George Home Cotbed Mattress Protector

asda travel cot mattress protector

At a glance:

This white Mattress Protector is the ideal way to ensure your little cherub gets the soundest night's sleep. The mattress protector fits securely over the cot bed's existing mattress to add a softer layer, making baby more comfortable at night. The mattress protector can also be removed and washed if there are any little accidents for the perfect blend of comfort and convenience.

Would you recommend this to other mums?

Ruth:  I would recommend this product to a fellow mum because it's easy to wash and dry and fits the mattress really well. It is also very soft and completely waterproof. It's nice that it isn't noisy under his sheet. It folds up nice and small so that its easy to keep and put it away in the drawers.

Samantha:  Yes, definitely. I would even say its an essential purchase. It can save you a lot of time and money by not having to replace the whole mattress if there are any accidents. I think it feels really comfortable too. It was so easy to fit and the fit is very tight so you know nothing should get through.

Anneli:  If you have a baby prone to accidents, this is an ideal way to help them through the night without too much disturbance. You can simply change the covers rather than the zip up mattress cover. It is quicker and far less hassle. The size and material are nice. It fits the mattress completely without being tight. Waterproof covers can make your baby hotter due to the plastic layer, however, I don't think this is a major problem with this cover. The price is good and I feel the quality of the product is pretty good.

How did this product make your life easier?

Ashley: This mattress protector makes life easier for any parent. You know that at night time if a nappy leaks or your child is ill, the mattress is protected and you can change the sheets without putting them back into a wet bed. It has a nice soft topping and the whole mattress protector can be put into the washing machine.

Laura:  The value for money is amazing. The protector makes my life easier in the sense that if an accident occurs, the mattress would be well protected. Unfortunately, this wasn't the best item to test during hot weather. In hot weather, it made mattress less breathable and I found the baby sweated more than usual.

Siobhan:  I have never used a mattress protector before this. I used this product and I am really pleased I did. My son has just got to an age where he pulls his nappy off or plays with it which obviously results in a messy bed. By using the mattress protector I have been able to whip all the bedding off to wash it appropriately.

Would you choose this product to win?

Holly:  The price is cheaper than others I have used in the past. I really like the terry towelling feel to it as my previous one was just plastic. This one doesn't rustle which I love as anything wakes up our son!

Nicola:  I would choose this cotbed mattress protector over others currently on the market mainly for the affordable cost. It is a bargain! As well as this, the protector fits very well over our cotbed mattress. My first protector wasn't a great fit and I can really tell a difference when fitting this one. It washes well, is comfortable enough for my baby and if it did become damaged it is cheap enough to buy a new one without breaking the bank. Well done George Home!

Ruth:  I would definitely choose this mattress protector above all others on the market because of the value for money. It is really cheap considering the quality of the mattress protector. I think it should win because it does exactly what it says on the tin and it's very soft to touch. All for only £6...perfect!

What changes would you make to this product?

Samantha:  Nothing really comes to mind for changes. Perhaps they could offer it in a different colour. Although this would only be a cosmetic change. I haven't washed it yet so I can't comment on that. The fit was really good and the material felt a high quality and so far there has been no damage to the mattress.

Anneli:  You could make the packaging slightly nicer or make the fit a bit tighter as the sides are a little baggy. I like the towelling finish and it seems to wash well. You could offer different colour options so it matched with the fitted sheet on top. I'm stretching to find suggestions as to something to change with the design.

Ashley: If I could change one thing about this mattress protector it would be the fit. On the packaging, it states it is for a cot or cot bed. We have a cot bed and I hoped it would be a nice snug fit but it seems very loose. You don't want it to move around when being used in case it makes noise or makes bulges in the bed.

A Guide To Our Travel Cot Mattresses

The same advanced technology and premium materials are utilised in our travel cot mattresses, rendering them indispensable travel companions when journeying with your little one, whether it's a stayover at the Grandparents' or a well-deserved family holiday.

We offer a diverse range of travel cot mattresses on our website, tailored to fit mainstream branded travel cots, allowing you to replace the original mattress. However, if we don't stock the size you require, we are able to craft the specific size you need through our innovative 'build your own mattress' service.

Each travel cot mattress features a folding mechanism, enabling you to easily fold it in half for storage and travel, making it compact and convenient for plane journeys. A zip is located at the back of the mattress, facilitating seamless folding. Your travel cot mattress will arrive folded inside its own fabric storage bag, ensuring it remains dust-free during storage. This folding feature does not compromise the comfort or safety of the mattress.

The accompanying storage bag is essential for keeping your mattress dust-free while not in use.

Regardless of the dimensions required for the travel cot mattress, we offer two premium mattress fillings to choose from. For safety reasons, we are restricted in the fillings we can use, ensuring they do not exceed a depth of 5/7cm, as stipulated by British Safety Standards.

All our travel cot mattresses are expertly crafted by our dedicated artisans, incorporating innovative technology inspired by adult mattresses. You can rest assured that each mattress has been meticulously constructed without the use of any harmful chemicals. We are committed to meeting specifications that comply with the rigorous requirements of BS 1877 Part 10 for safety and performance, as well as BS 7177 for flammability, without employing any antimony, phosphorus, or arsenic-based fire-retardant treatments.

Choosing the right mattress filling for your little one can seem daunting. We often receive inquiries from perplexed parents struggling to determine the suitable mattress core type for them. To simplify the selection process, we have devised a straightforward guide outlining the core types available for our travel cots.

Safe & Snug: The Nursery Bedding Guide

‘Sleep’ is the magic word during the first year of your baby’s life. Not only do babies do most of their growing while they rest, but establishing a manageable sleeping routine will help make your life a whole lot easier.

To maximise their sleep (and yours!) you’re going to need to create a cosy, comfy and safe sleeping environment for your child. From the best cribs and moses baskets to mattress advice and baby bedding do’s and don’ts, our guide has everything you need to welcome your new arrival.

The Sleeping Set-up

The safest place for your little one to sleep is in the same room as you. While they can move into their own nursery after six months, it’s best to have your newborn close by for those precious early stages.

To ensure you both get the rest you need, spend some time choosing the right sleeping essentials. Since comfort starts with the basics, investing in a good-quality crib or moses basket should be your first step.

White cot in a room

Cribs Versus Moses Baskets

Luckily, there’s no right or wrong choice when it comes to cribs and moses baskets. Although many parents prefer moses baskets due to their compact size, cribs can be used for longer since they have a larger space allowance.

Whichever bed you pick, don’t forget to upgrade your child to a cot as soon as they can sit up unaided.

Baby Mattress Tips

The mattress you choose not only determines the quality of your baby’s sleep, but it also helps keep them safe. As well as picking a firm and flat mattress, make sure it fits the crib perfectly without any gaps. If you’re reusing a crib, buy a new mattress to guarantee its condition.

As with all baby necessities, waterproof styles are another key feature to look out for!

What Bedding Should A Baby Have?

Once you’ve mastered the basics, it’s time to prepare your baby’s bedding . With so much choice available, this part can get a little complicated!

So, if you’re wondering where to begin, we’ve provided some do’s and don’ts to ensure your child is safe while they sleep.

Do… Stock Up

Every new parent knows that if there’s a baby around, clothing and bedding won’t stay clean for long! Similar to stocking up on bodysuits, it’s a good idea to have at least four sheets at the ready.

To make changing your baby’s bedding a breeze, opt for fitted sheets . Easy to put on and fast to pull off, you’ll be a baby bed making pro before you know it. Plus, fitted sheets will stay in place for even the most active sleepers.

You can also create your own bedding by dividing a double sheet into crib-sized squares. It’s a case of the more the merrier when it comes to extra sheets!

White star print sheets

Do… Add Blankets

Light blankets are a great option to insulate your child. Even so, any sheets or blankets you do use should be tucked below your baby’s shoulder level for care and comfort purposes.

Don’t… Use Pillows & Duvets

While blankets get the green light, anything bulky is a no-go. Duvets and pillows shouldn’t be added to your baby’s bed – especially if your child is under one year old.

If you’re worried about keeping your child warm, use a baby sleeping bag to help them stay snug.

Do… Monitor The Temperature

Babies sleep best in rooms between 16-20°C. With this in mind, it’s important to make sure your baby doesn’t overheat.

We recommend using a room thermometer to monitor the temperature alongside steering clear of hot water bottles.

Don’t… Forget A Baby Monitor

You can’t put a price on peace of mind. As well as having your baby in your room for the first six months, don’t forget to invest in a baby monitor .

For extra reassurance, why not try a digital video and movement monitor? This way you can be sure your baby is safe and sound.

Tommee Tippee digital video and movement monitor

Do… Buy Adorable All In Ones

Preparing your child’s bedding is also the ideal opportunity to start selecting adorable all in ones and bodysuits . After all, beautiful bedding deserves beautiful baby clothing.

For gender-less options that can be used time and time again, opt for unisex baby clothing . From super-soft sleepsuits to must-have bibs and muslin squares , you can have fun planning their very first wardrobe.

Keep your baby clean and comfortable with our changing and bathing collections, including baths and bath toys , changing necessities and hooded towels .

The Best Waterproof Mattress Protectors and Pads

Jackie Reeve

By Jackie Reeve

Jackie Reeve is a writer covering all things bedding. She has also reported on towels, rugs, and chicken coops (with help from her 20 backyard pets).

If you want to shield a mattress from spills, potty training accidents, or pet messes, we recommend the SafeRest Premium Mattress Protector .

After 240 hours researching and testing 14 protectors, we found the SafeRest did the best job at keeping our mattress dry, while also feeling comfortable to sleep on.

And after multiple washes, it retained its waterproofing better than almost any other protector we tried.

Everything we recommend

asda travel cot mattress protector

SafeRest Premium Mattress Protector

The best waterproof mattress protector.

This inexpensive fitted mattress protector is one of the few that stayed fully waterproof through our tests. It’s comfortable to sleep on and inexpensive.

Buying Options

asda travel cot mattress protector

Priva Ultra Plus Sheet Protector

A waterproof pad.

If you want something that’s easier to put on and take off the bed, the Priva Ultra Plus outperformed other mattress pads we tested.

asda travel cot mattress protector

Linenspa Waterproof Sheet Protector

A better pad for kids.

We like this travel-friendly, easy-to-change mattress pad for kids because it’s made with safer polyurethane instead of vinyl.

The SafeRest Premium Mattress Protector is one of the few protectors we tested that never failed, staying completely waterproof through 10 cycles of washing and drying and two leak tests. It’s affordable and highly recommended in user reviews (and from our staffers who’ve owned it). We think it’s great for a child’s bed, and we recommend having at least two on hand to swap out if needed. The cotton/polyester terry top is a little noisy and it’s scratchier than pricier quilted protectors, but we don’t think that’s a big deal because it goes underneath the sheets, not against the skin. The SafeRest comes in twin to California king sizes.

Although fitted protectors are better at staying put on the bed, waterproof pads are easier to add or remove and simpler to wash because they’re smaller. Of the three we looked at, the Priva Ultra Plus Sheet Protector is the only pad that aced our leak tests. Available in three sizes (none as big as a twin mattress), it’s a great option if you need concentrated leak protection for one side of the bed. The Priva is backed with vinyl, and though the manufacturer says the vinyl is phthalate-free , we were unable to get independent, third-party verification of this at the time of this writing. For children and pregnant women, we recommend the polyurethane Linenspa protector.

Though it’s not as effective at fending off leaks for as long as the Priva pad, the Linenspa Waterproof Sheet Protector is backed with polyurethane, which doesn’t pose the potential developmental health risks that vinyl does, so we think it’s a better bet for kids and pregnant women. It stayed waterproof through some of our testing, but will need to be replaced more frequently than the Priva (probably at least once during a child’s potty training years). The Linenspa is comfy to sleep on, comes in three sizes, and is convenient to have on hand for intense, short-term needs, like potty training, sick days with kids, or travel.

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, how we picked and tested, our pick: saferest premium mattress protector, flaws but not dealbreakers, also great: priva ultra plus sheet protector, also great: linenspa waterproof sheet protector, care and maintenance, the competition.

I’ve written many guides for Wirecutter, including reviews of sheets , robes , towels , and blankets . I’ve also been through tough potty training as a mom, and have had several waterproof mattress protectors fail. It’s frustrating and expensive, so I researched and tested these protectors for what I wish I’d had (and known) when we were going through it.

If you want to prevent leaks or spills from ruining your mattress, you probably need a mattress protector—a waterproof pad or fitted sheet that goes on top of your mattress. A protector is not only helpful when you’re potty training kids, it can also defend your mattress against spilled beverages, sweat, adult incontinence, pet accidents, and other bodily fluids. If you want to protect yourself from bedbug infestations and dust mite allergies you should instead consider a mattress encasement (which seals the mattress inside).

A close up of a person pulling a mattress protector over a mattress.

We spoke to Jamie Glowacki —potty training educator and author of Oh Crap! Potty Training —about protecting a mattress during potty training. Shannon Palus, author of several Wirecutter guides, spoke to Lakelyn Hogan, a gerontologist and caregiver advocate for Home Instead Senior Care , about what to consider when caring for elderly relatives. Harrison King, VP of engineering and quality at manufacturer American Textile Company , told us why waterproof protectors sometimes fail.

We spoke to experts, read user reviews and parenting blogs, and talked to our staff to find out what the most important features are in a mattress protector. We checked Amazon’s top sellers, took recommendations from our staff, researched offerings from bedding companies whose products we’ve tested in the past, and looked at protectors in stores, compiling a list of 36 products.

Our research helped us to determine the following criteria that make a great mattress protector:

Durable protection: A protector should stop leaks from reaching your mattress. Surprisingly, we found many user reviews complaining about protectors failing to do this, even out of the package. They also have a limited life span. If you wash and dry one enough times, the waterproofing will fail. According to King, one reason for this is the breakdown of the adhesive that attaches the polyurethane—the waterproof material used in many protectors—to the fabric top. “Different adhesives have varying levels of durability,” he said, “and some degrade more quickly.” Frequent washing, and drying on high heat, can accelerate that degradation. “Leading retailers require independent testing that proves effectiveness after multiple (5+) launderings,” King said. You could easily blow through five washes in a month potty training a toddler. King also noted that thinner, less effective laminates are sometimes used because they’re less stiff and make less noise. We looked for protectors with the most positive reviews, and we used staff feedback for our test picks wherever possible.

Safe materials: In our research we noted many concerns from parents about vinyl protectors, although one manufacturer told us its vinyl protectors are more waterproof than its polyurethane options. There is evidence that phthalates (added to some plastics, including PVC vinyl) can cause health problems in pregnant women and children, and several phthalates are restricted from use in products aimed at kids. Wherever possible we looked at materials like polyurethane and natural fibers first, and then also considered vinyl if it was phthalate-free.

Fitted and pad protectors: We focused on fitted and pad protectors because they received the highest user reviews. Fitted protectors look like a fitted sheet with a waterproof top and stretchy jersey sides. They provide good protection, and don’t shift on the bed. Pads are smaller and don’t attach to the bed (and thus can shift more). They’re better for targeted spills, potty training, and bed sharing because you can swap them in and out more easily. We passed on pads with elastic straps at the corners, like the toddler-bed-size ones at IKEA , because they didn’t get great reviews. We also looked at mattress encasements, which go around the entire mattress, but they’re generally better for protecting against bedbugs or dust mites .

Comfortable: Because these protectors are a barrier between your sheets and your mattress, we wanted to make sure they felt good to sleep on. No overheating, no bunching, no sliding around on the bed. We paid attention to complaints of discomfort in user reviews.

A wide range of sizes: A mattress protector is helpful for any size bed, so we looked for models that come in a range of sizes, including crib and California king.

Affordable price: It’s handy to own more than one protector for a bed, so you can swap out a clean one at any hour without needing to do laundry right away. We focused on protectors that were affordable enough (less than $50 for a queen) to buy multiples. We considered more expensive protectors if user reviews indicated they perform well and offer extra comfort to be worth the additional investment.

Based on this criteria, we brought in 14 protectors to test. We measured each, then washed and dried them five times, following the care instructions on each label. Next we measured them again and calculated any shrinkage, and we laid them out for our first leak test.

For the leak tests, we placed a thick layer of paper towels under a specific spot in each protector and then poured 2 cups of water with food coloring on that spot. We weighted the wet section down with a 1-pound bag of beans and left the protectors alone for an hour to see if any liquid would soak through. Then we removed the paper towels and noted any moisture that had leaked through. We also felt the backs of the protectors for wetness.

Only the protectors that were bone dry after this first test moved on, and the list narrowed from 14 protectors to six. We washed and dried them all five more times and repeated the liquid tests, but we left them soaking for two hours this time. After the second leak test, three protectors were left completely dry.

We then slept a night each on those three protectors to assess how comfortable they were to use.

A close up of a mattress with our pick for best mattress pad on it.

The SafeRest Premium Mattress Protector was one of only three protectors we tested that stayed waterproof through all our testing. Its thin, soft material makes it more comfortable to sleep on than most of the protectors we considered, and it doesn’t bunch like our pad picks. The SafeRest is easier to wash than our upgrade pick, and it dries faster than any of our other picks. Like most of the protectors we considered, it comes in a wide range of sizes (including twin XL and California king), and it’s more affordable than other protectors we tested that didn’t perform as well in our tests.

The SafeRest is the thinnest of all our picks, but in our testing it was one of only three whose waterproofing held completely after 10 cycles of machine washing warm and drying on low, leaving the back of the protector and the layer of paper towels underneath completely dry. The top is constructed of a cotton/polyester-blend terry with polyurethane laminated backing.

We liked that the SafeRest didn’t add extra weight or bulk under the sheets, like many pads and quilted protectors do, and that it can be stretched virtually as smooth and taut as the sheets on the bed. The terry texture doesn’t show through sheets either. We didn’t notice it through the night, and it didn’t make us overheat.

A close up of the terry texture on the top of our pick for best mattress pad.

The SafeRest feels more like a sheet than the thicker, stiffer protectors we tried. This made it easier to wash than the more expensive protectors in our test group. Even the king size we tested fits in the machine with other wash, while higher-end protectors, made with quilted layers of material, must be machine washed alone. The stains from our leak tests came out easily in the wash (our upgrade pick took a few tries), and this protector dried quickly.

The SafeRest fits true to size on a king bed. It also shrank the least of our picks (only about 0.5 percent on average, compared with 2.6 percent for The Company Store’s quilted protector and 1.2 percent for the Priva pad). The SafeRest is intended for use on mattresses up to 14 inches deep, and we tested it on a 10-inch foam mattress but didn’t notice much excess fabric along the sides when making the bed.

Like most of the mattress protectors we considered, the SafeRest could fail over time. We’ll long-term test it to see how long the waterproofing lasts. This protector also comes with a 10-year warranty . A few of our staffers have used and recommend the SafeRest, and online reviewers note that it can survive lots of urine , is breathable , and fits mattress depths of 12 to 14 inches . Some write that it has lasted well over a year , even with weekly washing . For the price (about a quarter of the cost of our upgrade pick for queen size) we think the SafeRest is an all-around great value.

We noticed that this protector seems to have a lot of fake reviews on Amazon, and for the twin and full sizes it has a C rating on Fakespot (the reviews for the queen and king sizes get a B rating). Because some of our staff have used this protector successfully, we decided to include it in testing. As with most of the waterproof protectors we considered, there are reviews noting it failed to protect the mattress from leaks and spills. Verified negative reviews noted that it’s not breathable , and that it’s noisy to sleep on. It is thin and thus tends to move and rustle more than our other picks, but it didn’t bother us while we slept.

The Priva Ultra Plus Sheet Protector laid out on a mattress.

The Priva Ultra Plus Sheet Protector is easier to use than our main pick for quick bed changes because it’s a pad and not a fitted protector. You can place it under the sheets, or use it on top of the fitted sheet, precluding the need to strip the bed if it gets soiled. But it won’t protect your entire bed, like our main pick, and it’s more likely to bunch up than a fitted pad. We also don’t recommend this pad for kids or pregnant women, because of the vinyl backing.

We tested three pads, and the Priva was the only one that retained its waterproof ability through all of our tests. It’s softer than our top pick, with a thicker, quilted surface, and it’s almost as easy to launder—it took a little longer to dry than the SafeRest—because of its smaller size. It’s also nice if you sleep with a partner and need extra protection on only one side of the bed, rather than the full-bed protection of our top and upgrade picks.

The Priva’s top is a cotton/polyester blend, and it’s soft and cool to sleep on (although none of our picks overheated us at night). Its thin layer of polyester fill makes it softer and less flimsy than some of the fitted protectors we tried.

A close up of a person lifting up a corner of the Priva protector pad to show the material underneath.

The Priva was comfortable to sleep on, but it did bunch a little in the night. Not so much that it moved away from the body, making the mattress vulnerable, but just enough that we woke up with a slight lump under our back. (This was also an issue with the Linenspa pad.) The Priva comes in three sizes: 18 by 22 inches, 24 by 34 inches, and 34 by 52 inches. We tested the largest size, which provides sufficient coverage under an adult body.

We haven’t tested Priva’s claim that this pad can survive 300 washes and hold up to 8 cups of liquid, but we do think it can handle the output from an average adult bladder ( about 2 cups ), and after 10 washes it showed no sign of leaking—which was better than the other pads we tried. We like that it’s portable, easy to wash, and less wasteful than disposable pads. Fiberlinks, the manufacturer of Priva, told us that no phthalates are used in the production of the vinyl for this pad, but because we couldn’t verify current third-party testing to confirm that at the time of this writing we recommend the Linenspa Waterproof Sheet Protector for kids and pregnant women.

The Linenspa sheet protector spread out on a mattress.

The Linenspa Waterproof Sheet Protector did not perform as well as the Priva pad in our tests, but we think it’s a safer option for kids and pregnant women because it’s backed with polyurethane. It also costs a little less. The Linenspa protector remained completely dry after our first leak tests, but after our second leak test the protector’s back and the paper towels underneath felt ever-so-slightly damp. It didn’t fail completely, but we don’t think it will last as long as the Priva. Some online reviewers note that the protector has worked for six months with daily laundering, and for more than a year with weekly washing. It’s inexpensive to replace, and we like a pad protector for kids because you can change it without removing all their bedding. It’s also convenient for travel, and it’s great for sick days when you want to protect a couch or a bed.

The Linenspa also comes in three sizes: 34 by 36 inches, 34 by 52 inches (the size we tested), and 44 by 52 inches. If you’re an adult looking for a mattress pad and want something roomier than the Priva, the Linenspa’s largest size may be a good option. We think that extra coverage works for a crib, toddler, or twin bed, especially if your kids tend to travel the mattress at night.

A close up of a person lifting up a corner of the Linenspa mattress protector to show the soft material underneath.

The Linenspa’s soft top is a cotton/polyester blend with a layer of synthetic fill. It was very comfortable to sleep on, but like the Priva it can bunch at night. Both pads we recommend shift around more than our fitted-sheet-style picks. The Linenspa is softer than the Priva and the SafeRest, and on the bed we didn’t hear any rustling at all, so we don’t think it will interfere with sleep. The Linenspa does not come with a warranty.

Following the care instructions on your mattress protector’s label is key to prolonging its life and preventing the waterproof backing from failing. For our top-pick protector, the SafeRest, the label says to wash it on warm (95 degrees Fahrenheit) or hot (200 ºF), but it can be sanitized up to 212 ºF. We recommend washing it that hot only if you actually need to sanitize it, not for everyday use and wear. The instructions for every protector we tested said to tumble dry on low, and we read several user reviews from people who prefer to air dry it to help it last longer.

Mattress protectors don’t need to be washed as frequently as sheets, especially if you put them under your sheets. Harrison King, of American Textile Company, told us that if you don’t have leaks or spills on your bed, you need to wash a protector only three to four times a year.

Fitted protectors

The Weekender Hotel-Grade 5-sided Mattress Protector has a smooth, T-shirt-like jersey surface instead of the terry used for several protectors we considered, and among fitted protectors, it came in third after our main and upgrade picks, leaving the paper towels underneath just slightly damp after our leak tests.

The Luna Premium Mattress Protector was completely dry on the back after our first leak test, but on the second, the waterproofing failed and soaked the paper towels underneath.

Malouf’s Sleep Tite Prime Mattress Protector was a staff recommendation. In the first leak test it failed in one spot, leaving a small (about 1 inch in diameter) wet spot on the paper towel barrier underneath.

The Casper Mattress Protector shrunk significantly—just over 10 percent, more than any other model we tested—after washing and drying, which could make fit an issue. Also, in our first leak test it left the paper towel barrier damp.

The Weekender Jersey Mattress Protector stretched out in the wash, enough that it would fit poorly on a mattress, and it was also damp (but not soaking) after our first leak test.

NaturePedic’s Organic Waterproof Fitted Protector Pad is made without any vinyl or polyurethane, the most common waterproof materials we found. After our first leak test the bottom felt wet and the paper towels were damp.

The Malouf Sleep Tite 5-Sided Mattress Protector failed completely in our first leak test, soaking the paper towels underneath.

Sealy’s Luxury Knit Waterproof Waterproof Stain-Release Mattress Protector also completely soaked the paper towels underneath during the first leak test.

We considered but didn’t test the Lucid Mattress Protector , PureCare StainGuard Waterproof Mattress Protector , and Lucid Rayon from Bamboo Jersey Mattress Protector because the reviews were mixed, or they had too few reviews.

Liquid soaked through the Royal Heritage Home Saddle Style Waterproof Mattress Protector and the paper towels under it in our first leak test.

Our former upgrade pick, The Company Store’s Waterproof Mattress Pad, is now discontinued.

Encasements

The Allearease Zippered Mattress Protector is the only encasement we tested for this guide, and it left a 6-inch wet spot on the paper towels during the first leak test.

After our picks, keep reading to learn more about how we test mattress protectors and what to keep in mind while shopping. Looking for added cushioning rather than purely protection? Check out our favorite mattress pads .

A five-sided protector simplifies bed-making and cleanup: It goes on your bed like a fitted sheet, so you can easily remove it after spills and put it back on after launderin g . This one from Coop Home Goods checks all the boxes of a great waterproof mattress protector. And on top of that, it's got a plush, cool-to-the-touch top layer. One analyst even commented, "I immediately noticed how soft it was compared to the other mattress protectors."

Tester notes: Beyond its comfortable feel, we found that the waterproof backing wasn't noisy when crinkled. However, the mesh side panels didn't feel as sturdy as other protectors we tested. In the Lab, it washed well with minimal shrinkage and aced our water-repellency tests. No water seeped through from the top layer to the back.

Boasting over 270,000 reviews (including over 210,000 five-star ratings), this mattress protector has undoubtedly kept many beds safe from spills and leaks. The top is covered in a terrycloth fabric designed to absorb moisture quickly, and a waterproof underlayer helps keep your mattress dry.

Tester notes: One product expert at GH uses this protector on her kid's bed and credits it for saving their mattress during illness. She says, "It's very easy to get on [thanks to the] stretchy side panels and very quiet." Still, keep in mind that some online reviewers found that the protector can get hot when sleeping.

For maximum coverage, look for an encasement-style mattress protector, which completely covers the entire mattress. This one from AllerEase has a zipper with a velcro cover specifically designed to keep out bed bugs by preventing them from being able to crawl in through the zipper opening. The brand also claims it can protect against dust mites and other allergens.

Tester notes: While putting on an encasement-style protector can be harder (especially since you'll need to lift your mattress), one tester found it worth it. They commented, "I have dust mite allergies and appreciate the peace of mind, even if it takes extra time to get the protector on my bed after laundering." During our in-Lab tests, we found it wicked moisture with ease, without allowing it to seep through onto the mattress. We found the protective material was loud, so it may make some noise when moving around in bed.

The best defense against toddler leaks is a well-fitted and absorbent diaper . But, if there's an accident, spit-up or other spills during the night, a good mattress protector can make cleaning up a breeze. This protector from My Green Mattress is available in a wide range of sizes, including a crib size, and it's made with GOTS-certified organic cotton.

Tester notes: It didn't leak during our water-repellency evaluations in the Lab, but it did shrink a bit after laundering. Our experts loved using this protector for their children's beds with one noting, "I like how it uses mostly organic materials." Testers also liked that it didn't make noise. Plus, one consumer tester even commented, "You don't even know it's there."

If you run warm at night, you know this problem all too well: You try to use a mattress protector to extend the life of your mattress, but, in turn, you spend your nights sweating from the lack of breathability. Luckily, this cooling protector from Airley is made with soft and breathable Tencel on top of waterproof material . Its stretchy side panels also provide a secure fit on a range of mattress sizes.

Tester notes : Our consumer testers unanimously agreed that this protector stayed quiet and helped keep them at a comfortable body temperature. One called it "unnoticeable," while another said they experienced "no plastic-y sounds when moving." A third tester noted, "It kept me cool and dry, which I loved." Still, while most found it fit well on their beds, one tester with a short mattress noted the depth felt loose.

More waterproof mattress protectors to consider

line break

We've rounded up the best of the waterproof mattress protectors we've tested, but here are other great performers from our evaluations to keep in mind.

GoodMorning.com Mattress Protector : Earning the title of the quietest mattress protector we've tested, this five-sided protector made very little noise when we crumpled the fabric. Water didn't seep through, but smooth viscose fabric proved too smooth for some testers whose sheets slipped off the bed.

SlumberCloud Core Mattress Protector : SlumberCloud's cooling mattress protector uses moisture-wicking Tencel and Outlast technology, which stores and releases heat throughout the night to keep you at a stable, comfortable temperature. It held up well in our tests, keeping out water, but is now on final sale.

Saatva Waterproof Mattress Protector : Made of cotton with a 16-inch depth, this pick from Saatva showed less shrinkage than other cotton protectors. It also has a silicone band along the elastic edge to help prevent shifting. Like our other picks, it kept water from seeping through, but the waterproof backing made a noticeable sound in our tests.

Naturepedic Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector : This protector was the softest in our test. It's made of organic knit cotton jersey with an in-between waterproof barrier. In our tests, water seeped through the knit top, but the inner layer prevented any moisture from seeping through to the back. Note that the fabric was louder than others we tester.

How we test waterproof mattress protectors

listicle

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we extensively test all types of bedding, including comforters , sheets , pillows , mattress toppers , mattress protectors and more to ensure that you can create the best, most comfortable bed possible for a great night's sleep. GH Lab experts recently tested 15 waterproof mattress protectors and analyzed them for performance and durability, reviewing over 300 data points to make these picks .

a lab analyst is pouring water onto a mattress protector from a beaker to analyze water repellency for good housekeeping's best waterproof mattress protectors

To ensure that the mattress protectors were actually waterproof, we conducted a spill test simulation in Lab. Our Lab pros lined a tray with absorbent blotting paper, weighed the tray for later comparison, and then covered the tray with material from a mattress protector. Next, a set amount of distilled water, similar to a standard spill, was poured onto the mattress protector ( pictured ). After three minutes, the protector was removed and the tray was weighed again. The more water that soaked through the mattress protector and into the absorbent blotting paper below, the less waterproof the protector proved to be.

Our Lab experts also put each mattress protector through repeated wash testing to see how well the protectors withstood regular laundering and to analyze if they were able to resist shrinkage in the dryer. Lab analysts crinkled each protector together to mimic any noise it way make when in use and rated how soft the protector felt.

Lastly, we sent some of these picks to consumer testers for real-life use. They shared feedback on ease of bed making, comfort, mattress fit, sound and more.

What to look for when shopping for waterproof mattress protectors

✔️ Material: Waterproof mattress protectors are all designed with some sort of waterproofing material, and most are encased in a second material for added comfort or better performance.

  • Polyurethane: This is the material that gives most mattress protectors their waterproof abilities. It's a type of plastic that acts as a moisture barrier but can be noisy and uncomfortable to sleep on if not encased in another material.
  • Cotton: Cotton is a natural fiber that can be woven into durable moisture-wicking fabrics or knit into softer stretch fabrics that, when paired with a waterproof lining, can help keep you comfortable and protected while you sleep.
  • Tencel: Tencel is a silky smooth fiber that can feel cool to the touch. It's a popular pick for cooling waterproof mattress protectors. It is a great choice if you're a hot sleeper.
  • Terrycloth: Terrycloth isn't a fiber but it's a type of fabric (usually cotton) that is woven with little loops of extra yarns that allow for extra absorbency from spills.

✔️ Protection: A mattress protector can be a full encasement cover or a five-sided cover.

  • Encasement waterproof mattress protectors completely cover a mattress on all sides, including the bottom. You slide the cover over your mattress and then zip it shut for maximum coverage from spills. Some offer bed bug protection too.
  • A five-sided cover, on the other hand, fits on the bed like a fitted sheet, leaving the bottom of the mattress exposed. These covers are usually easier to remove than full encasements and can be taken off quickly when an accident happens.

Red Kite Sleeptight travel cot review: 'Still going strong 10 years later!'

Red Kite's low-cost travel cot is probably one of the best kept secrets in travel cot terms. Simple in design, it gives its more expensive counterparts a run for their money. We put it through its paces with two parent-testers.

How we tested the Red Kite Sleeptight Travel Cot

I first purchased the Red Kite Sleeptight Travel Cot over ten years ago when my first child was a newborn. Since then it has been used by two further babies/toddlers over several family holidays during a period of around seven years (until our youngest outgrew it). We primarily used it as a cot, but it would certainly be big enough to use as a playpen as well.

The Red Kite Sleeptight was also tested by parent-tester Ruth, who tried it out with her 18-month-old over a period of several months. During this time the travel cot was thoroughly put through its paces, withstanding rigorous rolling around, pushing against the sides and bouncing.

How safe is the Red Kite Sleeptight?

While this travel cot is one of the cheapest on the market, it certainly doesn’t scrimp on quality.

The Red Kite Sleeptight’s simple design and thoughtful features, including padded rails and mesh side panels, ensures baby is safe at all times.

It is both durable and child-proof with the frame and corners covered well by fabric. There are also no zips or choking hazards, and no gaps where a child’s fingers could become trapped.

The Sleeptight is also fire retardant and there is a locking system on each side of the frame which means that the travel cot is sturdy when upright. The frame cannot be released until the buttons are pressed, which requires a good amount of pressure – more than any small child could manage.

The cot is a bit wider than other travel cots on the market such as the Joie Kubbie Sleep, so there is plenty of room inside for a child up until they are three years old – or until they can climb out.

How easy is the Red Kite Sleeptight to assemble?

While the Sleeptight uses a standard cot mechanism for assembly, I always found there was a bit of a knack to it. You have to remember to pull up and lock each side of the frame before pushing down the centre of the cot to lock it in. Then you can lay and strap the mattress into place with the velcro straps.

The cot comes in two parts, with the mattress wrapping around the cot to keep it a compact, rectangular shape which fits easily in the carry case.

The same level of assembly is needed every time and it is just as quick and easy to fold down as it is to get up. The frame is released by pushing the buttons, and then you pull it up from the centre.

Although the Sleeptight is wider than some of the other travel cots in our guide and has no wheels for transportation around the house, its 8.5 kg weight still makes it easy to carry around - though I probably wouldn't want to do so for any length of time!

How does it look?

The fabric is made mostly of cotton and is black in colour with white, breathable mesh that makes it easy for parent and baby to see in and out. The material also comes in Blueberry, Raspberry and Grey if you’d prefer a lighter colour.

While it does sit at the lower end of the price range, its sleek design and well-finished detailing still gives the likes of the BabyBjorn Easy Go and Joie Kubbie Sleep a run for their money.

It's wide frame may make placing it in a smaller room a bit tricky (and we certainly found it a bit of a challenge when we took it camping!) but the up side of this is that is there is more space for your child to grow.

What is the Red Kite travel cot mattress like?

The only downside of the Red Kit Sleeptight travel cot is the mattress' thinness. Having said that, my eldest daughter slept perfectly well in it for several years and we only bought an extra mattress - this one from Mother Nurture - several years later when my second-born used the Red Kite.

Parent-tester Jenny

Red Kite Sleeptight Travel Cot

Ruth, too, said that she invested in an extra mattress.

We bought an extra foldable mattress, which makes it comfier, as we do a fair few weekends away. DS is too big for the cot now, but we still use the mattress with the base from the travel cot when we go away.

-parent-tester Ruth

What's it like to use day-to-day?

This is definitely a cot that can be used as a place to nap if you are away on a family holiday or at a grandparent’s house.

Ruth's son slept in the Sleeptight when she went away with her family for the weekend and, although it was difficult finding a spot in the small hotel room, she managed to put it at the foot of the bed.

It is a bit bulky to move around when set up so would need to be collapsed to fit through most doorways. But it would take less than a minute to set it up again elsewhere.

When it’s folded down, it’s compact and goes into a black carry case which makes it easy to transport and to store. It would slot nicely into a cupboard or in the boot of the car, although it may be too large to take onto a plane as hand luggage.

It’s also spacious enough when assembled to be used as a playpen for a younger child as they would have room to play with toys and move around.

Related : Don't miss our guides to the best bunk beds , mattresses and baby sleeping bags

How easy is it to clean?

Unfortunately the covers aren’t removable and the mattress doesn’t come with a sheet so everything needs to be spot cleaned with mild detergent and warm water before left to air dry.

Ruth placed her son in the cot with peanut butter on his finger which he smeared all over the top of the frame. She found it much easier to clean if she got to the muck quickly with a damp cloth (rather than leaving it to stain), and the fact that the cot is predominately black meant that any dirt didn't show up much, even if cleaning didn't remove it entirely. The metal legs can also be cleaned with damp cloth.

However, she found cleaning the white mesh a lot trickier as dirt did become ingrained into the fabric. As such, the mesh could start to look fairly mucky over time, especially if the travel cot is used as a playpen as well as somewhere for baby to sleep.

Does the Red Kite Sleeptight represent good value for money?

It may be our budget choice, but the Red Kite Sleeptight works just as well as the more expensive travel cots we tested.

While it is fairly no frills in terms of overall aesthetic and the covers aren't machine-washable, it offers good longevity and, in our opinion, great value for money.

Red Kite Sleeptight: final verdict

There aren't many baby items we purchased for our first child which have stood the test of time and are still good to use more than 10 years later - the Red Kite Sleeptight travel cot is one of few. It's not the fanciest travel cot you can buy - there's no bassinet attachment for very young babies, there aren't any wheels on the legs and it is quite wide, but if you need a travel cot which costs less than £40 and can be used as and when you need it, the Red Kite Sleeptight is still a great option. It's robust, affordable, easy to assemble and provides a comfortable and safe environment for both sleep and play - really, what more can you ask for?
