ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Some visitors of a more than 120-year-old Asheville neighborhood went home Saturday night, Dec. 9, feeling more connected to the area's history after taking part in the annual Montford Holiday Tour of Homes.

One of the homeowners touring a home shared why the area is such an important part of not only Asheville's history but the state's history.

PROJECT WOULD TURN CHURCH IN HISTORIC MONTFORD NEIGHBORHOOD INTO CONDOS

"I would say, what's nice about living in Montford is, well, having built a community here and having lived here my whole childhood, there's a lot of people who have lived in the neighborhood for decades and really support each other," said Lillian Payne, Montford area homeowner. "But just the beautiful historic homes are gorgeous to look at and walk by."

All the funds raised at Saturday's tours went towards the Montford Neighborhood Association , which is a nonprofit community organization.

PSABC is proud to once again participate in the National Arts & Crafts Conference with our Historic Home Tour.  This conference draws Arts & Crafts enthusiasts from all over the country for a weekend of seminars, group discussions, demonstrations, selling shows and our home tour.

This year, the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County is pleased to offer four or more unique historic homes for the Historic Home Tour. The homes on the tour are located in the historic Montford Neighborhood. Planning for the Montford Neighborhood we know today began in 1889 as Asheville’s first electric streetcar suburb by the Asheville Loan, Construction and Improvement Company. Development proceeded slowly until business tycoon George W. Pack took over the enterprise. The sprawling and irregularly shaped residential neighborhood grew to include a collection of houses representing a variety of architectural styles from the early twentieth century, which are included on this tour.

Almost time for lightning bugs: Here's how to see rare blue ghost fireflies in Western NC

tour of homes asheville

An annual event tied to one of Western North Carolina's natural wonders is coming back for the season. The Blue Ghost Firefly Twilight Tour will return May 14.

The tour's website describes the appearance of blue ghost fireflies as resembling "a tribe of fairies carrying blue candles through the forest." These unique, rare insects only live in a few areas, one of which is WNC's "Land of Waterfalls," Transylvania County.

Ghost fireflies are known for having a distinctive blue-green glow, unlike the yellow light you may be used to. The White Squirrel Institute says that blue ghosts are the only firefly species in North America that emits blue light, and are one of the smallest species in the world, measuring about a quarter of an inch long.

Here's what to know about the upcoming tours, and the fireflies they celebrate.

Blue Ghost Firefly Tour 2024

The Twilight Tour takes place at the Cradle of Forestry in America, 11250 Pisgah Highway (U.S. 276) in Pisgah Forest. The program begins at 9 p.m. and runs until 10:30 p.m. General admission is $50, and youth tickets (ages 4-12) are $25.

Each program begins with a 9 p.m. educational presentation at the Cradle of Forestry outdoor amphitheater. After the presentation concludes, guests use the cover of darkness to explore paved trails through the forest in search of blue ghost fireflies .

The tours are self-guided, but team members are stationed at locations throughout the trails to provide further information. Advance ticket purchase is required to attend the tours, so make sure you book online.

When can you see blue ghost fireflies?

Blue ghost firefly mating season is shorter than seasons for more common fireflies. They are generally active in late May to early June, meaning that they are active for only a few short weeks of every year. Like other fireflies, they begin their dance after dark.

The White Squirrel Institute says that every night, males fly low over the forest floor, glowing with a steady blue light. The females, who do not fly, will glow with a fainter blue light from the ground. When a male sees a female, he lands near her and flashes his light in a specific pattern. If the female is interested, she will flash her light back. Once they have matched patterns, they will mate.

Another unique and stunning feature of the insects is that their blue-green glow remains lit for up to a minute.

More: Word from the Smokies: Photographer and parks shine a light on the magic of fireflies

How rare are blue ghost fireflies?

There isn't much data on population numbers, but we know that ghost fireflies are a rare breed and unfortunately, they are only becoming rarer due to habitat loss and light pollution, which can disrupt the mating process. They are currently not on any endangered or protected species lists.

To help conserve these special insects, try reducing your use of artificial light and supporting conservation organizations. When searching for blue ghost fireflies, use a red light if you must use a flashlight. The Cradle of Forestry limits each night of their firefly events to 125 participants to keep their impact on the fireflies' natural habitat minimal.

How can I see blue ghost fireflies for free?

Tours like the one offered by the Cradle of Forestry are your best bet at spotting these rare bugs in their natural environment. However, blue ghost fireflies are found in various areas of the mountains in WNC. Here are some suggestions from the White Squirrel Institute on other areas you might be able to find some of these unique bugs:

  • DuPont State Recreational Forest  – One of the most popular spots for viewing blue ghost fireflies. The forest offers several hiking trails that lead to streams and waterfalls where the fireflies live.
  • Pisgah National Forest  – This large forest has many trails and camping areas, making it ideal for seeing fireflies.
  • Cataloochee Valley   – This remote valley in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is another location for viewing.
  • Chimney Rock State Park  – This park is located about an hour’s drive from Brevard and is known for its scenic views and hiking trails. The blue ghost fireflies live along the trails in the park.

Make sure to check whether the area you're hoping to visit has a closing time that you'll need to observe before visiting.

As Asheville explores more cottage-style homes, legacy neighborhoods express concerns

tour of homes asheville

ASHEVILLE - One suggested solution to fixing the area's housing shortage, aside from funding for more affordable housing, is to relax zoning laws to allow for varied development across the city. Now, a proposal to amend city development laws may do just that.

Under the proposed changes, developers could build new homes on previously undeveloped lots. But the proposal for more cottage-style and smaller, infill housing built alongside single-family homes in Asheville raised concerns among some residents and city commission members.

During the April 3 city of Asheville Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, commissioners postponed voting on the Unified Development Ordinance text amendments, expressing equity concerns and questioning some of the language and specific measurements included in the ordinances.

The amendments are the first phase of the Middle Housing Initiative, a series of sweeping zoning text amendments proposed as a result of Asheville's Middle Missing Housing Study.

Missing middle housing are housing types that have been largely missing from the residential market over the last 70 years, such as: duplexes, cottage courts, triplexes, fourplexes, multiplexes and townhomes.

The first phase includes updates to primarily "backyard housing policy," city urban planner Vaidila Satvika said during the meeting.

The updates would reduce the amount of open space and height requirements for cottages, allow additional dwelling units on parcels with homes of three or fewer units and allow development on more flag lots and backyard lots.

Flag lots are undeveloped lots adjacent to or behind single-family homes.

The second phase would address a variety of development standards and would allow duplexes in all zoning districts. The third phase would update current residential zoning districts.

Satvika believes the second and third phase of the plan would need "a lot more engagement" with the public about proposed changes.

Legacy neighborhoods express concerns

The amendments come as a result of the Missing Middle Housing Study, which found that smaller developments could help address rising housing costs.

However, displacement from new development is a concern for many.

Sophie Dixon, president of the Shiloh community association, said the addition of more units could further disrupt the neighborhood, which has already seen the historical impacts of urban renewal.

"We feel that Shiloh, and the legacy neighborhoods, were put in the opportunity zone and we've got a target on our backs," Dixon said.

"I always throw out that every time we get something that 'looks good' we end up with something like urban renewal," she continued.

Areas of Emma and Shiloh were included as areas of "high vulnerability" for displacement as a result of infill development on the final Missing Middle Housing report developed by consultants from the California-based Opticos Design and Oregon-based Cascadia Partners.

Andrea Golden, a member of the Emma Community and co-director of PODER Emma, said new development as a result of the proposal could end up displacing those in the primarily Latino neighborhood.

"There are other and many areas of our city and our county that don't face the same displacement factors that our neighborhoods face," Golden said, encouraging the commission to look at other areas of Asheville and Buncombe that are more stable.

"We're asking for a equity lens to be used when thinking about changes to our neighborhoods," she continued.

Commissioner looks for answers, push amendments to next meeting

As a result of concerns over the proposed amendments, the city has suggested the development of an overlay district, which would only bring backyard housing options for some neighborhoods throughout the city.

The overlay, while popular among the commission, would require more time to develop

Commissioner Susan Bean suggested the implementation of an overlay district, which would restrict the proposal from impacting legacy and vulnerable neighborhoods. The district would allow those communities to consider the possible impacts from the proposal, while honoring the history of neighborhoods impacted by past development practices like urban renewal, Bean said.

Commission Chair Kim Levi, along with several other commissioners, asked to revisit some elements of the proposal during a future meeting.

Levi also mentioned recent concerns about density from a 95-unit Haw Creek housing project, which has seen significant neighborhood response due to its size.

Shiloh was already at that project's density of 3-5 units per acre a decade ago, Levi said. The neighborhood is already at the future land use density established by the 2018 Living Asheville Comprehensive Plan and the Middle Housing Initiative could add more infill development.

The text amendments were unanimously continued by the commission to the May 1 Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.

Mickey Guyton Announces Fall 2024 CMT On Tour Dates, Drops Emotional ‘Scary Love' Lyric Video

Mickey Guyton is hitting the road this fall for a North American tour. The Grammy-nominated country star announced the dates for her CMT On Tour Presents Mickey Guyton 2024 dates on Friday morning (April 26), along with dropping a sweet lyric video for her new single, "Scary Love."

The 22-date Live Nation-promoted tour is slated to kick off on Sept. 18 at Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta, followed by gigs in New York, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, St. Louis, Chicago, Columbus, Buffalo, Toronto, Boston and Philadelphia before winding down on Nov. 9 in Lexington, Kentucky at Manchester Music Hall.

Tickets for the tour will be available via a artist presale beginning on April 30 at 10 a.m. local time, with additional presales throughout the week leading up to the general on-sale beginning on May 3 at 10 a.m. local time; click here for ticketing details.

Guyton's new single, a gentle ballad about a mother's fierce love, opens with the heart-touching lines, "I see pictures of my mama, hangin' on the wall/ She's never looked so happy, and I've never looked so small/ Now I'm holdin' you and I know what they say is true/ When a baby's born that's when a mother's born too."

Guyton and husband Grant Savoy welcomed their first child, son Grayson, in Feb. 2021 and the acoustic ballad's moving lyric video features home movie footage of Guyton in the hospital cradling her then newborn and spending time with the now toddler. "Cuz I felt it before, but it wasn't like this/ Ain't a thing I wouldn't do, ain't a thing I wouldn't give/ It's the kind you fall into and never hit the bottom of/ It's a scary love," she sings on the chorus.

  • The nonprofit organization has been offering the home tour for 19 years.
  • Participants in this year's tour included Prima at Paseo South Gulch, Pullman at Gulch Union and several private homes.

Rooftop views. Resort-style pools. Sprawling vacation rentals.

Several luxurious homes and rental properties were showcased last week at the Nashville Downtown Partnership's 2024 Home Tour. The nonprofit's yearly event brings in visitors from all over Middle Tennessee to take a peek inside downtown Nashville residences.

The home tour is meant to promote downtown living, share design tips and offer participants a chance to see the city from new angles. Rental apartments from the brand new Prima building at Paseo South Gulch were featured on this year's tour. The mixed use development on 8th Avenue was built by SomeraRoad.

A new building called Pullman at Gulch Union showcased model units for luxury condos soon to hit the market. Prices for those condominiums start at $400,000.

According to the Nashville Downtown Partnership, 17,630 people currently live downtown in an average home size of 813 square feet. More than 4,000 units are currently under construction and at least 13,000 are in planning stages.
