Thus begins the third book in the OUTLANDER series, in which we learn that—despite his best efforts—Jamie Fraser did not die on the battlefield at Culloden. He isn’t pleased. Back in the 20th century, Claire is equally shocked by the revelation of Jamie’s survival—but much more pleased about it. We hear Jamie’s story as he moves forward, trying to forge a life from the bits of his soul and his country that are left, and hear Claire’s brief recounting of the twenty years since she left him at Culloden, while Roger MacKenzie and Brianna (Claire and Jamie’s daughter) draw close to each other as they sleuth through the clues of the past, in an urgent hunt for Jamie Fraser. Can they find him? And if they do, will Claire go back to him? And if she does… what will happen then?

To be honest, it would be easier to describe what doesn’t happen than what does.  The story moves from the ghosts of Samhain in the Scottish Highlands to the streets and brothels of Edinburgh, to the turbulent open sea and the adventures of the West Indies. Printing presses, sedition, murder, voodoo, Chinese foot-fetishism, kidnapping, turtle soup, and a number of other things. Behind them all, though, is Jamie’s question:

"Will ye take me, Sassenach? And risk the man I am, for the sake of the man I was?"

Voyager Craft Coffee Heads in New Directions in Silicon Valley

It was fitting that Voyager Craft Coffee would start off as a mobile coffee bar in 2015.

With its creative menu and multiroaster format, the company’s voyage continued less than two years later with the dropping of an anchor at its first brick-and-mortar shop in Santa Clara, California. In February of this year, another new frontier opened wide upon the launch of Voyager’s 1,250-square-foot roasting facility in Palo Alto.

Finally, just last week, a second retail outlet extended the brand’s adventure into neighboring San Jose, at the San Pedro Square Market .

Voyager Craft Coffee Owners Lauren Burns and Sameer Shah promised themselves, their workers and their customers from the start that a roasting program would someday arrive. Burns told Daily Coffee News that they’re not only elated for having fulfilled that promise, but also for the stride forward in control over the quality of their products and intimacy with their supply chain.

“For so many reasons, this was intensely meaningful to us,” Burns told DCN.

Samples are roasted on an Ikawa sample roaster , a San Franciscan 3-kilo roaster facilitates small batches of particularly precious coffees, and a 15-kilo Giesen roaster handles larger production roasts. A Decent Espresso machine helps the team experiment with extractions in the quality control and cupping lab. Said Burns, “We have some cool toys in there.”

Cool toys are also brightening the company’s new coffee bar in San Jose, including a mint green powder coated Synesso Hydra 3-group espresso machine that plays well with Mahlkönig and Mazzer grinders.

These set the stage for such exotic voyage-inspired concoctions as the Valencia, which combines coffee with coconut milk, vanilla and evaporated orange blossom water. The Bali is espresso mixed with coconut milk, honey and the twang of cayenne pepper, and the Shanghai blends almost-over-extracted jasmine tea with a double shot of espresso, rounded with a smidge of honey and a swirl of something milky.

“When staff members go on vacation, we always ask them what the culinary highlights were and if any particular food item or ingredient made an impression on them,” said Burns. “We then experiment with those ingredients and see how it works. Our goal is to make unique, impactful drinks that, for the most part, have never been done before.”

According to Burns, the new shop offers an “absolutely huge” shared seating area within the San Pedro Market, compared to Voyager’s 1,200-square-foot Santa Clara shop where, despite a recent remodel, seats are still typically filled by 10 a.m. To offer Market customers a break from the otherwise industrial feel of the place, Burns said Voyager’s retail design aimed for cheeriness and color.

“We wanted to make the space bright and lively,” said Burns. “Amid this darker backdrop, we elected to accent our space with a vibrant, almost life-giving green.”

Burns said a third Voyager cafe is in the works for later this year at a Santa Clara location, although they are not yet disclosing the exact spot. With its retail enterprise growing, the Giesen is being reined in for house use.

“We are actually declining wholesale clients right now because of the complexity involved in standing up both a roastery and two stores within a six-month span,” said Burns. “Once we stabilize, we’ll aim for dead center to get it going right.”

Voyager Craft Coffee’s new location in the San Pedro Square Market is open now at 87 N. San Pedro St. in San Jose.

Not to big. Super busy and super crowded. Also has outside seating. Yummy coffee options and teas. Great patries. Avocado toast and brie toast also good.

Great breakfast place with good coffee. Liked the attention to detail. Had the famously avocado toast. Tried the Santiago coffee and an almond milk latte. The almond toast was meh.

They have the BEST craft coffee and especially their signature drinks that you can have hot or cold and with different milks, soy, almond, oat, regular, etc. So it's signature made to order! On top of that their toasts are so good - so much... variety. My favorite are any of their baked goods - not your "store bought" variety but homemade, fresh, delicate and delicious. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and if you happen to be in when the owners are there - jackpot! They definitely know their coffee and how to make a "getting coffee" an "experience" vs just an activity. A really nice local coffee place with a great asssortment of baked goods. Plenty of tables inside and out. Right across the street from Santa Clara University.

The staff is super knowledgeable and service is great. Chai Latte is memorable. Am definitely returning back.

I visited Voyager with my sister in law and niece while they visited San Jose. Niece purchased a hot chocolate, which was awesome and came with pretty art that kept her occupied for a while. S-i-l got an almond latte, she said it was perfect.... I got their matcha and it was the best one I've probably ever had in my life. The service and ambiance are also amazing. No wonder they're so well rated. More

Limited parking and small dining in and out but it's worth it. Some breakfast items and baked goods. Water dishes on patio for the doggies.

I’m writing this review as I stand in Voyager, sipping the seasonal Pumpkintown brew. With distinct amounts of nutmeg and pumpkin purée, it invokes memories of mom’s pumpkin pies over the holidays. Simply fantastic. My friend ordered the Savannah, a minty iced delight with real... mint leaves in it. Both of us are very happy at the moment. Also notably was the friendly staff, who walked us through the menu. They even offered to replace our drinks if we didn’t like them with something else! That’s a great way to keep happy repeat customers! Nicely situated off the main road, with plenty of light coming in. Along with plenty of tables and wifi, it’s a great place to sit, relax, and maybe work a little. All and all I will definitely stop here again! More

I’ve been enjoying lattes, espressos, and other coffee-based drinks here for the past two years or more. Staff is friendly, accommodating, and nice. Once a regular they remember not only your name, but also your drink, which in my case come with specifications. It was... a coffee shop under a different name/management- and passed as barely ok. Now it is my #1 choice if I want a good latte & too lazy to make it at home, or want to meet w/others. With all the weird coffee abominations offered by Starbucks & it’s likes, their Savannah is the only non-espresso based drink I enjoy (over ice) and enjoy it every time. They offer neighborhood discount too. Only regret: it’s a small space. Sometimes, there’s no seats available. More

First visit and will become my regular stop. Friendly service, relaxed atmosphere and exceptional coffee. I tried the Bali and it was perfectly balanced. The cafe macchiato was also perfect. We did not order food but the food we saw going out looked great. Skip... the rest and visit - you will not be disappointed. More

We are coffee snobs and know good coffee on the first sip. My daughter recommended that we try this place. We ordered the Goat Cheese toast, Brie toast, colorful cappuccino, and two iced Savannah mint & bourbon coffees. My two picky girls loved the toast... and I was pleased with the flavor of my coffee it was first rate goodness to say the least. More

We had the avocado Brie sandwich very tasty $5. The blue goat toast also delicious $4. Two coffee drinks. The Santiago a bit spicy $4.90 a latte $3.90 and chocolate milk $3. Total $25.80. Outside seating. Nice staff. Nice place for lunch.
