The Teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Hadith on Travel: The Prophet’s supplication for a journey

Ibn Umar reported: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would mount his camel for travel, he would exalt Allah three times and then say, “ Glory be to Him who has made this subservient to us, for we have no power over it ourselves, and to our Lord we shall return. (43:14) O Allah, we ask You during this journey for righteousness, fear of Your, and deeds that are pleasing to You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and make the distance short for us. O Allah, You are our companion during the journey and the guardian of the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, ugly scenes, and an evil return to our property and family. ” When the Prophet returned, he would say these words and add to them, “ We are those who return, those who repent, those who worship and who praise our Lord .”

Travelling Duas in Islam

Duas for travelling

In Islam, We have been taught by the Quran and Hadith to start every activity with a specific dua .

It’s talking to Allah through a dua or prayer, is like having a heart-to-heart with a friend who always guides and helps. It’s like starting a task with a secret weapon that ensures smooth success.

Each dua is not just a call for help but also a way of worshipping Allah and we get its benefit on the Day of Judgment (roz-e-Qiamat). So, a dua is beneficial for Muslims in their life on this planet and for life after death.

In Islam, there are specific duas or prayers, suggested for nearly every action we take, including unique prayers for travelling safely . These special prayers, known as travelling duas , are like our companions on every journey. How to Recite Traveling Dua?

Performing a Dua, or prayer, in Islam doesn’t need any special preparations like wudu (ablution), usually done before prayers. However, as a Muslim, it is better to always remain neat and clean, including when you’re travelling.

Starting your journey? It’s an ideal time to offer your Dua for travelling .  There is a set pattern for offering a Dua in Islam. It includes:

  • Start with the name of Allah (S.W.T.)
  • Recite the specific dua for that particular need
  • End with durud (sending peace and blessings upon Prophet Muhammad  ﷺ)

Remember, you can always recite the travelling dua straightaway if you prefer. This isn’t a strict rule, just a way to make your journey more blessed.

Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and praise, and He is over all things omnipotent. We return, repent, worship and praise our Lord. Allah fulfilled His promise, aided His Servant, and single-handedly defeated the allies.

Dua for traveling

A Dua for Safe Travels

Dua, or supplication, is an integral aspect of the Islamic faith. It is a means of communicating with Allah, seeking His guidance, and asking for His blessings. When it comes to traveling, making dua is highly recommended as it is a way to seek Allah’s protection and guidance during the journey. In this article, we will explore the importance of dua for travel from a Sunnah perspective, and provide a dua for travel along with its Arabic text, transliteration, and translation.

In Islam, dua is considered to be the essence of worship. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the significance of making dua in various aspects of life, including travel. He is reported to have said, “There are three whose supplication is not rejected: the fasting person when he breaks his fast, the just ruler, and the one who is oppressed” (Tirmidhi). This indicates the special status of dua, and its potency in seeking Allah’s favor.

Traveling, whether for leisure or for a specific purpose, can be fraught with uncertainties and challenges. Making dua before embarking on a journey is a way to seek Allah’s protection and guidance, and to ensure a safe and smooth travel experience. It is a way of acknowledging our reliance on Allah and humbly seeking His assistance. Moreover, the act of making dua fosters a sense of mindfulness and connection with Allah, thereby enhancing our spiritual journey.

A dua for travel is as follows:

Arabic: سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ Transliteration: Subhana-alladhi sakh-khara la-na hadha wa ma kunna la-hu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbi-na la munqalibun. Translation: “Glory unto Him Who created this transportation, for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord we shall return.”

This dua is to be recited during the journey, whether it be by air, land, sea, or any other means of transport. It is a way of acknowledging Allah’s control over the means of transportation and seeking His protection and guidance throughout the travel.

The act of reciting this dua not only serves as a way to seek Allah’s protection and guidance but also as a means of expressing gratitude for the means of travel and acknowledging Allah’s control over all aspects of our lives.

In Islam, charity holds immense significance, and it is regarded as a means of seeking Allah’s favor and blessings. The act of giving charity with sincere intentions can serve as a way to seek Allah’s favors, and it can potentially help in the fulfillment of one’s dua. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity” (Tirmidhi).

By giving in charity with a sincere heart, one not only fulfills their obligation towards those in need but also seeks Allah’s mercy and blessings. This act of kindness and generosity can contribute to the fulfillment of one’s supplications, including those made for safe traveling and a smooth journey.

The dua for travel provided above serves as a means to acknowledge Allah’s control over our journeys and seek His blessings for a safe and smooth travel experience. Additionally, giving in charity with a sincere heart can further aid in the fulfillment of one’s supplications.

As Muslims, it is important to incorporate these practices into our lives and recognize the power of dua and charity in seeking Allah’s favor and blessings. May Allah grant us safe travels and accept our supplications. Ameen.

Let us explore some of the most beneficial as we must recite before and during the journey.

What Does the Holy Quran Say about Travelling?

Holy Quran, the sacred scripture, is the book of wisdom that teaches man the purpose of life and guides Muslims on the right way to lead their lives. The Islamic Holy Book covers all aspects of life and directs Muslims to success in this world and hereafter. According to the Quran, this world is temporary, and human beings are in a constant state of Travel. However, Allah (SWT) also mentions physical travelling several times.

In the Quran, ‘sayyir’ refers to the one who travels. The word sayir literally means to move or travel. Allah (SWT) used this word 27 times in the Quran in several expressions, including “Do Travel,” “Do they not Travel,” and “Tell them to Travel.”

Do they then not travel through the Earth, so that their minds gain wisdom and their ears thus learn to hear? 22:46

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) also emphasized travelling. He told the believers that travelling is a great way to expand their horizons and seek knowledge. In one instance, he said

“Keep  to  travelling by night  because the earth is folded (traversed more easily) during the  night .” [Abu Dawud].

Dua Before Travelling

Shariah recommends to off 2 rakaat nawafil before starting travel. It is because the Holy Prophet (PBUH) performed this task before going on any journey. You can get the confirmation of this practice from the following hadith.

Dua Before Travelling

“When you leave your house, perform two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evil. When you enter your home, perform another two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evil.”

(Musnad Al-Bazzar)

After returning home, it’s Sunnah to pray two raka’h Salah.

“When you leave your house, perform two raka’h and this will safeguard you against evil. When you enter your home, perform another two raka’h and this will safeguard you against evil.” [Musnad Al-Bazzar]

Travelling is a necessary part of life. As Muslims, we should follow the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ during Safar. You may be confused to see lots of dua in the list. Actually, Allah’s Messenger ﷺ used to say different dua during travelling. But you can start with some basic ones. And try to memorize and practice more duas as much as you can. May Allah makes our journeys safer, Ameen.

Dua For Travelling in English | Best Duas Before & After Travelling

Are you all set for your traveling be sure to recite these duas for traveling which are collected from the books of hadith..

by Mohammed Saadullah Khan

Allah SWT is the creator and sustainer of the entire universe. Every person living on this earth works day and night to fulfill his household needs and earns a living to feed himself and his family with great effort. If he does all these things under the commandments of God and the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH), then they all become acts of worship.

But if he does not follow the Islamic rules in these matters and breaks those by adopting illegal methods or starts killing the rights of others in the name of economic struggle, then this effort can become a source of disgrace for him in the hereafter. Islam has guided us in every matter and even Prophet (peace be upon Him) taught us the dua and manners for travelling also.

Why Do We Need to Read Dua for Travelling?

When we travel, we are surrounded by countless dangers. To be safe from these dangers, we can remove the possible dangers by following the commands of the Prophet (peace be upon Him) and the rulings stated by them. It is clear that by doing prayers, giving charity, and many other such things, and by following the rules and precautions, we can keep ourselves safe from every kind of danger. We should not forget to read dua for travelling before leaving our home and after coming back home.

Best Dua for Travelling in English

English transliteration : Subhan Alladhi Sakh-Khara Lana Hadha Wa Ma Kunna Lahu Muqrinin. Wa Inna Ila Rabbina Lamunqalibun

” title="Advertise and Market to Muslims" target="_blank">Ads by Muslim Ad Network

“So, that you may sit firmly on their backs, and remember your Lord’s blessings once you are settled on them, saying, “Glory be to the One who has subjected these for us, for we could have never done so ˹on our own. And surely to our Lord, we will all return.”

– [ Surah Zukhruf ayat 13-14 ]

That is, among all the creatures of the earth, only man has been given the authority by Allah SWT to use boats and ships and animals as rides. Should he never wonder who it is that made it possible for him to navigate the great seas and who created some of the innumerable animals that became his slaves? Taking advantage of these blessings and forgetting the benefactor is a sign of a dead heart and a numb conscience.

Because when a person with a lively heart and a sensitive conscience sits on these paths, he will be filled with a sense of blessings and a spirit of gratitude and will cry: ‘Blessed is He who subjugated these things to me. He is purer than that another partakes of His being, attributes, and powers. He is pure and free from the weakness of being helpless to perform his divine functions by himself and dependent on other co-gods. He is pure that I should share these blessings with someone else.

Dua’s for Travelling From Hadith:

1. It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mounted his camel to set out on a journey, he would say takbeer three times, then he would say:

Subhanaalladhi sakh-khara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen wa inna ila rabbina la munqaliboon

English Translation : Glory be to the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny.

– [ Sahih Muslim 1342 ]

Dua For Traveling in English

2. There’s a popular Dua for travelling from [ Sunan Abi Dawud 5095 ] (graded as Sahih by Al-Albani) which we must read after leaving the house. I personally recite this Dua every single time before I start my journey.

English transliteration :

Bismillahi tawakkaltu ‘alallah la hawla wala quwwata illa billah

English translation : In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah; there is no might and no power but in Allah.

Narrated Anas ibn Malik:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: When a man goes out of his house and says: “In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah; there is no might and no power but in Allah,” the following will be said to him at that time: “You are guided, defended and protected.” The devils will go far from him and another devil will say: How can you deal with a man who has been guided, defended and protected?

You can also check the meaning of this Dua here .

Remembering Allah SWT at all times brings a person even closer to Him. Moreover, it only takes only a few seconds to recite this beautiful Dua that our Prophet (SAWS) taught us to read for traveling. When you recite the Dua, be sure to put all your trust in Him.

How to Start And End Your Travel With Dua?

Narrated Ali ibn Abu Talib: Ali ibn Rabiah said: I was present with Ali while a beast was brought to him to ride. When he put his foot in the stirrup, he said: “In the name of Allah”. Then when he sat on its back, he said: “Praise be to Allah”. He then said: “Glory be to Him Who has made this subservient to us, for we had not the strength, and to our Lord do we return”. He then said: “Praise be to Allah (thrice); Allah is Most Great (thrice): glory be to Thee, I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for only Thou forgivest sins.” He then laughed. He was asked: At what did you laugh? He replied: I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) do as I have done, and laugh after that. I asked: Messenger of Allah, at what are you laughing? He replied: Your Lord, Most High, is pleased with His servant when he says: “Forgive me my sins.” He knows that no one forgives sins except Him.

– [ Abu Dawood:2602 , Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)]

O Allah, Thou art (our) companion during the journey, and guardian of (our) family. Dua When You Return From Traveling

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

English transliteration : A`ūdhu bikalimāti ‘llāhit-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq.

Dua of Protection

We may not know who has stayed before or what events have occurred in our staying place before that may affect our stay. To read the above supplication is actually useful to protect ourselves from any harm. Likewise, this dua after reaching the destination is the protection from all evil and bad things.

Traveling gives an excitement to the soul of man and gives joy to his heart. And in the Holy Qur’an, God Almighty has called consideration of the living conditions of the past people as an example and a reason to learn a good lesson from them. The prophet (peace be upon him) has given great consideration to this important movement of human life and has given special importance to traveling. It was the blessed habit of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he used to read dua for travelling when he starts his traveling and end his traveling with dua.

Arabic Dua for Travelling With English Translation

A Muslim can turn his travelling into worship by reciting the dua of journey and following some very easy Sunnah of travelling. The dua for travelling can be easily memorized when you recite it on a regular basis. We should also encourage our children to memorize these dua and remind them to recite them when they set out on a journey. Insha-Allah, the journey that starts with the remembrance of Allah will be blessed and safe.

Dua for Travelling

Prophet Muhammad (saw) used to say Bismillah when he would mount on an animal for travelling. He then recited the following verse of the Quran:

Transliteration: Subhana-alladhi sakh-khara la-na hadha wa ma kunna la-hu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbi-na la munqalibun.

Meaning: Glory unto Him Who created this transportation, for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord we shall return. Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14

Thereafter, he recited Alhamdulillah (all praises be to Allah) 3 times and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) 3 times. He then recited the following dua:

After reciting the above dua, he used to look at the sky and smile. When his companion asked him why he smiles after reciting this dua, he informed them that Allah becomes happy with the person who recites this dua so the prophet smiled to express his happiness as well. (Mishkaat)

It is advisable to say takbeer (Allahu Akbar) when going upward during a journey and saying SubhanAllah when descending. Al-Bukhari narrated in his Saheeh that Jabir ibn ‘Abd-Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When we went up we would say takbeer (Allahu Akbar) and when we went down we would say tasbeeh (Subhan Allah).

Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.)’s blessed habit was to return from a journey during chasth time (before noon) within the city. He would first go to the Masjid, perform two rakaats Salaats. Thereafter he would stay in the Masjid for a little while and then go home. (Bukhari, Muslim)

Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.) loved to journey on Thursdays. (Bukhari)

When the prophet would return back from a journey, he recited the following dua:

Transliteration: Ayiboona taiboona ‘abidoona li rabbina hamidoon.

Meaning: “Returning, repenting, worshipping and praising our Lord).” (Sahih Muslim)

What Does Allah Say About Travelling?

travelling dua hadith

The Holy Quran is the religious book of Islam and is considered the ultimate guide for Muslims. In the Holy Quran, Allah (SWT) describes our life as a journey, with ignorance and knowledge being analogous to the dark and light on the way, respectively.  The Quran has numerous references for Muslims to follow in order to go through a better worldly yet spiritual journey. However, in several places, Allah (SWT) has placed special emphasis on the significance of physical travel.

In the Quran, the word “saiyr” is used to refer to a traveller. The literal meaning of saiyr is to travel or move; for example; the planets are called sayyarah. The term saiyr appears in the Holy Quran 27 times. In most places, it’s used in the formulation of “Tell them to travel,” “Do they not travel,” or “Do travel.”

On the significance of travelling in Islam, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Three supplications will not be rejected (by Allah (SWT)), the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the One who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler. (al-Bayhaqi, at-Tirmidhi – Sahih)

Duas for Travelling in a Car

To protect yourself and your travel companions it is recommended by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to recite the following Surah, with a wish to have a safe and blessed journey:

“With the Name of Allah. Praise is to Allah. Glory is to Him Who has provided this for us though we could never have had it by our efforts. Surely, unto our Lord, we are returning. Praise is to Allah . Praise is to Allah. Praise is to Allah. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Glory is to You. O Allah, I have wronged my own soul. Forgive me, for surely none forgives sins but You.” (Abu Dawud 3/34, At-Tirmidhi 5/501)

In general, having been often mentioned in the Quran, travelling  is a way to achieve insight and wisdom by broadening an individual’s horizons and potential

Duas for Travelling on Plane

Travelling is viewed as a good deed in Islam. this is mainly because in Islam, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his Ummah succeeded in spreading Islam through exploration and travelling. The act of travelling also strengthens our belief, aboutwhich Allah (SWT) says in the Quran: “Say (O Muhammad): ‘ Travel through the earth and see how Allah did originate creation.'” (Surah Al-Ankabut, Verse 20)

Therefore, following the Sunnah – acts of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) – it is advised that every Muslim should follow the exemplary Adab (etiquette) mentioned below, while travelling out of the city or country:

  • Dua When You Leave the House | Praying 2 Raka’at of Sunnah

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), on the adab of leaving your house for travelling , stated: “When you leave your house, perform two raka’at, and this will safeguard you against evils. When you return home, perform another two raka’at, and this will safeguard you against evils.” (Hadith reported by Al-Bazzar and al-Bayhaqi)

Furthermore, in “Al-Majmu,” Imam An-Nawawi mentions that while performing the two raka’at , in the first raka’at, one should recite Surah Al-Kafirun after Surah Al-Fatiahah. However, in the second raka’at, one should recite Surah Ikhlas after Surah Al-Fatihah.

  • When You Commence Your Journey

For the following verse, Anas bin Malik (RA) narrates that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that: “Whoever says upon leaving his house (recites the below-mentioned verses) it will be said to him: ‘You are guided, defended and protected.’ The devil will go far away from him.”

“Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah”

“I begin with the Name of Allah; I trust in Allah; there is no altering of conditions but by the Power of Allah.”

( Hadith reported by Abu Daud, At-Tirmidhi, and An-Nasa’i)

  • Dua Upon Boarding the Plane

When one enters or boards the plane, it is advised by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to recite the following verses to have a blessed and safe journey:

“Bismillah, Walhamdulillah. Subhanal-ladzi sakh-khara lana hadza wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbina lamun-qalibun.”

“In the name of Allah and all praise is for Allah. How perfect He is, the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service, and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny.”

(Hadith reported by Abu Daud and At-Tirmidhi)

  • Dua When You Arrive at Your Destination | Enter a New Country or City

According to the narration of Suhaib (RA), Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would recite the following verse when he looked at the town that he wished to enter:

“Allahumma rabbas samawatis sab’i wa ma azlalna, wa rabbal ardinas sab’i wa ma aqlalna, wa rabbash-shayatini wa ma adlalna, wa rabbar riyahi wa ma zaraina, as’aluka khaira hadzihil qaryah wa khaira ahliha, wa khaira ma fiha, wa a’udzubika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha, wa sharri ma fiha.”

“O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all that they envelop, Lord of the seven earths and all that they carry, Lord of the devils and all whom they misguide, Lord of the winds and all whom they whisk away. I ask You for the goodness of this village, the goodness of its inhabitants, and for all the goodness found within it, and I take refuge with You from the evil of this village, the evil of its inhabitants, and from all the evil found within it.”

(Hadith reported by An-Nasa’i and Al-Hakim)

  • Dua Upon Entering the Place to Stay (Hotel)

When entering a hotel, people are usually unknown to the history of their place of stay. Therefore, to safeguard themselves from all possible hazards and accidents, it is recommended by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to recite the following verses:

“A’udzu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq”

“I seek refuge in Allah’s perfect words from every evil (that has been created).”

(Hadith reported by Muslim)

Khawalah binte Hakim As-Sulaimiyyah (RA) narrates for the aforementioned verses that she heard Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) saying, “Whoever, on arrival, says (verse mentioned above) no evil shall befall him until he departs from where he arrived.”

  • Dua When Facing Difficulties

There will be several times when travelling when one might feel lost. In such a case, it is advised to perform zikr (remembrance) of Allah (SWT) and istighfar (for forgiveness) for our sins.

In a narration by Abdullah bin Abbas (RA), it is stated that, “Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that if a person constantly makes Istighfar (i.e., “Astaghfirullah”), then Allah removes every difficulty, frees him from every sorrow and makes a means for him to receive sustenance from places that he never thought of.” (Hadith reported by Ahmad)

  • Dua Upon Returning Home | Praying 2 Raka’at of Sunnah

As it is advised to pray two raka’at when leaving for a journey, it is also recommended to pray two raka’at when returning home.  Jabir (RA), in a narration, says that: “I was travelling with the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) When we reached Madinah, He Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said to me, “Enter the mosque and pray two raka’at.”

Also, it is recommended to perform the prayer in the same way as the two raka’at prayers before leaving the house.

  • Dua Upon Entering Home

When returning home, it is advised to recite the following verses to show gratitude and thank Allah (SWT) for the amazing opportunity He blessed you with.

“Ayibun, ta’ibun, ‘abidun, sajidun, lirabbina hamidun”

“We return, repentant, worshipping, prostrating, and praising our Lord.”

With the aforementioned prayer, one requests Allah (SWT) to increase their provisions and wealth in abundance and grant them the opportunity to witness the magnificent wonder of Allah (SWT) in the future as well.

Dua for Protection

“bismillahi, aamantu billahi, wa tawakkaltu allallahi, ma-sha-allah, la haula wala quawwata illa billah. allahumma ahadhni wahfadh ma ma`ee wa ballighnee wa balligh ma ma ma`ee bi blalaghikalhusn, billahi astaftihu wa billahi astanjihu wa bi muhammadin sallallahu alaiyhi wa aalihi atawajjahu. allahukka sahhil lee kulla huzoonatin wa dhallil lee kulla huzoonatin wa dhallil lee kulla su`oobatin wa a`tinee mina khairi kullih akhtar mimma arju wasirf annee minash-sharri mimma uhad-diru fee aafi;yatin, ya arhamarrahimeen.”

“In the name of Allah! I have placed faith in Allah, and I have put full trust in Allah.  (It is) as Allah wills! There is no strength and no power save with Allah”. “O, Allah! Protect me and protect what is with me (my possessions), and deliver me (to my destination and delivery what is with me the best of your delivery.  By Allah, I commence (my journey), and by Allah, I seek to accomplish (the purpose of my journey) and by Muhammad (s.a.w.) I have set out (towards my destination). ‘O’ Allah make me overcome all (my grief); make easy for me all difficulties, and give me more of goodness than I hope for; keep away all evil of which I am apprehensive for my health.”  “O the most Merciful.”

Whether travelling within the city or to the outskirts, it is recommended to recite the aforementioned dua for a safe journey. While reciting this dua, a Muslim seeks the protection of Allah (SWT) and prays for the success of their journey.

Duas for Our Parents

muslim man praying during the last 10 nights of ramadan

There is no love more pure and selfless except for the love of your parents. Everyone’s parents love them unconditionally, and regardless of all and worldly reasons. And realistically stating it is nearly impossible for a child to reciprocate that love. Therefore, being Muslims, the best thing that you can do is recite the following duas wishing a happy and blessed life for your parents:

  • Dua for the Happiness of Your Parents:

“RabbiawziAAnee an ashkura niAAmataka allatee anAAamta AAalayya waAAalawalidayya waan aAAmala salihan tardahuwaaslih lee fee thurriyyatee innee tubtuilayka wa-innee mina almuslimeen”

“My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work the righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.” ( Quran 46:15)

  • Dua for the Long Life of Your Parents:

“Adhhib al-ba’s Rabb an-naas, wa’shfi anta al-Shaafi, laa shifaa’a illa shifaa’uka shifaa’an laa yughaadir saqaman”

Take away the pain, O Lord of mankind, and grant healing, for You are the Healer, and there is no healing but Your healing that leaves no trace of sickness.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5351, Muslim, 2191)

Dua for Travelling: Strengthening Faith and Seeking Allah’s Protection on Your Journey

As believers and followers of Islam, it is important to always be mindful of seeking Allah’s guidance and blessings in every aspect of our lives. Traveling, whether short distances or long, provides an opportunity to invoke Allah’s protection and guidance on our journey. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught the Ummah various duas (supplications) for different occasions, including the dua for traveling. In this blog post, we will explore the significance of the traveler’s dua and the incredible spiritual benefits that come from reciting it.

Table of Contents

Before embarking on any journey, it is essential to recite the dua for traveling. This dua is known as the Dua of Safar (دعاء السفر), and it is a beautiful way to seek Allah’s protection, guidance, and blessings on your journey

Let’s delve into the words from the dua:

لله أكبر الله أكبر الله أكبر،

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَـذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ.

Transliteration: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Subhana alladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin wa inna ila rabbina lamunqaliboon.

Translation: Glory to Him who has subjected these to our (use), for we could never have accomplished this (by ourselves), and to our Lord, surely, we are to return.

Transliteration: “Allahumma innā nas’aluka fee safarinā hādha al-birra wa-t-taqwā, wa minal-‘amali ma tardi, Allahumma hawwin ‘alayna safarana hādha watwi ‘annā bu’dah, Allahumma anata as-sahibu fis-safari, wal-khalifatu fil-ahl, Allahumma innā na’ūdhu bika min wa’tha’is-safari, wa kabatil-mandhari, wasu’il-munqalabi fil-māli wal-ahl”

Translation: “Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, O Allah, we ask You for righteousness and piety in this journey of ours, and we ask You for deeds which please You. O Allah, facilitate our journey and let us cover its distance quickly. O Allah, You are the Companion in the journey and the Successor over the family. O Allah, I take refuge with You from the difficulties of travel, from having a change of hearts and being in a bad predicament, and from an ill-fated outcome with wealth and family.”

This dua is both a humble plea and a powerful assertion of Allah’s supremacy. We seek tranquillity and ease in our journey, request His guidance in undertaking actions that earn His pleasure, and implore His protection from hardships, changes of heart, and unfortunate incidents involving our wealth and family.

From Surah Hud Ayah 41:

وقال اركبوا فيها بسم الله مجراها ومرساها إن ربي لغفور رحيم

Transliteration: Waqala irkaboo feeha bismillahi majraha wamursaha inna rabbee laghafoorun raheem[1%5E]

Translation: And he said, “Embark therein, in the name of Allah is its course and its anchorage. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful[1].

This Ayah is from the moment when the Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) was about to embark on the journey in the ark with those who believed in Allah s.w.t. The statement declared by Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) captures the spirit of complete trust and reliance in Allah s.w.t. He attributes the voyage’s movement and rest to Allah’s name, an expression of strong faith and surrender to divine decree.

Dua for Travelling 3

In the name of Allah, I have placed my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.

Reciting these duas during travel serves as a reminder of our absolute dependence on Allah throughout our journey and strengthens the connection with our Creator. As we continue on our path, may we always seek guidance from Allah’s divine wisdom, finding comfort and solace in the beautiful duas He has blessed us with.

Importance of Reciting Dua Before Traveling with Ahadees

There are several reasons why reciting Dua for traveling (Safar ki dua) is important in Islam, and these reasons are underscored by the sayings and teachings of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) known as Ahadith. Here’s a breakdown of the significance:

Seeking Allah’s Protection and Guidance :

Travel can be unpredictable, and acknowledging this vulnerability is a core part of Islamic belief. By reciting dua, Muslims entrust their journey to Allah (SWT), seeking His protection from unforeseen difficulties and His guidance in making wise decisions throughout the trip.

Following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ):

Numerous Ahadith emphasize the importance of dua before travel. Here’s a powerful example:

“Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, ‘When anyone of you intends to set out on a journey, he should pray two Rak’ahs (units of prayer) before setting out.’” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

This Hadith highlights the act of performing a voluntary prayer before travel as a recommended practice (Sunnah) established by Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

Increased Blessings and Reward:

Several Ahadith suggest that reciting specific travel duas can bring blessings and rewards. For instance:

“Narrated Abu Dharr: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, ‘Whoever says (when leaving his house): ‘In the Name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, there is no might or power except by Allah,’ (Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alallahi, la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah) it will be said to him: ‘You have been taken care of ( کفِيتَ ), and you have been protected ( وَقِيتَ ),’ and the Satan will depart from him.” (Jami At-Tirmidhi)

This Hadith indicates that reciting a particular dua can lead to divine protection and ward off evil.

Hadith on travel as well as the etiquettes and manners of travelling in Islam

Know the important Hadith on travel as well as the etiquettes and manners of travelling in Islam. Find out the Intentions for travellers and Istikhara dua in English and Arabic with translation.

Performing Istikharah before travel - Dua in Arabic and English

By mufti shafique a jakhura.

Before embarking upon a journey it is preferable to do Istikharah (which literally means to seek goodness). Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) has mentioned with regards to Istikharah, “The person who does Istikharah will never suffer loss”

The method of Istikharah, is that if it is not a time of the day when Salaah is prohibited or disliked, one should perform two Rakaats of Nafl Salaah and thereafter seek guidance and goodness from Allah (Subhanahu-Sa-Tha'ala) in the form of dua. The dua of Istikharah is in the Travel Dua section.

While reciting this Du'aa when one reaches HAADHAL AMR (THIS MATTER) at both places one should ponder over the matter that one requires guidance on.

It is not always that one will see a dream guiding him towards what he/she should or should not do. In many cases a person just feels inclined towards a certain decision. Whatever the case might be, after doing istikhara one should act upon what one is more inclined towards after the Istikhaarah and by doing so there will always be good in the decision that he/she makes Inshallah. If one is still uncertain, one should repeat the Istikhara and also consult the pious, Allah fearing person and seek their guidance as well.

However, if one does not have the opportunity to do Istikhara in the above mentioned manner, or one requires to make a quick decision regarding a certain matter, then one should recite the following dua in abundance,  اللهم خر لي واختر لي , (Allaahumma khir li wakh tar li), meaning, "O Allah, Choose the correct thing for me and you make the decision for me."

It is permissible for one to ask someone else to do Istikhara for oneself. However, one should also do Istikhara oneself.

Any decision made after Istikhara will Inshallah be beneficial.

Making Intention (Niyyat) for Travel

The travels of this World are an example of one‘s travel towards the hereafter and are there to take lessons from. The objectives of these travels, amongst all other purposes, should always be to direct one‘s attention towards Allah (Subhanahu-Sa-Tha‘ala) and the hereafter. The best traveler is the one that takes lessons from the signs of Allah (Subhanahu-Wa-Tha‘ala) that he witnesses.

One should not pass by places without taking these important lessons from them. One should always be occupied in the preparation of the journey towards one‘s hereafter and hence, always strive to lead one‘s life in accordance with the Sunnah of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam). As such, whenever the occasion to travel may arise during one‘s life, one should endeavour to follow the practice and teachings of Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam). In this way, one would be able to derive the benefits of these actions in both this World and the Hereafter.

The Intentions of Journey

When undertaking a journey, many different intentions could be added to one‘s core purpose of the journey, thereby making a permissible journey an act of Ibaadat and worship and thus being rewarded abundantly even for journeys that may outwardly not even appear to be virtuous acts.

One should make as many intentions as possible. The more virtuous the intentions, the more the reward! Remember that the intention of a believer is greater than his/her action.

The following are some intentions that one could make for one‘s travels:

To meet friends and relatives, find out regarding their well-being, please them by visiting them and maintain family ties.

Travelling with the intention of earning a Halal livelihood and fulfilling one‘s obligations in this regard, e.g. that I will earn Halal wealth and thereafter discharge Zakaat, Sadqatul Fitr, Qurbaani, go for Haj and Umrah, provide for my family, the poor and destitute and in other meritorious avenues.

To acquire good health because the Hadith of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) states that "Travel and attain good health!"

To acquire the knowledge of Deen or to propagate whatever one knows of Deen to others if one gets the correct opportunity.

To help the community in any sphere of their lives if the opportunity arises.

To visit the sick, console the calamity stricken and those in difficulty.

To pay condolences to family of the deceased.

To move dangerous obstacles away from the road so that fellow road users are not inconvenienced.

To perform Haj or Umra. If one were travelling to a place other than the Haramain Sharifain, then too one could intend that one‘s travel is so that one becomes accustomed to travel to the Haramain Sharifain.

To visit the pious servants of Allah (Subhanahu-Sa-Tha‘ala) in the different parts of the World and learn from their advice.

To meet someone solely for the pleasure of Allah (Subhanahu-Sa-Tha‘ala) without there being any other objective.

To intend to make nafl I‘tikaaf in the different Masaajid that one will be visiting during one‘s journey and to intend to pray Salaah, make Zikr, engage in dua and to do good acts at the various places that are on one‘s route.

To learn about the conditions of the community and endeavour to assist in accordance with one‘s ability even if the most one is able to do is to make dua for them.

According to the Hadith, the dua of a traveler is accepted, hence, to travel with the intention of making dua.

To see the manifestations of the greatness of Allah (Subhanahu-Sa-Tha‘ala) by seeing different aspects of nature that have been created by Him in order to enhance His recognition.

In this manner there are many intentions that a person can make before embarking upon a journey. The more the intentions, the greater the reward.

Hadith - Travelling Alone

Translation of sahih bukhari, book 52.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar:The Prophet (SAW) said, "If the people knew what I know about traveling alone, then nobody would travel alone at night."

Hadith - Advice on travel

Translation of malik's muwatta, book 54.

Malik related to me from Abu Ubayd, the mawla of Sulayman ibn Abd al-Malik from Khalid ibn Madan who attributed it to the Prophet (SAW) "Allah, the Blessed and Exalted is kind and loves kindness. He is pleased with it and helps you with it as long as it is not misplaced. When you ride dumb beasts, stop them in their stopping places, and quicken their pace when the land is barren. Travel by night, because the land is travelled faster at night than it is during the day. Beware of pitching tents on the road, for it is the path of animals and the abode of snakes.

Hadith - Hasten the return to his family

Translation of sahih muslim, book 20.

On the authority of Abu Huraira that the Prophet (SAW) said: Travelling is a tortuous experience. It deprives a person of his sleep, his food and drink. When one of you has accomplished his purpose, he should hasten his return to his family.

Hadith - Coming back to family in the morning or in the evening

It has been narrated on the authority of Anas b. Malik that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) would not come (back) to his family by night. He would come to them in the morning or in the evening. Another version of the tradition narrated on some authority is worded differently. It says: (He) would not enter (upon his household at night).

Hadith - Travelling for Knowledge

Translation of sunan abu-dawud, book 25.

Kathir ibn Qays said: I was sitting with AbudDarda' in the mosque of Damascus.

A man came to him and said: AbudDarda, I have come to you from the town of the Apostle of Allah (SAW) for a tradition that I have heard you relate from the Apostle of Allah (SAW). I have come for no other purpose.

He said: I heard the Apostle of Allah (SAW) say: If anyone travels on a road in search of knowledge, Allah will cause him to travel on one of the roads of Paradise. The angels will lower their wings in their great pleasure with one who seeks knowledge, the inhabitants of the heavens and the Earth and the fish in the deep waters will ask forgiveness for the learned man. The superiority of the learned man over the devout is like that of the moon, on the night when it is full, over the rest of the stars. The learned are the heirs of the Prophets, and the Prophets leave neither dinar nor dirham, leaving only knowledge, and he who takes it takes an abundant portion.

When to shorten prayer while traveling

  • Can you join prayers while travelling?

Praise be to Allah.

If you have resolved to stay in the place to which you are travelling for more than four days, then you come under the same ruling as a resident from the moment you arrive there, so you have to do what the residents do, i.e., offer the prayers in full, and it is not permissible for you to shorten them .

You may shorten the prayers during the journey , but when you reach the place you should offer the prayers in full, because you come under the same ruling as a resident.

It says in Fatawa al-Lajnah al-Daimah (8/99):

“The kind of travel for which the concession of travel is prescribed is that which is regarded as travel according to custom, and the distance is approximately eighty kilometers. Whoever travels this distance or more may avail himself of the concessions for travellers, such as wiping over his socks for three days and two nights, joining and shortening prayers, and not fasting during Ramadan. If this traveller intends to stay in a place for more than four days, then he should not avail himself of the concessions for travellers. If he intends to stay there for four days or less, then he may avail himself of the concessions for travellers. If a traveller stays in a place but does not know when he will finish his business and cannot state a certain length of time for his stay, then he may avail himself of the concessions for travelling even if he stays for a long time. It makes no difference whether he travels by land or by sea.”

Can you join prayers while travelling?

With regard to joining prayers , it is permissible for a traveller to join Zhuhr and ‘Asr, and Maghrib and ‘Isha, at the time of the earlier or later prayer, depending on what is easiest for him. But it is better for him not to do that unless it is difficult for him to offer every prayer on time.

Based on that, you can join two prayers together during the journey, but when you reach the place where you intend to stay for a month, then you should offer every prayer on time.

You should remember that prayer in congregation is obligatory for travellers as well as others. So try to pray in congregation in the mosque .

And Allah knows best.
