Discover Indonesia: Borneo, Java & Bali

Discover Indonesia: Borneo, Java & Bali

This Kalimantan & Java Bali overland adventure includes a number of the country's highlights and hidden gems. Indonesian archipelago spreads over 5200km between the Asian mainland and Australia, all of it within the tropics, and comprises 17,000 islands. Its ethnic, cultural and linguistic diversity is correspondingly great – more than 500 languages and dialects are spoken by its 246 million people, whose fascinating customs and lifestyles are a major attraction. The largely volcanic nature of the islands has created tall cloud-swept mountains swathed in the green of rice terraces or rainforest, dropping to blindingly bright beaches and vivid blue seas, the backdrop for Southeast Asia’s biggest wilderness areas and wildlife sanctuaries. All of this provides an endless resource for adventurous trekking, surfing, scuba diving, or just lounging by the pool.

Jakarta, Java

The sprawling capital of the world's most populous island, Jakarta concentrates all of Indonesia's diversity and energy into one bustling city. With more than 300 different ethnic groups speaking 750 different languages, Indonesia's capital - Jakarta is a diverse mix of fascinating history and culture.

Day 2: Jakarta - Pangkalanbun - Tanjung Puting

Jakarta - Pangkalanbun - Tanjung Puting

  • Transportation: Airport Transfers
  • Transportation (Air): Domestic Flight
  • Tour: River Cruise & Orangutans
  • Accommodation: Klotok Riverboat
  • Meals: B, L, D

This morning, you will be met and transferred to the airport for your direct flight to Pangkalanbun, Kalimantan, which is the closest airport to Tanjung Puting National Park.

River Cruise & Orangutans

On arrival in Pangkalunbun, meet your guide and driver and transfer to the Kumai River Harbor to board a traditional klotok—a flat-bottomed riverboat. Cruise through this bustling river port, passing shipyards where Makassar schooners are handcrafted from tropical hardwoods. Continue the cruise upriver, through forests that provide habitat for many species of birds and monkeys. Experience the vibrant life along the riverfront—take in scenes of people scaling fish, washing babies, fishing, repairing boats and curious local children waving as you pass. During your time here, you will visit the three ranger stations at Tanjung Puting National Park—the orangutan camp at Tanjung Haraphan, Camp Leakey and Pondok Tanggui. Here, you will more than likely encounter several of the resident ex-captive orangutans that roam within the grounds of the research camp. There will be multiple opportunities to see orangutan feedings at various sites. When your guide calls out the whooping sound to announce the feeding, you will begin to hear the rustle of leaves and then experience the heart-pounding moment when these great apes swing toward you.  After checking in at your lodge, if time permits, depart by boat to the Tanjung Haraphan and hike to the feeding platform for your first chance to view these beautiful creatures in the wild. Return back to the boat and continue on to observe and learn more about proboscis monkeys along the river banks. Proboscis monkeys are endemic and can only be seen in Borneo.

Tanjung Puting National Park, Kalimantan

Tanjung Puting National Park is located in the Indonesian province of Central Kalimantan. The park is famous for it's resident ape - the orangutan. Here you can explore the variety of ecosystems found within the Indonesian Borneo rain forest and visit the rehabilitation center at the landmark Camp Leakey research station to get a closer look at these incredible creatures!

Day 3: Tanjung Puting

Tanjung Puting

  • Tour: Camp Leakey & River Cruise Continued

Camp Leakey & River Cruise Continued

Start each day bright and early with your guide to be on the river at prime wildlife viewing times. See playful proboscis monkeys bounding through the trees. These large primates, whose pendulous noses give them a comic appearance, are found only in isolated areas of Borneo. See majestic hornbills flying low over the jungle canopy, leaf-eating macaques and the occasional wild orangutan. A river journey in Borneo is a travel classic, mysterious and wondrous—at times the river narrows to the point that passage may seem to be in doubt.  This morning, visit Camp Leakey, founded in 1971 by Dr. Birute Galdikas for the study and conservation of orangutans. Like Jane Goodall's work with chimpanzees and Dian Fossey's with gorillas, Dr. Galdikas' hands-on approach to researching orangutans—she has lived for decades in this jungle—has resulted in a profoundly influential body of work.  This afternoon, hike to the Pondok Tanggui feeding platform. If interested, take a nighttime river cruise to see the fireflies along the river.

You will continue your stroll through Ubud's quaint lanes, towards the verdant dew-covered rice fields north of Ubud. Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, tanjung puting – the beginnings of an eco-adventure.

From the plane, you can look down and see the snaking figure of the Sekonyer River rushing against the edges of the city of Pangkalan Bun. Homes rise out of the banks on stilts accounting for the rising waters during months of tropical rain. A boardwalk runs along the banks, allowing visitors and locals to enjoy views of the rushing river and life alongside the water. Colorful boats use the current to speed across town, and larger vessels transport goods downstream. Your private transfer meets you upon your flight's arrival at Iskandar Airport. The tropical warmth greets you outside the airport doors, set amidst the bustling city.

You venture to the Kumai Harbor with a quick introduction into the thriving river life circulating along the riverbank. Canoes and large fishing boats moor in the harbor, highlighting the importance of river life to central Borneo. You board a comfortable klotok, a traditional Indonesian riverboat consisting of a shallow draft measuring an average of 33 feet long. You follow the waters of a small tributary connected to the Kumai River. The bustling movement of the harbor fades to serene jungle surroundings. The scent of freshwater blends with the aroma of fresh wood drifting upwards from the boat.

The skipper explains there are over 230 types of birds in the Tanjung Putting National Park, an area encompassing more than 1,600 square miles. You can hear the echoing twitter of colorful kingfisher roaming the riverbanks. The skipper points to a false gharial basking in the sunlight on the shoreline. The freshwater crocodile can grow to nearly 13 feet long. The journey up the winding tributary feels like something out of an adventure book. You arrive at the stunning eco-friendly lodge and settle into the comforts of your room overlooking the gentle flow of the Sekonyer River.

What's Included:

Tanjung Puting – In the Presence of the Wilds

At sunrise, the wilds of the surrounding jungle return to life, filling the canopy with calls of proboscis monkeys and twittering flycatchers. The scent of Indonesian coffee fills the air at breakfast, refreshing your senses and reminding you of the adventures to come. You step aboard the riverboat bound for Camp Leakey Research Station. The river narrows, causing the canopy to dangle thick branches and lush leaves over the boat. You brush away the foliage feeling the waxy texture of the leaves on your skin. You notice a rhinoceros hornbill perching on an upper branch. Their beak and crowning horn contain colors similar to the sunset contrasting their muddled black foliage. The boat moors at the edge of Camp Leakey, located beneath the 100-foot tall forest canopy. The camp was erected in the early 1970s as an orangutan rehabilitation center.

Today the camp serves the research efforts of scientists and students moving beyond the preservation of only orangutans. Your guide introduces you to the camp, along with the resident rehabilitating orangutans. At two in the afternoon, your guide pulls out a bundle of bananas and buckets of milk to feed the orangutans. Seeing one of the largest apes up close is an unforgettable, breathtaking experience. The orange hair rustles with each of the orangutan’s movement. Their large hands and feet have nearly equal dexterity. Your guide reminds you that, even though the orangutans can be gentle giants with captivating charm, they are still wild animals in need of rehabilitation before being returned to their home in the jungle.

Tanjung Puting – Enchantment of the Jungle Surrounds

In the morning, the sounds of the jungle continue, filling with the calls of hornbills and rambunctious chatter of long tail macaques. Agile gibbons rustle the branches as they swing from tree to tree. After breakfast, you venture to the Pondok Tanggui Orangutan Rehabilitation Center to witness the community of or greater apes nearly ready to return to the wild, along with the rare proboscis monkey, which are found only in Borneo. Trails around the center lead you along the lowland swamps and beneath blossoming orchids. The vibrant pink, white, and light purple petals contrast the jade and emerald leaves protruding from the canopy. Sunlight pierces the treetops in streaks reaching down to the jungle floor.

A troop of proboscis monkeys lingers in the trees. You stop to view their unique features. Males grow up to 30 inches in height and can weigh up to 50 pounds. They are known for their large noses and cream-colored coats. As the day progresses, the monkeys grow more tired in the warm tropical air. They move less and laze in the protection of the shady trees more. Crocodiles linger near the banks of the swampland and sunbirds zip through the sky perching from one thin strand of underbrush to the next. Their iridescent blue plumage glows in the wisps of jungle light.

Tanjung Harapan – Beyond the Jungle Buffer Zone

In the morning, the air cools allowing the animals to move freely without the hindrance of the jungle humidity and heat. Before sunrise, the elusive pangolin wanders through the underbrush in search of ants and termites. The unique animals have a hardened outer shell with overlapping plates resembling large scales. During the day, they burrow into the ground or reside in hollowed out trees once ripe with their preferred dietary treats. After breakfast, you make you way further into the reaches of the national park, this time visiting the final outpost of orangutan conservation in Borneo at Tanjung Harapan. The post was the first of the conservation centers and acts as the beginning of the buffer zone between the national park and civilization.

Your guide leads you along the trails searching for the distinctive sounds of orangutans in the wild. Beneath the calls of colorful kingfishers, you can hear rustling in the leaves. Your guide points into the trees before a hollowed out coconut falls from the canopy. You can see the rich orange coat of the orangutan lazing on a comfortable spot between trunk and branch. You can’t help but stare, conscious of how fast your heart is racing after finding a great ape lounging in the wild. The orangutan continues to nibble at the flesh of the other half of a coconut before dropping its shell to the jungle floor.

Nusa Dua – In Balinese Paradise

At breakfast, the exotic aromas of the jungle return in the form of fresh coconuts at breakfast accompanied by the scent of rich Javanese coffee. Your private transfer meets you at the hotel when ready and escorts you to the airport for your brief flight to Bali. Nusa Dua is a relaxing combination of Balinese culture and international luxury. The plane lands at Ngurah Rai Airport, where your private transfer greets you at baggage claim. The remainder of the day is at your leisure to indulge in the soft white sand beaches and indigo waters of the Indian Ocean or wander along the shopping gallery and cafés lining the welcoming streets.

For an introduction to Nusa Dua and Bali, you venture south along the promenade to Gegar Beach. The bluff overlooks the water with an adorning café and temple. The small but gorgeous structure stands beneath the twisting branches of old trees. The scent of freshly brewed coffee emanates from the café blending with the scented sea breeze. You can see the local fishermen head out beyond the reef break in traditional wooden boats. The colorful paint decorating the vessels are meant to appease the gods, bring the fishermen luck, and have the bonus of being visible from long distances.

Nusa Dua – Stepping Inside the Culture

The soothing rhythm of the waves lapping against the white and gold sand shores of Nusa Dua have replaced the distinctive morning sounds of the jungle. Fishermen once again set out in their colorful boats in search of the perfect catch and surfers venture past the reef break along Nusa Dua Beach to find the perfect wave. After breakfast, you begin you cultural exploration of Bali with the famous Barong and Kris Dance. The performance adds formal expression to the mythology of the good versus evil. The lion-like spirit of Barong battles the demon queen.

The bright red mask and golden decoration of the lion add to the mystical qualities of the movement. Rangda, the evil spirit, takes the shape of a large dog. The two figures reflect on the nature of good and evil in human action as they dance around one another. The performance dates back to the 10th century and continues to represent the Balinese tradition of storytelling through dance. You venture deeper into the captivating tales of the community with a visit to Mas, the heart of the island’s woodwork.

The art promotes the collaboration between humanism and naturalism, with an emphasis on understanding the wonders of nature. A monumental statue of a baby represents the beginning of Mas Village, in which locals have supported a shift from agricultural work to celebrated craftsmen. An open workshop allows you to view a woodcarver diligently crafting a stunning larger piece resembling the twisting vines of a banyan tree. The artist welcomes you into the workshop eagerly explaining the type of bau wood he uses, along with the inspiration gathered from folklore, legend, and religion.

Ubud – A Day in the Mountains

In the morning, you find the sweet aroma of pineapple and rambutan filling the dining room at breakfast. The golden sheen of the beach returns with the spreading sunlight. Your guide meets you in the hotel lobby ready to lead you away from the beaches of southern Bali and on tailored Bali tours to the hills at the island’s center. The casual gradient leads you along the Jati Luwih rice field. The sweeping emerald hues of the plain lead to sporadic soaring coconut palms and thatched roof houses rising. The fields are visibly segmented, showing the boundaries between farms. You reach the shores of Lake Bratan to find the stunning figure of Ulun Danu Bratan Temple, a 17th-century construction dedicated to the goddess of the waters.

The thatched roof multi-tiered shrine reflects in the tranquil lake water with the mountains fulfilling the picturesque backdrop. Local couples paddle along the water inside swan-shaped pedal boats, traversing the outer ring of the temple. You continue into the hills to view Gitgit Waterfall, an 115-foot cascade rushing between the remarkably lush trees. The water splashes down into the waiting pool, adding a beckoning clap through the air. Monkeys linger in the surrounding trees watching passersby enjoy the misty and majestic beauty of the water beading down onto the smoothed boulders before filtering into the pool.

Ubud – Taking to the Trails

Today you step out onto the trails surrounding the enchanting cultural town of Ubud to connect with the landscape and locals. Mount a bike and follow your guide along the meandering tracks taking you alongside and beyond the rice fields in the countryside. Pass through villages with frangipani trees decorating the roadside with blossoming pink and white flowers. Kids kick soccer balls against the outside walls of their homes beneath the overhanging thatched rooftops. The rice fields open to distinctive plantations in which locals grow cloves, coffee, and cocoa. The scents of the crops provide a semi-sweet and spiced aroma to the air.

You have a personal view of the traditional irrigation system known as subak , which was developed in the 9th century. The terraces allow for the water to reach crop roots, along with helping create the complex artificial ecosystem in which the crops can thrive. The network encompasses nearly 50,000 acres set across five terraced rice fields. After returning to Ubud, you venture to the Elephant Cave known locally as Goa Gajah. The temple contains elaborate reliefs carved into the rock, which includes the watchful eyes of a guardian situated above the cave entrance. The menacing creatures on display date back to at least the 11th century. The intricate details of each carving, along with the featured statues in the Bathing Temple, create an impressive atmosphere. The scent of burning incense drifts out of the cave and adds to the unique ambiance of the temple complex.

Ubud – Learning the Movements

Ubud maintains a deep connection to the culture and traditions of Bali, evident in the wealth of temples and captivating artwork filling the Sukawati Art Market. After breakfast, the first half of the day is yours to embrace the splendor of Ubud at your leisure, exploring the beautiful displays of the handcrafted works in the marketplace or by discovering the temples hidden within the trees of the Sacred Monkey Forest. For a distinctively Balinese experience, you venture to a celebrated dance studio to learn the specific steps of traditional cultural dances, each important to the heritage of their role in telling particular stories.

The studio brings the community and visitors together for a better understanding of the island culture and Ubud’s importance in cultural preservation. Your instructor opens up the space inside the studio, offering a warm familial introduction. You learn the importance of each movement, not only for its beauty but for its ability to add to the story the dance tells. Your instructor first teaches you the steps before helping position your arms and hands. You first learn the Agem , the basic posture of the dancer that doesn’t alter between movements. You then learn the way to transition from one posture to an adjoining movement. Lastly, you learn the Tangkep , which determines the depth of the dance, otherwise known as its soul.

Labuan Bajo – Paradise in Flores

In the morning, the artists and craftsmen with stalls around the art market open their shops to showcase the stunning depictions of culture and daily life around Bali. Sweeping brush strokes help capture the beauty of the rice fields and intricate details of the stone sculptures decorating the temples. After breakfast, you venture to the airport for an easy flight to the neighboring island of Flores, landing at Komodo Airport. The lush landscape overtakes the view, bordering the runway and leading to the rolling mountains in the near distance.

Your private transfer meets you at baggage claim before leading you to a luxurious hotel overlooking the white-sand shores of Labuan Bajo. The infinity swimming pool trickles in the shade cast by the rustling palms. Island mountains freckle your view rising sporadically off the coast. Cafes and restaurants line the main street filling the town with aromas of rich coffee, sweet pastries, and freshly cooked seafood caught that morning.  You easily settle into the serene charm of the town, watching small sailboats glide along the quiet water, and fishermen bring mounds of fish to the market.

Komodo National Park – In Search of Elusive Dragons

In the morning, diving boats set out from the marina with eager scuba enthusiasts ready to break the ocean’s surface in search of sharks, manta rays, and sea turtles. After breakfast, you step aboard a boat bound for Komodo National Park, keen on breaking open the trails of Komodo Island in search of the eponymous dragon. During the boat ride, the ocean breeze brushes through your hair. The boat passes into the expanse of Komodo National Park, which encompasses more than 700 square miles. A dolphin arches out of the water and splashes back down while playing with the rest of the pod.

The boat docks at the wood pier on Komodo. The gold sand leads to dense forest and the textured ridges of the bordering hills. A small indigenous village borders the waterway. You wander past the ranger station to follow the trail. A sign carved out of a local wood says “Keep Silent” in regards to the dragon’s sensitive hearing. The canopy traps the warm air. The forest trees clear and you discover a dragon lounging in the speckles of light piercing the treetops. The male weighs an average of 200 pounds and can accelerate up to speeds of 18 miles per hour.  Your heart pounds with excitement, as there is nothing like the thrill of discovering an animal in its natural habitat.

Labuan Bajo – Unforgettable Indonesia

Outside of Labuan Bajo stands Rangko Cave. Crystal clear saltwater fills a pool magnifying the colorful pink and blue stones. The sunlight shines directly into the cave around noon, bouncing off the water for a colorful, radiant effect. The splendors around the island of Flores and the rest of Indonesia have captivated you, with each island offering a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural charm. At breakfast, you bask in the familiar aromas of the sea breeze and freshly roasted coffee beans sourced in Indonesia. When you are ready, your private transfer meets you at the hotel and escorts you to Komodo Airport for your flight home.

Borneo Tours

orangutan in tree, borneo

Welcome to the jungle

One of the least explored areas on the planet, the mention of Borneo conjures up images of primeval rainforest, undiscovered tribes, and rare, exotic species. Comprised mostly of impenetrable jungle, the world's third-largest island is shared by Indonesia, Malaysia, and the tiny, wealthy Sultanate of Brunei. Home to critically endangered rhino, elephant, leopard, and orangutan – to name but a few – Borneo's wildlife is its top draw. But as pressures from logging, forest fires, and the growing demand for palm oil mount, refuges are increasingly the best way to see wildlife, so come while you can. While you're at it, take a trek up Sabah's Mt Kinabalu, search for the world's largest flower, or learn the ancient traditions of the island's headhunter tribes.

This exciting Borneo and Komodo islands wildlife adventure combines a gentle river cruise through the forests of Kalimantan in Indonesian Borneo with a sea cruise aboard a traditionally built, ironwood phinisi schooner through Indonesia’s lesser Sunda Islands and the majestic Komodo National Park. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to explore Java’s cultural city of Jogjakarta, where you can discover the ancient Buddhist temple of Borobudur, followed by a local train journey to the active Mount Bromo volcano and the dramatic landscape of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. You can also enjoy a few days on the beautiful island of Bali, combined with some mouth-watering Balinese cuisine.

Kalimantan’s meandering rivers remain the best way to travel through the lush rainforest jungles of Borneo, where a startling array of flora and fauna and a wealth of cultural and ecological treasures include indigenous tribes. Keep your eyes peeled for long-nosed proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, red langurs, brahmini kites, hornbills flying gracefully overhead, and Asia’s only great ape, the Orangutan. Drop into a renowned orangutan research and rehabilitation center, located in the heart of Tanjung Putting National Park and meet some of these magnificent creatures.

Visit the city of Jogjakarta, the historic and cultural soul of Java, which is known for its wonderful arts and is still headed by a sultan. Wander through the Sultan’s ‘kraton’ (walled city palace), which remains the hub of traditional life, as well as the Taman Sari water palace and the city market. Marvel at the sunrise over the 7th century Buddhist temple of Borobudur, one of Indonesia’s most important archaeological sites, and watch the sunrise again two days later over the spectacular Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and its smoke-spewing volcanoes. Cross the desert-like sea of sand of the ancient caldera and up a steep staircase to the crater rim of Mt Bromo, and peer into the smoking darkness below – the veritable gates of hell, redolent with sulphur vapors.

Your luxury Bali tour

Transfer to the gorgeous island of Bali for a tour of some of the island’s most iconic Hindu temples, from the jungle to the rice terraces to the sea. The magic continues with a cleansing purification ritual, a guided meditation session conducted by a Hindu priest, and a very special lunch in a blissful setting in the rice fields. You will also get to enjoy a day to yourself. Go exploring, see the art galleries, the museums, and a traditional market where you can shop for handicrafts and souvenirs before a tour of East Bali and the chance to unwind beachside.

The final leg of your Indonesia wildlife holiday is a fabulous sea cruise, which takes you through glorious scenery and a panorama of islands, exploring quiet coastal villages, waterfall-fed river pools, volcanic islands, a boatbuilding community, and a mysterious crater lake. Encounter an amazing variety of wildlife including the legendary Komodo dragons. Snorkel the kaleidoscopic beauty of the underwater world and embrace the chance to swim with gentle whale sharks and giant manta rays. Relax on pink beaches; trek to savannah-clad viewpoints at sunset; and witness the astonishing sight of hundreds of thousands of flying foxes emerging in a steady throng from the forest at dusk.

This luxury adventure tour is perfect for active fun-loving families or groups of friends. This is just a sample itinerary; the featured excursions, cruise vessels, and accommodations can be tailored in accordance with your personal wishes. All excursions and transfers are on a private basis (private transport with private guide), with the exception of the cruise portion, which is typically done on a shared basis with other passengers unless you require a private charter.

Welcome to the Borneo Rainforest

Upon arrival at Pangkalan Bun Airport in Central Kalimantan, you will be met by our local guide and transferred to the nearby port of Kumai. Here you will board your traditional riverboat called a  Klotok  and journey for approximately 2 hours along the Sekonyer River into Tanjung Puting National Park. Established as a national park in 1982 and composed of more than 400,000 hectares of mangrove swamp, rainforest, and dense jungle, the park is home to primates, leopards, lizards, and more than 600 species of birds. Tanjung Puting is notable for both its ecological and biological diversity as well as its orangutan conservation.

This afternoon’s excursion with a local guide will have you searching for orangutans and proboscis monkeys as well as other species of animals and birds that all call the surrounding rainforest their home.

Your accommodation during the trip to Tanjung Puting National Park will be on a  klotok , a traditional wooden river boat designed to navigate the waters of Indonesia and named after the engine noise – ‘klok tok klok tok’.

Orangutans and crocodiles

After breakfast, boating down to the orangutan feeding station at Pondok Tanggui. A journey of little over an hour, the jungle becomes denser as you slowly make your way north and there are good opportunities for wildlife spotting from the deck of the boat along the way.

The arrival time at Pondok Tanggui is scheduled to coincide with the morning feeding of the orangutans at 9 am. Accompanied by your guide and a local park ranger you will disembark the boat and hike along small tracks deep into the jungle where the feeding area is located. There will be ample time to witness these wonderful apes from close quarters before returning to the dock at approximately 10 am to continue your expedition.

Afterward, stream to the Sekonyer River and travel along a tributary known locally as ‘Crocodile River’ which, as the name suggests, is home to a number of these aquatic reptiles. Enjoying yet more superb scenery and a fresh lunch prepared by the crew en route, you will arrive at Camp Leakey in approximately 2 to 3 hours.

Established in 1971, Camp Leakey is a renowned the orangutan research and rehabilitation center located in the heart of Tanjung Putting National Park. Founded originally as just a research center, over the years the camp has expanded and now also focuses on conservation and rehabilitation as well as continuing to carry out important research about these fascinating primates.

There will be time to look around the center and meet some of the local rangers as well as witness the daily afternoon feeding. Should you desire, there is the option to take a short trek into the jungle surrounding the camp before heading back to your boat for the night.

Borobodur and Village Life

Depart in the morning to visit Borobudur, 42km west of Jogjakarta. With your guide on hand, explore this massive Buddhist Temple (the largest in the world) and discover the incredible history behind its construction.

Comprised of thousands of volcanic and river stone blocks, the temple was assembled entirely by human labor and took more than 75 years to complete. The UNESCO Heritage site is still visible in its full glory, with magnificent carvings and its unusual bulky structure.

Take a short trip from Borobudur to visit the nearby Mendut temple. Older than Borobudur, this pyramid-shaped temple houses three impressively carved stone statues. You’ll also visit Pawon temple, a simple yet beautiful monument known for its precise symmetry.

Stop for lunch at a restaurant set amidst verdant rice fields before boarding a horse cart for a rustic ride through Candirejo village. Trundling along narrow lanes lined with traditional houses, catch glimpses of authentic village life such as villagers making cassava crackers, playing the gamelan, and harvesting chili. After the ride, return to Yogya.

Sunrise & Bromo Trekking

With its huge crater and almost mystical-like scenery in all directions, Mount Bromo and its surroundings are stunning beyond question. Sunrise is the most magical time to view the entire Bromo landscape but this does involve a very early morning start. Firstly travel by normal vehicle to Wonotoro, a small village 2,000 meters above sea level and the gateway to the region. Then continue by private jeep to the rim of Mount Penanjakan in time for dawn. From this vantage point, you will have the best views not only of Mount Bromo but also of Mount Batok and Mount Semeru.

After witnessing a spectacular sunrise, you will return to your jeep and make the steep descent back down to the bottom of the volcano and then cross the Lautan Pasir (Sand Sea) to the base of Mount Bromo itself. The climb of approximately 250 steps to the rim of the crater is definitely worth the effort and you will be rewarded with yet more incredible vistas. After your visit, return to your hotel.

Spiritual Journey Through Time

Today we journey to Pakerisan Valley, an 8th Century World Heritage site and the birthplace of the Hindu Darma religion, to uncover the historical religious roots of modern-day Bali.

The day starts with a short visit to the very first Hindu temple in Bali, encircled by a small village that grew around this sacred structure. Here we will meet our guide for the day, an experienced researcher of Balinese spiritualism and curator of the Sukarno museum who will lead us to a temple nestled in the jungle; an ancient meeting point for Balinese priests to convene and write the following year’s calendar. Our guide will describe how people connect with God through the temple and demonstrate how to open your mind to the spiritual world.

Leaving the Jungle temple, we will head to Tirtha Mengening, a very small temple located next to Holy Spring-fed pools. Built in 1023, Tirtha Mengening roughly translates into “child waters” and offers a cleansing purification ritual conducted by a Balinese priest. After the ceremony, take a plunge into the cool spring waters of a gentle river, shaded by a large tree. Soak in the serene atmosphere, for this temple is seldom visited by tourists despite being one of the most sacred in the region.

Lunch at a special place, surrounded by lush rice fields still grown from the original species of rice brought by the first Hindu priests in the 8th Century. After lunch, there is an opportunity to visit the priest’s house where he will guide us in quiet meditation. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon and enjoy your evening at leisure!

Learn more about Borneo

Best time to visit borneo.

Borneo's climate is typical for a tropical region - generally hot and humid all year-round.

Temperatures are usually in the high 20C ° s for most of the year, dropping back to the low 20 ° s at night.

Rainfall tends to be in short, heavy bursts followed by sunshine. The 'wet season' runs from November through to February but it does rain throughout the year, although our itineraries are rarely affected.

The state of Sabah is known as the 'land below the wind' as it's below the monsoon belt.

Culture and customs

The cultures across Borneo can vary depending on what border you’re closest to – divided into Malaysian, Indonesia and Brunei regions.

Borneo’s population is largely made up of Malay with the predominant religion being Muslim. The remainder of Borneo’s population is Chinese, Indian or belong to indigenous populations.

You may hear the word ‘Dayak’ used by locals as a general term referring to the riverine and hill-dwelling ethnic subgroups in Borneo.

Historically, most indigenous communities in regional areas lived in longhouses, though many have moved for employment in urban areas. That being said, there is still a substantial number of Dayak tribes that maintain a strong spiritual tie to the rainforest and have retained their customs and speak local dialects.

Food and drink

Rice (nasi) and noodles (mee) are dietary staples across the island and accompany most meals. You’ll find varieties of white, red and brown rice grown throughout Borneo – prepared by steaming, frying, boiling into a breakfast porridge, or cooking with coconut milk in a hollowed bamboo stick to make lemang.

Must-try foods in Borneo

1. Sarawak laksa

This Malaysian-influenced staple is a spicy broth filled with vermicelli noodles, bean sprouts, chicken slices, shrimp and coriander.

Skewers of meat (usually beef or chicken) are grilled to perfection over charcoal.

3. Roti canai

Fried roti bread that is crispy, fluffy and soft all at the same time. It might be served with savoury or sweet fillings (from eggs and sardines to coconut jam and bananas), dipped into curry and lentil sauces, or enjoyed on its own.

4. Bamboo chicken

Chicken marinated in chillies, lemongrass, garlic and ginger is stuffed into a bamboo stick with rice, sealed with turmeric leaves and cooked over an open flame until all the flavours merge together.

Geography and environment

The South-East Asian island of Borneo sits just south of the South China Sea, with the Sulu Sea, Celebes Sea, Makassar Strait, Java Sea and Karimata Strait also surrounding the island.

Split up between three countries (Brunei, Indonesia , Malaysia ), the regions most visited by tourists (Sabah and Sarawak) belong to Malaysia.

Home to the oldest rainforest in the world, large cave and river systems and mountains, Borneo has an incredible range of biodiversity with hundreds of species of birds, bats, plants, flowers and insects living in this ecologically precious part of the world.

Sitting 4,095 m above sea level, Sabah's Mount Kinabalu is the third highest mountain in South-East Asia and a popular trekking spot for active travellers looking for a challenge.

History and government

Early history.

Early on, Borneo was used as a port for trade, with the Chinese and Indians stopping in on the coast as a part of their trade route from 500 to 1300 AD. The Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and British were soon to follow. Because of this, Borneo now has a rich diversity of international influences to draw upon from these years of trade and interaction with other cultures.

With most of coastal Borneo falling under the rule of the Javanese Majapahit kingdom in the 14th century, the Sultanate of Brunei extended its rule in the north from the 15th to 17th century. By the 19th century, both the British and the Dutch had colonial interests in the area, with a dynasty led by James Brooke ruling Sarawak for many years. Brooke's interest in the area stemmed from his attempts at trade in the Far East and connections to the Sultanate of Brunei. Brooke's rule was fraught with controversy and battles with the Sea Dayak people, who interrupted trade and were labelled as pirates. James Brook was succeeded by his nephew, Charles, and then his son, Vyner, in this rule known as the 'White Rajahs' of Sarawak.

Recent history

Japan took control of Borneo during World War II, resulting in a high number of deaths for the local population. During the war, many British and Australian prisoners of war were sent to Borneo, with the most notorious spots being Sandakan where thousands of Allied soldiers perished due to disease, malnutrition and exhaustion.

By the conclusion of the war in 1945, Borneo was freed from the Japanese yet only two decades later, Borneo was the site of more conflict, this time between Indonesia and Malaysia. This conflict arose from the union of Sabah and Sarawak with Malaya in the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. More recently, the Sultanate of Brunei became an independent nation (in 1984).

Palm oil plantations have spread rapidly throughout Borneo in the last ten years, mainly due to the decline in the rubber industry. While these plantations have provided jobs and helped the economy in the short term, their proliferation has led to wide-scale deforestation, which surmounts to devastating habitat loss for many of Borneo's endangered species and displacement of indigenous people who rely on the forests and jungles to sustain their hunter-gatherer lifestyles.

Top 10 nature spots of Borneo

8. Mulu National Park

Visitors should overlook Mulu National Park at their own peril. Not visiting this World Heritage-listed area would mean missing out on canopy walks and treks that reveal exotic creatures, spectacular caves and stunning limestone karst formations.

9. Danum Valley

This area of pristine lowland rainforest is arguably one of Borneo's premier wildlife hot spots. Walk the trails and spot exotic birdlife, interesting plants, flying squirrels, vocal frogs and active gibbons.

While Borneo's wild landscapes and beautiful beaches are definitely the true highlight of any visit, there are still treasures to found in Borneo's markets.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to visit Borneo?

Visas are your responsibility. Entry requirements can change anytime, so you must check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you visit for detailed and up-to-date visa information about your nationality. Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more details.

Tipping isn’t customary in Borneo, but leaving a small token of appreciation is always welcome if you feel the service has been particularly good.

What is internet access like in Borneo?

Internet is easy to access in large cities and tourist areas, though it can be quite slow. Access is more limited in remote and rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Borneo?

Cell phone coverage is good in major cities, but there is little to no coverage in the mountains and in remote areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Borneo?

Squat toilets are common in Borneo, though some hotels and tourist areas have Western-style, flushable toilets. Carrying your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer is a good idea, as these are not always provided.

What will it cost for a…?

The currencies of Borneo are the Indonesian rupiah, the Malaysian ringgit and the Brunei dollar in each of their respective countries. Below is how much everyday items will cost in CAD for ease of comparison:

  • Bottle of beer = CAD 4
  • Laksa from a food stall = CAD 1-2.50

Can I drink the tap water in Borneo?

Most places only accept cash, especially small businesses, though you might be able to use your credit card at larger hotels, shops and restaurants in tourist areas.

What is ATM access like in Borneo?

You’ll find ATMs in Borneo’s large cities and urban areas, though they are less easy to find in rural and remote parts.

  • 1 Jan: New Year’s Day
  • 5 Feb: Chinese New Year
  • 5 Jun: Eid al-Fitr
  • 11 Aug: Eid al-Adha
  • 31 Aug: Islamic New Year
  • 9 Nov: Prophet Muhammad's Birthday
  • 25 Dec: Christmas Day

Please note, there are more public holidays in Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Borneo?

No vaccines are required in order to enter Borneo but some are recommended for protection against disease. Always visit your doctor or travel clinic for up-to-date advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Is Borneo a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Discretion is highly advised for LGBTQIA+ travellers in Borneo. Homosexuality is illegal in both Malaysia and Brunei, where it can be punished with long prison sentences or even death.

While homosexuality is not illegal in Indonesia, few people are openly out. Regardless of which part of Borneo you are visiting, discretion is strongly suggested.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

They bring a name board with your name stated on it and will escort you to the hotel.

DAY 2: JAKARTA – PANGKALAN BUN – KUMAI – TANJUNG HARAPAN       ▼

After breakfast, at the appointed time the hotel’s driver will take you to the airport to catch your flight to Pangkalan Bun, Borneo.  Upon arrival in Pangkalan Bun, your guide will transfer you to the port of Kumai in about 15-20 minutes by car where you will board our traditional wooden boat called a klotok.  Once everything is ready, the cruise upstream starts on the famous Sekonyer river abroad the klotok.

If your flight arrives early (before 12 PM), we can arrive on time at the Tanjung Harapan rehabilitation centre. There at 3 in the afternoon, the orangutans are fed by the rangers of the national park and you can have the first close encounters with them.  The literal translation of Tanjung Harapan is Cape of Hope. This first camp has more wetlands and therefore has more mosquitoes in the afternoon. Make sure you put on enough mosquito repellent. After visiting this camp, you will continue your journey upriver resting on the boat while observing animals in the sides of Sekonyer River.

In the afternoon it is very common to see groups of proboscis monkey and macaques in the treetops, jumping from one tree branch to another.  Also, see if you can find crocodiles or lizards in the shallow waters on the sides of the river.  Prepare for the sunset and enjoy the exquisite food prepared by our jungle crew. The boat is moored on the side of the river to spend the night.

Optional: Tonight, we can take a walk through the jungle to look for nocturnal animals such as snakes and tarantulas.  If we are lucky, we can find luminescent mushrooms or tarsier monkeys as well.

Meals : Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Accommodation : Klotok

DAY 3: PESALAT – CAMP LEAKEY       ▼

After an extraordinary breakfast,  we prepare the backpacks to start a trekking in the Pesalat area where we can more intensely enjoy the endemics of the area,   search for wild orangutans.

Reforestation & Trekking

Today we are going to take part of the conservation of the national park, visiting the reforestation center of the Friends of the National Park Foundation (FNPF) where you can volunteer to Plant a tree and thus take the pride that you have contributed to the conservation to over there.

On the way we will have the opportunity to learn a lot about the jungle from our local guides, of whom some of them were born in the jungle.  They’ll explain how to look for animals or plants, and you can listen to their experience of life in the jungle. The jungles of Borneo, that have given life and shelter to its inhabitants for millions of years, are jungles that under the watch of their ancestors, are still capable of fulfilling every single individual’s needs. Food, water, medicines, etc. But never throw anything in your mouth without your guide’s recommendation.

Camp Leakey

Back at the klotok, we start our journey upriver, delving further into the jungle.  You will see how the color of the river changes and you will have the opportunity to see crocodiles and large monitor lizards, together with Gibbons and Proboscis Monkeys.   Arrival at Camp Leakey ,  the old center for research and rehabilitation of orangutans since 1971 , when a student at UCLA University from Los Angeles, called  Birutte Galdikas  began to study the Orangutans in it, the name Camp Leaky comes from Birutte’s own professor, the Paleoanthropologist Louis Leakey.

At least 200 orangutans have already been cured and returned to the forests thanks to this center,  however since 1995, the Government of Indonesia has prohibited the introduction of more Orangutans in this camp, so the Orangutans are adapting more and more to freedom.

Today, this camp is used for behavioral and feeding research of Orangutans.  At 14:00 you can see the feeding time of the Orangutans.  You can also visit the small museum made by the scientist Dr. Birute Galdikas.  In the afternoon, if it doesn’t rain, the boat will dock near a congregation of fireflies and you can enjoy the spectacle of their luminescence.

Day 4: PONDOK TANGGUY - CAMP LEAKEY       ▼

Today you will wake up with the sounds and the colours of the jungle.  Without a doubt, you will never forget how you woke up on the river, surrounded by the overflowing nature.

Pondok Tangguy

After an extraordinary breakfast on board, we will arrive on time to visit Pondok Tangguy camp at the feeding time for animals (9AM).

Little by little, you will see how the treetops begin to move and then you will see the silhouettes of the orangutans gradually reaching the feeding platform.  Tangguy was a release camp for young orangutans that had been rehabilitated. It prevented them from moving away due to lack of food and ending up outside the national park, with the following risks of falling into traps of settlers or palm oil plantations. After the orangutans begin to leave the camp, you will return to the klotok to continue further upstream. You will witness how the colour of the river changes and you will have the opportunity to see crocodiles and large monitor lizards, along with Gibbons and proboscis monkeys. Of course, you will enjoy your lunch in this lovely setting.

You will arrive at Camp Leakey, the old orangutan rehabilitation centre.  It was founded in 1971, when a student from UCLA University in Los Angeles named Birutte Galdikas, began studying the orangutans there.  The name Camp Leakey came from Birutte’s own professor, paleo-anthropologist Louis Leakey.  At least 200 orangutans have already been cured and returned to the jungle thanks to this centre. However, since 1995 the Indonesian government banned the introduction of more orangutans in this camp, so the orangutans are increasingly adapting to freedom.  Today, this camp is used for behavioural and feeding research for orangutans. You can also visit the small museum built by the scientist Dr. Birutte Galdikas.

After finishing the observing of orangutans in this camp, we will do a gentle trekking through the jungle back to the boat to search for free orangutans and other animals, if the weather conditions permit.  We will have the opportunity to learn a lot about the jungle from our local guides, of which some of them were born in the jungle. They’ll explain how to look for animals or plants, and you can listen to their experience of life in the jungle.  The jungles of Borneo have given life and shelter to its inhabitants for million of years. They are jungles that under the watch of their ancestors are capable of fulfilling every single individual’s needs.  Food, water, medicines, etc. But never throw anything in your mouth without your guide’s recommendation.

In the afternoon if it does not rain, the boat will be docked near a swarm of fireflies and you can enjoy the show of its luminescence.

Meals : Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

DAY 5: KUMAI - PANGKALAN BUN - SEMARANG - MAGELANG       ▼

In the early morning, we will enjoy the last moments of the sounds of the jungle, before heading to the airport to catch the flight to Semarang.

The temple is a penyawangan or place to worship other sacred sites.

DAY 14: KOMODO ISLAND - PINK BEACH - LABUAN BAJO       ▼

Today, we will sail to Loh Liang that is the ranger’s station on Komodo Island . During the 3 and a half hours of navigation,  you will realize that the sea is like a great lake dotted with hundreds of tiny islands,  most of them uninhabited, or with only a few fishermen, who moor in them to rest or spend the night.  Once on the island, we have to enter the office of the rangers to register and pay the national park fee. There we will be assigned a ranger who will accompany us at all times while we are inside the island.

Safety information

Rangers always carry a long pole with a V-shaped tip, to make dragons keep their distance from us.  They will give us a brief explanation of behavior in the park and what we can see.  The dragons may sometimes make sudden moves so opening your eyes and keeping silent will always be the best advice .  Watch your back as there might be also one behind you or up on the trees.  The Ranger will always be leading the group, showing us all the species that he sees during the trekking.

In addition to the Komodo dragons, we can see Timor Deer, wild pigs and various types of running hens as well as sulfur cockatoos, snakes, etc.

At the end of the trek, we head back to the port and continue the cruise.  After a short while, we will reach Pantai Merah (Pink Beach)  where we can do snorkeling in the middle of coral reefs full of life.  Did you know that Indonesia is the most important center of marine biodiversity in the world?  It is where the species of the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean come together with the endemic species of Indonesia. It makes Indonesia have the largest number of underwater species in the world. Well, you will be swimming in the middle of all that.

In the afternoon we go to the port of Labuan Bajo, and from there to the hotel, to rest from both sea and mountains.

Take the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the hotel facilities or stroll around the hotel.

Day 16: BALI - GILI ISLANDS       ▼

At the agreed time, you will be picked up from your hotel for the transfer to the port from where you will take the boat and cross to the Gilis Islands.  In these islands, motor vehicles are not allowed, so if you come with suitcases and do not want to walk with them, it is best to take a Cidomo (horse-drawn carriage) that you can find them as soon as you leave the pier. They are like the taxis of the Gilis Islands. Upon arrival at the hotel, check in and rest of the day off.

Search well because these islands are the home of many species of turtles and it is wonderful to be able to swim with them. Always remember that the sea is your space and we must respect it. You can also contract a massage and go to dinner on a terrace on the beach with live music and taste local Indonesian cuisine.

Day 20: GILI ISLANDS - BALI       ▼

Enjoy your breakfast, then at the appointed time you need to go to the port for check in and transfer back to Bali. You can leave the hotel by walking to the port or hire a Cidomo (at own expense). By fast boat, the cross will for about an hour, crossing the sea to Bali. On arrival, transfer to the hotel in the exclusive area of Nusa Dua, and then you have your free time.

Borneo is one of the most captivating destinations in South East Asia.

A compound of untouched rainforest, beaches and mountain ranges, Borneo is an off-the-beaten-track adventure. The island is home to many incredible but endangered species like the orangutan, pygmy elephant, Malayan sunbear, proboscis monkey and Borneo rhino.

We’ve handpicked discreet, conscientious safaris and guided expeditions through the Kinabatangan Rainforest and Danum Valley to give you the best opportunities for observing animals.

For the perfect add-on to your jungle expedition, you can hop over to Borneo’s collection of idyllic, palm-fringed islands, such as Lankayan or Mataking, where the wildlife experience continues with a wealth of aquatic life, such as sea turtles and whale sharks.

Of course, there’s plenty of cultural trips to be done, too: we can take you to the markets of Kinabulu and remote jungle water-villages, or we can arrange an exploration of rural Sabah by bicycle.

The itinerary did exactly as expected, showcased the highlights of Sabah. The additional activities exceeded expectations; tubing in Tambatuon village was fun for the range of ages amongst out group, on the night jungle walk in kinabatangan, we had the pleasure of strolling across an endangered tarsier. Our well-connected guide (Jerry) was actively involved in all activities and shared a wealth of knowledge, as a local. The connections Jerry has with the communities made us feel at home in Borneo. His professionalism and experience in mountain climbing made the Mt Kinabalu hike a personal highlight for me. A well-passed, humbling and spectacular adventure well worth taking.

Borneo Papua Komodo Expedition Tour

Borneo Papua Komodo Expedition Tour – 14 Days-01

Borneo Island is the land of Dayak tribes and lush rainforests containing some of the richest flora and fauna in the world. The Indonesian part of Borneo is called “Kalimantan” and covers about two-thirds of the island. Kalimantan has an intriguing history of sultanates and indigenous Dayak tribes, with a wealth of ecological and cultural treasures that survive deep within the rainforests of the world’s third's largest island. Orang Utan is must to see while you are on the island . High up in the mountains of central Papua at an altitude of 1,600 meters above sea level, hemmed in by steep green mountain walls, lies the stunningly beautiful Baliem Valley, home of the Dani tribe.  Baliem valley is 72 km long, and 15-31 km wide in places. It is cut by the Baliem River, which has its source in the northern Trikora Mountain, cascading into the Grand Valley, to meander down and further rushing south dropping 1,500 meters to become a large muddy river that slowly empties into the Arafura Sea. The extraordinary interest among travelers lies in Komodo Dragons or locally called ora. It is a valuable alluring factor, showcased in its superb national park. The Komodo National Park was listed as UNESCO’s World Heritage Site in 1991. Both on land and underwater, it is home to fascinating wildlife. The park consists of Komodo Island, Rinca Island, Padar Island, and numerous smaller islands around.

We became aware of Flores Active Tours through a recommendation, which in hindsight was one of the best decisions we ever made.

Frankie went to extraordinary lengths even before the trip and organised a lot for us. Whether it was the transfers and boat tickets to Gili and back, transfers to our hotels or guided tours with him directly. Thanks to Frankie, we got to know some of the most beautiful sides of Bali and fell in love straight away.

Whether it was funny moments with durian fruits tied under the car, lots of information about history and culture – we always felt that we were in good hands thanks to his very friendly manner.

We will definitely be back and are really looking forward to it. 🙂

Kind regards Louisa & Flo
