At A Glance

Every year Trek seems to add an acronym or two to the features list that describes their bikes. You could call it marketing or propriety loading, or you could call it evolution. Over the years their ABP Convert, Full Floater, E2, DRCV etc. have been hailed as the answer to problems that the average rider hasn’t really been aware of.

trek remedy 2015 geometry

The fact that the accumulation of all of the above developments have resulted in some of the most competently performing mountain bikes available today suggests that evolution is king. So what have Trek got in store for us this time? Read on as this year Trek may have just surpassed themselves!

We tested the Remedy 9 29 which is the alloy version, it comes in a “love it or hate it” blue and orange; personally I hated it, but have grown to only mildly dislike it now. Some friends, however, have been quite smitten with it, so it’s obviously got that ‘Marmite effect’. The next model up comes in carbon and features a quieter black and red livery.

So apart from a ‘look at me’ colour way what have Trek tweaked for this years’ Remedy? Well this is the 29er Remedy so it now benefits from Boost148, this is a wider hub spacing. What this allows is a wider hub flange, which in turn allows for a wider spoke base, this gives a claimed 15% increase in the strength of the rear wheel.

There is a knock-on effect that means a custom crank is used to ensure the Q factor remains the same, but the chainline is stepped out by 3mm. A further knock-on is wider chainstays so larger volume tyres will fit. It’s an interesting development aimed at 29er bikes with a goal to stiffen the rear wheel.

Next up is the development of the RE:aktiv rear shock. It looks like a Fox DRCV shock and it is a Fox DRCV shock, the difference is that Trek went and got Penske involved. Penske Racing is a specialist, bespoke, high-end suspension company. They supply suspension to at least half of the Formula 1 racing teams and many other top end automotive racing teams across the globe.

The RE in the RE:aktiv is reference to the Penske regressive damper. This is a spring-loaded valve. When the valve is closed it applies low speed compression, this allows a firm pedalling platform and resists geometry changes bought about during body weight shifts etc. The shock holds up well in normal trail riding situations.

When a high pressure spike occurs a large amount of oil is allowed to flow through the shim assembly, giving instant plushness, yet as the spike continues the resistance created as the oil flows through the ports increases high speed resistance, avoiding bottoming and controlling the stroke throughout its range. In layman’s terms, you get electronic shock performance without any need for batteries.

Up front a Rock Shox Pike RC 140mm fork with custom G2 Geometry slots into the E2 headtube. Drivetrain duties are handled with aplomb by Sram X1 11-speed kit and the brakes are Shimano XT. Bontrager Expert tyres in 2.3 guise adorn the Sram 30 wheelset with the custom Boost148 rear wheel. A Rock Shox Reverb stealth is the highlight of the finishing kit. Bontrager provide 750mm wide low-rise bars, 70mm stem and an Evoke saddle.

On The Trail

Straight off the bat the Remedy 9 felt right. The riding position is comfortable, with weight distribution feeling nicely placed in the centre of the bike. There is a slight bias toward weighting the front wheel but not so much as to feel too racy or create any wrist discomfort.

Get on the pedals and the bike glides smoothly on the fast rolling Bontrager rubber, they are a summer combination but held up well throughout the test, which saw its fair share of wet conditions. There is more to this easy speed than the rubber though, this is the first signs of what the new RE:aktiv shock is all about.

The bike just feels stable. Point it up and it holds itself like a lady with a straight back, it does not sink into its travel.

It pedals uphill with ease, a sort of calmness; efficient yet active. It is not the ruthless efficiency of some VPP designs, nor the open, active feel of some others. The position is such that only very minor shifts in weight are required and when it comes time to clamber up and over steps or rooty sections the rear wheel tracks the ground with subtlety.

It is on what I refer to as ‘trails’ that the Trek Remedy 9 29 impressed the most. Those trails that have a bit of everything; flow, drops, ups and downs, roots, rocks…you get the picture. On these sections the bike really does give confidence. Get on the gas and the bike is stiff and reactive, keep the hammer down over choppy ground and the bike seems to take the top off the bumps, feedback is clear but not harsh.

Hit a series of corners and it grips hard, the rear staying composed, tight and then getting just light enough on the exit to make flicking the bike over for the next one a dream. Hit a big root bed at Mach 5 and the RE:aktiv shock responds in an instant, opening the shock and then controlling the stroke, off the root bed and it is back to a stable hard pedalling platform again.

The shock has the usual Fox CTD settings, the Climb and Trail modes make use of the RE:aktiv damper whilst the Descend mode leaves the shock wide open. In the past we always found ourselves fiddling with the knob or worse still forgetting we had left it in the Climb mode halfway down a hill.

If you leave this shock in Trail mode it just does all the work for you. You can ride around all day and not feel like you are missing out. In fact in the Descend mode the shock loses some of it’s lively feel and almost deadens the bike. Trek and the team at Penske have really worked wonders here, it’s active suspension without the need for you to twist levers to get the most out of it.

It’s not every mile you ride that can be filled with features though, many if not most miles are on tracks and paths. Here the Remedy really is a mileage muncher, calmly swallowing up the distance yet always happy to play on any little ledges or lips that may present themselves.

Heading downhill is a similar story; the balanced position and superbly controlled suspension make the Remedy 9 an accomplished and eager performer. Stable enough to give confidence yet agile enough to be fun, the Trek was never intimidated and proved itself capable of taking on some proper features, including drops of around 8 feet, landings were extremely well controlled.

The ride - it is taut yet comfortable, calm yet capable, and always composed.

Flow is in this bikes DNA, it just rolls so beautifully through corners and over any terrain, always keeping you informed but never hitting the panic button.

This bike is super-efficient; it’s not just pedalling efficient, it climbs so well, rolls so fast and carries momentum with such aplomb it almost feels like cheating!

Propriety parts, as Trek continue to develop their bikes they are introducing more custom fit parts. This is great on the one hand as it moves technology forwards, but early adopters will be limited for choice for replacements while the component manufacturers catch up.

So have Trek continued their quest to perfect the mountain bike or are Boost148 and RE:aktiv shocks something of a gimmick?

Firstly, Boost148, the introduction of wider rear hubs for long travel 29ers makes good sense and Trek have made a bold move by making a start with the introduction of Boost148.

It is fair to say that the rear end on the Trek Remedy 9 29 was certainly stiff; it was more a stiffness that we did not think about though, rather than flexibility that we noticed, it’s a good balance between feel and response.

Secondly, RE:aktiv, simply put; superb!

The DRCV shock has always impressed, but the addition of the RE:aktiv damper has really pushed the boundary of what a shock can do.

The Remedy rode fantastically, the levels of control exhibited by the RE:aktiv shock were in fact shocking!

Add to this the excellent Pike up front, a solid spec list and the benefit of years of evolution in terms of geometry, and yes, all those acronyms, and you get one very capable machine.

The Remedy 29 is one of the easiest, most stable and confidence-inspiring bikes on the planet…period.

His first mountain bike was a Trek 820, which he bought in 1990. It didn’t take him long to earn himself a trip to the hospital on it, and he’s never looked back since. Trek Remedy

Words/photos By Chili Dog

The Trek Remedy is a staple in the history of mountain bikes. The namesake has evolved greatly over the last decade, but to the die-hard fan, one can still see the DNA. Over the years it has evolved, but much of the bike’s core principals have remained. It has always been Trek’s aggressive, all mountain ready for anything trail slayer, regardless of wheel size or head tube numbers. We’ve spent six months on the latest Remedy and are ready to report our findings.

As full-time media hacks, it isn’t often that we get to experience what actual bike ownership is like. While it may seem cool at first to have your garage be a revolving door of new bikes, sometimes it’s nice to have something that’s actually “yours” and sticks around for a while.

Normally we do our best to accelerate the wear and tear a bike will receive during its life in the shorter test periods some brands offer, but thanks to Trek’s generosity we’ve been able to ride the Remedy 9.9 since August of last year. Although tempting to rush out a review in hopes of being the first, we decided to hang onto the bike and give it a proper long-term testing.

For 2019 Trek made some notable changes to the Remedy. Tire clearance has been increased and Trek now specs the bike with 2.6” Bontrager tires. Should the 2.6 rubber not be enough, the bike has clearance for up to 2.8″ tires. Trek achieved this by removing any provisions for a front derailleur and eliminating the Full Floater suspension design that they have relied on since 2010. Trek claims that the elimination of the Full Floater system increased stiffness 5%.

Trek also made changes to the seat tube. With more riders opting for longer dropper posts, Trek increased the insertion length 10mm over the outgoing Remedy seat tubes. Trek maintained the OCLV Carbon frame making process, which is brilliantly explained by Cam McCaul in video form here . Trek also maintains their Active Braking Pivot, and RE:aktiv with Thru Shaft suspension design. Both increase the bike’s action under braking, and improve its willingness to respond to terrain on the trail. I won’t be shy when I say Trek has some of the best suspension on the market.

To firmly align the Remedy in its all-around trail bike niche, Trek also steepened the seat tube angle to 68.5 degrees. The extra degree over last year’s bike puts the rider in a better power position for climbing exertions. Adjustable geometry remains, thanks to Trek’s Mino Link flip chip. The chip offers a low and high setting with a half-degree change to the head angle. It also raises the bottom bracket height from 13.70-in to 14.01-in.

So where does that leave the Remedy in respect to geo numbers? Very balanced. Though the YouTube commenters may have convinced you that you aren’t a true 2019 bike without a 500mm reach and 60 degree head tube angle, actual trail riding says otherwise.

A size large Remedy (19.5 frame) has a 66.0-degree head angle in the high position and a 65.5-degree head angle in the low position. Reach is 46.1cm in high and 45.5cm in low. Chainstays are 43.3cm in high and 43.5cm in the low position. As trail bike geo goes, it’s right in line with a lot of our favorite bikes, providing plenty good pedaling response, but still maintaining the ability to hit aggressive lines. The 160/150mm of travel certainly helps that cause.

Spec Our 9.9 model comes equipped with a Fox Factory 36 Float, GRIP2 damper. Out back is a Trek specific Rock Shox Deluxe RT3, RE:aktiv with Trek’s Thru Shaft 3-position damper custom tuned by Trek Suspension Lab. Our top of the line 9.9 model comes packing the heat with carbon Bontrager Line 30 wheels, and a SRAM XO1 Eagle drivetrain.

SRAM XO1 Eagle cranks also keep on the premium theme while four piston Shimano Deore XT brakes do the stopping. A host of high end Bontrager parts round out the build with a Line dropper post, Line Pro carbon bars and Line Pro stem. Trek maintains their Knock Block headset spec for 2019 as well. To make the increased tire clearance worthwhile, Trek specs 27.5×2.6 Bontrager SE4 Team Issue tires. With all that carbon, this bike tips the scales at 27.8 pounds!

Coming into this review, we were already fans of the previous generation of Remedy, however, we were curious to see how the elimination of the Full Floater suspension would impact the ride. I can say with full confidence that the 5% stiffness increase was immediately noticeable… just kidding. Jokes aside, the bike certainly doesn’t lack in stiffness.

The reason that Trek eliminated the Full Floater design was because they decided that suspension technology had advanced to the point that it was no longer necessary. We whole-heartedly agree, as I didn’t once long for the outgoing design.

With 160/150mm of travel, the numbers would actually put this bike more in the Enduro category. In fact, the Trek Slash has the same travel as the Remedy, however, the Remedy’s 27.5” wheels and slightly different geometry make it a much different bike.

Going Up With such a low weight and balanced geometry, it’s no surprise that the Trek Remedy impressed us with its power transfer and climbing ability. One area where it exceeded ahead of bikes like the Canyon Strive however, is in bump roll-over and sensitivity while climbing. Some bikes with less effective suspension designs tend to get hung up on square edges or rocks, robbing your forward inertia. The Remedy simply floats over them. It isn’t quite to the level climbing sensitivity that Naild suspended bikes like the Marin Mount Vision or Polygon Square One have, but it’s still ahead of most of the competition. Any bike can climb a fire road well with a locked out shock, but climbing technical, rocky trails is where great bikes are separated from the good.

We also found the riding position encouraged long days in the saddle. The 74.7-degree effective seat tube angle puts the rider in an effective position to transfer power without falling off the back of the bike and losing traction at the front. The Bontrager Arvada saddle was also quite cozy on the rump.

Going Down It wouldn’t be a Loam Wolf bike review if we didn’t send a bike through bike park hell, and the poor Remedy has gotten more than its fair share, surviving the rugged tech of Mammoth Mountain, the flow of Sky Park and the endless jumps of Snow Summit. After two months of bike park duty, the rear shock began to weep worrisome amounts of internal fluids. After a quick email to Trek, a new shock arrived and has been trouble free since.

While we thought the suspension did a good job going up, it’s especially impressive going down. The Remedy gobbles whatever is in front of it, but will still happily pop up and over a trail obstacle at a moment’s notice. The ultra low weight contributed to that feeling as well. While the 2.6 tires did an amazing job in the soft, kitty litter soil of Mammoth, we found them to be a bit much on our home single track and on the bike park jump trails. We’d probably move down to 2.5” rubber for most of our riding, but that choice is entirely terrain dependent. We can say that regardless of tire spec, the Remedy’s geometry encourages the nailing of corners and the boosting of jumps. I did have to get used to the sensation of the Knock Block however when doing whips and tables. If it were up to me, I’d ditch that feature.

The Wolf’s Last Word

It isn’t often that we get to spend this long with a bike, and after spending this much time with my Remedy it really reminded me of the love a person grows for their bike. The Trek Remedy has won us over with its impressive ability to do absolutely everything. As a stand-alone do it all bike, the Remedy is hard to beat, and it manages to do all that without any fancy travel adjusters or levers. Instead it relies on good design, and top of the line suspension performance.

The best part is that it presents a solid value. While the 9.9’s $7,349 price may give some a shock, it actually isn’t a bad value compared to similarly spec’d bikes from other brands. Step down to the 9.8 model and you get practically the same performance for just $5,499. Suffice to say we like this bike a lot, and see it as one of our top picks for the trail bike category in 2019.

We just received our 2019 Trek Slash 9.9 rest rig and we’re excited to see how the Remedy’s big brother stacks up. Head over to our Patreon to watch the exclusive unboxing video.

You’re in for a wild ride Remedy is a hard-charging trail bike for technical terrain and rowdy descents. It’s the mountain biker’s mountain bike, built with a 160mm fork and 150mm of rear travel, snappy 27.5˝ wheels, and all the stoke-worthy features that make it perfect for hitting jumps, roosting corners, and throwing down on the trail.

“I was blown away”

“I was blown away at how stiff the new Remedy is. Just right for agressive trail riding. The sum of the parts adds up to a greaty refined bike, but perhaps the biggest story is the increased value.!

“Top of the pack”

“Overnight, the Remedy has become our new favorite test bike in the quiver. It’s snappy, responsive, and accelerates like a rocket ship.”

There might be similar bikes out there, but Trek’s suspension is worth paying for. This bike smooths junk out better than anything Iðve ridden before“

“Loves wild terrain”

Really good at slow-speed technical terrain, an exceptional climber, and holds its own almost everywhere else. Better than ever“

The mountain biker’s mountain bike

Remedy makes order out of chaos. It keeps you confident and composed even when you’re charging the sketchiest lines—and that’s thanks to trail tech designed to keep you in control when your line’s a bit unwieldy.

Like a tuxedo for the trail

Every model comes dressed to impress with a SRAM Eagle 1x12 drivetrain, the latest 160mm front suspension from RockShox or FOX, 27.5˝ x 2.6˝ tires (with clearance up to 2.8˝), and multiple frame color options.

Wheels ready to rip

Remedy’s 27.5˝ wheels give you extra-sharp handling and a more playful feel. Plus, they make the bike easier to throw around, which is key when you’re charging steep lines with jumps or whipping through the rough stuff.

Active Braking Pivot A rear that won’t quit

Trek’s exclusive Active Braking Pivot keeps your suspension active while you’re braking (which is when you need it most).

Mino Link For that “juuust right” fit and feel

Mino Link lets you quickly and easily make small geometry adjustments to suit your riding style or terrain.

Additional MTB options

If you’re gonna get just one mountain bike, make it this one. Fuel EX is fast on singletrack, capable in the rough, and fun wherever you ride it.

This long-travel 29er is the trail bike of trail bikes. The burly 170mm/160mm suspension and super-slack geometry is ideal for fast enduro lines and heavy-hitting park runs.

This electric mountain bike charges rough trails just like its non-electric brethren, then powers you right back up for another run—no shuttle necessary.

  • Segezha Group : will install four bag production lines in Lobnya

One of Segezha Group's ( MOEX : SGZH, a part of Sistema PJSFC) strategic priorities is expanding its presence on the Russian domestic paper packaging market and creating new processing facilities.

The group is currently equipping a branch of Segezha Packaging LLC in Lobnya, Moscow Region , with modern bag production lines. With an investment of approximately RUB 1 billion , the new plant is designed to produce over 138 million consumer packaging units per year.

Two production lines for consumer packaging were launched in Q1 2021 with great results. The equipment is supplied by the German machine building company Garant Maschinen. The delivery of two more machines is expected in Q2, but these will be manufactured by the American-French concern Holweg Weber. The lines will make it easier to flexibly change packaging formats, including switching between flat and twist handles, all on the same equipment. In addition, in 2021 Segezha Group signed contracts for the delivery of a new slitting machine and SOMA, a Czech-produced eight-colour flexo printing machine to Lobnya, which will expand the asset's technological and printing capabilities.

Around the world, the use of paper packaging is constantly expanding. Segezha Group's products are environmentally friendly and easy to reprocess. The packaging is used at enterprises that produce dry construction mixtures, cement, chemical products, fertilizers, animal products, charcoal, and food. The holding's packaging solutions are in high demand in the retail, e-commerce, and delivery markets.

Nowadays the holding's processing assets are mastering new packaging solutions: small-format packaging and bags with windows. Our innovative 3-5 kg small-size packaging for dry construction mixtures and windowed paper bags for fruit and vegetables received the industry's Part Awards at the 25th International exhibition for the packaging industry, RosUpack, in June 2021 . The company's next innovative packaging solutions will be fully biodegradable yet impermeable bags, as well as consumer packaging using biopolymers. These plans will be facilitated by the launch of an R&D centre for packaging in Segezha this year.

Segezha Group's processing capacity has reached about 1.6 billion items per year. It has 3 plants in Russia and 7 in Europe . The Group's sales territory covers 45 countries.
