Barcelona Vacation Packages

tour package barcelona spain

Barcelona , the old Roman Barcino , is on the cutting edge of fashion, architecture, food, style, music and good times. Its most powerful monuments: the intricately carved edifices of the medieval Gothic Quarter; the curvilinear modernism (Catalan Art Nouveau) that inspired Antoni Gaudí's Basilica de la Sagrada Familia; and the seminal surrealist works of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro. Walk its narrow streets and wonderful plazas, or along the Ramblas, stretching from Placa de Catalunya to the Harbor. Capital of Catalonia and Spain’s second city, Barcelona is utterly incomparable. It’s one of a few must-see cities with its own identity. This is partly down to a generation of early-20th-century artists and architects, whose buildings are like nothing you’ll see anywhere else.

Its elevation and height offer dazzling views of the Mediterranean Sea.  This park combines the beauty of Gaudi’s work and the tranquility of a green park all rolled into one magnificent place.  When it was constructed between 1900-1914 by the most famous contemporary architect Antoni Guadí, the park was on the northern end of Barcelona.

This wonderful district was still surrounded by medieval walls until the end of the 19th century.    We will hop off the bus and enjoy a stroll through the narrow winding streets of the historic heart of Barcelona.   At the start of our short walk through the historic streets of Barcelona, we will stop for a brief tour of one of Barcelona’s most traditional indoor food markets: Mercat de Santa Caterina.   From there, we will travel back in time, going from the Roman era through to the early Middle Ages, when the Catalan counts were controlling the Mediterranean Sea and Barcelona was the capital of an empire.   Included in this part of the tour is also a visit to the Jewish Quarter, the Royal Palace, the original 2000-year-old Roman Temple, and parts of the Cathedral.   Before our lunch break, we are off to the Born district where the guide will point out a variety of restaurants and tapas bars suitable for lunch before ending the tour in the magnificent Santa Maria del Mar church – one of the most beautiful in Barcelona.

Maria Del Mar Church

Your guide will happily provide you with suggestions for tapas, cafes, and restaurants and ensure your taste buds are happy with whatever you may be craving. Once your stomach is full, it is time to make our way to the famous Park Güell, a city garden designed by Anton Gaudi. Our guide will lead the group down through the park explaining the tantalizing garden concept and introducing you to some of Gaudí’s most bizarre creations.    Next, the bus will take us through the traditional Catalan neighborhood of Gracia, a lovely part of the city with a bohemian vibe.    We will stop at one of the most famous Gaudi buildings of all: La Pedrera. We will have an hour here to explore the monument. Thanks to our Skip the Line policy there will be no waiting in the queues!   After the visit, our tour will end here at around 4 pm. There is the Diagonal metro stop (L4 & L5) just in front of the building.  Still, have energy? Many travelers usually prefer to stroll down the impressive boulevard of Passeig de Gracia towards Placa Cataluña.

A comfortable Bus will take you to the mountain of Montserrat, a jagged mountain climbing up 4,051 feet (1,236 meters).

The rocks of Montserrat were formed by natural cement of sand during the centuries. The wind and rain shaped the mountain with strange and varied forms.

Creative imaginations see human or animal shapes in some of these peaks, giving those names and inventing legends to explain their fantastic origins.

Montserrat Awesome

This trip to Montserrat will allow you to enjoy the wonderful and breathtaking views of Montserrat Mountain, one of nature’s special creations amongst tranquility and beauty.

You will go up to Montserrat with the Cog-Wheel Train. This will drop you in the middle of the Monastery. It is a 15-minute trip with a privileged and spectacular view of the mountain.

The train has panoramic windows, making the actual journey a delight for the senses. The train is air-conditioned as well as wheelchair-friendly.

You will visit the Royal Basilica of Montserrat, which holds the famous 12th-century Romanesque carving of Verge Moreneta (the Black Madonna). This famous statue of the Black Madonna is visible from a distance.

The Benedict Sanctuary of Montserrat was founded in 1025 and provides a mystical backdrop for the Virgin of Montserrat, the patron saint of Catalonia, who is enshrined in the monastery’s Royal Basilica.

The little monastery soon began to receive pilgrims and visitors who spread the word of the miracles and wonders performed by the Virgin. Word of mouth led to more and more pilgrims visiting Montserrat.

Today, Montserrat has been modernized to continue attending to the needs of pilgrims, one thousand years after it was originally founded.

You will be given free time to visit the audiovisual exhibition about the history and creation of Montserrat and taste typical liquors of Montserrat, handmade by the monks of the monastery (both activities are included).

General Tips, Recommendations, and Advice

While Barcelona has a warm, balmy climate it is still adjacent to the sea, which means weather can sometimes be unpredictable. When it does rain, it rains in full tropical style. Although it is unlikely, we recommend having a layer or two just in case. If it is the summer, you have much less to worry about.

If you are doing a tour that includes Montserrat Mountain, definitely bring layers regardless of the season. The weather on the mountain tends to change swiftly.

Wear sunscreen! The sun in Barcelona is strong. Even if you are enjoying a lovely sea breeze, the sun can still burn your skin. It is best to be cautious and not battle a painful sunburn!

Beautiful Barcelona

Wear comfortable shoes. Barcelona is an old city full of charming cobblestone streets and lovely historic districts. Comfortable shoes are essential for the walking tours offered on this list. On the Montserrat tour, you will be walking on a mountain. Sneakers are a great choice.

Make a “must-see” list for your trip. This list will help you navigate our article, as many tours are offered and it can be hard to narrow down which ones you are most interested in.

In addition to your “must-see” list, try to have an open mind for tours and landmarks that weren’t on your radar. Sometimes the most memorable experiences happen out of spontaneity and an open mind.

Did you know?

One fun fact about Barcelona City Tours is that they often include visits to the “Superblocks.” These are innovative urban planning projects aimed at creating pedestrian-friendly zones within the city. In these areas, several city blocks are interconnected, and traffic is restricted to the perimeter, making the interior streets car-free or significantly reduced in traffic. Superblocks are designed to prioritize the well-being of residents and visitors by providing green spaces, playgrounds, outdoor seating, and cultural activities in the heart of the city. They promote a sense of community, reduce pollution, and contribute to a more sustainable and enjoyable urban environment. Exploring these Superblocks on a city tour allows you to witness Barcelona’s commitment to innovative urban planning and sustainability while enjoying a unique urban experience within the bustling city. It’s a testament to Barcelona’s progressive approach to urban design and livability.

We hope that you have gained valuable insight from this article. Acquiring knowledge about the city you are traveling to ensures that you fully enjoy the experience.

Knowledge is power for your upcoming adventure to Barcelona. From the oldest medieval district to the modern one, there are always things to do in Barcelona , to visit and discover.

The more familiar you are with the tours on offer, the more prepared you are to tailor the trip to meet your expectations and create memories that last a lifetime.  Now it is your turn! We love feedback so don’t be shy. Please leave comments and questions below!

Barcelona Tours, Vacations & Travel Packages

Our Barcelona Tours

Barcelona is the capital and largest city of Catalonia and Spain's second-largest city. It is located directly on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Barcelona's official languages are Catalan and Spanish. However, most signs are indicated only in Catalan because it is established by law as the administrative language. Yet, Spanish is also widely used in public transport and other facilities. Most locals are bilingual in Catalan and Spanish and instinctively address foreigners in Spanish. In 1992, Barcelona gained international recognition by hosting the Olympic Games. This had the effect of changing the city with neighbourhoods being renovated. For visitors, this has translated into the very modern, yet also incredibly old city you see now on Spain holidays. The new elements work to preserve complement. and celebrate the old.

Barcelona Trip Highlights

This very attractive city is full of outdoor markets, restaurants, shops, museums and churches and is excellent for walking around plus it has an extensive and reliable Metro system for more far-flung destinations. The centre of the city is focused around the Ciutat Vella ("Old City") which allows the visitor to experience the life of Barcelona while the beaches that the city was built on provide sun and relaxation during the long periods of agreeably warm weather. Las Ramblas is a beautiful tree-lined pedestrian walkway and the busiest and most lively street in the city. Often called Les Rambles because it is actually a series of several different streets each called 'Rambla de …’ of which the sections each have a distinctly different feel. Placa Reial, near Las Ramblas, is where one can enjoy a sangria and is a great place to sit, relax and drink especially in the evenings on a trip to Spain.

Placa de Catalunya

As you get closer to Placa Catalunya, you will find more street performers, including those in costume. Towards the pier, there are artists who do pencil drawings, paintings, etc. La Placa de Catalunya is the epicentre of the city connecting all the major streets. The Square is known for its fountains and statues plus the shops that surround it. A favourite meeting spot for locals is the El Portal de l'Angel. This large pedestrian walkway is one of the most expensive streets in all of Spain and offers visitors many new and stylish shops.

Barceloneta

For a pleasant excursion while on a holiday in Spain, the Harbour Cable Car aerial tramway connects Montjuic which overlooks the city, to Barceloneta, the harbour region that was heavily revitalized and turned into a beach suburb for the 1992 Olympic Games. It starts in Barceloneta on the top of the 78-metre/255 feet tall Torre San Sebastian tower, which has also a restaurant at the top.

Sagrada Familia

No one can visit Barcelona and not be aware of the renowned architect, Antoni Gaudi. His uniquely whimsical architectural style is to be seen all over the city. Gaudi was born a Catalan and produced some of the most moving buildings and works of art still standing. While many were controversial in their day, they’ve since become icons, beloved by locals and Spaniards alike. The most famous is the Sagrada Familia, one of the most famous and breathtaking locations to visit in Barcelona. Although still incomplete a century after it was begun, the church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the outside, visitors will be astonished by the sheer height and intricacy of the design of the church, and while slow and filled with detail, the progress that has been made is impressive. The project began nearly a century ago. The height of the church will be, once it is finished, exactly equal to the height of the largest mountain in the nearby hills. The height is overwhelming when standing at its base and the inside of this masterpiece is even more impressive. Other Gaudi architecture includes the Parc Guell with its unusual layout and ornamentation and the apartment buildings of La Pedrera/Casa Milà and La Casa Batllo both of which can be visited internally.

Many travellers on trips to Spain don’t realize how many great day trips are located close to Barcelona. Perhaps chief among these, Montserrat lies in the beautiful Montserrat mountain range. A beautiful monastery stands at the centre of the mountain range where visitors can attend masses that include wonderful live church choirs, composed of young men who live at the monastery.

Figueres is a small city in Catalonia. It has a wealth of history spanning many centuries that has been preserved and reflected in several museums in the area as well as in the compact Old Town. The city's main attraction is the world-famous museum and theatre of a native son, Salvador Dalí. After the Prado in Madrid , it is the most visited museum in all of Spain.

  • Costa Brava

Girona is an ancient town several thousands of years old. The town has an attractive Jewish quarter. Girona is said to consistently win a country-wide poll of citizens as their preferred city to live in. The Old Town is on the east bank of a river, with narrow pedestrian streets surrounded by old city walls. The Costa Brava is a coastal region starting at Blanes which is only 60 kilometres/37 miles northeast of Barcelona, boasting excellent beaches while on a trip to Spain. Other well-known resorts are Tossa de Mar and Lloret de Mar.

Extend your Stay

Consider an additional stopover to your  Spain vacation  at one of Goway's other European destinations. You can choose from a  Paris vacation , a  London vacation  or an  Amsterdam vacation . This can be done stopping over en route to or from Spain.

Overall, I think it was a good way to see most of the country in the shortest time possible. Some things could’ve been better but it was expected. The guides are fantastic and the vibe was nice, especially meeting other people from different countries. I recommend this tour for anyone who’s a bit “laisser faire” and be surprised day to day by what the trip has to offer. Finally, the accommodation was a bit random: some hotels were nice, others not so much. I hope VPT takes care of that and not to contract cheap hotels that skimp on water and decent beds (mine was wobbly).

What people love about spain tours from barcelona.

One awesome trip leader
Before I arrived on this tour I thought my highlights would be Barcelona and San Sebastian but honestly, I enjoyed every moment of the holiday! The food and drink in this region is excellent and relatively cheap compared to the UK. You don't spend much time on the tour at the start in Barcelona or at the end in Madrid so I would recommend booking at least an extra night pre/post tour to be able to both great cities. Pamplona has a nice historical old town with some nice walks. San Sebastian is just the place to go to for foodies but is also a nice place in its own right! Logrono is the capital of the La Rioja region so you know you'll get to taste some good wine. I will definitely be coming back to this region! For the tour overall, I felt that we didn't really need 2 nights in Logrono and could have done with either an extra night in San Sebastian to visit Bilbao or a night in Bilbao itself. And that's taking into account the included evening tour of Logrono and the winery tour activities. Beware the 4hr + coach journey from Logrono to Madrid. Our tour leader, Maria Christina did a great job considering that she had to take over at short notice. She organised all our public transport and organised the optional meals, selecting some very decent restaurants. I definitely think she made the trip more enjoyable! I had great fun on this trip and hopefully have made some good friends for life!

These are the cheapest European package holidays for summer 2024

The likes of Spain, Greece and Italy are surprisingly some of the most affordable, according to Which? Travel

Liv Kelly

Plenty of us love the freedom of browsing for the most convenient flights and then for the perfect little hotel. However, sometimes it’s nice to save on time, faff and money by booking a package holiday  – and thanks to a new ranking, we now know exactly where to go for the cheapest package trips across Europe .

The experts at  Which? Travel have analysed over 4,500 holidays that are still available to book for this summer, and compiled a list of the ten cheapest destinations offering a package deal.

And the best value deals might not be where you’d expect. Places such as Bulgaria and Türkiye  have garnered quite the budget-friendly rep, but classic holiday hot spots such as Greece , Spain and Italy actually boast some of the cheapest options for 2024.

Claiming the top spot is Kalymnos , a lesser-known Dodecanese island in Greece characterised by secluded little coves and ridiculously blue waters. The cheapest holiday was £794 per person, but the average here is £847 (€987.50). Given it’s around a 40-minute boat ride from Kos, that’s a pretty good deal.

In fourth place, it’s the Costa Brava in Spain – we know, we’re shocked too. The gorgeous stretch of coast just north of Barcelona has some cracking beaches, and the package holiday price here is around £952 (€1,110) per person.

But the biggest and maybe most pleasant surprise of all is that the Amalfi Coast has made the top 10, in spot number six. At around £977 (€1,139), this typically expensive region actually boasts a couple of low-key resorts such as Minori and Maiori , which are great options for a cheaper getaway. What ’ s more,  the region will soon be getting an airport , finally !

These are the 10 cheapest European package holiday destinations, according to Which? Travel

  • Kalymnos, Greece (£847, €987.50)
  • Thassos, Greece (£862, €1,005)
  • Lefkada, Greece (£935, €1,090)
  • Costa Brava, Spain (£952, €1,110)
  • Venetian Riviera, Italy (£965, €1,125)
  • Amalfi Coast, Italy (£977, €1,139)
  • Skopelos, Greece (£985, €1,148)
  • Costa de la Luz, Spain (£994, €1,159)
  • Campania, Italy (£998, €1,164)
  • Malta (£1,006, €1,173)
