“Safari Ravenna” Zoological Park

The Zoo Safari Ravenna park is a zero-impact natural area located a few kilometres south of Ravenna, in Savio, opposite the Mirabilandia park.

The zoo park was created with the aim of enhancing its role in the conservation of biodiversity, in order to protect the fauna and the well-being of numerous species, thus safeguarding those at risk of extinction.

The animal park is home to numerous specimens with different histories: when it opened, the organisation decided to rescue some animals from smaller parks that were about to close and, even today, some specimens – such as very rare species of birds – come from seizures by the police who decide to entrust them to the Zoo Safari Park for protection.

The Zoo Safari covers an area of about thirty hectares and, inside, it is possible to observe the animals up close, without barriers, along a 4 km route on board your own vehicle (car/camper/coach), in an electric car or on a small train provided by the park.

Along the route you can meet more than 40 animal species for a total of 450 specimens: among the inhabitants there are lions, tigers, hippos, giraffes, zebras, bison, camels, ostriches, llamas, antelopes and many others that the professional staff takes care of every day.

The Zoo Safari Ravenna is very attentive to the educational aspect, with many options for young and old alike: in the special “Animal Docet” area it is possible to follow a trail among typical farm animals such as cows, sheep, goats, peacocks, etc., with the chance to get close to them, discover their peculiar characteristics thanks to educational stories and even experience the thrill of a horse ride.

Safari Ravenna Zoological Park

In ravenna, in front of mirabilandia, a large zoological park that helps protect animal welfare.

Located in front of the Mirabilandia amusement park, Safari Ravenna is the first “zero impact” wildlife park in Europe, designed with animal welfare in mind and for the preservation and repopulation of endangered species.

Open for visits even on rainy days, it is a great trip for families and for all those who want to something else, apart from going to the seaside, that is full of nature and fun.

Tigers, lions, giraffes, zebras, camels and ostriches...through a 4-km long route on board your own vehicle – in an electric car or on a train and guide provided by the park – you can observe the animals from a very close distance, without barriers or danger.

An area with fenced-in spaces, however, allows you to admire more common animals (such as cows, sheep, ponies or horses) but also more unusual species, such as baboons, lemurs, snakes and chimpanzees.

However, the park is, above all, an educational centre that aims to deepen the relationship between humans and animals and to raise awareness among adults and children so they can learn to have greater respect for the environment and the animal world.

Animal Webcams

Explore our animal webcams 24/7.

We now have 10 webcams available to view throughout the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary in our Tiger, Lion and Lynx habitats. All of these webcams have been provided through generous donations from our supporters and sponsors. These are provided free to view, but there is a cost us to maintain these on a monthly basis, so if you are able please donate to support the ongoing care, every donation no matter how small helps – see link below.!

Softi and Toph Webcams Now Live!

Huge thanks to all of those who donated, our partners and sponsors:

zoo safari ravenna webcam

We have four tiger cams here at the Sanctuary, two in Natasha and Zoppa's habitat, and two in Softi and Toph's enclosure.

We focus on excellent animal welfare; offering a safe forever home to abused animals; conservation by protecting areas of natural tiger habitat in the wild, and education by inspiring you, our wonderful visitors, to care about efforts to protect them.

Natasha & Zoppa

Did you know?   Zoppa carries a noticeable limp on her front leg.  Many of our animals carry physical or emotional scars from their previous life, but rest assured she is in very good hands. Her injury is a permanent disability but she has adapted to it and lives a very good life. Find out more .

Softi & Toph

After a long wait, Softi and Toph finally arrived at their forever home here at Wildheart Animal Sanctuary at the end of April 2023. In October 2019 they were found in small crates in the back of a horse box starving, dehydrated, and covered in excrement bound. They were confiscated at the Belarussian border and we're incredibly pleased to have been able to offer these two amazing animals a forever home here at the Sanctuary. Find out more .

Softi & Toph Webcams generously sponsored by:

zoo safari ravenna webcam

We have four lion cams, one in Kumba and Vigo's habitat and one in their bedroom, and two in Casper and Frosty's enclosure (one is currently being repaired).

Kumba & Vigo

Vigo joined us in February 2019 with his brother Kumba. After a very difficult background in a travelling circus they were rescued by AAP. We feel incredibly lucky to have these two with us. Both Vigo and his brother were castrated before they turned one year old, which has meant that they have not developed manes. The other result has been that they have grown incredibly large! Find out more.

Casper & Frosty

Casper and Frosty came to the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary from West Midlands Safari Park. When the dynamics of the existing lion group there started to pose potential safety problems they needed a safe forever home. Of course, we were more than happy to oblige! Casper is often to be seen atop his favourite rock, surveying the scene below like a true king. On occasion, Frosty likes to demonstrate her playful streak by waiting until Casper is resting, then sneaking up and annoying him! Find out more.

Eurasian Lynx Cams

Daenerys, nymeria and tyrion.

We have three amazing Eurasian Lynx here at the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary which were in desperate need of a new home fast. Named after characters from Game of Thrones, our family consists of mum Daenerys, daughter Nymeria and son Tyrion. They arrived in November 2020 and have now found their forever home here. They are secretive and like to hide away. Although they live as a family group, Lynx are solitary in the wild so we give them plenty of space and hiding places to get away from each other when they want to.Daenerys was born in Norway in 2012, she’s quite laid back but will remind her offspring who’s in charge when she needs to! Tyrion and Nymeria were born in Wales in 2016, and Tyrion loves sitting up on his lookout tower, and is very greedy. Find out more.

These cameras are temporarily unavailable, we hope to have them back up and running soon.

In addition to being educational and entertaining, animal webcams can also play an important role in conservation efforts. Like us, many organisations use webcams to monitor species and their habitats, and to gather valuable data on their behaviour and population dynamics whether that be in the wild or in captivity.

Support Our Webcams

Did you know…. . it costs around £15 per month to run each of our webcams?

How you can help us?

One of our most treasured aims as a charity is to give safe and loving forever homes to rescued big cats and other animals. These creatures have been abused in circuses and the pet trade all over the world. The Sanctuary relies heavily on admissions and donations to support our animals and any financial help whether big or small is really appreciated. We understand that not everyone is able to help us financially, so here are a few ways that you can help The Wildheart Sanctuary in our efforts:

Visit the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary and see for yourself the difference we are making to the lives of our rescued animals and find out how their wild relatives are adapting to life with an ever increasing human population.

Adopt one of our animals. This can be done through our Adoptions page or from direct from our shop at the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary.

As a charity we rely on donations to support the vital work that we do. There are a number of ways you can help us:- make a donation online , arrange your own fundraiser on JustGiving . Please contact us for a fundraising pack.

Become a volunteer at the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary. For more information please email our volunteer coordinator at [email protected] .

Book an animal experience with us – this is a guaranteed way of meeting our animals up close and personal alongside one of our animal carers.

Elephant Cam Archive

ShopZoo Safari Summer on the Savanna

You are watching archived footage of the elephant herd at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, recorded at an earlier date. The live cam is temporarily unavailable, due to construction that is about to begin on the new Denny Sanford Elephant Valley—the largest project in the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's 50-year history—which will completely reimagine the heart of the Safari Park, bringing our community into the epicenter of our global conservation efforts for elephants.

When completed, the reimagined Elephant Valley will provide enhanced opportunities for guests to connect with the herd in new and engaging ways. Through the course of construction, elephant habitat viewing locations will be modified and may at times be limited.

Learn About Elephants      Elephant Blog

Just as their counterparts do on the African savanna, the elephants at the Safari Park live in a social group called a herd, made up of females and their offspring. The leader of the herd—known as the matriarch—is usually the oldest and most experienced female in the group. She keeps the younger elephants in line and teaches them how to behave in elephant society.

The Safari Park’s elephant habitats spread out over six acres, divided into two main yards, providing all the elephants with opportunities for social interaction and with inviting space. With nine African elephants, there’s always something happening!

Meet our elephants:

Mkhaya "Kaia"

Sex:  Female Born:  Safari Park, September 26, 2018 September 2018 weight (at birth):  281 pounds Wildlife care specialists at the Safari Park received a big surprise when they came in to work on the morning of September 27, 2018 and saw that 28-year-old Umngani had given birth to a healthy 281-pound female calf—the biggest calf ever to be born at the Safari Park (calves usually weigh 200 to 268 pounds at birth). By late morning, with the baby appearing healthy and bonded to her mother, animal care staff offered the pair the opportunity to move into a larger area of the habitat with Umngani's other three offspring. The new calf was also introduced to 8-year-old male Emanti and 11-year-old female Phakamile or "Kami". The other elephants rushed to meet the new baby, touching and smelling her with their trunks, all under the watchful eye of her protective mother.

Umzula-zuli "Zuli"

Sex:  Male Born: Safari Park, August 12, 2018 August 2018 weight (one day after birth):  277 pounds In the final hours of World Elephant Day at the Safari Park, just before midnight on August 12, 2018, mother Ndulamitsi gave birth to Umzula-zuli, a male calf, called "Zuli." The next day, Zuli was greeted by the herd's other elephants, who gathered around him—eager to touch him, trumpet, and smell him with their trunks.

Sex:  Female Born:  Kruger National Park, South Africa, approx. 1991 Weight:  6,800 pounds Swazi has been the dominant female in the herd since she arrived. Named in honor of Swaziland, she is the now the largest female in the herd. Any ruckus in the herd and Swazi comes charging over to see what’s going on. Swazi gave birth to her first, long-awaited calf—eMacembe, a male—on April 12, 2010, and a female, Qinisa, on August 28, 2012. Wildlife care specialists suspect that Swazi's vision is not as acute as the other elephants; she is often startled by the less-dominant animals, sometimes even the calves.

Sex:  Female Born:  Kruger National Park, South Africa, approx. 1990 Weight:  6,250 pounds

Umngani (OOM-gah-nee), whose name means “friend” in Siswati, is the mother of Mkhaya, a new female calf born in September 2018—as well as Khosi, Ingadze, and Inhlonipho. Umngani is curious and eagerly participates in care sessions, often roaring at wildlife care specialists if her session ends too soon. Umngani has the longest tusks in the herd, and her ears are often flared out as if she is listening. As beautiful as she is, though, she is also one of the messiest elephants in the herd. You can tell which wildlife care specialists have been working with her: they are frequently spackled with wet mud from her drippy trunk!

NdLulamitsi "NDULA"

Sex:  Female Born:  Kruger National Park, South Africa, approx. 1990 Weight:  6,400 pounds Ndlulamitsi has a great relationship with her wildlife care specialists and often approaches them to solicit a rubdown. She can often be seen in the water, and taking mud baths to cool down. “Ndula” became the first mom of the herd when she gave birth to Vus’musi; son Lutsandvo was born in 2010. In August 2018, she gave birth to son Umzula-zuli. You can identify Ndula, whose name means “taller than trees” due to her great height, by her right tusk, which curves underneath her trunk.

Sex:  Female Born:  Safari Park, September 11, 2006 November 2012 weight:  3,206 pounds

Khosi (KO-see) is short for a name that means "heart of a queen" in SiSwati, in recognition of Yvonne Larsen, former president of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Board of Trustees. Khosi can frequently be seen watching over her younger siblings.

Phakamile "KAMI"

Sex:  Female Born:  Safari Park, September 19, 2007 November 2012 weight:  2,685 pounds

Phakamile's name means "noble strength," to honor the longtime support of Audrey Steele Burnand, whose first name means the same. “Kami” is a great swimmer, is very energetic, and is good at balancing on logs or rocks. Kami's right tusk is very short; a tusk injury required a pulpotomy.

Sex:  Female Born:  Safari Park, August 28, 2012 June 2013 weight:  694 pounds

Qinisa is mother Swazi's second calf. Qinisa's name is a SiSwati word that means to act with energy, act determinedly, fulfill one’s word, or speak the truth. The name is pronounced "EEN-EE-seh," with a tongue pop instead of a q sound). Her name is very fitting, as she is definitely full of energy.

VUS'MUSI "MUSI"

Sex:  Male Born:  Safari Park, February 23, 2004 Weight:  9,000 pounds

Vus'Musi was the first elephant born to the Safari Park herd, to mother Ndula—and "Vus’Musi" means “to build a family” in Siswati. "Musi" rejoined the herd in 2022, on a recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) African Elephant Species Survival Plan (SSP). This collaborative program recommends breeding pairings for genetic diversity, as SDZWA works with partners to secure the future of this endangered species. Musi was already familiar with all of the Safari Park elephants except Umzula–zuli (“Zuli”) and Mkhaya. As an adult male elephant, Musi will play a valued role as a mentor to Zuli.
