The investigation quickly zeroes in on a single possible suspect, a former military sniper, who is taken into custody without delay. The questioning of the individual results in one statement: Get Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise).

Reacher, a mysterious former Army investigator, is convinced that the authorities have the correct suspect, but he still agrees to work with the sniper’s defense attorney (Rosamund Pike). However, the more Reacher investigates the situation, the less black and white it seems to be.

2. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)

Jack Reacher returns to enforce his bold brand of justice in the action-packed sequel based on the 2013 novel Never Go Back by Lee Child.

In the films, Jack Reacher, a former soldier and drifter, completes his mission to dismantle a human trafficking organization, he travels to Washington, DC, to meet with his liaison, Major Susan Turner, for dinner. But instead, he runs into her replacement, Colonel Sam Morgan, who tells him that Major Turner has been arrested on espionage charges.

Jack consults with Colonel Bob Moorcroft, her seasoned attorney, who reveals that Major Turner is also under suspicion for the deaths of two American servicemen in Afghanistan. In addition, he informs Jack that a woman has filed a lawsuit against him, claiming that he is the father of her fifteen-year-old daughter, Samantha.

Jack is thrown in jail after being falsely accused of murdering Moorcroft. He realizes that he and Turner are both in the crosshairs of two assassins and that they have been set up. But he comes to her aid, and they make their escape. It doesn’t take long before they figure out that army personnel and a powerful government contractor/arms dealer are involved in a plot.

Additionally, Jack finds out that Samantha is in danger, and he and Turner end up saving her. While they investigate the source of the conspiracy, they decide to keep her safe from the assassin who is after them. What or who can we put our faith in?

How to watch the Jack Reacher TV show

The new TV show released on Amazon Prime Video in February 2022, so you can watch it right now.

Amazon's 'Reacher' is a new action-packed adaptation on Prime Video featuring Lee Child's famous hero.

Jack Reacher fans have an all-action thriller series featuring their favorite hero to get their teeth into. Move over Tom Cruise though, as Reacher on Amazon Prime Video will star Titans ’ Alan Ritchson as the towering, roaming veteran military police investigator in a thrilling new action-packed mystery crime series based on the novels by Lee Child . 

Like the famous movies starring Tom Cruise, 2012’s  Jack Reacher  and 2016’s  Jack Reacher: Never Go Back , the eight-part series is packed with bare-knuckle fight scenes, clever stunts, gun battles, and a hint of romance, and has author Lee Child on board as executive producer.

So here’s everything we know so far about the Jack Reacher spin-off coming to Amazon Prime Video, including its first-look pictures and trailer…

'Reacher' release date

All eight episodes of Reacher will be released worldwide Friday, Feb. 4 2022 on Amazon Prime Video. 

It's one of a string of exciting things coming to Amazon Prime, including Amazon's Lords of the Rings TV series .

Is there a 'Reacher' trailer?

Yes, there's a great trailer for Reacher released by Amazon Prime Video. It shows Ritchson’s Reacher arriving in fictional town of Margrave, where he piques the interest of the local authorities, who are disturbed by the seven deaths that coincide with his arrival. It shows some thrilling fist fights, an obligatory topless shot, plus a scene of him popping off a beer bottle with just his muscles, and also hints at some romance for the character. 'Reacher' plot

Reacher is based on Lee Child’s first Jack Reacher novel, Killing Floor , and follows the police investigator fresh out of the military, as he turns up in the small town of Margrave, Georgia, to find a community dealing with its first murder in 20 years. The cops immediately arrest Reacher and eyewitnesses claim to place Reacher at the scene of the crime. But while he works to prove his innocence, a deep-seated conspiracy begins to emerge.

"Within minutes of him arriving, he's arrested for murder," says Alan Ritchson, 39. "He basically has to solve the case to prove his innocence, and along the way he starts to uncover this sinister plot, and realises it’s close to home!’

Alan Ritchson is best known for playing Hank Hall (aka Hawk) in DC’s Titans and Aquaman in Smallville . And at six foot three inches tall, he’s much closer to the imposing six foot five character in Lee Child’s novels compared to Cruise, who’s five foot seven.

Reacher star Alan Ritchson told Whattowatch.com : "He is a retired military police officer who is huge, violent, highly intelligent, and an incredible detective. Now that he’s out of the military, he sort of wanders the country, and trouble seems to find him. He’s that knight in shining armour who cleans up the streets for us. He is the drifter who comes into town, and who doesn’t rely on the law because he is the law."

Alan says he found Reacher’s combination of brains and brawn, together with his tendency not to say much, fascinating to play. "You expect somebody who looks like that to be a bit of a brute. But Reacher’s so sharp that he's one step ahead of everybody. He's a man of few words, and he allows people to believe what they want to believe about him. So he’s a mental gymnast, but the size of an ox!"

'Reacher' cast — who else is starring

The Reacher cast also includes  What We Do in the Shadows ’ Harvey Guillén and  iZombie ’s Malcolm Goodwin, while  The Goldfinch ’s Willa Fitzgerald as cop Roscoe Conklin and Bruce McGill ( My Cousin Vinny ) plays Mayor Teale. 

You'll also see Jack Reacher as a child, so there must be flashback scenes somewhere along the line in the drama. Young Reacher is played by Maxwell Jenkins, who famously plays Will Robinson in Lost In Space on Netflix.

Fans of British soaps should look out for Matthew Marsden, who was Chris Collins in Coronation Street . He plays Stan Reacher in this drama.

All about Jack Reacher novelist Lee Child

The hugely popular Jack Reacher novels read like a love letter to America, packed as they are with diners and motels that their protagonist visits as he drifts from one small town to another across the US, righting wrongs along the way. However, their creator, Lee Child , was born in Coventry, schooled in Birmingham, studied law in Sheffield and worked in television production in Manchester. It was only after the publication of his first novel Killing Floor , on which the new series Reacher is based, that Lee Child – born James Grant – emigrated to the US.

"America is an exciting place to live and an ideal setting for my series of thrillers," says the 67-year-old. "My stories have been set all over the US – from Montana to Mississippi."

Despite the success of the books, Lee Child announced in 2020 that he would be letting his brother, Andrew Grant , take over authorship of the Reacher series. 

"Andrew really is me 15 years ago, still full of energy, still full of ideas," says Lee, who has already co-written three Reacher books with his sibling."And so I think this is the perfect solution."

Reacher season 3: Everything we know so far

T he era of Jack Ryan may be over, but Reacher is carrying on as one of the best shows on Amazon Prime Video . This action thriller is based upon Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels, which previously featured Tom Cruise in the leading role of two different movies. But for Prime Video, Alan Ritchson has stepped into the role of Jack Reacher, a former member of the United States Army Military Police Corps who drifts from town to town and takes justice into his own hands when the local law enforcement isn’t enough.

Prime Video didn’t waste any time before renewing Reacher for a third season last year. And while new episodes are still several months away, we’re sharing everything we know about Reacher season 3.

Which Reacher novel will season 3 be based on?

Lee Childs has written 28 Reacher novels to date, with a 29th arriving later this year, so fans weren’t sure which book would be used for Reacher season 3’s storyline. Thankfully, Ritchson confirmed in January 2024 that the third season will be based on the seventh novel, Persuader .

And if you need some story hints, this is the official synopsis for Persuader :

“Jack Reacher lives for the moment. Without a home. Without commitment. And with a burning desire to right wrongs—and rewrite his own agonizing past. DEA Susan Duffy is living for the future, knowing that she has made a terrible mistake by putting one of her own female agents into a death trap within a heavily guarded Maine mansion.

Staging a brilliant ruse, Reacher hurtles into the dark heart of a vast criminal enterprise. Trying to rescue an agent whose time is running out, Reacher enters a crime lord’s waterfront fortress. There, he will find a world of secrecy and violence—and confront some unfinished business from his own past.”

Which cast members will return?

Of course, Alan Ritchson is back as Jack Reacher. There’s no show without him. So far, the only other cast member confirmed to return is Maria Sten as Frances Neagley. While there could potentially be more returning characters, the narrative of Reacher usually means that each season will feature an almost entirely new cast.

Who’s joining the cast of Reacher season 3?

Anthony Michael Hall’s Zachary Beck appears to be the primary villain of Reacher season 3. However, Beck may share that role with Francis Xavier Quinn, as played by Brian Tee. Quinn is a man whom Reacher believed to be dead, and the reveal that Quinn survived and escaped justice is what will push season 3’s story forward.

Sonya Cassidy is also joining the cast this season as DEA agent Susan Duffy, with Roberto Montesinos as DEA agent Guillermo Villanueva and Daniel David Stewart as DEA agent Steven Elliot. Johnny Berchtold will also play Richard Beck, the son of Zachary Beck.

When will Reacher season 3 premiere?

The smart money has Reacher season 3 arriving in December 2024, roughly one year after season 2. However, since Ritchson said that production was almost finished in February, Prime Video could potentially release it sooner.

Director Edward Zwick opens up about Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, addressing the Tom Cruise flick’s poor box office performance and reception.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back director Edward Zwick addresses the movie's lackluster box office performance. Based on the bestselling books by Lee Child, the first Jack Reacher movie was released in 2012, introducing Tom Cruise as the titular former Military Police Officer in an outing that earned somewhat lukewarm reviews from critics but proved to be a draw for audiences. Zwick took over from director Christopher McQuarrie for the 2016 sequel, which follows the character as he attempts to prove the innocence of his former Army major. The film failed to perform, essentially killing the movie franchise.

In his new book, Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood , Zwick opens up about the failure of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back . The director takes full responsibility for the movie not working, citing a desire to put his own spin on the story that ultimately didn't end up working for audiences. ‘Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,’ which Tom Cruise and I made in 2016, fizzled at the box office. I blame myself (and my willing accomplice, Don Granger) for thinking the audience might enjoy a mash-up of ‘Jack Reacher’ and ‘Paper Moon,’ when in fact they just wanted more red meat. I had a wonderful time working with Cobie Smulders, and I certainly don’t blame Tom for not being six two — as the novelist Lee Child described his protagonist — and should Tom happen to call about making a third movie together, I’ll definitely pick up.

Jack Reacher 2's Box Office Explained

Why the tom cruise sequel wasn't a hit.

Made on an estimated budget of $60 million, the first Jack Reacher movie ended up making $218.3 million at the box office. Although critics weren't all on board with the film, there was clearly something to the McQuarrie and Cruise collaboration that worked for audiences. The sequel is estimated to feature more or less the same $60 million budget, but only grossed $162.1 million worldwide. While this doesn't make the film a financial disaster, it's a significant step down from the first movie.

Cruise and McQuarrie have gone on to enjoy a fruitful collaboration on the Mission: Impossible franchise, with McQuarrie helming every installment since Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (in addition to doing script work on Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol ).

While Cruise's charismatic performance, some slick action sequences, and McQuarrie's assured directing elevated the first Jack Reacher above more standard action-movie fare, the sequel didn't have the same winning combination of ingredients. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back was criticized for being predictable, and the action didn't have the same energy as the original. As seen in the chart below, the movie, at least by Rotten Tomatoes' metrics, failed to resonate with both audiences and critics:

If the reviews had been bad but the box office strong, it's possible that Jack Reacher 3 could have happened. Instead, Child's source material made the jump to the small screen in the form of Prime Video's well-reviewed Reacher series, which sees Alan Ritchson replace Cruise as the title character. Although Zwick may be open to another installment after Jack Reacher: Never Go Back , it's not looking likely that one will ever come to fruition.

Jack Reacher 3 Will Probably Never Happen

Tom cruise has moved on.

In addition to the poor critical and commercial performance of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back , Prime Video's Reacher series has been a big hit for the streamer. The series debuted in 2022, and it's generally much more faithful to Child's source material. Ritchson has also widely been celebrated for his performance, and his physicality more closely matches the 6'5" giant described in Child's novels.

Child has previously spoken about the importance of Reacher's physicality, telling Metro in 2022 that " Reacher has got to scare people and you can do that so much easier with one glance of this huge animal rather than a normal-sized actor." The series' approach to the source material has been effective thus far, with season 1 holding a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, and season 2 holding a 98%. Reacher season 3 is confirmed to be on the way, and it wouldn't really make sense to have two different takes on the same character in the culture at the same time.

Reacher season 3 is currently filming and will likely premiere on Prime Video later this year or in early 2025.

For his part, Cruise seems content to leave the role behind. Speaking about his desire to reach out to Cruise before playing the character, Ritchson revealed on The Rich Eisen Show last year that he was told the movie star " wants to just move on from this ," and that he " gave [Reacher] his blessing ". With Mission: Impossible 8 on the way and a movie set in outer space in the works, Cruise clearly has moved on, meaning Jack Reacher: Never Go Back will almost certainly be the final time he plays the character.
