How to Get a Cuba Visa (Tourist Card)

Visitors to Cuba from pretty much every country in the world will need a visa to visit Cuba.

Known as officially as a “Tourist Visa Card” there are two types of Cuba Visas – a green tourist card and a pink tourist card.

A pink tourist card applies to anyone flying to Cuba from the United States and it costs over $100.

The good news for travellers flying from Cancun to Cuba is you only need a green visa which costs much less.

There are two ways to get a Cuba visa in Mexico:

1. Buy an Interjet Tourist Card for Cuba at the Airport

You can purchase a Cuba visa at the airport from the Airline customer service counter.

The price is around 250 mxp ($13) which is the cheapest Cuba visa around.

That said, the thought of being denied entry to Cuba because things have changed, or simply because Mexican authorities don’t have enough forms on the day worried me.

So, I called our airline Interjet to inquire about whether we could buy a Cuba Visa from the airport in Mexico City ahead of time.

We were told we couldn’t do this but we were reassured it would be no problem at all buying a visa from Interjet at check-in in Cancun.

Fast forward 2 weeks and we found ourselves without a visa as we arrived to check-in to our flight. As we approached the line an Interjet staff member asked (in English) for our Cuba Visa.

When we said we didn’t’ have one he whipped out one which we could purchase for 400 MXP or $25 USD (cash only).

He then took our passports and wrote in our information which is great because it’s  his problem if he writes the information incorrectly and needs to start again.

So we can tell you first-hand as of February 2020, it’s perfectly safe to buy an Interjet Cuba Visa at Cancun Airport.

2. Buy Cuba Visa Online

If you think buying a Cuba visa at the airport seems risky – we share(d) your thoughts.

The cheapest way to get a Cuba visa is from this agent .

You simply enter your details into the form and they will send you a Visa within 1 business day.

Note this only applies for visitors (including US citizens) travelling from Mexico.

If you’re travelling from a US airport you will need to obtain a pink tourist card from a Cuban embassy .

Essential Information for Visiting Havana

Entry Requirements include the aforementioned Tourist Card, which allows you to stay in the Cuba for 30 days and is valid for only a single entry.

You will also need to have:

  • A passport valid for 2 months beyond the length of your proposed visit.
  • Proof of a confirmed return flight and booked accommodation.
  • Proof of accommodation for at least the 1st night in Cuba.
  • Travel insurance which covers medical expenses.

Remember, June is the rainiest month in Cuba – so be sure to pack the umbrella! Read about the best time to visit Cuba .

Here’s a fun fact about flying into Cuba: shortly before landing cabin stewards walk down the aisle to spray bug spray into the air to decontaminate the plane before landing.

This aircraft disinfection” is a stipulation of the World Health Organization for inbound aircraft to Cuba.

It won’t hurt and won’t kill you, so don’t be alarmed. At least now you know what they’re doing and why.

Havana Airport to Havana City

After arriving in Havana Airport and passing through immigration, head straight our the doors and turn left. Ignore all the touts offering you

About 100 metres away you will see a rank of yellow taxis which are the official taxis in Havana. Before jumping in a taxi make sure to agree on the fare because meters are not usually used.

A taxi from Havana Airport to Havana centro costs between 25 – 30 CUC (pesos cubano convertible) which is roughly $25 – 30 USD. The drive from the airport to Havana is about 30 minutes.

We paid $30 cuc for a maxi-taxi for four people to Vedado which is a suburb 10 minutes drive from Havana Vieja (aka Old Town).

For the return journey from Havana Old Town to Havana Airport we paid $20 cuc. Next time we visit Havana, if there’s just the two of us we’ll try to negotiate $20 cuc for a taxi to the center of town.

These are the best hotels near Cancun Airport with a free airport shuttle:

Courtyard by Marriott Cancun Airport : The closest hotel to Cancun Airport. Restaurant & Gym. Free shuttle to it’s beach club.

Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott : Second closest hotel to Cancun Airport. Restaurant & Gym.

Things to do in Cuba

Visiting Havana was the highlight of our time in Cuba. Walking the old town feels like you’ve fallen into a time machine set to 1940s. It’s amazing.

A few bucket list activities you can’t miss (which we’ve taken from our list of the 50 best things to do in Havana ) are:

  • take a city tour in a classic American car (preferably a pink convertible)
  • sip a Mojito or Cuba Libre in one of the famous hotels frequented by stars of the 40s including Frank Sinatra, Errol Flynn, and the writer whose now famous for drinking at bars from Paris to Havana to Key West: Ernest Hemingway
  • take a day trip to Vinales where you can ride horseback and roll a Cuban cigar

Riding in a pink vintage car around Havana Old Town is an essential activity on every Cuba itinerary

Where to Stay when you get to Cuba?

There are not many hotels in Cuba and the ones that are there are run by the government.

If you choose not to stay at one of these hotels, your other option is to stay in a Casa Particular aka someone’s apartment.

While this is a fun and very local experience, for Western comforts we would recommend booking one of the few hotels in Cuba, especially if it is your first time visiting:

  • Hotel National De Cuba – a clean and comfortable 5 star hotel in Havana
  • Hotel Plaza – a beautiful 4 star hotel in Havana Cuba
  • Hotel Carribean – a budget, air conditioned hotel in Havana

Read our guide for to get the run down on the best neighborhoods in Havana plus tried and tested hotels where the wifi actually works.

Yes this means wifi in Casa Particulars rarely works, no matter what the Airbnb reviews say based on our personal experience after spending hours trying to find a good Airbnb with wifi.

This is so helpful! Thank you! Do you happen to know if US passport holders flying from CUN-HAV qualify for the green tourist card? I am planning a trip for December and would love to know if I can get the visa I need in Mexico or if my US passport will require a pink card.

Thanks again! Happy travels :)

Saturday 25th of December 2021

Hi there, thanks for the great information here. I’m wondering if you know a way to currently book airfare from Cancun to Havana. Since we are in the United States, none of the booking sites will allow me to book this leg of the trip because of “regulatory reasons.” I’m willing to book the tickets once we are in Cancun, but of course worry about not being able to get such a last minute flight. Any info would be great. Thank you!

Great review and detail.....but for whatever reason when we were looked we simply could not get flights from Cancun to Havana. The airline you recommend looks like it is now bankrupt and other airlines don't seem to have service.

Hi Mark, oh you are right Interjet has now folded. Thank you for that information, we will update the article. What you are experiencing seems to be a problem for many travelers during COVID. Did you find any solution? We would love to update the article if you did.

Cuba tours beyond the beach.

The island of Cuba – with its vibrant rhythms, varied landscape, and rich heritage of literature and dance – wins over many travellers, who return again and again. Cuba's travel opportunities differ from those in other Latin American countries, and though the country has been a magnet for sun-seeking tourists for some time, it is only slowly opening up to less-traditional travel. A Cuba trip provides an opportunity to explore this uniquely beautiful and captivating land and meet its friendly and open people.

Day 1 Mexico

Upon arrival in Mexico City, you will be met and transferred to your hotel for your check in.  The remainder of the day is at leisure.

If arriving prior to standard check-in time, which is generally 3pm local time, you are welcome to leave your luggage with hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available, as there are no scheduled activities on Day 1 of the itinerary. The hotel may grant early check-in, however this is strictly subject to availability and at the hotels discretion.

Day 2 Mexico City Teotihuacan Mexico City

After breakfast, we’ll begin the day with a guided visit to the National Museum of Anthropology. Of particular interest is the Aztec calendar engraved in a round stone by the ancient civilisation. We’ll continue to the archaeological site of Teotihuacan for a closer look at the Aztecs, and learn more about their history, culture, and beliefs. We’ll end the day with a city tour, working our way back into the heart of the city, visiting the main square, The Plaza de la Constitución (or better known to locals as the Zócalo), the cathedral which is over 200-years-old and the Presidential Palace.

Day 3 Mexico City Puebla & Cholula Mexico City

After breakfast we’ll head east to the colonial city of Puebla, full of beautiful colonial architecture, hundreds of intricately ornate churches, and arguably the gastronomic capital of Mexico. On the way, there will be a stop in Cholula, where we’ll visit the town’s archaeological site of the same name which is also home to the largest pyramid in the world (by volume). Also not to be missed is the beautiful church of Santa María Tonantzintla which is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin.

Day 4 Mexico City Havana

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Cuba.

Welcome to colourful Havana! You will be met at the airport and transferred to your guest house. Once you’ve checked in, use the rest of the day as you wish: explore the neighbourhood, get a bite to eat or rest. This evening, you’ll meet your tour leader and the rest of the group at La Gargola Guesthouse at 7pm for an optional group dinner in Old Havana.

Day 5 Havana

This morning we’ll set off on a walking tour of Old Havana, taking in the main attractions plus some hidden gems only known to the locals. Make sure you have comfortable shoes on!

This afternoon we’ll head out on a drive in an open top, classic American car, visiting the neighbourhoods of Central Habana, Vedado, and Miramar just outside of Old Havana. We’ll visit Plaza de la Revolución (Revolution Square), stopping to appreciate the huge images of the revolutionary heroes Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos, and the scene of many speeches by Fidel Castro. The square is dominated by the José Martí Memorial, which features a 109-metre-tall tower and an 18- metre-tall statue, the National Library and many government offices are also found here.

Day 6 Havana Jaimanitas Viñales

We’ll depart Havana for Viñales after breakfast, stopping at the village of Jaimanitas to see the Gaudi-inspired community project, Fusterlandia. Named after the project’s founder and artist, José Rodríguez Fuster (also known as the ‘Picasso of the Caribbean’), Fuster converted his own home into an art museum by adorning it with mosaic tiles in the 70s, and over time, his neighbours offered their homes up to him to do the same. Every surface, from street signs to communal benches, have been decorated by Fuster himself or community members. We’ll wander around Fuster’s home and also have time to view the colourful streets of this neighbourhood. We’ll continue our drive towards the mountains and the province of Pinar del Rio.

The town of Viñales, approximately 2.5 hours from Fusterlandia, is one of Cuba's most picturesque towns in this province and is the gateway to the Sierra de los Organos mountains and Viñales Valley. The valley is surrounded by steep limestone hills, and the floor of the valley is a UNESCO heritage site. Farmers here still use traditional methods, either using oxen or by hand, to till the earth. The main crops are rice, corn, root vegetables (yuca, boniato, and malanga), and most famously some of Cuba's best tobacco.

We’ll wander around the town, then learn how to make an iconic mojito, one of the most popular tipples in Cuba. Later in the afternoon we’ll have a salsa dance lesson to prepare us for a night out in this exciting town.

Day 7 Viñales

This morning we’ll take a walk around the UNESCO area of the Viñales Valley where we’ll observe  different farming activities and visit some farm houses, including a tobacco farmer who will talk us through the process of producing the tobacco used in Cuba's world renowned cigars.

Come evening, we’ll visit an organic farm which has a spectacular view of the valley, the perfect spot to watch the sun go down while enjoying a sumptuous group dinner.

Day 8 Viñales Bay of Pigs Cienfuegos

Today we’ll drive from Viñales along the Caribbean coast, to the city of Cienfuegos, which used to be known as the ‘Pearl of the South.’ Settled by the French and still containing traces of their influence, Cienfuegos is also known to be one of the most beautiful villages in Cuba. We’ll make a stop at the Bay of Pigs along the way, known as an excellent snorkelling spot, which can be enjoyed straight off the coast. Snorkelling gear is available to hire cheaply, but if water activities aren’t your thing, wander around and enjoy the natural scenery.

Arriving at Cienfuegos, you’ll notice French influences everywhere, especially around the main square and a very pretty boulevard that runs from the city centre, along the edge of the bay and to the end of the peninsula.

At the end of the peninsula, you'll find Palacio del Valle, a mansion built in 1913 by Italian architect, Alfredo Colli. The architectural style is a mixture but what is clear is that a great deal of expense went into its construction and decoration, and the result is nothing short of spectacular. It’s been bought and sold as a private home, a high-scale hotel and restaurant, and in 2000, it was declared a National Monument.

Day 9 Cienfuegos Trinidad

Today we bid farewell to Cienfuegos and drive approximately 1.5 hours to Trinidad, one of Cuba's most exciting cities. Its small and compact size means that attractions within the city can easily be visited on foot. Trinidad was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988, but the beauty of this open-air museum  hasn’t been destroyed by over-tourism, t he spirit (and architecture) of the city still resembles 1850.

We’ll experience a fun, interactive music and percussion lesson with a local maestro of music. This is a true highlight of the tour and a fantastic way to learn more about Cuban music, dance and rhythm, an integral part of the country’s culture.

We’ll end the day with a relaxing cocktail at sunset as a group, and then you’ll have the option of joining your tour leader and the group on an exploration of the city after dark, or if you prefer, go it alone and spend the evening as you wish. Trinidad is known for its lively nightlife and there are plenty of open air restaurants, bars, live music venues and dance shows to keep you entertained.

Day 10 Trinidad

This morning we have some free time to further explore town.  For the more adventurous, there is an optional 3-hour return hike to a beautiful waterfall in the nearby mountains. Speak to your tour leader for more information.

Later, we head to Ancón Beach for the day where 4km of white sand and turquoise water await. You can spend the day as you wish — there are more than 30 dive sites off Ancón, including Cayo Blanco, an island surrounded by coral reefs; deep-sea fishing and snorkelling, or of course, just enjoy the Caribbean sun and water and have a leisurely lunch at one of the luxe hotels. Your tour leader is happy to provide you with some recommendations.

Tonight’s dinner will be at a local paladare , a small, family-run restaurant. From here we will head out together to one of the many venues around Trinidad to listen to live Cuban music, from traditional to more modern salsa music.

Day 11 Trinidad Santa Clara Havana

On the 2-hour drive back to Havana, we will make a stop at Santa Clara to visit the Che Guevara Mausoleum located at Plaza Che Guevara. Che is an extremely controversial figure in Latin America and an immensely important one in Cuba's history. His remains were found in Bolivia and brought here to rest in 1990, along with 29 fellow combatants. There is a huge bronze statue of El Che, an eternal flame, and many of his personal items on display.

We will also make a stop for lunch on the way back to Havana.

Tonight is our final evening together. You’ll have the choice to dine together as a group with the tour leader, or spend the evening exploring and dining as you wish.

Day 12 Havana Cancun Playa del Carmen

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Cancun.

Welcome back to Mexico. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel in the seaside town of Playa del Carmen.  The remainder of the day is free to relax.

Day 13 Playa del Carmen Tulum Playa del Carmen

After breakfast we’ll set out for the archaeological site of Tulum.  Among all Mayan cities, this is unique as it’s the only one built right next to the ocean which provides a striking contrast between the rock of the pyramids and the turquoise blue waters of the Mexican Caribbean. After a guided visit of the main areas of the site, we’ll take a swim in the refreshing waters of a nearby cenote, a naturally forming limestone sinkhole that was considered sacred by the Mayan people.

Day 14 Playa del Carmen Chichén Itzá Playa del Carmen

After breakfast, we’ll visit Chichén Itzá, one of the most important Mayan sites and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Learn about this magnificent archaeological gem and more about the Mayan people: their knowledge about the stars and universe, numbers and architecture, and their history, culture, and beliefs. Following the visit to Chichén Itzá, we’ll continue to the colonial town of Valladolid, about 40 minutes away, before heading back to Playa del Carmen.

Day 15 Playa del Carmen Cancun

One last relaxing breakfast before transferring to the airport for your flight.

We hope you have been inspired by the people, culture and sights of Latin America.

Cuba Accommodation

Comfort Guesthouses - This category are B&B in style, and cannot compare to the comfort levels of a modern western hotel. However every comfort room has modern air-conditioning, an ensuite bathroom, a window to the outside or to an interior courtyard with natural light, it also includes modern imported mattresses, and cold and hot water.

While these are our minimum requirements for Comfort rooms, every Comfort casa is different, and has its own unique charms. Many rooms (but not all) have a security box, mini-bar fridge, and hair dryer. The guesthouses offer flexibility, local character, and opportunity to meet local families and everyday Cubans. We will most likely use a number of different houses depending on the group size. Most guesthouses have 2-4 rooms for guests. For our tour groups, we chose one of the houses as a “Base House” or (central house) which typically has more rooms and a nice area for the group to meet. We use this house as an arrival and departure point for the group, and as a meeting point for any excursions or activities with the tour guide.

Tour participants are distributed to different casas situated within a short walking distance of the Base House. Family members from those houses collect tour participants from the Base House. Typically between 1 and 4 group members will stay in each casa.

  • International Flights
  • Visa and passport fees
  • Insurance (Travel Medical Insurance is required to participate on the tour)
  • Optional activities/day tours/excursions

Day 1 - Havana : Arrival

Arrival On arrival at the airport you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel in a classic American car. Havana, Cuba's colourful capital, is like no other place on earth. The minute you step outside the airport you will know exactly what we are talking about - the classic American cars, the cobbled streets, the fading, peeling paintwork, we guarantee that Havana will be one of the major highlights of your adventure.

Day 2 - Havana : Old & New Tour City Tour

Old & New Tour City Tour Today you will get acquainted with Cuba's capital city by taking a guided walking tour through the crumbling splendour of the UNESCO World Heritage listed site, Habana Vieja (Old Havana). Wars and revolution have done little to damage its heritage, making it one of the finest examples of a Spanish colonial city anywhere in the Americas. You will first enjoy a short walking tour around Old Havana including its most important squares and fortresses. You will then be picked up at the Plaza de Armas in your chauffeur-driven, classic American car for a scenic drive along the Malecón seafront to the elegant suburb of Miramar with a stop at Revolution Square. Finally we include a traditional Cuban lunch, a visit to the Ernest Hemingway museum and drop you off at your hotel. This evening is at your leisure. You might want to consider taking in a cabaret show at Havana's famous Tropicana nightclub, which boasts more than two hundred performers, a fabulous orchestra and astonishing acrobatic feats.

Breakfast and Lunch included.

Day 3 - Havana : Havana to Vinales

Havana to Vinales Today we'll travel into the Pinar del Rio province in the west of Cuba, and to the small town of Viñales, which possesses some of Cuba's most dramatic landscapes and is the world's best tobacco growing region. This beautiful, fertile valley is surrounded by unusual limestone outcrops known as ‘Mogotes'. A visit here is a great way of gaining an insight into rural Cuban life. In transit from Havana, you will enjoy a visit to a working tobacco farm where you will learn about the lifestyle of local peasants as well as about the growing of tobacco. In Viñales, we include a visit to the ‘Mural de Prehistorica' where a history of evolution is painted in bright colours on the side of a Mogote and an underground boat ride in the ‘Cueva del Indio', one of Viñales many fascinating caves. The afternoon is at your leisure and you'll find an abundance of opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast such as horse riding and hiking.

Day 4 - Vinales : Cayo Levisa Excursion

Cayo Levisa Excursion This morning you will be transferred to Palma Rubia to board a boat to Cayo Levisa which is not accessible by car. You have all day to enjoy mojitos and piña coladas on the beautiful beaches before returning to Vinales around 5 pm. Day trip to relax at one of the most beautiful beaches in Cuba. Early in the morning (8:00 h) until Palma Rubia. Continuation with a small boat to the island Cayo Levisa, once a popular fishing zone of Hemingway. Relax at the beautiful sandy beach or go on a snorkeling excursion (optional) or just enjoy the Caribbean scenery. In the late afternoon back to Vinales or spend the day at the Finca Lechuza. Next to a refreshing bank river there is this idyllic place to take a bath and a rustic restaurant.

Breakfast included.

Day 5 - Vinales : Vinales - Bay of Pigs - Cienfuegos

Vinales - Bay of Pigs - Cienfuegos This morning we transfer you to Cienfuegos, approximately an 5 hour drive southeast. Along the way, you'll have the opportunity to stop whenever you would like and there are several spectacular Caribbean beaches where you might like to enjoy a swim. Another stop will be at the historic Bay of Pigs where you’ll see the actual place where US forces landed during the 1961 invasion of Cuba as well as visiting a fascinating museum about the invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Australian's may be interested to stop in a small town along the way called Australia. On arrival in Cienfuegos you will check into your hotel, before enjoying lunch at a local restaurant (own expense). After lunch, your guide will take you on a walking tour of this laid back maritime city, known as the 'Pearl of the South', due to its lovely location on a picturesque Caribbean bay. Walk through the city’s well preserved colonial centre and learn about its proud musical tradition and its famous musicians, like Benny More. The evening is at your leisure. We recommend relaxing in your hotel pool or enjoying a drink on the rooftop terrace, which offers unsurpassed views of the city.

Day 6 - Cienfuegos : Travel to Trinidad

Travel to Trinidad This morning we'll transfer you to the town of Trinidad, which is often referred to as the Soul of Cuba. On arrival, we'll include a walking tour of the main sights of the city. The city was founded in 1514 by the Spanish conquistador Diego Velasquez and became a major centre for trading sugar and slaves for almost two hundred years. The wealth generated by the landowners during this region's dark past is reflected by the well restored colonial architecture found in Trinidad's colonial centre, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. After further walking the cobble stoned colonial heart of Trinidad, you should consider a drive out to Playa Ancón for beach time and perhaps even some scuba diving. Tonight we recommend you check out Casa de la Musica for some salsa dancing, before heading to the Disco Ayala, set in a cave and dinner in the private restaurant ‘Sol Ananda’ or ‘La Cubita’.

Day 7 - Trinidad : Day at Leisure

Day at Leisure Discover Trinidad and its surroundings (transport and guide at disposition). Recommendation: Dinner at the Paladar ‘Sol Ananda‘ or ‘La Cubita‘.

Day 8 - Trinidad : Trinidad to Cayo Santa Maria

Trinidad to Cayo Santa Maria Today we will transfer you to Cayo Santa Maria, an island paradise on the northern coast of Cuba where you will spend four days relaxing on its long, powder-white sand beaches lapped by warm, blue water. Along the way, we'll stop in the city of Santa Clara, a key location in the history of the Revolution. We visit three key historical sites, including the massive Che Guevara monument and mausoleum (closed on Mondays), his final resting place. Afternoon and evening at leisure.

Day 9 - Cayo Santa Maria : At Leisure

At Leisure Spend some leisure time with all meals and drinks included at your hotel. Cayo Santa Maria offers a secluded beach setting and one of the country's best kept secrets. With only seven resorts and no towns it remains largely development-free, and with more than 50kms of spectacular beaches is the perfect option if you prefer to lay back and relax on hammocks or beach chairs. The waters around the bays offer a variety of activities, including snorkelling, diving, sports fishing and even bird watching. You can find nearly two hundred species of birds here such as herons, ibis, pelicans, cormorants and oystercatchers.

Day 10 - Cayo Santa Maria : At Leisure

Day 11 - cayo santa maria : cayo santa maria to havana / arrive in mexico city.

Cayo Santa Maria to Havana A representative will pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to Havana airport for your departure flight. The drive will take approximately four hours, so if your flight is an early departure we will need to reduce your stay in Cayo Santa Maria by one night and replace this with a night in Havana.

Arrive in Mexico City On arrival at the airport you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel. Mexico City is quickly becoming a must-see destination in Central America with its revamped public spaces, exciting new culinary scene and buzzing downtown area. These combined with the city's historical elements make for what is sure to be a highlight of your trip.

Day 12 - Mexico City : City Tour

City Tour Today we will explore magnificent Mexico City, built by the Spanish on the ruins of Tenochtitlan, the old Aztec capital. The city's historical heart is its vast central square, or El Zocalo and on this tour you will have the opportunity to visit it along with the Metropolitan Cathedral, which is the largest church in all of Latin America. You'll drive along the famous boulevard Paseo de la Reforma, built during the short-lived reign of Emperor Maximilian to connect the main square and his castle in Chapultepec. You'll also visit the National Palace*, which hosts Diego Rivera's murals depicting the history of Mexico and is one of the oldest government seats in the world. Your last stop is the Museum of Anthropology**, where you will have some time to explore the treasures of the Aztec culture at one of the finest archaeological museums in the world. *Due to the change of residence of the President of Mexico and his family to the National Palace, visits to the National Palace, including the contemplation of Diego Rivera's murals, are not available for the time being. Instead it will be possible to visit Diego Rivera's Murals at the Ministry of Public Education or another venue. * **Please note that the Museum of Anthropology is closed on Mondays.

Day 13 - Mexico City : Teotihuacan Pyramids & Guadalupe Shrine

Teotihuacan Pyramids & Guadalupe Shrine Located 50-kilometres north-east of Mexico City are the 'must-see' archaeological ruins of Teotihuacan - the site of the massive Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon which dominate the skyline of the complex. This was once the country's biggest ancient city and capital of the Aztec people, who ruled over the largest empire in the pre-Hispanic era. Guarded by mountains, this magnificent city is thought to have been founded early in the 1st century AD and reached its peak around 500 AD, when its influence extended down to Guatemala and as far north as present-day Texas. With the help of a local guide we have time to stroll down ‘The Avenue of the Dead', uncover its many wonders and imagine what life must have been like nearly two thousand years ago. We will also visit the Basilica de Guadalupe, Latin America's most revered religious shrine, where the Virgin of Guadalupe is said to have appeared before an Indian named Juan Diego in 1531, and an image of her was miraculously emblazoned on his cloak. We will have time to explore the New Basilica de Guadalupe (the Old Basilica, built in 1700, is slowly sinking) and to see Juan Diego's cloak. After our exploration we return to Mexico City in the afternoon.

Day 14 - Mexico City : Depart Mexico City / Villahermosa Arrival / Ruins Tour

Depart Mexico City Our representative will pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to the airport for your departure flight.

Villahermosa Arrival On arrival at Villahermosa airport you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Palenque.

Ruins Tour Today we will visit the archaeological site of Palenque, a World Heritage Site, located 7km outside of the town of Palenque overlooking the swampy plains that stretch northward all the way to the Gulf coast. Palenque flourished between AD600 and 800, when its influence extended throughout the basin of the Usumacinta River. The site, surrounded by rainforest where toucans and howler monkeys live, is made up of some five hundred buildings spread over 15 sq km, of which only a few have been excavated. We will explore the magnificent ruins, including the Temple of the Inscriptions – the tallest and stateliest of Palenque's buildings, the Temple of the Sun – crowned with a prominent roof comb, The Palace – with its maze of corridors and rooms, and many other beautiful buildings

Day 15 - Palenque : Drive to Campeche via Isla Aguada and Edzna

Drive to Campeche via Isla Aguada and Edzna A representative will pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to Campeche. On the way stop at the Natural Reserve of Laguna de Terminos and at the small fishing village of Isla Aguada take a boat tour through the lagoon (aprox1,5hrs). On this trip, you will see plenty of Dolphins and if you are very lucky even the very shy manatees. Stop at an Island in the Lagoon and see the local flora and fauna. Continue towards Edzná, with its remarkable main temple and the large ball court. Continue towards Campeche and walking city tour of the historical center

Day 16 - Campeche : Travel to Merida via Uxmal & Kabah Ruins

Travel to Merida via Uxmal & Kabah Ruins You will be picked up from your hotel for a day tour and drive into the so called Puuc Region, which means “hilly landscape” in the Mayan language. Here you will find Uxmal and Kabah, two very interesting archaeological sites (UNESCO World Cultural Heritage). The Puuc culture exhibited a highly decorative expression in their architecture, and at Uxmal, besides the Pyramid of the Dwarf, you will see the Nun's Quadrangle and the Governor's Palace, among others, where beautiful stone relief masks and ceremonial patterns cover the façades, and in Kabah, you will be lead over an ancient Maya White Path “Sac-Beh”, to discover the kind of explosion in decor and stone art in the façade of Codz Pop temple full of amazing masks and patterns. Lunch will be eaten at a local restaurant near the sites. Late afternoon you will be transferred to your hotel in Merida.

Day 17 - Merida : Merida - Chichen Itza - Merida

Merida - Chichen Itza - Merida Today will be one of the highlights of your Mexican adventure as you enjoy a visit to the archaeological site of Chichen Itza, located 120km east of Merida. One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Chichen Itza is the best restored of Yucatan’s Mayan sites. While here we will explore the magnificent ruins set in a dense jungle, including: - Pyramid of Kukulcan, its height and striking geometric design the most prominent of this site. - The Great Ball Court, the largest and most impressive in Mesoamerica. - The Sacred Cenote, a natural well used for human sacrifice. At the end of the tour we will drive back to Merida Airport for your flight out.

Yucatan Peninsula options One of the advantages of our tailormade itineraries is the ability to change things to create your perfect holiday. You can choose to visit several destinations such as Tulum, Cancun, Playa del Carmen or head back to Merida. If you are thinking about Tulum, please be aware that you can stay at a beach resort or in town which is 20min drive from the beach. Speak to your travel designer for more information.

What our clients say

Jeanette Voas

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT

The staff at Cubania were very efficient and very professional throughout. Excellent time keeping and very quick to respond to any queries - we would recommend them.

Fantastic knowledge of country, excellent communication, superb organisation/recommendations and brilliant guides/staff. Probably one of our best holidays and certainly the most interesting.

We booked our first bike tour to Cuba through Cubania Travel and have nothing but good to say about their service. The booking process was smooth and everything promised to us was delivered.

What a wonderful trip. Mary and I loved it. Thank you so much to you and Carla for your outstanding organisation. In short, you excelled. Moreover Jorge and Frank were an absolutely brilliant team - world-class and as good as we have ever experienced anywhere in the world.

Incredible knowledge and guide from Cubania

Simone O'Reilly

Good trip, and a lot more tiring than you'd think in the heat... lots to see and a very varied and different environment. Needed more snacks really at the stops is my only suggestion, but there was plenty of water. The guide and his crew were very good.

I did a guided ebike tour with Cubania travelling out of Havana to the gorgeous Cuban countryside and down to the south coast. The guide was great fun and the whole trip was organised seamlessly. Loved riding round the back roads and up a few hills with an electronic boost!

Claire Boobbyer

If you are looking to get a glimpse of the real Cuba, cycling through it with an expert guide is the way to do it. I couldn't recommend Cubania tours more.

Hannah Goodwin

I took a group of pals to Cuba and Cubania organised the whole trip. Right through from pre-planning to conclusion, it went really well and it was FUN as well as a success. Happy Travellers. Thank you everyone at Cubania, well done!

Excellent, tailored to our individual wishes. Advice provided as requested.

Andrew Heald

We loved the itinerary that Cubania put together for our trip to Cuba. Our guide and driver were so helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. We discovered so much about Cuba's history and saw a lot of beautiful places. A real mixture of city culture and stunning countryside plus a very relaxed couple of days on Cayo Levisa.

9 Days | Travel to Cuba and experience the enthralling history of this fascinating Caribbean island.

Havana Buick in street

Experience the splendour of Cuba – a cobblestoned Caribbean gem where the rum is plentiful, the smiles infectious and dancing is essential. Join our Hola Cuba adventure and wind your way from sultry Havana and its crumbling churches, through the valleys and farms of Pinar del Rio, and on to the Afro-inspired beats of Trinidad. Along the way we’ve assembled a cast of Cuban characters to give you a proper welcome – tobacco farmers, expert chefs, local artists, historians and salsa dancers that understand where Cuba came from, where the country sits now and, more importantly, where it’s going.

Trip overview

  • Learn the local customs, folklore and beliefs behind Afro-Cuban religion as you’re welcomed into the homes of devoted residents on a colourful and unconventional Urban Adventure in Havana.
  • Relish a real garden-to-plate dining experience at a privately-owned organic eco-farm in picturesque Vinales – indulge in a variety of fresh produce all while gazing across sweeping views of the valley.
  • Receive a fascinating insight into the rise and fall of the charismatic and highly celebrated Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara at his mausoleum and museum in Santa Clara.
  • Experience Cuban hospitality and old-world charm in the coastal town of Trinidad. Wander through cobblestone streets among colourful colonial buildings and relax on the picturesque Playa Ancon.
  • Support the Cuban community by staying at privately-owned guesthouses, dining at home-grown restaurants, and gaining insider knowledge into Cuba’s history, thanks to the expertise of local guides.
  • The guesthouses (casas) we use are much nicer than your average Cuban dwelling and each room is unique. Regardless of where you stay, power cuts and breaks in hot water supply are sometimes unavoidable, as in any developing country – but we believe that this is all a part of the local experience. To help set your expectations correctly, please read the ‘Accommodation’ section of the Essential Trip Information.
  • Part of Cuba’s appeal is its old-fashioned style – this includes the banking systems. Funds in Cuba can be difficult to access. Please read our Essential Trip Information to be fully prepared.
  • Luxuries such as air conditioning, plush pillows, and fly screens, are often scarce. Part of the experience here is learning to appreciate everyday Cuban resourcefulness.
  • Internet access can be hard to come by, and when it's available it's often unreliable and expensive. Treat this as a great opportunity to take a break from modern devices and have a true holiday.
  • Cuba is different, and that's a big part of its allure. Things don't always go according to plan, and many things don't work the same way as back home. Patience and good humor will go a long way in this beautiful destination.
  • Due to licensing restrictions, only 1-night pre-tour accommodation may be requested. Post-tour accommodation cannot be offered.

Bienvenido a Cuba! Welcome to Cuba! Upon arrival, soak in the decaying beauty of Havana and the surreal feeling that you have entered a bygone era. This is a very historic time to visit Cuba, as the gates finally creak open to a country so long forbidden, an opportunity has arisen to support the Cuban people and explore their incredible country. As there are no activities planned until your important welcome meeting at 6 pm – why not take a stroll to get acquainted with Cuba’s capital, where vintage cars, plumes of cigar smoke, Neo-Gothic churches and Art Deco theatres come together in a unique mesh of histories. After your welcome meeting, enjoy dinner at a local paladar, a privately-owned restaurant and a great example of Cuba’s incremental shift to a more free-market economy. Paladar means ‘palate’ but the popular usage of the word to describe this kind of restaurant references a Brazilian soap opera popular in Cuba in the 1990s.

  • Comfortable guesthouse (1 night)
  • Complimentary Arrival Transfer

The arrival transfer is only valid if arriving on Day 1 or if you have booked pre-trip accommodation through Intrepid. Please provide your flight details at the time of booking, or at a minimum 14 days prior to travel, as we may not be able to confirm a request made within 14 days of travel.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).

We have recently renamed the accommodation style on this trip to better reflect the different standards of accommodation we use across our different trip styles in Cuba. The standard of accommodation on this trip has not changed.

This morning, find out more about the local customs, folklore and beliefs of Cuba’s Afro-Cuban religion from an insider on a colourful and unconventional tour with Urban Adventures. Be welcomed into private homes and take the opportunity to learn from the devoted residents as you explore one of Havana’s sub-cultures at a grassroots level, something not often experienced by tourists. Next, you’ll get to see outer Havana in a convoy of classic American vintage cars. Cruise via points of interest – such as the Malecon, Revolution Square, Avenida de los presidentes and ending in Old Havana. Next, your leader will take you on a walking tour around the charming neighbourhood of Old Havana (approximately 2.5 hours). The best place to start any Havana experience is in the Old City, which is one of the best-preserved towns and in 1982 was designated a World Heritage Site. The streets are lined with colonial architecture, 16th-century fortresses and countless churches. Visit La Catedral San Cristobal de la Habana, the Palacio de los Marqueses de Aguas Claras and the Plaza de Armas. After a full day of exploration, enjoy an evening at leisure.

  • Havana - Afro-Cuban Religion Tour (guide and transport included)
  • Havana - Leader led City Tour of Old Havana
  • Havana - American Vintage Car Tour (No guide and transport included)

This morning, head east to Vinales. En route stop by an outer-Havana suburb to see the passion project of Jose Fuster, an artist who has turned an entire neighbourhood into a lively and colourful series of mosaics. Known as 'Fusterlandia', the inspiring and whimsical scenery is a perfect spot for pictures. Continue your journey to a local community in Las Terrazas (approximately 2 hours). The village was built as part of a government reforestation project and has since received a UNESCO biosphere listing. Meet up with local community leaders who will share insights into Las Terrazas and how the society works. You’ll also visit the ecological research centre and take a guided walk around the complex. After lunch take a 2 hour drive to Vinales – situated in one of the most picturesque parts of Cuba, it’s a small and culturally rich village, with friendly and welcoming residents. On your way into the village, you may pass by the vibrant Mural de la Prehistoria at the foot of the verdant Sierra de Vinales. Take the short journey into the centre of town and arrive in time for a brief orientation walk before heading to a privately-owned organic farm to learn about sustainable farming in Cuba. Hopefully meet local farmer Wilfredo Garcia Correa or at least his family who will show us around the farm and explain the methods used to cultivate crops without the use of pesticides, then enjoy a deliciously fresh and diverse meal prepared by the family, a truly authentic farm-to-fork experience!

  • Havana - Jaimanitas (Mosaic-laden Neighbourhood) including Fusterlandia (Entrance fee)
  • Las Terrazas - Sustainable Rural Economy Project (Entrance fee and Guide included)
  • Vinales - Leader-led orientation walk
  • Vinales - Farm-to-table dinner at an eco-friendly ranch

Today at 9 am, spend the morning (approximately 3 hours) finding out more about Cuban agriculture with a visit to a local tobacco farm to learn about the tradition of Cuban cigars. Get an insight as to how the communist system works, how much tobacco they keep, how much produce they give back to the government and how they make ends meet. Learn about the process of tobacco planting to rolling the final cigar. Share in the secret recipe of how they cure their leaves, which originated from one family and has been passed down through three generations – then drink some freshly roasted coffee from the farm while watching an expert roll a cigar. In the afternoon, get involved in a 1-hour salsa dance lesson, followed by a cooking demonstration from a local chef. Vinales is one of the more agriculturally productive areas of Cuba, so an abundance of homegrown seasonal fruit and vegetables are always on offer such as avocados, mangoes, pineapples, papaya, guava, and several varieties of sweet potatoes. Sit back, relax and enjoy the well-prepared meal while overlooking the lush scenery of Vinales.

  • Vinales - Half-day Valley tour on foot including Tobacco Farmhouse
  • Vinales - Salsa dance lesson (1 hour)
  • Vinales - Cooking Demonstration by Local Chef

Depart Vinales at 8 am and head to Cienfuegos – drive for approximately 4.5 hours before stopping for lunch. This afternoon you’ll visit the Korimakao Cultural Project in Ciénega de Zapata, an area famous for its wetlands. Founded in 1992, Korimakao is a project to bring theatre, music, and dancing to remote areas of Cuba. You’ll have the opportunity to meet a director of the project, who will talk to you about the importance of this venture and the number of students that have benefited from it. Continue along to the picturesque town of Cienfuegos (1.5 hours), a slice of Paris in the Caribbean. Founded in 1819 by pioneering French immigrants – the elegant architectural influence that these settlers brought with them, earned the city a UNESCO World Heritage Site listing in 2005.

  • Cienaga de Zapata - Korimakao Cultural Project (entrance fee, guide and transport included)
  • Cienfuegos - Leader-led orientation walk

This morning at approximately 8.30 am, your leader will show you around the charming streets of Cienfuegos before getting back on the road around 10 am, heading towards the National Park of Topes de Collantes (approximately 2 hours). Here there is a stop for a swim in a waterfall and to have lunch at a small privately-owned family farm. Travel onwards to the beautiful city of Trinidad (approximately 1.5 hours). Located near the lovely Valle de los Ingenios (Valley of Sugar Mills) and Playa Ancón, Trinidad enjoys long stretches of unspoiled, white sand beaches and is home to numerous churches and well-preserved colonial buildings. After lunch, begin with a guided cultural tour of the city (approximately 3 hours) – this includes an opportunity to visit two museums such as Museo Nacional de la Lucha Contra Bandidos, Museo Romantico or the History museum. Later, visit the privately-owned pottery workshop of the Santander family. This family are well known in the Cuban cultural landscape for having produced pottery for generations as well as assisting in the restoration of sculptures that once existed in this UNESCO world heritage site. Support the Cuban economy by taking the chance to purchase your own pottery as a reminder of your time in Cuba. In the evening, perhaps seek out the dance scene in Cuba. You may wish to see the local Afro Cuban Folkloric dance group that perform shows at the club Palenque, which has cultural and social importance in this region. Nightlife in Trinidad is probably the most accessible and intense in all of Cuba, with numerous live music venues and many dance performances every day of the week.

  • Trinidad - Leader-led City Tour including Museums (entrance fees, guide and transport included)
  • Trinidad - Pottery Centre
  • Trinidad - Afro-Cuban folklore show (entrance fee) from - EUR3
  • Trinidad - Cave Disco (entrance fee) - EUR14

This morning is yours to explore Trinidad by selecting one of the many optional activities on offer. Perhaps you’d like to hire a bike and cycle along the city’s colorful streets, past once-grand mansions, pastel buildings and wrought iron features – or instead you might choose to explore one of the excellent walking trails in the nearby Sierra del Escambray mountains. Your leader can suggest a lunch place at a local paladar. In the afternoon head to Playa Ancon for some beach time fun and maybe a little snorkeling, followed by a sunset picnic prepared for you by one of the privately-owned guesthouses.

  • Trinidad - Sunset Picnic at Playa Ancon (Weather Dependent)
  • Trinidad - Musical Instrument Lesson (guitar, double bass, tres, percussion) per hour - EUR10
  • Trinidad - Trek to El Nicho Waterfall (entrance fee, guide and transport included) - EUR257

Leave Trinidad around 9 am, heading to Santa Clara (approximately 2 hours), a key city in the Cuban Revolution to see the iconic statue of Ernesto Ché Guevara, built to commemorate his death and that of the revolutionaries. There will be time to explore the museum which honours Che's life. Drive back to Havana (approximately 3 hours) where there will be some time to freshen up before a final fun-filled night of music, dinner and dancing at Rosalia de Castro – where you’ll enjoy an ensemble of Cuban classics performed live by Buena Vista Social Club!

  • Santa Clara - Che Guevara Mausoleum and Museum (entrance fee)
  • Havana - Buena Vista Social Club Performance (entrance fee & dinner)

Your adventure ends today after breakfast. There are no activities planned for the final day so remember to say good-bye to your leader before you head back to the U.S.

Mexico City Havana, Cuba

Bienvenido! Welcome to Cuba! You’ll be joining a very long list of people who have become enchanted with Havana and who have wanted to experience all that the city has to offer. Your own motivations will be far more positive than many who have taken an interest in the city in the past, however. Havana is a city that has been coveted, again and again, filled to the brim with the wealth and prosperity of the New World. Granted, much of this wealth was in the natural resources of the region which were pillaged and exported back to Spain. The city has been an alluring target for invading forces, namely the Dutch, the British, the French, and various pirates. But this prosperity during colonial times is what gave Havana much of its undeniable visual character - namely its achingly beautiful architecture. Havana is the jewel in the crown of Cuba (and the entire Caribbean in our opinion).

She’s a dishevelled beauty, and while this is all part of her charm, the burgeoning tourist trade is allowing more and more of the city to be restored to its former beauty, courtesy of those tremendously timely tourist dollars. The heart of the city (Havana’s Old Town) is a UNESCO World Heritage site, helping to solidify Havana’s ongoing maintenance efforts. You’ll have plenty of time to explore Havana during your tour, although we expect that you’ll want to get her know her as soon as possible. Your first evening in Cuba is an ideal time to get acquainted with the city, even if it’s just the streets immediately around your accommodation. You will quickly see that many of the things you assumed to b1 e true about Cuba are just as you thought, although these are more than superficial charms. You will wander past enticing doorways with salsa music wafting out, intermingled with the pungently sweet aroma of cigars. Bold characters will march down the street, clad in luridly beautiful colours while having passionate conversations with each other. And everywhere those antique cars prowl the streets, crunching their gears as they sail past you. Havana can be a beautiful sensory overload, and it’s a lot to take in on your first day.

Your Private Cuba tour begins with your airport transfer on arrival from Havana’s José Martí International Airport to your accommodation in the city. During this first part of your Cuba tour, you will have the chance to meet your guide and discuss the finer details of your tour itinerary before they escort you on an orientation walk of the local area. Your guide will also arrange a classic convertible car to take you to El Morro Fort and El Cristo de La Habana. This is the perfect opportunity to learn a little more about Havana's turbulent history and to take some impressive photos of the city and iconic Malecon as the sun sets. Tonight, we will organize a special welcome dinner. This will be a great chance for you to get to know your guide and ask any burning questions you have. Your guide can also get to know a little more about you, so they can tailor your tour experience to your interests and expectations.

A NOTE ABOUT YOUR EVENINGS IN CUBA: We at Locally Sourced Cuba Tours along with our expert local tour guides would be happy to arrange a wide variety of evening activities for you, during your time in Cuba. Evenings are generally free time, allowing you to explore at your leisure. Although of course, if you become stuck for ideas, we would be delighted to make some suggestions, and your guide will be available to organise tickets, reservations and accompany you out if required. Your guide will have some fantastic ideas and recommendations based on your tastes and preferences.

Today you will really get to know Havana, and the heart of Havana is its Old Town; the village that essentially gave birth to the modern city. The best way to see this sumptuously beautiful district is on an Old Havana Walking Tour. Your guide will be with you every step of the way, perhaps encouraging you to keep moving when you inadvertently stop and stare at your surroundings every few minutes or so. Like much of the New World, Havana was once a walled fortress, although the growth of the city meant that it would soon need to sprawl beyond these original boundaries. There’s an abundance of cultural riches on offer, and you’ll walk past the El Capitolio, the Museo de la Revolución, and the Gran Teatro Habana.

This Old Havana Walking Tour also takes in some of the most stunning squares you will ever see – the Plaza de Armas, Plaza de la Catedral, Plaza San Francisco de Asis and Plaza Vieja. There is much to see on the walking tour, and you’ll think that the beauty of Havana has been squeezed into a relatively compact area. There’s a great deal of people watching to be done too, as you get to know the people who make up this vibrant city. On your walking tour of Old Havana, you will also get to visit a Mercado Agropecuario. What better sight than stands filled with tubers, vegetables and fruits? Potatoes, yucca, taro, sweet potatoes and plantains compete with tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage, carrots, watercress, Swiss chard, onions, peppers, cucumbers, green beans, beets and eggplants. And the fruits—guavas, pineapples, papayas, grapefruits, bananas, oranges, mangoes, watermelon and lemons—reign supreme. Meats are also sold at these markets, mostly fresh pork, mutton and ham.

After an engrossing morning of walking there will be a rather welcome break for lunch at an authentic Cuban Paladar. Here you can enjoy some fantastic Cuban hospitality while you eat at a stunning example of the culinary scene that has flourished throughout the country in recent years. Now you can take a break from walking, and you are no doubt itching to take a ride in one of those classic cars that parade through the streets of the city. This iconic method of transportation is synonymous with Cuba, and it sure gives your legs a rest! On a Convertible Classic Car Tour, you’ll be whisked out of Old Havana and will clearly be able to see the contrast with the newer parts of central Havana, Havana Vedado and the faded grandeur of Miramar. We will also take you past the Colon Cemetery, Revolution Square and the iconic Malecon.

It’s time for a drinks break at El Floridita, one of Hemingway’s favourite bars. There’s even a life-sized statue of him at the bar. He enjoyed the daiquiris here, and you can do the same. You will also often find a great band here to enjoy some traditional Cuban music. In the evening you will have some free time to make the most of Havana’s lively nightlife. You can choose to do this independently, or your local guide will be available to host you. Your local guide will be able to recommend a range of options and organise tickets and transfers (paid for locally).

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Today is a free day to rest or continue to explore Havana with the support of your local guide. There is a range of optional activities your guide can recommend and help to organise that can be paid for locally (transportation and entrance fees). Your guide will have gotten to know you well by now and will have their own recommendations and suggestions to share. When anyone mentions Cuba two of the first things that come to mind are cigars and rum, immortalized by Hemingway. There is a rich, cultural tradition when it comes to producing the world’s best cigars and rum, and on this tour you will gain an insight into just why these famous exports are so intertwined with Cuba herself. Today you might choose to visit the Havana Rum Museum. If you think this museum looks palatial, you are correct since it’s housed in a converted old palace. Naturally you will have the chance to learn about the rum making process and even do some tastings.

There is the opportunity to upgrade your package at the Havana Rum Museum (paid locally). Ask your guide for more details. Another option is to visit the Partagas Cigar Factory where the mystique behind cigar making will be revealed, allowing you to gain a sense of the significance of these beauties. You will also witness first-hand the amount of effort, care and tradition that goes into making these Cuban treasures (even non-smokers will find this tour very interesting). You might like to take this opportunity to visit Havana’s underrated beach – Playas del Este, and spend time getting to know the locals. Though not known to be one of the best beaches in Cuba, Playas del Este will be a pleasant surprise. It begins just 18 kilometres to the east of the capital at the small resort of Bacuranao. Although none of these places has so far witnessed the kind of mega development redolent of Cancún or Varadero, Playas del Este is still a popular tourist drawcard.

All of Havana comes to play and relax on the soft white sands and clear aquamarine waters of the beautiful Atlantic coastline. If you would like to visit the beach, just let your guide know and they will arrange transportation (paid locally). There are also many museums and monuments to check out, dependent on your interests. You might want to be enthralled at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Arte Cubano). This is where the crème de la crème of Cuban art is proudly displayed (and the museum exclusively displays Cuban art). Works are displayed in chronological order starting on the 3rd floor and are surprisingly varied. This ordering allows you to easily take in the development of Cuban art throughout the centuries. Amongst others, you will see the works of Guillermo Collazo, considered to be the first truly great Cuban artist. There is also Rafael Blanco, with his cartoon-like paintings and sketches; along with Raúl Martínez, a master of 1960s Cuban pop art; and the Picasso-like Wifredo Lam. Or you might choose to be rapturously occupied by Havana’s Museum of the Revolution, and even the building in which it’s housed has a story to tell. This grand building, deliberately impressive in scope, was the Presidential Palace prior to the Cuban Revolution. After the government was overthrown in 1959, the building was home to the Government and the Council of Ministers until 1965, when it hosted Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba. In 1974, it became a museum dedicated to the Cuban Revolution, and two years later, it witnessed the approval of the 1976 Constitution. It was awarded national monument status in 2010. Another option is a tour of the El Capitolio Nacional (National Capitol of Cuba, allowing you to explore one of the most emblematic buildings in Havana. This majestic construction, located in the Centro Habana, is similar to that in Washington D.C, but a meter higher, a meter wider, and a meter longer, as well as much more rich in detail. To finish its construction, they needed more than 5000 workers, 3 years, 3 months and 20 days: as well as approximately 17 million American dollars.

If it’s souvenirs you are after, Havana’s largest arts and crafts market is the Almacenes de San José at the Port of Havana. Built in 1885, this mammoth and ornate warehouse now serves as a cultural centre with art exhibitions, theatrical performances and recreational activities. Its most significant contribution is undoubtedly the handicrafts on sale. Unlike other Latin American countries, Cuba does not have a strong tradition in producing handicrafts. It is therefore really surprising to see how Cuban artistic handicraft has developed over the last three decades.

Havana Pinar del Rio province  Viñales

Welcome to the Pinar del Rio province and the beautiful surroundings of Las Terrazas and Soroa. This region was once lush, then had its natural resources exploited, before returning to its former pristine state as the result of a project spearheaded by Fidel Castro himself in the 1960s. It’s now a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. To start the day, we’ll take a short detour to the fishing village of Jaimanitas, and this unassuming part of the city has been utterly transformed by the artist Jose Fuster. Fuster has made his entire home, and much of the surrounding neighbourhood, into an artwork using tiles in mosaic forms. This public art installation is lovingly known as Fusterlandia and has now spread to encompass more than 80 homes, all decorated with ornate murals and domes to reflect the personality of each of Fuster's neighbours. There could be no living space more personalised.

In addition to the idiosyncratic homes, Furster has also contributed a chess park with giant boards and tables, a theatre, and public swimming pools. Fuster’s art has become a cherished part of Cuban culture and arguably joins the rank of other public artworks such as that of Gaudi in Barcelona or that of Brâncuși in the Romanian city of Targu Jiu - art that has come to almost define a particular part of a city. We have time today for a walk around the Las Terrazas Township to meet the friendly locals and to admire the pretty San Juan Mountain stream. In Las Terrazas there are also art, woodwork and pottery studios that are open to the public. The entire town has become known as a type of artist’s retreat. Cafetal Buenavista is Cuba’s oldest (now partially restored) coffee plantation, built in 1801 by refugees from Haiti. Much of the property (such as the dormitories that housed the slaves who worked the plantation) is now in ruin, but this adds to its haunting quality. The Cafetal Buenavista can be seen on the Sendero las Delicias hike, which also takes in lush, green landscapes and bright, coloured houses before arriving at the small village of Soroa. Often referred to as The Gate to The Garden of Eden, this picturesque village is the starting point for many hikes to the soaring Sierra del Rosario.

New Mexico wildfire map: Track Ruidoso area fires as responders work to contain them

Click here to see live updates on the New Mexico wildfires.

Emergency responders are working to contain the two wildfires that prompted evacuations in southern New Mexico.

As of Tuesday, June 25, the Salt Fire and the South Fork Fire had spread over 25,500 acres:

  • South Fork Fire: 17,556 acres; containment: 54%.
  • Salt Fire: 7,947 acres; containment: 38%.

New Mexico wildfire map and smoke tracker

The fire tracker provides a map with pinpoint locations of each fire and shows where red flag warnings are in effect, among other information. You can also click on each point to see detailed information on the fire in that area.

New Mexico communities ordered to evacuate

The Village of Ruidoso, with a population of nearly 8,000, was placed under mandatory evacuation orders on June 18 as the wildfires rapidly spread and have caused property damage. However, full-time residents have been allowed to return to the area with a week's worth of food and drinking water. The village warned some homes may not have utilities, and a boil water advisory was put into effect Saturday, June 22

Two deaths have been reported  and over 23,000 structures have been affected. Portions of US Highway 70 and US Highway 48 have remained closed.

Tribal members who have been displaced outside of the Mescalero Apache Reservation due to the fires may contact the Tribe’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for assistance returning to the reservation. If stranded out of town at other evacuation sites, members may call the EOC at 575-464-9214 for more details.
