June-like warmth to start the week

WARMING UP!

Rain will clear quickly overnight, lasting a little longer on the Cape and Islands. Watch for some areas of fog to develop overnight as well. Monday will feature a bit more sunshine, it will also be much warmer with highs in the mid-70s! There could be a spot shower along an approaching boundary in the afternoon, but most stay dry. Tuesday will be the pick of the week with more sunshine and warmer temperatures in the upper 70s. Enjoy this summer preview while it lasts!

LATER THIS WEEK

More unsettled weather is on the way later in the week. A front will bring the risk for showers and storms on Wednesday, we will keep the rain chance in there each day through the end of the week. It won’t be as warm either with temperatures gradually dropping to the upper 50s heading into the weekend. Stay with us for the latest on the timing of the rain and the other impacts you could see this week.

Weather | Keep the umbrellas handy – you may want one every day this week, NWS says

You may need a coat by wednesday too, with cooler wet weather forecast.

It was a day for umbrellas Sunday in the Public Garden, where visitors out for a walk were treated to a spectacular display of spring flowers. (Chris Christo/Boston Herald)

The good news is that there won’t be much in the way of gusting wind to bring down power lines or knock your trash cans over, NWS Meteorologist Bryce Williams told the Herald, the bad is that the forecast for each of the next seven days in the Greater Boston region includes some chance of rain and wide swings in the daily temperature.

“This is a temperature roller coaster. We’ve been a bit cool this weekend, and we’re going to see temperatures bumping up into the 70s for many locations tomorrow and Tuesday. Those first two days are going to be the warmest by far and then we’ll start a cooling trend,” Williams said.

Monday will be the driest of the coming days this week, according to the NWS, with just a 30% chance of some precipitation and less than a tenth-of-an-inch expected. Williams said the chance for a few scattered showers will increase through the afternoon and fall again going into the night, when the temperature is expected to drop toward the middle-50s.

“It will be drier than we saw (Sunday), at least,” he said.

Tuesday may feature dry commutes, with most of the 30% chance of rain currently forecast to come in after 5 p.m. The day will be sunny otherwise, according to the NWS, with highs in the mid-70s and overnight lows again in the middle 50s.

It will be cooler Wednesday and “continue to cool a bit each day into the week,” Williams said.

Showers are also more likely on Wednesday, when the weather service is predicting a 70% chance of rain, mainly after 9 a.m. That weather system brings cooler air and leaves temperatures in the mid-to-upper 60s.

The rain should slow after 10 p.m. on Wednesday, NWS forecasts, with overnight lows in the upper-40s.

Rain is expected to return again on Thursday, with a 40% chance of precipitation predicted mostly after noon, according to the NWS. Cloudy skies leave the temperature in the upper-50s or just creeping into the 60s, according to Williams, and overnight lows could fall as low as the middle 40s.

Friday looks about the same as of this point, with another 40% chance of rain called and high temperatures in the upper-50s.

Another weather system heading toward New England could leave both Saturday and Sunday soggy, Williams said.

“Unfortunately, we’ve got periodic chances of rain throughout the week,” Williams said.

U.S. issues travel warning for major European country: ‘Terrorist groups keep planning attacks’

The U.S. State Department has issued a new advisory urging travelers to Europe to be extra vigilant when visiting Germany due to concerns about potential terrorist activity.

The advisory, a Level Two – which suggests heightened caution— was released on May 1 and highlights ongoing threats from terrorist groups in Germany, cautioning travelers to remain alert as attacks could occur with minimal warning, noting that “terrorist groups keep planning attacks in Germany.”

The advisory states: “They target tourist locations and transportation hubs. They also target markets/shopping malls and local government facilities. They target hotels, clubs, and restaurants. They also attack places of worship, parks, and major sporting and cultural events. They target schools, airports, and other public areas.”

For reference, Level Three (Reconsider Travel) and Level Four (Do Not Travel) advisories represent more critical levels. However, Germany’s Level Two advisory is noteworthy, given its significant size in central Europe, robust economy, and second-largest population after Russia.

Over the past year, the most severe travel advisories in Europe were primarily linked to the conflict in Ukraine. Do-not-travel advisories were issued for Ukraine (May 2023), Belarus (July 2023), and Russia (September 2023) due to the ongoing hostilities.

If you must travel to Germany, the State Department recommends:

  • Be aware of your surroundings when traveling to tourist locations and crowded public venues.
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities.
  • Monitor local media for breaking events and adjust your plans based on new information.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program ( STEP ) to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
  • Follow the Department of State on  Facebook  and  Twitter .

Oklahoma and Kansas at High Risk of Extreme Storms and Tornadoes

Severe thunderstorms could bring large hail, damaging winds and powerful tornadoes to the Southern and Central Plains on Monday, forecasters said.

Layers of dark, ominous clouds fill the horizon along a Nebraska highway last month.

By Johnny Diaz

More than 8 million people were under a heightened risk of severe thunderstorms that are likely to bring large hail, damaging winds and powerful tornadoes across parts of the Southern and Central Plains on Monday, weather officials said.

“The biggest area of concern is definitely Oklahoma and portions of south-central Kansas,” Kelly Butler, a meteorologist in the Wichita office of the National Weather Service, said on Sunday.

“There is a chance for strong to potentially long-track tornadoes, including large to giant hail, baseball- and softball-size,” she said.

“Anybody in the affected areas should have a safety plan,” she said.

The Weather Service described the environment in southern Kansas and into Oklahoma as being “similar to some past higher-end and even historic severe weather and tornado events.”

Showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain will develop over parts of eastern Kansas and Nebraska and western Iowa and Missouri as a front moves out of the Rockies, according to the Weather Prediction Center.

The center said there was a moderate risk — a level four out of five — of severe thunderstorms over parts of the Central and Southern Plains on Monday into Tuesday morning.

Many of the storms will be severe and could produce damaging winds and strong tornadoes across south-central Kansas, forecasters said. Hazards associated with these thunderstorms include frequent lightning, wind gusts up to 74 miles per hour and hail of two inches or more in diameter, the center said .

The National Weather Service office in Wichita, Kan ., warned of “bursts of moderate to heavy rain” through Monday morning.

The Weather Prediction Center also warned of a slight risk of excessive rainfall over parts of the Central Plains and Middle Mississippi Valley from Monday into Tuesday morning. The heavy rain could produce flash flooding in urban areas, roads, small streams and low-lying areas.

The severe weather risk comes after more than two dozen tornadoes were reported last weekend and at least five people were killed in Oklahoma and Iowa, including an infant, the authorities said.

Russia announces nuclear weapon drills after angry exchange with senior Western officials

Ukrainian servicemen ride a buggy on a road near Chasiv Yar, Donetsk region, on April 27.

Russia plans to hold drills simulating the use of tactical nuclear weapons, the Defense Ministry announced Monday, days after the Kremlin reacted angrily to comments by senior Western officials about the war in Ukraine.

The drills are in response to “provocative statements and threats of certain Western officials regarding the Russian Federation,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

It was the first time that Russia has publicly announced drills involving tactical nuclear weapons, though its strategic nuclear forces regularly hold exercises. Tactical nuclear weapons have a lower yield compared to massive warheads that arm intercontinental ballistic missiles intended to obliterate entire cities.

The announcement appeared to be a warning to Ukraine’s Western allies about becoming more deeply involved in the more than two-year war. Some of Ukraine’s Western partners have previously expressed concern about stoking the war amid fears it could spill beyond Ukraine and into a conflict between NATO and Russia.

French President Emmanuel Macron repeated last week that he doesn’t exclude sending troops to Ukraine, and U.K. Foreign Secretary David Cameron said Kyiv’s forces will be able to use British long-range weapons to strike targets inside Russia.

The Kremlin branded those comments as dangerous, heightening tension between Russia and NATO. The war already has placed significant strain on relations between Moscow and the West.

It wasn’t the first time Europe’s military support for Ukraine has irked Russian authorities and prompted nuclear saber-rattling. In March last year, after the U.K. government’s decision to provide Ukraine with armor-piercing shells containing depleted uranium, Putin announced that he intends to deploy tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus.

Tactical nuclear weapons include air bombs, warheads for short-range missiles and artillery munitions and are meant for use on the battlefield.

The ministry said the exercise is intended to “increase the readiness of non-strategic nuclear forces to fulfill combat tasks” and will be held on President Vladimir Putin’s orders. The maneuvers will involve missile units of the Southern Military District along with the air force and the navy, it said.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian drones hit two vehicles Monday in Russia’s Belgorod region, killing six people and injuring 35 others, including two children, local authorities said, in an area frequently struck by Kyiv’s forces in recent months.

One of the vehicles was a minibus that was carrying farm workers, Belgorod Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov said.

No other details were immediately available, and it was not possible to independently confirm the report from the border region.

While Ukraine’s army is largely pinned down on the 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front line due to a shortage of troops and ammunition after more than two years of fighting, it has used its long-range firepower to hit targets deep inside Russia. The apparent aim is to disrupt Russia’s war logistics system by hitting oil refineries and depots, and unnerve the Russian border regions.

The Belgorod region was a staging ground for Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. It has come under regular attack ever since Russian forces retreated there from northeastern Ukraine early in the war following a counteroffensive by Kyiv.

In what has largely been a war of attrition, Russia has also relied heavily on long-range missile, artillery and drones to wreak damage on Ukraine.

At the end of last year, Belgorod officials said 25 people were killed, including five children, and more than 100 were injured in a Ukrainian attack, and regular rocket and drone strikes have continued since then. The area can be reached by relatively simple and mobile weapons such as multiple rocket launchers from forests on the Ukrainian side.

Russian authorities said in March they planned to evacuate about 9,000 children from the area because of continuous shelling, after Putin said he wanted to create a buffer zone to help protect border regions.

Also, the Kremlin’s forces kept up their bombardment of Ukraine’s power grid, with a nighttime Russian drone attack targeting energy infrastructure in Ukraine’s northern region of Sumy. Multiple towns and villages in the region, including Sumy, lost power, regional authorities said.

Russia attacked Ukrainian targets with 13 Shahed drones overnight, 12 of which were intercepted in the Sumy region, Ukraine’s air force said.

The U.S. State Department has reissued a Level 2 travel advisory for Germany due to fears of terrorism.

The State Department issued the advisory on Wednesday, ranking the travel advisory on a scale of two out of four. This means that those traveling to an area must “exercise increased caution.”

“Terrorists may attack with little or no warning,” the State Department noted.

The agency added that terrorists could target tourism and transportation hubs, as well as shopping destinations, hotels, clubs, restaurants, local government facilities and major events.

The State Department noted on its website that for those who do decide to travel to Germany, travelers should pay attention to their surroundings , follow the instructions of local authorities, be aware of the latest breaking news in the area and adjust your plans, if necessary. The organization also urges travelers to Germany to create a contingency plan for emergency situations as well as sign up for the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program  ( STEP ) to receive alerts and make it easier for the State Department to locate you in case of an emergency.

The U.S. Department of State has issued several travel warnings this year with those most recently centered around the Caribbean.

One was a Level 4 “do not travel” warning against traveling to the country of Haiti due to kidnappings and gang violence.

Another warning from the State Department cautioned travelers to “reconsider travel” to the country of Jamaica after 65 people were murdered in one month.
