ABOUT ROVANIEMI
Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland and the official hometown of Santa Claus. Located in the southern part of Lapland, it is easily accessible by train, bus or plane from Helsinki. Every year, millions of tourists visit Rovaniemi to enjoy its beautiful Winter landscape, experience its Christmas atmosphere and meet its most famous resident, Santa Claus!
Because Rovaniemi is a popular destination, you may need to book long in advance your accommodations and activities (especially in December). Also, you will easily find many tour operators to organise a guided safari but we recommend to carefully select the tour operator as you may easily end up in big coaches with hundreds of tourists…
Overall, Rovaniemi is a great location to start a long trip around Lapland (this is why most of our trips depart from there). If your time is limited, this is also a good destination where you will find a lot of activity options to experience Lapland.

Your trip will start with a short transfer from Rovaniemi airport and you’ll have time to settle in and explore your surroundings, sample the Lappish hospitality and try the delicious cuisine before settling in to your suite and watching the enormous star filled sky at night.
Your next day will be filled with excitement as you can take a walk in the snow to Santa’s village ( around 2 km) with its magical Christmas atmosphere, then meeting the gorgeous huskies and taking a safari through the crisp snowy landscape.
On the following day you will have chance to meet a Lappish Reindeer herd and take a sleigh ride, dashing through the snow with the reindeer ahead.
Finally, you’ll take an exhilarating snowmobile adventure that gets you off the beaten track, for a true Lapland adventure .
A magical winter wonderland adventure for all the family!
*Based on two people travelling in April.
A full example itinerary is detailed below, activity timings can differ slightly, your own personal schedule will be given to you upon check in.
Welcome to Rovaniemi!
When you touch down at Rovaniemi airport, we’ll be waiting there to transfer you directly to the incredible Arctic Treehouse Hotel. Drive through the ethereal pine forest, and arrive at your very own treehouse suite, nestled within the still, white trees.
Take some time to settle in, unpack or explore, then you can enjoy a delicious dinner in the Rakkas restaurant or one of the other local eateries.
After dinner, the evening is yours to enjoy. You can choose to relax in front of a roaring log fire or you could book a trip to see the Northern Lights
Then head back to your warm treehouse suite for a night of lying under the ink-black sky, gazing through the clear window to catch a glimpse of the incredible Northern Lights.
Visit Santa Claus and Husky Safari
Today you will have the morning free so this is your chance to visit the man himself, Santa Claus! Take the short walk from your hotel to Spend time in Santa’s Village and enjoy the magical Christmas atmosphere. Spend as much time as you wish walking around and enjoying all that his village has to offer, you can see Santa’s post office where all the letters from children all over the world are sent, sorted and delivered, the elves workshop, independent shops with Christmas souvenirs, Lappish crafts and of course Santa’s office, where you can go along and meet Santa Claus.
In the afternoon you’ll be collected to enjoy your time in this winter wonderland with a safari led by your own dog team. When you arrive at the farm you will be amazed how excited the dogs are to start their run through the beautiful landscape, and as you set off through the forest it is an unforgettable experience.
You’ll be able to drive your own team of dogs as you ride the sled as the ”musher” and have time to spend with the dogs after your exhilarating ride. They love the attention and are more than happy to have a tummy rub and photos!
Reindeer Farm Visit
After a buffet breakfast at your accommodation you have time to relax or to enjoy the snow outside with taboggans or snow shoes.
In the afternoon you will visit a local reindeer farm to meet the famous gentle Lappish creatures up close and explore the Taiga forest by sleigh on your reindeer safari (around 3 hours). Once you arrive with your guide to the farm, you will be invited to take your seat in the reindeer sleigh. The sleigh is suitable for adults and children to sit together and as you glide through the snowy forest and white scenery, you may spot some other arctic animals, or at least see their tracks in the snow.
When you come back from the safari, which is around 2.5 kms, a warm cup of coffee or tea and traditional snacks will wait for you on the farm. The herder will explain all about their lifestyle and the tradition of reindeer husbandry in Lapland. This is the best time to ask questions and feed your curiosity! Before leaving and heading back to Rovaniemi, you may ask your guide to spend a bit more time in the farm if you would like to.
Snowmobile Safari
Today, you’ll head right out into the Lapland wilderness, on a thrilling snowmobile ride that crosses wide open fells, quiet forests and rolling, snow-covered hills joining in on a Snowmobile safari through remote inland forests and lakes. On this 1-hour driving snowmobile safari you will enjoy some amazing scenery.
Your expert guide will provide all the instructions you need before you set off through an unforgettable trail in the Arctic Circle area. You will be driving in pairs, one driver and one passenger on each snowmobile, with opportunity to switch places during the trip. Due to the dramatic topography, a reduced speed is held during parts of the tour. You will love the thrilling excitement of snowmobiling through snowy forests and beautiful nature of the Arctic Circle.
Our group sizes are small and the speed and the length of the safari will depend on each group, so the safari is suitable for families as well as for those who are looking for a real adrenaline boost. The one-hour safari is great for families and non-experienced drivers. The snowmobile trail will take you to the most beautiful places in the arctic circle area.
Today, wake up for one more breakfast in the Lappish wilderness, before you check out and are transferred back to Rovaniemi airport.
You’ve had an incredible stay in Lapland, and have created memories that will last a lifetime with your family!

ARCTIC NATURE TRIPS (Rovaniemi) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go
Arctic Road Trips
one night Aurora hunting
Go along with arctic nature, one night aurora hunting from rovaniemi, one night aurora expedition how it works:.
Our Aurora Tour starts from Rovaniemi and we go as far as needed to have a good chance to see Auroras. We do not have a kilometer or time limit . This can naturally be as far as 800 kilometers both ways, but usually we drive drive around 200. Northern Lights can only be seen if you have at least particularly clear sky and an okay solar activity. That is why our Aurora Hunts only happen if we think that there is a good chance to see the Northern Lights. In case the conditions are too bad, we cancel the Northern Lights Tour or postpone it to another day, to not waste anyones time.
Like this we have a high success rate. We would say that if the Aurora Hunt happens, we can give you a possibility of 95 % that you see the Northern Lights.
How long does the Aurora Hunt take?
The time of our Aurora Hunt varies according to the distance that we have to drive to get to clear sky and how long we have to wait fo the Northern Lights. Sometimes this might be only half hour, sometimes up to 4 hours. That’s why the duration of the Tour varies between 5 and 14 hours . Also, the starting time of the Aurora Tour varies depending on the season, weather and solar activity.
On our Aurora Tour we are doing pure Aurora hunting, that means there is no food or drinks included. But you are welcome to take your own snacks and drinks to the tour because it might be a long time that we stay outside. 🙂 We are not focusing on BBQ or fire because it is disturbing the Aurora Hunt.
Please note that we take kids only from age of 10 and older on the tour.
