And nestled at the crown of this Indian state lies a hidden gem that will leave you awestruck with its adventure activities, natural surroundings with orchards, rose gardens and cascading waterfalls  – Yelagiri.

Dating back to the British colonies, Yelagiri or Elagiri is the charming little hill station near Chennai . Yelagiri is one of the tourist places that offers a delightful escape for those seeking tranquillity and natural beauty. Far from the madding crowd, and tucked between Vaniyambadi, and Jolarpettai - two small towns in the district of newly developed Tirupattur district, Yelagiri evokes a sense of peace and calm for those looking for an escape.

Yelagiri's landscape is breathtaking and out of this world. 250 kilometres drive away from Chennai, Yelagiri is an ideal weekend getaway for Chennaites. A getaway that people from far and wide indulge in as well. A large portion of the land is inhabited by tribal folks who make a living from forestry, horticulture, and agriculture in the local areas. One can go explore the Swami Malai Hills, or spend an afternoon on the boats on Nilavoor or Punganoor Lakes, marvelling at sunsets in the Forest Hills. Or make way to the ever-famous Yelagiri summer festival celebrated in the month of May to experience the authentic Yelagiri culture.

Whether you are a nature enthusiast, an adventure seeker, or someone looking for a peaceful retreat, there is an abundance of places to visit in Yelagiri. So pack your imaginary gear and fasten your seatbelts as we take you on a virtual tour of this hidden gem and explore the top attractions and must-visit places in Yelagiri.

Imagine a day spent sitting by a shimmering lake, surrounded by lush greenery, simply lazing around and watching children run around. That is what awaits you at the Punganoor Lake and Park!

As the ultimate relaxation spot, Punganoor Lake is one of the best places to visit in Yelagiri where you can unwind, rent a boat, or paddle across tranquil waters. Take a leisurely stroll, soak in the rejuvenating vibes, and make beautiful memories surrounded by nature's embrace. There is a walking path that circles the lake, a children's park, swings, slides, and other games have been installed for the children's enjoyment.

Peacefully serene, the park is well structured and is one of the most famous artificial lakes in Tamil Nadu and one of the best tourist places to visit in Yelagiri Hills. The beauty and tranquillity of the Pungannoor Lake Park also add to the overall experience. It is also worth noting that the park authorities are very strict about keeping the area clean, so it is critical to keep the area clean and well-maintained.

Telescope Observatory

Spot a star or two and indulge in the studies of the solar system, at the telescope observatory. It is one of the most prominent astronomical observatories situated on Indian soil. An hour and a half drive away from Yelagiri, the observatory houses some of the best telescopes in Asia. Perfect for science enthusiasts, space lovers and star gazers of all kinds, the telescope observatory is by far one of the most exciting tourist places to visit in Yelagiri in Tamil Nadu.

Aside from seeing some of the best telescopes in the observatory in action, indulge in magnificent views of the surroundings through the visitors' telescope. The observatory also provides spectacular views of the night sky on clear moonless nights. You can also observe the flora and fauna, and wildlife prancing freely in the region. Also, since the observatory is only open to those with special entry permits from the authorities. And since it is one of the most famous tourist places in Yelagiri, it is advised to book a session beforehand.

Look through one of the strongest telescopes to see the stars, planets and galaxies up close. Or better yet, join a stargazing event on your visit and allow the wonders of the cosmos to astound you.

Jalagamparai Waterfalls

For those seeking a refreshing escape, a visit to the Jalagamparai Waterfalls is a must. Nestled amidst the picturesque Yelagiri hills and counted among one of the best places to visit in Yelagiri, these cascading wonders will leave you spellbound, especially during the monsoon season when they're in full flow.

Frequented by locals and travellers alike, the journey to the falls is an exciting trek through winding paths and lush forests, making it an exhilarating experience for all you nature enthusiasts out there. The remote location of the cascading waterfall cocoon it from the hustle and bustle of city life, thus providing a calm respite from the daily stresses of life.

The cascade is only accessible through trekking trails which makes it one of the perfect destinations for trek lovers and one that is not to be missed considering the refreshing view it provide at the end of the journey.

Swamimalai Hills

These lofty peaks, shaped like a cake, offer the most awe-inspiring panoramic views of the Yelagiri villages. It is one of those places in Yelagiri that has an abundant scattering of a variety of flora and fauna and is inhabited by tribal communities that earn their keep through agriculture. The hills are also famous for having several temples and shrines which give it the spiritual significance that attracts tourists to Swamimalai Hills.

Another one of the thrill destinations in India where trekking to the summit rewards you with panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and the town below. The trek may be a tad challenging but worth every step.

As you immerse yourself in the serene beauty of nature and catch glimpses of exotic flora and fauna along the way, everything about this location is bound to take your breath away. So, lace up your hiking boots, follow the trail, and let the stunning vistas reward you for your efforts.

From misty clouds to chirping birds sitting atop tall trees to the lake and spiritual essence, a trip to the Swamimalai hills is full of adventure and calm spirituality.

Government Herbal Farm

The most suitable destination for all plant moms and plant dads, this government herbal farm located on Mangalam Road houses a wide variety of herb and ayurvedic plant species. Managed by the Forest Department of Tamil Nadu, the herbal farm has some of the rarest species that are cultivated for medicinal benefits and sold across the country.

Situated close to Puganoor Lake, the visit to this farm can be combined for more comfort. Take a stroll through the lush garden with the sweet smell of herbs tingling the senses or soothe your senses by meandering down the farm to glimpse the rows of plants and trees ripe with fresh juicy fruits.

Best Time to Visit Yelagiri

The months of October to March are the best time to visit Yelagiri. Solitudinarians usually flock to Yelagiri during the winter months of November to February due to the winter night views, uncongested places and low tariff rates. July to September is the best time for monsoon lovers to visit Yelagiri because the place looks vibrant and exuberant with the season's constant downpours. Just the same, Yelagiri weather never gets too hot in summer either, thus any time of year is the best time of the year to visit Yelagiri.

Yelagiri, with its serene landscapes and captivating attractions, is a paradise for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Whether you are up for a leisurely boat ride at Punganoor Lake, a thrilling trek to Jalagamparai Waterfalls, sitting by one of the lakes with a good book and delicious food, or just stretching out under a tree and breathing in the fresh air, this charming hill station has it all. "The Call of the Hills"

Yelagiri tourism.

A quaint little hill station located in Vellore, Yelagiri is just three hours away from Bangalore, making it the perfect spot for a quick weekend getaway. Spread a little over 30 square kilometres, and at a height of over 1100 metres above sea level, Yelagiri offers its tourists some beautiful places like the Jalagamparai falls, sweeping orchards and rose garden, among others. The ideal destination for nature lovers, Yelagiri is a town that is completely off the beaten tourist trail, lending it a quieter and much more peaceful vibe compared to other more famous hill stations nearby. Originally belonging to the Zamindar family of Yelagiri, the hill station began to gain popularity since the colonial rule, when it was used by the British as a summer getaway. Ever since then, it has been one of the hidden gems of South India, replete with rocky hills and natural scenic beauty, making it the perfect place to take a break from the fast-paced city life.

Yelagiri is one of those typical, silent places that seem ordinary on the outside but are more and more startling as you discover it. It has all the features of a great hill station, be it sunset points or lakes and parks. But the beauty of Yelagiri lies in all the more that it has to offer. Being one of the lesser known hill-stations in Tamil Nadu, the place is rarely overcrowded. The surroundings are pristine and the forests are home to some rare species of flora and fauna. The honey that is locally available is considered to be one of the purest and tastiest varieties.

Water main break disrupts businesses, tourist spots in downtown Atlanta, other areas

Atlanta officials say a water main break has interrupted water service and led to low water pressure in the city’s downtown and other parts of Georgia’s capital

ATLANTA -- A water main break has interrupted water service and led to low water pressure in the city's downtown and other parts of Georgia's capital.

Crews on Friday were “working aggressively” to make emergency repairs to the 32-inch water main, the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management said in a statement.

“Water service has been temporarily interrupted, affecting residents, businesses, and hydrants in the area,” the agency said.

The Department of Watershed Management issued a boil water advisory for a large swath of metro Atlanta and asked the public to restrict water usage to allow the pressure in the system to rebuild, WXIA-TV reported. During a boil water advisory, water should be boiled for one minute past a rolling boil. The advisory is in effect until the Georgia Environmental Protection Division clears the Department of Watershed Management to lift it following sampling and testing.

Some Atlanta and Fulton County offices closed because of the issue, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Tourist attractions were also affected, including the Georgia Aquarium, which ended operations early, the newspaper reported.

Zoo Atlanta closed early, at 1 p.m. Friday, because of the water pressure issues, the zoo announced. The zoo, southeast of the downtown area, “has contingency plans in place to ensure that the animals have access to water,” it said in a statement.
