Paintings made by jail inmates are also on display.

Museo Sorsogon also has a large amphitheater in its yard alongside two coffee shops where visitors can relax and have snacks. The museum is tucked within the Provincial Capitol grounds in Alegre, Sorsogon City and you can visit it as part of a Sorsogon sightseeing tour . While here, visitors can swim/snorkel underwater and enter the bamboo enclosures to view sea creatures, reefs, and plants up close. Examples of marine species in the sanctuary include giant clams, marine turtles, lobsters, sea cucumbers, and oysters.

The Juag Lagoon Fish Sanctuary lies off the coast of the Matnog town port. It is one of the usual stops of a standard Matnog island hopping tour itinerary.

Paguriran Island and Lagoon is one of the natural wonders of Sorsogon. Travel guides best describe it as a lagoon in the middle of the ocean. Strictly speaking, Paguriran is not an island but more like a large rocky formation out in the sea. Despite being surrounded by water, Paguriran is within walking distance from a sandy shore. You can walk to it during low tide or even high tide when the water level is usually waist-high.

The tourism highlight of Paguriran is its lagoon that occupies the hollow middle portion of the rocky islet. The water in this lagoon reflects a clear aquamarine color, which is considered world-class. The jumping point to Paguriran Island is Barangay Sawangga, Bacon. From Sorsogon City, you can ride a jeepney or a tricycle to the town of Bacon.

Subic Beach is a gorgeous and unspoiled 300-meter sandy stretch on Calintaan Island, Sorsogon. The beach is known for its powdery sand, which features a pinkish-white color. This rare color is due to the presence of tiny red corals around the shoreline. Complementing the unique sand color is the clear turquoise waters, which make Subic Beach very photogenic.

Subic Beach gives off a laid-back vibe and is seldom busy with crowds. It is not ideal for beginner swimmers because the tides are often high, and the water level near the shore is deep. However, it is an excellent place to relax, sunbathe, and read a book. If you like a shaded spot to have a picnic, the beach has small huts available for rent at an affordable fee.

You can also explore other spots in Calintaan Island, including the Calintaan Cave, which can be found on the other side of the island.

Matnog Municipality is the gateway to Subic Beach, Sorsogon. You need to take a 15 to 20-minute boat ride from Matnog to reach Calintaan Island or join a Sorsogon Subic Beach tour .

Another outstanding feature of Tikling is its rock formations located at the other end of the island.

A whale shark swimming near the surface

Donsol is Sorsogon’s most popular destination as it is world-famous for swimming with whale sharks. It's one of the best places where you can swim with whale sharks in the Philippines . Several whale sharks (locally called butanding) naturally congregate around Donsol waters from December to May. Donsol practices responsible eco-tourism that does not alter the behavior of whale sharks. The local guides do not feed these animals for the sake of attracting them to the shore.

Usually, tourists need to sign up for a snorkeling boat tour to see the whale sharks in action. This Donsol whale shark tour  boat will take passengers to the whale shark interaction area. The whale shark tour guide will teach you how to jump into the water and interact with the whale sharks. Sorsogon is quite accessible from Manila via public transport. Several companies operate buses traveling between the metropolis and this province daily. Legazpi City in Albay is also a popular gateway to Sorsogon.

As an emerging tourist destination, more and more Sorsogon hotels and resorts are now opening up for travelers. The coastal areas have beachfront resorts, the inland areas have mountain resorts, while Sorsogon City has many Philippine hotels and guesthouses, which are popular among those traveling on a tighter budget.

Surprisingly, despite its incredible topography, this bucolic region is out-of -the -radar of most tourists. Flanked by vast pastoral lands, soaring peaks, lush jungles, sleepy fishing town and gorgeous beaches, Sorsogon is an impeccable candidate for eco-tourism if promoted, developed, and managed properly.

Here are some of the top tourist spots in Sorsogon by town (alphabetical order):

Look for the Gubat  Bay Surfers at in the premise of Lacsa-Hilton Resort.

My favorite local dishes when I was a child were kinagang ( crayfish meat blended with coconut meat and milk, leaves of mint and wrapped by hagikhik ) and kinunot  (sting ray and shark simmered in coconut milk but is now rare because it’s made of endangered species).  Ensaladang lato (seaweed), tahong, and crabs with coconut milk and p inangat , available at Bigajo Kitchenette, The House of Pinangat are also must-try local favorites.

Bulusan is a great place for adventure lovers.

You can trek to the summit of Mount Bulusan , one of the most active volcanoes in the country. The activity starts by kayaking from Bulusan Lake until reaching the jump-off point to the trail to the summit. This climb is doable as a day hike but most often as an overnight hike.

As Mount Bulusan is active, it’s best to consult with the tourism office first whether it’s safe and open for trekking. As of the recent years, it’s been closed for safety purposes.

For the non-climbers, you can visit Bulusan Volcano National Park , which sits at the foot of the volcano, where you can ride a boat or kayak across the lake. SORSOGON: 6 Places to Spend Time with Nature

tourist spot in castilla sorsogon

When I think about Bicol, a couple of things would come to mind: spicy food and Mayon Volcano. Yet this region holds so much more than this pair of landmarks, for here lies the province of Sorsogon, where many natural treasures can be found. Here are six of them.

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

Paguriran Island

tourist spot in castilla sorsogon

Tucked in the folds of the town of Bacon (pronounced as buh-kuhn , and not like everyone’s favorite food), is a beautiful beach blessed with cream sands and crystal clear waters. It also features a limestone lagoon where you can swim with colorful fish. If you come on a specially good day, you’d also get to see Mayon in the background.

Located in Barangay Sawangga, Paguriran affords a somewhat raw experience because of the meager number of establishments around it. Cottages with thatched roofs line its shores and lodgings available are limited. It’s still pretty bare as far as beaches go, but this adds to its charm. (See featured image/photo)

Bulusan Lake

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jaypee Sunga (@travelwithjayps) on Jan 1, 2019 at 4:53am PST

For a mystical experience, Bulusan Lake is highly recommended. Found in the heart of Bulusan Volcano Natural Park, this crater lake has a sense of quiet magic in it. Rimmed by a rich tropical forest, the water is emerald and calm. It lies next to the active Bulusan Volcano and supports many endemic species of freshwater fish. The prized indigenous Jade Vine also blooms here.

An entrance fee of P15/person is collected to access this place. Canoe rides and kayaking are also possible. You can also go on a trek across one of the forest trails within the park.

San Mateo Hot and Cold Springs

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Crizelda Nicolas Gonzaga (@iamcrizelgonzaga) on Jun 24, 2017 at 5:08am PDT

Fed by the waters of Mount Bulusan, these springs in the town of Irosin is a popular destination not just among tourists but also locals. 5 picture-perfect spots in Sorsogon City, Bicol

5 picture-perfect spots in Sorsogon City, Bicol

Sorsogon City is a picturesque province on the southern tip of Luzon Island. Known as one of the most underrated tourist spots in the Philippines. It covers an expansive 2,000 square kilometers of grounds and is 600 kilometers away from Metro Manila. Traveling might get at least a 10-hour drive considering that it is approximately 600 kilometers away from Metro Manila. However, the Maharlika Highway is the main thoroughfare of Sorsogon province. Its traffic-free roads provide a breath of fresh air and a photographic view. The Sorsogon City Coastal Road opening in August 2020 is another exciting development for road travelers in the south. This 5.52-kilometer-long four-lane road extends from Rompeolas to Barangay Balog. It is made up of a rock causeway and three bridges that connect the few barangays in Sorsogon City.

That being said, long drives can be exhausting but worthwhile nonetheless. Hustling and bustling of the central cities will be completely expunged from your mind upon arrival in this trivialized province. They serve picture-postcard sceneries surrounded with evergreens and exhilarating beaches that oversee the clean shorelines.  If you’ve never been to the place, this might help you create your jump-packed and exciting itinerary. Here’s our 5 recommended best must-visit spots in Sorsogon City.

SORSOGON ROMPEOLAS (Sorsogon, Baywalk)

Rimpulas – as people call it, is the Sorsogon Business and Leisure Park. Its memories span decades, if not a century. Significantly progressed from a garbage dump a few years ago to what it is now – Baywalk. Food-carts and street vendors are permitted to sell their wares, which primarily consist of snacks and freshly fried fish balls or squid balls. This is extremely convenient for visitors. As time goes by, the area has filled with local affordable eateries and simple restaurants. Across is a park people usually hang out with their family and friends. Furthermore, having these generates some revenue for the vendors. You might want to take a stroll while holding a stick of street food. Maybe just sit beside the coast with your company while enjoying the sunrise or the sunset.

There is also a nearby Lighthouse nearby with an overlooking view that shows you the rest of the relaxing environment. Rompeolas Lighthouse illuminates the surroundings in a full-blown romantic atmosphere at night. You might also wanna try passing by this breezy and aesthetically pleasing hanging bridge.

MUSEO SORSOGON (Alegre, Sorsogon City)

DA previously vacated century-old provincial jail and courthouse in the province of Sorsogon. It has been converted into a neo-classical grandiose museum showcasing the province’s and its people’s rich history and culture. The Sorsogon Museum and Heritage Center was the province’s first museum which opened on June 26, 2008. Commemorating the province’s centennial founding anniversary in October 1894.

Provincial Governor Chiz Escudero decided to build a new museum within the grounds of the Sorsogon City capitol compound. He started soon as the new penitentiary was completed and the inmates were transferred in 2019. Since then, the provincial government immediately began renovating the historical building, preserving the jail cells as galleries to showcase Sorsogon’s rich history and culture.

With the arrival of a new provincial administration in 2019, the old Museum was closed and renovated to house the Department of Tourism’s provincial office. On March 12, 2021, Governor Francis “Chiz” Escudero and Dr. Rene Escalante inaugurated a new “Museo Sorsogon”. Ten galleries on the two-story museum will display important historical and cultural aspects of the province. Such as the beginning of communities in Sorsogon, its participation in the Philippine revolution, and the subsequent American occupation.

RIZAL BEACH RESORT (Barangay Rizal, Gubat, Sorsogon City)

Sorsogon strived to get appreciation towards the years. Luckily, they have progressed started gaining attention recently. Its striking beaches with sparkling waters and sands are the reasons why locals and even foreigners come back. Rizal Beach in Gubat is Sorsogon’s only beach in the center of a cove. The miles of golden sand surrounding an extensive shoreline makes it one of the best pristine beaches in the Philippines. The clean white shore equally complements the clear azure seawater. Huge surfing waves enthrall swimmers and surfers. This tropical paradise is known as a picnic and bathing spot.

Rizal Beach Resort is situated in the municipality of Gubat, which is around 25 minutes away from the City of Sorsogon. Going there from the city might take a while but you wouldn’t notice it as you’ll be occupied in awe of the view on the road – towering the sides with tall coconut trees and evergreens.   In here you can also find hand-made souvenirs made of nylon strings and shells. Varying from accessories to house decorations. Surely enough, the craftsmanship being showcased by the locals are adding them extra profit and recognition that they truly deserve.

CHURCH OF NAZARENE (Layog, Barcelona)

Barcelona Church or (Church of Nazarene) is one of the oldest neo-classical churches in Bicol. During the Spanish colonization, it became the refuge for homesick Spaniards. They named the place “Barcelona” to pay tribute to the then capital of Spain. The monumental church was built dating back to 1874 by Governadorcillo Juan Evasco. In fact, the locals claimed that the church has never been altered and is standing on its original facade. The structure was surprisingly made of coral rocks, adding such unique history it already has.

The interior has multi-layered high ceilings and old huge chandeliers. Similar to the common Filipino-Spanish churches. Brown wooden long chairs with platforms people kneel on while praying are all lined up. But even with chandeliers, the inside is just luminated enough by the natural lighting as huge glass-stained windows are all around the sides. Just the typical churches you can find in the country. Unfortunately, they used to allow people to go up the bell tower to have a sight of the rest of Barcelona. They closed it for safety protocols. The parish is still taken care of as of now and very well kept. Some locals and parishioners are cleaning and maintaining the church’s grounds.

CASIGURAN PIER (Casiguran, Sorsogon)

Casiguran was significantly Sorsogon’s first missionary parish, established in 1600. It is thought to be derived from the Bicol phrase Kasi gurang , which means “mostly old”. It depicts the fact that it was the first parish and thus populated by senior citizens. According to legend, the town was named “Casiguran” because all young men and ladies were kept hidden. Furthermore, only old people could be seen in the town. In contrast to the present days, this place has become one of the famous spots in Sorsogon for both locals and visitors.

Humble boats fishing in the waters of Sorsogon Bay use Casiguran’s port. However, it is also well-known for its stunning sunset views of the bay area. Children and their parents would flock to the port later in the day to catch the sunset and the early evening breeze. You can also see a huge Statue of Mama Mary holding Sto. Nino exactly 308 steps from the port. This 71 foot-tall statue of Mama Mary has become one of the main attractions in the area.

What else you can do at Sorsogon

Furthermore, try to list down all of these if you’re looking for more activities:

Subic Beach is not your typical beach with white sands and clear turquoise waters. The sands in Subic Beach have a unique pink hue that results from the remains of tiny red corals and shells.

There are two separate segments of Subic Beach, which locals call Subic Laki (Bigger Subic) and Subic Liit (Smaller Subic). Both segments feature fine white sands with complimenting clear waters, fringed with tall palm trees.

While the sands and the sea waters look inviting to plunge in, swimming can be difficult for non-swimmers because of strong waves. For the experienced swimmers, you can, however, snorkel at the less deep parts.

You can still enjoy the picturesque ambiance of Subic Beach, though. The long stretch of white and pink sands is a sight itself to relax and meditate.

There are few developments on the island, starting from cottages and nipa huts for rent. When planning to stay the whole day, it is ideal for bringing your cooked foods or bringing provisions for some beach barbeque party.

When planning for an overnight stay, camping on the island is also allowed.

11. Tikling Island

Tikling Island is a tiny island off from the pier of Matnog. The sands here feature white and pink hues, fringed with dense vegetation with no structural developments.

Aside from Calintaan Island, Tikling Island in Matnog also attracts tourists for its charming and unspoiled beauty.

Tikling Island is a tiny private island featuring a fine and white shoreline enveloped with turquoise sea waters. Like Subic Beach, the sands in Tikling also share a pink hue, which adds to the island’s natural wonders.

Tikling also shares a pink hue, which adds to the island’s natural wonders. On the contrary, Tikling Island has no other developments like resorts and cottages. The thick vegetation, however, can provide enough shade during your break from exploring the island. A day tour is only allowed as well.

Nevertheless, a quick trip to the island is enough to experience true island life from your Sorsogon tourist spots escapades, even just for a couple of hours.

Swimming and snorkeling at Tikling are possible, thanks to its calm and shallow shores. There are also rock formations at the beach end where you can pose for some dramatic portraits for the ‘gram.

12. Irosin Hotsprings

tourist spot in castilla sorsogon

Relieve your aching muscles and veins after your long hours of island hopping or hiking at some hot springs in Irosin. Irosin is known for its hot and cold spring waters in Sorsogon and the Bicol region.

Irosin is the only landlocked town in Sorsogon province, where foothills occupy the northern borders. Its proximity to the active volcano permits hot groundwaters, while its valley serves as a collection point for running cold waters from the mountains.

Include some hot springs in your Sorsogon tourist spots itinerary and spend some of your time pampering and relaxing. Locals believe in the healing attributes of the geothermal waters while the cold spring balances the experience, especially during the summer months.

Some of the resorts in Irosin are Mateo Hot and Cold Spring Resort, Nature Spring Resort and Inn, Tropical Hot Spring Paradise, and 401 K Resort. These resorts also offer accommodations for guests who want to have an overnight experience.

13. Bigaho Eco Park

tourist spot in castilla sorsogon

A new attraction emerges in Prieto Diaz, which offers nature-centered site seeing among other Sorsogon tourist spots. The Bigaho Eco Park in Barangay Talisayen advocates for recreational nature engagement with its expansive mangrove forest.

Bigaho Eco Park features a long 750-meter bamboo bridge for trekking from the main entrance and crossing in the middle of the mangrove forest. At the end is an islet with rock formations, where you can mesmerize by the cold breeze of the ocean after the long trail.

An ideal vantage point of the Albay Gulf and Mayon Volcano also provides an excellent backdrop for your mandatory selfies and souvenir landscape photos.

Camping at the park is allowed, and they also offer paluto for tourist who wishes for a taste of local food.

The mangrove protects the villages in the area from storm surges and acts as sanctuaries for fishes and other marine life forms.

Bigaho comes from the name of a local grass in Sorsogon, used for local handicrafts.

14. Botong Twin Falls

Aside from the beaches and island Sorsogon tourist spots, there are also impressive falls in Sorsogon, and among them is the Botong Twin Falls. Botong Twin Falls is located in Osiao, Bacon District in Sorsogon City.

The twin falls are known to have remarkable differences despite their proximity to each other. One waterfall reflects greenish hues while the other has a bluish color, which locals fondly call Blue and Green Falls.

You might wonder about trekking and hiking first before reaching a waterfall. Worry not when you plan to visit Botong Twin Falls because it is right beside a road.

The Botong Twin Falls is within the property of the PNOC-Bacman Geothermal Plant. While the attraction is open to the public, coordination and securing permission into the power company is a must first.

15. Sorsogon Coastal Road

tourist spot in castilla sorsogon

The Sorsogon coastal road is a newly opened infrastructure development in Sorsogon City that provides an alternative and efficient route.

The coastal road has a length of 5.52 kilometers, including a rock causeway and three bridges. Aside from being an alternative route, the four-lane highway also protects against storm surges that may damage the nearby areas during weather disturbances.

When you’re staying or passing by Sorsogon City, don’t forget to visit the new coastal road. Its long stretch provides a different view to admire Sorsogon Bay during the day or when chasing sunsets.

The highway also has a dedicated jogging lane that adds value and promotes a safe space for recreational activities for locals and visitors in the province.

During the night, the Sorsogon coastal road is well lit and looks stunning during the daytime.

ABOUT SEE & DO EAT & DRINK STAY BUDGET ADVICE

Travel Insurance

Sorsogon City is the capital of Sorsogon Province , one of the six provinces in Bicol Region .  It borders Sorsogon Bay in the south and Albay Gulf in the north.  The city is one of the centers for urbanization, trade, and commerce not only in the province but the whole Bicol Region.

While it is not as popular as other tourist destinations in the province such as Donsol where you can swim with the whale sharks or Bulusan where you can jump off your exploration of Bulusan Volcano National Park, Sorsogon City has its own natural formations and manmade spots that attract tourists, both local and foreign.

This brief guide to Sorsogon City will help you plan your trip. It contains information on what to do, eat, and drink as well as the must-see spots and the best hotels.

Sorsogon City

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Sorsogon City summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Sorsogon City in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

A little over 1 kilometer from Sorsogon City port, Sorsogon Capitol building is the seat of government of the province of Sorsogon.  The century-old building has recently been restored and modern facilities have been added for the comfort of everyone.  Its hallways house paintings done by local artists.  Outside the building is a large park that features a domed concrete kiosk where concerts and other events are held.  The park also offers relaxing views filled with lush greenery courtesy of trees and plants in the area.

2 | Museo Sorsogon

Walking distance from Sorsogon Capitol is Museo Sorsogon which showcases the history and culture of Sorsogon.  The two-storey building was once the old Provincial Jail that has been converted to house 10 galleries to accommodate all the paintings and art pieces as well as old photos, coins, tools, and other items related to the colorful past of Sorsogon.

3 | Busay Falls

Found amidst the thick forests in Guinlajon, Sorsogon City is Busay Falls.  Reaching this hidden gem requires a tricycle or jeepney ride from the heart of the city and a short hike to get to the falls.  The water drops into a natural pool with large and slippery boulders so be careful.

4 | Botong Twin Falls

Approximately 10 kilometers from the heart of the city is Bacon District where Botong Twin Falls is located.  The natural attraction features two waterfalls standing close to each other, hence the name.  In addition to its charm, Botong Twin Falls is considered one of the top ecotourism attractions in the city as it is located within the Bacman Ecopark where the EDC-Bacman Geothermal Plant, a Butterfly Farm, and a mini zoo are also located.

5 | Mt. Pulog

Mt. Pulog, also in Bacon, is a forested mountain with its peak at 1020 meters above sea level.  It faces the Pacific Ocean and features a lake at the summit.  Can be completed in 3 to 4 hours, Mt. Pulog is one of the best destinations in the Bicol Region for a day hike.

7 | Libanon Beach

The southern and northern parts of Sorsogon City are dotted with beaches – one of which is the Libanon Beach in the northern part.  The beach features fine black sand said to have originated from the eruptions of Mount Mayon .  The beach offers several activities including surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, and many others.

8 | Mt. Cabanbanan

If Mt. Pulog isn’t enough, you can also add Mt. Cabanbanan to your itinerary.  It was opened to the public in 2020 to help people deal with anxiety and stress caused by the pandemic.  With its peak at approximately 600 meters above sea level, Mt. Cabanbanan is perfect for day hikes but cottages for overnight stay are also being offered.

9 | Paguriran Island and Lagoon

It isn’t actually an island but a group of corals and rock islet off the coast of Bacon.  It is connected to the mainland by a sandbar and can be accessed by foot.  You can walk on the sandbar during low tide but you need to wade through the waist-deep water during high tide.  The rocks and corals form a lagoon perfect for swimming when the tide is high.

10 | Nearby destinations

One of the most sought-after tourism destinations in Sorsogon is the town of Donsol where you can swim with the whalesharks .  It is approximately 78 kilometers away from the city.  Bulusan Volcano National Park is closer, being just less than 55 kilometers away.  Other destinations in Sorsogon province include the beaches in Matnog and Gubat, and Pili Haven and hot springs in Irosin.

Suggested Budget

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.    AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB .

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly.

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys ) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips.

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option.

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

We recommend booking online to save money using:  Skysca n ner ,  momondo ,  Kayak ,  kiwi.com .

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter.

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

The following is some of our best advice on traveling to Sorsogon City .  Learn what you need to know BEFORE you go!

Tips & Hacks

he following are our Top 10 Tips when visiting this destination in the Philippines:

  • Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
  • Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
  • Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
  • Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
  • Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
  • Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
  • It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
  • Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
  • Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
  • Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Sorsogon City , you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Consult your hotel or resort front desk as they are more likely to give you reliable information than a random stranger on the street. Be careful when approaching strangers and selective about who you approach. Always pay attention to your gut feeling and follow it.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling in Sorsogon City or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

Also known as the “exit point” of Luzon, many travelers pass by Sorsogon on their way to various other destinations. However, many of them stay hooked with the province itself! Why is it? Just check out some of these top tourist spots in Sorsogon to know the answer.

Top Tourist Spots in Sorsogon

Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Sorsogon, Philippines

Known around the country for its whale shark-watching opportunities, the municipality of Donsol has been featured as Asia’s Best Animal Encounter by Time Magazine back in 2004. Go here between November and June for the one-of-a-kind experience of getting up close and personal with these gentle giants! While you’re here, don’t miss the not-so-well-known but equally mesmerizing firefly tour. These are just two of the top tourist spots in Sorsogon found in Donsol.

Lake Bulusan

This lake is found in Bulusan Volcano National Park , around ten kilometers from Irosin. The lake, aside from its natural beauty, is also at the heart of a tropical rainforest sporting a wide variety of flora and fauna. If you’d like to go trekking, camping, or jungle hiking, this is a good place to start.

Tourist Spots in Sorsogon: Lake Bulusan

Tikling Island

Located in Matnog, this is a privately-owned island that is open for day trips. One of the most unspoiled locations in this side of the country, Tikling is covered in a lush green cover and has almost no man-made structures! If you’d like to disconnect, the island is a great destination.

Saint Joseph Parish / Barcelona Church

St. Joseph is locally known as Barcelona Church, and is one of the country’s many ancient churches (being built in 1874). Beautiful and stately (though the Presidencia ruins on the other side of the church lies more on nostalgic), it’s one half of Barcelona’s pair of tourist attractions. The other one is Barcelona Beach, a simple and wind-swept coastline that’s a perfect place to sit down, rest, and even take a short dip while on a stopover!

Subic Beach

Yes, we’re still in Sorsogon! This is another of Matnog’s treasures, a beautiful stretch of fine white sand under the shade of trees. Actually, there are two Subic Beaches — one called “big” and the other called “small”. It’s not one of those commercialized beaches where you can rent all sorts of things, but you can enjoy an amazing view of nature and a relaxing dip in its deep blue waters.

Hot and Cold Springs of Irosin

Some towns in the Philippines are famous for their hot springs, but Irosin one-ups them all with its hot and cold springs! The road leading to the Mateo springs don’t look like they’re going to a tourist attraction, developed as they are with residential properties. The springs themselves have also been developed in a resort, but you can still feel the naturally-produced temperatures from the springs. There are actually several smaller springs here aside from the two big ones, and most have varying temperatures. The hottest ones here can effortlessly cook an egg!

Sorsogon really holds its own when you consider its beautiful attractions. Hopefully, these top tourist spots in Sorsogon can sway you to give this charming province a visit!

How to get to Sorsogon

There is currently no commercial airport in Sorsogon Province. The closest airport is in Legazpi, Albay. From there, you can take a bus or van to any points in Sorsogon. If you are coming from Manila, you can take a bus to Sorsogon or hop on a bus bound for Eastern Visayas or Mindanao. From Mindanao, there are buses going to Manila that you can take and just alight in Sorsogon.
