You’ve booked your ticket, made your restaurant reservations, and now it’s finally time to pack for your big trip. While we’re sure you’ll have a lovely time no matter what you’re wearing, the best travel clothes and accessories can help make that long-awaited adventure go just a little more smoothly (and make you look that much better in your photos afterward).

When it comes to a travel wardrobe, we favor versatile, easy-to-pack pieces you can wear all day without having to sacrifice valuable exploring time for an outfit change. Since we’re always testing products here at Travel + Leisure , we’ve included eight options personally tested by our team (we can confirm that our favorite travel pants are squat-approved and that we comfortably walked for more than eight hours in the walking shoes below). Here are some of our favorite travel clothes and accessories, from cashmere sweaters to comfortable sneakers and everything in between.

Best Leggings

Lululemon wunder train high-rise tight.

Smooth fabric, a fit that stays consistent across activities, and excellent comfort put these a cut above other leggings.

They’re a bit thin for cold conditions.

Sometimes you just need a good pair of leggings, and Lululemon’s are at the top of the pack for a reason. We found the Wunder Trains to be form-fitting without feeling constricting, and they feature a drawstring at the waist for extra comfort. They never felt tight even after long flights (and the ensuing bloating) or like they were stretching out too much, and the material is smooth and soft with no pilling in sight. Two hidden pockets stretch enough to hold a phone, headphones, ID, and ticket without any noticeable fit difference. They are on the thinner side, leaving legs a bit chilly in flight but very comfortable in warmer climates. Despite that, we didn’t find any transparency in the fabric at all. We tested the 25-inch inseam, but there are also 23-, 28-, and 31-inch variations available in 15 different colors and sizes that range from 0 to 20.

Best Travel Pants

Libin cargo joggers.

These casual pants move with you and provide comfort in a good range of sizes and colors.

They run tight in the legs and are a bit prone to wrinkles.

These extremely comfortable, breathable, and affordable pants moved with us through constant motion, walks, and long drives during testing. The fabric is incredibly soft, and the pockets are great for storing whatever you want to keep close by, with two large zippered front pockets plus extra cargo pockets and one rear zipped pocket. The stretchy, elastic waistband features a drawstring for extra adjustability, and the ankles have a nice level of elasticity for a jogger style. The pants are on the tighter side fit-wise, so you may want to size up for maximum comfort on long flights, and we also found them to be a bit prone to wrinkles. They do have UPF 50+ sun protection built into the fabric, which is great for sunny destinations. There are 13 colors to choose from and sizes up to 3XL.

Best Packable Jacket

Everlane the renew long liner.

This packable jacket offers the cozy feel of a puffer without the bulk, plus split zippers for extra adjustability.

It’s an oversized style and you might need an extra layer underneath in extra cold conditions.

A long jacket gives any outfit an extra touch of style, so finding a packable one is especially exciting. This quilted jacket from Everlane is easy to pack down into a cube or corner of your bag, and the quilting gives it some extra fluff without making it too large. It didn’t wrinkle even after more than eight hours of being stuffed in a packing cube during our testing period, and the split zipper allows for good ventilation and freedom of movement. The soft collar keeps your neck warm in the wind, and the jacket overall feels like it’s a high-quality build that will last. We felt cozy in a range of temperatures, and the oversized fit makes it easy to layer under on extra frigid days. It comes in four neutral shades (black, olive, brown, and pretty blush) and sizes from XXS to XL.

Best Sweater

Naadam the original cashmere sweater.

This high-quality sweater comes in a wide range of sizes and colors.

The sleeves are designed to run short, and you may need to do some occasional maintenance against pilling.

We love this Naadam sweater for its value and high quality, paired with an extensive range of colors and sizes. Right now there are 21 colors available, with nine core neutrals and a rotating set of limited-edition seasonal shades, and it comes in sizes ranging from XXS to XXL. While we didn't personally test this option, the sweater is made from 100 percent Mongolian cashmere so it will stay soft against your skin. The sleeves are designed to run short for easier layering, though taller shoppers may find this a bit annoying. And like all cashmere, it tends to be a bit high-maintenance, but we think it’s worth the tradeoff.

Best Long-sleeve Shirt

Ibex women's travel henley long sleeve.

Ibex

This simple shirt is a versatile classic.

We wish there were more color options.

For frequent travelers, it’s hard not to fill your entire wardrobe with merino wool — a naturally moisture-wicking and odor-resistant material — especially when you’re on the road and really don’t want to have to do laundry. This classic henley has great reviews, with seven snaps that let you stay as buttoned-up (or not) as you please while adding some visual interest, and it’s just fitted enough to be flattering without being clingy. The smooth finish of the fabric and flatlock seams keep you comfortable, there are five colors available, and it's even machine-washable (though you will need to line-dry it).

Best Sweats

Aether w foundation hoodie.

These sweats will keep you comfortable but still looking put-together.

There aren’t a lot of colors available, and they’re on the expensive side.

Sometimes when you’re traveling you simply want to take a break and be cozy. Enter the Aether set, one of our favorite matching sets for travel . You’ll be plenty comfortable in the French terry fabric, with touches like raglan sleeves and cover-stitched seams that keep you from looking frumpy. Match the hoodie with either the cropped sweatpants or shorts, which are both made from the same soft French terry cotton and feature a ribbed waistband and flat, braided drawcord with leather tips as a thoughtful touch. Bonus: all of Aether’s products come with a lifetime guarantee.

Quince Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Dress

This dress is soft, flattering, affordable, and responsibly made.

It may be a bit on the low-cut side for some builds, and we wish it came in a few more colors.

Looking for a travel dress that does everything you need a dress to do and then some? The Tencel material in this model from Quince is super soft and light, as well as sustainably made. The skirt is long enough to comfortably sit down on the train in and get you into religious sites without concern. It's also accented with two side-seam pockets for smaller items. Meanwhile, the fitted top is both flattering and easy to layer, and provides a nice level of shape to the cut. In addition to eco-friendly materials and Global Recycle Standard-certified yarn, it’s also made in Sedex-certified factories that aim to improve working conditions. It’s also affordable enough that you won’t stress out about packing it and machine-washable for easy cleaning.

Best Bathing Suit

Andie the amalfi.

Adjustable straps, a simple but stylish build, and superior comfort put this swimsuit at the top of the list.

It can take a while to dry, but you won’t feel uncomfortable during the process.

Andie’s Amalfi is simple, sleek, and straight to the point, and that’s why it was our top pick for the best overall one-piece in our Best Swimsuits for Women roundup. During testing, we found that the stylish, slim straps provide plenty of support even with their delicate appearance, keeping everything in place even while swimming laps or hitting the beach. It’s comfortable to wear all day, with no digging in from the straps on top or creeping and crawling up from the edges on the bottom, and it stays soft even when saturated. While it isn’t the fastest-drying swimsuit out there, we thought it was still comfortable no matter what level of damp it is. We didn't notice any stretching during drying, either, even after we thre the swimsuit in a dryer. There are also a whole slew of styles to choose from, with smooth, ribbed, and novelty fabrics (for a total of 10 different colors), sizes from XS to 3XL, and even a long torso cut option.

Best Crossbody Bag

Baggallini everywhere bagg.

Others We Liked

The Everywhere Bagg boasts a plenitude of pockets as well as a comfortable, adjustable strap and a wide color range.

Some people might prefer a divided main pocket.

If you want a travel bag that will hold nearly everything and the kitchen sink — likely in its own designated pockets — go for the Baggallini Everywhere. This crossbody bag has plentiful pockets that will keep you reaching for it across various trip styles and seasons, as well as a spacious main cavity (some might prefer a divider in there, but we also like that it allows for a variety of organization styles). We thought it was very comfortable to carry thanks to the adjustable strap, which you can shorten all the way up to a shoulder bag. The fabric is also slightly water-resistant, so your belongings won’t get soaked in any unexpected storms. The bag comes with a removable RFID-blocking wristlet, as well as a special phone pocket and sleeve for your luggage trolley. Choose from 10 colors, including standard neutrals, bright reds, prints, and even one with shearling accents.

Vivaia Square-toe Mary Jane

These flats are just as comfortable and supportive as sneakers, while also keeping your feet dry and your outfit looking put-together.

They run narrow, but you can choose to order the wide style.

A comfortable, versatile pair of flats can see you through all manner of travel days. This pair from Vivaia was our best overall pick out 29 pairs of flats we tested . They has plenty of room in the square toe so your feet won’t feel squished but also won’t feel like they’re flopping around. The strap across the top helps prevent heel slippage and is perforated all the way through, so you just find your ideal fit wherever it may be. They’re also comfortable right out of the box, almost ridiculously so thanks to the built-in cushioning, as well as extremely breathable. No need to worry about rain, either: our feet didn’t get damp at all in the summer showers during testing. Despite their light weight, these flats feel extremely durable and don’t catch dust or dirt. They even pack flat and won’t take up too much room in your luggage. They are on the narrow side, but the brand offers a separate wide style in three of the six available colors, so there’s a pair for everyone from size five to 11.

Best Walking Shoes

Rykä devotion x.

These absurdly comfortable shoes feel like a firm mattress pad, with perfect levels of breathability, support, and softness.

They’re not the most versatile style, and not everyone likes a roomy toe-box.

When you’re really pounding the pavement, opt for the Ryka Devotion X, which boasts a super-soft inside and supportive outside. We found that they fit extremely well, with a little extra room in the toe-box for wiggle room, and our feet stayed firmly in place while walking without getting a single blister during our testing period. There’s also plenty of support in the sole, with enough spring that it feels like walking on a cloud, providing structure without sacrificing mobility or flexibility. The inside feels like a firm mattress pad, slightly thick and firm, while still giving way underfoot in a way that redistributes weight. The outside is super breathable and feels well-made and sturdy. There are eight colors to choose from in sizes five to 12, as well as both medium and wide widths.

Travel + Leisure / Sahara Borja

Best Hiking Boots

Salomon x ultra 4 mid gore-tex women's.

These ultra-waterproof boots are light enough that they feel like a running shoe.

They don’t have quite enough traction for very advanced hikes.

If your trip involves hitting the trails, pick up a pair of the Salomon X Ultra 4. Despite their sturdy build, they still feel lightweight, almost like a pair of running shoes. Even if you slip in a puddle, your feet will still stay totally dry (ours did, even when tramping through mud and snow). They’ll still look as good as new when you wipe them down after your hike, too. They don’t require any break-in period, which is great for hiking boots, and gave us a perfectly snug fit while still giving toes room to breathe. We experienced some minor slippage on slick surfaces and rocks, but otherwise the traction is good. Choose from four different color options and sizes from five to 11.

Travel + Leisure / Anna Popp

Best Sandals

Reef cushion vera cruz slide.

These classic slides are easy to style and feel tailor-made for your feet.

The rings on the top are plastic, not metal, but you likely won’t even notice.

For warm-weather travels, pick up these super-cushioned sandals. The leather on top is soft and pliable, while the sole is contoured and extremely comfortable; they feel like they’ve been contoured to your feet before you even ordered them. They fit us perfectly without feeling too tight across the top of the foot. In fact, they were our best overall pick as the Most Comfortable Women’s Slide for Travel of 2023 .

Contouring around the arch adds a high degree of support, and there’s no slipping on grass, cement, decking, or anywhere else. They’ve also versatile enough to become a staple shoe in your wardrobe. We’ve been wearing them with almost everything, and they come in black, white, and light brown, in sizes five to 11.

Travel + Leisure / Melissa Gray

Best Compression Socks

Levsox compression socks.

These compression socks feel like a miniature massage and are easy to get on.

Almost all of the patterns are very bright.

A long flight or even a long train or car ride will feel much better with a good pair of compression socks . Levsox feels like a mini massage in your arches and heels, without being too difficult to put on. At the end of the day, our feet felt a bit less tired after wearing these, with no swelling or aching in the arches, heels, or calves. These socks are breathable and snug but flexible, like a good pair of tights or leggings — feeling almost silky. They also held up well to washing and drying during our tests. They come in an excellent array of patterns, whether you prefer tie-dye, skeletons, or kittens. They are available in sizes small to extra large and packs that include three or six pairs.

We sorted through results from eight of our T+L tests to find the best of the best in travel pants, packable jackets, swimsuits, flats, walking shoes, hiking footwear, slides, and compression socks. While the exact testing methodologies differed depending on each product, we consistently looked for quality of material and construction, comfort, and performance. We did squats in our travel pants, carried our packable jackets around for two full days, and wore all the shoes for at least two straight hours (often longer) to find our favorites. In addition to the eight products personally tested by us, we also included some research options in this list of clothing and accessories to round out the best products for your next trip.

Tips for Buying Women's Travel Clothes and Accessories

Look for wrinkle-resistant materials.

The last thing you want to do in a hotel room is fiddle with the iron, and no one looks their freshest straight off an airplane. Avoid creating extra work for yourself and look for materials that won’t wrinkle, like wool, denim, or rayon. You can seamlessly wear them on the plane and off. Anything labeled a “knit” is also less likely to wrinkle. However, if you have the space, you can always pack a travel steamer .

Consider packability

Thicker materials will naturally take up more room in your suitcase, as will certain styles (coats are notorious space hogs). Look for lightweight clothing that folds or rolls easily and is made from flexible, softer fabrics. When packing shoes, you'll also want to look for lightweight, shorter options rather than tall, heavy boots unless absolutely necessary. If you do need to take larger or heavier items, you may want to wear them on the plane to optimize space.

Prioritize versatility

You’ve only got so much suitcase space. Rather than going for seven different outfits, why not pack simple tops and bottoms you can mix and match? Keep in mind that you should pack enough underwear for every day of travel , though women can get away with just a couple of versatile travel bras . By choosing outfits that can work between various locations (like a dress you can wear both sightseeing and out to dinner), you’ll save time by not having to go back to your hotel to change between venues. Plus, if your wardrobe is versatile, you'll get more use out of it at home, too.

There are two main schools of thought when it comes to packing styles: folding and rolling. When it comes down to it, there isn’t a huge difference between the two. Feel free to alternate — some items of clothing work best with one or the other, but you won’t know until you’ve tried it. Furthermore, compression packing cubes are a great way to maximize space and help you stay organized.

While it seems obvious, the best travel outfit will be something that you like and feel comfortable in. Generally, we prefer darker colors (because they're less likely to show stains or look dingy at the end of a long day); soft, natural fabrics like merino wool that can temperature-regulate and resist odor; and unstructured styles that won't dig into you on a long flight or in small spaces.

It depends on your suitcase, but generally, put your shoes in first. You can stash smaller items of clothing inside your shoes, like socks and underwear. Then, put your shoes in shoe bags (or consider using a hotel room shower cap) if you’re worried about damaging your shoes or getting dirt on the rest of your suitcase. From there, either line them up with the edges of your suitcase or put them in a separate dedicated compartment and build around them. There are also plenty of weekender bags and backpacks with dedicated compartments just for shoes. Meanwhile, you should pack chunkier clothing items like jackets, last in your suitcase, or you can just carry them or wear them on the plane.

In the past, I’ve been plagued by my collection of travel shirts that show sweat, and patterned blouses that I can’t (or shouldn’t) be memorably wearing in trip photos. I pray that none of my travle shirts will wrinkle. I strive to have shirts that could be worn more than once without washing.

My struggles have led me to testing and reviewing more travel shirts that lots of women swear by. In my latest trip, I tried my best to nail the travel shirt dilemma by bringing a range of shirt styles from a range of brands.

Here are a wide variety of travel shirts I’ve tried, and my opinions on them! Make sure to check out the photos of me wearing them, to see if these are fits and styles that will be easy to wear on your next trip.

Mott & Bow Slub Crew Tee & Relaxed Slub Tank

I started wearing the Mott & Bow slub tees and tanks this year and packed a few on a trip to the Catskills in Upstate NY . Because they’re pretty thin, and good for spring and summer, you can pack quite a few of these into a packing cube, and they don’t take up a lot of space at all! (I actually really enjoy folding them into little squares).

travel tops for ladies

They’re made of soft pre-washed cotton, and come in basic neutral colors that’ll match everything. I didn’t think I’d gravitate toward Military green, but I did, and it’s my favorite slub tank besides the white one that I find goes with every summer outfit.

travel tops for ladies

As for the fit, the slub tanks are nice and loose, so I wear a cami under them. The tees are much snugger and fit the form a bit more. Both styles are very affordable and can go right into your pack for your next adventure to wear with your travel pants of choice .

Mott & Bow Slub Crew Tee

See why this classic lightweight tee should be in your pack for every trip

Bluffworks Threshold Crew & V-Neck T-Shirt

The Bluffworks Threshold fabric is the important part of this basic tee for travel .

I specifically like to wear the Threshold shirt when I’m flying, because I tend to get sweaty and icky. I’ve found that the breathability and ability to dry quickly helps me feel a big fresher when I walk off the flight.

travel tops for ladies

I tend to like V-necks better sometimes, and the Threshold tees also come in flattering “V” necklines version. For me, I find it simple to dress up either of these with high-waisted shorts, some jewelry, a cardigan or cute shoes.

Bluffworks Threshold Crew T-Shirt

Add the Bluffworks Threshold tee to your favorite travel shirts to pack!

lululemon Love Curved-Hem Crewneck T-Shirt

The Lululemon Love T-Shirt fit me perfectly when I put it on. I was wondering if it would look OK with leggings (my travel pants of choice), and because of the curved hem, it provided the coverage I wanted. I’m happy to dress this one up with a high-waisted skirt, or shorts, and some flats and a necklace.

travel tops for ladies

The stretch feels awesome when I’m wearing it. What I like is that for my build, it fits in both the shoulders and the bottom hem without specifically being sized ‘petite.’ It’s not skin-tight, even though the fabric is thin, so I feel comfortable in the fit if I’m having a day when I feel a little bloated (like some days when I travel).

lululemon Love Crewneck T-Shirt

Express your personal style with the lululemon Love Crewneck T-Shirt, a classic piece for everyday wear.

Ibex Women’s Paradox Pocket Short Sleeve Tee

The Ibex Women’s Paradox Pocket Tee (formerly the brand’s “Merino Tencel Pocket Short Sleeve Tee,” as a tip) makes me feel down-to-earth and relaxed. This shirt is so soft and lightweight, which pleasantly surprised me when I wore it for the first time!

travel tops for ladies

This travel shirt is totally versatile and has a comfy and relaxed loose fit (not body-hugging) that works best for me with high-waisted shorts or pants. If you find it too cropped, I recommend layering a cami tank underneath for either warmth or modesty. My key recommendation is to grab your size and chosen color without delay, becuase it frequently goes out of stock and is a best-seller.

travel tops for ladies

Ibex Women’s Tencel Pocket Tee

A nice classic merino tee style with a pocket

Foehn Women’s Keats Merino T-Shirt

I’m newer to the Foehn brand and I like the novel European feel that all the products have. The Foehn Keats Merino T-shirt is one of the first merino wool tees I’ve owned, and from the start, I saw how easily it went with other clothes I already owned for my trip gear.

It took me a little while to get into liking the Keats Merino Tee originally, and that’s because I wasn’t sure how to style it. But after wearing it with my Free Fly high-waisted leggings, I realized BAM: this is a cool travel outfit.

travel tops for ladies

I was surprised how nicely it worked out with my Public Rec All Day pants , which you can see in these photos.

Foehn Women's Keats Merino T-Shirt

Stay cool and fresh with the Foehn Women's Keats Merino T-Shirt, combining natural thermoregulation with European style.

Bluffworks Threshold Cowl Neck Top

Much like the rest of the Bluffworks women’s apparel for travel, the Cowl Neck top is a classy and dressier travel top that I tried out. It’s made of the Threshold fabric that I know from the crew and V-neck tees.

travel tops for ladies

As a note for petite women like me, this one comes in petite sizing! I’m 5’2” and wearing a size Petite XS. Honestly, it runs a little long, but that’s ideal for tucking it into a skirt or some slacks. My favorite travel feature is the secret zipper pocket at the side for handy essentials or valuables. It’s basically a theft-proof shirt for women, and it’s about time we had one! (Also, a tip: it’s on sale quite often.)

See why this classy and stylish top is perfect for a trip.

Public Rec Essential Tee

Public Rec’s Essential Tee is like a perfect basic travel shirt that packs up small in my bag. I’ve worn mine with jeans, joggers, patterned bottoms and gym shorts.

I like how “fine” it feels, and the fit has always been perfect on me from the start, even though I have a short torso and wear petite sizes. It’s a cropped fit, but it fits me how I like my shirts to fit: hitting right before the hip. When you pick your fit, keep in mind that it’s true to size (in my experience).

travel tops for ladies

In my full review of the Essential Tee , you’ll see more photos of the fit. One more tip: Hurry up, as it’s being discontinued and you’ll only fit it in one or two sizes!

Upgrade your wardrobe with the Public Rec Essential Tee, an everyday staple for the modern man.

Mott & Bow Crew Marcy tee

Mott & Bow’s 50/50 Pima cotton-Modal tops were what I first tried as travel shirts. My Marcy tee packs up teeny tiny in my bag when I take it on a trip in a packing cube. These Marcy tees are simple basics, which is something I’m always on the hunt for, especially as a quick decision for an outfit when I’m on the road.

travel tops for ladies

The Crew Marcy tee comes in a lot of colors, which makes it hard for me to pick. I went with some basics.

Take my tip on buying yours: you can load up on a few with the bundle of 3 or 6, and save anywhere between 20-27%. If you’d like to see more of what Mott & Bow offers as a brand, I’ve reviewed a lot of the products in this guide, with photos .

Keep it simple and sophisticated with the Mott & Bow Crew Marcy tee, an everyday essential.

Seadon W’s Traveler Merino Tee

I hadn’t heard of Seadon until I tried the W’s Traveler Merino Tee , an ultra lightweight, soft and stretchy shirt, in XS. Finally: a true-to-size XS top that I can wear as a perfect fit travel shirt (although it runs a little long on my short body).

travel tops for ladies

Seadon makes women’s and men’s apparel, as well as accessories like totes, beanies and underwear (which I tried, and genuinely recommend because it’s so soft!).

What I like about Seadon so far is that they will send your products in plastic-free packaging. My Seadon apparel arrived at my house in a biodegradable envelope mailer, which can even be composted in your compost bin.

Make sure to check this out and see if it's for you!

KUHL Konstance Shirt

KUHL’s outdoorsy Konstance top is a best-seller made from a polyester and Tencel-spandex blend. When I wear it, I layer it under a zip-up hoodie or a windbreaker, and I’m be ready for hiking the trails with Dan in no time.

Even as a petite woman, I find that this shirt is only a “little” big in the shoulders, and it doesn’t run too long. Keep in mind that I’m 5’2” and about 110 lbs. It’s a spacious shirt with somewhat boxy shoulders, so maybe it’s kind of unique. The standard runs sizing, according to how this one fits me.

travel tops for ladies

Style meets comfort in the KUHL Konstance Shirt, a versatile addition to any wardrobe.

Quince 100% European Linen Short Sleeve Shirt

Coming from the brand that makes my Quince hard shell suitcase , this lightweight and loose button-down linen shirt is a fan favorite from Quince’s travel collection. As with all Quince tops and blouses, the price is unbeatable and the quality is “affordable luxury,” like everything Quince makes.

This travel shirt is what I’ll put on for a day on the streets of Lisbon , or for a dinner outdoors on the water at a resort or on a boat. It has a boxy fit and a laidback vibe, with the three buttons, wide hem and timeless collar style. The 100% European flax linen makes it heat-regulating and breathable.

This collared button-down shirt is made from flax linen and provides breathability during travel.

Public Rec Go-To Muscle Tank

Public Rec’s Go-To Muscle Tank is a pretty athletic-leaning top that I just started wearing for travel. I like the performance fabric that kept me cool on a rather hot day in summer when it was really humid. This travel tee is specifically good for layering, and I like the slimming fit and the unique sleeve design.

travel tops for ladies

Regarding the fit, it’s a bit tight around the middle. I haven’t worn it with high-waisted shorts or pants, but I’m thinking it may work best for this type of styling.

Stay cool with the Public Rec Go-To Muscle Tank, a perfect blend of comfort and modernity.

Nike Sportswear Club Essentials Women’s T-Shirt

This simple and easy “50/50” T-shirt from Nike is a shirt I wear when I’m home, as well as away from home. The 50/50 blend makes it easy to care for, so I throw it in the wash after breaking a sweat.

Regarding the fit, I wear an XS in other Nike products and those have been perfect. I find that in XS, the Club Essentials shirt is a dab wider in the shoulders. That’s because Nike has updated the fit of this item for an “updated look:” a slightly shorter body, slightly wider shoulders and a slight curve at the bottom.

travel tops for ladies

As a short disclaimer, Nike gave me this product to try, and the opinions above are completely my own.

With an updated relaxed sporty style, this tee is an easy choice for travel days.

Icebreaker Merino Granary Short Sleeve T-Shirt

The Icebreaker Merino Granary has a lounge-style aesthetic and is a TOTALLY oversized style, which I found out when I put it on. It’s a very relaxed fit that was not a good look on me (with my short torso and short build), but for taller women, it’ll be a chilled-out style for flight days. In the photos here, see how small it can fold up in muy carry-on (I’m not including photos of me wearing it because even in XS, it was too big).

travel tops for ladies

Because it’s 100% merino wool, I’ll provide you with my best tried-and-true care recommendation: don’t put it in the dryer! Hang it dry instead. If you’d like to see more Icebreaker products, check out my list of the best products for solo female travelers , as I included Icebreaker’s Siren Bra, also made of merino wool.

Paka Apparel Women’s V-Neck

I wore my Paka V-Neck travel tee for the first time on my trip to Colombia! I couldn’t wait to wear it in some of our travel photos because I love how it fits and how it feels. I like that it’s soft and durable, and I think the timeless V-neck scoop is flattering.

This special company works with artisans in the Peruvian Andes and all the products have a unique “handwoven tag.” While the V-neck is currently hanging in my closet, it’s coming on all my trips in the near future. Plus: despite the fine alpaca fabric blend, it’s machine-washable.

Everlane Pima Cotton Shirts

From the Pima Cotton collection at Everlane comes several options for your next trip, including this awesome long-sleeve bodysuit with a unique square neckline that’ll have your friends asking where you got it.

At a very affordable price point of $45, and made of Supima cotton and elastane, it’s a cool item to be wearing under high-waisted pants, loose jeans or any other type of comfortable travel pants .

As a clarifier on Supima cotton, it’s a special type of cotton grown only in the US and because of its long fibers, it absorbs moisture better than regular cotton.

For a tank-top style bodysuit, there’s the Cutaway Tank Bodysuit (note that a main difference is the cut in the backside).

Simplify your wardrobe with the Everlane Pima Cotton Shirts, designed for comfort, durability, and timeless style.

prAna Cozy Up Scoop Neck Tee

From travel brand prAna, a company featured in my guide to the best travel dresses for women , is this scoop neck tee made from hemp, recycled polyester and Tencel Lyocell.

Because of the fabric, it has natural odor-reducing abilities, and with the laid-back scooped neckline, it’s a great item to have in your pack for summer and early fall when days are still warm.

prAna designed this tee to be a closet staple, or rather, an essential item in your packing cube. As for fit, this product comes recommended for busty women who may have trouble finding styles that fit otherwise.

Stay casual and cozy with the prAna Cozy Up Scoop Neck Tee, a perfect blend of comfort and style.

The North Face Dune Sky Shirt - Women’s

The affordable The North Face Dune Sky Shirt - Women’s from one of my favorite outdoors brands, The North Face, is a plain and simple shirt for travel days or as a hiking layer. It comes in quite two bold colors, and you’ll see it’s available in an all-encompassing array of inclusive sizing from XS to XXL.

Through its recycled polyester build (with FlashDry™ materials), it’s lightweight and has anti-odor technology. This is a superb combo for when you’re out getting some activities in, and then you hit a brewery or lunch spot with travel friends right after.

Free Fly Women’s Elevate Lightweight Tee

I’m excited about the Free Fly brand , which makes apparel for life and travel on the water. The Elevate Lightweight Tee is a special type of featherweight shirt that’s super soft to the touch and made from the brand’s four-way stretch and drirelease® tech. When I put it on, it felt airy and almost like it wasn’t there!

The fabric and the style are the best parts of this shirt to discuss. The material has HeiQ® Fresh odor control, a durable TENCEL™ blend that feels light as air and a timeless crew neck with a semi-crop hem. I look forward to it keeping me cool in really hot climates and pairing it with some high-waisted bike shorts!

Pair it with the Free Fly Reverb Shorts, which you can see in my guide to the best women’s travel shorts .

This ultralightweight travel tee dries insanely fast and is also good for workouts.

Jack Wolfskin Pre Light Chill T

As the last T-shirt in this list, the Jack Wolfskin Pre Light Chill T is an activewear shirt for a sporty traveler. I tried it in size XS, and my suggestion for you when you pick sizing is to size down , as Jack Wolfskin runs big.

Jack Wolfskin is an outdoors and adventure apparel brand that I’ve come to know from products like their jackets, like in my Jack Wolfskin Down Jacket review . Just like the packability of that coat, the Pre Light Chill T packs up tiny in my packing cubes. It’s made from a technical jersey fabric that stretches and moves, with odor protection and functional features like TEXADRI sweat absorption.

This travel shirt packs up small and moves with you.

How I chose these shirts for travel

Over the years, I’ve pretty much figured out what I don’t appreciate in travel apparel and travel shirts. I can’t stand shirts that show perspiration, wrinkle after coming out of my bags, smell after getting sweaty on a bus ride and/or don’t fit in a flattering way. Based on these setbacks, I’ve decided what I do like my travel shirts to do for me.

What I’ve developed in this list is a range of shirts from those that could suit business casual events to the ones you want to wear for your next hike or trek. Some are for both! Here are a few of the things I’ve considered.

The shirts in this list come from my favorite travel brands . Some of these brands I’ve been able to try out first from their travel pants or travel dresses , and some I’ve been recommended by friends or found online. I trust these brands for making quality gear, and I hope you will too.

These shirts come in a range of prices. I’ve absolutely included shirts at every budget, from the really affordable ones in the $30-40 range, to the ones you’ll want to dish out for at the $80+ range. My budget for travel clothes has changed throughout the years, and I expect that the women reading this guide will have varying budgets for travel clothes.

From merino wool to recycled polyester to hemp, there are quite a few looks to consider for travel apparel. The same goes for travel shirts. The sportier shirts are stretchy and are made from quick-dry blends, whereas the merino wool shirts are high-quality and usually sustainably-sourced items with marks of excellence.

Technical features

I always appreciate a travel product with really impressive features. That might be the thoughtful hidden zipper pocket in the Bluffworks Cowl Neck Top, or the asymmetrical or square necklines on some shirts and bodysuits you see in my list.

The shirts in this list range from relaxed tanks to bodysuits to tunics to simple tees. Every woman has several lenses of her style, and the same goes for me. Some days I’ll like a simple crew neck top, and other days I’ll be in the mood for a top like the Public Rec Muscle tank. I am also assuming you’ll be taking a few shirts in your luggage for your trip (but if you have only one shirt for travel, I’ll be truly impressed).

I hope you’ve enjoyed this list of travel shirts and even if none of them work for you this time, I hope you’ve learned a bit about the types of shirts that are out there for the future.

Why trust me?

I’m someone who, despite years of travel, can never decide which shirts to bring on a trip. I think I’m finally in a place where I have my go-to travel shirts (from this list!) and those are the ones that will be my travel staples.

I’ve been traveling independently since my early 20s, from Asia and then to Latin America, and later, from Europe to Africa. I’ve been in all types of weather and elevation levels and I’ve been on tons of different methods of transport. For me, having a travel shirt that doesn’t make me sweaty, stinky or annoyed, is what I need!

From this list, I hope you were able to figure out some travel shirts to try and I hope they become useful for you in your next adventures.
