WAYOUTBACK Desert Safaris

Wayoutback is a genuine small group operator carrying a maximum of only 7, 9, or 14 passengers in a late model air-conditioned Toyota Landcruiser and Mitsubishi Canter 4WDs. We don’t do buses so you won’t feel like you’re being herded around, plus there’s a fine chance we’ll actually get to know each other. This also makes the logistics of travelling in a group that much more efficient, meaning more time to relax and not be rushed around.

Wayoutbacks Available tours:

  • 3 Day Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon
  • 1.5 Day Perentie Dreaming Red Centre Safari
  • 3 Day Uluru 4WD Safari
  • 5 Day Uluru 4WD Safari
  • 6 Day Photographic Safari

The name ‘Wayoutback’ typifies our belief that the only authentic way to experience the desert is by getting away from the crowds and immersing yourself in the beauty and vastness of the outback – driving dirt tracks, bush camping, cooking over a camp-fire and sleeping out under the stars.

Of all the 2 and 3 day tours on offer into Alice Springs and Ayers Rock respectively, theirs is the only Safari to utilize unsealed outback roads as well as following 4-wheel drive bush tracks over sand dunes and through riverbeds.

On the 5 day 4WD Safari we are the only company getting right off the beaten track, cutting through two huge cattle stations on our way from Uluru (Ayers Rock) to Watarrka (Kings Canyon). We 4-wheel drive from Curtin Springs Station through breathtaking scenery that very few people have laid eyes on, emerging at Kings Creek Station about 30km from Watarrka.

Their 2 day 4WD Safari is the only one of its kind. It takes in the ancient beauty of the West MacDonnell Ranges and Palm Valley. Our bush camp is situated on the Finke River, a perfect spot for a night under the stars.

Their “not so wayout” mission is to make your trip one of the most memorable you’ll ever have.

Wayoutback Australian Safaris

Wayoutback 1.

Due to COVID-19, some tours are not currently operating, including this one. Please continue to check this website for further updates as the situation progresses. Thanks for your understanding.

Since 1999, Wayoutback Australian Safaris has been providing travellers with unforgettable experiences at Ulu r u and other NT highlights.

The company prides itself on the high standard of its guides, who are passionate about Australia and providing a sound knowledge of local history, Aboriginal culture, geology and the environment.

Wayoutback offers two styles of tours to Ulu r u-Kata Tju t a:

  • Budget adventure tours are designed for those on a budget and are aimed at youthful, fun-loving travellers. These safaris are restricted to the 18–40 age group and travel in air-conditioned minibuses. While more basic in nature, these safaris include some private camps as well as a chance to sleep in a swag under the stars in the Red Centre (tents available for an additional fee).
  • 4WD safaris are suitable for anyone seeking an authentic outback experience with a moderate level of comfort. These tours use remote and some powered campsites with hot water, flushing toilets and permanent safari tents with beds, linen, pillows and sleeping bags. Swags are also available for those wanting to sleep out under the stars.

Wayoutback Australian Safaris has Advanced Ecotourism certification, Climate Action Certification and Respect our Culture (ROC) Certification, which recognises the company’s sustainable business philosophy, environmental practices and respect of Indigenous cultural protocols.

Wayoutback is a proud holder of a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.

Wayoutback Australian Safaris

  • Founded year 1999

Established in 1999, Wayoutback Australian Safaris has forged an enviable reputation for running authentic small group experiences, incorporating indigenous culture for adventure travellers. From Uluru (Ayers Rock), the red heart of Australia, to the Tropical waterfalls and wetlands of Kakadu National Park, Wayoutback Australian Safaris deliver quality experiences throughout the Northern Territory. Our Safaris comprise different styles, catering for travellers of varying ages and budget. At Wayoutback we are passionate about what we do and with intimate knowledge of the areas in which we operate, allows us to pass on this knowledge with all who travel with us. We pride ourselves on the dedicated people within our team who work tirelessly to turn dreams into reality. For over 17 years Wayoutback has been working on building lasting relationships with a vast array of local contacts and exploring the most beautiful and often spectacular locations, enabling us to provide the most unforgettable lifetime experiences possible. If you want to experience the “icons, culture and the traditions” of the Northern Territory, then Wayoutback Australian Safaris is for you. Our commitment to offering authentic Aboriginal interaction Wayoutback works closely with many of the traditional land owners in the regions in which we operate. While all of our guides are experienced in Aboriginal Culture, history and Dreamtime, we believe that to get a thorough understanding of the Northern Territory then meeting and interacting with local Aboriginal people is paramount. They have been living in the area for in excess of 20,000 years and have a unique history and relationship with the land. To hear their stories first-hand will give you an insight you won’t forget in a hurry.  We are proud to partner with Aboriginal owned and operated companies in the Northern Territory including: Oak Valley Aboriginal Community The  Oak Valley Aboriginal Community south of Alice Springs is an inspirational Aboriginal owned and operated tour business and community which we visit on our 5 Day Tours. It lies in beautiful desert country boasting its own fossil field, rock carvings and paintings as well as an olive plantation. Here you can learn directly from local Aboriginal people about their way of life, art and hunting. Maruku @ Uluru (Ayers Rock) The name Maruku literally means “belonging to black”. This is because Maruku is owned and operated by Anangu, the Aboriginal people from the Western and Central Deserts of Australia. For over 30 years Maruku has operated as a not-for-profit art and craft corporation. Guests on our Classic 4WD Safaris in the Red Centre experience Maraku as part of their tour. Sharing stories and passing on traditional methods of painting plays an important part in the sustainability of Aboriginal culture, the world oldest living culture. Starting with a walk to the cave paintings near Mutitjulu Waterhole at the base of Uluru (Ayers Rock), you will be guided by an Anangu who will be telling you the stories of this unique landscape and explaining the connection between the Art, their Culture and deep connection to the Land. This is followed by a hands on painting session, an experience offering an exclusive insight into the meaning behind the art and traditional Anangu culture. Arnhem Land Arnhem Land is one area in Australia where indigenous culture is still dominant. The local Aboriginal people have a long history interacting with other cultures such as the Macassens who visited the shores of Arnhem Land for more than five hundred years to harvest sea slug. They came by sailing boats from the Indonesian Island of Sulawesi and left their legacy with the Aboriginal people. Then the Europeans arrived and their impact on Aboriginal people was far-reaching and profound. Arnhem Land today has weathered all the storms and it has managed to remain as a last frontier and homeland of around 20,000 people. Our 4 and 5 day Arnhem Land tours travel into Arnhem Land where a traditional Aboriginal guide will take you up Injalak Hill and show you excellent and prolific examples of Aboriginal rock art. This area has some of the best rock art examples in western Arnhem Land. The view from the top of the hill is simply breathtaking with views out over the floodplains and across to the breathtaking escarpment. Visit the award winning Injalak Art and Craft Centre and browse or purchase goods from this non-profit Aboriginal organisation. The art centre is simply stunning and the range of artwork is inspiring. There will also be time to watch the traditional Aboriginal people painting and an opportunity to see local women weaving pandanus baskets. Top Didj and Art Gallery The Top Didj Cultural Experience in the Northern Territory was founded in April 2009 by Alex and Petrena Ariston.  Alex and Petrena identified the need for cultural interaction with the Aboriginal people of Katherine. They were passionate about capturing this rich culture and providing an avenue for local indigenous artists to tell their story and to showcase traditional activities such as fire lighting, spear and boomerang throwing, painting while educating visitors of their culture and way of life. The cultural experience is designed to promote a positive experience with the aboriginal people. They have a beautiful culture which amazes many travellers and can be experienced by Wayoutback guests on our 5 Day Jabiru and Arnhem Land Safaris. The Top Didj Art Gallery holds a portfolio of artists from the region. The gallery reflects the cultural diversity and influences from the Jawoyn and Dagoman Aborigines who have lived in the area for thousands of years. The gallery also has a range of strong collections from the celebrated regions of Arnhem Land, the Kimberleys and the Central Western Desert, home to the Warlpiri people. Katherine is central to these regions. Alex and Petrina work closely with the Katherine Indigenous community to assist local artists with employment and provide other practical support such as housing.

Why book with Us

A Wayoutback tour will be one of the highlights of your trip to Australia, so why not make it “super special” by really getting in amongst it rather than just seeing it (big difference). The name “WAYOUTBACK” typifies our belief that the only way to experience the authentic  Australian Outback is to get far away from the crowds, bounce your way along bush tracks in a 4WD, swim in remote waterholes, camp in the middle of nowhere, cook over an open camp fire and drift off to sleep under the stars by the fire – a truly outback Australian tradition! While we offer tours for those on a budget with our Budget Adventure tours, it is our belief that our Classic 4WD Tours offer a truly authentic outback experience and for that reason they are our number one sellers. Because we are a genuine small group operator, we may not be the cheapest tour around but we’re confident we are the best and offer the best value. All our vehicles and equipment are of a very high standard, our campsites are well chosen spots away from other tourists, our guides are well trained and friendly, and we use top quality equipment to give you that feeling of confidence. Taking our environmental responsibilities seriously Australia possesses a diverse array of environments, some of the most delicate on the planet. More so than many other tourist destinations, the Red Centre is a very fragile environment and so in order to preserve our own future we need to ensure all our activities are sustainable and representative of all facets of the region including indigenous culture. Wayoutback operates the only Level IV Advanced Eco-Certified Tours from its base in Alice Springs. It is the highest acknowledgement for environmental understanding, operational practices and cultural representation as defined by Ecotourism Australia. Respect Our Culture Program Wayoutback has Level IV Respect our Culture (ROC) Certification. This program recognizes our sustainable business philosophy on the environmental and recognition of cultural respect to and protocols towards the Indigenous families and peoples of the great southern land, particularly to those families we support within the Red Centre. Climate Action Certification Program Wayoutback Australian Safaris has just realised Climate Action Certification over its entire Northern Territory touring operations. The Climate Action Certification Program (CACP) is dedicated to ranking efforts to reduce carbon emissions. The CACP is administered and audited jointly by Sustainable Tourism Australia and Eco Tourism Australia

Spent a lot of time researching companies to go into the outback with while keeping group size small, experience unforgettable, and a great itinerary. We finally settled on Wayoutback. The itinerary that we went with was 3 days 2 nights going to Uluru, Kings Canyon, and the Olgas where we would sleep under the stars in a group of less than 15 and do some hiking in the area. This company is pretty well established and is very highly reviewed online. Unfortunately for us, we were put with a guide doing her first tour in 2 years. This caused some issues. We got picked up an hour late in a vehicle without heat (in the Aussie Winter). When we finally got to Uluru, there was an issue with her permit to go into the park which caused further delay. When we made it to the start of the basewalk/climb, it was too close to sunset to do either, so we drove around Uluru. For anyone going to the outback, Uluru is the reason at least 95% of people go. Personally, I would have done the climb, but you should be able to do the basewalk. We did neither. Completely unacceptable. While a little rusty, our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. However, some of the group management skills needed to be sharpened. When setting up camp etc, there did not seem to be a plan that could be delegated and most people were standing around not knowing what to do until people in the group took charge. While the trip is geared towards moderate hiking trips, members of our group were not able to do some of the hikes or had to do a shorter hike as they were not interested in doing the default hikes. As a couple in our late 20's we were disappointed to be in a group mixed of 40 somethings with young children and 50+ couples. This isn't necessarily the fault of WOB. The outback is beautiful, the hikes were interesting and sometimes challenging, and the weather held up. Luckily, you can experience all of that no matter what company you choose. I found the time and group management to be lacking to the point of being distracting. One might say, the pace of life is different in Australia, this is typical. unfortunately, while on the trip we bumped into groups from other companies and other groups from the same company and the experience was very different. After our trip, I tried communicating with customer service at wayoutback to discuss our issues with the trip. (Namely being in a vehicle with no heat when mornings were around 30 degrees and not being able to do arguably the #1 attraction). At about 3 weeks since my first email (with 2 subsequent emails) I have not heard anything back. Not encouraging. While I dont know another company to recommend, I would not suggest this company to anyone.

It's something you need to do once. Pro: The tour guide So-so: Meals and beds (I didn't expect luxury) Suggestions for the tour company: Invest in some interior lighting for the tents, get decent air conditioning for the tour bus.

If you don't read the rest of my review, I want to emphasize one point: DO NOT PAY FOR THE 4WD. I chose Wayoutback tours after much research and talking to some Austrialians. I liked that they are an Austrailian company that grew from smaller roots. However, as far as the Red Center tours go, I would go with another company if you're looking for mildly upgraded amenities. The 3 day 355 ASD tour is exactly like what other companies provide (you see the same exact buses and groups and each and every site and campground). It's not worth paying double for the 4WD. If you want to see Uluru, Olgas, etc., just rough and tough it for 355 ASD and rest assured that you're not being short changed--you're just getting what you paid for. There is absolutely no need for the 4wd. They advertise more luxury amenities of better food, "secluded" and nicer campgrounds, shower facilities, a "champagne toast" (cheap champagne in dirty plastic cups surrounded by hoards of other tourists), and unrivalled experience driving 4wd. However, it's twice as expensive (695ASD), but with the same bare bones amenities as the 3-day red center bus tour (355 ASD). Do not be fooled into paying more for nothing. 1. We only were driving on a dirt road the last day for about 4 hours. The only difference from driving on the paved roads was a much bumpier ride and one brief encounter with a band of wild horses. The 4WD vehicle they have is actually much more uncomfortable (vibrates a lot like a truck), old, and dirtier than a coach bus. 2. We got bare bones food. If this is "upgraded" food, I can't imagine what basic food would be. Every day for lunch for 23 people, we had two loafs of white bread, one pack of deli meat, one can of tuna, tomatoes, lettuce, shredded cheese, and maybe sliced cucumbers. We ran out of food on several occasions both at lunch and dinner. One night, one of the tourists had to eat the lunch food for dinner because he was 10 minutes late to dinner. All the food was gone! 3. They tout "secluded" campsites, but we were just further away from the restrooms and maybe two campsites away from the more "party" tours who were next to each other. Same campgrounds, just a little more distance. 4. One guide to 22 tourists does not work! Our guide would drive the 4WD truck (which he always warned us after a long drive that he was really cranky so we should leave him alone for a while), set up the campsite kitchen, cook, and try to guide us. On our walk around Uluru base, we walked by ourselves for 2 hours while he moved the truck and joined us to tell us a couple stories before taking off. 5. When they don't get enough tourists to pay for the 4WD tour, they will just upgrade the bus tour group to the 4WD. So now, you're on a tour with mostly 16-22 years old who paid half of what you paid for exactly the same thing. Don't let them take advantage of you. Went on the 3 day 4WD Gohanna dreaming tour May 2014 for $695 ASD

BEWARE if you value the following qualities of a tour company: customer service and keeping promises! We did the 3 day 4WD Goanna dreaming tour to Uluru, Olgas, Kings canyon. The experience we had was rather disappointing in a number of ways. The promised service was not delivered in accordance with the description for the tour in their brochure! My partner and I discussed at length before we booked the tour, whether we should take the "3 day Cockatoo dreaming red center safari" or the "3 day 4WD Goanna dreaming". The "Cockatoo dreaming" is roughly half the prize of the "Goanna dreaming" tour! I have done a "cheap/basic" 4WD outback tour in the red center about 9 years ago, which was great. So I did not have an issue with either tour. After reading and comparing what services are included etc. we decided to "treat" ourselves and booked the "4WD Goanna dreaming tour" (the more expensive one, which included also 4WD!) - to our big regret now!! Because we paid nearly double the prize, but would have probably received the same "service" in the end with the more basic (and half the prize) tour! The way they describe that tour in their brochure does absolutely not align with what they offered in the end: - The promised sleeping bags were not provided (we had 3-4 degrees at night and only a thin acrylic blanket), - 4WD - was not really required as we drove tarmac roads for 95 % anyway, - Equipment was poor, e.g. zippers at tents were not working, broken beds and ripped fabric on mattresses, old blankets. - Watching the sunset away from the crowds. Really? Is being on a car park with 600 other people away from the crowds? - A glass of wine with dinner. Yup if you bought it yourself at one of the stores in the national park -The food was very basic, you would expect a bit more after reading their brochure describing the food as"quality food". We provided feedback accordingly and received a standard response one day later with the promise that within 72 hours (=3days) we would receive a further response. Almost 6 weeks later we still haven't heard anything!!!. PS: Our guide was great - we were not disappointed with her, she did everything she could. But we are disappointed by the condition of the equipment and supplies provided by the company and are very disappointed with the customer service of this company!

Loved my tour, the guide was super sweet and knew so much about the region. We saw some awesome sights and ate really well with food cooked over the fire. I loved sleeping in a swag and looking at the stars. I can't wait to go back!
