5 Day Singapore Itinerary For Families

Our awesome 5 day Singapore itinerary with kids gives a great introduction to this attraction-packed city-state located at the equator!  With a fascinating cultural diversity, gorgeous public art and super creative and different places to see (think the Jewel Terminal at Changi Airport) Singapore is a great place to spend time with your family.

If you are new to traveling with kids then Singapore is a great place to try as a first-time family destination.  There is so much to do and see, and it is easy to get around.   You can even have a very enjoyable 48 hours in Singapore if you are using it as a short stopover. If you don’t have enough time for Singapore in 5 days this can be adapted to a Singapore itinerary 4 days very easily, please see our suggestions on how to do this at the end of the post.

What You Need To Know About This 5 Day Singapore Itinerary

Traveling with 3 children under 10 years of age we plan ‘achievable’ days and don’t try to do too much.  Honestly, what to see in Singapore in 5 days will depend on you and your family.

Our days were designed to start early and then rest during the heat of the day.  Contrary to our usual travels with children, we then would do another activity in the afternoon and early evening.   This was specially designed to get the most out of our  Singapore itinerary without spending too much time in the heat. Without a doubt we think that Singapore is one of the Best Family Holiday Destinations in Asia – its easy to get around, there is plenty to keep the kids entertained, and there is not too much culture shock.

Without a doubt, there are many places to visit in Singapore in 5 days but we are not going to provide a comprehensive list of them (there are lots of other blogs that do that).  Instead, we are going to just tell you what we did and why it was an awesome way to spend 5 days in Singapore.

PRO TIP – Singapore with kids 

In order to travel successfully with kids – allow them time to play!  This 5 day Singapore itinerary does let them explore and play at their own pace.  If you wanted to go slower and not have quite so many consecutive night outings then we would highly recommend adding an extra day and making this into a 6 day Singapore itinerary.

Day 1:  Gardens by the Bay Domes + Arab Street, Singapore

Today head to the Gardens by the Bay Domes and explore both the Flower Dome and the Cloud forest Dome.  As these are temperature controlled at a pleasant 23-25 degrees Celsius you don’t feel the heat of the day.  Our kids loved playing in the Flower Dome while we sat on a bench.  We then headed back to our recommended hotel, the Village Hotel Bugis which was conveniently located right next to Arab Street.  We rested in the room before heading out in the afternoon to explore Arab Street, Haji Lane (and it’s amazing murals) and the Kampong Glam area.  This area has some delicious restaurants where you can eat Turkish or Lebanese food.  For current rates and information for the Village Hotel Bugis check here.

Day 2: Gardens by the Bay Supertrees + Little India, Singapore

We left the hotel by 7.30 am in a taxi to visit some of the outside Gardens at Gardens by the Bay and were in the Super Trees ticket line before it opened at 9 am.   There were few people on the Supertrees Walkway but the sun was still beating down!  From here we went to the Gardens by the Bay Water Park – which is completely free.  We all loved getting wet and cool for a couple of hours as well as exploring the nearby Far East Organisation Children’s Playground.  Then we went back for more water play!  We took a taxi back to the hotel for a rest before heading to Little India for a typical dinner in a Hawkers Market.

Day 3: Marina Bay Sands + Art Science Museum

Now 2 days into our 5 day Singapore itinerary we were beginning to feel the heat and everyone was tired.  The benefit of visiting the Marina Bay Sands and Art Science Museum was that it was entirely air-conditioned.  We spent an active and fun day but didn’t have the ‘heat zapping’ experience of other days in Singapore.

For more details on how to get the best of the Marina Bay Sands and Art Science please visit Singapore with Kids .  After returning to our hotel the Village Hotel Bugis by MRT we rested for a while before taking a taxi to the Singapore Zoo Night Safari to see nocturnal animals!

The first entry for the Zoo Night Safari is at 7.15 pm which means that it will be finished within the hour.  For us, it was a 30-minute drive back to our hotel in a taxi.  Keep in mind there are lots of mosquitos at the Singapore Zoo Night Safari and be sure to wear long sleeves and pants as well as using lots of insect repellent.

Day 4: Boat Tour On The Singapore River And China Town

A water taxi (known locally as a bumboat) is a fun and economical way to see some of the major sights of Singapore.  We increased the number of places to visit in Singapore in 5 days significantly by traveling by water.

Singapore water taxis cover 5 stops and costs just $5 SGD per person (or $3.50 US).  We took a water taxi from the Marina Bay Sands up to Clarke Quay, going past the Merlion and back again to Marina Bay Sands or potentially using a water taxi from point A to point B.  This cost us $20 -$40 Singapore dollars, which would’ve been far more cost-efficient than taking a sightseeing tour.

However, when traveling with kids sometimes a tour is less stressful.  here are two types of sightseeing tours to see the river.  One is a hop on – hop off Duck tour, which is a land and sea tour, and the kids thought they were pretty cool because they saw them driving the streets of Singapore (cost about $170 SGD for our family)

There is also a typical Singapore River experience, titled the “Tale Of 2 Quays” which I did on a visit to Singapore pre-kids and found interesting.  At an adult ticket: S$25, and child ticket S$15 (12 years and below), the cost would have been $80 SGD for the family with a duration of 40 minutes.  One of my favorite things about that Singapore River tour was that it got us up close to the Merlion which was very memorable.

After doing the river tour hopefully, you are not too exhausted.  Pop on the MRT for a convenient couple of stops to Singapore’s China Town.   Our kids loved shopping in Chinatown!  The parents enjoyed the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and the Chinatown Heritage Centre.

When traveling with kids you always need to assess how tired everyone is.  This 5 Day Singapore itinerary certainly keeps you moving.   Again, going back to our centrally located hotel, the Village Hotel Bugis, meant that we were able to have a rest and recharge before heading out for the evening.

Marina Bay Sands Light Show

Gardens by the Bay Garden Rhapsody Light Show

We attended the early session of the Gardens by the Bay Light show and absolutely loved it.  Apparently, you can do the early session of the Marina Bay Sands Light Show.  Then the later session of the Garden Rhapsody but when traveling with kids there is only so much you can do.  We chose just to do the one.

Day 5: Your Last Day In Singapore: Flexible And Changi Airport Playground

With 5 days in Singapore, we feel that you have had time to discover the amazing cultural diversity of this island state.  We’ve left day 5 fairly flexible because it does depend on your flight time and you need to consider the kids were out late the night before.  If you are leaving Singapore later in the day, we’d take the kids to the Jacob Ballas Gardens at the Singapore Botanic Gardens (closed Tuesdays).  Let them run off some steam and have a really good play.

Don’t Forget The Changi Airport Playground

Remember the Changi Airport’s Jewel terminal is a destination in its own right.  The top level of the Jewel Terminal is a giant playground.  We always allow 3 hours prior to any international flight.  So, in the case of Singapore, we’d recommend getting to the airport 5 hours before your flight so that you can enjoy this amazing playground.  We’ve provided lots of tips to get the best of the Changi Airport playground in our post What To Do In Singapore With Kids .   Without a doubt, Changi Airport kid’s activities are hard to beat!

Looking For A Singapore Itinerary For 4 Days

If you have just 4 days in Singapore with your family, then we would recommend limiting your activities to the very best of Singapore!

Day 1 Gardens by the Bay

Visit the Supertrees first!  Followed by the Garden Domes in the middle of the day when the heat makes being outside impossible.  Let the kids run off some steam at the water playground.  Then, later in the afternoon, when it is cooler, let them play in the playground.

If you are still feeling enthusiastic, stick around for the Gardens by the Bay Garden Rhapsody Light Show.

Day 2 Chinatown then Marina Bay Sands & Art Science Museum

Today will be easier on the kids with the heat.  Firstly, we’d allow them a bit of a sleep in before heading out to Chinatown.  There you can eat an early delicious lunch on the Chinatown Food Stree before heading over to the Marina Bay Sands.

You can literally spend hours in the Art Science Museum at the Marina Bay Sands.  Being that it is air-conditioned and interactive you will find that the time just flies by.  Happy entertained kids make this an awesome excursion for everyone.

You can choose to get an awesome view of the city from the Marina Bay Sands.  Go up on the observation deck OR go on the Singapore eye if you would prefer.  Both cost around $25 SGD per person.

Day 3: Singapore Boat Tour, Little India, Then Arab Street And Kampong Glam

Today take a boat tour around Singapore’s rivers.  See our Singapore in 5 days itinerary above before heading out to experience some of Singapore’s cultural diversity.  First of all, visit Little India for an extraordinary glimpse into India in Singapore.  From here Kampong Glam is very close.  You can be wowed by the murals which grace the walls of the neighborhood.  Do some shopping in trendy Haji Lane or Arab Street.  Then, finish off the day with a delicious Turkish or Lebanese meal.

Even though your Singapore itinerary 4 days means you have to pick the highlights of this city, we’ve ensured you get to see the best.

Day 4:  Your Last Day In Singapore: Flexible And Changi Airport Playground

Today we would leave flexible depending on your flight time.  What we do have to say is that Changi Airport playground is a must-visit place for families traveling to Singapore.  Definitely allow a couple of hours to explore the Jewel Terminal completely.

Singapore Malaysia Itinerary With Kids

Are you looking for an itinerary for Singapore – Malaysia?  We can help you out!  On day 6 of our Singapore itinerary, we were picked up in private vehicles and transferred over the Singapore Malaysia border.  We arrived in the neighboring town of Johor Bahru, which happens to be the home of Legoland Malaysia.  It was really easy to do.

Our Planned Itinerary: Singapore Malaysia

• A visit to Sentosa Island
• A stay on one of the Malaysian Islands like Pulau Sibu or Rawa Island.  Our full round-up of the best islands to visit from Singapore is found here .
• From the Port in Mersing to Malacca is about 3.5 hours where we would spend a couple of days.
• From there it is another 3 hours’ drive to the Genting Highlands.  Here we would love to spend a few more days before swinging back to Kuala Lumpur to end our itinerary.

With its blend of old and new, colonial and contemporary, Singapore is a true wonder of Southeast Asia. Gleaming skyscrapers, luxury hotels, Instagrammable parks and boulevards filled with air-conditioned malls – Singapore truly has it all. Oh, and there are  loads  of attractions and great things to do to keep the hordes of visitors occupied too. It can be hard to know where to start. There's nature in abundance, and endless ways to seek out amazing views. There's galleries and shops galore too, for the less adventurous. So here's a run-down of the best Singapore attractions, as selected by our local experts just for you.

1.  new bahru.

New Bahru is Singapore's biggest lifestyle opening in 2024. Masterminded by The Lo & Behold Group, this new lifestyle and creative cluster will be home to at least 40 homegrown brands across dining, retail, and wellness when it fully opens in September this year. Housed in former Nan Chiau High School, classrooms and canteens are now the site of some of the most exciting local brands: Sojao, Soilboy, Curious Creatures, Kotuwa , The Coconut Club, Huevos, and more. Over the next couple of months, look forward to the likes of Beyond the Vines, PPP Coffee, OM, and concepts by Keirin Buck and Mirko Febbrile. Need more time to explore? There's even a serviced apartment called Alma House that you can clock into to stretch your Ner Bahru adventure over a couple of days. 

2.  Jewel Changi Airport

If you've just got off the plane, don't have to leave the airport just yet! Instead, entertain yourself at Jewel Changi Airport. This majestic dome is home to over 280 dining and retail outlets, with some open around the clock – think dining at ungodly hours at American fast-food chain A&W or food court Five Spice, or killing a couple of hours with a movie at 24-hour Shaw Theatres. You can also catch the hourly light and sound show at the HSBC Rain Vortex, the mall’s 40m-tall indoor waterfall, from 7.30pm to midnight. Honestly, this place is ridiculous. Arguably worth the flight just to see this. Not a sad pasty shop in sight. There's even play attractions for the little ones – including trampolines! Hell, you could even add a day onto the stay and use the on-site hotel. Sure makes checking in a little sweeter. 

3.  Singapore Zoo

With 26 awe-inspiring hectares to explore, it's unlikely that you'll be able to cover Singapore Zoo in its entirety in a day. But give it a good go. Unlike traditional zoos, which keep its animals in cages, this place was the first in the world to implement the 'open concept', which has animals in individually landscaped enclosures. There are more than 4,200 animals to see across 12 zones, including Wild Africa, Primate Kingdom and Frozen Tundra. There's over 300 species, so honestly, all sorts of things you'll never see anywhere else. Visit the world's largest captive colony of orangutans, feed the friendly Asian elephants and see the rare white tiger. You can also feed giraffes, if you're tall enough. It's a zoo done properly. 

4.  Gardens by the Bay

The stuff of nature-lovers’ dreams, Gardens by the Bay is a truly magnificent site. The 250-acre green haven is filled with huge, flora-wreathed towers connected by ‘skyways’ and two enormous conservatories. Opened in 2012 as part of a drive to bring more greenery into Singapore, the gardens are free for guests to explore but you'll need an admission ticket for access to the flower domes that house rotating floral exhibitions. Needless to say, this is a non-negotiable must-see. There's also membership passes so you can visit its key attractions again and again. You'll want to, as it's absolutely massive. And beautiful. 

5.  Bird Paradise

A sad goodbye to Jurong Bird Park and an enthusiastic hello to Bird Paradise. This new 17-hectare park has eight stunning, walk-through aviaries modelled after the different biomes of the world. Think African rainforests, South African wetlands, and Australian dry eucalypt forests. This is where you can walk among free-flying birds, including some of the world's most threatened species and one of the largest populations of Hornbills under human care. 

The new park comes with refreshed programmes too. Visitors are in for a treat at new avian shows like Predators on Wings and Wings of the World, as well as behind-the-scenes tours at the Avian Healthcare and Research Centre and the Avian Breeding and Research Centre (with more to come). Otherwise, get up close with bird friends at special feeding sessions; the $8 fee will go to conservation programmes across the region that are supported by Mandai Wildlife Group. 

6.  Singapore Botanic Gardens

The Singapore Botanic Gardens is a jewel among the many beautiful parks and gardens in Singapore. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features attractions like  a swan lake where visitors can feed the black Australian swans and  the Evolution Garden Walk, a well-landscaped plot containing the fossilised remains of ancient trees. It's also home to the world's largest collection of orchids – some 1,000 species and 2,000 hybrids, plus the national flower, Vanda Miss Joaquim – at the National Orchid Garden.  During weekends, tours to its rainforest patch are available, while outdoor concerts are often held at Symphony Lake. And with the Jacob Ballas Children's Garden, where children can run wild and explore the  farm, orchard, and forest which has its own stream and ponds, this nature spot is family-friendly.  

7.  Night Safari

Set in lush secondary rainforest, the Night Safari is a must-see for visitors. The world’s first night zoo (opened in 1994) allows you to witness what 900 nocturnal animals from close to 100 species get up to after dusk, in naturalistic habitats and without barriers, via the use of special lighting techniques. Lions? Check. Rhinos? Check. Leopards? Check. Flying squirrels? Check! There's animals from seven geographical regions, and you get to see the lot without much work (you'll ride a tram all the way through). 

8.  Pulau Ubin

Take a walk on the wild side as you step foot on one of Singapore’s most popular off-shore islands. A sprawling 1,020 hectares, Ubin boasts lush greenery and abundant wildlife, drawing nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts to explore the many wonders of the granite island. There are plenty of activities to get up to here: go birdwatching at Pekan Quarry, wander through nature trails, and hike 75 metres up Puaka Hill for a breathtaking panoramic view of the islet. The sea-and-mangrove route will be a breeze for moderate kayakers (it's a word) and will be an accessible challenge for beginners. So go on, enjoy the chill vibes on this throwback offshore island. 

9.  MacRitchie Reservoir

• Central Water Catchment

Singapore’s oldest nature park is continuously filled with joggers, families and weekend strollers. You can get into the reservoir’s rainforest via the MacRitchie Trail, which offers straightforward boardwalk treks and more ambitious, longer hikes. There’s plenty of wildlife here, from flying lemurs to tree frogs and pangolins – but they do tend to hide out of sight. The one exception are the long-tailed macaque monkeys that hang about. Be warned, though: having been fed by less responsible visitors, they can be aggressive little terrors. Don't feed them, or wave about snacks. They're cute when behaving though, so do come along to the big green lung right at the heart of Central Catchment Nature Reserve. It's one of the most significant, untouched, bits of land on the entire island. 

10.  Haw Par Villa

Opened in 1937, this weird and wonderful park was named after its owners, Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par, the brothers who made their fortune from the acclaimed cure-all ointment Tiger Balm. Multicoloured statues and tableaux – some looking rather neglected – depict scenes from Chinese mythology. The highlight is the Ten Courts of Hell (responsible for childhood nightmares for generations of Singaporeans) where dioramas showing human sinners being punished in a variety of hideous and bloodthirsty ways – in extremely gory and graphic detail. It’s a safe bet that you will never see anything like it anywhere else. There is the infamous 10 Courts of Hell to navigate, but don't worry, it's not too scary. You can go in groups of up to 25 if you believe the whole 'strength in numbers' thing. 

11.  National Gallery Singapore

The former City Hall and Supreme Court buildings have been refurbished to become Singapore’s National Gallery. It is the largest visual art gallery in the city-state and is mostly dedicated to local and Southeast Asian art from the 19th century to the present day. So all the pretty modern and contemporary stuff then. Many of the works on display are drawn from the permanent National Collection but there’s also a rolling programme of temporary exhibitions to check out. So, there's always something new to see, even if you've been before. 

12.  Esplanade Theatres on the Bay

Few buildings have created such a stir in Singapore as the Esplanade. Opened in 2002, the eye-catching bayfront complex has been dubbed ‘the durians’ by locals because of its resemblance to the spiky (and stinky) tropical fruit. It’s the city’s most prominent performing arts centre and the programme bears an eclectic mix of Western and Eastern influences. Book a gig, concert or theatre show in advance and make a cultural evening of it. There's usually around 3,500 events at this venue every year, so you'll find something you like. There's also a lovely park nearby for those of you who enjoy a post-production stroll. 

13.  Universal Studios Singapore

This outpost of Universal Studios' theme park empire on Sentosa Island has an array of world-class rides across its various regions. There's Transformers: The Ride (a 3D adventure where you have to protect the Allspark), Battlestar Galactica (twin roller coasters that are sure to get your heart racing), Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure (everyone's favourite water ride), Enchanted Airways, Canopy Flyer and Revenge of the Mummy. Your kids will obviously never forgive you if you don’t let them run amok here. There's fun for all the family here though, whether you like thrill-seeking rides or chilling with the cast from Madagascar, it's all going on. 

14.  River Wonders

Another animal exploration! This time it's the watery (and other) ones. Manatees, crocodiles, flamingos and monkeys are just some of beasties (numbering over 11,000 specimens!) you’ll encounter in this river-themed wildlife park, which boasts the world’s biggest freshwater aquarium and a panda exhibit housing the cuddly couple Kai Kai and Jia Jia. So good they named them twice, twice. The River Safari is split into two zones: the Rivers of the World, which showcases animals from eight rivers including the Congo and Yangtze, and Wild Amazonia, where you can come face-to-face with over 30 animals from the rainforest on a boat ride aptly named Amazon River Quest. You can also see ancient-looking creatures, from a time long before we all started visiting zoos and stuff. 

15.  Chijmes

Once a convent school, CHIJMES has transformed into a hip lifestyle enclave brimming with bars, restaurants and cafés. It’s currently undergoing a revamp – and it’s more than just a cosmetic update. A fleet of new F&B joints are flocking to the old school, including El Mero Mero and Prive. Whether you want to just chill on the lawn, get your yoga on, or just eat and drink basically everything you've ever eaten, you can do it here. An essential stop while you're in Singapore really. Especially if you want to just be in a place doing stuff. 

16.  Marina Bay Sands

The 2,500 rooms at this hotel offer views of the South China Sea or Marina Bay and the Singapore skyline, but let’s be honest: the Moshe Safdie-designed SkyPark is the real crowd-puller, sitting atop the three hotel towers 200 metres above ground level (that's high up, that is). Non-hotel guests have to pay for the privilege of enjoying unfettered views from the Observation Deck across the city – but it’s definitely worth it to take that selfie to make all your friends seethe with envy, if nothing else. We're talking proper panoramic views, from the Gardens by the Bay to the Supertree Grove sculptures, and of course that skyline. You can see the lot from up here. Well worth catching at various times of day. 

17.  Changi Airport

An airport doesn’t sound like much of an attraction – more a series of interminable queues filled with tetchy flyers and shrieking babies. But Singapore’s Changi Airport is consistently voted the top airport in the world – and there’s much to marvel at here. Butterfly habitats, Balinese-style rooftop pools, 24-hour cinemas, spa centres, and the highly-raved Jewel Changi Airport – trust us, this ain’t your average airport. There are far worse stopovers during a long-haul flight. I mean, you read about Jewel Changi Airport, didn't you? This is the airports-are-a-great-place epicenter of the world. A lot of the long-haul flights go out of here too. You can just rock up very early, get a massage, have a little swim, the obligatory pre-flight drink at any ridiculous hour, and then you're jetting off. Stress free. Alternatively, when you turn up to the airport just forget the hotel for a few extra hours and chill. It's a holiday no? 

18.  Orchard Road

Once home to an orchard of fruit trees, this area of Singapore is now widely known as the shopping district. Stretching out over two kilometres in the centre of the city, Orchard Road is home to numerous coffeeshops, beauty salons, art galleries, hotels, designer and discount outlets, restaurants and nightclubs. Come armed with cash, and plenty of it. This is a 1.6 mile road full of amazing places to part-take in the old retail therapy. Whether you're looking for fantastic dining, beautiful shops (such as The Grande Whisky Collection, which has a nice 4,500 of the oldest whiskies in the world), and more. There's also some decent hotels, like the Four Seasons. 

19.  Singapore Flyer

Marina Bay’s giant, 42-storey, 165m observation wheel continues to pull a mix of tourists and locals who come for the breathtaking, 360-degree views of the city available from one of its capsules. Each flight lasts 30 mintues and on a clear day the panorama from the top of the wheel stretches into neighbouring Malaysia and Indonesia. If you fancy pimping your experience a bit, take a look at the dining and cocktail packages that are available. If you'd like to soak up some sweet sweet knowledge also, you're in luck – these 30 minute adventures come with an in-capsule audio guide and interactive screens designed to help you discover the past, present, and future of Sinapore. 

20.  National Museum of Singapore

After an $118 million refurb and rebranding job, the Singapore History Museum reopened as the National Museum of Singapore: the largest museum on the island. There are two main galleries: the Singapore History Gallery, which traces the history of Singapore from its beginnings in the fourteenth century to the present day and the Singapore Living Galleries, which focus on four lifestyle themes – food, fashion, film and photography.  That's over 700 years of Singapore to get stuck into, and over 1700 artefacts.  It’s worth a visit just for the building, an imposing neoclassical structure, complemented by modern glass additions.

Well, it’s challenging to find a better zoo in Southeast Asia than Singapore Zoo . This is one of the top attractions in the city and for good reason! Over the years Singapore Zoo has won many travel-related awards. Aside from seeing hundreds of cool animals, Singapore Zoo also has multiple activities for children such as:

2. universal studios singapore.

Sentosa Island is world-famous because it is loaded with world-class attractions. It is very popular with families living and visiting Singapore. One of the best family attractions in Singapore is ideally located on Sentosa Island – Universal Studios .

Universal Studios is situated within the Resorts World Complex on Sentosa Island. It is a large amusement that features tons of exciting rides and that are themed according to popular movies such as Jurassic Park and TRANSFORMERS. This is where your kids can get the opportunity to meet the real-life version of their favourite movie characters.

Plan on visiting Universal Studios for a whole day if possible. This will ensure that you get the best experience for the money.

3. adventure cove waterpark .

If you are looking for fun in the sun in Singapore then there’s no better place to go than at Adventure Cove Waterpark .

You can experience thrilling water slides and close encounters with marine life at Adventure Cove. This is also located on Sentosa Island and minutes away from Universal Studios Singapore.  Unlike average water parks, Adventure Cove allows you to snorkel with over 20,000 fish over a reef. 

It is the ‘up close and personal’ experience with marine life that makes Adventure Cove Waterpark one of the best family attracti ons in Singapore. You can get close to sharks and manta rays and then enjoy a tasty lunch at The Bay Restaurant . This features Japanese fusion dishes.

4. sentosa’s beaches: siloso, palawan, tanjong..

Grab your swim shorts, sunscreen and a frisbee and head to Sentosa’s beaches with your children. 

Sentosa Island has 3 main beaches that are quite popular with locals and visitors to the city:

Siloso Beach

Palawan Beach 

Tanjong Beach 

Each beach has its own distinct personality that you should know about.

Palawan Beach is located between Siloso and Tanjong. It is a popular choice with families because of two popular ‘family-oriented’ attractions located along the northern tip of the Beach: Port of Lost Wonder and Animal and Bird Encounters . 

Port of Lost Wonder (POLW) is situated alongside Palawan Beach.  You should check it out if you have small children. It consists of water slides, fountains and tons of pools. You will also find food vendors in case you want to have a snack with your family. It’s free to access Palawan Beach but you do have to pay to use the facilities at Port of Lost Wonders.

Siloso and Tanjong are also nice strips of sand. You can play beach volleyball on these beaches. Tanjong tends to be the quietest of the three because it is the farthest from Beach Station.

Singapore Night Safari is without question one of the best family attractions in Singapore. It is a ‘must-see’ if you are travelling with kids. Not surprisingly, it is a 13-time winner of the ‘Best Attraction Award’ according to the Singapore Tourism Board.The Night Safari attracts approximately 1.3 million visitors every year and features 900 animals from 100 different species. 

Not only is this a great place for excitement, but it’s also a great place to learn about threatened species and the importance of sustainability. Since it opened its doors Singapore Night Safari has all kinds of species including:

Other family attractions in Singapore worth visiting

AJ Hackett Sentosa is the place to go ‘bungy jumping’ on the island. Get ready for an adrenaline rush from 47-meters above the ground. You can also experience the ‘Giant Swing’ and ‘Skybridge’ at AJ Hackett Sentosa.

A few minutes east of AJ Hackett you will find iFLY Singapore and Skyline Luge .  

iFly Singapore is the best place in Singapore to experience indoor skydiving. It is one of the world’s largest indoor skydiving wind tunnels and the perfect place to overcome your fear of heights. It is conveniently located only 100 meters from Beach Station, making it one of the easiest attractions to access on the island. 

Skyline Luge is an exciting attraction that caters to people of all ages. If you are staying at a hotel on the island and wondering what to do on Sentosa at night, consider visiting here. The Luge is open throughout the day and at night. This is where you can speed your way down and maneuver around sharp corners. Consider bringing your whole family!

Some other notable attractions that are housed within Resorts World Sentosa include the Trick Eye Museum, Lake of Dreams, Kids Club and Sunset Sail Royal Albatross.

Is there a better place to visit in the world with kids than Singapore?

Singapore is jam packed with family friendly attractions. When planning my first trip here, I quickly found I changed from trying to work out what we should visit to what we would have to leave out until next time. There are just so many awesome family activities in Singapore.

Couple this with the fact that Singapore is an orderly, clean city with English as a prime language and an excellent public transportation system and it’s impossible for me to think of anywhere that is so easy to visit with kids.

And that is without even mentioning the food! Singapore is renowned for its delicious and varied cuisine. Hopefully, your kids will try some of Singapore’s awesome local cuisines but if they are fussier eaters, you will have no problems finding whatever it is that you are looking for.

All of this is why we have now visited Singapore with kids three times! And our oldest child is only 5. I can see many visits in our future as well as there are still many things to do in Singapore with kids that are on our list.

Speaking of a list, we have a massively long list of things to do with kids in Singapore in this article. Don’t expect to gket to all of them in one visit! Or even three. This is simply to help you work out what might appeal to your family most. I have also compiled some sample itineraries to make it easier.

Top 43 things to do in Singapore with kids

Like I said, this list is LONG! I have separated the places to visit in Singapore for kids by area to help with your planning. If you are short on time, it’s a good idea to keep to the same areas. It is, however, usually quick and easy to move between them on the MRT.

Gardens by the Bay

The Supertrees and OCBC Skyway

One of my absolute favourite things to do in Singapore is to visit Gardens by the Bay. This place is amazing and it is like visiting a futuristic garden with its vertical gardens (“Supertrees”!), big domed conservatories and very cool children’s garden.

Despite being short on time on every visit to Singapore, I have visited this place on both my last visits as I enjoy it so much and it is something different that I haven’t experienced elsewhere. It’s also perfect for kids!

There are many nice gardens – like ones to celebrate Singapore’s main cultural groups with Malay, Chinese and Indian gardens – as well as some big paid attractions. The biggest two are the conservatories – the flower dome and cloud forest. Unfortunately, the flower dome was closed for maintenance on our visit (do a better job than us of checking their website for closures !), so we could only see the cloud forest – thankfully the one that Mr 3 was excited about!

It was amazing. It’s a big dome featuring a 35 metre tall “mountain” complete with waterfall. There are many different levels with a lift to the top one and then we slowly made our way down. There are cool pathways that were suspended in the air at times. It features plant life from tropical highland areas up to 2000m above sea level. As a bonus, it’s nice and cool compared to the outside air. Mr 3 walked around saying a lot of “wow”s!

At the end there was an informative film about climate change that had Z hooked. He may now be the best informed 3yo in the world on this topic!

Another must visit is the OCBC Skyway among the Supertrees – which look like giant futuristic trees but are actually vertical garden displays. You can walk around these at 22 metres high. It would be cool to do this at night with older kids as they are all lit up and there are light and sound shows! I took Mr 3 here as he wanted to do it but freaked out at the last moment.

The highlight for any younger kid of the Gardens by the Bay is likely to be the Far East Organization Children’s Garden. Here you will find a water playground, tree houses and other awesome play equipment to climb all over. Both my kids loved it.

You don’t have to be a garden lover to enjoy Gardens by the Bay- I am certainly not. I had to be convinced by a good friend to even try it. It’s intriguing and different and just fun! So I am sure you will enjoy it. The high walkways on OCBC SKyway and in the Cloud Forest also give great views of Singapore.

Getting around can be a bit painful. It was very sunny and hot on my first visit with Miss 4 and I made the mistake of not buying shuttle tickets. Distances are longer than they look and in the heat with small legs, it’s not fun! Unfortunately the shuttle does not go many places but it works well for going between the MRT Bayfront and the conservatories. Plus, Mr 3 enjoyed just going on it on our last visit.

The gardens themselves are free and you can walk around and see many attractions for free including the great children’s garden. However you do have to pay for the conservatories and the OCBC skyway – which is the 22 metre high walkway. For non-residents, its $28/$15 (adult/child 3-12) for the conservatories and $5/$3 for the skyway. The shuttle is $3 per person (including kids) . Basically everything is stroller friendly. *Free*

Singapore Flyer

A great introduction and one of our things to do in Singapore with family is to take a ride on the big Singapore flyer – the second largest observation wheel in the world.

It’s 165 metres high and there are some great views of the city. There is also the “Journey of Dreams” which is a multimedia exhibit about the history behind the wheel. It takes about 30 minutes to go around.

Take the MRT to the Promenade station.

Singapore River Bumboat Cruise

Another of the fun things to do in Singapore for families is to take a bumboat cruise around the Singapore river.

A popular option is to take a 40 minute cruise with a audio visual commentary among the main attractions including Boat Quay, Clark Quay and Marina Bay.

A popular option is Singapore River Cruises which has boats departing every 15 minutes.

COLONIAL DISTRICT

Fort canning park.

Fort Canning Park is a lovely, big green area in the middle of the city. There are some low key attractions here as well as a fabulous hotel (more about that below).

We first came here when our kids were 1 and 2 years old – I wouldn’t recommend it with such young kids. There are many steps and steep paths and it wasn’t easy with a pram. There wasn’t much space to run around for them either since most of the land is sloped. It is a lovely spot to get out of the city once the kids are a bit older though.

National Museum of Singapore

The National Museum of Singapore is an excellent attraction to add to your list of things to do with children in Singapore. Its lively, interactive and works well with kids and also has lots to teach all members of the family. The building itself is also beautiful.

There are children activity rooms as well as colourful reconstructions to keep young kids interested.

Mint Museum of Toys

This 5 level, purpose built museum for toys is one of the unique things to do for kids in Singapore.

There is an extensive collection of over 50,000 toys from over 40 countries dating from the mid 19th century. Keep in mind that the toys are on display and they aren’t for playing with.

Singapore Philatelic Museum

This museum is full of Singapore stamps and related items but it is much more than a stamp museum. It manages to tell the history of Singapore through stamps and interesting displays and has been designed with kids in mind making this one of the fun places for kids in Singapore

There is plenty to interest kids, including a current, special exhibition on Snoopy and activities that focus on families. There is also an interesting heritage room with information on the background and cultures of Singapore’s migrant populations.

ORCHARD ROAD

This famous shopping strip is a great place to head if you want to do some shopping. Massive shopping centres line the street and there are also other activities, like many cinemas.

Singapore Botanic Gardens

The Singapore Botanic Gardens is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a great place to have a run around and relax while learning more in a beautiful setting.

There are many different attractions in the gardens. Most are free, but you will need a ticket for the National Orchid Garden which is the largest collection of orchids on display in the world.

If you are looking for things to do in Singapore with children then you might want to head straight to the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden. It’s an interactive play area which also includes learning experiences to help kids learn how plants provide for their daily needs.

Maxwell Road Food Center – there are some good places to eat in Chinatown

Explore Chinatown

Chinatown has a great vibe and a fun Singapore activity for kids is just to walk around here, visit some of the low key attractions, do a bit of souvenir shopping and eat some food.

There are quite a few pedestrian only streets which makes things easier with young kids including ones that are filled with eating options. For those on a budget, try Maxwell Road Food Center or Chinatown Complex for some cheaper eats (more information below).

I recommend taking the MRT to the Chinatown stop. Then you can exit right into the middle of things. *Free*

Sri Mariamman Temple

Sri Mariamman Temple is Singapore’s oldest Hindu Temple and was originally built in 1823 before being rebuilt in 1843. It’s surrounded by Chinatown markets which makes it extra easy to visit.

It’s big, colourful and a nice place to take a wander. It’s only open in the morning and the evening – we found it went well with a dinner stop at the many options in Chinatown.

Buddha Tooth Relic Temple

This five storey temple in Chinatown is home to what is supposedly Buddha’s left canine tooth. It’s also a richly decorated temple which is well worth a visit for the whole family. In addition to the tooth, there is also a third floor museum of religious relics and a lovely rooftop garden with a big prayer wheel and ten thousand buddhas in a pagoda.

LITTLE INDIA

Little India

Another of the places to bring kids in Singapore is Little India. This is a great place to explore the Indian side of Singapore.

It’s a colourful area with the best part for us being lots of yummy Indian food. The hawker centre at the Tekka Center is a great place to start.

Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple

There are many temples in Little India and the most colourful and bustling is Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. This is one of the kid friendly places in Singapore and a great way for the kids to experience something different.

KAMPONG GLAM

Kampong Glam is a great area to explore – this is a street right behind our hotel

Kampong Glam is Singapore’s traditional Muslim area and historic seat of the Malay royalty with beautiful low rise buildings, mosques, shops and great eating options. It’s very easy to access from MRT Bugis.

Sultan Mosque

Sultan Mosque is Singapore’s largest, originally built in 1825 but replaced in 1928.

It’s a beautiful mosque both inside and out and tourists are welcome – just not at prayer times and non-Muslims should not enter the prayer hall. You need to cover up, but items are provided.

Malay Heritage Centre

While in Kampong Glam, the Malay Heritage Centre is one of the good places to visit in Singapore with kids that would like to learn more about Singapore’s past.

This museum is housed in the palace on this site that was built for the last sultan of Singapore and tells the history of Singapore’s Malay people.

Access from MRT Bugis. More information here . It is currently SGD$4 for adults, $2 for kids, free under 6’s.

CHANGI AND PASIR RIS

Changi Museum and Chapel

This museum is dedicated to the POW camps at Changi during World War II and the Japanese occupation.  The chapel museum has a recreation of two of the chapels in the different PoW camps around Changi. As part of a recreation of St. Luke’s Chapel, they have the famous murals painted by one of the prisoners.

The museum features many displays and lots of information about what life in Singapore and the camps was like during the Japanese occupation; but it’s not really for children. It is pram friendly and with free entry, it is budget friendly too.

You need to catch the bus here which is quite slow – about 50 minutes from the bus stop at Bugis MRT.  *Free*

Wild Wild Wet

A better budget option if you want to cool down compared to the big water park on Sentosa Island is Wild Wild Wet, located near the end of the train line at Pasir Ris.

It’s not very big, but there are water slides, a lazy river and a wave pool. The best part for us was a massive water playground which was lots of fun with our toddlers. We found this park worked better with young kids than Adventure Cove Waterpark.

It’s walking distance from Pasir Ris train station or there was a free shuttle when we visited. Under 3’s are free. You can find more information here .

NORTHERN SINGAPORE

Singapore Zoo

We’ve seen a lot of zoos and animal attractions on our travels but Singapore Zoo is probably one of the best. That’s a big claim but I feel it’s justified. It is one of the best things to do in Singapore with kids and there is a reason why so many tourists flock here.

Located on the Mandai Reservoir, the zoo is large and very green. There’s a huge variety of animals – from the usual tigers, lions, giraffes and zebras to polar bears and African penguins and more local animals like Komodo dragons and orangutans.

The animals are organised roughly by geography and well signed so its easy to find a particular enclosure you’re after (but grab a map). And speaking of the enclosures they are big and leafy, letting the animals run around and play and making things seen more natural (as natural as a zoo can be anyway). The downside is that sometimes the animals will just sleep out of view.

A  great thing is that you can get up pretty close to some of the animals. The enclosures are well designed so that you can often view them at different heights from multiple angles so you’re never too far from the action. It helped keep S really engaged. She enjoyed watching the orangutans for ages. There’s lots of shows at different times of day and feedings, where you can pay to feed various animals.

There’s a “tram” that does laps of the park to save you from walking. It cost extra, but it helped break up all the walking around which was tough on 5 year old S.

Facilities wise, the zoo is well served with lockers, baby change rooms, strollers and wagons to pull kids in for rent and restaurants and shops. There’s also a kids play area with (paid for) rides, playground and even a water play area. We didn’t stop there but it’s quite large.

Food wise the restaurants are expensive but not outrageously so.

We loved this zoo. It’s well set out and spacious and even though there were a lot of people, it didn’t feel too crazy. There’s a lot to see and you could easily spend a day here going from animal to animal with stops for lunch and a play

To get here take bus 138 from Ang Mo Kui MRT station (on the North-South line). It should cost $5 SGD from just about anywhere in Singapore to get both. Buses leave roughly every 15 minutes. We took a taxi from Ang Mo Kui and it cost $12. You can buy discounted tickets here and save $11 per ticket.

Night Safari

The Night Safari is an award winning experience and one of the top things to do in Singapore with family. There are over 2,500 nocturnal animals from 130 species to check out.

The journey starts with a tribal performance and continues on board a tram as you get to experience 7 geographical regions of the world. There are also walking trails, aviaries and a live show.

We ummed and ahhed about visiting here on our last trip, but decided to leave it until our kids are a bit older. In some ways it is ideal for younger kids thanks to the tram, but our kids just don’t do well with evening attractions – the park does not open until 7:15pm.

River Safari

Located next to the zoo is basically a whole other zoo/aquarium, the Rivier Safari. Dedicated to riverine environments and the animals and fish who live in them. The focus is on ten rivers: including the Mississippi, the Ganges, the Mekong, the Yangtze, the Nile, the Mary and particularly the Amazon.

Compared to the zoo, the River Safari was not very busy, almost empty on the weekday we visited.

Some rivers get more focus then others but each has a distinct feel with animals and fish particular to that river. For example the Yangtze zone had a giant Panda (there’s usually two but due to maintenance the panda area was reduced).

Unlike a zoo where you wander around as you like, the River Safari has one long path that guides you around everything (some things you can cut out). This is a good thing as tanks and enclosures are well spaced out.

We loved the River Safari

The highlight is meant to be the river safari boat ride that takes you on a 15 minute ride around the reservoir looking for animals, but we didn’t see anything except the tall giraffes from the zoo.

Better was the Amazon River Quest, a theme park like boat ride through enclosures were we got up really close to some of the animals. S loved it so much we did it twice! The Amazon River Quest was extra – $5 for adults and $3 for kids when we were there – and you need to be over 106cm to go on it.

Another highlight is how close you could get to some of the animals  and fish – closer than the zoo. Some of the creatures in the aquarium tanks seemed to enjoy coming right up to the glass. And in the Amazon section you could wander through a Squirrel Monkey enclosure where the monkeys ran all around you – even literally over you on the ropes set up for them.

Like the zoo, there are a lot of facilities for families (like strollers, stroller parking areas where needed, lockers, changing rooms) and places to eat.

As good as Singapore Zoo is – and it is very good – S and I actually enjoyed the River Safari more. I liked it more because it felt more organised and relaxed (fewer people helped) with one trail to follow. S loved it because of the Amazon River Quest, the pandas, and just how close she got to get to some of the animals.

Both are great but if you’ve seen enough zoos or want something different then the River Safari gives you something a bit different.

WESTERN SINGAPORE

Singapore science centre.

This big science museum has plenty to keep the kids entertained and educated. There are many rooms and areas and it seemingly goes on and on – we were there 4 hours and saw just over half – and it felt like we raced through!

They also have outdoor exhibitions and space as well as many shows. We went to the fire tornado show which was a big hit with our kids. They also loved that there were baby chicks that we literally got to watch hatch! There are more shows on weekends, although I imagine there are also more people. We went on a Wednesday afternoon and there were not many other people.

There are plenty of things to touch and play with although it wasn’t as hands on for little kids as others I have been to. There is a lot of text and for this reason, I recommend it more for older kids – of course we did not see all of the centre so I may have missed a great preschool area.

Our kids did love it, so this wasn’t a problem at all. I just think older kids would get more out of it. I was teaching year 7 and 8 science back in Australia and there were many things in there that would have been perfect for them.

I recommend prioritising what you want to do – there is a lot! There are also other exhibitions that cost extra and a special theatre. Given how much is included in just a normal ticket, I wouldn’t pay for the extras unless there is something that is of particular interest to your family.

Next door to the Singapore Science Centre is Snow City. Here, you can play in the snow despite being in tropical Singapore!

The kids had never seen snow when we first planned Singapore so we planned to visit here. Then we had the opportunity in Jakarta the week before so gave it a miss.

You can buy combined tickets with Singapore Science Centre to save money. One adult or child is $18 for an hour. This includes jacket and boot hire. For an extra cost you can hire trousers and gloves. Take socks or purchase there. More information here .

Singapore Discovery Centre

One of the kids friendly places in Singapore on the list for our last visit was the Singapore Discover Centre.

Singapore Discovery Centre (or SDC) is a highly interactive centre for discovering more about Singapore as well as lots of other things – there is a long list of exhibits and attractions including an Army Museum, bus tours of the Military Academy, 3D cinema, pedal boats, crisis simulation theatre (what happens when a bomb explodes at Raffles Place MRT station through the experiences of a young girl), land planning strategies for Singapore, rides, labs, studios… the list goes on and on.

Jurong Bird Park

Jurong Bid Park is Asia’s largest bird park with over 5000 birds! It’s another option of family day activities in Singapore.

There are opportunities to feed the birds, giant aviaries and live shows to add to the experience. There is also the chance to see rare and endangered birds at the Breeding and Research Centre.

Jurong Bird Park is related to Singapore Zoo and the other big animal attractions in Singapore. You can take the MRT to Boon Lay station and then bus 194. You can find more information here or buy discounted tickets here .

SENTOSA ISLAND

I may have listed Sentosa Island last in this guide for areas in Singapore but don’t be fooled – it may very well be first on your list of things to do in Singapore for kids. That’s because this island off the island of Singapore is just full of family friendly attractions including many big name ones – like Universal Studios Singapore!

In fact, if you are not in Singapore for long, you may want to think about only visiting Sentosa Island. There are some great hotels here as well (see below) and it would be easy to spend days just on this island. On one trip with S, we actually spent most of our 5 day trip visiting the Singapore family attractions here. In fact, I have a whole separate guide to Sentosa Island that I recommend reading. It gives more details on all the attractions as well as how to get to and around Sentosa Island.

Resorts World Sentosa

Resorts World Sentosa is an area that takes up a big chunk of Sentosa Island. This is where you will find the biggest places to visit in Singapore for families – Universal Studios Singapore, S.E.A Aquarium, Dolphin Island and Adventure Cove Waterpark (more about these attractions below). It would be easy to visit Sentosa Island and only come to this section of the island.

In addition to these attractions, you can also visit:

• Trick Eye Museum
• Crane Dance (free evening light show)
• Lake of Dreams (free evening light show)

Resorts World Sentosa is also home to a casino, many hotels, restaurants, shops and concerts. It’s a nice area to just walk around even if you aren’t headed to a big attraction. We particularly recommend eating at Din Tai Fung here. They have the best dumplings!

Universal Studios Singapore

The Lost World zone

Universal Studios Singapore is the big ticket attraction on Sentosa Island and at the top of the list of our favourite things to do with family in Singapore. We had such a great time here.

The park consists of 7 themed zones – Madagascar, Far Far Away (Shrek theme), The Lost World, Ancient Egypt (including The Mummy), Sci-Fi City (including Transformers) and New York (including Sesame Street).

Each themed zone has its own attractions, shopping, eating establishments and street entertainment around the theme.  There are rides, street performances, live shows and movie characters.

S.E.A Aquarium

S.E.A. Aquarium

This is one of the largest aquariums in the world and it is also one of the best kids activities in Singapore.

The aquarium is quite extensive with many undersea displays including long tunnels to start and finish the experience. There are also touch tanks, aquariums under the floor and activities for kids. The activities, in particular, helped make this a great experience with our then 4 year old. They helped keep her engaged and interested and she made some cool things.

Adventure Cove Waterpark and Dolphin Island

Adventure Cove Waterpark is a fun water park located in the Resorts World Sentosa part of Sentosa Island with water slides, wave pool, kid water play areas, a water based obstacle course, snorkeling with fish over a reef and a river to tube around.

There is also Dolphin Island Marine Life Park within its boundaries where you can wade with sting rays or play with dolphins (both at an extra charge and with a minimum height requirement of 122cm and 115cm respectively).

This park is best visited with kids over 122cm – S was under this when we visited and there was a lot she couldn’t do. There is a big water playground for younger kids, although there was just too much water being poured around for it to be enjoyable for us when we visited.

KidZania Singapore

KidZania Singapore opened not long after our last visit in January 2016 so we haven’t been yet. However, we love KidZanias!! We have visited three so far and they are all very similar.

Basically, KidZania is a mini world for kids where they get to do jobs which they then get paid for and they can spend the money they earn. My kids have done some amazing activities from being fire fighters to dentists to working at a 7/11 and making their own cheeseburgers at McDonalds. The whole concept is just awesome and all of our family loves them.

Port of Lost Wonder

For younger kids, this is another of our favourite Singapore kids’ activities. Port of Lost Wonder is basically a big, outdoor play centre and our 4 year old loved it.

It basically consists of a big boat with water slides, ladders, stairs, ropes and wading pool areas. The kids will get very wet but have a lot of fun! More information here .

Skyline Luge Sentosa

Of the smaller attractions on Sentosa Island, this was our favourite. It’s quick but lots of fun!

Basically, it consists of two parts – a luge ride down from Imbiah Lookout and then a chairlift ride back up. The luge is basically a cart with wheels, steering and brakes. If you are travelling with young kids you can ride together – this worked well for us.

The ride down was awesome and the chair lift ride back up was nice. My biggest tip is to do it more than once! You can find discounted tickets here .

Sentosa 4D Adventureland

Sentosa 4D Adventureland consists of a 4D movie, 4D roller coaster and a 4D interactive shooting game. They are fun, but better suited to older kids.

This is a 75 metre high, 450 metres long zipline over the jungle and down to the beach. There are also aerial rope courses and a free fall simulator. You can buy discounted tickets here .

Singapore Cable Car

One of the best ways to start your Singapore family activities on Sentosa is with a cable car ride over to the island. It’s quick, easy, there’s great views and you really should do it at least once. Find discounted tickets here .

Palawan Beach

Sentosa Island is also home to three beaches: Palawan, Siloso and Tanjong. Each beach is marketed to different groups – Palawan is for families, Siloso for action and Tanjong for couples wanting romance. This is a great way to relax in between all the other attractions. *Free*

JOHOR BAHRU

Johor Bahru is technically not in Singapore – it is just over the causeway in Malaysia. However, it is quick and easy to visit from Singapore with local buses, taxis and trains making the journey pretty much non stop. It only takes about an hour including going through both immigration check points in our experiences.

Many people combine a visit to Singapore with Johor Bahru including us. There are some big attractions in Johor Bahru for kids.

In an ideal world, I would recommend staying for a few days in Johor Bahru (you can read a great hotel review here ), but many people day trip over and that is very possible as well. Legoland Malaysia

The biggest reason families head over the causeway on a family trip to Singapore has to be this big theme park located in the Johor Bahru area. It is well worth the trip.

Legoland Malaysia is just brilliant. It is made up to two different theme parks – the main Legoland park and then Legoland Water Park. You can visit one or both and it is a great attraction with kids.

There are many rides, shows, attractions and of course Lego! Our kids loved all the opportunities to play with Lego as much as they loved all the rides. The shows are also great. The thing that impressed me most, however, was the attention to detail. The Lego theming throughout the park is superb and makes for a very enjoyable visit.

Thomas Town and Sanrio Hello Kitty Town

The Bob the Builder live show was lots of fun with great interaction with the kids.

This indoor theme park about 5 minutes drive from Legoland Malaysia is two theme parks in one – on one level is Sanrio Helly Kitty Town which is all about Hello Kitty, and on another two levels is Thomas Town which is all about Thomas the Tank Engine and friends, Angelina Ballerina, Bob the Builder, Pinggu and Barney.

Thomas Town (previously called Little Big Club) is one of my top places to visit in the world with preschoolers – it is just so much fun with toddlers and preschoolers. Our kids loved getting to dance with Angelina, going on Thomas themed rides, building a wall in the Bob the Builder area, participating in the live shows and playing in the well executed play areas. S literally talked about this place for years after we visited when she was two.

Sanrio Hello Kitty Town is for Hello Kitty enthusiasts with Hello Kitty’s house, fantastic live shows, some fun activities and some challenges in Hello Kitty in Oz World. What we liked about this theme park is that we were able to do the activities together, rather than just watch our kids have fun.

Sample itineraries

So it’s all well and good that I have given you so many Singapore activities for kids, but now your head is probably spinning and you are trying to work out what to fit into your vacation! Here’s some ideas.

What will work best for you will vary on two main things: your budget – some of these attractions really add up and some are free – and how much you want to just do fun kid stuff vs having a cultural experience. I personally try to combine some bigger ticket items with some free ones (to help keep it affordable and not feel like we’re missing out) and some cultural experiences with things that are just plain fun.

Itinerary 1: Singapore’s biggest family friendly activities (5 days)

Day 1: Singapore Zoo and either Singapore River Quest or the Night Safari Day 2: Head over the causeway to Legoland Malaysia Day 3: Spend the morning at Gardens by the Bay and the afternoon at the Singapore Science Centre Day 4: Take your pick of the best attractions at Sentosa Island (more hints about that here ) Day 5: Finish with one of Singapore’s biggest family attractions – Universal Studios Singapore

Far Far Away at Universal Studios Singapore

Itinerary 2: Singapore on a budget (3 days)

Day 1: Learn about Singapore’s three main cultural groups. Start the day with some breakfast in Little India. Visit Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple before walking across to Kampong Glam. Visit the Sultan Mosque and Malay Heritage Centre and then have lunch. Finish the day in Chinatown with some temple visits, souvenir shopping and dinner. Day 2: Start the day at Gardens by the Bay. Ensure you check out the Children’s Garden. Either have a picnic lunch here or head into Marina Bay Sands for lunch. Take a short train trip to Clark Quay. Have a walk around here and Fort Canning. If the budget allows, visit the National Museum of Singapore. Day 3: Head over to Sentosa Island for a day of fun and relaxation. There are plenty of free attractions here. Try Fort Siloso, Fot Siloso Skywalk, nature walks, the Southern Most Point of Continental Asia and the beaches. If you still have some energy left, head to Resorts World Sentosa in the evening for the free light shows.

Itinerary 3: Sentosa Island (3 days)

Day 1: Take the cable car over to Sentosa Island and then take your pick from all the fun, smaller attractions on Sentosa Island. With smaller kids, we especially recommend Port of Lost Wonder. We also loved the Skyline Luge Sentosa. I would have loved to try the MegaZip and iFly had my kids been older. Once you are tired out, try one of the beaches or a beach club. In the evening, head to the light shows at Resorts World Sentosa Day 2: Visit S.E.A. Aquarium and then relax at the Adventure Cove Waterpark. For dolphin enthusiasts, also head to Dolphin Island. Day 3: Finish with Universal Studios Singapore

Itinerary 4: A taste of Singapore (3 days)

Day 1: Start the day at the National Museum of Singapore, head to nearby Little India for lunch and a wander. Visit Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. Head to Chinatown for dinner, look at the temples and do some souvenir shopping. Day 2: Start the day at Gardens by the Bay. Visit the Children’s Garden and the conservatories. Have a picnic lunch and then head over to Sentosa Island for a fun afternoon visiting your top pick of the attractions above. Day 3: Head to your pick of Singapore Zoo, Night Safari and Singapore River Quest.

Itinerary 5: A taste of Singapore (5 days)

Days 1-3 as above Day 4: Take a Singapore River Bumboat cruise, then head out to Singapore Science Centre or Singapore Discovery Centre. Day 5: Visit Universal Studios Singapore.

Singapore budget tips

The one thing that stops me spending more time in Singapore is the price tag.

Compared to neighbouring countries, it is expensive. However, if you compare it to other big, developed cities, then I think Singapore is very reasonably priced.

The biggest budget killer for families is going to be accommodation. There is no getting around that this price will add up. For single parent families with one kid, it is not so bad. There are quite a few budget hotels for less than SGD$100 a night. Once you get up to a family of 4, however, it does get tricky and unfortuntately there are no good tricks, other than shopping around.

I recommend using Booking.com for finding the best deal.

The other big cost can be attractions. If you want to do all the big ticket items – like Singapore Zoo, Universal Studios and Legoland, then this is going to add up. As you can see from above, though, there are plenty of things you can do for free or for low cost, so it’s about picking your attractions accordingly – look for the  *Free* marking on the attractions listed above.

To save money on attractions, I recommend buying discounted tickets on Klook . They sell tickets to many of the places to visit with kids in Singapore and there can be some great savings.

Gardens By The Bay is one of my favourite places in Singapore

Thanks to the MRT system, it can be economical to get around. However, once you need to buy tickets for your kids, it does start to add up and taxis can actually become cheaper for shorter distances so this is something to keep in mind.

Children under 90cm or under 7 are free. However, there seems to be some type of card you need to buy for kids under 7 to be free if they are not under 90cm. I have found this information about the card. It all seemed too complicated for me to worry about it on a short visit so we just bought tickets for 5 year old S and carried Z through the barriers on our last visit. I would love some clarity on these rules if anyone can tell me!

Eating out is generally good value, but I would no longer call it cheap. In 2014, I struggled to eat for less than SGD$20 for just me and a 4 year old whether we were at a hawker centre or food court or whatever. On our latest visit last month it was even worse, except when we were out of the main tourist area in the southern parts of Singapore. Then the food was more like SGD$5 per meal. In the more touristy areas we paid more than we would pay in Melbourne for Asian food.

In general, however, heading to a hawker centre (especially a less well known one) is the way to go or just grab some bread products from one of the many bakeries and have a picnic, especially if you are heading somewhere like Sentosa Island or Gardens by the Bay.

Family accommodation in Singapore

There is a wide range of accommodation options in Singapore and you should not have a problem finding something suitable for your family. My big tip is to stay walking distance to an MRT statioon and then the exact location does not matter too much although being near the attractions you most want to visit is always a bonus.

The following are two hotels we have stayed in on recent visits and had very positive experiences.

Village Hotel Bugis

Our family room

This hotel is in a fabulous location – close to MRT Bugis which is on two great train lines, in Kampong Glam and very close to Little India. We found it very easy to go everywhere we wanted to go from here.

For a family, it is a fabulous choice. There are family rooms. They are compact but we had enough room for the 4 of us.

There is a swimming pool, multiple restaurants, a gym, a self service laundry and a shopping centre downstairs.

It is all of a high standard and we enjoyed both our stays here. It’s also good value and the prices are reasonable.

One of the new Cars themed rooms at Village Hotel Bugis

The Village Hotel Bugis now has some amazing kid themed rooms with themes such as Cars and Princess Sofia . On top of the theming, the rooms contain a sofa bed, kid bathroom amenities, colouring book and kid television channels. There’s also the option of a baby bathtub and cot for children under 2.

Hotel Fort Canning

If you are looking for a luxury hotel, suitable for families, in a convenient location but surrounded by parkland then this is the perfect choice.

Hotel Fort Canning is in a beautiful, historic building on the edge of Fort Canning Park. It’s a great spot as it’s still close to Dhoby Ghaut MRT station which is on three train lines.

There are beautiful pools, stunning rooms and it’s just a gorgeous building. My favourite part, however, was the aperitif hour. Complimentary drinks and canapes are served in the evenings. Kids are welcome and this provided us with a great chance to make some friends at the hotel.

Eating in Singapore

There is some fabulous food in Singapore and I always make it a goal to eat some fabulous Malay, Chinese and Indian food (the three main cultures) every visit. The easiest way to do this is to go to each of the main Malay, Chinese and Indian areas (all talked about above!) and eat out.

It is not hard at all to find somewhere to eat in Singapore. There are places everywhere. When we have time, we like to head to a hawker centre so we have lots of options. We find this generally works best for kids as they are usually outdoors as well which is always our preference with our loud kids!

For fussier eaters, hawker centres should always have some choices that work too. There is usually a more western style food option and there is always fried rice and/or vegetables.

We had a book this visit which made eating out more fun – There’s No Carrot In Carrot Cake – which described lots of different local dishes in Singapore. It helped us be more adventurous and try some delicious food.

Here are some places we ate out and enjoyed.

• Zam Zam , opposite Sultan Mosque in Kampong Glam. Delicious Muslim food.
• Maxwell Road Hawker Centre , great eating option in Chinatown.
• Chinatown Food Street , a pedestrian street full of eating options. The atmosphere is great but I find the food overpriced.
• Newton Hawker Centre , great food and range near Newton MRT.
• Tekka Centre , good Indian eating option in Little India.
• Din Tai Fung , world renowned for their dumplings and for good reason. Sooooo good! We ate at the one at Resorts World Sentosa but there are many other branches in Singapore.

Doctor in Singapore

Unfortunately on our most recent visit, we were able to try out the medical facilities in Singapore – S had an ear infection so we visited a doctor.

Since we were staying next door to the Raffles Hospital on North Bridge Road next to Bugis MRT, we headed there. We had no problems seeing a GP fast and they quickly told us the problem. We received our medicine at the GP clinic as well and it was all very efficient and easy.

Getting around Singapore

Getting around Singapore is great. One of the many things I love about this city is their fabulous public transportation network.

The MRT system is quite extensive and trains run often. There are also buses which you will need to use as well for some of the attractions above.

It is easy to buy tickets at MRT stations. There are lots of ticket machines and you just need to select what station you are going to for it to calculate the fare for you. For the bus, you can pay in cash as you board.

As I said above, for short distances, a family might be better off in a taxi than taking public transport.

Our verdict

We love love love Singapore, especially with kids.

It is just such an easy, lovely place to visit which gives everyone a different cultural experience while still being similar to home and a very easy city to navigate. Our kids start cheering just at the mention of Singapore!

It would be my pick of the best place to visit in the world with kids. English is a common language, its easy to get around, its neat, orderly, there’s a great range of food and there are just so many awesome attractions.

I have heard some people describe Singapore as boring, and honestly, I don’t understand why. If they get bored in Singapore, then they just aren’t trying very hard at all as there is plenty to do.

The only downside is that all this wonderfulness does come at a cost. It’s going to set you back more than a holiday to Malaysia, Bali or Thailand. But it is worth it!

Fabulous 5 Day Singapore Itinerary For Families

Borders are slowly but surely reopening in Southeast Asia , and once more, we have our sights set not just on a stopover to Singapore but on a complete family vacation in the tropics.

Singapore has so much to offer for families, it’s a shame to see so many cram in the best the city has to offer in only one or two days. We think five days is a great amount of time to spend in Singapore to absorb all the highlights without burning too much of a hole in your holiday budget.

We’re going to talk you through all the practicalities of planning a post-COVID trip to Singapore, including:

Visa Rules and Entry Requirements for Singapore

Timing your trip to singapore, where to stay in singapore with kids, how to get around in singapore, what can families do with 5 days in singapore, more you could add to this singapore itinerary.

As you’d expect, the exact requirements have constantly been changing since March 2020.

It’s important that you familiarise yourself with not only your Visa requirements and eligibility for entering Singapore but also the Singapore arrival card requirements, which include a health declaration for all foreign travellers entering Singapore.

It is important to note that your Visa and SGAC are two separate documents, both required for all family members.

The Singapore Government’s Safe Travel website is the best place to source current COVID rules for you and your family.

Due to Singapore’s geographic position in Asia, sitting almost on the equator, you can expect a hot and humid climate year-round with an average daytime temperature of 27°C.

Whilst there are no traditional seasons, you will find it slightly cooler in January and February and slightly hotter and more humid from June to August. There is a short rainy season from November to January, but don’t expect it to dampen your Singapore plans too much.  

Assuming you are visiting for five days, where are you best staying in Singapore when travelling with kids?

The plus side of staying in Singapore, it is compact and easy to navigate the city. You can easily get around, even with a stroller, if you case yourself close to an MRT station.

The downside to accommodation in Singapore, it is certainly not a budget destination (relative to its Southeast Asia neighbours). Larger families with 3+ kids will need to consider two adjoining rooms or serviced apartments.

Around Clarke Quay, a good mid-range choice is  Holiday Inn . If your budget will stretch then,  the Shangri-La Singapore is one of the best family hotel experiences, arguably anywhere in the world!

You may want to vary this itinerary slightly depending on your kid’s ages and interests, but here’s broadly how we suggest you could split your time in the Lion City:

Day 1: 5 Day Singapore Itinerary

• Relax and unwind after your flight with a morning spent at one of Singapore’s most popular and beautiful outdoor spots , the Botanical Gardens. Take in the National Orchard Garden and kids can start burning off some of that energy at Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden.
• For the afternoon, explore on foot around Chinatown, including the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum and Chinatown Heritage Centre.
• Spend your late afternoon around the iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel and, if time permits, a stop in at the beautiful flower-shaped Art Science Museum.
• Snap a shot of the Merlion and grab dinner at One Fullerton or Clifford Pier for views of the Marina Bay Sands and the 8 pm light show.

Day 2: 5 Day Singapore Itinerary

• An early start, head to Singapore Zoo for Jungle Breakfast ! Pack bathers, as the kids will definitely want to end the experience in the splash park.
• We suggest a relaxing afternoon at your hotel pool if you have one, or pop to one of the beaches on Sentosa Island.
• Head to a hawker’s market for dinner. Easily accessible from the city centre are Lau Pa Sat Food Centre and Gluttons Bay Food Centre.

Day 3: 5 Day Singapore Itinerary

• A fun-filled day to be spent on Sentosa Island – Singapore’s playground. If you’re not already staying on Sentosa, you can catch the cable car over for dramatic views or take the quick and easy MRT.
• A full day can be had just at Universal Studios , but if you want to mix things up, we’d suggest half a day put aside at Adventure Cove Water Park too; consider Express Passes if you want to fit both in and avoid hot, cranky little ones.
• There’s a huge range of lunch and dinner options at Resorts World Sentosa.

Day 4: 5 Day Singapore itinerary

We’re going to give you two options on day 4, depending on your kids’ ages and interests:

• Option 1: Head across the border to Malaysia for a full day of theme park fun at Legoland in Nasajaya, Johor Bahru. You may even want to stay the night at the impressive Legoland hotel here, complete with a lazy river!
• Option 2: Let’s pack a picnic and hit the water. Setting sail from Marina South Pier several times a day is the ferry out to St Johns Island and Lazarus Island, to the south of Singapore. Enjoy a full day out in the sun before dinner at one of the hawker’s markets.

Day 5: 5 Day Singapore Itinerary

• Take in a different perspective of the city with a self-guided walking tour through Little India.
• Head for lunch around Clark Quay, touristy but beautiful! If time permits, take a river cruise or Duck tour.
• Finish your Singapore experience with a trip to the stunningly picturesque Gardens by the Bay . See the spectacular Supertree Grove, visit the two incredible biodomes, and don’t forget bathers (again – pack several!) for a stop at the Far East Asia Organisation Children’s Garden, always a highlight for kids in visiting Singapore.
• Stay until evening to see the Supertrees alight at night.

Every family can move at a different pace, so you can, of course, mix and match days from this Singapore itinerary; build in more stops and downtime if you need to (the city is full of parks and playgrounds!) or cram even more attractions and experiences into your 5 days in Singapore.

Singapore's allure goes beyond its iconic hotels, manicured gardens and world-class airport. A maturing local identity peeks through if you know where to look.

At first glance, the city isn't really known for range when it comes to travel, especially with its headliners clinching superlatives at every turn. Attractions like the Marina Bay Sands , Gardens by the Bay  and Jewel Changi Airport  suggest that the city-state has little beyond manmade sights to offer, but ask any local and they'll be happy to point out that there's life beyond Crazy Rich Asians.

To know Singapore more intimately, venture beyond its famous showcase to the various neighborhoods around the island. From a red light district that doubles as an excellent food hub, to a tranquil reservoir hiding the world's first nocturnal zoo, here are the best places to visit in Singapore to discover its alternative charms.

1. Pulau Ubin

A rural island holding fast to the 1960s

Off the eastern shores of Singapore is Pulau Ubin , a tiny island where many locals consider to be the last vestige of kampong (village) life. More than just a description of a gathering of makeshift houses made of zinc sheets and wood, the term represents a simpler time when the communal spirit was strong. Thus, it became a destination for Singaporeans to visit for some authentic nostalgia. 

While small, the best way to explore the island is by bicycle – a fact evident by the many rental shops near the jetty entrance. If you have limited time, take the eastern trail as it leads to the island's most famous sight,  Chek Jawa wetlands . Walk the extensive boardwalk to spot mudskippers and fiddler crabs, or come during low tide to see carpet anemones, ribbon seagrass and the occasional horseshoe crab. At the end of the walk, climb up Jejawi Tower for panoramic views of the area.

As one of the few sites for granite mining in the early days, the western trail features three water-filled quarries that look spectacular on a sunny day. Cycle first to Petai Quarry and pop by Butterfly Hill to see a small knoll decorated with plants that draw the fluttering creatures. Further along, you'll come by Puaka Hill. It's an easy 15-minute hike up to the highest viewpoint on the island, which offers stunning views of Ubin Quarry from the top. Consider dropping by Wei Tuo Fa Gong Temple nearby, a temple from the 1950s with colorful prayer flags over a pond. 

Return to the main village and have a meal at one of the humble eateries there. Enjoy the rustic atmosphere as well as an impressive example of a wayang stage for traditional theatrical performances, now rarely seen on the main island. 

Planning tip: Take a one-way ferry ride to the island from Changi Point Ferry Terminal for just $4 a person. The independent operators will wait to fill the boat of 12 before leaving, so waiting times may vary from a few minutes to 20 minutes. Insect repellant is heavily advised. 

The red-light district that's also a popular supper spot

Since it's a place that's often seen as sanitized, the fact that there are legalized brothels in Singapore may be a surprise to some. Limited to the even-numbered lorongs (lanes) branching out from Geylang Road, one can identify them by their open gates and their red numbered signs or crimson hanging lanterns at the door. However, for many locals, the star attraction here is really the unpretentious food scene, especially after dark.

It's all a very logical evolution of course. Customers visited in the wee hours and neighboring businesses adjusted their hours for the clientele. As more night owls gravitated there for supper, Geylang became a 24/7 food haven. An early example is Yong He Eating House , a Taiwanese joint most famous for their fried fritters and smooth beancurd. It's also one of the few places you can try a salty variety of the latter, made savory with minced meat, preserved vegetables, spring onions and dried shrimp. Further down the road, Eminent Frog Porridge has earned itself a mention in the Michelin Bib Gourmand guide with their claypot delicacy, but there are other stir-fry dishes for those not into the creatures. Charcoal-cooked dishes are popular too, with stunning examples of seafood noodles fried in a wok at Swee Guan Hokkien Mee and the oven-roasted char siew pork slivers in Koung’s Wanton Mee . For a sharing platter, Mongkok Dim Sum serves up all sorts of steaming treats in small baskets throughout the day. There's even a string of vendors selling that most polarizing of fruits, the durian.

Local tip: Safety is not an issue despite the repute, and the brothel operators mainly keep to themselves. If you do venture into their lanes, do not gawk and refrain from taking pictures and videos. Instead, if you wish to better learn about the history of the area, the independent Geylang Adventures will assure one of a vivid and respectful trail.

A photogenic Peranakan enclave with tasty adventures

An ethnic group that emerged from early Chinese settlers marrying with Malay and Indonesian communities in Southeast Asia, the Peranakans bear out this fused heritage in an attractive and vibrant way. Other than visiting the museum at Armenian Street , one can visit Katong to experience their architecture and food.

The most photogenic stretch can be found at Koon Send Road, where a line of multi-colored pastel terrace houses are a perfect backdrop. As you make your way down Joo Chiat Road towards East Coast Road, you'll notice numerous food options, ranging from local Bak Kut Teh (pork rib soup) to trendy cafes. You'll also come by Old Bibik's Peranakan Kitchen , a great option for some authentic cuisine. As you move towards East Coast Road, try to spot one of the many eye-catching murals tucked in the alleys.

The main stretch holds more food offerings, but visit Peranakan Inn & Lounge for homey classics like Ayam (chicken) with Buah Keluak – a savory and painstaking dish made special by the earthy nuts. Baba Chews is a more commercial counterpart located below Hotel Indigo. Across the road, the glutinous rice dumplings at Kim Choo Kueh Chang are hot commodities, especially during the Mid-Autumn Festival. While you're there, popular food choices include Katong Laksa  – which serves a creamy curry noodle dish – and Birds of Paradise , a local gelato maker known for their botanical flavors. 

As the area is not as accessible via the local subway system, make the most of your outing with a visit to the nearby East Coast Park,  Singapore's largest example of the coastal ecosystem. Then visit East Coast Lagoon Food Village to sample the tasty hawker fare.

4. Tanjong Pagar

A different creature by day and night

With its proximity to the Central Business District (CBD), Tanjong Pagar is a hotbed of suits seeking out hawker nosh at Amoy and Maxwell Food Centers, or their afternoon cuppa at chic cafes. This juxtaposition between modern and traditional can also be seen in its architecture, especially in Chinatown and along Amoy Street and Telok Ayer Street, where heritage shophouses sit next to towering blocks. Interestingly, this is also where one can find Singapore's multi-religious society represented along one road. Make your way to the South Bridge Road end of Pagoda Street and you'll find yourself between two 19th century places of worship,  Masjid Jamae and Sri Mariamman Temple. Move further south of the main road and you'll come by the impressive Buddha Tooth Relic Temple , with Fairfield Methodist Church just across the junction.

When the sun sets, the area goes from bustling to bar-centric, and here you'll find some of the world's best watering holes. In fact, two of the three Singaporean bars that have made it to the World's 50 Best list call this area home. Jigger & Pony is a more polished affair residing in Amara Hotel – an excellent place for an espresso martini. Sago House has a more convivial atmosphere in a compact space, along with a smaller menu that rotates regularly. For other tipple explorations, try Live Twice and Oriental Elixir .

Tanjong Pagar also hosts the island's only LGBTQ+ nightlife businesses. While not legally recognized, the community enjoys relative freedom at these establishments. Taboo and Tantric Bar are local institutions, while newer joints prefer more provocative names such as Sausage Market and Neil's Conversion Clinic .

A natural sanctuary with world-class facilities

The Singapore Zoo consistently places itself as one of the world's best animal parks and a must visit when visiting the country, thanks to its naturalistic habitats that cater to the wildlife. Always innovating, the teams behind the zoo created  Night Safari Park  in 1994, the world's first nocturnal zoo exhibit, and later on in 2014, River Wonders  – the first and only river-themed version in Asia. This was most recently joined by Bird Paradise in 2023, showcasing an astonishing variety of birds such as hornbills, flamingos and even penguins, set against various Asian backdrops like rice terraces and bamboo groves.

Less talked about is the nearby Upper Seletar Reservoir. Situated in the Central Catchment Reserve, it is a peaceful escape from the urban areas and also a great spot to catch a tree lined sunset. With such a scenic potential, the area is also slated for a new attraction in 2024,  Rainforest Park ; highlights will include a 250m suspension bridge and a canopy walk 11m above the ground.

Planning tip: Private hire is the most convenient transport option, and the journey will take about 30 minutes from the city. For public transport, take the MRT subway to Ang Mo Kio Station and transfer to bus 138. You can also drop off midway to visit the reservoir. Or, head further north to Khatib MRT and opt for the $2 park shuttle ride. Because Bird Paradise is slightly apart from the other zoo parks, it is best to visit it first and take the free shuttle to the other segments and finish with Night Safari Park.

6. Tiong Bahru

A residential relic which experienced a renaissance

Singapore's public housing scheme first took root in Tiong Bahru in the 1930s, which is why the designs here differ so greatly from today's soaring blocks. Rather than focusing on living density, the four-story buildings are comfortably spaced apart, making it an easy stroll for visitors. The architecture is a highlight here: quiet art deco with soft curves infused with Straits elements, like corridors reminiscent of five-foot ways, spiral staircases and light wells. Spot the green tinted glass used to shield residents from the harshest sun in certain areas.

For the most representative take, make your way to block 55 at the junction of Tiong Bahru Road and Tiong Poh Road to admire the architectural highlights of these rare pre-war buildings. When the area was slated for conservation, this drew the attention of the local creative community, and many have quietly made their homes or businesses here. You'll see this new millennial revival as you expand your walk, spotting intermittent options for quaint cafes, crafty retail stores and delicious hawker fare. Tiong Bahru Bakery , opened by Frenchman Gontran Cherrier, has become a stalwart fix for croissants, while Micro Bread & Co and Flock Cafe are great local alternatives for baked goods. Cat Socrates has delightful stationary and souvenirs to take home, and Nana & Bird is a well-established spot for chic women's clothing.

Don't forget to visit Tiong Bahru Market for a true local experience. The first level houses daily sundry, fresh flowers and other necessities, while the second story is a well-regarded hawker center. Take your pick from piping hot umami prawn noodles, freshly-steamed buns and even a Michelin Bib Gourmand chicken rice stall. Finish off your exploration at Nimble/Knead and have your weary body spiffed up at this unique spa housed in shipping containers.

7. Bugis and Kampong Glam

A thriving shopping area with Malay cultural attractions

Kampong Glam has emerged as one of the best places to visit in Singapore, largely thanks to its star attraction, Haji Lane. The bohemian street is as unbridled as it gets on the island, with energetic murals crawling up shophouses selling everything from clothing to trinkets. Make your way to the end at Beach Road (where the coastline used to be before reclamation happened) to experience a Mexican meal underneath a massive Aztec art piece at Piedra Niegra , or join the locals having some soupy prawn noodles at Blanco Court or Hainanese pork chop at Prince Coffee House.

There's plenty to see past the revelry at the lane. As you make your way towards Sultan Mosque , you'll notice Arab Street specializes in classic Middle-Eastern trade items like fabrics and rugs – much like in Singapore's early years. As you reach Bussorah Street, admire the golden domes of the mosque down a line of shophouses before popping by Jamal Kazura Aromatics for some heady traditional perfumes. Neighboring hole-in-the-wall Bhai Sarbat continues to pour out some of the best teh tarik (frothy milk tea) anywhere on the island. The nearby Malay Heritage Centre is undergoing some renovations, but the grounds are pretty to walk through given its original use as a former Istana (palace). Other worthy mentions include the dramatic Vintage Cameras Museum shaped like an actual Rollei, and Golden Landmark Shopping Center with its humble shops and startlingly beautiful glass elevators.

The larger neighborhood of Bugis is also an enjoyable slice of Singapore, boasting a more street market-style approach. Walk up to Albert Street and you'll be sandwiched between Albert Center with tons of hawker options and Fu Lu Shou Complex, which offers affordable massages. To the west stand two favored religious venues:  Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple , one of the busiest Chinese temple in Singapore, and beautifully decorated Sri Krishnan Temple.

Local tip: Bugis is also one of the best places to stay when visiting Singapore. Not only is it well-connected with four out of the six MRT subway lines within easy walking distance, but it contains surprisingly affordable accommodation options for such a central location, including independent operators and global brands like ibis and Mercure hotels.

Mark my words – you will never run out of things to do in Singapore with kids. For a relatively small place, this country packs a helluva lot of heat when it comes to entertainment, activities, man-made marvels, and just all round fun stuff.

Plus, each time you visit in the space of a few years, they seem to come out with some kind of new  next level awesomeness (The Jewel, anyone?) that leaves you adding more to your bucket list. The world can’t keep up, Singapore. We’ve been to the city 3 times and never seem to get around to everything on our list. It would probably be wise to just move there for a bit.

▪︎  How long to spend in Singapore? Umm, like, a month? Is that too farfetched? Okay, I get it. You don’t have that much leave. 3 days in Singapore will be enough to graze the surface and visit some of the main attractions, but I would probably say that 5 days is a good amount of time to  really enjoy the food, enjoy a few attractions and activities, and also not feel  too rushed.

▪︎  Which area to stay in Singapore? From our 3 trips, we’ve found that staying around Marina Square, near Bugis Junction, along Orchard Road, or around Clarke Quay were great central locations. We always found a shopping mall nearby with plenty of food options and, of course, an MRT (subway) station where we could conveniently get around.

▪︎  What’s the best way of getting around? I don’t always recommend catching a cab in South East Asia, but Singapore is the one place where I can honestly say that taxi drivers aren’t dodgy, they’re great conversationalists (or not when you just want silence), and on many occasions, we actually found them to be cheaper than the popular ride-sharing app, Grab.

If you’re travelling with kids, the upside to catching a taxi, is that car seats are not a legal requirement. Whereas with Grab, you’ll need to book a ‘family ride’ where the driver offers kids’ car seats, which are usually more expensive.

▪︎  When is the best time to visit? Singapore is a year-round destination, but if you don’t fancy getting caught in torrential downpours (let’s be real – who does?), then you’ll probably want to plan your travels between February and April during the country’s  drier season. I say  drier because it still is a tropical country and random bouts of rainfall can always materialise out of the blue.

TIP:  Rain season lasts from September until February –  not an ideal time to experience Singapore’s outdoor attractions.

▪︎  Avoid school holidays and Chinese New Year. If you’re looking for places to go with kids in Singapore – do not visit during school or seasonal holidays. Attractions will be immensely crowded, queues will be long, tantrums will be had, and patience will most definitely be tested. Check the public holidays calendar so that you can plan your trip outside of these testing times.

Rain or shine – this mega list of where to bring kids in Singapore on your family trip provides a great number of indoor and outdoor activities for all weather conditions. Sorry to break it to you, guys, but it’s also an expensive travel destination where the cost of visiting attractions can quickly add up and bore halls into your pockets. Luckily for you, I’ve included links where you can book discounted entry tickets where possible.

1. The Jewel, Changi Airport

Okay, stop. Before you hail a taxi and get up on outta Changi Airport – you  need to pop into Singapore’s newest and most spectacular attraction, The Jewel. Linked to Terminal 1’s arrival hall and via a pedestrian walkway from Terminals 2 and 3, this 10-storey man-made marvel is more than just your standard mall.

For starters, you can’t miss the centrepiece of it all – the HSBC Rain Vortex. You know, just the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. Nothing special. Okay, on the real – this piece of architecture is utterly mind-blowing. Prepare to pick your jaws off the floor.

That’s not it though. Not even close. Make your way up to the 5th floor where you’ll find the Canopy Bridge (snap some serious gram-worthy pics of the waterfall here), Canopy Park (literally an indoor botanical garden), epic slides for kids, a Hedge Maze, a 25 metre high suspended net kids can walk or bounce on, a Mirror Maze, and world-class eateries that will blow your tastebuds away.

2. Singapore Zoo

A family trip to Singapore wouldn’t be anywhere near complete without a visit to this world-famous zoo. We’ve been to many zoos around the world, and so far, this one ranks number 1 in the entire world for us. Big call, I know. But, it really is that good.

Occupying 26 hectares of land, the zoo is situated in a lush rainforest setting and boasts an ‘open concept’. What does that mean? All you have to do is look up as you’re gallivanting through the zoo and you’ll find the most adorable apes swinging and climbing the trees above your head.

Inside, you’ll find a sports arena, Ninja Warrior style obstacles, tube slides, trampolines, a skate park, and even rock climbing wall – all packed into one crazy fun space that kids (and adults) will go bonkers over.

23. Rent an Electric Scooter

What’s better than exploring Singapore on foot? Rent an e-scooter for a day and cover quadruple times the amount of sights. Environmentally friendly and less physical effort on your behalf, zip off to landmarks, such as, Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, Merlion Park and many more on the comforts of a standing or sitting electric scooter. I’m not even gonna lie – we did this in Singapore with our 4-year old balancing on the front and our 2-year old in a carrier on my back.

24. Science Centre Singapore

Fascinating, educational and one of the most interesting places for kids in Singapore – the Science Centre is an attraction the whole family can enjoy to learn about technology, nature and science. Embark on a dinosaur expedition at DinoQuest, experience  real snow inside Snow City, explore a living laboratory of plants inside Ecogarden, test your ninja skills inside the Laser Maze, get wet and learn about H2O at the Waterworks playspace, plus hundreds more exhibits to get hands-on in.

25. Natural History Museum

26. Relax at East Coast Park

Roughly a 12-minute drive from the centre of Singapore is a 15km stretch of coastline lined with an array of playgrounds, BBQs and local restaurants. But, if you’re a real foodie – don’t miss the East Coast Lagoon Food Village hawker centre where you can dig your teeth in some of the tastiest Chilli Crab and seafood dishes in all of Singapore.

Take the kids for a spin on Asia’s largest observation wheel – the Singapore Flyer – and bask in the captivating views of the city from above.

30. Forest Adventure Treetop Course

For outdoor adventure places to go with kids in Singapore, head to the largest treetop park in the city – Forest Adventure Treetop . Promising a day filled with ‘adrenalin pumping action’, laughs and ‘achievement unlocked’ moments, this 2.5 hour activity will create family bonding moments for climbers big and small. If you’re game, clip yourselves onto the Big Zip and zoom across the 300 metre long zipline suspended over a bed of water.

Sensing our innate wild instincts and love for the outdoors, the lovely team at Novotel arranged their newly launched Lil’ Explorers at Camp suite for our family. Let me tell you what – this room is a dream come true for glampers. If sleeping under the starry night sky, getting eaten by mosquitoes and outdoor showers is not your cuppa tea, then this is as close as it gets to camping but with a 5-star twist. Better yet, this style of camping comes with a killer view of the Singapore skyline and Marina Bay. You definitely don’t get a vista quite like that when camping out in the bushes.

At 64m2, the Lil’ Explorers at Camp suite is  massive , featuring a king size bed and an interconnected living (or camp I should say) space that consists of teepees (in which our 2 boys slept soundly), a plush campfire made from cushions and wall art that gives you  all the outdoor nature vibes. But, campsites don’t usually come with 60-inch flatscreen TVs, Nespresso machines, a jacuzzi bathtub and free WiFi. Well, this one does.

In true camping style, we gathered around the campfire, told spooky stories, ‘roasted’ marshmallows, and.. unwinded in the bubble bath after a hard day of explorin’.

We were initially booked into the Marina Family Room, which is fitted with a Queen Bed, bunk bed and amenities designed for kids, but due to construction works occurring on the property at the time, the wonderful team moved our family to the other side of the property and into the ballin’  Monte Carlo suite. What’s even better? We had the infinity pool, kids’ play room and playground directly beneath us. We could’ve literally woken up from our beds, walked onto the balcony and leaped into the water (please don’t try this).

ONE°15 Marina also boasts a well-equipped gym with personal trainers to lend you a hand, an exclusive members’ lounge, arcade room, spa facilities, and even two full size tennis courts. Plus, if you’re game, you can even rent electric scooters on the premises and dash down to the Sentosa beaches and Resorts World attractions.

The hotel is positioned right next to the marina on the west end of Sentosa island. It’s a 5-minute taxi ride to Resorts World and around 15 minutes to central Singapore. You really want to come down this way just to relax, unwind and bask in the scenery before tackling the infinite amount of activities the fun island offers.

The best thing about this place? The free air-conditioned Sentosa Shuttle Bus swings by the front of the resort at regular intervals and stops at all of the major attractions on the island. If you’re particularly motivated, you can also embark on a half hour walk from the resort to the beaches and attractions.
