Things to know before visiting Angkor Wat

Before we start writing about our experience in Angkor Wat, we want to share some historical facts about the place and some practical information such as entrance fee, opening hours, and where to stay in Siem Reap.

But let’s start by learning a bit about the history behind the archaeological grounds of Angkor.

The story of Angkor

“Angkor” is the Khmer word for “city” and from the 9th to the 15th century, the whole archaeological site of Angkor was actually the capital city of the Khmer empire.

“Wat” means “temple” and it’s a word that’s widely used around Southeast Asia to describe a Buddhist temple.

So “Angkor Wat” actually refers to the biggest temple within the grounds of Angkor, whereas “Angkor” is the name of the whole area including all the temples. However, “Angkor Wat” is widely used when people just refer to visiting the grounds of Angkor (which we also do a few times in this travel blog).

Today, Angkor is a Buddhist religious site where it’s common to see Buddhist monks dressed in their iconic orange robes, walking about, praying, and meditating. However, these Buddhist temples were originally built as Hindu temples during the Khmer empire. That’s why you’ll see Hindu gods in the stone carvings of the temples.

The grounds of Angkor finally became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, which it 100% deserves to be.

Angkor Wat opening hours 2023

This section might seem a bit confusing because there are a few different opening hours in Angkor and Angkor Wat depending on which temples you are visiting. But I’ve tried to make it as simple as possible – so here are the opening hours of 2023.

  • Angkor Wat ticket office opening hours: 5 AM – 5:30 PM.
  • General opening hours for temples in the Angkor grounds: 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM.
  • Places with early opening hours are Srah Srang Lake and Angkor Wat: 5 AM – 5:30 PM.
  • Places with late opening hours are Phnom Bakheng and Pre Rup: 5 AM – 7 PM.

A rule of thumb is to just visit the archaeological park of Angkor when it’s still light outside because it’s closed when it’s dark. If you want to catch the sunrise or the sunset in the Angkor area, then there are a few specific temples (see above) where you can do this.

Angkor Wat entrance fee 2023

The entrance fee to Angkor Wat depends on the amount of days you want to explore the archaeological park. We just bought the 1-day pass because it’s all you need to go explore the small circuit of Angkor Wat. But we certainly see why people buy more days, and ideally we would have loved to get a 3-day pass.

You can either plan ahead and get your admission ticket online or just show up at the ticket office and get your ticket directly at the counter.

Useful tip: If you get your 1-day Pass after 4:45 PM, your pass is valid from that time on + the entire next day. This means that you can actually get a “free” evening and go watch the sunset in Angkor.

These prices might seem a bit steep when you compare them to other price levels in Cambodia. However, some of the money goes to conservation of the place, which it really needs with millions of visitors every year, and some of it goes to a children hospital fund.

Also, there is no entrance fee at Angkor Wat for Cambodians. This means that if you’re Cambodian, then you’re free to walk into the grounds of Angkor and learn about the history of your country.

In our opinion, it’s such a great idea that they’ve made it free for locals or else some Cambodians might never get to visit Angkor Wat because of the price levels.

Where to stay when visiting Angkor Wat

During your visit to Angkor Wat, you’ll want to stay in the nearby city named Siem Reap. Luckily, there are so many hotels and hostel options in the area.

During our trip, we stayed in a hostel named The Hideout. However, I can’t seem to find it on Booking.com anymore. It looks like it may have been replaced by the Mad Monkey Hostel , which is another great place to stay in Siem Reap if you’re looking for a well-located, affordable, and social hostel with a pool.

How to get around Angkor Wat by tuk tuk

Our initial plan was to rent a motorbike and do the small circuit around Angkor and Angkor Wat by ourselves. However, we learned that foreigners aren’t allowed to rent motorbikes or scooters in the Siem Reap region.

Our second plan was then to rent bicycles from our accommodation. However, the morning of our departure, our hostel had completely forgot about it, so we were standing there at 4:30 AM with no mean of transportation that could take us to Angkor Wat.

Luckily for us, a friendly Cambodian named Chen was parked right outside of our hostel in his tuk tuk and he said that he would happily take us around the small circuit of Angkor Wat.

Why go by tuk tuk to Angkor Wat

So, it was actually completely random that we ended up doing a tuk tuk tour around the small circuit of Angkor Wat. But now we can 100% recommend going there by tuk tuk.

First of all, it was a luxury to be driven around instead of having to bicycle the area ourselves. Cambodia is hot and humid, so not having to pedal our way through the jungle was in fact very nice.

Secondly, Chen actually turned out to be a big plus on our day in Angkor. He spoke good English and he told us many stories about how he and his family lived in Cambodia. He also shared more personal stories about how his parents survived the Khmer Rouge and the horrible mass genocide of Cambodia. Spending the day with Chen was honestly so interesting, and we would happily recommend him to any future Angkor Wat visitors.

Lastly, going around Angkor Wat in a tuk tuk is just so much fun!

How to find an Angkor Wat tuk tuk driver

It was dumb luck that we met Chen. He was standing outside our hostel looking for work, and we were standing outside of our hostel without a ride.

But there are so many tuk tuk drivers in Siem Reap which will gladly take you on a tour around the big or small circuit of Angkor Wat.

In fact, walking around Siem Reap as a tourist can actually be rather stressful because of the many “tuk tuk?” that’s constantly thrown at you. At every corner of the city, at least 3 tuk tuk drivers are waiting for work. So, it’s not hard to find someone to take you.

If you want to plan ahead, then you can also easily book an affordable tuk tuk tour on Viator . Apart from tuk tuk tours, you can also find guided tours, sunrise tours, and much more.

The price for a tuk tuk tour in Angkor Wat

We didn’t really have to haggle over price. We just told Chen that we would pay him $20 to take us around for the day, and he gladly accepted. Plus we also ended up paying his lunch ($2) just because he was so nice to us.

After talking with a few fellow travelers, the price to take a tuk tuk around Angkor Wat for a day varies between $20 – $25. We would personally not pay less than $20 since it’s the price for driving you around all day for 8-10 hours.

But if a tuk tuk driver tries to charge you a price like $30 to take you around Angkor Wat, you can either haggle or just move on to another one.

Just make sure to settle on a price before you start your trip to Angkor Wat, so you and the tuk tuk driver are on the same page.

Useful tip: If you’re traveling solo, then find someone nice to go with and split the $20 cost. Then the price for a tuk tuk around Angkor Wat is actually only $10 per person.

What to expect: Angkor Wat small circuit tour

We finally made it to the most exciting part of this Angkor Wat travel guide – the part where we write about all the temples we explored in the small circuit. This trip that we describe took around 8 hours to complete.

1. Srah Srang lake – A beautiful beginning

Most people start the small circuit tour by watching the sunrise over the impressive Angkor Wat temple. But since we were already too late for that, Chen decided to start our trip at the beautiful Srah Srang lake and instead end the tour at Angkor Wat.

It was just after sunrise, which meant that all the tourists were at the Angkor Wat temple and we were all alone at Srah Srang lake.

We sat down and had some breakfast here. Our breakfast consisted of some asian bananas (they’re my favorite) and a few biscuits. It was so peaceful to sit here and eat while looking over this beautiful calm lake.

Srah Srang translates to “The Royal Baths”. We actually don’t know whether it was used to bathe in or not, but because of the name, we can imagine that it may have been the Khmer King’s bath? The lake was dug in the mid 10th-century, so it’s part of the Angkor history.

Useful tip: If you’re looking for a less touristic place to watch the sunrise in Angkor, Srah Srang lake is an amazing little spot to do this.

2. Banteay Kdei – A temple all to ourselves

After finishing our breakfast at Srah Srang Lake, we were ready to go explore some temples! And luckily for us, just opposite the lake, you’ll find Banteay Kdei.

Banteay Kdei was the first temple of the day which we were going to explore. We were the first people to enter when the gate opened, which meant that we found ourselves being the only tourists here. How is that even possible?!

We absolutely loved Banteay Kdei. The temple wasn’t that well-preserved, yet you could feel that it was once a magnificent temple.

Banteay Kdei was built in the mid-12th century and translates into “Citadel of Chambers”. It’s also known as the “Citadel of Monks” because a lot of monks used to occupy the temple.

For us, Banteay Kdei will always be one of our favorite temples in Angkor because it was the first temple we explored, better yet, we explored it almost all alone!

I literally poked my head into a small, enclosed, shrine-looking building and a bat flew straight into my face, which meant that we were the first ones there since nobody had poked their head into that room yet.

We just loved the tranquility of this temple.

Sign that says "Banteay Kdei"

3. Ta Prohm – The famous Tomb Raider temple

After exploring Banteay Kdei, it was time to move on to another temple. And this temple turned out to be much more popular.

As soon as we turned up at the Ta Prohm temple entrance, 5 Cambodians ran towards our tuk tuk and tried to sell us books about Angkor Wat, a sarong, a flute, and other stuff… We understand the books and the sarong, but who buys a flute in Angkor?

Anyways, it just prepared us for this to be a much more touristic place. And it was.

Several big tour groups were walking through this temple. We heard tour groups in Spanish, Chinese, and English. It was a complete contrast to the quiet Banteay Kdei which we had just visited.

The main reason why Ta Prohm gained so much popularity is because it was featured in the movie “Tomb Raider”. Another reason is that this temple is still very much immersed by the jungle, which makes it pretty special.

Ta Prohm translates to “Ancestor Brahma”, but it was originally called “Rajavihara”, which means “Royal monastery”. So, this temple used to be a monastery when it was built in the late 12th century.

We actually really liked Ta Prohm because of the way the jungle surrounds it. There is even a massive tree that has sprung out of the temple, which is very impressive! However, it will never be our favorite temple because of the big tourist crowds.

A tree in the middle of the temple in Ta Prohm

4. Ta Keo – The pyramid temple

We absolutely loved Ta Keo!

When we arrived at the temple, Chen told us to be careful.

Careful? Why? Are there snakes or something?

There were no snakes, instead we quickly learned that he meant not to slip and hit our heads on the massive steps that lead to the top of the temple. Honestly, the steps you have to climb to the top of Ta Keo are huge! But it’s all very adventurous.

Ta Keo actually means “Temple-mountain”, which makes totally sense. Because unlike the other temples we’d seen, Ta Keo was built like a small mountain.

The temple looks like a five-tier pyramid where each tier has a separate terrace. It’s very impressive, and if you ask me, it’s definitely one of the must-visit temples in Angkor.

Although, I must admit that walking up and down the steps of Ta Keo was a bit intimidating for me (I’m not super excited about heights), but it was really worth it. At the top of the pyramid, we found a small temple where some Buddhist monks where praying.

Ta Keo is a very authentic temple, plus excellent views are included.

Ta Keo temple steps

5. Bayon Temple – Hundreds of smiling faces

The Bayon Temple turned out to be our favorite temple in the small circuit around Angkor Wat.

We completely fell in love with the many small hallways in this temple, which felt like walking through some sort of maze. Plus, all the smiling faces that are carved into Bayon creates a unique atmosphere, which we didn’t feel in any of the other temples.

Apparently, there are more than 200 smiling faces cut out in the Bayon temple, which was built back in the late 12th century.

Even though we started to get a bit tired at this point of our trip, we were still completely taken aback by how much we loved this temple. Bayon definitely put a smile on our faces.

So you should really look forward to visiting Bayon on your trip around Angkor Wat’s small circuit.

6. Angkor Wat – The king of all temples

Now let’s get on with what we’ve all been waiting for – The king of all temples – Angkor Wat!

Angkor Wat is said to be the largest religious monument in the world, isn’t that just crazy? It’s also the temple that you see in the Cambodian flag. Angkor Wat is truly the landmark of Cambodia.

There is so much to be said about this big beautiful monument that we don’t even know where it would be right to begin or end. One thing is for sure, it’s a place that truly deserves to be on everyone’s bucket list.

The Khmer King, Suryavarman II, originally built Angkor Wat in the 12th century for the Hindu god Vishnu, who is the preserver and protecter of the universe. Then it gradually became a Buddhist place of worship, which it remains today.

There is so much history in this place, yet we wouldn’t know how to even begin explaining. We’re not historians so we cannot do Angkor Wat’s history justice on this travel blog. Instead we’ll just advise and encourage anyone who is visiting Angkor Wat to go read about it.

So here are some resources about Angkor Wat that you can start with:

  • General Facts
  • Architecture

We were so happy that Chen had made this incredible pearl the last stop of the day, and we cannot wait to visit Angkor Wat again in the future!

We hope you enjoyed this blog post about how to go on a tuk tuk tour around the small circuit of angkor Wat. It’s honestly one of our most memorable travel days and it’s a must-visit attraction in Southeast Asia.

Curiosity: Baksei Chamkrong Temple was constructed in the middle of the tenth century (947), possibly beginning by Harshavarman I and possibly completed by Rajendravarman II. It was dedicated to Siva (Hindu), and it is possible that it was a funerary temple for the king’s parents,  having to follow the transitory between Bakheng and Koh Ker.

The stairs leading up to the Central Sanctuary are in disrepair. Still, visitors can get a good look at the building’s design and decoration by walking around the temple (in a clockwise direction). Those determined to reach the Central Sanctuary should ascend through the stairs located in the northernmost part of the structure.

Angkor Tours by Tuk Tuk

Visiting angkor.

The Angkor Unesco World Heritage Centre, in Cambodia, is one of the most important archaeological, architectural and cultural sites in South East Asia.

Angkor was the centre of the Khmer Kingdom from the 9th to 15th century, and spans over 400 square kilometres. It is easily accessible from Siem Reap.

There are 72 major temples in the site, and it can be overwhelming to know where to start.

So let us help you plan your visit and get the most out of your experience.

Angkor Tours

There are two main circuits, the Small and the Grand Circuits. Each circuit can take a day to complete, and can be combined with sunrise and sunset to start and end your day with a truly magical experience.

The Small Circuit covers the central area and comprises the "must see" temples, (including Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm, Bayon). This is the one to do if you only have a day to spare.

The Grand Circuit covers the main temples outside of the central area, (including Preah Khan, Neak Pean, Ta Som, East Mebon and Pre Rup).

There are other temples worth visiting in Angkor, (Banteay Srei, Banteay SamRe, Roluos Group), and further afield (Beng Melea).

Taking a tuk tuk is the best way to travel around Angkor, and itineraries can be tailored to suit your available time and the sites you are most interested in.

Angkor Wat: Guide to the Grand Circuit Tour

Angkor Wat Grand Circuit Tour Route

The Angkor Archaeological Park is massive – 400 square kilometers to be exact. And figuring out what temples to visit, how to get there, and how to avoid the crowds and the heat can be a daunting task. We purchased the 7-day pass so that we could explore all of it in order to bring you a complete guide to the Grand Circuit Tour, as well as a few other things you should know before you visit.

After you finish reading this post, be sure to check out our Complete Guide to Angkor Wat and our post about the Small Circuit Tour. And, of course, you’ll want to read all about the best places to eat, sleep, and drink in the nearby town of Siem Reap!

Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links. If you make a purchase or booking through one of our links we may earn a small commission (don’t worry, it’s at no extra cost to you).

Angkor Wat: Grand Circuit Tour

Entrance prices and hours, angkor archaeological park entrance fees.

  • 1-day ticket – $37 USD
  • 3-day ticket (valid for 1 week) – $62 USD
  • 7-day ticket (valid for 1 month) – $72 USD

Angkor Archaeological Park Hours

  • Angkor Wat Temple and Srah Srang: 5 am – 5:30 pm (open for sunrise)
  • Phnom Bakheng and Pre Rup Temples: 5 am – 7 pm (open for sunrise and sunset)
  • All other temples: 7:30 am – 5:30 pm

Ticket Office

The ticket office is technically open from 5 am – 5:30 pm daily. However, ticket agents usually begin selling tickets at 4:30 am so you can arrive even earlier if you want to get a prime sunrise-viewing spot. Or better yet, purchase your ticket between 5 pm and 5:30 pm the evening before so you don’t have to worry about waiting in line!

Choosing a Tuk-Tuk Driver

Angkor Wat Grand (Big) Circuit Tour: Choosing a Tuk Tuk

There are tuk-tuk drivers all over Siem Reap, vying for the chance to be your tour guide of Angkor Wat. They are especially congregated around the entrances of Pub Street, the popular backpacker area.

If you want to take a run-of-the-mill-tour, you can simply choose any driver that seems nice, no matter their level of English. They will point to their handy laminated map to show you the two options and quote you a price.

If you want to deviate from the normal route or watch sunrise somewhere other than Angkor Wat, you’ll need to find a driver that speaks decent English. Which may cost up to $30 USD for a trip. You can always rent a motorbike or bicycle and explore on your own.

The Best Tuk-tuk Driver in Siem Reap

Best Tuk-tuk Driver in Siem Reap: Nakry Mean

After several trips to Siem Reap we have worked with quite a few local drivers and our favorite Siem Reap tuk-tuk driver is Nakry Mean who drives a batmobile-themed tuk-tuk. You can reach him on WhatsApp at  +855 17 761 110  or on his Facebook page,  Siem Reap Batmobile Tuk Tuk .

Book a Tour of Angkor Wat

If you’d prefer to prearrange a tour of the temples, check out Get Your Guide. They offer a full-day Grand Circuit photo tour that starts with sunrise. You’ll have a knowledgeable English-speaking guide and learn all about the history of the park and the temples that you visit.

Grand Circuit Tour Route

The Grand Circuit Tour route (also called “Big Circuit”) is generally done clockwise and includes the temples that are outside of the Small Circuit Tour . These are on the outskirts of the complex so it’s a bit more expensive as your tuk-tuk driver will use more petrol. Read more about those temples in our post about the Small Circuit Tour .

We chose to modify our Grand Circuit tour. We started with sunrise at Srah Srang, a small temple that sits on the banks of a big man-made lake. Then we added Ta Prohm to our list of temples that we would be visiting. And we did the tour in counterclockwise order.

The temples below are listed in order of how you would visit them if you started with sunrise at Angkor Wat and toured in clockwise order.

Angkor Wat Grand (Big) Circuit Tour: Preah Khan Temple

Preah Khan is definitely one of the highlights of the Grand Circuit Tour. The walkway leading up to Preah Khan temple is lined by statues that appear to play tug-of-war with a snake; they are actually depicting the churning of the ocean of milk. It is a grand entrance to a very grand temple.

As you walk through the central hallway through Preah Khan, it seems to go on and on forever. But soon enough it opens up and you’ll find little pockets of areas to explore here. The carvings are still in very good condition and much of the temple is just a free-for-all to explore. These carvings of women goddesses in dancing poses are known as Apsara.

Angkor Wat Grand (Big) Circuit Tour: Preah Khan Temple

It was one of my favorite temples in the complex because there seemed to be a surprise around every corner. It’s a good one to check out in the morning before you are sweaty and exhausted and can only think about air conditioning and a cold beer.

Opening Hours: 7:30am – 5:30pm

Angkor Wat Grand (Big) Circuit Tour: Neak Pean

You’ll walk along a long walkway to reach Neak Pean. There is a big lake and some swampy areas below. Vendors selling fruit, cold drinks, and souvenirs are lined up near the entrance. And a few men who have lost limbs from land mines will serenade you while you walk (a small tip is appreciated).

The Neak Pean temple sits in the middle of a large man-made body of water. So you can’t enter it or even get very close. But the view of the temple with its reflection on the still water is a beautiful sight. You probably won’t need more than 30 minutes here.

Opening Hours: 7:30 am – 5:30 pm

Angkor Wat Grand (Big) Circuit Tour: Ta Som Temple

The Ta Som temple complex contains some of the most vibrantly colored, intricate stonework in the Angkor Complex. Bright green and red coloring add an interesting contrast to the grey stone structures. And you can really see how much detail was put into carving these amazing temples.

Angkor Wat Grand (Big) Circuit Tour: Ta Som Temple

When you walk out of the back of Ta Som temple you’ll see several locals selling souvenirs here. Past them is an impressive gate with a large head standing watch from the top. Pass through the gate and look at it from the other side – it’s another example of the power of Mother Nature.

Angkor Wat Grand (Big) Circuit Tour: East Mebon Temple

The East Mebon temple is quite similar to the Pre Rup temple (below), only with less stairs and no view. As you enter this temple you’ll pass through a small gate. Many tourists like to stop here as it is an ideal spot to see the temple in all of its glory. But be aware that this causes a bit of a traffic jam.

It won’t take long to see this small temple complex, 20 minutes should be plenty. There are some very nice women across the road selling fruit shakes and ice coffee if you find yourself here in the heat of the day and need some respite.

Angkor Wat Grand (Big) Circuit Tour: Pre Rup

You’ll have to climb a set of very steep stairs to reach the top of the Pre Rup temple. The stairs are also very tall so it feels more like climbing a ladder. And with no handrails to speak of, this temple may be difficult for anyone with mobility issues or a fear of heights.

Angkor Wat Grand (Big) Circuit Tour: Pre Rup

Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with lovely views of the ruins below. There is one temple at the center, surrounded by four temples in the corners below, all in a similar pagoda style.

This temple is open early and stays open late so it’s a good option for sunrise and sunset if you are looking for an option other than the Angkor Wat temple.

Opening Hours: 5:00am – 7:00pm

Angkor Wat Grand (Big) Circuit Tour: Srah Srang (Srassrang)

Srah Srang is technically part of the Small Circuit tour route , but you’ll also pass it at the end of the Grand Circuit. And you can probably convince your driver to make one last stop. The large man-made lake is a nice place to sit and relax before heading back to Siem Reap .

Some people choose to do the Grand Circuit in reverse order to try and avoid crowds at the temples. If this is your strategy, Srah Srang is a great place to watch sunrise away from the crowds of Angkor Wat. You’ll sit on the small stone platform at the west end of the lake and watch the sunrise across the water.

Opening Hours: 5:00am – 5:30pm

Enjoy the Grand Circuit Tour of Angkor Wat!

  • Romofox 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles An ok experience I visited Cambodia after Vietnam, to which I had the best experience both with the country and tour company, so that immediately set a high standard. I did not like the country Cambodia as much, however I will try to keep that separate from my review of this company. I hope my review can be taken by the company to improve certain areas, and for travelers looking to book, don't let my review deter you from booking with this company. Upon leaving Vietnam, I had not received any contact or confirmation from About Cambodia Travel & Tours that they were expecting me at the Siem Reap airport. We had already arranged this, yes, but that was several months ago so it would have been nice to be assured that day that there was someone waiting for us at the airport. My group and I went hoping they didn't forget. Thankfully, someone did pick us up. This first tour guide and driver were great, they did their jobs wonderfully and made us feel as comfortable as possible despite the scorching heat. We stayed two nights in Siem Reap, and then headed to Phnom Penh, to which we got a new driver and tour guide. In Phnom Penh, by the fourth day in Cambodia, I had gotten Buddhism fatigue. It felt like all the attractions thus far was about Buddhism (Besides the killing fields), and it was starting to become too much. The tour guide was not my favorite, he was very quiet so I hardly heard anything and many times he would explain things to just one person in my group who was walking with him. It was impossible for all of us to walk by his side, but still then I don't think we would've been able to hear him. The third leg was going to Koh Rong island. I was displeased with the driver who took us from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville as he was constantly distracted, texting and talking on his phone, and eating his lunch as well all while driving. Luckily there weren't too many people on that highway as he often drove on both lanes. The reason why I book through companies like About Cambodia is because I have a hard time figuring out logistics. Going to Koh Rong, there is no tour guide with us so we had some difficulty. The speedboat company, as well as the reservation confirmation paper I was given by the last guide, did not clarify what pier we had to exit on. This is something that should be made very clear with bolded font or highlight, but It was not anywhere. Because I had previously looked at google maps, I had somewhat of an idea which pier to exit, but was uncertain. So when the pier came, I asked the workers of the speedboat, showing them my reservation as well as telling them what hotel was expecting us, and they told us it was the next pier. At the next pier, they had said it was actually the last pier, and that we had to get off then because they weren't going back. The two piers were far from each other, so we were stuck for a while until some guys with a boat offered to take us with for $15. We did not have a choice, so we paid. We (my small group of females) felt very vulnerable at this time, unsure of our safety. It was the first time the company contacted me via Whatsapp asking why I missed our exit at the last pier as the hotel employees were waiting for us. Luckily, the guys with the boat took to the beach close to our hotel, to which we had to jump in the ocean, get wet up from our waist and walk with our luggages in the sand to the hotel. We were beyond relieved to be safe, that we tipped the guys $15, so the whole excursion costed us $30. I let the company know about this, and as of now have not received a credit or refund, that would've been the right thing to do. The two nights on Koh Rong was ok. Going back to Phnom Penh, it got dark and I was uncertain if our driver was falling asleep. I had to start a conversation and keep talking to ensure he was awake and attentive. At the end of our time with all the guides or drivers, they all asked us to write a review on tripadvisor immediately, offering wifi hotspot so that we would get it done then and there. I did not do that as I was waiting for the end of the entire trip to write an overall review of the entire experience. Just be aware that reviews here may only represent one part of someone's experience rather than the entire tour. Had I done a review just after Siem Reap with the first guide, it would be 5 star. But my review after the entire tour, taking the good and the bad in consideration, it is a 3 star- average: not the worst experience, but also not the best. All the tour guides and drivers were very thankful for my business, and I appreciate knowing that. I hope they get compensated well. Cost break down just in case you are deciding between a tour company or traveling on your own (per person, car rides and hotels are divided amongst the # of people in my group): Day 1: Arrival, airport to siem reap hotel $12 Day 2: Angkor Wat $37 each Day 3: Drive to Phnom Penh $20/each according to google taxi cost (all break stops sights were free) Day 4: Cheung Elk $10, Toul Sleng Genocide Museum $5, Grand Palace $10, Wat Phnom $1 Day 5: Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville $20 each, Speedboat: $15 each Day 6: Free day Day 7: Speedboat $15 each Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh Airport $20 each Hotels for 6 nights: Approx $110 Total cost: $275, conservative estimate. 4 Tips For Visiting The Archaeological Wonder Of Angkor Wat

W hile not actually listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia, must surely be the eighth. Set across 402 acres of land, this sprawling temple complex holds the Guinness World Record as the largest religious structure in the world.

I had the chance a few years back to visit this giant wonder. I spent 4 days exploring all of the ruins. Here are my tips for getting the most out of your visit to Angkor Wat.

1. Hire A Tuk-Tuk Driver

Chances are you are staying at one of the many hotels or hostels in Siem Reap proper. This will mean that you need transportation to the actual temples. Enter one of hundreds of tuk-tuks usually lined up outside of the hotels and hostels.

These drivers don’t just provide you with transportation; they are actually a wealth of knowledge about everything you will be seeing. While they cannot enter the temples with you (this is reserved for registered tour guides only, which you will find inside the entrance), they can give you the low-down on each temple during the ride there so that you are prepared with valuable information upon entering.

For about $20–$25 a day (and I’m talking full days), you will get transportation from your hotel to the entrance of the ruins. The entrance fee is separate and costs $37 for a 1-day pass and $62 for a 3-day pass (valid for 1 week). The guide will also ride you around to all the different temple areas.

You will also get a personable and knowledgeable driver who will provide a cooler with cold water and towels. (You are also free to place whatever goodies you have in the cooler for lunch and such.) Trust me, you will be grateful for these basic but necessary perks after a few hours roaming outside in the hot sun of Cambodia. That’s not to mention the relief of the shade from the roof of the tuk-tuk on the ride between temples.

Pro Tips: If you would like a guide to be with you as you roam the grounds, plenty will be waiting for you at the entrance after you’ve paid your fee. These usually cost between $40 and $50. This is usually per group, not per person. Alternatively, you could opt to buy or download a guided tour on your phone to listen to as you explore the ruins. However, given the size of the grounds, this can get confusing and hard to follow after a while.

2. Consider How Many Days You Want To Spend Exploring

The number of days you decide to spend visiting the temples at Angkor Wat will surely depend on the amount of time you have in the country, so this will be an entirely personal decision. Most people seem to recommend at least 3 days and I would too. I would actually recommend 4 days, if you can, to ensure you see all of the top sites.

However, if you only have 1 day to visit, your tuk-tuk driver will likely tour you around what is known as the “small loop” or “small circuit.” This route will take you to the three major highlights of the grounds — Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and Ta Prohm. They are highlights for good reason as they are truly spectacular and will give you a sense of the wonder.

If you have longer than 1 day, your driver will likely take you on the grand circuit. This includes the three temples on the small circuit as well as many of the smaller temples outside the central cluster. With 3 days, you will also have time to do a sunset or sunrise visit, or both.

3. Sunset And Sunrise At The Temples

One of the biggest advantages of spending more than 1 day at the site is that you can include a day in which you get to see either the sunrise or sunset at the temples. This is a very popular thing to do, so be aware that you will definitely not be the only one there.

If you want great pictures, plan to be there well ahead of time to stake your spot. Then be prepared for latecomers to budge their way in; such is the way of tourists these days.

If you hope to go for sunrise, the park entrance opens at 5 a.m. This means, depending on the location of your hotel, you will want to leave at about 4:45 a.m. Your tuk-tuk driver will be able to help you determine this.

The best spot to view the sunrise is at the reflection pool located right in front of the main temple. This reflection allows for some spectacular pictures of the Sun rising in the water with the temple in the background. Be sure to walk around and get pictures from several angles.

If you’re hoping to go for a sunset, the most popular spot to do this is at the temple of Phnom Bakheng. This temple is located on top of a hill allowing for a spectacular view. Be sure to check times of sunrise and sunset to ensure you are there with plenty of time to catch either.

4. The Dinosaur

Maybe you’ve heard of it, or maybe, like me, you hadn’t. On my travels, I overheard someone else’s guide talking about it and then wandered around to find it. Either way, now you know.

If you’d like to see this dinosaur — a stegosaurus to be precise — you will need to visit the temple of Ta Prohm. This temple was made famous when the movie Tomb Raider hit theaters. Parts of the adventure movie are filmed in it. And while this may be the reason many tourists visit this temple, do not forget to also look for the tiny dinosaur carved into a temple wall.

The carving is located in a corner of the courtyard. You must look to the left of the central exit. Once you find it, create your own theories as to how a dinosaur was carved into a temple nearly 900 years old.

Regardless of how many days you have to spend in the awe-inspiring archaeological site of Angkor Wat, you are sure to enjoy your time if you keep these tips in mind. As well, be sure to wear good walking shoes; light clothes that cover your arms, shoulders, and knees; perhaps a hat; sunglasses; and sunscreen. Enjoy it and take all the pictures you can!
