Star Trek: Resurgence gameplay video from Dramatic Labs shows narrative adventure dialogue options & Leonard Nimoy Spock

Star Trek: Resurgence Gameplay Highlights Dialogue Options & a Convincing Spock

Image of Michael Cripe

A short Star Trek: Resurgence gameplay video from developer Dramatic Labs (via IGN ) gives us a good look at some pre-release dialogue options and a convincing Leonard Nimoy Spock impression. The uncut seven-minute clip puts the player at the negotiating table with lots of narrative choices to make. Each decision looks to give players the freedom to steer away or toward conflict. See Star Trek: Resurgence and Spock in action in the gameplay video below.

Dramatic Labs revealed its contribution to the Star Trek universe during The Game Awards 2021. Much of the studio is composed of former Telltale developers who worked on The Walking Dead , Batman , and Game of Thrones video games. Each of those titles features a similar choice-based narrative, so it’s no surprise to see Star Trek: Resurgence adopting those same elements. That said, this game seeks to expand on the tried and true formula with more traditional action-adventure gameplay, including stealth segments, piloting, phaser fights, and more.

Unlike the old Telltale games, Star Trek: Resurgence will release as a single package as opposed to in episodes. The story takes place in the year 2380, immediately after the events of the Star Trek: The Next Generation movies. A more detailed synopsis can be seen below:

Stationed aboard the U.S.S. RESOLUTE, players will assume the role of two principal characters, First Officer Jara Rydek and Engineering Crewperson Carter Diaz, as they unravel a sinister mystery involving two alien civilizations on the brink of war. Throughout the game, players will immerse themselves in the Star Trek universe, interacting with new and returning characters through a variety of dialogue and action gameplay to determine the course of the story.

Star Trek: Resurgence is set to launch for PC via the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X | S sometime this year. Stay tuned for more information from Dramatic Labs.

Star Trek Resurgence Is an Intriguing Blend of Classic Trek and Modern Games Storytelling

The upcoming Star Trek adventure game captures the spirit of The Next Generation, but tells a story of its own.

startrek-char-spock1

While set in the era of Star Trek: The Next Generation, classic series character Spock will be one of the game's key characters.

Star Trek has been around for more than 50 years, shaping the very landscape of modern science fiction across television, films, and novels. Yet, it still seems like the franchise hasn't much explored the realm of video games. There is the massively multiplayer game Star Trek Online, which is still going strong with new updates, but the more philosophical and interpersonal storytelling elements of Star Trek are something that we don't often see in the interactive medium.

That's changing with the upcoming Star Trek: Resurgence, releasing later this year. It's an adventure game coming from former members of the original Telltale Games, creators of Telltale's The Walking Dead, and Batman: The Telltale Series. I got to play a brief demo of Star Trek: Resurgence at GDC 2022, and it felt like stepping back into the era of The Next Generation from an entirely different perspective.

Set after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis (during the era of The Next Generation), Resurgence focuses on two original protagonists, Jara Rydek and Carter Diaz, the newest members of the U.S.S. Resolute. Jara is the newly promoted first officer of the Resolute, working under Captain Solano, while Carter is a wisecracking engineer who is a new transfer to the crew. While both work in separate divisions, their stories become intertwined with the brewing conflict that the crew of the Resolute will need to resolve — with the added help of returning Star Trek character Spock.

"What we wanted to do was to deliver on a broad Star Trek experience, which means doing a lot of different types of gameplay," said lead writer Dan Martin. "It's not strictly a shooter or a strategy game, but rather we're telling a story that has you play through what a lot of Star Trek is -- which is an experience about building relationships and making decisions, as well as elements of shooting a phaser, flying a shuttlecraft, and investigating things with your tricorder. We wanted to make it feel like you're living in one of the movies or in the TV show."

Just like Telltale's previous works, or even classic adventure games like Grim Fandango or The Secret of Monkey Island, Star Trek: Resurgence is a narrative-driven game that lets you explore its world and interact with a host of characters, both original and familiar. During several interactions, you can choose to give a variety of responses, which will result in branches in the conversation. Depending on your choices during talks or in the game's moments of action, you'll change your relationship with some characters, affecting how the plot will move forward.

startrek-env-bridge1

While on the bridge of the U.S.S. Resolute, you'll be able to free talk with characters and interact with the different panels to learn more about the current situation.

While on the Resolute, you can move about and chat with the different members of the crew. It was a nice treat to see the halls of a Federation ship during the era of The Next Generation -- which is a favorite setting of mine. Many of the computer panels and rooms housing 24th-century tech have been recreated from the show, and it was really satisfying to observe the crew at work around ship. This gameplay on its own is compelling, but with the added scope and gravitas of the Star Trek franchise, it gives Resurgence some added depth to its world, that you're stepping into a universe that has seen so many stories and events occur. On the ship, you'll see more call outs to classic Star Trek, along with many familiar characters and species from the universe; such as the Vulcans, the Tril and Cardassians. While Resurgence will primarily feature mostly original characters, some noteworthy legacy characters from the shows and movies will also appear.

One of those characters who will cameo in Resurgence is Spock, who is still arguably the most iconic character from the franchise. On an added note, the actor playing Spock for the late Leonard Nimoy does an outstanding job recreating Nimoy's cadence and speech patterns for the character. During a scene with Jara and Spock, you'll need to pick the appropriate responses to stay professional, stick to the task at hand, or fixate on his reputation as one of the universe's greatest minds. Jara, in particular, will become instrumental in mediating the current conflict, and the tightrope you'll have to face is making the right choices along the way. If anything, playing this short slice of Star Trek: Resurgence felt like playing an interactive version of the fan-favorite TNG episode Lower Decks, which served as the inspiration for the current animated series. That episode focused on lower-ranking members of the Enterprise, all of whom were in orbit of the more well-known characters and would eventually be brought into the fold to help with an upcoming mission.

startrek-char-edsilar

Like Jadzia Dax from Star Trek Deep Space Nine, Edsilar is a host for a Tril, an alien organism that possesses generations of knowledge and personalities from previous hosts.

I can't stress enough that the pairing of a Telltale-style game with Star Trek is a fantastic combo, and Resurgence is certainly leaning into that blend of classic TNG Trek with some modern games storytelling. While I liked the storytelling beats, I did feel somewhat limited during the demo, but I'm still interested in seeing how it'll pan out in the full game. Also, the demo I got to play was quite early, and it had some bugs and hitches that did hamper some of the experience. However, the devs stressed that the build of game would be ironed out as it approaches release.

As a Star Trek fan, it's been really exciting to see the franchise so active recently. With current shows like Picard, Discovery, Lower Decks and the upcoming Strange New Worlds, it's been satisfying to see the expansive universe of Star Trek be given new life, and Resurgence is another promising piece of Star Trek to dive into. And in keeping with all of Star Trek throughout many decades, it features an incredibly diverse cast that not only gives voices to marginalized groups, but also promotes a progressive and positive future for all.

So far, Star Trek: Resurgence felt like a great opportunity to step into the shoes of some unsung heroes in the Star Trek Universe. I felt invested in both Jara and Carter's stories, and I can't wait to see what adventures they'll get up to on away missions or when exploring the decks of the Resolute.

Star Trek Resurgence releases later this year on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

Star Trek’s blend of dialogue and action feels ideal for a Telltale-style game

Dramatic Labs’ Star Trek: Resurgence deviates from the Telltale formula in intriguing ways

Share All sharing options for: Star Trek’s blend of dialogue and action feels ideal for a Telltale-style game

First officer Jara Rydek and engineering ensign Carter Diaz give each other a knowing look on the bridge in a screenshot from Star Trek: Resurgence

Fans of Telltale Games’ style of story-focused games may have been disappointed when the studio closed back in 2018. The studio was later revived with multiple in-development projects, including The Wolf Among Us 2 and a game based on The Expanse . But Telltale’s style lives on beyond Telltale itself, thanks to Dramatic Labs’ Star Trek : Resurgence .

After playing a version of Star Trek : Resurgence , where I sampled three separate scenes, I got the impression of a game that sticks closely to the Telltale formula, but differentiates itself, the developer says, with more action and less complacency from players.

In a post-Telltale world, the former Telltale designers at Dramatic Labs have switched to Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4. They credit Epic’s engine with letting them build bigger environments and set pieces with more direct action that don’t consist entirely of quick-time events. In addition, they’ve updated their philosophies around familiar Telltale game tentpoles like dialogue, removing the “stay silent” option in order to force players to actively engage with the game.

“When we looked at what you get from a Star Trek experience, we wanted to deliver on every angle of that,” said Dan Martin, Star Trek: Resurgence ’s narrative lead. “So while a huge piece of the franchise is people sitting around talking, debating heavy issues, there’s also plenty of action and other types of scenes: mystery, investigation, […] everything you think of as Star Trek, you’re going to get a piece of that with this game.”

First officer Jara Rydek and engineering ensign Carter Diaz discuss their orders in a Starfleet turbolift in a screenshot from Star Trek: Resurgence

In Star Trek: Resurgence , which is set after the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation , players assume the roles of two Starfleet members: first officer Jara Rydek and engineering ensign Carter Diaz. Together, they will, according to Dramatic Labs, “unravel a sinister mystery involving two civilizations on the brink of war.”

Three scenes from Star Trek: Resurgence that we played at Summer Games Fest last month differed significantly from one another, but they also shared the similarities that you’d expect from a Telltale game. In the first scene, Rydek and Diaz gossiped about their crewmates before reporting to their captain on the bridge. When faced with the choice to be respectful or mouth off to their superior officer, I chose to mouth off, testing the limits of how un-Star Trek I could make the scene.

Next, I arrived on an alien planet to help oversee negotiations between two alien races, the Hotari and Alidians, over a Dilithium mining operation. (While Dilithium is an established bit of Trek lore, the two races were invented for the game.) This scene showcased Spock, who’s being skillfully voiced by Piotr Michael in Resurgence . Martin said it was a pleasure to write for an iconic character during a previously unexplored time period.

The negotiation went sour, possibly thanks in part to my attempts to choose the most obnoxious dialogue option at every point, ensuring both sides would walk away offended. Granted, these games have often presented the illusion of player influence when in fact things are largely on rails. However, I definitely managed to earn Spock’s disapproval, which admittedly did not feel good.

In the final scene of the demo, I piloted a slow-moving shuttle while two characters discussed a superior officer. The game presented me with waypoints and the shuttle drifted lazily toward them. It was not exciting, but, it sounds like the action will increase in intensity as the game progresses.

Starfleet crewmembers pilot a shuttle toward a starship and asteroid field in a screenshot from Star Trek: Resurgence

“It’s not going to redefine the genre, but we have a lot of third-person, over-the-shoulder exploration [and puzzle-solving],” Kent Mudle, the game’s cinematics lead, told me. Resurgence will feature phaser shootouts utilizing an arcade-style cover-shooting system, as well as shuttle-piloting scenes that are more hazardous than the “tranquil” (as Mudle put it) experience that I played.

“There’s some actual parts of the game that are not just dialogue choices and clicking on things in a sort of free-walk section,” Mudle said. “There’s action of a type that isn’t just quick-time events. We have some of those too, but we also have some more, like, a little light twitch reflex kind of stuff.”

Like many who work at Dramatic Labs, Mudle and Martin both previously worked at Telltale. They said that they’ve always wanted to expand their games in these directions, but didn’t always have the time, resources, or tools.

“Unreal Engine definitely helps,” Mudle said. “I think it’s also just a desire to do that kind of stuff from the jump. We’ve made a lot of games of this type and we’ve wanted to make them more ‘gamey’ for quite some time to provide more varieties in interaction, different ways to sort of sell being immersed in the story. And we were kind of, just through time and previous engines, not necessarily able to do that without devoting a lot of resources to it.”

Starfleet negotiators speak to a group of aliens in a dialogue screen from Star Trek: Resurgence.

As for the removal of the “stay silent” dialogue option found in previous Telltale games, “You’d be surprised how many people didn’t use it,” Martin said. “There was occasionally the rare silent option where something really interesting happens, but most of the time, somehow the other characters in the room just continue to talk around you and the story keeps going.”

“We’re trying to ask a little more out of the player, to actually be involved and participate,” he added. “Non-participation is not as much of an option as it [used to] be. We’re trying to make you get in there and have to pick a rail, because that results in a more interesting playthrough.”

Based on what I played of Star Trek: Resurgence , fans of Telltale games are going to feel right at home. But it’s the improvements and refinements that the developers spoke of that have me excited to beam into Dramatic Labs’ take on the final frontier.

Star Trek: Resurgence is scheduled to launch this year on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

Jonathan Frakes Reveals How Roddenberry Described Riker & How Nervous He Was In TNG Season 1

  • Gene Roddenberry described Commander Riker as loyal, honest, and patient, which made Jonathan Frakes proud for 37 years.
  • Frakes felt nervous during Star Trek: TNG season 1 but says the cast felt looser in episodes with strong villains.
  • Star Trek: Resurgence incorporates many TNG elements, and Frakes voices Captain Riker in the game.

Jonathan Frakes reveals how Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry described the character of Commander William T. Riker and how "nervous" he was during production of Star Trek: The Next Generation season 1. For 37 years, Frakes has portrayed Riker, who appeared in Star Trek: TNG , four TNG movies, and Star Trek: Picard , as well as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Star Trek: Voyager , and Star Trek: Enterprise . Frakes played Captain Riker in Star Trek: Picard, and Jonathan also voices Captain Riker in the video game Star Trek: Resurgence .

In an interview with Star Trek: Resurgence 's lead writer Dan Martin about Captain Riker's role in the game, Jonathan Frakes discusses how Gene Roddenberry saw Riker as a "loyal, honest, reliable, patient, and with 'derring-do'" . Frakes also spoke about how proud he is to be associated with Riker for nearly four decades. Read Frakes' quote and watch the video of the interview below:

The character of Riker, as Gene Roddenberry created him, was a man who had what Gene used this phrase, he said, He has derring-do, hes incredibly loyal, hes honest, and hes reliable, and hes patient. What great qualities to aspire to, not only as Riker, but as a dad, and a husband, and a friend. And its been a privilege to be associated with this guy for the last 37 years.

Jonathan Frakes also marveled at how Star Trek: Resurgence pulled story and alien villains from the Star Trek: The Next Generation season 1 episode, "The Last Outpost." When Dan Martin asked if Frakes thought of that episode as a turning point for Riker, Jonathan spoke about what it was like for the TNG cast filming season 1:

I wish I could say I did. I think I was so nervous during season one. When we go back and watch clips of these original shows, you can just see were not really quite sure how were supposed to behave because we hadnt found the characters yet. And whenever we went to Planet Hell, which is what we called Stage 16, and we had a strong villain, we were a little bit looser.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Cast & Character Guide

Star Trek: The Next Generation has one of the most beloved cast of characters in all of science fiction. Here are the major characters of the classic.

What Is Jonathan Frakes' Future As Captain Riker In Star Trek?

Fans can interact with captain riker while playing star trek: resurgence.

Jonathan Frakes' acting comeback in Star Trek: Picard season 3 earned him a Saturn Award for Best Actor in a Television Series , but will Frakes get to play Riker again? Like millions of fans, Frakes is hoping Paramount+ greenlights Star Trek: Legacy, the proposed continuation of Picard season 3, whether as an ongoing TV series or a possible 2-hour Star Trek streaming movie . Further, it's hoped that Star Trek: Legacy would have a role for Riker, and would include Will's long-deserved promotion to Admiral.

Jonathan Frakes said he would like to play the Charlie of Charlie's Angels role in Star Trek: Legacy and give Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and the USS Enterprise-G their orders.

Frakes is one of the most beloved and prolific Star Trek directors, and his presence will continue to be felt behind the camera. Frakes is directing the penultimate episode of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, and he is helming a "Hollywood noir" episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. But video game fans can interact with Captain Riker by playing Star Trek: Resurgence , and encountering the Starfleet hero in the post- Star Trek: The Next Generation timeline.
