, but it was worth it. Best show I've seen this year. Great singer, one of the best I think, great band, very funny. Can't wait for her to come back to Paris.

NEWS: Stella Donnelly returns with new album ‘Flood’, new single ‘Lungs’ & World Tour
Stella Donnelly has returned, announcing her new album, Flood , out 26th August on Secretly Canadian, and a world tour (on sale on Friday, 13th May).
She has also shared the album’s lead single/video, ‘Lungs’ . Following 2019’s Beware of the Dogs , Flood is Donnelly’s record of rediscovery: “The product of months of risky experimentation, hard moments of introspection, and a lot of transition. Like the many Banded Stilts that spread across the cover, Donnelly is wading into uncharted territory, learning who she is as an artist, and how abundant one individual can be.”
Supple lead single ‘Lungs’ marries crafty percussion with intricate instrumentation and a myriad of insightful couplets given life by multifaceted harmonies, we hear her plead, “ History again teach me like a friend what you know and why,” and this curiosity extends into many of the songs exploring relationships, be them familial, romantic or platonic. “I do love observing human dynamics ,” Donnelly says. “ Dynamics between old best friends, or dynamics between housemates, or a relationship where the two people are broken up and haven’t spoken in years. I like getting into the mind of someone who we’ve all been at some point. ” This interest expresses itself in a unique way on the record as Donnelly regularly “ plays dress-up, ” adopting different faces and personas to help her distil her truest self. In ‘Lungs’ she writes from the point of view of a child whose family has just been evicted.
Donnelly co-directed the video for ‘Lungs’ with Duncan Wright. She comments, “ Very loosely based on the Banded Stilts of my album cover, the character I play in red is a wobbly adult, doing their best with their new set of legs and responsibilities, trying to make it look easy but very much on unsteady ground. I wanted this video to celebrate the child, firm in their footholds, intimidatingly honest, not to be messed with, they are the strength and power of this video no matter how much I try to assert myself as the boss. The clip is choreographed by Donnelly’s childhood friends, sisters Billie, Nikki, and Stevie Tanner, who run the Tanner Dance Academy. “They weaved so much beauty in their choreography and also let the dancers apply their own take to the movements which really shines through in the static shots. Grace Goodwin who produced, set-designed and costumed the clip was integral in creating my stilted character and creating a point of difference between that and my child self.”
During her time in the rainforests of Australia’s Bellingen, one of the many cities she lived in throughout her time writing this album, Donnelly took to birdwatching. By paying closer attention to the natural world around her, she was “ able to lose that feeling of anyone’s reaction to me. I forgot who I was as a musician, which was a humbling experience of just being; being my small self.” Reconnecting with the ‘small self’ allowed Donnelly to tap into creative wells she didn’t know existed; she wrote 43 tracks as she moved out of Bellingen and around the country.
With new locations came new approaches. Donnelly wrote with band members Jennifer Aslett, George Foster, Jack Gaby and Marcel Tussie, which at times felt like experimental kindergarten play, and co-produced the record alongside Anna Laverty and Methyl Ethyl ’s Jake Webb who helped foster an important spontaneity in the studio.

[CANCELED] Stella Donnelly
Tuesday 8 november 2022, 7:00 pm : main stage, tickets: £12.50 + booking fee.
Statement from Stella Donnelly: “Hi everyone. Just wanted to get in touch with you about some upcoming changes to my UK/EUR tour. I’ve been navigating being back on the road with a degree of difficulty and have made the very hard decision in the best interest in preserving my health to cancel my shows in Liverpool, Nottingham, Birmingham and Hamburg. Implementing breaks in the touring schedule will make this upcoming run more manageable and allow me to deliver the best show possible for the remaining dates. To those affected, I apologise unreservedly. I hope you may be able to make it to another show, otherwise we are looking forward to making it up to you in the new year.
Thank you for your understanding. I can’t wait to see you all!”
Like the many Banded Stilts that spread across the cover of her newest album ‘Flood’, Stella Donnelly is wading into uncharted territory. Here, she finds herself discovering who she is as an artist among the flock, and how abundant one individual can be. Flood is Donnelly’s record of this rediscovery: the product of months of risky experimentation, hard moments of introspection, and a lot of moving around.
Donnelly’s early reflections on the relationship between the individual and the many can be traced back to her time in the rainforests of Bellingen, where she took to birdwatching as both a hobby and an escape in a border-restricted world. By paying closer attention to the natural world around her, Donnelly recalls “I was able to lose that feeling of anyone’s reaction to me. I forgot who I was as a musician, which was a humbling experience of just being; being my small self.” Reconnecting with this ‘small self’ allowed Donnelly to tap into creative wells she didn’t know existed.
Looking back at the Banded Stilt, Donnelly ultimately appreciates how when “seen in a crowd they create an optical illusion, but on its own it’s this singular piece of art.” While each song in Flood is a singular artwork unto itself, the collective shares all of Stella Donnelly in abundance: her inner child, her nurturing self, her nightmare self; all of herself has gone into the making of this record, and although it would take an ocean to fathom everything she feels, it’s well worth diving in.

About Stella Donnelly
Stella Donnelly is the voice of a generation! With a sassy voice and a lyrical attitude that tackles social-political issues, Stella's indie pop-folk melodies cling like paper on glue. They're not your typical hymn, which you can't get out of your head, but it's music that can brighten up anyone's day. Her rapid rise in the music industry is not a coincidence. Her musical aptitudes are beyond imaginable, and her humorous and eccentric personality is undoubtedly reflected in her music. Her album debut, "Beware Of The Dogs" captivated the attention of the music industry. Her critically acclaimed album spurred a tour in North America and across Europe. Playing Glastonbury was the perfect occasion to interpret her newest song, "Political Songstress". The welsh bord, Australian raised singer, is sure to make ripples across the world with her musical statements.

I forgot who I was as a musician, which was a humbling experience of just being; being my small self. ” Reconnecting with this ‘small self’ allowed Donnelly to tap into creative wells she didn’t know existed.
