The best times to visit Belize to avoid the heat or rainy season

Tiny, tropical Belize is where Latin-flavored Central America meets the captivating culture of the Caribbean, but it pays to think about when to go.

You’ll get the best out of Belize’s Maya ruins, vine-draped rainforests and impressive barrier reef (the largest outside of Australia) during the dry season from December to April. At other times, crowds evaporate and prices plummet, offering a more relaxed taste of the tropics.

Many visitors swear by the shoulder season in November and May, when there’s still plenty of sunshine, but much less competition for towel space on Belize’s Caribbean beaches.

Some activities , though, are definitely better in the dry – rain can put a real damper on diving in the spooky Great Blue Hole at Lighthouse Reef or exploring the flooded caverns of Actun Tunichil Muknal.

Plus, the summer heat can be a lot to handle. Here’s our guide to help you decide the perfect time to visit Belize. 

The dry season (December to April) has the best weather

Brilliant blue skies. Birdlife checking in along the Caribbean Coast. Belize's dry season (December to April) offers prime weather for birding, sunbathing, swimming and diving on the beaches of Caye Caulker , Ambergris Caye  and hundreds of other islands along the Belize Barrier Reef. Accordingly, hotels and transport operators bump up their prices by 30% to 50%. 

Although the dry season only really gets underway in late January, the post–New Year holidays see a huge influx of people and a big increase in prices, so those extra-high “peak” prices apply from mid-December to mid-January. Reservations are essential if you plan on enjoying some Christmas sun.

There are big NYE parties in San Pedro and horse races at Burrell Boom. Cyclists ride from Corozal to Belize City for the Krem Annual New Year's Day Classic.

In February, prices for accommodation remain high, and there’s lots of demand for space on boats to the cayes and trips inland to caves, ruins and jungle reserves. Lagoons and rivers begin to dry up and birds become easier to spot, as they congregate around the limited remaining water sources. 

The dry season is also the best time to explore the Maya wonders of the country, from the stepped pyramids of Caracol and Altun Ha to the menacing masks adorning temples at Lamanai and Xunantunich .

Cavers can take advantage of the dry weather to wriggle and wade deep underground in sacred caves such as Actun Tunichil Muknal and Nohoch Che’en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve.

Belize celebrates Easter with passion, so expect extra crowds during the April weeks before and after Semana Santa (Holy Week).

November and May mean fewer crowds and cheaper prices

The crowds die down on either side of the peak dry months. However, most of Belize’s attractions stay open and hotels offer wallet-friendly prices. Temperatures stay warm in November and May, there are plenty of dry days and you won’t have to share the temples, beaches and jungles with a crowd.

Visit in November and you can also join the party for Garifuna Settlement Day  celebrating the culture of the Garifuna people – descendants of escaped enslaved Africans and Indigenous Carib people, who were evicted to Central America from St Vincent .  Garifuna Settlement Day is held on November 19.

Humidity increases and the dry season gradually turns to the wet season toward the end of May, but this can be a good time to travel with fewer tourists and low prices. There are still plenty of dry days and most tourist attractions stay open.

May is also a great time to go diving in Belize. There was once a good chance of encountering whale sharks during this time as they gathered to feast on the eggs released by breeding snappers in the Gladden Spit & Silk Cayes Marine Reserve.

However, sightings have been vanishingly rare in recent years. There's hope that they will return in greater numbers soon.

The chocolate festival in Toledo and the cashew festival in Crooked Tree Village are good reasons to detour inland in May, too.

June to October is the wet season

Low season means low prices, but this is the off-season for a reason. Heavy rainfall and high temperatures sweep across the country from June to mid-November. The rain is especially present at night when thunder and lightning put on quite a show.

Some hotels and tourist-oriented attractions close down for the season, especially in September and October, and trips into the rainforest and to Maya ruins are marred by muddy tracks and abundant mosquitos.

Hurricanes are possible between August and October and can cause chaos on the coast (the last hurricane to make landfall in Belize was Hurricane Nana in 2020). But in case that sounds like a doom-laden forecast, it doesn’t rain all day – or indeed every day – and most of the showers take place overnight or early morning.

Conversely, September is also the most festive month in Belize – particularly in Belize City – as locals celebrate national holidays with gusto.

Resorts often slash their prices in the wet season, meaning some real bargains for travelers who don’t need constant sunshine. Play it safe and bring waterproofs, a rain-proof cover for your backpack and a dry bag for your electronics.

The Best Times to Visit Belize for the Ultimate Tropical Vacation

These are the best times to go to Belize for lower prices, beautiful weather, and more.

Tucked under Mexico’s Quintana Roo state on the east coast of Central America, Belize is a nature lover’s paradise. The tiny nation punches above its weight when it comes to all the tropical adventures found along its roughly 240 miles of Caribbean coastline and within its jungle interior. 

Belize has 400 islands and cays, including Caye Caulker, Ambergris Caye, and Half Moon Caye. The country’s vast stretches of protected barrier reef are part of the largest barrier reef system in the Northern Hemisphere, making the country a must-visit destination for scuba divers and snorkelers. Diverse animal species — including jaguars, pumas, and ocelots – dwell in the country’s wildlands and national reserves, including the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. Plus, Mayan ruins offer a fascinating look into the area’s ancient history.

These are the best times to go to Belize for beautiful weather, fewer crowds, and more. 

Best Times to Visit Belize for Smaller Crowds 

Belize is busiest around the holiday season from late December to early January and during March and April. “November and May are great times to avoid crowds as most families are preparing for the holidays or back in school from breaks,” says Janet Woollam, managing director at Victoria House Resort & Spa , a 42-key property on Ambergris Caye with a private beachfront. “During these months, travelers can have a more relaxed experience visiting low-trafficked sites like ancient Mayan temples, joining rainforest expeditions, or zip-lining over jungle canopies teeming with adorable black howler monkeys,” she says. 

Best Times to Visit Belize for Good Weather 

While “good weather” can be subjective, it’s safe to say most travelers want to enjoy sunny skies and moderate temperatures and avoid tropical thunderstorms and stifling humidity. 

“January to March are the driest months to visit Belize, with prolonged periods of warm sunshine particularly in the north and central regions,” says William Allison, senior Belize specialist at Audley Travel . Woollam suggests February as a pleasant month to visit, too – but you won’t be the only one with Belize on your radar at this time of year when the temperatures are at their all-around nicest for spending time outside.

Best Times to Visit Belize for Lower Prices 

As long as you don’t mind the rain, June and July can be a good time to take advantage of discounted travel, Allison says. 

“The rainy season (in Belize) begins in June, and with it comes lower prices at hotels,” he says. “June and July are still rewarding times to visit, and the rain is rarely the persistent rainfall that is experienced later in the season, with sharp showers predominantly falling in the afternoon and at night.” 

Another perk of visiting Belize at this time of year, he says, is the start of Caribbean Spiny Lobster season, which kicks off in mid-June and runs through Feb. 15. “Placencia and Ambergris Caye are great places to try some tasty lobster dishes,” he suggests. 

Woollam points to September and October as the traditional sweet spot in Belize for landing lower prices outside of the hotter summer months but warns, “This can be somewhat skewed, as interest in travel is at a high since many would-be travelers weren’t able to go on holiday for the past few years.”

Best Times to Visit Belize for Scuba Diving and Snorkeling 

With waters so blue and brilliant, almost everyone who visits Belize wants to spend some time splashing in the Caribbean Sea. You can snorkel and scuba dive year round in Belize with an average water temperature of around 80 degrees, depending on the season. Water and air temperatures are slightly cooler in Belize during the dry season, which starts in November and runs to July. 

To find diving and snorkeling tour operators, head to spots like Placencia, Ambergris Caye, and Caye Caulker. “Ambergris Caye also serves as a base to plan your offshore dive trips to the world-renowned Blue Hole dive site at Lighthouse Reef Atoll or the less-recognized but equally impressive Turneffe Atoll,” says Woollam, whose hotel arranges local scuba and snorkel tours as well as excursions further afield. 

For a truly special marine encounter, Allison recommends traveling offshore from Placencia to Gladden Spit. “It’s one of the few places in the world that snorkelers and divers can encounter the magnificent whale sharks,” he says, referring to the world’s largest (and very docile, filter-feeding) fish. “They commonly visit during the full moon periods of April and May.”

Worst Times to Visit Belize 

There really isn’t a terrible time to visit Belize, as long as you can handle some inclement weather. If you want to avoid the rain, steer clear of Belize from June through November, which is when hurricane season intersects the rainiest months of the year. While rainstorms during this period are unlikely to wash out an entire day’s worth of vacation fun, they can lead to canceled activities when there's a heavy enough downpour, so it’s something to consider as you plot out your trip.

“By early August, travel is more challenging in Belize as the wet season progresses, and there is a low risk of hurricanes” warns Allison. Travelers should also be aware that some businesses close up in September to perform annual maintenance, he says, so plan accordingly.

January in Belize

• New Year’s Day – There is a dodgy-sounding horse race in a small town called Burrell Boom Village, which is about 30 km northwest of Belize City. It’s well off the beaten path so you’d probably have to plan a part of your trip around being in this village in order to see the race, which is sure to be entertaining and also sure to be a good way to lose all your money if you got involved in the gambling side of things.
• New Year’s Day (again) – The annual KREM bicycle race from the Orange Walk city center in Corozal to Belize City. KREM is a TV and radio station in Belize and they sponsor this 50-mile race every January 1 in several different classes.

January average high/low in Belize City 80°F/70°F (26°C/21°C) with average rainfall of 4.5 inches (11 centimeters). This is a small country and San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker are both nearby, so they have nearly identical weather to Belize City. When it does rain it tends to come in bursts, so it’s unlikely you’ll have much rain, and if you do it will be only over the course of an hour here or an hour there.

Once you get past the first week in January you are out of “peak season” but still in “high season.” Outside of the Christmas weeks it’s always easy to get cheap airfare to Belize , regardless of how perfect the weather is there or how lousy it is where you are. The trick is to buy your ticket as early as possible, and check for flights in the middle of the week if you are planning without much notice.

Where to stay

January in Belize is the perfect season to check out the main tourist islands, Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker . The village of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye has hotels in all price ranges, and Caye Caulker is loaded with budget places for backpacker types and hippies.

If you want to laze around all day on the beach you should probably fly straight down to the Placencia Peninsula , as it has the best sandy beaches in the country and also lots of water sports activities available.

Belize is a major destination for serious scuba diving , but these same excellent conditions translate into great snorkeling as well. Sailing and fishing are both extremely popular in Belize with great conditions for both, especially during January.

You might also try sea kayaking , which is an interesting mix of a water sport, sightseeing, and camping on secluded islands over nights.

Belize has a comfortable subtropical climate that is suitable for travel year-round. The average yearly temperature is about 80 degrees F with humidity hovering about 85%. The coolest winter temperatures can reach the low 60’s. During the hottest parts of summer, it can reach the mid 90’s on the mainland.

Trade winds blow along the coast, cayes (pronounced keys) and reef most of the year, keeping temperatures pleasant. Rainfall is heaviest in the south and in the lowland jungle areas. It is lightest in the north and on the cayes. Climate can be determined by altitude, with evenings at higher elevations pleasantly cool while the lowland jungle is often muggy and humid. Belize has two distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season typically occurs December through May and the wet season June through November. In the tropics, rain can occur any time of year, but during the dry season rain falls in brief bursts. Some locals recognize a third transition season during the winter. Belize Dry Season – High Season for Travel

The Belize dry season occurs from December through May and is high season for travel and cruising. Climate is characterized by warm to hot temperatures, sunny days, cooling trade winds and little rain.

From December through February, strong northerly winds called “nortes” can blow (see norte season below). March and April are idyllic with little rain, pleasant temperatures and calm, clear water. When rain does fall during the dry season, it typically falls in moderate short spurts resulting in a pleasant cooling effect.

During the high season, especially around the Christmas and Easter holidays, prices are higher. Hotels and attractions are more crowded. Belize small ship cruises sell out fast. We recommend booking early if you plan to travel during the dry season in Belize.  

Some Belizeans will recognize a third season, when the rainy season transitions to dry. The norte season occurs from November through February and is characterized by occasional strong northerly winds or “nortes” coming from the U.S. and Mexico. Nortes can bring thick clouds and cool nights, causing some of the lowest temperatures of the year in the low 60’s.

Belize Rainy Season – Low Season for Travel

June through November marks the rainy season in Belize. The rainy season, also known as green season or Belize low season, is characterized by warm temperatures and brief but sometimes intense rain. The rainforest and wildlife come to life with trees and flowers in bloom. This in turn makes birds and wildlife more accessible to travelers. 

Tropical rainfall occurs in June or early July and is punctuated by a reprieve in late July and August known as the “mauger” or “little dry season.” The wettest months occur in September and October. Unless there is a tropical storm, rain showers typically arrive in showers lasting one to two hours. 

The amount of rain can vary considerably by region. For instance, southern Belize can receive more than 150 inches per year while the north rarely receives more than 50 inches per year.

Belize hurricane season formally coincides with the Atlantic hurricane season, which officially runs from June 1 until November 30 each year. Historically, the most active period for tropical storms is the end of August through mid-October.  Hurricanes rarely make landfall in Belize but can be serious when they do. If you plan to travel this time of year, keep an eye on weather reports and purchase travel insurance at the time of booking.

June marks the start of the Belize rainy season. Temperatures remain high, but fresh breezes off the Caribbean Sea and more frequent but brief afternoon showers keep things moderate and pleasant. Lobster season begins and is available in restaurants across the country. Atlantic hurricane season begins, but statistically not an active month for tropical storms here.

Rainforest wildlife can be viewed year-round in Belize. Monkeys, coatimundi, iguanas, scarlet macaws and blue morpho butterflies are just some of the amazing creatures you may encounter. Food is abundant during the wet season, so wildlife can be most active during this time—especially in June and July as the rains arrive and hungry animals gorge on the blooming trees and flowers. 

The best time of day to view wildlife in the rainforest is early in the morning. Get up before sunrise to experience the most wildlife activity and perhaps a beautiful dawn. Night walks are also a great time to view wildlife. A good guide will help you find all sorts of critters after dark. Most Belize lodges will offer morning and night wildlife walks. 

Best Time for Birding in Belize

Belize is a bird-watching paradise. With over 570 bird species and diverse neotropical landscapes, Belize is a favorite spot among birders and nature travelers. Birding in Belize is excellent year-round.

The best time to travel to Belize for birding is December through April. During the dry season, resident birds are joined by migratory birds from North America. During Belize summer (rainy season), migratory birds arrive from South America. Most organized bird tours operate from January through April.

Best Time to Take a Cruise in Belize

Large cruise ships will call in Belize at any time of year. Belize small ship cruises operate from October through April each year. Belize catamaran charter cruises are available year-round with a short break in September and October.

The best time for sailing in Belize is between June and November. With southeast trade winds averaging 10-13 knots, Belize has great sailing conditions.

Inside the barrier reef, waters are protected from Caribbean Ocean swells but sailing vessels can encounter wind chop. Outside the reef, boats can encounter ocean swells. The best time for sailing and visiting Belize’s outer atolls such as Turneffe Atoll, Lighthouse Reef or Glovers Reef is November through February.

Best Time to Snorkel & Scuba Dive in Belize

Snorkeling and diving are terrific year-round in Belize. Water temperature averages 84 degrees F. Visibility is outstanding and ranges from 60-100 feet. Belize is one of the premiere snorkeling and scuba diving destinations in the world.

The best time to travel to Belize for snorkeling and scuba diving in Belize is between April and June. This time of year, there is increased visibility because winds are calm and the water is clear.

Rains falling July through October do not affect visibility at offshore reef sites, although Caribbean surface conditions can be choppy. 

November through April bring marginally cooler temperatures above and below the water’s surface. During this time most divers are comfortable in a shorty wetsuit.

Best Time to See Whale Sharks in Belize

April and May are the best months to view whale sharks in Belize, although they may also be found in March and June. Whale shark viewing can be dependent on lunar cycles with the best time to snorkel or dive with whale sharks being about two days before the full moon through ten days after the full moon.  

Best Time to Fish in Belize

Belize offers world-class sport fishing for bonefish, permit and tarpon. The best time to fish in Belize is May through August when all three species are available. This time of year is known as the grand slam fishing season.  

Bone fish are available year-round, with no clear season. Permit are also found throughout the year but are best when trade winds are consistent mid-winter through early summer. Tarpon are migratory and best fished in June through August. Fishing is encouraged on all Belize catamaran cruises , which often troll while underway, catching whatever nature provides. 

Lobster Season in Belize

The Caribbean spiney lobster is a delicious delicacy. Sometimes referred to locally as crayfish, the scientific name is Panulirus argus . It’s also known as rock lobster or Caribbean lobster.

To preserve the species and maintain a sustainable fishery, the lobster season in Belize is limited to June through February each year. A license is required and there are size limits and restrictions, so check with your guide before going lobster hunting. Exact dates can vary year to year, so check in advance if your plans are hungry for lobster. Catching and eating fresh lobster is a highlight of any Belize charter cruise . 

Belize Conch Season

The Belize conch fishing season typically opens in October and runs through June or until the national catch quota is reached. Queen conch (pronounced conk) is a staple seafood in Belize and the Caribbean. Conch is normally marinated in citrus or pounded thin and sautéed to tenderize the meat. The tiny nation of Belize – small by area, and even smaller by population – is unlike anywhere else in mainland Central America. It's the only English-speaking country in the region, and culturally is often grouped with the island nations of the Caribbean rather than its Spanish-speaking neighbors. Central America's youngest country by far – it gained full independence from Great Britain in 1981, 160 years after most of its peers – Belize is sparsely populated and small-scale, its towns entirely without the sprawling tower blocks of next door Mexico and Guatemala.

Belize does have  some  things in common with its neighbors – miles of pearly-white Caribbean coastline, dense tropical jungles punctuated with rushing waterfalls and a cultural diversity that's remarkable given its tiny 400,000-or-so population. Mestizo and Belizean Creole are the majority groups but 11% of the population is ethnic ancient Mayan, while an estimated 25,000 Mennonites live in secluded settlements up and down the country, many wearing plain dress and shunning modern technology. The Garifuna – an Afro-Indigenous group with their own language and distinctive, rhythmic music played with maracas and drums – make up roughly 6%.

Belize has a developed tourist industry, but historically its stream of American and Canadian visitors have eschewed the mainland in favor of the screensaver cayes and corals that lie a little way offshore. Tour guides will proudly tell you that Belize has the largest living barrier reef on Earth ('living' being the key word – Australia's Great Barrier Reef has endured devastating coral bleaching events in recent years), and its inquisitive sea turtles, vibrantly colored parrotfish and, between March and June, enormous (and harmless) whale sharks are happy to pose for divers, snorkelers and cameras.

However, discerning travelers are increasingly waking up to the benefits of staying onshore – at least for a while. Perhaps the greatest civilization of the pre-colonial Americas (sorry, Aztecs) and certainly the most long-lasting, the ancient Mayans thrived in Belize's forested interior, and their stepped temples still emerge from the jungle looking just as mesmerizing as they ever did. More modern cultural treasures also abound, while 70% of the land is 'in its natural state,' supporting thriving tropical flora and fauna.

Belize's hotel scene is still dominated by boutiques, and those seeking whitewashed 15-floor resorts would be better served in nearby Cancun. Some visitors are also put off by the country's crime rate, but a couple of troubled neighborhoods in Belize City heavily skew the statistics, and the rest of the country is much safer. With year-round 81°F temperatures and a mild rainy season, Belize is an increasingly popular pick for Caribbean island fantasy, astonishing ancient history and a cultural landscape of surprising diversity and depth.

1. Visit the Mayan ruins at Xunantunich...

Mexico has Chichen Itza, neighboring Guatemala has Tikal, but Belize has an embarrassment of ancient Mayan sites jockeying for your attention. Literally translated as 'stone woman,' Xunantunich might just be our favorite – a sprawling temple complex that thrived as Mayan city between 700-1000 AD, a stone's throw from the Guatemala border. Easily accessible from capital Belmopan and the airport in Belize City via the George Price Highway, visitors complete their journey over the Mopan River on a free hand-cranked cable car ferry. The site peaks with El Castillo, the 130-foot main temple complete with friezes of rain god Chaac. Climb to the top for 360-degree views over the surrounding jungle.

2. ...and the Mayan ruins at Caracol...

Xunantunich's main temple remains the second tallest building in Belize – and that's because the main temple at Caracol is the tallest. Further south along the Guatemalan border and set on a high forest plateau, the site was one of the great centers of Mayan power between the 6th and 8th centuries – a city that held up to twice as many inhabitants as today's Belize City. Obscured by dense jungle until its rediscovery in 1938, Caracol's soaring palaces and ancient ball courts are extremely under-touristed. That's partly because they lie at the end of a long and bumpy road through thick forest – an adventure in itself.

3. ...and the Mayan ruins at Lamanai

Completing our trio of jungle-encircled Mayan complexes is Lamanai, which means 'submerged crocodile' in the Maya language. Just poking out above the treeline, it's perhaps the most  Indiana Jones  of our three sites, set in northern Belize overlooking the New River Lagoon. Occupied for more than two millennia, the site's tallest temple is not currently climbable, but the nearby Jaguar Temple still offers exquisite canopy views. As with Caracol, the ruins are delightfully crowd-free, and some tourists choose to visit via a river boat excursion that doubles as a wildlife-watching tour.

4. Learn the history of chocolate at the Maya Chocolate Center

The Mayans claim chocolate as their own invention (cacao's early history is murky, but they've got a strong case), and today workers at the Maya Chocolate Center outside Hopkins churn out the crumbly candy almost the same way their ancestors did in millennia past. A poster on the wall proudly commemorates the visit of Prince William, now heir to the British throne, and his wife Catherine as part of their Caribbean tour marking the then-Queen's platinum jubilee. The assembled press snapped away as the royal couple crushed the chocolate mix on rollers and sampled the cacao drink once sipped by the Mayan elite. "Che'il Mayan Chocolate," reads the poster, "where everyone's treated like royalty."

5. Absorb the culture and history of the Garifuna people

Garifuna music is the unofficial sound of Belize – soulful songs in the Garifuna language underpinned by the complex rhythms of Garifuna drums. Various hotels and local tour operators offer Garifuna cultural experiences in Hopkins, where you'll learn how to tap out rudimentary beats on the primero and segunda drums, with the waves of the Caribbean serving up a soothing backing track. Step two is Garifuna dance: spiritual, improvisational motions that require near-constant foot movement. Finish your afternoon by learning to cook 'hudut,' a traditional coconut and seafood stew that would put most surrounding restaurants to shame.

6. Soar above the famous Blue Hole

By far Belize's best-known natural wonder, the Blue Hole has spent decades on the front covers of guide books, and remains one of the country's main draws. A vast sinkhole stamped like an inkblot on the ocean, it's more than 1,000 feet across and resides in the middle of Lighthouse Reef, roughly 43 miles from the mainland. It's almost too  big and too  blue – the colorful fish and vibrant corals tend to stop at the perimeter, and from down on the water it's hard to get any sense of scale. We recommend taking a tourist flight above the feature, which you can do in a helicopter or light aircraft.

7. Go diving and snorkelling in San Pedro...

San Pedro proudly claims to be the "isla bonita" in Madonna's 1987 hit of the same name. The singer herself has denied this, but it's telling that it seemed a good fit. The only town on Ambergris Caye and the undisputed heavyweight of Belizean tourism, San Pedro's parasol-covered beaches and over-the-water bars are as close as Belize gets to the resorts of Barbados and Cancun. The real attraction lies just offshore; the Hol Chan Marine Reserve is Belize's best-known dive site, a spread of splendid coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove swamps. Submerge at Shark Ray Alley to drift among nurse sharks (pictured) and southern stingrays, both inquisitive species well-used to human presence.

8. ...and on Caye Caulker...

San Pedro's likeable little brother, Caye Caulker is as laidback and low-key as San Pedro is loud and energetic. This tiny backpacker's paradise has no cars, and the only traffic signs tell cyclists to obey the island's motto, 'go slow.' The wonders of Hol Chan are on its underwater doorstep, but don't sleep on the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve, where lucky swimmers could spot turtles and manatees in addition to the usual array of fish. A narrow channel called 'the Split' bisects the isle, and its deep, seaweed-less waters are perhaps the area's best.

9. ...and from the mainland

Caribbean islands seem to fit the tourist fantasy more neatly than stretches of mainland Caribbean coast, but you can enjoy the seas of Belize just as easily when based onshore. The Splash Dive Center in Placencia is a great option if you're unsure where to start: their many itineraries include the sprawling reefs surrounding the teeny-tiny Silk Caye (pictured), Laughing Bird Caye and its flocks of belly-flopping pelicans, and the coral nurseries established by Fragments of Hope, a community organization restoring reef habitats one sprig of coral at a time.

10. Relax in the Maya King Waterfalls

Even when heading inland you should keep your swimsuit to hand. Waterfall pools make particularly idyllic swim spots, and the Maya King double waterfall between Hopkins and Placencia is probably the most popular – two calm pools brushed by trailing vines, one with changing rooms and a jump-off platform. Float on your back to gentle sounds of rushing water and stare up at the thick foliage creating a circular hole in the sky. During the rainy season the fall strengthens to a surging torrent – nature's equivalent of switching on the power shower.

11. Zip line over the jungle

A strange mixture of adrenaline and serenity, it's hard to quite describe the feeling of soaring above the canopy across a steep-sided river valley, impenetrable jungle rising on both sides as far as the eye can see. Seven zip lines criss-cross the South Stann Creek River – a short drive from the Maya King Waterfall and often included in the same tour – sending tourists hurtling between a series of sturdy wooden platforms barely visible among the trees. The rush of wind can feel overwhelming, but remember to look around and take in a view usually enjoyed only by helicopter cameramen filming nature documentaries.

12. Search for jaguars in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

You could  see a jaguar almost anywhere in Belize – crossing a road, paddling down a river or even, very occasionally, prowling the outermost streets of a village. But you can bump up your chances by taking a tour through the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world's only dedicated jaguar reserve that also houses jaguarundis, howler monkeys, snakes and more than 300 species of bird. Visitors should, however, manage their expectations. Jaguars are elusive and well-camouflaged, so you're much more likely to see evidence of jaguars – footprints and excrement – than the big cats themselves.

13. Pay a visit to the Belize Zoo

It may sound strange to fly to the home of so many fascinating creatures only to see them in captivity, but the Belize Zoo prides itself on being a rescue and rehabilitation facility as much as a place where children can gawp through glass. The zoo, just off the busy George Price Highway, takes in animals retrieved from the illegal wildlife trade, and enclosures are carefully designed to reflect natural habitats. You'll see animals that, realistically, you'd be exceptionally lucky to see in the wild, including long-nosed tapirs, nicknamed 'mountain cows;' margays and ocelots, both small, spotted, jaguar-like cats; and harpy eagles, giant jungle raptors with notoriously intimidating plumage.

14. See majestic birds of prey at the Belize Raptor Center

The annoying thing about birds is that, since they can fly, you very rarely get a chance to see them up close. The Belize Raptor Center rescues, rehabilitates and releases injured and orphaned birds of prey, while using non-releasable individuals to impress and educate visitors with daily programs about these intimidating yet endearing animals. Current incumbents include Akna the black hawk-eagle, Jamin the bat falcon, Ceiba the ornate hawk-eagle, Cora the black vulture (pictured), Luna the spectacled owl and Toothless the white-tailed kite.

15. Learn about green iguanas in San Ignacio

San Ignacio is Belize's eco-tourism hub, and here even the hotels have wildlife sanctuaries. A Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice award winner for 2022 and 2023, the Green Iguana Conservation Project at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel gives guests and non-guests the chance to get up-close with these large and oddly cute reptiles, while learning about the initiative's incubation, hatching, rearing and releasing program. In Belize, iguanas are hunted as food for part of the year, and 'bamboo chicken,' as it is known, remains a popular dish in some quarters. If that doesn't sound like a tasty teatime, fear not – the restaurant on the hotel veranda has a more conventional menu.

16. Marvel at the famous ATM Cave

Belize has literally thousands of caves, several of which are popular with tourists, but only one of them starred in an episode of  Ghost Hunters  and appeared at the top of  National Geographic 's list of the world's top 10 most sacred caves. The Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave – known as the ATM Cave – near the mountain town of San Ignacio is a labyrinthine network of subterranean passages that visitors must hike, wade and swim to traverse. It's also a former center of Mayan spirituality that still boasts stoneware, skeletons and ceramics. Book tickets in advance – you can't enter the cave without a guide, and there's a cap of 125 visitors per day.

17. Explore the St Herman's Blue Hole National Park

As the name suggests, the St Herman's Blue Hole National Park, just off the Hummingbird Highway, boasts two tourist attractions – St Herman's and the Blue Hole. St Herman's is one of Belize's most popular tourist caves – you can see a portion of the cave without a guide, but we recommend one – and its jagged rock formations look all the eerier when illuminated solely by your headlamps. The Blue Hole (yes, Belize has two of them) is a sapphire-colored sinkhole superb for swimming, especially if you've spent your morning in a dark and dusty cave.

18. Float through twisting caverns while cave tubing

Cave tubing may sound like an extreme sport, but once your eyes adjust to the light there's something strangely soothing about bobbing through a subterranean cavern on an inflatable tube, the water as calm and still as the stone ceiling. Stalactites will glide past, their tips trailing in the clear-blue water, so keep your headlamps trained as your guide steers your plastic armada downriver. There are several sites in Belize where you can cave tube, and St Herman's Cave is among the most popular.

19. Brave the Black Hole Drop

The Black Hole Drop is almost as terrifying as it sounds. A 90-minute steep uphill hike takes you to the rim of a 300-foot-high sinkhole, where you'll have plenty of time to peer nervously down at the bottom of the basin while preparing to descend. A series of rappelling ropes and harnesses will then lower you into the pit, as the forest floor slowly emerges from the darkness. Take lunch at the bottom, and then it's rock-climbing and ladders all the way back up. Participants must be relatively fit and possess a strong stomach.

20. Stay in luxurious boutiques

The sprawling mega-resorts of Florida and Dubai aren't really Belize's style, but there's still a great range of high-end stays that offer more personalized luxury. In San Ignacio, in the thick forests of the Belizean interior, the  Ka'ana Resort's  string of lavish villas and suites provide the perfect springboard for nature and adventure. In Hopkins, a blend of culture and coast, the  Lodge at Jaguar Reef  offers an over-the-sea bar and private plunge pools, and hosted Prince William and Kate Middleton in their Seafront Suite in 2022. And in Placencia, beach haven and gateway to the Caribbean, the  Itz'ana Resort  serves up sumptuous spa treatments and three-course dinners on the beach.

Country Summary : Violent crime – such as sexual assault, home invasions, armed robberies, and murder – are common even during daylight hours and in tourist areas. A significant portion of violent crime is gang related. Due to high crime, travelers are advised to exercise caution while traveling to the south side of Belize City. Local police lack the resources and training to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents. Most crimes remain unresolved and unprosecuted.

Belize City – Level 3: Reconsider Travel

U.S. citizens should avoid traveling to Belize City. Historically much of the violent crime in Belize occurs in the Southside of Belize City and is gang related. This area (south of Haulover Creek Canal and continuing south to Fabers Road) does not overlap the typical tourism areas. Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

You must have a U.S. passport valid for the length of your stay, proof of an onward or return ticket, and sufficient funds to cover the cost of the length of stay. If you enter Belize by land, you will be charged different fees depending on whether your stay is less than or more than 24 hours. Belize does not require specific immunizations for visitors; vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can be found at  Belize vaccinations .

If you are visiting as a tourist, you do not require a visa. Visitors planning to stay more than 30 days must have their passport re-stamped by a local immigration office and pay an additional fee for every additional month they wish to stay, up to six months. For visits longer than six months, you may need to provide further documentation to the local immigration office explaining the reason for a longer stay, and you may need to pay additional fees. Traveling with Minors: If you are traveling with children, you may be asked by immigration officials to show U.S. birth certificates for each child. When children are not traveling with both parents, immigration officials often request documentation to establish the children are traveling with the permission of both parents. Documentation may include notarized letters from the parent(s), custody decree, adoption papers, or death certificates in situations where one or both parents are deceased.

HIV/AIDS Restrictions: We are unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Belize. Please verify this information with the  Embassy of Belize  before you travel.

Safety and Security

Belize is rated high for crime and has one of the highest per capita murder rates in the world. Gang members and other criminals use violent means to resolve disputes. Visitors should exercise caution throughout Belize, particularly in the south side of Belize City and remote areas along Belize’s borders due to high crime.

Crime: Crime may occur anywhere in Belize, and criminals frequently target tourists, including those at resorts and on the roads and river ways. Crime, including sexual assault, armed robbery, and murder remains high and is distributed evenly throughout the country. Sexual harassment and/or assault of persons traveling alone or in small groups have been reported. 

Most crimes remain unresolved and unprosecuted. A lack of capacity, resources, and training impedes the ability of local police to effectively investigate crime and apprehend offenders.

Thefts of cash and credit cards happen frequently in some areas of Belize. It is believed several credit card fraud rings are currently active in Belize, particularly in San Pedro.

Scams occur in Belize, especially in resort areas. Tourists, in general, are particularly vulnerable to these crimes, resulting in visitors being pick-pocketed, robbed and/or extorted. See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information on scams.

Victims of Crime: Report crimes to the local police by dialing 911 and contact the U.S. Embassy at 822-4011. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes. While the Embassy stands ready to assist the Belize authorities with any requests for technical assistance, the Embassy is not a law enforcement agency, cannot provide U.S. citizens with protection or investigate crimes against U.S. citizens, and has no jurisdiction to intervene in police or judicial processes. Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the U.S. Embassy in Belize for assistance.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities may not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unavailable outside of major cities to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance . 

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

LGBTI Travelers:  The Belizean government in September 2016 conceded the decriminalization of homosexuality, but is questioning a section of a July 2016 Supreme Court ruling that made “sexual orientation” a protected class. The Immigration Act prohibits “homosexual” persons from entering the country, but immigration authorities have not enforced that law. 

There continues to be significant hostile sentiment towards individuals who identify themselves as LGBTI. Tourist friendly areas, including San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, remain relatively open and welcoming to the LGBTI community. Outside of these areas, LGBTI persons, especially males, are reluctant to display affection in public (including holding hands) because incidents of verbal or physical assault have been reported. There have been some instances of violence reported against LGBTI individuals, and LGBTI groups have reported that the police at times refused to accept reports of crime from LGBTI persons.

Persons with Mobility Issues : While in Belize, individuals with disabilities will find accessibility and accommodation very different from in the United States. The law does not expressly prohibit discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual, and mental disabilities in employment, education, air or other transportation, access to health care, or the provision of other state services. The law does not provide for accessibility to persons with disabilities. Most public and private buildings and transportation are not accessible.

Emergency services will be either unavailable or significantly delayed. Serious injuries or illnesses normally require evacuation to another country.

Medical care for minor ailments is generally available in urban areas. Advanced medical treatment is very limited in Belize City or Belmopan and is extremely limited or unavailable in rural and remote areas. Pharmacy services are generally acceptable in larger cities. Specialized prescription medications may be completely unavailable. If you bring your own prescription medications, you must carry a current doctor’s prescription for each medication. We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare and Veteran’s Administration health benefits do not apply overseas.

Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on overseas insurance.

We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation.

Carry prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription.

Zika Virus : The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies Belize as a Zika risk area. The Zika virus is spread by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. These mosquitoes bite during the day and night. Zika can be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus. Infection during pregnancy can cause certain birth defects.

Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations recommended  by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For additional information, including travel advisories, visit the  CDC website .

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  Road conditions in Belize range from two-lane paved roads to dirt or gravel tracks. Roads often lack markings, reflectors, and shoulders, which can contribute to cars overturning. Even in urban areas, most streets lack lane markings and contribute to chaotic conditions. Bridges on the major highways are often only a single lane. The Manatee Road (Coastal Road), leading from the Western Highway east of Belmopan to Dangriga, is mostly unpaved, easily flooded after storms and without services.  Driving at night is strongly discouraged.

Roadside assistance can be difficult to summon as there are no public telephones along the road and emergency telephone numbers do not always function properly. While cell phone service is fairly reliable, reception in remote areas is spotty or non-existent.

Traffic Laws:  Drivers operate vehicles on the right side of the road. Valid U.S. or international driver’s permits are accepted in Belize only for a period of three months after initial entry.

If you are involved in a traffic accident, contact the local police and explain the emergency. If you or someone with you is critically injured, then go to the nearest hospital. If there are no injuries or risk of life, do not move the vehicles and wait for the police to arrive. If possible, take pictures before any vehicles are moved. Do not leave the scene if there are no injuries. If you hit someone on the road, stop and give assistance; contact the local police and report the accident.

Bicycles are numerous and constitute a regular part of traffic. Cyclists, like drivers, do not always obey basic traffic laws. They commonly fail to obey red lights or stop signs and often ride against traffic. Cyclists and pedestrians often do not have any reflectors or bright clothing and can be difficult to spot traveling along Belize’s poorly lit roads.

Public Transportation:  Taxis are prevalent in cities but not as common in rural areas. Taxis are identified by green license plates. Most visitors will need to call a taxi service to summon a taxi. Buses are used to travel between cities and are not common for short commutes. Uber and Lyft are not available in Belize. Secondhand and/or salvage vehicles and buses are often used for public transportation and may not have security features such as seatbelts and airbags. We suggest that you visit the Belize Tourism Bureau website.

Aviation Safety Oversight:  As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Belize, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the Government of Belize’s Civil Aviation Authority for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards. Best and Worst Times to Visit Belize

The best times to visit Belize are February through April when rainfall reaches the lowest point of the year. But some months are better than others.

Belize is mainly a cruise destination with more than 600,000 visitors arriving by ship and nearly 300,000 arriving by air for hotel stays every year, according to the Belize Tourism Board .

The main port for cruise arrivals is Belize City. It’s a common stop on some western Caribbean cruises because of the country’s natural attractions and friendly, English-speaking population. It also has one of the best shore excursions in the entire Caribbean: cave tubing down Caves Branch River.

But anyone who goes there should prepare for rain during most months of the year. We went during the “dry season” and watched gigantic black clouds roll over our heads. Luckily, it didn’t rain during our cave tubing shore excusion .

3 Best Times to Visit

Out of any month of the year, one of the best times to visit Belize is March. Cruise and airport arrivals jump because of spring break for families with children and because total rainfall is the second lowest of the year.

March temperatures are comfortably warm with an average high of 85 degrees Fahrenheit or 29 Celsius in Belize City, according to historical data from the National Meteorological Service of Belize. The average low is mostly at night at 71 Fahrenheit or about 22 Celsius. Rainfall has averaged about 2.4 inches in March over a 30-year history.

Another best time to go to Belize is April. It is warmer with an average high of 87 degrees Fahrenheit and an average low of 74 degrees.

Historically, the total rainfall is slightly lower at two inches a month. Despite the better weather, April is less popular than March, January and February.

The next best month to visit is February. Rainfall is slightly higher at nearly 3 inches and temperatures reach an average of 83 degrees during the day and 68 degrees during the night.

These three months represent the Belize dry season. Rain is much heavier during the rest of the year.

May is a possible time to visit because of even warmer temperatures. But the risk of rain is higher, especially late in the month.

Worst Time to Visit: Belize Hurricane Season

The Belize hurricane season from June through November is the worst time to visit because the average rainfall jumps to one of the highest levels of any destination in the Caribbean.

The hurricane season in Belize is similar to the one for the entire Caribbean, which begins in June and runs through November. For Belize, this rainy season also goes into December.

Anyone who loves plenty of rain should visit Belize in September, when the average rainfall for the month is more than 11 inches or five times higher than April. As a result, it is no surprise that cruise and airport arrivals reach the lowest point of the year during September.

Not far behind September in total rainfall are June and October with 10 inches apiece. July, August and November also are not far behind with an average eight to nine inches. These months of June through November are the same months as the Caribbean hurricane season.

Other Times to Visit

January and May are transition months between the dry and hurricane seasons. They fall between the two extremes with about four to five inches of rain each month.

But temperatures for the two months are much different with an average high of 82 degrees in January and 89 degrees in May.

Anyone who likes the beach and ocean swimming should go in May and not January if they have a choice in when to go. They will have more comfortable conditions in May.

The other reason May is better is that it has slightly lower total rainfall than January.

That leaves December. It is the most popular month to visit Belize for cruise passengers, but it also has higher average rainfall at more than seven inches during the month.

Temperatures are lowest of the year with an average high of 81.7 degrees and a low of 67 degrees.

Average Monthly Weather

The average monthly weather for Belize has temperatures in the low to upper 80s Fahrenheit or the upper 20s to low 30s Celsius. Rainfall ranges from a low point of two inches in March and April to more than 11 inches in September.

January has the coolest weather of the year along with December. The average high temperature is 82 Fahrenheit or about 28 Celsius. Rainfall is moderate for Belize but high for other Caribbean destinations at five inches. Tourism is the second highest of the year.

Rainfall drops to three inches while the average high temperature edges up to 83 Fahrenheit or 28 Celsius. Tourism drops slightly. It’s a better month to visit than January.

Tourism reaches the highest point of the year thanks to spring break. Rainfall reaches the lowest point of the year at two inches. The average high makes a bigger climb to 85 Fahrenheit or 29 Celsius.

Belize weather in April is the best of the year. Like March, it has only two inches of rain historically during the month. But tourism drops—prices may drop as well—and the average highs move up to 87 Fahrenheit or 31 Celsius.

Tourism drops quite a bit in May. Rainfall edges up to four inches. The average high jumps to the highest point of the year to 89 Fahrenheit or 32 Celsius. This is the month to go for people who like it warm and humid. But go early in the month because hurricane season is getting close.

The high-risk weather arrives in June. The average rainfall skyrockets to 10 inches. It’s a good month to go only for people who like a lot of rain.

July weather in Belize is not much different from June. It’s warm, humid and wet. Like June, it averages 10 inches of rain.

August oddly takes a small break from the 10 inches of rain in June and July and the 10 to 11 inches in September and October. It averages only seven inches during the month. But like June and July, visitors should plan on a high risk of rain.

The prize for the worst month of the year goes to September with average rainfall of 11 inches. Temperatures maintain an average high in the upper 80s Fahrenheit that began in April.

Second place for worst month to visit Belize goes to October along with June and July. It also averages 10 inches of rain. The heat starts to ease with an average high of 86 Fahrenheit or 30 Celsius.

Cruise tourism begins to pick up in November as the hurricane season winds down. The average high temperature drops another two degrees. Rainfall historically is seven inches like August and December.

December is the most popular month of the year to visit Belize for cruise visitors. Temperatures drop to the lowest point of the year at 82 Fahrenheit or 28 Celsius. Rainfall at seven inches is higher than the coming dry season months but lower than the rest of the hurricane season.

January is a fabulous time to travel! Whether you’re looking to escape the winter cold and hit the beach, you’re up for adventure in a new city, or you’re wishing for a winter wonderland to enjoy, here’s some amazing destinations.

1. Costa Rica (one of the best places to visit in January for sun)

Average temp:  high 78, low 64 (varied by region) Fly into:  Juan Santamaria International Airport, San Jose

If you’re looking for the best countries to visit in January, then Costa Rica absolutely needs to be on your radar! Zipline through cloud forests, watch monkeys and toucans dance around in the trees, dip your toes into luxurious sandy beaches and enjoy great food, Costa Rica has so much to offer visitors.

December through April is dry season, as it’s when you’ll see the best weather in Costa Rica. Although the temperatures vary based on which region you travel to, it’s still a great getaway than being stuck in the cold back home.

Visit the famous Arenal Volcano and enjoy the hot springs in La Fortuna. Still in the mountainous region, there are plenty of things to do in Monteverde , including ziplining and walking the suspension bridges through the cloud forests.

For a perfect beach getaway, head west to Tamarindo, where you can hit the water surfing, kayaking or stand up paddle boarding. With hotels and restaurants sprinkled throughout the beach, it’s a great spot to spend a few days.

Austria is a landlocked country between Germany and Italy, located in Central Europe. The alps extend from the west to the east and create a perfect winter wonderland every year.

The weather in Austria in January is usually between 0 and 50 Fahrenheit. The higher one travels, the colder it gets.

The best way to get to Austria is via the Vienna airport, located in the east. Other options include the Salzburg airport, Innsbruck airport or even the much larger Munich airport in Germany.

3. Colombia

The South American country of Colombia is a great destination in January – in fact, it’s one of the best weather times to visit of the entire year! In January, the sun is shining, the weather is warm (though there is a huge variety of average temperatures throughout the country), and the rain is low. 

In general, Colombia is a great place to visit, no matter the time of year. It’s a very inexpensive country to travel to, and there’s a wide variety of things to see and do. The capital city of Bogota has an old town filled with colonial architecture, cobblestoned streets, and a wide variety of historical buildings and world class museums. 

Or, you can visit the Coffee Region of Colombia, such as the little, colorful town of Salento. Here, you can visit the coffee farms of Colombia or go hiking in the Cocora Valley, a magical hike into the mountains, where you can see the famous wax palms of Colombia – the tallest palms in the world that grow up to 200 feet high!

Finally, a must visit spot in Colombia is the coastal city of Cartagena, a photogenic, absolutely gorgeous colonial walled city with colorful buildings covered in plants and flowers.

If you’re looking for an epic winter adventure, consider visiting Iceland in January. 

While the days may be short here, you’ll get to enjoy Iceland’s spectacular scenery to yourself, given that the summer crowds have long departed. Thailand is an incredible place, and one of the best countries to visit in January. With a large variety of destinations to see within Thailand, you’ll need to decide what kind of experience you want to have, and plan your vacation accordingly.

If you’re looking for beautiful temples, rich in historic architecture loaded with history, then Bangkok or Chiang Mai might be the right spot for you. Stay in the city a few days to soak in the sights. Be sure to take a food tour, and if your’e in Bangkok, visit the floating markets.

Although it’s right in the middle of the season, January is perfect for a trip to the Maldives as it’s right after the holidays and just before Valentine’s Day, so the prices are really great during these times. You can even find some  affordable water villas  if you dig enough, and you can maybe score a nice room at  this resort that I’m sure you’ve seen on Instagram already.

Getting there is easy, as there’s one main airport used as a hub, located next to the Capital city of Male. From here, you reach your resort island by either speed boat, seaplane, or a combination of the two, but this is handled by the accommodation itself so you really don’t have to worry about anything while on your trip.

And if you usually have a long list of activities to do while on vacation, you’ll have to adjust when in the Maldives: here, you can only lay on a beach or float in the water.

Of course, you can do various water activities like snorkeling, diving, or going on sunset cruises, or you can lay on a sunbed, hammock, or on a massage table, but you get the point. There’s really no better place in the world to relax than this tropical paradise!

Singapore is one of the best countries to visit in January for those looking for a warm and sunny getaway. The weather is hot and humid year round but January is one of the cooler months making it a great time to visit.

The temperature will still be hot so it is best to see indoor attractions during midday and early afternoon. The evening is a great time to walk around and explore as Singapore is considered one of the safest countries in the world.

One of the top and most unique  Singapore attractions  is Gardens by the Bay, a large nature park with both outdoor and indoor gardens and conservatories. Don’t miss Supertree Grove, made up of huge tree-shaped vertical gardens, that puts on free light and music shows every night.

Similar to Canada, Mexico and Australia, the USA has a variety of climates and destinations perfect for January. And although it’s impossible to choose just one, these popular January destinations in the USA are all great for wintertime travel.

Vail or Breckenridge , Colorado offer some of the best ski resorts in the world! If you’re looking for a perfect winter getaway with fluffy white snow, consider the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

Hawaii is an obvious choice if you’re looking for warm vacations in January in the US, since it’s average high temperatures hover around 80 degrees throughout the islands.

Watch the sunset on Haleakala in Maui , take a helicopter ride over the NaPali Coast in Kauai, visit the impressive Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, or hike to the top of Diamond Head to overlook Waikiki Beach in Oahu. Hawaii is full of adventure!

Another hot spot for a best place to vacation in January is Puerto Rico . There’s so many things to do in Old San Juan , including visiting the 500+ year old fort, El Morro. And if you’re looking for a perfect beach, head to Flamenco Beach Puerto Rico on the nearby island of Culebra.

21. El Salvador

El Salvador is an underrated destination in Central America, and one of the best countries to visit in January. A great spot to visit in El Salvador is the town of El Tunco.

Located on the Pacific coast, El Tunco, El Salvador , is a great getaway in the middle of winter. The weather is hot and sunny, with temperatures averaging in the high 80s. January is one of the best times to visit El Tunco because it’s the middle of the dry season, so the chance of a downpour is minimal.

The best things to see and do in El Tunco involve enjoying its beautiful beaches, which are perfect for swimming and surfing. You can also sunbathe but some of the beach areas are a bit pebbly, especially right after high tide.

If you want a chill vibe, you can take some yoga classes and relax in a beach hammock. Or if you’re up for some adventure, you can explore the beach caves (low tide only) or go waterfall hiking.

There are also a number of restaurants and bars in the town. The best thing to eat in El Tunco is pupusas, the national food of El Salvador! These thick corn tortillas are filled with meat, cheese, and/or beans.

If you want to party 24/7, there are a number of party-focused hostels in town. If you want to get a good night’s sleep after going out but still be close to the action, stay at Eco del Mar Hotel .

El Tunco is easy to get to from the San Salvador airport. It’s just a short drive to the coast on well-paved highways. You can hire a driver in advance, rent a car, or just call an Uber at the airport.

If you’re looking for a fun, affordable vacation destination in January, El Tunco is definitely worth considering.

Serbia is the best place to vacation in January if you love Christmas and lengthened holiday seasons. As a country with Christian Orthodox as its major population, Serbia celebrates Christmas on January 7th. And on top of that, in addition to the New Year on January 1st, they also celebrate Serbian New Year based on the Julian calendar on the 15th. 

The best way to visit Serbia is to fly to Nikola Tesla International Airport in Belgrade, or you can easily travel by car from  the neighboring countries in Balkan . 

Serbia is quite small, so you can easily travel from the north to the south of the country for a week or two. Depending on the location, there are many things to do in Serbia in January. From enjoying the nightlife scene in Belgrade to spending your winter wonderland in popular ski resorts like Zlatibor or Kopaonik, there is always something for everyone!

For accommodation, you can easily find budget-friendly hotels and vacation rentals in each city. If you have a little extra budget for your accommodation, take a chance to stay at the Moskva Hotel in the heart of Belgrade. 23. Philippines

With the dry season in full swing, the Philippines is one of the best places to visit in January for sun . You can expect the weather to be hot and humid, yet there will always be a beach nearby when you feel the need to cool off.

One of the best places to visit is the island of Palawan, which has been voted to be “the most beautiful island in the world” multiple times by Travel + Leisure’s Best of Awards . 

Once you’re there, it’s easy to see why. In the northern part of the Palawan near El Nido you’ll find beautiful islands, turquoise-blue lagoons, and jagged limestone cliffs. Thus, island hopping is one of  the best things to do in Palawan !

If you don’t want to take the detour through Puerto Princesa – the capital of Palawan – you can fly to El Nido directly via Airswift from Manila. Some of the best places to stay in El Nido are Frendz Hostel and Blue Mango . 

If you’re adventurous, you can also venture out to other places on the island, like San Vicente and Port Barton. San Vicente is known for its 14-kilometer-long beach, whereas Port Barton is a small, laid-back town attracting travelers from all over the world. From here, you can hike through the jungle to get to low-key beaches and even a picturesque waterfall, kayak around the bay, or go snorkeling for sea turtles.  

As you can see, no matter where you go in Palawan, you can’t go wrong! You’ll have a wonderful vacation, perfect for a January getaway!

24. Jamaica (another favorite on this list of best countries to visit in January)

One of the best beach vacations in January is Jamaica. In the middle of the Caribbean Sea, the hurricane season is over and the rush of holiday travelers is gone. However, January is one of the busiest months for visitors to the island, as many are trying to escape the winter back home.

Relax and rest in luxury at an all-inclusive resort in Montego Bay, Negril or Ocho Rios. From family friendly options to adults-only resorts, there’s something for everyone. Although, make sure to save up for it in advance, as January has some of the highest prices.

Venture off the resort on a day trip to Dunn’s River Falls, ziplining, bamboo rafting, take a sunset cruise or Blue Hole, Negril , amongst many others.

Or, rent a car and explore for yourself. Just be sure to ask your hotel which nearby areas to avoid, as there is some gang crime in Jamaica. And definitely get back before dark.

By the way, Jamaica is a great stop on some of the best young adult cruises , since it’s a destination with so much action and culture.

Whether you’re looking to sit on the beach for a week or soak in the amazing Jamaican food and culture, you’ll love a trip to this tropical paradise!

25. Morocco

January might just be the best time of year for a trip to Morocco. Avoid the hot sticky summer, avoid the busy season and make the most of the moderate temperatures in Morocco during winter. 

Marrakech, Essaouira and the Sahara Desert are just some of the destinations you’ll want to add to your Morocco itinerary.  

The beautiful chaos synonymous with Morocco is found right in the heart of the medinas of Marrakech.  And you can start your journey here with a flight into Marrakech Menara Airport.

Book the Riad Tizwa in Marrakech for a stay to remember, wander Jemaa el-Fna Square in the early evening, shop in the labyrinth of souks and stroll through the Jardin Majorelle. And be sure to dine at all the best restaurants in Marrakech while you’re in town.

But don’t forget to see what else Morocco has to offer in winter. Marrakech is the perfect base to arrange a Sahara Desert tour or a beach adventure to Essaouira. 

Book a visit to Merzouga or M’hamid, to see the rolling sand dunes of the Sahara. And on your way include a visit to Ouarzazate to admire the incredible kasbahs of this region.  The Kasbah Aït Benhaddou is possibly the most magnificent, made famous by the many movies filmed here.

If you’re looking for a vacation in January, then the beautiful country of Sweden is a fantastic option! With spectacular cities, unspoiled forests, and breathtaking lakes, it’s no surprise that over 7.5 million people visit every year. 

Sweden will take your breath away no matter what time of year you visit, but there’s something special about visiting in January! 

During this time of year, the ground is often covered in snow and temperatures will be well below freezing, although that’s the perfect excuse to treat yourself to a hot chocolate and a Fika!

Sweden is one of the best places to visit in January to extend that ‘festive feeling’ as many of the winter palaces might still be running, especially earlier in the month. 

Sweden’s largest airport is Stockholm Arlanda which is just 39 km (24 miles) from the capital city. This often means Stockholm is the first port of call, and you’ll find tons of fascinating things to do here – especially in January! 

First of all, you’ll have plenty of ice skating opportunities but the main spot to visit is Kungsträdgården ! Then, you can head to Hammarbybacken if you’re looking to ski or head out on a winter cruise of the archipelago!

Other fantastic places to visit in Sweden during January include Swedish Lapland, Abisko National Park, Gothenburg, and Salen.

27. Grenada (another awesome contender for best place to vacation in January)

The island of Grenada in the Caribbean is one of the best islands to visit in January. Located at the southern end of the chain of Caribbean islands, Grenada is still rooted deeply in culture and nature to experience, without a whole lot of big chain influences.

January is an amazing time to visit, as the temperature is roughly 86 degrees year round during the day, and the water stays nice and warm too! It’s the perfect getaway from the winter cold to enjoy warm water, beautiful beaches, waterfalls, a tropical climate and Caribbean culture.

The easiest way to get to Grenada is by flying into Maurice Bishop International Airport. Once you arrive, you can either grab a taxi (they look like small buses) or make your way to a shuttle if your accommodation offers transportation.

There’s a huge range of accommodation options, including many homestay options, more casual resorts, all the way to luxury all inclusives. My recommendation for an eco-friendly boutique hotel is the True Blue Bay Resort , while if you’re looking for something all inclusive, Spice Island Beach Resort .

January does fall within Grenada’s high season, so be prepared for more crowds than if you went during the rainy season (summer months).

Definitely visit one of Grenada’s Best Beaches while there, and try to take an island wide guided tour to experience waterfalls, sulphur springs, cocoa farms, local distilleries or more! Plus, the world-famous underwater attraction, snorkeling the Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park is a must-do while visiting the island.

You’ll want to stay in Grenada at least a week to experience all there is to see and do! Grenada is one of the best countries to visit in January. It’s an amazing destination with the welcoming and vibrant Caribbean culture that you don’t want to miss!

South Africa is one of the best countries in the world for a January vacation. It’s the ideal spot to take a breath and enjoy life.

January in South Africa sees the weather at its best, particularly in the western regions. Summer below the equator is in full swing, and the air is warm and dry.

However you dream of spending your time, this sizable country is teeming with great adventures and awe-inspiring beauty just for you!  Come to South Africa to see the iconic wildlife, enjoy the most picturesque road trips of your life, or explore its astounding urban highlights. 

Or try a shark-cage dive off the coast! Whichever activity you choose, your options are countless.

29. England

England  is an underrated country to visit in January. It’s the perfect mix of winter wonderland and mild temperatures, depending on where you visit.

For example, Oxford and Birmingham typically see dustings of snow throughout January. You may even find enough snow a few days a year to build a small snowman!

But places like Brighton Beach will remain snow-less. There are even days London will be as sunny as in summer!

The mild temperatures attract visitors who are looking to escape the freezing cold of Canada or Scandinavia, but don’t want to pay the inflated prices of a beach vacation. Temperatures average 5C (41F).

Don’t forget to pack a light coat and some waterproof boots , as it can drizzle throughout January.

Luckily, the best things to do in the UK aren’t summer-based.

Having high tea in Covent Garden, touring Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford upon Avon, listening to live music at a pub, and enjoying British stand-up at local comedy houses are all great indoor activities to take advantage of.

There are plenty of ways to save money while still enjoying everything the country has to offer. For starters, take advantage of the many free museums and galleries.

You can also find cheap eats by avoiding tourist traps and sticking to local pubs. And finally, take advantage of the many cheap or free walking tours available in most cities.

The UK is easily accessible from anywhere in the world.

Major airports include London Heathrow (LHR) and London Gatwick (LGW). Stanstead is another option, but then you’ll need to take a long train journey. 

To get around, take trains for cheap day trips from London to places like Bath and Oxford.

30. India (an underrated one on this guide for warm vacations in January)

While India may be on your travel bucket list , January is also a great time to cross it off!

January in India means it’s dry season, so you don’t need to worry about rain like you do during monsoon season. While India is a large country, narrowing down what you want to see and do will help determine what weather you’ll face and where to fly into .

The northern part of India is home to the famous Taj Mahal. Located in Agra, the Taj Mahal can be visited via day trip from Delhi. One of the new 7 wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal’s grand and impressive architecture is stunning in real life!

In southern India, the popular towns of Bengaluru (aka Bangalore) is a busy city with so many things to do. Bangalore is famous for the Lalbagh Botanical Garden, the Bengaluru Palace, Bull Temple and Cuban Park. Nearby Mysuru (aka Mysore) is a great day trip or weekend getaway from Bangalore. Be sure to watch the lighting of the Mysore Palace – stunning!

If you’re looking for a beach destination in India, Goa is the place to be. With gentle waves, swaying palm trees and beautiful, relaxing hotels, Goa is a great spot to relax and unwind in India. It’s truly a great destination, and one of the best countries to visit in January.

31. The Gambia

Average temp:  high 91, low 65 Fly into:  Banjul International Airport, Banjul

Perched on the west coast of Africa is a small but charming country known as The Gambia. The Gambia is renowned for its lengthy swathes of golden sand beaches, freshly caught fish and smiling locals.

The Gambia has 2 distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. The dry season runs from November to May and is the best time to visit. The temperature at this time of year is pleasant – roughly 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) – and you can expect bright sunshine on most days.

January is also a great time of year to visit due to the country’s annual Banjul Demba Cultural Festival. Here, you’ll witness traditional music and dance performances in the country’s capital city.

The Gambia is a very small country and so only houses one international airport: Banjul International Airport.

Most visitors to The Gambia choose to base themselves in Serrekunda, a vibrant town set behind a glorious stretch of beach, fringed by lazy palm trees.

Serrekunda is a mere 30 minute drive from the airport. It’s easy to grab a taxi from the airport, or you can pre-arrange a taxi with your hotel or via a taxi company beforehand.

Alternatively, you can hire a car in The Gambia . I’d personally recommend pre-booking a taxi from a reputable company as some taxis at the airport are in questionable condition.

There are numerous hotels in Serrekunda for you to choose from but a personal favourite of mine is Luigi’s Complex. It has a very friendly and laid-back vibe and is only a short walk from the beach.

32. New Zealand (by far one of the best countries to visit in January)

A bucket-list destination for many, New Zealand is at the top of its game in January. This summer month brings some of the warmest temperatures in the country, delighting visitors that enjoy sunny days at the beach.

New Zealand is a surprisingly large country – a fact that many people underestimate when planning a vacation. The amount of time you have will affect the places you are able to visit, however, these are some amazing summer spots in Aotearoa.

If you’re able to include them in your itinerary, you’ll be sure to come away happy. After all, New Zealand is one of the best countries to visit in January!

Paihia is located in the Bay of Islands, and though it is beautiful at any time of year, it’s particularly vibrant during the summer season. Known for its stunning beaches, uninhabited islands, settled weather and marine life, this is a must-see in January. Kerikeri is the closest airport to Paihia, but many choose to fly into Auckland and drive up.

Moving down the North Island, the Coromandel Peninsula is another summer-time favourite for locals and visitors alike . Significant highlights include Hot Water Beach (where you can dig your own natural hot pool in the sand), Cathedral Cove and New Chums Beach, all of which are best enjoyed in the warmth of the summer season. Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga airports all service this region.

Finally, a summertime trip to Fiordland should be on your radar. Though this area experiences a lot of rain right throughout the year, this will be your best chance at seeing it on a nice day.

When the weather is still, the mirror reflection of  Milford Sound on the water really is incomparable. Queenstown is the closest airport to Milford Sound, though many choose to stay in Te Anau.

One of the best places to visit in January for sun is the European island of Malta . Actually, Malta is made up of 3 islands, Malta, Gozo, and Comino.

Compared to other European countries,  Malta in winter  is usually very sunny and in January temperatures can go up to 20 degrees Celsius which on a sunny day feels very pleasant.

One of the best things about going in January is that fewer tourists venture to the island which is mainly considered a summer destination. But what most people fail to realize is that it is the best time for going hiking and exploring the ancient towns.

Malta has a long history, and if you get rainy or windy days it’s perfect to explore underground where you can walk through the World War Two Shelters or discover the old catacombs in Rabat. On the other hand, if the weather is nice, you can easily go for a quick dip in the crystal-clear water.

There are numerous flights connecting Malta with the rest of Europe. In addition, you can take the boat directly from Sicily in Italy.

Getting around Malta by bus is easy, it costs 1.50 Euros for a ticket that lasts you for 2 hours (including bus changes.) On top of that, they have tap and pay so there is no need for cash.

34. Turks and Caicos (another favorite on this list for best beach vacations in January)

Last but certainly not least is the dreamy island chain of Turks and Caicos. Definitely worthy of a spot on this list of the best countries to visit in January, Turks and Caicos has unbelievable white sand beaches with the most turquoise water you’ll ever see.

A beach destination with the right mix of good food and water activities, Turks and Caicos is a laid-back island chain where the term ‘island time’ could have been created.

The whimsical nature of the island is perfect for a January getaway when all that matters is what time you should re-apply your sunblock . (By the way, be sure to use ocean-safe sunblock at all times to protect marine life.)

Staying on the main island of Providenciales doesn’t have to break the bank, either. It’s possible to do Turks and Caicos on a budget , without sacrificing a good time on the island chain.

While there, be sure to visit the best beaches on Turks and Caicos . Grace Bay Beach is the most popular, but moving away from the busy tourist spot will provide you with amazing views where you *might* just be the only one there.

Fabulous post Nikki! It just shows how many fantastic places there are for holidays in January. When I was younger I would have been tempted by the tropical islands... but now I have learned to ski, places like Austria and Switzerland for would be the best part - those snowy mountain views are beeeautiful!

Things to bring for a trip to Belize

Buying your plane ticket to Belize and not forgetting your passport are only half the equation to enjoying a wonderful vacation in Belize. Before you head out the door, make sure you know exactly what to pack for Belize to ensure a great time.

The balmy temperatures and ample sunshine are big reasons why Belize is such a popular vacation destination . Bring lots of loose, light, breathable clothing. Belize is a very casual country, so you won’t need any formal wear even when dining in restaurants.

Nights can occasionally be cool, so be sure to bring a sweater or hoodie with you just in case. Definitely be sure to leave your scarves, mittens, and other winter wear at home, though!

The sun is a powerful force in Belize. Individuals with fair skin should make sure that they have adequate sunscreen and other forms of protection from the sun like hats and sunglasses.

Prepare for Adventure

If you plan on doing more than relaxing on the beach, be sure to bring everything you’ll need for inland explorations. Items to include in your suitcase: hiking shoes, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, a flashlight, and insect repellant.

Whether you just want to dip your toes in the surf or head out deeper to enjoy world-class scuba diving and snorkeling, be sure to bring a bathing suit, beach accessories, flip-flops, and beach towels. You can also bring your snorkeling and/or dive gear if you have it, but the good news is that these items can also be purchased and/or rented in Belize.

The currency in Belize is the Belizean Dollar (BZD), permanently pegged at two to one to the U.S. dollar. The good news is that American cash and credit cards are accepted pretty much everywhere. A great tip is to make sure you have enough cash on you when you arrive to make it to a hotel or bank.

Medications and Toiletries

If you forget some of your daily toiletries at home, you can find it in Belize without too much effort. But definitely be sure to bring any prescription medications that you take as well as a note from your doctor to avoid any mix-ups.
