Avril Lavigne Is Back. If You Believe That.

The Canadian singer, with a new album and a tour, this week addressed a bizarre conspiracy theory that she has been replaced with a doppelgänger.

A young woman with long blonde hair raises her hands in the punk rock symbol.

By Claire Moses

Goodbye, online conspiracy theory. Welcome back, Avril Lavigne.

Lavigne — the Canadian singer whose hits like “Sk8er Boi” and “Complicated” made her a mainstay of the early 2000s — appeared on the “ Call Her Daddy” podcast this week to promote a greatest hits album out next month, a new tour and a performance at Glastonbury, Britain’s biggest music festival.

She also used the appearance to tell fans that she is alive and herself.

And that she was most definitely not replaced by a body double named Melissa Vandella after dying more than 20 years ago.

The power of the internet

The bizarre conspiracy theory has popped up occasionally, yet consistently, around the internet for much of Lavigne’s career, and the publicity around her new tour has ignited another round of attention.

Many online explainers have traced its origin to Brazil, and a 2011 blog post that uses Lavigne’s lyrics and photos of her to make an argument that “Melissa” took Lavigne’s place after the success of her debut album “Let Go.”

After a BuzzFeed News report drew attention to the theory , it appeared in mainstream press roundups of conspiracy theories, from the Guardian , to Rolling Stone , to the BBC . It also has its own Wikipedia entry.

For the record: There is no proof for this conspiracy theory.

‘So. Your name is Avril Lavigne.’

On “Call Her Daddy,” hosted by Alex Cooper — herself an icon of the 2020s who said she grew up listening to Lavigne’s music — the singer said she didn’t think the conspiracy theory was that bad in the grand scheme of things.

“I mean, it’s just funny to me,” Lavigne said. “Like, on one end, everyone’s like, You look the exact same. You haven’t aged a day. But then other people are like, you know, there’s a conspiracy theory that I’m not me.”

But, she said, things could be worse.

“I feel like I got a good one,” she said. “I don’t think it’s, like, negative. It’s nothing creepy.”

Cooper replied, “Avril, this conspiracy theory about you is a little creepy, come on.”

Lavigne has not often commented on the conspiracy theory. In 2019, she told Entertainment Weekly that she was “flabbergasted that people bought into it. Isn’t that so weird?”

On the podcast this week, she expressed a similar sentiment.

“Obviously I am me,” she said. “It’s so dumb.”

Paul McCartney was not killed in a car accident in the 1960s. Elvis is definitely dead. But conspiracy theories, however ridiculous, have a way of lodging themselves in people’s subconscious, which helps their staying power in the face of overwhelming proof to the contrary.

Even Cooper couldn’t resist a few follow-up questions.

“Why do you think people think that?” she asked.

“I think that they’ve done that with other artists,” Lavigne answered. “I’m not the only one. I think, like, other people have that.”

Cooper: “I feel like yours is, like, really prominent.”

“Oh, I mean, I feel like you might believe it?” Lavigne said, as both of them barely contained their laughter.

Still, Cooper went for a final fact check: “So. Your name is Avril Lavigne.”

Through more giggles and a confirmation of her identity, Lavigne exclaimed: “I knew you half-believed it!”

A new album, a new tour

While Lavigne is no longer at the extreme heights of her early 2000s fame, her music has endured. The words to “Sk8er Boi” remain permanently etched in the memories of many millennials.

The greatest hits album will be her first since “Love Sux” in 2022. On Thursday night, she debuted the single “Bulletproof” with the country singer Nate Smith at the American Country Music Awards.

Lavigne is not only live and kicking, but she says she is also nowhere near done with her career. On “Call Her Daddy,” she said that besides her coming tour, she was looking forward to branching out creatively and turning “Sk8er Boi” into a movie.

“It’s been so long, it’s been 22 years,” she said, “and I feel like I have another 22 years ahead of me.”

One thing to know about singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne is that she is completely herself. Hailed as the antithesis of the pop stars of her time when she burst onto the scene in 2002, she has always maintained that she makes pop music and loves writing popular songs. She’s fun and doesn’t like to follow rules, but emphatically enjoys long term, monogamous relationships and isn’t afraid to be conventional too. She never let labels tell her what she could and couldn’t wear — and, somehow, Lavigne does it all while making inch thick eyeliner cool.

the avril lavigne tour brazil

Born in Ontario, Canada, Lavigne played in her basement as a kid with a microphone, a drum kit, a keyboard, and several guitars. She had multiple interests growing up, including hockey and skating, the latter of which visually played a role in her career (hint…does the name “Sk8er Boi” ring a bell?). After signing to Arista Records in 2000, Lavigne has clocked worldwide sales of 40 million albums and 50 million singles, six number-one singles worldwide, has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards, and is ranked as the third top-selling Canadian female artist in history.

With a career that has soundtracked millions of lives, Lavigne has embarked on her celebratory Greatest Hits Tour at venues all across North America, including a sold out show at the Kia Forum on May 30. Her home away from home, Lavigne mentioned at the show, “when I was 16, I moved to L.A. This feels like home to me now too.”

The lights dimmed and her signature red star was drawn on screen, as well as images that encapsulate the eras of her other albums. All of Lavigne’s album covers then flashed on the screens, and a few clips of her when she was a teenager played as the crowd lost their mind. Finally, “AVRIL LAVIGNE” block letters flashed on stage as she walked out to “Girlfriend,” from 2007 and one of her biggest songs to date.

Lavigne pumped her fist into the air and strutted around haughtily as she sang, “hey! You! I don’t like your girlfriend! I think you need a new one…I could be your girlfriend…She’s like so whatever, you could do so much better.” It’s unabashed, and Lavigne still owned it all these years later with the same chutzpah as if she were taunting the guy now.

Next was the one-two punch of “What The Hell” and “Complicated,” two of her biggest smash hits. “What The Hell” is pure catchy perfection, with one of the most addictive chorus melodies I’ve ever heard: “All my life I’ve been good. but now, I’m thinking ‘what the hell?’” Lavigne sang. She hit an incredible run toward the end of the song, showcasing a part of Lavigne’s voice that isn’t often heard in her studio recordings. Not often known for her vocals, Lavigne showed she is an incredible, acrobatic vocalist, and incorporated alternate melodic choices into songs where she saw fit.

the avril lavigne tour brazil

“Complicated” was a fan favorite and the crowd screamed every word. Lavigne even showed off her electric guitar playing skills during “Losing Grip,” as she and the band slowly fed off of each other’s energy until they clashed in harmony at the huge climax of the song. Highlights “ My Happy Ending ,” “ I’m With You ,” and “ Sk8er Boi ” lit up the energy in the venue in a palpable manner; you could see thousands of fans in the periphery start dancing extra emphatically during their favorites, and could even hear fans saying, “I can’t believe I’m hearing her play this” during older songs.

As Lavigne looked out into the audience near the end of the show, she appeared filled with genuine gratitude and emotion. She explained how she is aware that selling out a venue like the Kia Forum is incredibly hard to do, much less doing so repeatedly over the course of her career. She doesn’t shy away from showing appreciation for her older tunes, as she gleefully sighed, “I can’t believe I’m doing a greatest hits tour…thanks so much for coming out…today was a perfect night.”

There was a brief moment when Lavigne walked backstage and a video started to play, showing various clips of her as a teenager being interviewed. She was shown expressing how shocked she was at selling thousands of copies of her album (with her signature slightly apathetic, but very intentional and thoughtful voice), sticking her tongue out, and playing on TV programs. Presenters marveled at Lavigne, expressing how her name will be known around the world.

In hindsight, it’s notable to see it truly has.

Derrick Rossignol

Avril Lavigne has quite the library of hits, featuring “Complicated,” “Sk8er Boi,” “I’m With You,” “Happy Ending,” and “Girlfriend.” Well, we’re now about a week into Lavigne’s The Greatest Hits Tour and those songs and others have made it into the setlist so far. If you’re heading to an upcoming concert, here’s a look at what you can expect.

Looking at her latest concert — on May 26 at RV Inn Style Resorts Amphitheaterin Ridgefield, Washington, via setlist.fm — Lavigne played all the aforementioned hits, opening with “Girlfriend,” closing the main set with “Sk8er Boi,” and going with “Head Above Water” and “I’m With You” for the encore.

All Time Low also joined Lavigne for their Lavigne collaboration “Fake As Hell.” Guests like this are often a one-off thing when both artists happened to be in the same city at the same time, but All Time Low is one of Lavigne’s openers on this tour, and they’ve joined her to play the song on ever Greatest Hits Tour date so far.

Check out the Ridgefield setlist below.

It's clear things are not too complicated between Avril Lavigne and her ex-husband, Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley.

Instead, nearly 15 years after they called it quits, they seem to be quite friendly! The two took fans by surprise when Lavigne introduced Whibley onto the stage during her Las Vegas show for her current Greatest Hits Tour before performing his band's beloved 2001 track, "In Too Deep."

After singing together, the former husband and wife hugged after Lavigne urged the crowd to "make some f**king noise" for the musician.

Many fans were thrilled to see the exes unexpectedly reunite. "That was a great surprise, congrats Avril and Derick for this performance," an Instagram comment read.

Added another fan, "I love how they're still on good terms and friends even though they're not married anymore."

"Woowwwww one stage with ex husband. You're Such a cool person! I dont think I can be like her🤣," a fan complimented.

Lavigne, 39, and Whibley, 44, tied the knot in 2006, three years before the Canadian songstress announced their split. "I am grateful for our time together, and I am grateful and blessed for our remaining friendship," she said in a statement on her website at the time. In 2015, Whibley married Ariana Cooper, with whom he shares two kids. Sum 41 announced in 2023 that they would be disbanding after releasing their final album, Heaven :x: Hell , and going on tour for the last time .

Lavigne wed a second time in 2013 to Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger. They announced their separation two years later.

Nowadays, the longtime performer is on the road amid her Greatest Hits Tour, where fans can expect to hear, well, all of her greatest hits. "The whole set list is singles, which to be honest, that's a place that I strived to be at, especially on my first album because I only had, like, three singles," she previously told ET . "From day one, I wanted to be able to have my whole show to be all singles and now I have that and I'm very proud of that."

Avril Lavigne reunites with ex-husband Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 on stage in Las Vegas

Avril Lavigne answered the age-old question, “Can exes be friends?” over the weekend when she invited her ex-husband, Sum 41 ’s Deryck Whibley, to the stage at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Listen to Avril Lavigne Radio and more on the free Audacy app

Lavigne is currently on tour promoting the upcoming release of the singer-songwriter’s greatest hits album, which will be dropping June 21. Fans attending Saturday’s show expected to be treated with Lavigne’s Pop Punk anthems, such as “Girlfriend,” and “Complicated,” but they weren’t expecting a duet of Sum 41’s “In Too Deep” with Whibley.

“Tonight we have a special guest, and he plays guitar in one of my favorite bands, and your favorite bands,” Lavigne said as she welcomed Whibley to the stage.

After dating for a couple of years, Whibley proposed to Lavigne in 2005, and the pair tied the knot a year later in California. However, in 2009, Lavigne filed for divorce from the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of Sum 41. “I am grateful for our time together, and I am grateful and blessed for our remaining friendship,” Lavigne wrote on her website at the time of the couple’s separation.

Lavigne and Whibley’s reunion at the “Sk8er Boi” singer’s recent show proved how their friendship has endured 15 years since their split. The two seem to be supportive of their respective careers, which like their friendship, are still going strong.

Following Lavigne’s performance in Las Vegas, she will be heading overseas to Europe, playing shows from Czechia to Spain. She will then make her return to North America, first stopping for performances in her home and native land of Canada before continuing the tour throughout the United States.

Whibley and Sum 41 are on the road as well for their farewell tour in celebration of the band’s eighth and final album, Heaven :x: Hell, which dropped in March. While dreaded F-words such as “farewell” and “final” are being used to describe Sum 41, musicians are constantly coming out of retirement, so fans can always hold on to a glimmer of hope.

Even if Sum 41 won’t be done for good, fans still shouldn’t miss upcoming opportunities to see the Pop Punk band this year. There’s even a possibility Whibley could take the stage with Lavigne yet again because both artists will be featured at the Rock For People festival in Czechia coming up on June 14.

Avril Lavigne & Ex-Husband Deryck Whibley Reunite On Stage During Las Vegas Concert

The "Complicated" singer brought out the Sum 41 frontman to perform his own classic song during her "Greatest Hits" tour during a stop in Las Vegas.

The When We Were Young festival isn’t for another four months, but Las Vegas became a pop-punk haven during  Avril Lavigne’s concert at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday, June 1. The “Girlfriend” singer, 39, brought out her ex-husband  Deryck Whibley , 44, for a surprise performance of Sum 41’s hit “In Too Deep” as part of the concert.

Avril brought out the Sum 41 singer-guitarist near the end of her main set. She teased that she had a surprise in store for the audience before he came out. “Okay, Vegas. I’ve got a little surprise for you guys, tonight. Tonight, we have a special guest, and he plays guitar in one of my favorite bands and your favorite bands. Deryck ran out with a gold Les Paul guitar, as he greeted the crowd. “Thank you for letting me crash this party tonight,” he said. “One question: where’s all the crazy m**********rs here tonight? Alright, this song is called ‘In Too Deep.'”

The band then performed Sum 41’s  All Killer No Filler  single as a duet between Avril and Deryck. The rocker wasn’t the only pop-punk icon who joined Avril on stage that night. All Time Low have been opening for the  Love Sux  singer on this tour, and they’ve been joining her to perform their song “Fake as Hell.”

Avril began dating Deryck when she was 19, and the pair tied the knot in July 2006, but she filed for divorce in October 2009. Their split was finalized the following year. Despite their divorce, it’s clear that they’ve remained on good terms, as Deryck worked with her on the 2011 album  Goodbye Lullaby .

After their divorce, Avril began dating Nickelback frontman  Chad Kroeger , and they got married in 2013, but they divorced two years later. In April 2022, Avril got engaged to pop-punk up-and-coming artist  Mod Sun , but they split up in February 2023. Deryck married his wife  Ariana Cooper  in 2015.

Things To Do

Review: avril lavigne kicks off 2024 shoreline season in uncomplicated fashion, avril lavigne draws huge crowd to mountain view venue.

the avril lavigne tour brazil

It can be straightforward, direct and, alternately, fun and poignant. It can be like overhearing a conversation from the teen next door who is going through some life situations and simply trying to figure things out.

It can be Avril Lavigne.

Thus who scoff at that notion certainly weren’t at the opening night concert of the 2024 Shoreline Amphitheatre season, when Lavigne drew a huge crowd of mostly 30- and 40-somethings who grew up on her songs and who still deeply adore her music.

Not only adore, but clearly feel like her music still speaks to them.

That could be seen — and heard — throughout this delightful Mountain View stop on Lavigne’s Greatest Hits Tour, as thousands sang along with passion and purpose to one likeable number after another. Yet, the moment that really crystalized the whole view came when the singer unleashed the massive 2002 smash “Complicated” and fans got behind every single word like their were belting out the anthem to their lives.

the avril lavigne tour brazil

Although it’s been more than a decade since Lavigne had a Top 20 song in the U.S. (“Here’s to Never Growing Up” in 2013), the Canadian star’s continued influence on pop culture should not be denied.

She rose out of a small city in Ontario in 2002 with the full-length debut “Let’s Go” — built from a batch of songs she’d penned as a 16-year old — and proceeded to conquer the world with one bouncy fun tune after another.

She was peddling a radio-friendly pop-punk sound — with a heavy emphasis on the pop — and presenting a down-to-earth young skater-like image that stood in direct contrast to what was being portrayed by the so-called pop princesses of the era. Some labeled her “the anti-Britney,” although Lavigne rejected that title. In all, it’s hard to imagine what the inventory of such teen-focused mall shops like Hot Topic would look like today without Lavigne’s mighty influence.

The testament to that lasting influence came with Tuesday’s giant turnout, which filled up all the seats as well as much of the massive lawn area at Shoreline. (The only unofficial attendance figure I heard was in the 13,000 range, although the crowd felt even bigger.)

Of course, it’s been a long time since Avril was a 17-year-old star sitting on top of the charts — and the world — with her debut album. And she seems perfectly OK with that.

“I’m 39 — 39 and living my best life,” Lavigne said.

That definitely appeared to be the case during this roughly 90-minute Shoreline show, which kicked off with a high-energy version of “Girlfriend” (from 2007’s “The Best Damn Thing”) and quickly continued through “What the Hell,” “Complicated” and “Smile.”

Lavigne’s vocals were as strong as ever — benefitting from the Mountain View stop coming early on in this Greatest Hits tour — as she led the crowd in sing-alongs of “My Happy Ending,” “He Wasn’t” and “Don’t Tell Me.”

She’d touch upon all seven of her studio albums — including the most recent offering, 2022’s “Love Sux” — during the 17-song set. Yet — befitting the Greatest Hits Tour moniker — the show drew most strongly from the early blockbuster albums, “Let’s Go” and “Under My Skin,” both of which have been certified multiplatinum.

It was unfussy pop-punk pretty much from start to finish, with a bit of straightforward rock (particularly on “He Wasn’t”), without much in the way of special effects or production elements to sell it. Mainly, it was just Lavigne singing and chatting to the crowd, backed by a solid five-piece band.

One of the more fun moments came when she called out Alex Gaskarth and Jack Barakat — from one of the evening’s opening acts, All Time Low — to perform with her onstage. They’d rip through “Fake as Hell,” the collaboration with Lavigne featured on All Time Low’s 2023 album, “Tell Me I’m Alive.”

After that All Time Low highlight, Lavigne kept the party right on rolling along as such closed up the main set with such favorites as “Love It When You Hate Me” and “Sk8er Boi,” before returning to finish out the night with a two-song encore of “Head Above Water” and “I’m With You.”

Avril Lavigne Joins Ex-Husband Deryck Whibley Onstage For Sum 41 Duet in Las Vegas

Water under the bridge for Avril Lavigne and her ex-husband Deryck Whibley .

Lavigne, 39, joined Sum 41’s Whibley, 44, on stage at the MGM Grand Garden Arena to perform a duet of his band’s “In Too Deep” on Saturday, June 1, in Las Vegas.

“Tonight we have a special guest, and he plays guitar in one of my favorite bands, and your favorite bands,” Lavigne said before the song, per Kerrang!

She added: “Ladies and gentlemen, please give it up for Deryck from Sum 41!”

Lavigne, who is currently touring North America and Canada for her Greatest Hits tour from May through September, was married to the rockstar from 2006 to 2010. Although their marriage didn’t last, the two collaborated on Lavigne’s 2011 album Goodbye Lullaby . Lavigne went on to marry Chad Kroeger in 2013 before the former couple split in 2015. Whibley tied the knot with current wife Ariana Cooper in 2015.

Last month, the “Complicated” singer said she is “f–king awesome” in a relationship on the  “Call Her Daddy” podcast when asked about her romantic life.

“Are you seeing anyone right now?” host Alex Cooper asked Lavigne, who stayed silent. “Now I know even if you were, you’re never gonna f–king tell me. Maybe? OK.”

The singer then opened up about her ideal partner. “I think the most important thing is finding someone that you’re compatible with, because you could be two different great people. But if you’re not compatible, you’re not going to get along,” Lavigne said. “It all just sounds cliché. Someone that is trustworthy, because if you don’t have that, you’re just never going to feel grounded in the relationship, and you’re going to be spinning. So that’s just not healthy.”

“Avril and Tyga broke up a while ago,” an insider exclusively told Us Weekly in October 2023. “There was nothing specific that happened, their relationship had simply run its course.”

Another source told Us that there was “no bad blood between them whatsoever,” adding that “it was a clean breakup” and they “haven’t spoken since because of their busy schedules.”

That March, a source exclusively told Us that the twosome “never imagined a romance would happen and this was totally unexpected,” adding, “They have no idea where things are going but they’re enjoying spending time together. They have great chemistry.”
