Channeling the pummeling savagery of Black Flag and the free form bizarreness of the Boredoms, Lightning Bolt embodies a dichotomy of visceral fun and cathartic terror. Their sound assaults the senses leaving the listener exhilarated, but not free from questioning what they just experienced.

Brian Chippendale and Brian Gibson met and formed Lightning Bolt while attending Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island. Chippendale acted as the group’s drummer and Gibson assumed the role of bassist. Shortly after playing their first show Hisham Bharoocha entered as guitarist/vocalist; however, he left in 1996 to join another Rhode Island noise project called Black Dice. Chippendale took over as the group’s lead vocalist.

Much of Lightning Bolt’s early work was strictly improvisational. They toured frequently around the United States, but were not serious about recording material until 1997. They presented many of their early ideas at the venue Fort Thunder, a warehouse in the Olneyville district that Chippendale and his art school friends Matt Brinkman and Brian Ralph converted into a performance space.

Over the years the group concocted a sound unlike anything heard at that time. Though they cite minimalist composers like Phillip Glass as an influence their work is more akin to the sludge metal work of Melvins, atonal escapades of Sonic Youth and the freneticism of Melt-Banana. Though all these influences can be detected in their style, their music never sounds like mimicry. Their experimental nature is one key in preventing this. Chippendale’s drumming is sporadic and brooding and implements special effects such as the KMD 8021 Drum Exciter. His vocal presentation is also entirely unorthodox but incredibly unique. Instead of singing in a traditional microphone he employes the type used in a telephone receiver, attaching it to a mask and running it through multiple effects pedals. Gibson is noted for playing his bass guitar in standard cello tuning and for using banjo strings for A and E. Gibson likewise alters his sound with a hoard of effects pedals and generally plays at ear-shattering volumes.

Though Lightning Bolt prefers playing live verses recording in a studio, they have put out seven albums as of 2015. Their self-titled studio debut came out in 1999 through Love Records and was originally pressed on a limited run of 750 vinyl copies, which was accompanied by a cassette release of the bonus track “Zone”. A CD version of the album was later issued with the inclusion of the bonus track.

“Ride the Skies” saw release in 2001 and was critically lauded by Pitchfork and Robert Christgau. Their 3rd album “Wonderful Rainbow” claimed even more attention and was included on Pitchfork’s top 200 albums of the 2000s, Tiny Mix Tapes’ best albums of the 2000s and in the book “1001 Albums You Must hear before You Die”. Their follow up “Hypermagic Mountain” perhaps generated the most critical acclaim of the group’s entire career, landing at no. 42 on Metacritic’s all-time highest rated albums list. Despite the group’s lo-fi approach of recording the album onto a 2 track DAT master tape, this album is considered one of their most accessible and consistent releases.

Lightning Bolt’s next album “Earthly Delights” did not come out until four years later, but like it’s predecessors it received high praise. In 2012 they issued their 6th studio album “Oblivion Hunter” and in 2015 they put out “Fantasy Empire”, which marked their 1st album to be released through the label Thrill Jockey.

This was my first Lightning Bolt concert and it certainly isn't my last- these guys know just how I like my tinnitus.

My unfamiliarity with their music is laughable, although I do appreciate the themes that noise rock has to offer; grit, passion, endurance. Why not check these guys out at the Chapel, a great venue on Valencia street in San Francisco?

If there is anything to be said that isn't inherently obvious, it's that Lightning Bolt are not snobby in the slightest. Drummer and vocalist Brian Chippendale, in a somewhat prideful manner, sets his kit up himself- engaging with fans who squeezed themselves into the front row for an opportunity for small talk that he'll certainly entertain. Bassist and chief noisemaker Brian Gibson arrived just as punctually- maybe five minutes after opener Liturgy (side note: great drummer) packed their instruments. Beer in hand, he sets his pedals up and in no time the noise begins.

The show itself was loud enough that i'm still feeling it the next day (WEAR EARPLUGS KIDS), and the crowd was certainly into it, shoving and from the first note until the end drone. Gibson's lax style of fucking my ears up paired with Chippendale's energy and personality is kind of refreshing- the focus of a wise old man and the enthusiasm of a kid playing on his first tour (not to take away from the difficulty of drumming while singing for an hour and a half) makes for a chemistry that is front and center- everyone knows their roles and everyone performs those roles to the best of their ability. Gibson's stoicism doesn't take anything away from the personality of his bass guitar and Chippendale sings like many do in the shower- with passion and security, only serving to add to the organized chaos that is his percussion.

Shoving, screaming, near deafening noise levels- everything about this show seems like something out of a metal or screamo concert but what makes Lightning Bolt Lightning Bolt is the smile on their music's face as it physically and mentally fucks you up. Everything about the band from it's music to it's aesthetic is an earthquake in a radioactive paint factory. A strange metaphor for two people who on the outside seem like pretty average guys, sipping beer and saying hi when said hi to. Which just goes to show how selfless one can become when all of your passion is injected into what you love most. It doesn't seem to be about the image; it's about the art. It's hard not to back these guys %100 and it's even harder not to enjoy yourself at one of their shows. Noise rock isn't for everyone, but for the open-minded individual looking for a rowdy good time with some noise that would make any mom question your judgment, check out a Lightning Bolt concert.

Lightning bolt are a delightful noise-rock duo hailing from Providence, Rhode Island, made up of a pair of Brians, Brian Chippendale on drums and Brian Gibson on the bass guitar. I had heard the band had a knack for playing in the middle of the floor with the audience around them, feeding off the energy, but I had no such luck, they were nevertheless lively and unrestrained.

There was relentless movement, relentless sound, relentless vibrations, and relentless hustle and bustle from the crowd around me, and relentless energy from the Brians, who I’m pretty sure were giving everything they had. It’s the first band where I’ve seen the drummer pretty much stand up more than he was sitting down, he was restless and he was hitting those drums so damn hard, he must have broken about 8 sticks during the set, and how he maintains such complex rhythms I have no idea.

And the bass has such a luxuriously distorted fuzz and buzz, so much so you feel the sound will break out of the room and try to impose itself on other spaces. The band is distinctively lo-fi but holds so much power, they even played on the doorstep of the radio DJ John Peel during the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in 2004.

Superb High-End speaker system, able to reproduce the filled and complex passages of this music event or specially the Industrial parts in last one´s A L'ARME opening party. Clearly, that is why this location is getting chosen for atmospheric sound events periodically. I can not comment on club nights, but concerts at these coordinates are from sound enthusiasts for sound enthusiasts. Thanks to the acts and the hosts.

Lightning Bolt play with abandon that is unmatched and remarkably undiluted since the duo’s formation 25 years ago. They are often called one of the loudest rock outfits in existence, both on record and on (or famously, off) the stage. Brian Gibson creates sounds that are unexpected and remarkably varied with his virtuosic bass playing and his inventive approach to the instrument, centered around melody rather than rhythm. The dizzying fury of Brian Chippendale’s drums twist from primal patterns into disorienting break beats as his distorted, looped, and echoing vocals weave more melody into the mayhem. Amidst the fray there has always been shreds of a pop songs discernible in the eye of every Lightning Bolt song. For their seventh full length,  Sonic Citadel , Gibson and Chippendale have done the daring, stripping away some of the distortion mask to reveal the naked pop forms as never before. Their relentless energy, inventiveness and, unrestrained joy still drive their songs, pulling you in and compelling you to bounce and yes, even sing along.

Over their career Lightning Bolt’s incomparable sound has been built on the ebb and flow between the power of raw, unbridled simplicity and a boundless, childlike sense of wonder.  Sonic Citadel  marks the duo’s most varied and diverse work since their seminal album  Wonderful Rainbow , exploring a large breadth of emotions between and within each song. Gibson and Chippendale again recorded with Seth Manchester at the esteemed Machines With Magnets to capture the abandon of their music with clarity and Gibson’s incredible dynamic range clearly to make the record as visceral an experience as their live performances. The pummeling “Blow To The Head” and swirling “Van Halen 2049” bookend the album with two of the most ferocious songs in the band’s catalogue, with the former built as a Black Pus (Brian Chippendale’s solo outlet) track on steroids. In stark contrast, songs like “Don Henley In The Park,” and “All Insane” take on almost conventional pop shapes despite being entirely spontaneous pieces crafted in the studio. “Hüsker Dön’t” too defies expectations as one of the poppiest songs in their discography with a chugging but clear chord progression and some of Chippendale’s least distorted vocals. These wildly varying approaches are a testament to the duo’s immeasurable capacity to explore new sonic territory organically, and largely through improvisation.

For the bulk of Lightning Bolt’s work together, they have slowly molded improvised jams which sometimes take years to develop on the road. The song “Halloween 3” may sound familiar to fans who have seen the band live in the last 15 years, and is named after a popular video of the duo performing an early version of the song.  Sonic Citadel , however, also prominently features songs which began as solo recordings, be it a Black Pus 4-track recording or a series of looped bass figures from Gibson. In the four years between album releases, each member’s increasingly prolific creative endeavors limited their time to create together. Brian Gibson was the sole artist, musician and co-designer of the acclaimed video game Thumper , which has since proliferated across a multitude of platforms, and won countless awards including the 2019 Apple Design Award . Brian Chippendale, who has always created the band’s visual art, released the graphic novel  Puke Force , was included in Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Drummers of All Time,” and recently collaborated with fashion designers Eckhaus Latta . Coupled with their consistent touring, as well as Chippendale recently becoming a father, the duo took the challenge of their time constraints head on as a compositional tool. By keeping some songs more direct and focusing on their central ideas, the duo managed to increase the overall intensity of their music while leaving space to for the songs to breath and stretch out live.

The impact that Lightning Bolt has had on underground music since its inception is immense, and remains pervasive beyond any genre tag that has been attached to them.  Sonic Citadel  is the work of band unafraid to challenge themselves, unbound by expectations, joyfully defiant, and possessed of the same inventive curiosity which set them apart on day one and is unmatched still 25 years later.

Rhode Island noise rock heroes Lightning Bolt are heading out on a two-week tour this spring, hitting up the southeastern corner of the country. The group—who recently reissued their 2009 album Earthly Delights —will begin their brief run of dates in April in Atlanta, heading down into Florida, New Orleans and then over into Texas. The duo play in the noise rock genre, an experimental style that combines industrial elements with punk rock. The duo was instrumental in establishing Fort Thunder, an incubator for local avant-garde musicians. They released their first album in 1998 after developing the songs at Fort Thunder.

Lightning Bolt’s most critically acclaimed album came in 2005 however, Hypermagic Mountain . Their sound makes use of high-speed drumming and heavily distorted vocals and is even louder and more aggressive than traditional punk rock. Lightning Bolt  have announced U.K. and European tour dates for summer 2022, with more to be announced. The run includes a set at  Primavera Sound Festival  in Barcelona, Spain alongside  Bikini Kill ,  Shellac, Autechre  and more. The tour follows the release of the duo’s latest studio album,  Sonic Citadel  and the recent reissues of seminal titles from the band’s catalog, including new pressings of  Ride the Skies  on baby blue sky vinyl, the duo’s self-titled debut on yellow vinyl, and  Hypermagic Mountain  on hyperglobby pink vinyl.  Lightning Bolt  play with abandon that is unmatched and remarkably undiluted since the duo’s formation 25 years ago. They are often hailed as one of the loudest rock outfits in existence, both on record and on (or famously, off) the stage.  Brian Gibson  creates sounds that are unexpected and remarkably varied with his virtuosic bass playing and his inventive approach to the instrument, centered around melody rather than rhythm. The dizzying fury of  Brian Chippendale’s  drums twist from primal patterns into disorienting break beats as his distorted, looped, and echoing vocals weave more melody into the mayhem. Watch Metallica get upstaged by lightning bolts during Master Of Puppets on the opening night of their latest tour

There are few things that can upstage Metallica in full flight, but Mother Nature is one of them.

The opening night of the latest leg of the metal icons’ M72 tour was lit up – literally – by a series of perfectly timed lightning strikes which occurred during Master Of Puppets .

The band were playing Munich’s open-air Olympiastadion on Friday, March 24 when a storm erupted overhead. Band and audience were forced to weather torrential rain during the show, visibly soaking James Hetfield and co to the bone.

But the storm saved the best to last, as lightning bolts lit up the sky just as the band kicked into set closer Master Of Puppets (sadly, not the title track of their second album, Ride The Lightning ). Luckily, several audience members captured this natural pyro display on their phones.

The band’s second show at the stadium two nights later was less meteorologically eventful, but it did mark the live debut of Inamorata , the epic, 11-minute closing track from last year’s 72 Seasons album.

James Hetfield recently revealed that he had been “ writing lots of music ” while Metallica have been off the road. The singer told The Metallica Report podcast: “[I’ve been] playing guitar pretty much every day. I have to. It’s like breathing.”

He adds: “Whether it’s an escape from life or whatever it is, I love my little music room basement. I’ve got a computer, a few guitars and a little rig set up. It is my soul-nourishing place, to go in there and just play and write. Not so much practicing, it’s just writing.”

Metallica release pro-shot ‘Master of Puppets’ footage with lightning in Munich

The moment went viral during the band’s ongoing ‘72 Seasons’ tour

Metallica have released pro-shoot footage of their ‘Master of Puppets’ performance in Munich, Germany, which took place on May 24. Watch the clip below.

The performance went viral last month due to the weather that took place above the open-air Olympiastadion stadium – amidst heavy rain, as the band ripped into the song’s iconic opening riff, a bolt of lightning appeared in the sky.

A fan filmed the incident and tweeted about it: “Went to the Metallica concert in München today, a thunderstorm happened and it made for the coolest fucking intro of all time”.

NME spoke with the band last year , where drummer Lars Ulrich opened up about the impact of Stranger Things using ‘Master of Puppets’ during a key scene in the show’s season four finale.

“We see a lot of 13 to 14-year-olds coming for the first time,” said Ulrich. “There’s always been a coming-of-age element to our shows, and just look at the Stranger Things phenomena of last summer.

“That came out of nowhere and all of a sudden introduced Metallica to a whole other set of younger people.”

Metallica are currently embarking on a tour supporting their latest album, 2023’s ‘72 Seasons’. As part of the itinerary, the band performs two sets in every city with different setlists and opening acts.

On the band’s second performance in Munich (May 26), they debuted ‘Inamorata’ , a ‘72 Seasons’ track that’s also the longest recording of an original Metallica song in their discography – at just over 11 minutes.

The honour of Metallica’s longest recording overall goes to ‘Mercyful Fate’. A medley of covers paying tribute to the work of the titular Danish heavy metal band, its runtime of 11:11 edges out ‘Inamorata’ by a second. ‘Mercyful Fate’ is included in the band’s 1998 compilation album ‘Garage Inc’.

As for the album ’72 Seasons’ itself, NME ’s Kevin EG Perry called it “a ragged beast that explodes out of the traps and never lets up” in a four-star review .
