Positive Messages

The movie has a strong message of sacrifice and duty in relation to navy careers, which translates to the younger characters learning to take responsibility and put others first. Compassion, understanding, and self-acceptance are also themes. There is a strong pro-U.S. message in the wake of 9/11 that sometimes feels a bit heavy-handed.

Positive Role Models

Maddie initially acts selfishly and petulantly in many ways, but gradually takes on a role of support and responsibility, displaying strength and intelligence in difficult situations. She consistently shows care and concern for others. The positive sides of her behavior are reflected in her father, Gary, who is commander on the ship, and shows responsibility but also kindness toward his crew.

Diverse Representations

While the main family is White, other races are represented within the friendship group onboard -- with the central trio including a Black and Hispanic character, who each have individual stories and share their experiences. But the Black character adheres to some negative stereotypes, using cliched language such as "whack" and showing a tendency to disobey rules. Supporting characters in the crew feature some diversity, with Black, Latina and also female representation among the Navy officers. There is little diversity in body type, and the one larger character is seen to be unhealthy and becomes the object of ridicule when they get stuck in a hole.

Did we miss something on diversity? Suggest an update.

Violence & Scariness

There is some footage of planes flying into the Twin Towers on 9/11, and sections of news reports that mention casualties, hijacking, missing people, and dangerous rescues. Onboard the ship, an emergency alarm goes off causing fear and confusion. A character is blown over the edge of the ship, but lands safely in a net. There is mention of Pearl Harbor and the deaths involved, as well as passing reference to bombs, guns, and ammunition. A relative is reported missing, presumed dead.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Tiger Cruise is a Disney TV movie family drama about a teen who joins her father onboard his naval ship, during which 9/11 takes place. The film stars Hayden Panettiere as Maddie and Bill Pullman as her father, Commander Gary Dolan. When the events of 9/11 occur, some footage is shown of the Twin Towers. Characters subsequently experience fear and concern for family and friends, with a relative based at the Pentagon reported missing, presumed dead. Following these events, Maddie shows courage and empathy in stepping up and taking the lead from her father to care for the civilians onboard the ship, while he manages the naval officers. The film also touches upon the affect naval life has upon kids, with Maddie mentioning moving schools and missing her father. The movie is suitable for most of the family, though very young viewers or those who continue to be strongly affected by the events of 9/11 may find it upsetting. Tiger Cruise Movie: Scene #1

What's the Story?

In TIGER CRUISE, Maddie Dolan ( Hayden Panettiere ) agrees to join a group of other civilians aboard a navy ship, where her father, Gary ( Bill Pullman ), is commander. Resenting his time away from the family, she plans to talk him into coming home, but when news of the 9/11 attacks reaches the vessel, everything changes. Maddie begins to understand the huge responsibility her father bears, and is inspired to step up and do her duty to help.

Is It Any Good?

In a role that very much plays to her strengths, Panettiere is a likable lead in this Disney family drama. Throughout the course of Tiger Cruise, she moves from petulant teen to protective big sister to determined group leader naturally, and has strong chemistry with the other young actors. Scenes between Panettiere's Maddie and friends Tina and Anthony have a warm sense of mischief and fun, though an impromptu musical interlude in the kitchen feels a little forced and out of place in a film that is, for the most part, relatively realistic. Pullman's naval commander strikes a good balance between strictness and kindness -- always punctuated with a heroic glow.

The mirroring between the commander's duty onboard the ship and Maddie's role among the civilians is handled with some subtlety and nuance. And the stories that emerge from other passengers onboard go some way to exploring the affects of 9/11 across the country, without going into detail that could scare or upset younger viewers. The patriotism feels a little heavy handed at times, particularly toward the end of the movie, with plenty of talk about duty and protecting the country, and a wistful scene involving the unveiling of an enormous U.S. flag. But overall, Tiger Cruise is an enjoyable family drama that takes on a serious topic with mixed results, but plenty of heart.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about how Tiger Cruise handled the events of 9/11. Did it do sensitively? How did the events impact those onboard the ship? How does 9/11 continue to impact our own lives today?

Discuss how Maddie's role among the civilians on the ship mirrored her father's role in the Navy. What did Maddie learn about her father and herself by the end of the movie?

Talk about how the friends Maddie meets onboard, and their experiences and family ties, shed further light on navy life. Do you think it's a realistic portrayal of what being in the Navy, or having a family member in the Navy, is like?

Tiger cruise.

Directed by Duwayne Dunham

Maddie wanted a father. What she found was a hero.

On its last leg homeward, from Pearl Harbour (Hawaii) to San Diego, the USS Constellation hosts a jolly 'tiger cruise' for USNavy, Marines and USNAF relatives, mainly minors ('Navy brats'). Attitudes and emotions vary from simple joy to open frustration, the worst brat being XO commander Gary Dolan's daughter Maddie, who wants him to refuse a promotion to command for a shore job. Then the news of the WCC terror crisis changes everything, as the crew is recalled to war footing.

Extraordinarily boring propaganda, but as only Bush era Disney Channel could provide. Loads of highly questionable green screen. A bizarre cathartic STOMP routine in a kitchen. At its heart is a girl wanting her dad to come home from sea.... BUT THEN 9/11 HAPPENS. It ends hilariously with the children unfurling and becoming galvanized by a giant American flag. They all now know what proudly must be done. Real junior Starship Troopers shit.

Hindsight is the enemy of nostalgia.

At 27, I'm probably at the absolutely lower limit of people who actually remember 9/11. To even say I "remember" it using the term loosely. I don't remember any of the actual events. I certainly don't remember seeing news footage. I don't have any recollection of a parent crying. I know for sure that we didn't go home early from school, but I know that because i can put into context the memories of the rest of my family: my little brother - who is 3 years younger than me and had just started kindergarten - remembers 9/11 as the day he lost his first tooth, and waiting all day to come home and…

Review movie Tiger Cruise

During its final journey from Pearl Harbour in Hawaii to San Diego, the USS Constellation welcomes a cheerful 'tiger cruise' for the relatives of the US Navy, Marines, and USNAF, primarily children known as 'Navy brats'. Feelings range from pure delight to outright irritation, with the most troublesome child being Maddie, the daughter of XO commander Gary Dolan, who urges him to decline a leadership promotion in favor of a land-based job. However, the announcement of the WCC terror crisis alters everything, as the crew is summoned back to battle readiness.

FOR YOUNG VIEWERS; On a Family Cruise With the Kids, A Carrier Goes on Battle Alert

By Kathryn Shattuck

  • Aug. 1, 2004

ON Sept. 9, 2001, the aircraft carrier Constellation set sail on Operation Tiger, an annual Navy tradition in which civilians and family members are given permission to board a ship for a weeklong tour of operations. Two days later, as the ship sailed the South Pacific from Hawaii to San Diego, hijacked planes flew into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and the nation went on high alert. For the first time in modern naval history, a ship went into full combat mode with hundreds of civilians, including children, on board.

''Tiger Cruise,'' a Disney Channel movie to have its premiere on Friday at 8 p.m., recounts these harrowing events through the perspectives of several civilians, or Tigers, on board. But at its heart lies the story of a Navy commander, portrayed by Bill Pullman, and his young daughter, played by Hayden Panettiere, who, frustrated by the military life that takes her father away from her for months at a time, boards his ship with the intention of persuading him to come home -- until his heroic actions in the face of tragedy help her understand what his commitment really means.

Disney Channel is encouraging parents to watch the film, set against the background of Sept. 11, with their children and has set up guidelines for family discussions of the topic at www.disneychannel.com.

''Tiger Cruise'' melds film shot aboard an actual Tiger cruise on the Nimitz, which set sail from Pearl Harbor on Oct. 31, with footage of the movie's actors in San Diego on the John C. Stennis, a 95-ton, nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that stands 17 stories high and spans three and a half football fields.

As part of his preparation for the part of the ship's commander, Mr. Pullman accompanied Capt. David Buss, the commander of the Stennis, as he gave an introduction to about 100 new sailors.

''I had to do a 180 about my impression of what it is to be part of the military service for this country,'' Mr. Pullman said. ''They're taking a lot of very young people, and some of them are coming to the services looking for some way to shape their lives. And the Navy has a priority to make the ship battle-ready. But the second priority is to find out what the sailors' priorities are. They all carry an index card with their life goals, and at any time anyone can ask to see the card. It gives them a sense of enlightenment, I guess, about what the choice is.''

For Ms. Panettiere, 14, the story served as a sobering reminder of sacrifices made nearer to home. ''My father was a lieutenant in the New York City Fire Department, and he retired only six months before 9/11,'' she said.

''So the event was pretty close to my heart. He used to be a floater at firehouses throughout the city, and I think he knew every single fireman that died. I grew up with a lot of the guys.''

Still, that heartache did not necessarily make the role of a self-centered teenager whose eyes are suddenly opened wide any easier to play. ''You know, I decided that I had to make it obvious that it was a traumatic experience, and so I cried,'' she went on. ''But I don't think I've ever cried about 9/11. Because I've had trouble grasping the idea that people are capable of doing something like that.'' Kathryn Shattuck

Disney Channel breaks rank with its latest original movie “Tiger Cruise,” an affecting tale of teen angst and turmoil set amid the backdrop of 9/11. Pic still carries many Disney hallmarks — a burgeoning teen-queen star, a catchy theme song and predictable subplots, but marks a departure from the net’s usual fairytale formula.

Writers Anna Sandor and Bruce Graham deserve kudos for filtering a tough story through the eyes of kids without diluting the message. Based on real events, “Tiger Cruise” never feels exploitative or opportunistic. And director Duwayne Dunham is careful to distinguish between solemn and maudlin, serious and sentimental.

The result is a respectful, cathartic story, especially for those kids unable to articulate their feelings about the terrorist attacks. It’s a bold move for Disney, which has made ratings hay with feel-good teen romps. It should be interesting to see how young fans treat the more serious side of the Mouse.

Popular on Variety

Film is based loosely on the true story of the Navy aircraft carrier U.S.S. Constellation, which made naval history for being the first ship to go on full combat alert with hundreds of civilians aboard — many of them kids — when the twin towers and Pentagon were attacked.

“Remember the Titan’s” Hayden Panettiere stars as Maddie Dolan, a teenager who cringes at being called a Navy brat, despite the high-ranking position her father, Commander Gary Dolan (the ever stalwart Bill Pullman), has aboard the Constellation.

For a long time, Maddie has resisted joining in the military tradition of the Tiger Cruise, a program that allows families to join their loved ones on a weeklong tour of operations. But Maddie has a plan to convince her dad to quit the military for good. Sick of moving frequently and spending long stretches without him, Maddie unleashes all of her pent-up teen angst on dad.

Maddie is befriended on the cruise by Tina Torres (Bianca Collins), a chatty Latino teen who idolizes her pilot sister, and the surly Anthony (Nathaniel Lee Jr.), a street-wise New Yorker indifferent to his jet mechanic brother and to life in general.

As tensions between Maddie and her father come to a head, Commander Dolan succumbs to what seems more like emotional blackmail than an honest plea for family unity; he tells Maddie he won’t re-enlist.

But two days into what was a carefree cruise from Hawaii to San Diego, the fun and frivolity soon turns to fear and alarm. As news comes in on the morning of Sept. 11, the ship is put on full alert. Suddenly, all the doors that were open to visitors are slamming shut and the civilians have been herded below deck to watch the disturbing news.

With more than 800 civilians onboard, the ship is in a holding pattern until further instructions from operation command. Commander Dolan comes up with a plan to get everyone home safely. For the first time, Maddie finally understands why her father’s commitment and sacrifice is so important.

It’s a story that needs little embellishment, and Dunham is careful to sidestep too many details regarding the attacks. Images of the smoking towers are brief but effective. This selective tactic works for the story, deftly illustrating the lack of information and feelings of helplessness in those first confusing hours.

The initial all-access romp onboard and Maddie’s casual disregard for ship’s rules reflects the naivete surrounding freedoms and security that most in our country enjoyed without thought before the attacks. Later in the film, as the civilians eventually disembark, Maddie notices the difference, as armed guards are stationed around the base. “It’s like we’ve landed in an enemy port,” she observes. The world changed that day, and it would be a disservice to assume kids didn’t feel the change too.

Pullman seems born to play the stiff parental-authority figure who’s just soft enough to crack under pressure from a big pair of sad eyes. It’s hard to say whether the role is a step down for the theatrical star, or a big boost for the Disney TV movie franchise.

The same is true of Panettiere, who has enough acting chops to keep the film from wavering into sentimentality. She gives the pic heart, and in true Disney star form, also provides the vocals for the theme song, “My Hero Is You,” written by Jamie Houston.

Unfortunately, neither of the two stars gets any support from other actors, who, stuck in stereotyped roles appear awkward.

Special effects were rough, but, thankfully, few were needed, since the movie was realistically filmed aboard the U.S.S. John C. Stennis and the U.S.S. Nimitz.

The 2 Western Movies John Wayne Thought Were Better Than His 67-Year-Old Masterpiece

Harry potter tv remake can finally do justice to a key character from the books (that the movies quickly forgot about), the judge ending explained.

The cast of the upcoming Disney movie  Jungle Cruise  is stacked with A-listers and new faces playing a variety of eccentric characters. The family film is based on the iconic Disney World theme park attraction of the same name. Jungle Cruise also makes use of another iconic Disney World item—the Tree of Life, which sits in Animal Kingdom. The titular cruise is the central focus of the family-friend action-adventure movie.

Set in the 20th century, the film follows riverboat captain Frank, scientist Dr. Lily Houghton, and her brother and assistant McGregor as they journey into the jungle in order to find the Tree of Life. As it's believed to have healing properties, Lily hopes to study its properties to benefit modern medicine. The group has to fight wild animals, a dangerous environment, and competitors to get to the tree first.  Jungle Cruise  chronicles the trio fighting through all these obstacles to get to the Tree of Life and find what they're looking for.

From familiar faces to new ones, here's a look at every character in  Jungle Cruise , who plays them, and what other films and TV shows the cast has previously starred in. Let's take a look.

Dwyane Johnson As Frank Wolff

Frank is a sharp yet cynical steamboat captain. He reluctantly agrees to take Lily and McGregor on the river and gets roped into their quest to find the Tree of Life. He once believed in the Tree of Life's powers and searched for it for years. But years of failure forced him to give up on that dream. Frank is played by wrestler-turned-actor Dwyane Johnson. Johnson is a familiar face to Blockbuster movies. He's appeared in the  Jumanji sequel series as Spencer,  Moana as Maui , and  G.I. Joe: Retaliation  as Roadblock. Johnson's experience with action movies and family-friendly films makes him the perfect fit for  Jungle Cruise .

Emily Blunt As Lily Houghton

Emily Blunt stars as eccentric scientist Dr. Lily Houghton. Her character is incredibly adventurous, making her the perfect complement to Johnson's Frank Wolff. Her desire to find the Tree of Life is the driving force behind the movie's plot. Lily hopes to use its healing properties to help other people. Blunt is known for her roles in movies such as the  A Quiet Plac e franchise,  The Devil Wears Prada , and  The Edge of Tomorrow.  She's no stranger to Disney after starring as Mary Poppins in  Mary Poppins Returns .

Edgar Ramirez As Aguirre

Aguirre is the mercenary hired to deter Lily's expedition to find the Tree of Life. His presence acts as one of the main conflicts in  Jungle Cruise , so audiences can likely expect him to come to blows with Frank, Lily, and McGregor during a vital moment in the Disney movie. He's played by Edgar Ramirez, who might be recognized from roles in movies such as  Gold ,  Point Break , and  Deliver Us From Evil .

Jack Whitehall As McGregor Houghton

Jack Whitehall plays McGregor Houghton. He is Lily's younger brother, whom she forces to be her scientific assistant. Audiences may recognize Whitehall from his prosperous stand-up comedy career. With that in mind, he will likely act as the comedic relief for many scenes in Jungle Cruise . Whitehall has also appeared in  Bad Education, Mother's Day , and  Good Omens, which was renewed for season 2 .

Jesse Plemons As Prince Joachim

Prince Joachim is the eccentric and wealthy German aristocrat who is financing and leading a military expedition so he may claim the Tree of Life for himself. He is likely one of the film's main villains. Emmy-nominated actor Jesse Plemons plays Prince Joachim. He is best known for his role as Landry in  Friday Night Lights , which was his big break-out role. Plemons has also appeared in  I'm Thinking of Ending Things, Breaking Bad , and an episode of  Black Mirror .

Paul Giamatti As Nilo

Nilo is the harbormaster at the port where Frank docks his boat. Nilo is played by the Academy Award-nominated actor Paul Giamatti, who was nominated for his work in the 2005 dramatic film  Cinderella Man . He's also appeared in films such as  Sideways  and Steve McQueen's  12 Years a Slave .  With his numerous award nominations and wins, Giamatti is likely the most critically acclaimed actor in the entire cast of  Jungle Cruise .

Jungle Cruise Supporting Cast

Andy Nyman as Sir James Hobbs-Coddington:  Sir James Hobbs-Coddington is one of the many people in Jungle Cruise  wrapped up in the search for the Tree of Life's flower. He's played by Andy Nyman, who has appeared in  Judy and  Death at a Funeral .

Quim Gutierrez as  Melchor: The  Jungle Cruise character Melchor is involved in the search for the Tree of Life as well. Melchor is played by Quim Gutierrez. Audiences may recognize Gutierrez from roles such as Jorge in  Blue Almost Black and  Marc in  The Last Days .

Simone Lockhart as Anna:  Anna is a young woman who is among the people involved in the search for the Tree of Life. The character is played by actress Simone Lockhart. As she was only 16 years old at the time of  Jungle Cruise 's release, she is still a relative newcomer to Hollywood. She is likely best known for her role as Nellie in  Sweet Magnolias .

Dani Rovira as Sancho:  Sancho, played by Dani Rovira, is another person wrapped up in the search for the Tree of Life in  Jungle Cruise as well. Audiences may recognize Rovira from his roles as Rafa in  Spanish Affair  and León in  Taxi to Treasure Rock.

Veronica Falcón as Trader Sam:  Trader Sam is a character lifted directly from the Disney World attraction. He was thought to have an extended lifespan and supposedly ran a pub frequented by pirates, including Captain Jack Sparrow. Disney fleshes out his story beyond that, which enables them to place him in multiple attractions. But in the Jungle Cruise ride, he runs Trader Sam's Gift Shop near the end of the ride. As Trader Sam is played by Veronica Falcón , the movie gender-swaps the character. Audiences may recognize Falcón from roles such as Catherine in  Why Women Kill and Lupe in  Perry Mason .

Emily Blunt has kissed some princes, but as it turns out, there have also been some frogs.

During an April 30 visit to “The Howard Stern Show,” Blunt, 41, revealed: “I’ve had chemistry with people I haven’t liked.”

Howard Stern, 70, asked her, “Who?” to which she replied: “I’m not gonna tell you.”

“Have you wanted to throw up?” Stern asked Blunt about kissing a fellow actor on-screen.

“Absolutely. Absolutely,” she answered.

She added, “I wouldn’t say it’s sort of extreme loathing, but I’ve definitely not enjoyed some of it.”

Emily Blunt.

Similar to when “Dune” and “Mission: Impossible” star Rebecca Ferguson talked about a colleague yelling at her, Blunt has dropped this bomb without naming names, but there are clues on who it could be.

Benicio Del Toro.

Benicio Del Toro

Blunt worked with Del Toro, 57, on the 2010 reboot of the classic monster movie “The Wolfman.” Blunt played his love interest, Gwen, and the two shared an on-screen smooch.

However, one factor that might eliminate the Puerto Rican actor is that Blunt went on to do 2015’s  “Sicario” with him — if he had made her want to “throw up” from a kiss, she might not have worked with him again.

Matt Damon smiling.

Matt Damon

Damon, 53, and Blunt played star-crossed lovers in the 2011 sci-fi romantic action movie, “The Adjustment Bureau.” However, the two have since starred in “Oppenheimer” together, and they have done a slew of friendly interviews where they’ve argued about food .

So, unless Blunt is a great actor who is pretending to be friendly to him in interviews — which is possible, as she is an Oscar-nominated actress — that makes Damon seem unlikely.

Jason Segel sharing a kiss with Emily Blunt in "The Five Year Engagement."

Jason Segel

Blunt co-starred with Segel, 44, in 2012’s “The Five-Year Engagement,” where they played a couple whose relationship got strained as their engagement dragged on. At the time that the movie came out, Blunt gave an entire interview about it to British Vogue where she didn’t mention Segel, making him a contender.

However, in another interview with Cinemablend , she praised the “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” star, calling him “a romantic” and the working experience “collaborative.” She also said that certain scenes were “so much fun to shoot.”

Dwayne Johnson smiling.

Dwayne Johnson

Blunt worked with Johnson, 52, on 2021’s “Jungle Cruise.” However, during her Howard Stern appearance, Blunt said about Johnson , “I love him,” and said she’s going to work with him again, on a film called “The Smashing Machine.” So, that makes the former wrestler turned actor an unlikely contender.

Ryan Gosling.

Ryan Gosling

Blunt currently stars in “The Fall Guy” opposite Gosling, 43, now in theaters. The two previously demonstrated their on-screen chemistry at the 2024 Oscars, where they traded banter about the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon.

Blunt told Entertainment Weekly about their on-screen romance, “We wanted to approach it in a really free-wheeling way that felt grounded.”

Blunt further told Stern on his show, “I love his wife, Eva [Mendes]. I love their children, and I feel like I’m very lucky to be friends with a gem of a person like him.”

Cillian Murphy with Emily Blunt in "Oppenheimer."

Cillian Murphy

Blunt starred with this year’s Best Actor Oscar winner Murphy, 47, in “Oppenheimer,” where she played J. Robert Oppenheimer’s long-suffering (and cuckolded) wife. In previous interviews , Blunt has referred to Murphy as “my friend,” and she told Rolling Stone, “I mean, I could talk about Cillian all day long; I absolutely adore him.”

It’s unlikely that Murphy is one of her bad on-screen kisses if she “adores” him.

Tom Cruise smiling.

Tom Cruise

Blunt starred with Cruise, 61, in the 2014 sci-fi movie “Edge of Tomorrow.”

Christopher McQuarrie, one of the movie’s screenwriters, told Film School Rejects that Blunt herself improvised her on-screen kiss with Cruise.

“As we were shooting that scene at the very end of the movie, we gave up on the kiss. We weren’t even trying to find a place for it anymore,” he said.

“And right as Emily was saying goodbye to Tom, she just kissed him goodbye in the moment. And it was not in the script. It was not even discussed on the day. Afterwards, she said, ‘It just felt right. It felt right, and I did it.’ “

Emily Blunt with her husband, John Krasinski.

John Krasinski

Blunt worked with Krasinski, 44, on “A Quiet Place.” But, considering the facts that she’s been married to him since 2010, and they have two kids, something would be very wrong if he was one of her bad kisses.

See Tom Cruise in a rare photo with both his adult children, Bella and Connor

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise posed for a rare photo with his adult kids Bella, 31, and Connor, 29 .

Though the picture is going viral now, it was posted on Instagram in December 2023 by former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Derrick Brooks.

“I was a little star-struck but played it cool and he said he was too,” Brooks wrote, in part.

Tom Cruise family

In the group photo, Cruise, 61, stands in the front row with Connor, who wears a blue vest. Bella smiles as she peeks her head over the shoulder of another woman.

It has been years since Cruise has been publicly photographed together with both Bella and Connor.

Cruise shares Bella and Connor with ex-wife Nicole Kidman. He is also dad of daughter Suri, 18, from his marriage to Katie Holmes.

Bella is an artist and “has been drawing ever since her wee hands could pick up a pen,” according to her website, where she sells tote bags, graphic T-shirts, and limited-edition prints.

Connor, a former DJ, is an avid fisherman and won a tournament in 2022 after reeling in a 301-pound Warsaw grouper .

Bella and Connor, like their father, are members of the Church of Scientology.

In 2010, Cruise opened up to Esquire about the moment he became a dad through adoption.

“I remember that first night, just staring at Bella. I was checking her every second, just looking at her, feeling that immediate bond. I was probably looking at her so much that I was keeping her up,” he said. “I made a promise to her: All I can do is the best I can. But I’m not going to say I'm gonna do something and then not do it.”

“If I tell you we’re gonna have ice cream on Friday night, we’re gonna have ice cream on Friday night,” he continued. “If I say I’m gonna take your call anytime you need me, and I’m in the middle of something on the set, my world is gonna stop for you. I made that promise to all of my kids.”

“I think I will”: Ian McKellen’s Agent Warned Him Not to Turn Down $546M Tom Cruise Film, He Showed Him Why He’s Magneto

I an McKellen is one of the most respected and talented actors in Hollywood. Over the course of his lengthy career, he established himself as a force to be reckoned with, achieving so much through his acting career that he was even knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. His versatility knows no limitations, having starred in many different kinds of roles and movies from all genres.

Considering just how talented and successful he is, it is not surprising that the actor is offered many different types of roles. Sometimes that may be through lesser-known sources, and others they may be very high-profile projects.

It would seem that the actor was asked to be a part of Tom Cruise’s iconic film series, Mission: Impossible , being offered the role of Commander Swanbeck in the second movie. Interestingly enough, the actor rejected this offer due to one reason.

Mission: Impossible Was Far Too Cryptic

During an interview with People , Ian McKellen revealed that he was offered a role in Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible II . He mentioned that he was originally supposed to play Anthony Hopkins’ role as Commander Swanbeck. However, there was one aspect of the deal that made him hesitate to join the cast.

Filming One The Hobbit Scene Got Sir Ian McKellen “Quite Tearful”: “This is not why I became an actor”

“I got offered a part in Mission: Impossible II with Tom Cruise, but they wouldn’t let me see the whole script because I might have spilled the beans. I only got my scenes.”

He revealed that the movie’s creators would not allow him to read the entire script. He was only allowed to go through his scenes. Fans of the film series are aware that Swanbeck’s character gets very little screen time, which would mean that McKellen could only see very small sections of the story. This was to make sure the script did not leak.

Ian McKellen Did Not Want To Be Kept In The Dark

A condition where he was completely in the dark was not very appealing to Ian McKellen, which is not surprising. If the actor had agreed to this condition, he would be agreeing to be a part of a project, without actually knowing what he had signed onto. Pondering the decision, it would seem that he went to his agent for advice.

“Well, I couldn’t judge from reading just those scenes what the script was like. So I said no. And my agent said, “You can’t say no to working with Tom Cruise!” and I said, “I think I will.””

Rather than taking his side, McKellen’s agent asked if the actor was really going to pass on the opportunity to be a part of the Mission: Impossible world. Such vanity did not seem to be a matter of concern for the actor, so he let the role pass. Interestingly enough, he received two calls the next day; one for the role of Magneto and one for Gandalf.

“I did not like Xmen97 Magneto at the outset but…”: Michael Fassbender or Sir Ian McKellen May Not Be the Best Magneto in X-Men Universe Anymore

The X-Men films and The Lord of the Rings franchise have become some of McKellen’s most well-known works to date.

How a Mission: Impossible Casting Choice Changed the Course of Marvel Movies Forever

A 'Mission: Impossible II' star was supposed to play a Marvel legend, but fate (and shooting schedules) intervened.

The Big Picture

  • Dougray Scott missed out on the role of Wolverine in X-Men due to Tom Cruise's refusal to let him film while still working on Mission: Impossible 2 .
  • Hugh Jackman's portrayal as Wolverine had a significant impact on the future of Marvel movies and the dominance of comic book adaptations in mainstream cinema.
  • The casting of Wolverine with Jackman instead of Scott played a pivotal role in shaping the film industry as we know it today.

The Marvel and Mission: Impossible movies are some of the most recognizable and long-running film franchises today. The Marvel movies, which include those from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as separate films made by 20th Century Fox and Sony, and the Tom Cruise -centered franchise famous for its life-or-death stunt choreography, show no signs of slowing down in financial viability or popularity. And bizarrely enough, at the dawn of the 21st century, these two franchises converged at a pivotal crossroads that altered the course of mainstream cinema for the foreseeable future.

Mission: Impossible II

IMF agent Ethan Hunt is sent to Sydney to find and destroy a genetically modified disease called "Chimera".

Hugh Jackman Wasn't the First Choice for Wolverine

For Mission: Impossible 2 , the John Woo -directed sequel to the original 1996 film, Dougray Scott was cast as the lead villain pitted against Cruise's Ethan Hunt. For Scott, a relatively unknown Scottish actor who previously appeared in Deep Impact and Ever After , getting the chance to perform elaborate combat scenes and stunts with Cruise was a huge break. In the film, he played Sean Ambrose, a rogue IMF agent in possession of a deadly virus and its remedy. The plot machinations and action sequences of the sequel are as ridiculous as we'd expect — even for a Mission: Impossible film — but this doesn't affect the great fortune benefited to Scott by being billed second in a notable summer 2000 blockbuster.

Things continued to fall in Scott's favor when he was cast as Wolverine in the upcoming X-Men film that would be released just following Mission: Impossible II . Initially, director Bryan Singer wanted to cast Russell Crowe as the famous mutant. Crowe, who was scheduled for an Oscar-winning turn in Gladiator , turned it down, but he recommended his close friend, the then-unknown Hugh Jackman , to Singer. However, Singer decided to go with Scott , who, with supporting roles in two massive summer films, was on the cusp of emerging as a household name. Until, that is, the epitome of bad luck arrived knocking at the door. The Mission: Impossible franchise has a history of troubled productions , script rewrites, and behind-the-scenes accidents. The second installment was no different. Action set pieces were created before a script was finished , according to screenwriter Robert Towne . In 2020, female lead Thandiwe Newton opened up about her unpleasant experience working on the film, recalling that she was "scared" of Cruise and his domineering attitude. The creative positions of these films are also frequently in a state of flux. Early into production, Oliver Stone was attached to direct Mission: Impossible II .

Amid a tense set and Cruise's demand for practical stunts that put himself in harm's way (seen in the film's famous opening scene where Hunt is free solo climbing), Mission: Impossible II fell behind schedule. To literally add insult to injury, Scott was inflicted with a shoulder injury during a shooting, putting his availability for X-Men in question. Because this was such a substantial project for Fox, they couldn't afford to waste time. Scott's commitment to Mission: Impossible 2 and on-set injury forced Singer and the studio to re-cast Wolverine. Scott was out, Jackman was in, and the rest is history. The Australian actor's stardom would be launched because of the role, and his tenure as the mutant with razor-sharp claws would last 17 years, appearing in numerous X-Men films and off-shoots, including the highly anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine .

Tom Cruise Wouldn't Let Scott Leave 'Mission: Impossible II'

Recently, Scott sat down with The Daily Telegraph in 2020 and revealed that none other than Cruise denied him from appearing in X-Men . "You’ve got to stay and finish the film," Scott recounts Cruise telling him. Despite promising he would finish Mission: Impossible II , Cruise would not let him begin shooting X-Men , according to Scott. "He was a very powerful guy. Other people were doing everything to make it work." It's unfortunately then that Scott has become synonymous with being on the wrong end of a casting "what if?" Though, at least publicly, Scott seems magnanimous about the state of affairs, stating in the Daily Telegraph interview that he respects what Jackman accomplished as Wolverine. "He's a lovely guy," he said.

While Jackman would become universally adored as Wolverine, Scott's portrayal as the villain in perhaps the most derided Mission: Impossible film faded away into obscurity. The domino effect of Scott's commitment to the film on the future of Marvel movies and cinema at large is immeasurable. Singer's X-Men movies were a hit both financially and critically — proving that films adapted from Marvel Comics could be legitimate and crowd-pleasing, and Jackman's presence was integral to their fabric. His Wolverine was granted three separate standalone films , including the highly acclaimed revisionist take on the superhero, Logan .

Wolverine's Re-Casting Made Hugh Jackman a Massive Star

It's impossible to theorize how well Scott would have done in the role of Wolverine, but his ability to reach the same heights that Jackman achieved feels implausible. Who's to say that the X-Men films land with the public in the same way if Scott was ultimately cast? By the nature of the butterfly effect, this could have shaken up the core of mainstream cinema, which is today dominated by comic book adaptations.

And while everyone thought Logan was the perfect send-off to Jackman's Wolverine, Jackman will be returning to the screen as the famed mutant in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine . As for Scott, his career never soared to the heights that Jackman has reached. He was a recurring star in Season 3 of Desperate Housewives , portrayed Arthur Miller in My Week with Marilyn , and starred in Taken 3 in the aftermath of Mission: Impossible II . His near miss as Wolverine emphasizes the amount luck can play in a Hollywood career. Jackman's portrayal as Wolverine is widely celebrated, making the image of the comic book character inseparable from the actor.

In addition to an accomplished Broadway career in his repertoire, Jackman's life was drastically altered due to Scott's injury or Tom Cruise's stubbornness — whichever one may be true. Without a captivating performance of a fan-favorite character in the X-Men universe, maybe there is no Spider-Man trilogy from Sam Raimi or maybe Robert Downey Jr. never signs with Marvel and ostensibly launches the MCU . In an alternate universe, without Jackman as Wolverine, the entire film industry could be unrecognizable, for better or worse.

Mission: Impossible II is available to watch on Prime Video and Paramount+ in the U.S.

Tom Cruise’s Kids: Everything to Know About His Mysterious Relationships With Connor, Isabella & Suri

Tom Cruise may be the biggest movie star, but he's also a family man! We've got all the details on Tom Cruise's relationships with his son Connor and daughters Isabella and Suri.

Tom Cruise is an iconic actor, but more importantly, he’s a father. The Top Gun star, who has been married three times , shares two adopted kids — Connor Cruise  and Isabella ‘Bella’ Cruise  — with his ex-wife, Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman . He also has one biological child, a daughter named Suri  with his other ex-wife, Katie Holmes .

Tom lives an extremely private life, despite being a major movie star. While he may hit the occasional red carpet if he has a movie premiering, the actor is rarely photographed anywhere else, or with his kids. Though, he does have a relationship with all three. Tom was most recently seen in a photo in December 2023 with his and Nicole’s children, Connor and Bella, after athlete Derrick Brooks shared a group shot to Instagram .

Isabella Cruise

Tom Cruise & his kids

Tom and Nicole adopted Connor and Isabella during their decade-long marriage in the ’90s. Isabella, who was born on December 22, 1992, took a page out of her father’s book by adopting a lifestyle away from the spotlight, however, she recently resurfaced on her Instagram  with a selfie on August 25, and fans went wild. The new photo came four months after she last shared a photo of her face online, so her followers were elated to see her sharing a new picture of herself.

The London-based artist owns a company with the title of her namesake, “Bella Kidman Cruise,” which sells phone cases, tote bags, and more. As far as her personal life is concerned, Bella married Max Parker , an IT consultant, in an intimate ceremony in London in September of 2015. Neither Bella’s nor Max’s parents attended, which led to speculation that she was estranged from her parents. Though, that was later proven not to be the case .

“Of course [we talk], they’re my parents. Anyone who says otherwise is full of sh-t,” Isabella told Daily Mail in March of 2016. When asked if it was hard not to have Tom walk Isabella down the aisle to give her away, Max admitted, “Yeah. It is what it is.” Isabella also has a good relationship with her mother, whose last name is included in her company’s name. And, she’s close with her brother, Connor, which is evidenced by various social media posts.

Isabella caused a slight stir in July 2021 when she and brother Connor both posted a selfie – a rare thing from these private kids – on the same day. Bella’s selfie was taken during the Euro Championship when England took on Denmark. “My face during extra time. Fingers crossed,” she captioned the shot. It clearly worked, as England prevailed. Earlier in the year, Bella posted another selfie – a black and white photo advertising prints in her shop. When Isabella shared a snap in September 2021 , fans thought she looked amazing.

Connor Cruise

Tom & Connor Cruise

Just like his sister, Connor, who was born on January 17, 1995, also enjoys living a private life. Though, he was very much in the spotlight in the past. Connor briefly followed in his parents’ footsteps and starred in two films — 2008’s Seven Pounds and 2012’s Red Dawn remake. The well-accomplished DJ eventually pursued his passion for deep-sea fishing, though, and now spends a lot of time in Clearwater, Florida, as seen on his Instagram page. Connor is very close with his sister, which was further proven by a cute throwback photo he shared to his Instagram in August 2019.

Connor appears to be quite close with his dad, too, as the two were most recently spotted together in October 2019. The father and son bonded over the actor’s love for helicopters, according to People — which reported that Tom took Connor on a chopper in London to show him “some aviation basics.” In 2012, Connor tweeted a black and white baby photo of himself, along with Isabella, in the arms of Tom.

While on a fishing trip in Costa Rica in February 2021, Connor showed off a catch that was almost bigger than him. “ Yellowfin were chewing today ,” he captioned the shot. He became an “ influencer ” in March of that year, launching the @connorsmeatshack IG account with his friend, Kim Joyce . The BBQ-themed account featured Connor’s love of grilling, and the man knows his way around a “rolled cap of ribeye and some lobstah tails,” as he put it . When the summer months rolled around, Connor decided to shave off his hair. “ New face, who dis? ” he captioned a June 8 IG story.

While on an August 2022 fishing trip with friends, Connor showed off his catch – a massive fish he hauled in from the ocean. In his most recent post, Connor revealed that he and his fishing buddies donated a large portion of their catch — “108 pounds of grouper” to be exact — to a charity. “I know it was tough to fit that in the truck but glad the fish was able to go and help those in need of it!!,” he wrote. Overall, Connor is enjoying a life of fishing, grilling, and living in the great outdoors.

Suri Cruise

Tom & Suri Cruise

Following his 2001 divorce from Nicole, Tom went on to marry Katie Holmes in 2006. They welcomed their only biological child, a daughter named Suri, that same year on April 18. Suri made her magazine debut on the October 2006 cover of Vanity Fair with her then-married parents. The accompanying photoshoot showed the family smiling while cuddled up together. Unfortunately, the trio didn’t have a happily ever after. Tom and Katie eventually divorced in 2012, and the actor has rarely been seen out with his daughter since the split. Believe it or not, one of their last photographs together was at Disneyland on January 25, 2012.

Tom’s relationship with Suri is a tumultuous one , multiple sources have expressed to  Hollywood Life . “As challenging as things have become for him and his daughter, he still loves her,” an insider told us in April 2019. “Tom never intended to be estranged from his daughter when he decided to have a family with Katie, and he looks forward to repairing their relationship one day,” the source said. Tom and Katie have never spoken publicly about his estranged relationship with Suri. And it’s unclear when the actor and his now teenage daughter last saw one another. Suri resides with her mother in New York City, where she attends school.

While Tom and Suri’s relationship has remained strained, she has continued to have a positive connection with her mother. Suri and Katie are often seen together on the streets of New York City. Suri turned 18 in 2024.
