WSC Group launches TCR World Tour as new global platform

By TouringCarTimes

WSC Group – the entity behind the TCR technical regulations – has announced the launch of a new ‘innovative platform’ for teams and drivers to run alongside its new World Ranking system.

The new TCR World Tour will be made up of nine events selected from various TCR-sanctioned series worldwide, ‘giving priority to the best racetracks and the most popular championships’.

Drivers competing in the World Tour will be awarded ranking points at a greater level than regular competitors in the various races, which are due to be staged on four continents.

The top 15 drivers in the World Tour standings at the end of the season then being invited to compete in the TCR World Ranking Final, which will be organised in co-operation with Discovery Sports Events within the four months following the end of the TCR World Tour.

The event will run over four days to a playoff format, with the 15 drivers from the TCR World Tour being joined by the leading 45 drivers from the TCR World Rankings.

Titles will be awarded to drivers, teams and manufacturers.

“We have had a fruitful co-operation with the FIA and Discovery Sports Events during the latest years and so we respect their decision,” WSC president Marcello Lotti said. “We are now ready to continue working together to provide for the future of touring car competition.

“Since the inception of the TCR concept, WSC has built a large community of competitors. On this basis we are confident that the TCR World Ranking through the TCR World Tour and the TCR World Ranking Final will give teams and drivers the opportunity to keep on competing at a global level.

“At the same time, this plan is set to strengthen the co-operation we have established with the promoters of the regional and national series. This co-operation will make it possible to step up the level of the events selected for the TCR World Tour in terms of visibility, media coverage and atmosphere, also giving the local drivers the opportunity to measure themselves against strong, international participation.

“It is also an opportunity for the manufacturers to establish closer relationships with their own racing customers and increase their loyalty towards the brand.”

Bathurst confirmed on 2023 TCR World Tour calendar

Teddy Clairet, Peugeot Sport GRM, Peugeot 308 TCR

The new 2023 TCR World Tour will feature a round on the iconic Mount Panorama circuit next year, it has been confirmed, with the Bathurst International to feature on the inaugural international calendar.

The announcement means that international touring car racing will feature in Australia for the first time since the 1987 World Touring Car Championship, promising at least 16 international TCR entrants on the grid of next year’s event, alongside the TCR Australia regulars.

WSC President Marcello Lotti is making a visit to the season finale of this year’s TCR Australia series, where the news was revealed on Saturday.

A second round will also be held in Australia, with the circuit to be utilised still to be revealed, with talks between TCR Australia promoter ARG, TCR rights holder WSC and venues ongoing.

Next year’s TCR World Tour will feature nine rounds in total – four in Europe, two in South America, two in Australia and one in Asia.

“When planning the TCR World Tour, it was a natural decision for us to involve the TCR Australia Series and the Bathurst International as part of it,” said WSC President Lotti.

“As soon as I arrived at Mount Panorama this weekend, I realised why this circuit is regarded as one of the best in the world and why all international drivers want to race here.

“I have been for a lap of the track. It is unbelievable, and for me, it was clear that we have made the right decision to confirm that TCR World Tour will race here next year and beyond.

“Having TCR World Tour come to Bathurst will make many of the world’s best TCR drivers dreams come true.

“And the fans will be the winners too, seeing a truely international field of cars racing against the very strong TCR Australia Series teams.”

Liam Curkpatrick, Chief Operating Officer of promoter Australian Racing Group, believes that Bathurst is an ideal venue for the recently-announced World Tour.

“This is an unbelievable endorsement for the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series, having the new TCR World Tour as part of next year’s season,” said Curkpatrick.

“We have not seen an international field of touring cars compete at Mount Panorama in 25 years, so it will really put Bathurst back on the map.

“There is no better place to host TCR World Tour, and we’re looking forward to confirming the details of the second event that will only add to the value for our TCR Australia entrants.”

TCR World Tour confirms round at the 2023 Supercheap Auto Bathurst International

WSC Group president Marcello Lotti has confirmed that TCR World Tour will compete in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst International next year.

Lotti, who has made a special visit to Mount Panorama this weekend, has stated that the famous Bathurst circuit will see a minimum of 16 international TCR entrants on the mountain, competing against all of Australia’s full-time TCR entries.

The worldwide boss of the popular turbocharged category also confirmed that WSC and ARG will host a second round in Australia, with parties in discussions with numerous other circuits about the opportunity to host the second TCR World Tour race in Australia later next year.

The TCR World Tour will debut in 2023, taking in nine rounds at some of the world’s most iconic touring car venues.

The TCR World Tour will visit four continents in 2023, with four rounds in Europe, two in America, one in Asia and two in Australia.

The International TCR drivers and teams will compete alongside national and domestic TCR series, including Australia, pitching the world’s best against the local entrants.

The contracted international and full-time TCR Australia entrants will be ensured a place on the 2023 Bathurst International TCR World Tour races. Depending on agreed grid densities at the circuits, national or international wildcards may be accepted.

Belgian-based Audi team Comtoyou Racing is the first TCR World Tour team confirmed, recently committing to four cars for the new TCR World Tour. The Audi team will be one of at least four different brands that will contest the TCR World Tour.

The inaugural Supercheap Auto Bathurst International is underway at Mount Panorama this weekend, including the final round of the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series.

Honda driver Tony D’Alberto currently leads the title charge ahead of Peugeot’s Jordan Cox and Audi star Will Brown.

The TCR Australia cars will contest three 21 lap races, with the first starting at 4pm AEDT today. Audi driver Jay Hanson will start from pole position.

Marcello Lotti President, WSC Group

“When planning the TCR World Tour, it was a natural decision for us to involve the TCR Australia Series and the Bathurst International as part of it,” said Lotti.

Liam Curkpatrick Chief Operating Officer, Australian Racing Group

“This is an unbelievable endorsement for the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series, having the new TCR World Tour as part of next year’s season,” said Curkpatrick.

“We have not seen an international field of touring cars compete at Mount Panorama in 25 years, so it will really put Bathurst back on the map.

“There is no better place to host TCR World Tour, and we’re looking forward to confirming the details of the second event that will only add to the value for our TCR Australia entrants.”

Seven events will form the 2024 TCR World Tour calendar, with a wider international presence in the second year of the series. Drivers will race against those competing in national and regional TCR series once more and will tackle circuits across Europe, the Americas, Asia and Oceania.

Further information on the 2024 TCR World Tour calendar is not yet available. Details will be provided when there is confirmation.

2023 TCR Europe’s first three events will be part of TCR World Tour

tcr world tour

The first three events of the 2023 TCR Europe series, all on Formula 1 circuits, will be part of the TCR World Tour’s inaugural season.

The cooperation between the WSC Group and the European series will begin in Portugal at Portimão’s Autódromo do Algarve on April 28/30 where both series will begin, will continue in Belgium at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on May 26/28 and will come to an end at Budapest’s Hungaroring on June 16/18.

Marcello Lotti, President of WSC said:  “We are very pleased of this agreement with TCR Europe that rewards the long-standing cooperation between WSC and Paulo Ferreira. The choice of including three events of TCR Europe in the 2023 TCR World Tour was advised by both the appeal of the Formula 1 racetracks and the number of TCR cars based in Europe that will encourage the participation of drivers from overseas. In fact, we wish the TCR World Tour to make a significant impact on Touring Car competition at a global level and in this respect the addition of three iconic circuits like Algarve, Spa and Hungaroring to Bathurst that has been previously announced shows that we are going the right way. Interest in the TCR World Tour is huge from the drivers who aim to climb in the TCR World Ranking and qualify for the TCR World Final.”

TCR Europe’s promoter Paulo Ferreira stated:  “We are extremely proud for this opportunity to be part of this new chapter of global Touring Car competition from its very start. The TCR World Tour is going to strengthen TCR racing even more by fostering relationships between the different series around the world. I am sure that TCR Europe and its stakeholders will benefit greatly from this cooperation.”
