When it comes to Expedia prices

When it comes to expedia travel insurance, when it comes to the expedia cancellation policy, when it comes to the expedia loyalty program, when it comes to maximizing credit card points, the pros and cons of expedia recapped.

Frequent travelers likely know that there’s something better than a dream trip: a dream trip that you booked on a bargain.

The ways to save money on travel are plentiful. You can redeem hotels and airline points, or take advantage of last-minute travel deals, to name a few. And booking through third-party online travel agencies like Expedia can sometimes yield especially big savings.

Beyond just deals, Expedia has robust search filters that make finding your perfect vacation easy. It streamlines purchasing trip insurance , which can be especially important for travel these days. Plus, the Expedia Rewards program earns you points to pay for future bookings.

But booking through an OTA like Expedia is not without its drawbacks. Here's a look at some of those to help you weigh the pros and cons of booking travel through Expedia.

Video preview image

Pro: Expedia has frequent sales, last-minute travel deals and bundle discounts

Expedia deals are aplenty, whether it’s a bundling discount or a sale.

Bundling: A major component of booking travel on Expedia is the practice of bundling, where you can expect additional savings for booking more than one product (e.g., flight and hotel, or hotel and attraction ticket) in one transaction. For example, when we searched for a hotel and rental car in Miami, one five-day booking option included up to three free rental car days while another offered one free night.

A perk of booking travel through Expedia is that you select your hotel, airfare and car rental in separate steps in the process. This makes it easy to bookmark the page and compare the cost of these items on Expedia versus the cost on the company’s direct website.

Expedia payment plans: If you don’t want to pay for your whole trip at the time of booking, Expedia allows you to make smaller payments through Affirm, which is a service that offers short-term loans for online purchases. If approved by Affirm , you’ll be able to pay for your trip in monthly installments.

You can also check Expedia’s Deals page and Expedia’s Last-Minute Deals page . Both tend to offer an eclectic mix of travel deals, ranging from cheap motels in tiny towns to lavish resorts in major tourist destinations. We’ve spotted deals as high as 70% off.

» Learn more: How to find cheaper last-minute flights

Con: Booking direct is sometimes still cheaper than Expedia

Sure, Expedia sales and last-minute deals are nice, but that’s not to say that you can’t find other (sometimes better) deals for booking directly with the travel provider. Many offer their own exclusive deals — and they might save you even more than booking with online travel agencies. Compare prices across both Expedia and the specific company to ensure you’re getting the best price.

And sometimes the savings go beyond just the sticker price. For example, boutique hotel chain Ovolo Hotels offers generous amenities including free laundry, happy hour refreshments and a daily breakfast buffet — but only if you book directly with them.

Pro: You can purchase an Expedia travel insurance policy

Expedia partners with various insurance providers, depending on your individual booking, to offer trip protection.

F or flights: Expedia offers travel insurance protection options that cover flight cancellation, medical emergencies and other covered circumstances.

For hotels: Choose hotel booking protection to reimburse your stay in the case of cancellation.

For car rentals: You can add car rental damage protection for an extra per-day fee.

Coverage varies by plan, but you can typically expect reimbursement for some (or all) trip costs if your trip is impacted by covered reasons. Covered reasons typically include delays, loss, theft or damage to one’s baggage and personal belongings. You’re also typically reimbursed for covered medical expenses, including emergency evacuation if you get sick or injured during your trip.

But there are many limitations and exclusions, so read your policy’s fine print to understand what’s covered.

Expedia 24-hour cancellation

When you book a flight on Expedia, you can cancel for a full refund as long as you do so within 24 hours of booking. The U.S. Department of Transportation requires airlines to allow you to cancel a flight for a full refund if canceled within 24 hours of booking and it was booked seven days before departure.

Con: Outside travel insurance might be more comprehensive or cheaper (and sometimes free)

You can opt out of Expedia’s travel insurance and either be completely uninsured — or simply acquire your insurance elsewhere. And there are better travel insurance policies out there.

After a comprehensive review of dozens of plans that assessed factors including price and COVID-19 coverage, here are the best travel insurance policies .

What’s more, you might not even need to pay for travel insurance at all. Many credit cards offer travel insurance benefits if you paid for your trip with that card.

Pro: Expedia offers some fully refundable options

Because airlines, hotels and other travel services set their own individual policies on Expedia, change and cancellation policies can vary significantly. While it can be tricky to parse the policies for each individual property, use Expedia’s “fully refundable” search filter to limit potential bookings to those with flexible policies.

travel with expedia

For straightforward requests, use the Expedia service page to make changes and get a refund. If you’re unable to get help through Expedia’s self-service tools, other ways to get in touch with Expedia include live chat, a dedicated Twitter account ( @expediahelp ) and a phone line.

Con: Most cancellation policies are bad, confusing or both

Because airlines are required to give full refunds if you cancel within 24 hours of booking, Expedia lets you change or cancel your flight reservation without fees within the same time period.

For everything else, good luck. Because each travel provider sets its own policies, navigating them can be a headache. In some cases, canceling through Expedia means you’ll have to chase after the hotel or activity provider to recoup the costs.

Additionally, prepare for cancellation fees (both Expedia’s own fees as well as fees from the service provider). That’s if you’re able to cancel at all. Some bookings through Expedia are nonrefundable altogether.

Pro: It’s great for commitment-phobes

The new Expedia Rewards program, One Key Rewards, lets you earn OneKeyCash for every booking you make on the platform (plus on Vrbo and Hotels.com), which can then be used like cash toward future trips. Not only that, but Expedia users can earn status, which includes benefits like exclusive members-only discounts and extra benefits at VIP Access properties (such as free breakfast or late checkout).

For travelers who don’t like to commit to one airline or hotel company, don’t travel that frequently, or who book travel that otherwise doesn’t have its own loyalty program (like a tour or vacation rental), Expedia makes it possible to still get rewarded.

» Learn more: The guide to One Key Rewards

Con: Most hotel and airline loyalty programs are far more rewarding

While the One Key Rewards program is fine, most travel loyalty programs tied to specific hotels or airlines are almost always more rewarding. For individual point values, most other currencies of airline and hotel points are worth far more than OneKeyCash, which nets you 2% back on cruise, hotel, activity and rental car bookings but only .2% on flights. Once it's in your account, you can use it to pay for bookings just like you would cash — though you’ll need enough OneKeyCash in your account to pay for an entire flight, not just part of it.

Additionally, holding specific airline or hotel elite status is typically more lucrative than the value of elite status on One Key Rewards as most perks extend to Expedia VIP Access properties only. That said, some elite members can enjoy up to 20% discounts on hotels and free price drop protection on flights, which is a plus.

As for how to use Expedia points, OneKeyCash can be redeemed on “pay now” bookings for participating purchases priced in U.S. dollars. You can use it to pay for part of a hotel booking, but you’ll have to have enough to pay for the full cost of a flight (including taxes and fees). And while you can’t transfer rewards, you can use your OneKeyCash to book travel for others.

But depending what status you’re able to reach with individual brand loyalty programs, you can likely expect better perks. So if you’re fine committing to one brand, you’re almost always better off striving to earn its status versus with One Key Rewards. But if you only stay for a night here or there or prefer to book based on location or price, it’s a way to earn a few more rewards.

Pro: Expedia counts as a travel purchase

Many travel rewards credit cards give you a higher rewards rate on travel purchases, and booking sites like Expedia typically count as travel spending. For example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns 2 points per dollar on travel spending, compared with 1 point per dollar on most purchases.

Con: Travel credit cards are usually better for earning and redeeming rewards

If you’re loyal to a specific hotel or airline brand — or are open to pledging allegiance — credit cards aligned with those brands typically pay more on purchases directly from the brand partner. For example:

Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card

on American Express' website

Chase United Airlines Mileage Plus Credit Card

on Chase's website

Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card

• 2 miles per $1 spent on Delta purchases.

Terms apply.

• 2 miles per $1 spent on United purchases.

• 12 points per $1 spent on eligible Hilton purchases.

• 6 points per $1 spent at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels.

• 1 mile per $1 spent.

• 3 points per $1 spent.

• 2 points per $1 spent.

Even general-purpose travel rewards cards that aren't tied to a specific airline or hotel chain will often reward you more handsomely for booking through their own portals than they would for going through a site like Expedia. Going back to the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : As mentioned, it earns 2 points per dollar on most travel purchases — but 5 points per dollar on travel booked through the Chase portal . Among general-purpose travel cards:

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

• 5 miles per $1 on hotels and car rentals booked through Capital One Travel.

• 2 miles per $1 on other purchases.

• 5 points per $1 spent on travel booked through Chase.

• 10 points per $1 spent on hotels and rental cars booked through Chase.

• 5 points per $1 on air travel booked through Chase.

• 5 points per $1 spent on flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 spent per year.

• 5 points per $1 on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel.

• 2 miles per $1 spent.

• 1 point per $1 spent.

If you're considering booking with other online travel agencies like Priceline or Hotels.com, here are the best credit cards for online travel booking websites .

With the right deal, booking travel — including flights, hotels, cruises or car rentals — on Expedia could be worth it. It makes searching for travel relatively easy given the massive array of available listings, coupled with thoughtful search functionality to actually help you create your ideal itinerary.

But don’t automatically assume it’s a cheap way to book travel. Especially given the complicated cancellation policies, it might become among the most expensive, should an uninsured trip need to be canceled.

Planning a vacation or trip is undoubtedly stressful. You're bombarded with seemingly endless options for flights, lodging, and things to do, and it can be difficult to figure out where to start. Many travel aggregators strive to present you with the best deals, but they all end up looking very similar to each other.

These similarities make it easy to know what to do and expect when you first visit a site. Typically, you enter your destinations, dates, and number of travelers. After you click search, you can further filter based on price range, airlines, and departure times for flights; amenities, hotel stars, and location for hotels; and type of car and rental car company for cars.

So what makes one site better than another?

It all depends on your priorities and preferences. Everyone travels and plans for that travel differently. Here are seven travel sites and the factors you should consider when choosing a site.

Booking.com

travel with expedia

Booking.com is a huge bank of information, offering more than 1 million properties in 117,000 destinations in 225 countries and territories. Wherever you'd like to go, you'll find it through this site. It offers booking for flights,  hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars.  Clicking  restaurants will take you to OpenTable.

Highlights:

I found their desktop homepage to be cluttered and a lot to look at compared to the homepages of other sites, but their app experience was noticeably simpler, which makes sense as travelers increasingly turn mobile.

One feature on the homepage that stood out to me (shown above) was the "Are you traveling for work?" option. Clicking "Yes" will present popular business travel options like WiFi and breakfast.

Another feature was its flexible date suggestions if your chosen destination is a popular choice and accommodations are more than 50% reserved during your selected dates.

Best for:

  • Wide variety of options, including hostels, homestays, and bed and breakfasts
  • Easy access to your plans and searches by syncing your account across your devices
  • Getting the best deals with their Price Match offer
  • Destination travel guides and articles

Lacking or not the best for:

  • Bundling hotel, flight, and car packages

Book a trip with Booking.com

travel with expedia

If you sign up as a member, you can earn Expedia+ points to use toward future trips. Use the mobile app to earn 2x Expedia+ points.

Like Booking.com, Expedia also offers suggestions for date shifts, date extensions, and route changes to get you to the cheapest deal.

  • Hotel, flight, and car bundles
  • Coordinating your whole vacation itinerary
  • Reward points system
  • Single bookings. The site is best utilized for its bundle packaging.

While I'm partial to Yelp for food recommendations and believe it to be better for US destinations, TripAdvisor is much more widely used in the international community.

TripAdvisor is the most experience-driven travel site. You are not just booking somewhere to live — you're signing up to experience and explore a destination.

  • Detailed filtering (e.g. style for hotels and distinctive features for vacation rentals)
  • Comparing deals across aggregators
  • Strong user-generated review community
  • Bundling hotel, flight, and car packages

CheapOair offers booking for  flights, hotels, and rental cars.  Clicking on its cruises  tab takes you to another site, Cheap Cruises.

The "Travel by Interest" section offers special deals for senior , military , student , and last minute travel . The military and student discounts emphasize keeping costs low, while the senior discount focuses on senior friendly destinations at an affordable price.

Whether you're coordinating a reunion, wedding, or corporate event, a Group Travel Request is a good option. You can work with an agent on your travel needs.

  • Specific travelers like senior citizens, military, students, and large groups
  • Higher than usual service fees (e.g. $32 per night per room for hotel bookings)

Hotwire offers booking for  flights, hotels, and rental cars.

Hotwire gives you all the filters and options you need but maintains the balance of not giving you too much. It keeps its sections simple, so you don't need to worry about something you may be missing out on.

Thanks to partnerships with other travel sites like Hotels.com and Expedia, Hotwire can offer extremely low prices. There is also a free 24-hour cancellation policy on most flights.

  • Focused searchers who do not want to be distracted or overwhelmed by too many options, things to do, and city guides. Destination guides and inspiration can be found on a separate blog page.
  • Travelers on a budget
  • Travelers with very specific preferences like hotel brand or car brand

Travelocity.

Travelocity offers booking for  flights, hotels, vacation rentals, rental cars, cruises and things to do.  And no, you're not seeing double. Expedia owns Travelocity, which may explain why the two homepages look almost exactly the same.

From what we can tell, the most noticeable difference is Travelocity's Roaming Gnome, which represents the inspiration and wanderlust of traveling. The "Inspiration" section contains interesting articles like "Best Foodie Finds in Airports Around the World" and themes like "Luxury" or "Romantic." Expedia's travel blog, on the other hand, is relegated to an easy-to-miss link near the bottom of the page.

  • All the benefits of Expedia but with a more exploratory inspiration angle
  •  Single bookings. The site is best utilized for its bundle packaging.

Priceline offers booking for  flights, hotels, rental cars, and cruises.

The " Express Deals " option rewards flexible travelers with up to 60% savings on hotels. The site will give you the location and star rating, but not the name of the hotel. You can still choose the bed type for many of the options.

Another way to save is the Name Your Own Price feature where you input the location, star rating, and price bid for a hotel.

For car rentals, you can also Name Your Own Price and bid for a car. If you don't have big preferences on the car brand, you'll be able to find a car for a price less than the search listings give you. For example, I was able to get an economy car with unlimited mileage for $30 a day, while the general search yielded cars that were all at least $37 a day.

The cruise section is clear and easy to navigate. The search option is similar to searching for flights, with more dropdown selections than other sites. This feature is ideal for travelers who know exactly what they want for their cruise experience, and are not merely shopping around.

  • Travelers with low hotel and car brand loyalty who want to find a great deal
  • Having a more focused cruise search process
  • Travel inspiration or destination guides
  • Low risk takers who like to know exactly what they're getting

Inside expedia’s plan to be the world’s travel media network.

This story was originally published on Marketing Dive . To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Marketing Dive newsletter .

Expedia today (May 14) at its annual Explore partner event revealed a travel media network that builds on two decades of advertising experience. The Expedia Group Media Solutions offering combines first-party traveler intent and purchase data with on- and offsite ad tools, planning and measurement capabilities and access to an in-house creative team.

The launch of Expedia Group’s Travel Media Network comes as more players enter the booming media network space, with companies like Chase , Marriott and ride-hailing leaders Uber and Lyft joining a growing list that already includes most major retailers and grocers. U.S. retail media ad spend nearly hit $50 billion in 2023 — similar to what advertisers spent on national and local linear TV — and is expected to grow another 30% this year, per Advertiser Perceptions U.S. Advertising Market Outlook.

For Expedia, the time for a built-out media network is now: not only has the company sold advertising for decades, but it has “unparalleled” global reach and scale, encompassing 200 booking sites in more than 70 countries, along with a B2B network that includes more than 60,000 partners, according to Rob Torres, senior vice president of media and affiliate solutions.

“We've seen this happening with some retailers and other type of commerce platforms, but you haven't seen a lot of that in travel,” said Torres, who joined Expedia in 2022 after 16 years in Google's travel advertising business. “Not all of the smaller companies have that data and travel insights to bring together in a big media network like we can. We think that we're onto something here because of that opportunity.”

Journeys before journeys

Before they can make trips of their own, customers must first navigate a travel purchase journey that is increasingly complex. Travelers, on average, view 141 pages of travel content in the 45 days before booking a trip, and nearly 3 in 5 travelers don't have a specific destination in mind or have considered multiple destinations, per data shared by Expedia.

“We're trying to solve a problem for our advertisers,” said Jennifer Andre, vice president of business development for Expedia Group Media Solutions. “It's overwhelming for them to figure out how to find that traveler and how to tie it all together and make their media buying easier.”

Expedia's travel network leverages first-party intent data to target high-value travelers with onsite advertising as well as offsite ads on YouTube and connected TV, relying on a media, insight and planning team that spent over 12,000 hours in 2023 helping advertising partners to optimize their campaigns. The network is also partnered with publishers and platforms including Netflix and Disney+ that allow for extensions into newly created inventories.

“We can put together these robust campaigns for our partners that are multifaceted and actually reach that customer wherever they are throughout their travel journey,” Torres said.

For an example of what Expedia can do, the company shared the results of a co-created campaign with nonprofit travel board Visit California that ran in London's Heathrow Airport. Expedia had both the inventory, having bought out all of the billboards in Terminal 5, and the insight that Visit California should target UK travelers, resulting in an effort that gave the brand 100% share of voice in the terminal and generated 275 million total impressions.

“It wasn't [Visit California] just buying out-of-home in isolation — they were buying it as part of our travel media network with owned-and-operated channels and other components of their strategy with us,” Andre explained.

Opportunities for growth

Media networks continue to offer more and refined capabilities, around everything from content creation to measurement. With its ad offerings, data and insights and in-house creative team, Expedia wants to be a “one-stop shop” for travel advertisers.

“For our endemic partners that we're already working with, it may we may already have large strategic deals, but this just gives them an opportunity to go even deeper and potentially see us in a different way,” said Andre. “Not just 'Hey, I want to spend money on Expedia, how many bookings can you drive?' — we actually have the opportunity to create awareness and get them in front of travelers throughout the wider ecosystem.”

Expedia executives also highlighted a lesser known offering about a B2B network that extends its capabilities to more than 60,000 partners. The B2B network is expected to be a "growth vehicle" for both the network and Expedia overall, Torres noted.

“Many of those partners where we are serving up hotel supply, we're also serving up our sponsored listings for hotels, so there's a way for our partners to extend their presence,” Andre added. “We don't think those people realize how big we are in that space and how Expedia is showing up and powering other players in the space.”

The company's refreshed presence in the media network space also comes as industry leaders pave the way for determining what such offerings can mean for all advertisers. Walmart Connect and Home Depot's recently rebranded Orange Apron Media network are both making overtures to non-endemic brands outside of their respective retail and home improvement categories, a path that could be a "huge opportunity" for Expedia, Andre said.

“We do work with some non-endemics now, but we think that this is going to open up the opportunity as we look at offering this audience off-site and working with some of our brand partnerships,” Torres added. “It could be a big, big deal.”

Retail Media Advertising

Expedia launches travel media network, expanding ad business to include offsite buys, for buyers, conversion-based measurement is key.

Advertisers can now target Expedia audiences across the open web.

The capability comes with the launch of Expedia’s travel media network, building on the travel company’s 20-year-old advertising business. According to the company’s most recent earnings report, advertising and media through Expedia Group Media Solutions accounted for $145 million in revenue in the first quarter, up from $99 million in Q1 of 2023.

“We can appeal to—especially with audience extension—anybody that’s going after that travel audience. It could be automotive or financial services or retailers,” Jennifer Andre, vp of business development at Expedia Group Media Solutions, told ADWEEK. “This gives us a lot more opportunity to proactively speak to those advertisers and connect them to travelers in the right places.”

Taking a page out of the retail media playbook, Expedia announced the new travel media network, an evolution of its ad and media business to include offsite targeting and expand its appeal to non-endemic advertisers , today at its annual Explore 24 partner event in Las Vegas.

Expedia’s travel media network is one of the dozens of companies—inside and outside of traditional retail —using first-party data to expand offsite advertising capabilities for brands in recent years, especially as the deprecation of Google’s third-party cookie looms.

Going offsite

While the high-income audiences that Expedia attracts are enticing, the quality of the network’s measurement tools could make or break the opportunity for some brands, media buyers told ADWEEK.

“Expedia offers a highly qualified audience opportunity,” said Dan Maguire, director of retail media at agency GALE. “It will be interesting to see how many sectors can make use of this audience especially as they start leaving the hospitality realm and cross over into more conversion-dependent brands in verticals like grocery or beauty.”

The company gathers data from over 200 points of sale in 70 different countries, explained Rob Torres, svp of media and affiliate solutions. While sponsored listings and display offerings have long been available in Expedia’s ad business, advertisers will now be able to target Expedia audiences on connected TV, video and social, he said, with measurement all in one place.

Hotels and other properties that buy sponsored listing ads on Expedia get 120% more bookings and 50% higher conversion than non-enrolled properties, the company said.

Finding competitive advantage

The challenge for advertisers, as with retail media networks, is how to leverage Expedia’s data relative to competitors that have access to the same pool of audience data.

“How do competing hotel portfolio brands benefit if they’re both leveraging the data from a competitive conquesting perspective?” asked Dave Kersey, chief media officer at Austin-based Omnicom agency GSD&M.

The travel media network also includes Expedia’s in-house creative team and media buying platform. In the past, the company has worked with Visit California, the state’s destination marketing nonprofit, to place co-branded ads at London’s Heathrow airport—inventory that was exclusively available through Expedia. The campaign generated 275 million impressions, according to the company.

Another example from the in-house creative team features a short film about Scotland, hosted by actor Ewan McGregor and as part of the company’s Local Lens series, and was viewed 8.7 million times on YouTube, the company said, and social posts received click-through rates that were 10 times higher than average. The company wouldn’t share how this impacted revenue.

Expanding audience targeting offsite lets brands meet consumers in all the different places they end up while booking travel—something that’s become “a pretty manic process,” Andre said. While they might start with a site like Expedia, they’re also “going to search and social and then they’re coming back to online travel agencies,” she explained. “We want to be able to capture them where they show up.”

Expedia starts testing AI-powered features for search and travel planning

Expedia bot

In an effort to get ahead of its competitors in the travel ecosystem, online travel agency Expedia said it will soon launch an AI assistant to bolster features like search, itinerary building, trip planning and real-time updates like flight delays.

The company, which runs a variety of online travel aggregators and metasearch engines, is debuting a bot named Romie that’s been trained on a mix of in-house and OpenAI models. The bot can help users search for hotels, build itineraries for their trips and make small changes. The bot can be included in iMessage chat groups, or you can talk to it one-on-one on WhatsApp. For these apps, the bot sits behind a phone number and leverages ChatGPT.

You can chat with Romie by mentioning the bot on iMessage and ask it to summarize an itinerary it has built or suggest restaurants. The bot can take you directly to the Expedia app with links to an itinerary or suggestions.

Expedia is also introducing smart search on its site, which lets users describe what kind of hotels they want instead of selecting filters. For instance, you can type “Rooftop and view of the sea” while searching for hotels, and the search will return the best hotels with those features.

The company is testing all these features with a limited audience through its EG Labs program, which allows U.S.-based users to try the new features.

Expedia said it pulls in data from various sources like AccuWeather and Yelp to tailor the search and the bot. The company said this allows it to update travelers on flight changes or changes in weather. It can also suggest, for example, hotels near the airport in case of a canceled flight.

Expedia started experimenting with AI last year when it introduced an in-app travel planning experience that used ChatGPT . It seems the company is now working on integrating AI into its core feature set.

Expedia’s rivals have also made some moves. Booking.com introduced AI-powered trip planning features in June 2023, and Airbnb has tested AI-aided review summaries and is aiming to build what it calls the “ultimate concierge.” In March, Kayak launched a new conversational tool and a screenshot-based price comparison feature.

Startups are also banking on AI-powered features to take on incumbent travel platforms. Costanoa Ventures-backed Mindtrip is building an AI travel agent for users , while Vancouver-based Pilot is using AI to make travel planning more social .

Layla, which counts firstminute capital, M13, Booking.com’s co-founder Andy Phillipps, Skyscanner co-founder Barry Smith and Paris Hilton as investors, is building an end-to-end travel recommendation app with the help of existing data and creator content. The company also acquired FLYR.com and Jason Calacanis-backed AI itinerary builder Roam Around earlier this year .

Rathi Murthy, CTO of Expedia Group, told TechCrunch over a call that despite a ton of competition in the space, the company is confident that its solution will stand out because it plays multiple roles.

“While everybody talks about AI assistants, for me, having an AI assistant that is a travel agent, personal assistant, concierge, and always there at the ready for you to make changes, remedy your trip, and remove fit across the entire process proactively is a game changer. […] We have been able to take the Expedia experience outside of our ecosystem and into channels like iMessage or WhatsApp and take advantage of that, which I think is unique,” he said.

Murthy said that the only reason Romie can’t be used in WhatsApp group chats yet is they have not yet figured out the dynamics of how the bot would work in that setting rather than any technical challenges.

Expedia also said it would launch a cross-date price comparison tool, an AI-powered help page, and guest review summaries as part of its spring update.

Expedia’s Romie wants to be your AI travel agent

travel with expedia

If you buy through a BGR link, we may earn an affiliate commission, helping support our expert product labs.

Rabbit unveiled the r1 AI gadget in early January, promising a device that can interact with apps instead of just answering questions and generating content. At the time, I already felt like that was functionality coming down the road to all smartphones. Once Rabbit launched the r1 , it became clear the device was essentially an Android smartphone running a single “r1” app.

Romie is one of many AI offerings that will help kill the Rabbit r1. As a reminder, one of the features Rabbit demoed in January was booking trips by voice. Then again, I’ll also say that Romie sounds like little more than a custom GPT, albeit one that has a very particular set of skills.

Considering the demos Expedia showed off for Romie, it looks like you’ll be able to integrate the AI travel assistant into your group chats, including end-to-end encrypted iMessage conversations. Apparently, all you need to do is add its phone number to a group chat.

Talking to Romie in an iMessage group chat.

The chatbot will also let you personalize Expedia searches. You can add filters like early check-in or rooftop views to find hotels that match your needs. And Romie will apparently remember your preferences across searches.

Romie offers suggestions for local attractions that match your interests.

Interestingly, Romie will also monitor things like the weather at your destination. It will advise if the weather might disrupt your plans and help with cancelations if need be. It’ll also provide alternatives to your initial itinerary so you can still make the most of your vacation.

As I said before, the whole Romie experience sounds like a custom GPT model focused on working with Expedia properties. But it’s smarter than a custom GPT, as it can place orders for you and cancel reservations. That means Romie can access your payment information when needed. Furthermore, the ability to work with iMessage and email is interesting but not clearly explained.

Also, Expedia doesn’t say what happens with the user data that Romie can access. Furthermore, it’s unclear whether chats with Romie will help train the chatbot. But the AI assistant will be able to save your preferences.

You can add Romie to any group chat on iPhone to handle travel matters.

More AI experiences on Expedia

Expedia has other genAI travel experiences ready for travelers in addition to Romie. Travelers can access customized itineraries based on AI recommendations. Expedia and Hotels.com will also support self-service booking management to help with changes, cancelations, and air credit redemption.

Expedia’s AI products will also support price comparisons for hotels and flights across dates on Expedia and Hotels.com in the US. A destination comparison feature will also be coming to Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo customers globally, letting them discover and compare new destinations.

While Romie is available in beta right away, the other AI features Expedia announced will roll out over the summer.
