What to Eat and Drink in Samal Island

While most known restaurants on the island are served in the resorts, there are quite a few stand-alone restaurants where you can dine in. Here are some recommended restaurants found on Samal Island.

Local Cuisine

The local cuisine in Samal Island is similar to what you can also have in Davao City and the rest of Davao del Norte. Make sure to make space for these mouth-watering dishes you can try in Samal Island.

Amik appears almost like pancit bihon but is made from cassava or corn and is crunchier, a little oily, and sweet. Local Muslims love having this during Ramadan.

Sutokil dish in the Philippines

Sutokil is a medley of fresh food sourced from the island. It could be seafood or land-based meat but prepared and served in a different way as its name suggest. Sutokil is contracted from the words: Sugba, which means grilled, Tola (boiled), and Kinilaw (marinated in vinegar).

So, when you order a Sutokil, expect to be served with a plateful of kinilaw na tuna (tuna ceviche), grilled liempo (pork belly), or fish or chicken tinola.

Cap your island-hopping tour with cold beers and a plateful of Pasayan. This dish of deep-fried shrimps cooked with flavorful oyster sauce is a great choice for an appetizer and finger-licking nighttime snack.

Piniritong Ikog Sa Bariles

Loosely translated as deep-fried tuna fish tail, this mouth-crackling dish is served with calamansi, vinegar, and soy sauce.

Imbaw is a clam soup cooked with a bevy of fresh vegetables that make your bowl pop with color and burst with rich taste.

Sinugbang Bagaybay

Sinugbang bagaybay or grilled tuna fish roe is a fish roe of a female tuna, that is served with a side dish of atchara and salted egg. It also comes with a special sauce. It is one of the appetizing dishes you can order at the many seafood restaurants in Samal Island.

Sinugbang Bodboron

This is another sumptuous seafood dish composed of grilled mackerel and served with a side dish of eggplant salad, relish of tomatoes, and spicy vinegar dip.

Recommended Best Restaurants and Bars

The gastronomic scene in Samal Island is mostly comprised of fresh seafood and farm to table ingredients. Rest assured, you will find plenty of healthy food choices here.

Meat lovers need not worry as well because grilled meat dishes—among other all-time favorite Filipino food —are also widely available on the island.

Still underrated compared to the food scene in Boracay, El Nido, Siargao, and Bohol, yet the culinary scene of Samal is starting to get the attention of foodie travelers.

To help you fuel up for the many tiring yet thrilling activities on the island, here are some highly-recommended restaurants for your food exploration of the island.

The Bahay Kubo Restaurant

This hidden foodie gem is located on the coastal town of Penaplata and tucked in a narrow path near the beach. This restaurant, despite owned by a Swiss couple, radiates with a mouthwatering fusion of Filipino and European cuisine.

The restaurant brings an island feel thanks to its open-air rustic design where you can feel the cool wind as you feast on your food. Must-tries include tuna steak, roast beef, fried potatoes, beef meatballs, and basically the rest of the menu.

Farmer’s V Resort and Grill

Serving locally brewed coffee, healthy snacks, and local cuisine, this is another all-time favorite dining place on the island of Samal. Cooking with ingredients from local farms, this is a favorite place of bikers exploring the island.

Aznebo Grill & Restaurant

Facade of Aznebo Grill & Restaurant

Serving the freshest ingredients sourced from the island, Aznebo Grill & Restaurant is a perfect place for a group of family and friends to enjoy a feast of Filipino food such as kinilaw (ceviche), bulalo (bone marrow stew), sizzling squid, grilled tuna, pinakbet (vegetable and shrimp stew) and more.

If you're looking to load up after a day of island hopping and fun in the sun, then this is a great choice.

The Spice Hut

The Spice Hut is a two-story kubo (nipa hut)-styled restaurant that serves a fusion of Indian, Thai, and Filipino cuisine. One of the restaurant's most popular dish is a fresh lapu-lapu—usually 2-3 feet long—and cooked like an Indian curry fish.

Other must-tries include Thai red curry beef, kedgeree (smoked fish and curried rice with egg), nasi goreng, and Indian prawn curry.

HABAK Habhaban sa Babak

Entrance to HABAK Habhaban sa Babak

Serving the freshest seafood cooked and prepared in different ways, this restaurant also serves lunch and dinner buffet. A great place to dine with the family or friends.

Inside the Cafe Tribu in Samal Island

If you're on the lookout for great coffee in Samal Island, then head out to Cafe Tribu. They serve 100% Philippine-grown coffee beans sourced from the local coffee farms in the Davao region.

Support local and drink good coffee. Plus, they also serve kakanin (rice cakes), rice meals, and fruit shakes.

Samal Mango Haven

Inside the Samal Mango Haven in Samal Island

This is the place to be for refreshing healthy drinks and other fruit smoothies—especially mango. They also serve lunch buffet that is light on the pocket. Not only that, but you can also detoxify your body further by taking a dip on a kawa hot bath, which they also offer.

The beautiful Island Garden City of Samal: 16 things to do

The Philippines is an archipelago of 7,107 islands. Most of these are attractive islands but there a few which seem to stand above the rest. The Island Garden City of Samal – composed of 7 islets – is one of these because of its unspoiled beauty. “A little paradise on earth” is how people described the place.  (READ:  From Davao City, make the trip to these 8 beautiful beaches )

Located in the heart of the Davao Gulf, Samal City is physically unattached to the mainland of Mindanao although it only 900 meters east of Davao City. It has a stretch of over 118 kilometers of continuous coastline and with an extensive mountain range at the eastern coast, a number of isolated hills and uneven distribution of lowlands.

“The water is crystal clear throughout the coastline, which varies in terrain from gently sloping sand beaches to steep cliffs and rock formations,” the Davao regional office of the Department of Tourism informs. “The colors of the coastline at the beach areas transform itself from the green lush vegetation of coconut trees, to the white sandy beaches, to the dark blue color of the sea, with its deep waters and coral reefs.” (READ: Davao City: Your complete weekend itinerary )

Samal has so many things to offer to its guests and visitors. Three days are not enough to explore its serene surroundings and wildlife treasures. Here’s a rundown of what you can do:

1. Laze around all day at the Pearl Farm Beach Resort . Frolic along the white sand, walk under the trees, or simply have a good time while singing karaoke at the Parola bar at night.  A bonus: The food served in Maranao Restaurant is amazing so you do not have to worry if you will like them or not.

2. Conquer your fear by riding the giant slides of Bluejaz Beach Resort and Water Park ( www.bluejaz.net ). The slides are 130 meters long and consist of two serpentine flume rides that drop 30 meters from top to bottom.

BLUEJAZ. Take the plunge

3. Have your picture taken with the fire dancers while they are doing their thing.  Do this only after they have already performed. Fire dancing is featured in some special events of Pearl Farm and Bluejaz resorts.

4. Take a dip in the natural swimming pools of Hagimit Falls, a low-dropping cascade with huge rock formations gushing forth water and mammoth boulders that seemed to have existed for eons. The place is well-covered by the canopy of full-grown trees, from the searing heat of the sun.

visit samal logo

5. Visit the 224-hectare facility of the Island Garden City of Samal Mariculture Park in  sitio  Leydao, Kaputian District. Touted as an “industrial park on sea,” it is the first of its kind in the Philippines.

6. Go spelunking. There are more than seventy identified natural covers in Samal. Balete and Mangongawong caves offer trails of excitement while Baga cave looks like an undersea tunnel.

CANOPY WALK. Watch your step!

7. Scale Mount Puting Bato (so named because of the sheer limestone wall with a towering height of about 1,362 feet above sea level) and get to experience the thrills of climbing and be rewarded with a picturesque view of the land, sea and sky once you reach the top.

8. Go biking. The Cycling Advocates and Adventures listed the city as one of the top sites for biker.  “A must-ride for bikers not only from the South,” it said. “The relative peace and order here is a great way for cyclists to get introduced to Mindanao.”

9. Walk. You can go almost everywhere around the island to discover the unbeaten paths. Samal has a total land area of 30,130 hectares. (The modes of transportation in the city are motorcycles and buses.)

10. Feel like a bird when walking on top of the canopies of trees at the Maxima Resort Aqua Fun  in  barangay  Cawag.  If you fear heights, don’t look down!  Another thing you can do: take the tarpaulin slide and plunge into the open sea.

11. Take a cruise around Samal Island and get to see almost 50 beach resorts scattered all over the island. Islands Banca Cruises Davao has specially designed tours ranging from a half day island hopping tour to an entire day of cruising through the Davao channel.

MALIPANO ISLAND. Visit if you're in the area

12. Take a dip at the Vanishing Island in barangay Tambo before it disappears when the tide gets high. It is also an excellent spot for kids to do snorkeling and beach combing.

13. Marvel at the sight of the more than two million bats living inside the Monfort Bats Conservation Park. It has been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

14. Go below the waters. The Pearl Farm is a natural haven of scuba diving as its waters had been declared a marine sanctuary. Just 60 meters away from the resort are two sunken Japanese World War II ships that await discovery. You can go to the islets of Talikud and Liguid where you will find beautiful coral reefs and amazing marine life.

15. Capture the beauty of the rice fields in barangay Aumbay, the island’s only rice granary. I had seen the same picturesque rice fields in Ifugao (Mountain Province) and Bali (Indonesia) but I was not expecting to see the same view in the middle of Samal.

SEA OF GREEN. Take it all in

16. Join fishermen while they are looking for fish in some parts of the island. This is usually done in the early morning or late afternoon.

GO BOATING. Accompany the locals. Those views!

Looking for places to stay and food to eat? Don’t worry; the island has plenty.  Among those we recommend, aside from those mentioned earlier, are Hof Gorei Beach Resort, Paradise Island Park and Beach Resort, Punta del Sol Beach Resort,  Fernandez Beach Resort, Mayumi Disney Sea Beach Resort, and Blue Water Village and Resort. All these resorts also offer food to their guests and visitors.

Samal’s launch pad is in Davao city, about 45 minutes away by motorboat. You can go to Sta. Ana Wharf and Km 11 Wharf in Davao where there are small boats and even a ferry (if you are bringing you car). If you are staying in one of the big resorts such as Pearl Farm, they have a separate motorboat for you.

If you are trying to get there from Manila or Cebu, you can take a plane to Davao. It has daily flights to and from the city via Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines. You can also get there by sea via Superferry and Sulpicio Lines from Manila or Cebu. Land trip to Davao from Manila is also available via Bicol, but it is going to be a very long journey. – Rappler.com

Samal Island Travel Guide:The Island Garden City

Samal

Beautiful and exotic, the Island Garden City of Samal or IGaCoS, a part of the Metropolitan Davao area, is a great destination if you are looking for tranquility, great adventures and extreme challenges with nature.

Samal is an island paradise located in Davao Gulf, just a stone throw away from Davao City. The island is blessed with beautiful coast with white sand beaches, abundant marine life, magnificent rock formations, and flourishing flora and fauna. It is home to the famous Pearl Farm Beach Resort, which was once literally a pearl farm.

Samal

A guided tour of the island will let you discover its inland treasures – rivers, waterfalls, heritage houses, and the world renowned cave that hosts the world’s biggest colony of fruit bats. Local and foreign scientists say that the cave (one of the 70 caves in the island) is home to millions of Geoffrey’s Rousette Fruit Bat. But the beauty of the island is not just its white and unspoiled beaches or its diverse natural attractions but its warm and lovely people as well. All these make this island a potential world-class eco tourism destination in this part of the Philippines.

Samal Island, also known as the Island Garden City of Samal, is a true gem located in the province of Davao del Norte in the Davao Region of the Philippines. It’s comprised of Samal Island itself and the smaller Talikud Island, both nestled in the pristine waters of the Davao Gulf. But Samal Island isn’t just about the beaches and water activities. Venture into the heart of the island, and you’ll be rewarded with lush greenery and majestic hills. Trek through the scenic trails and embrace the serenity of nature. Samal Island, Davao (2024 Complete Travel Guide)

I never knew Davao had access to probably one of the best beaches in the Philippines. I only found out recently that Samal Island was accessible from the city. It’s just 30 minutes away by boat. So if you’re ever feeling stressed at work in Davao, just ride a boat and let the beach take all your worries away.

Sounds good to be true? Nah. It’s real and true.

If I were to compare it to another beach in the Philippines, it would be Kalanggaman Island (sorry, I haven’t been to Boracay yet sooooo). Both islands had fine, white sand and the waters surrounding them are clear and turquoise blue in color.

It’s paradise, I tell you.

Do you have travel insurance? This is something you should have but wish you never want to use. Accidents can happen anytime and having travel insurance can save you a lot of money in case something goes wrong during your travels! Never travel without one. Get a free quote here.

SAMAL ISLAND TRAVEL GUIDE

How to get to samal island davao, getting to samal island from davao city.

If you are getting to Samal Island from Davao City. There are two options:

Option 1:  Take 2 jeepneys from the city to Sta. Ana Wharf and from there, ride the Palboros boat to go to Kaputian, Samal. This is  the cheapest option  and it will cost around 20 PHP for the jeepneys and 60 PHP for a one-way boat.

Option 2:  Take 2 jeepneys to Sasa Wharf and from there, ride the bus. The bus will go on board a vessel ship to Samal. We really love these local experiences in our travels. From Penaplata, you can ride the shared tricycle to Kaputian for 75 PHP each for around 20 kilometers. This can be an option if the weather is bad since the ferry takes only 5 minutes to get to Samal Island.

We had to choose the second option to get to Samal Island from Davao City (we definitely wanted the first). As there were some locals who informed us that the boats from Sta. Ana Wharf were not sailing the day we were traveling due to some weather complications.

From Kaputian, we walked a few minutes to Purok Cacao, where we stayed with Russian friends while  doing Couchsurfing . Turns out, there was a small Russian community in this area, which made our trip visiting Samal Island much more interesting

SAMAL ISLAND TOURIST SPOTS AND THINGS TO DO IN SAMAL ISLAND DAVAO

1. snorkeling in samal island davao.

The waters in Samal is definitely super clear, even in the port area! We stayed in Kaputian, and instead of swimming directly in the resort (where there is an entrance fee), we walked more towards where the local boats were parked and started to swim there.

In the Philippines, you need to pay for every local beach that you visit. So we swam and snorkeled as much as we could. You can easily see fishes, corals and even starfishes in the crystal clear waters.

2. SWIMMING IN KAPUTIAN BEACH

Of course, if you are near the beach, it will be a crime not to swim. Kaputian Beach is perfect for swimming. Mind you, there were a couple of beaches in Asia we didn’t get to swim. Such shame, we know. Kaputian Beach is accessible, very beautiful waters like the one in Samal Island, we made sure we swim all the time.
