Banyuwangi Guide – What To Eat, Where To Stay, & Things To Do On Java Island’s East Coast

banyuwangi regency tourism map

Food, hotels, and things to do in Banyuwangi

Located at the eastern tip of Java Island, Banyuwangi has become the final pit stop of plenty of backpackers before hitching a ferry to Bali just across the horizon. While that’s completely fine, we feel that Banyuwangi itself is worth an extended stay once you’ve seen what the region has in store.

From the world-famous blue flames of Kawah Ijen to the towering monkeypod trees of De Djawatan Forest, there are more than enough distractions here to keep you occupied. To help you fill up your itinerary, this guide on what to eat, where to stay, and things to do in Banyuwangi should help you find your inspiration.

– Things to do in Banyuwangi –

1. see the mesmerizing blue flames of the world-famous kawah ijen.

kawah ijen blue flame banyuwangi

It’s not in any way hyperbolic to say that Kawah Ijen , or Ijen Crater, is what helped put Banyuwangi on the global tourism map. Once featured in a National Geographic story, Ijen is famous for its otherworldly blue flames by the crater lake, a result of high-temperature sulfur gas being exposed to oxygen, presenting a sight you can scarcely see anywhere else.

kawah ijen

While it’s as mesmerizing as advertised, you’d have to be comfortable with the idea of night hiking as that’s the only time this blue flame phenomenon is visible. Hikers typically start their journey from the Paltuding Base Camp after midnight, hoping to catch sight of the blue flames before bookending the trip with Ijen’s equally gorgeous sunrise views.

mount raung

The 3km hike to the top of the caldera is fairly easy even for first-time hikers and there are wheelbarrow taxi services available if you feel you won’t be able to make it alone. The catch is your chance to see the blue flame from there is a bit of a lottery as there are nights when the smoke gets too thick for anyone to see past them.

In those times, you’ll have to make your way down to the sulfur mine and soldier through the toxic sulfur gas armed with gas masks available to rent from the basecamp. Even if you don’t have a history of breathing problems, this hike down and up back to the base of the crater is dangerous and hiring a guide to help you navigate the trail is a must.

kawah ijen miners

Along the way, you’re probably going to see some sulfur miners carrying around 70kg of sulfur on the narrow trail and it’s important that you give them the right of way. Mining toxic sulfur, nicknamed the “Devil’s Gold” for a reason, is a tough way to make a living and the least you could do is to show them proper respect.

kawah ijen lake

From the mine, you can also head over to the caldera lake. While the turquoise hot water might seem perfect for a bath, it’s highly acidic and you should always keep your distance, let alone try to dip your toes in.

Address: Paltuding Base Camp, Curah Macan, Tamansari, Licin, Kabupaten Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur 68454 Opening hours: 24 hours, Daily Admission fee: Rp. 100,000 (~USD7.11) on weekdays and Rp. 150,000 (~USD10.67) on weekends for foreigners, Rp. 15,000 (~USD1.67) on weekdays and Rp. 25,000 (~USD1.78) on weekends for locals

2. Take a stroll under De Djawatan Forest’s ancient, towering monkeypod trees

de djawatan forest

Roughly a one-hour drive away from the city center, De Djawatan Forest is another lovely spot in Banyuwangi if you’re looking to escape the tropical heat. The gigantic monkeypod trees, here called trembesi , provide plenty of shade from the sun whether you’re having a picnic or simply taking a stroll through the woods.

If you don’t feel like walking, you can always hitch a ride with one of the ATVs for rent inside the forest. Do be careful when riding one though, as the forest’s ATV routes are also popular among families and shutterbugs looking to capture the forest’s unique sights on foot.

de djawatan

Locals like to think of the forest and its towering trees as if it’s a film set straight out of the Lord of the Rings . While that comparison is a bit of a stretch, there’re still plenty of great sights to be found here and the rays of sunlight penetrating the forest’s thick canopies are guaranteed to melt your heart.

Address: Purwosari, Benculuk, Cluring, Kabupaten Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur 68482 Opening hours: Tue–Sun 8AM-5PM | Closed Mondays Admission fee: Rp. 5,000 (~USD0.36)

3. Swim with actual baby sharks at Bangsring Underwater

bangsring underwater

Started by an environmentally conscious community of fishermen, Bangsring Underwater is a marine conservatory area that is slowly becoming one of Banyuwangi’s most unique spots. This is probably the only time we’d recommend you to actually ditch the beach and head offshore as that’s where the fun begins.

bangsring underwater sharks

The Bangsring Floating House is visible from the shore and while it’s possible to swim all the way there if you’ve got the guts, we’d prefer the comfort of the boat. This is where they hold the shark conservatory program and you can partake in a shark-feeding activity or jump down directly and swim alongside the adorable baby sharks.

These baby sharks are those that had found their way into fishermen’s nets by mistake, and that are then brought here to be nursed back to health before being released into the wild once more.

bangsring underwater diver

Not to worry, they’re completely harmless but if you’d rather not take the chance, the surrounding water has plenty of equally cool sights to see. Dive to the bottom and you’ll find coral restoration projects all over the area with clownfish among the surrounding anemones.

Address: Jl. Situbondo – Banyuwangi, Bangsring, Kabupaten Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur Opening hours: 7AM-6PM, Daily Admission fee: Rp. 5,000 (~USD0.36)

4. Take in the serenity of the uninhabited Tabuhan Island

tabuhan island

While there’s enough fun to be had in Bangsring Beach, those looking for a more pristine spot to relax on might want to look just a little further. Just 15 minutes away by boat is the uninhabited Tabuhan Island , although islet is the proper term, and we can hardly find a better beach to sit idly by on than this quiet enclave.

tabuhan island beach

There’s little to do here on the island except to take in the serenity and it’s this almost nothingness that makes Tabuhan so appealing. Simply circling the beach and sitting down at the secluded island with the Ijen Crater visible across the horizon is a pleasure in and of itself.

tabuhan island snorkeling

As it is an uninhabited island, there’s no place to get some food or relieve yourself on the island so you might want to make sure everything’s sorted out back at Bangsring Beach.

In the same vein, we recommend carrying a bag to store your trash in when going to Tabuhan – as with a lack of waste recycling facilities here, it’s up to us to maintain the island’s pristine beauty.

5. Pose with the dancer sculptures of Terracotta Gandrung Park

terracotta gandrung park

While not quite at the scale of China’s famed Terracotta Army, the terracotta dancers in Terracotta Gandrung Park are definitely giving them a run for their money. Shaped after gandrung dancers, who practice the traditional Javanese dance popular in Banyuwangi, these sculptures imbue the place with an almost surreal beauty.

terracotta gandrung park dancers

They start to make sense when you consider the park’s main goal though, which is to preserve the legacy of gandrung itself. To that end, the park regularly holds gandrung dance performances in the amphitheatre, surrounded by picturesque rice fields and the pleasantly chill atmosphere of the Licin neighborhood right at the foot of Mount Ijen.

terracotta gandrung park amphitheater

As the park shares a space with the Jiwa Jawa Resort complex, it’s one of the few spots in Banyuwangi where you can expect relatively luxurious amenities. There are plenty of dining options to choose from and in contrast to some of Indonesia’s more rural attractions, you can relieve yourself with little worry in the park’s relatively well-maintained bathrooms.

Address: Krajan, Tamansari, Licin, Kabupaten Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur 68454 Opening hours: Tue–Thu 8AM-4PM, Fri – Sun 7AM-5PM | Closed Mondays Admission fee: Rp. 10,000 (~USD0.72)

6. Sip freshly roasted coffee on your hike of the Kalibendo Plantation

kalibendo coffee beans

For those who enjoy the smell of freshly roasted coffee beans, Kalibendo Plantation might just tickle your fancy. Located just a short drive away from the Terracotta Gandrung Park, this agritourism destination also has a walking trail where you can sip fresh, homegrown coffee before enjoying the surrounding greenery.

kalibendo plantation visitor

While the coffee’s pretty great, the main attraction in the plantation can be found further along into the trail, past the rows of rubber trees dotted around the plantation. Once you’ve come across the river you know you’re close as just upstream is the Kalibendo Waterfall that marks the midpoint of the trail.

kalibendo waterfall

At the waterfall, you can either wet your feet by dipping them into the clear spring water or take in the serenity from the treehouse right across. For hikers worn out after their midnight hike of Ijen, the relaxing walk and the sight of the tranquil waterfall might just be exactly what they need to soothe those weary bones.

kalibendo coffee workers

The trail eventually circles back to the processing plant where commodities from the plantation are further processed before being sold. The building itself dates back to the Dutch occupation era and you can still find artifacts left over from that time still preserved in the building.

kalibendo coffee 1911 cafe

To cap off your visit, we recommend taking a load off at the 1911 Cafe just down the road from the processing plant. If you can’t get enough of the coffee, there are coffee beans here for sale for you to brew back at home or if you just want a little Banyuwangi souvenir.

Address: Dusun Kalibendo, Kampung Anyar, Glagah, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java 68432 Opening hours: 6.30AM-10.30PM, Daily Admission fee: Rp. 5,000 (~USD0.36)

7. Explore the natural beauty of Alas Purwo National Park

alas purwo national park

With a size of around two-thirds of Jakarta, Alas Purwo National Park and all it has to offer will take you an entire week to see. This nature reserve that’s a ninety-minute drive away to the south of the city center is so expansive that we recommend coming up with a detailed itinerary of all the places you want to check out beforehand.

sadengan savannah

Just a few minutes’ drive from the entrance is the lovely Sadengan Savannah where you can spot dozens of species, including bulls, deer, and peacocks, roaming the lands. This is a prime spot for animal-watching, so bring your own binoculars to the watchtower here where you can see how the animals behave in their own habitat.

sadengan savannah picnic table

It’s the atmosphere that makes the savannah special though as such landscapes are pretty rare in this side of the world. We’re more than happy to just unpack our lunch and take in the surroundings from the picnic tables set up around the tower, but the friendly park rangers are usually also available for a conversation or two if you’re looking for company.

jati papak mangrove trail

Lesser known but just as rewarding is the Jati Papak Mangrove Trail that snakes through a mangrove plantation and ends at a picturesque platform that opens up to the Bali Sea. The trail is an ideal place to get some off-the-grid downtime, but do be warned that there’s practically no shade along the scenic wooden walkway.

plengkung beach g-land surfing

For those with a taste for extreme sports, Alas Purwo is also home to the Plengkung Beach , or as the surfing community calls it, G-Land . The beach has one of the best surf breaks in the world and you can find several surf camps set up along the southern end of the beach where you can swap stories with surfers looking to take a crack at the waves.

Do note that Alas Purwo has a reputation among some superstitious locals as a hotbed of mystical activities – so just to be on the safe side, we recommend finding some company and to mind your behavior once you’re inside the park.

Address: Jl. Kalipait, Gempoldampit, Kedungwungu, Tegaldlimo, Kabupaten Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur 68484 Opening hours: Mon–Fri 7.30AM-4PM | Closed Sat and Sun Admission fee: Rp. 150,000 (~USD10.68) for foreigners, Rp. 5,000 (~USD0.36) for locals

8. Take a road trip to Baluran National Park for its savannah

baluran national park

It speaks to the charm of Banyuwangi that it has not only one but two savannas in the region, the other being the Bekol Savannah inside Baluran National Park . Locals dub the savannah as the country’s ‘little Africa’ and for once, that comparison is actually pretty spot-on.

baluran national park savannah

Much more expansive with much less greenery compared to the one in Alas Purwo, the Bekol Savannah consistently draws in budding photographers and social media celebrities hoping to use the foreign-looking Baluran to glam up their portfolio – and we can hardly blame them.

baluran national park peacocks

Because of the size, finding the herds of buffalo and deer that call the savanna home is actually harder here, with the monkeys being the only exception. Try to have a picnic under the tree by the side of the road and the monkeys can, and will, mess up your lunch plans. Always take care of your belongings when stepping out of your car.

bama beach

While it’s not as biologically diverse as Alas Purwo, with only the Bama Beach being the sole other point of interest, Baluran is easier to reach. It’s only a forty-five minute drive away from the city center and you’re unlikely to get lost inside, as there’s only a single road that stretches through the savanna before ending at the beach.

Address: Jl. Entry Taman Nasional Baluran, Randu Agung, Wonorejo, Kec. Banyuputih, Kabupaten Situbondo, Jawa Timur 68374 Opening hours: 8AM-4PM, Daily Admission fee: Rp. 150,000 (~USD10.70) on weekdays and Rp. 225,000 (~USD16.05) on weekends for foreigners, Rp. 15,000 (~USD1.07) on weekdays and Rp. 17,500 (~USD1.25) on weekends for locals

9. Catch the gorgeous sunset at Pulau Merah Beach

pulau merah beach

Gorgeous sunset views in Banyuwangi, nicknamed the Sunrise of Java for a reason, might sound like an oxymoron but that’s exactly what Pulau Merah Beach has in store. Located to the south of the city, this beach is one of the few sunset-viewing spots in the region.

pulau merah beach sunset

Relatively untouched by civilization, Pulau Merah Beach, or the Red Island Beach, is named after the hilly island directly across from the beach. While it’s now covered in trees, the island itself was once covered in red soil, hence the name.

During low tide, it is actually possible to wade through the shallow waters and reach the island by foot, like Banyuwangi’s very own Tanah Lot. Do note that the rocks around the area is home to a population of starfishes and sea urchins so make sure you’re wearing proper footwear before making the trip.

wedi ireng beach

If you’ve got time, check out the more secluded Wedi Ireng Beach just a few kilometers to the west. It’s considerably more difficult to reach, accessible only by boat or a hike through the forest path, but the stunning vista is worth all the effort.

Address: Dusun Pancer, Sumberagung, Pesanggaran, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java 68488 Opening hours: 7AM-7PM, Daily Admission fee: Rp. 10,000 (~USD0.71)

10. Help care for newly hatched baby turtles at Sukamade Beach

sukamade beach

Reaching the far-off Sukamade Beach from Banyuwangi city center requires a roughly five-hour journey through rough terrain, including wading through several actual rivers. Only the toughest four-by-fours can survive the trip, so you’re going to have to rent one together with hiring a driver, but we promise you that the beach is worth all the hassle.

sukamade beach turtle

This stretch of sand inside the Meru Betiri National Park is home to the country’s premier turtle conservation program. At peak season from November to March, plenty of turtles make their way to the shore at night to lay eggs and it’s the park rangers’ duty to safeguard the eggs from predators by moving them to the park’s hatchery.

sukamade beach turtles

The next morning, the newly hatched baby turtles are released back into the ocean and you can observe these two magical experiences firsthand. The joy that comes from seeing the adorable baby turtles as they race to the ocean is enough to melt even the most cynical among us.

green bay beach near sukamade

Accommodation around the beach is pretty basic but it’s the experience, not the luxury, you’re here for after all. As reaching the area takes quite a bit of an effort, a visit to Sukamade is usually bundled together with a short trip to the hidden, untouched paradise of Green Bay Beach to the east of Sukamade.

Do note that we highly recommend booking a tour if you’re looking to visit Sukamade as the area is isolated from civilization. There’s barely any cell phone reception in the area and unless you have an inside line to the rangers, sorting out your visit and finding accommodation in the area require plenty of prior planning.

Address: Jln. Sukamade No. 99, Dusun Sukamande, Sarongan, Pesanggaran, Kabupaten Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur 68488 Opening hours: 24 hours, Daily Admission fee: Rp. 20,000 (~USD1.43) for entry to the national park

11. See the many, many festivals of Banyuwangi

gandrung sewu festival

There’s never a bad time to visit Banyuwangi but if you’re looking to get the most out of your stay, try to coincide your visit with the excess of annual festivals in the region. The headliners are the Gandrung Sewu Festival and the Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival but with hundreds held throughout the year, you’re going to be spoilt for choice.

Gandrung Sewu translates to ‘a thousand gandrung ’ and during the event, thousands of gandrung dancers flock to Banyuwangi’s Boom Beach to perform. The dancers are usually accompanied by a special public performance, which portrays the various struggles of the people of Banyuwangi against the Dutch colonials in the past.

banyuwangi ethno carnival

The Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival, meanwhile, is the region’s take on the famed Rio Carnival where participants take to the streets in elaborately colorful costumes. With unique themes in place each year, no two festivals will ever be the same but the level of fabulousness thankfully remains constant throughout.

– What to eat in Banyuwangi –

1. rujak soto – spicy fruit salad mixed with beef soup.

rujak soto

For those well-versed in the world of Indonesian cuisine, the union of the spicy fruit salad rujak and the soup-based dish soto is sure to raise eyebrows. But hear us out first because as unconventional as it might seem, Banyuwangi’s rujak soto is much more than the sum of its parts.

Essentially, the dish uses rujak mixed with lontong rice cakes as a base, which is then drowned in broth from the soto daging , or beef soto . The end result leaves diners with a dizzying mix of rujak ’s fresh spiciness and the savory taste of the soto and it’s this explosion of flavor that has tourists coming back for more.

In Banyuwangi, it is considered tradition to pair rujak soto with a refreshing glass of es temulawak , an iced drink made from the extract of Javanese ginger. These days, you can find rujak soto stalls all over the city but the one shop locals regularly flock to is the Rujak Soto Losari just off the street of the same name.

Address: Jln.Sukamade No.99, Dusun Sukamande, Sarongan, Pesanggaran, Kabupaten Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur 68488 Opening hours: 9AM-3PM, Daily Price range: Rp. 20,000-Rp. 25,000 (~USD1.43-USD1.78)

2. Pecel Rawon – vegetable salad in peanut sauce mixed with a different beef soup

pecel rawon

The Ijen Crater isn’t the only kind of adventure you’ll have in Banyuwangi as their cuisine is just as daring, with the region known for their eclectic fusion dishes. Luckily for us, they’re two for two so far because their pecel rawon , a union of the Indonesian salad pecel and the black beef soup rawon, is another winner.

Like before, the dish uses pecel as a base which is then mixed with rawon , the beef soup that gets its signature dark colour from the black nut seasoning known as kluwek . The resulting combo is then served with additional side dishes ranging from salted duck egg to rempeyek kacang , or Javanese nut crackers, adding much needed crunchiness to the dish.

Usually paired with a plate of rice, pecel rawon has an even more eclectic flavor profile with spiciness, saltiness, and just a hint of sweetness of the rawon mixed all over. If you’re looking to have a taste, locals typically name Rumah Makan Pecel Ayu as the best warung pecel in town.

Address: Jl. Adi Sucipto No.76, Sobo, Kec. Banyuwangi, Kabupaten Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur 68418 Opening hours: 6.30AM-8.30PM, Daily Price range: Rp. 15,000-Rp. 25,000 (~USD1.07-~USD1.78)

3. Sego Tempong – mixed rice dish with a devilishly spicy chili sauce

sego tempong

In Javanese, the word sego means ‘rice’ while tempong is the local slang for ‘to slap’ and sego tempong is named so because eating one feels like being slapped in the face. This is courtesy of the chilli sauce used in the dish and as Indonesians never mess around when it comes to their sambal, you know the name means business.

The dish comes from the Osing people of Banyuwangi and typically consists of rice, boiled vegetables, sambal, and as many side dishes as you like. Each sego tempong stall usually has its own recipe for the sambal with the only common theme being just how spicy they are.

One of the more well-known variations comes from Sego Tempong Mbok Wah , which adds a wrinkled breed of tomato known as ranti with the chili sauce for a touch of freshness. If this is your first time, ask for the chili sauce to be served on a separate plate or we won’t be held responsible for what it’ll do to your bowels.

Address: Jl. Gembrung No.220, Lingkungan Watu Ulo R, Bakungan, Glagah, Kabupaten Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur 68431 Opening hours: 6.30AM-8.30PM, Daily Price range: Rp. 20,000-Rp. 25,000 (~USD1.43-~USD1.78)

4. Ayam Pedas – grilled chicken marinated in spiced coconut milk broth

ayam pedas

If your taste buds still haven’t been burned off by Mbok Wah’s plate of sego tempong , why not come back for round two with the region’s ayam pedas ? The name is Indonesian for spicy chicken and the dish is exactly what it says on the tin.

The chicken is grilled first before being marinated in spiced coconut milk for hours and it’s this latter process that allows all the spice to soak all the way through the chicken’s bones. It is then served together with the broth like a juiced-up, extra-hot variation of the Indonesian staple opor ayam .

ayam pedas santan

Today, there are plenty of warungs serving their own take of the dish but our pick still goes to the OG Ayam Pedas Haji Siti Ratinem . Having been around since the 70s, this family business’ torch has now been picked up by the younger generation but luckily, the ayam pedas is just as good, and as gloriously spicy, as ever.

Address: Dusun Krajan, Genteng Kulon, Genteng, Kabupaten Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur 68465 Opening hours: 12AM-3AM, 4PM-12AM, Daily Price range: Rp. 35,000-Rp. 50,000 (~USD2.50-USD3.57)

5. Tahu Walik – inside-out tofu filled with meat served with sambal petis

tahu walik

For Indonesians, gorengan, or fritters, aren’t just food, but a way of life. Plenty of regions have their own takes on gorengan and for the people of Banyuwangi, tahu walik is what they choose to bring to the calorie-filled table.

Tahu walik is a slang term for tahu dibalik which literally translates to inside-out tofu and refers to how the food is prepared. The tofu is first sliced open and turned inside out before being stuffed with a chicken and vegetable filing. It is then deep-fried to golden, crispy perfection before being served with a side of sambal petis .

In Banyuwangi’s cool climate, tahu walik stalls usually open past sunset, catering for locals looking for a warm evening snack. You can find them being served all over the city but the gold standard is said to be Tahu Walik Ibu Atun , also a favored late-night haunt for locals.

Address: Jl. Letjen Di. Panjaitan No.49, Kampungmandar, Lateng, Kec. Banyuwangi, Kabupaten Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur 68412 Opening hours: 4PM-10PM, Daily Price range: Rp. 12,000-Rp. 30,000 (~USD0.86-~USD2.14)

– Where to stay in Banyuwangi –

1. dialoog banyuwangi – luxurious beachfront hotel with an open-air restaurant.

dialoog banyuwangi resort

Banyuwangi might not be as well-developed as Bali just yet but in terms of luxurious accommodations, the region isn’t that far behind. The beachfront hotel Dialoog Banyuwangi is proof of that, with amenities such as a gym, a spa, and a sublime infinity pool as you’d expect from a contemporary luxurious property.

dialoog banyuwangi resort cabana

What makes Dialoog so dear to our hearts though is the poolside, open-air Casabanyu Restaurant where the food is just as stimulating as the view. Right next to the restaurant sits the hotel’s romantic cabana where we imagine plenty of ‘I do’s have been declared throughout the years.

Where to eat, stay, and things to do in Banyuwangi

With highly diverse attractions ranging from a crater with unique blue flames to an African-like savannah, Banyuwangi’s appeal deserves to be spoken in the same breath as Bali’s.

The next time you’re hankering to go on another trip to Bali for the umpteenth time, try to make time to hop across the strait to its less-explored neighbor Banyuwangi too.

Banyuwangi is a regency in East Java . Its capital city is at the eastern tip of Java Island in Indonesia .

Understand [ edit ]

Banyuwangi is at the easternmost tip of Java , and is best known for its ferry connection at Ketapang to Gilimanuk in Bali , which makes it a gateway for locals (or tourists) traveling by car to Bali from any of Java’s major cities (such as Jakarta ). It can also serve as a rest area for drivers, tourists, or locals, heading to Bali by land. This area has a lot more to offer though and it is becoming better known as a visitor destination in its own right. Banyuwangi is also the gateway to some stunning volcanic scenery on the Ijen Plateau as well as the main access point for the Baluran National Park , world renowned surfing at G-Land ( Grajagan ), and the remote Alas Purwo National Park .

By plane [ edit ], by train [ edit ].

There are several daily trains from Surabaya and Malang run by the national operator Kereta Api [dead link] , taking six hours, plus one daily train from Yogyakarta taking 13 hours. These trains run to -8.141284 114.397263 2 Ketapang , which is the station for ferries to Bali; the harbour is just 200 m away. Until 2020 this station was known as Banyuwangi Baru and may still appear as that on old signage and timetables, but it's 10 km north of Banyuwangi town centre.

If Banyuwangi is where you want to be, get off at -8.222974 114.340781 3 Banyuwangi Kota station (previously called Karangasem) which is on the west edge of town, 3 km from the centre.

By bus [ edit ]

  • Sri Tanjung ( 2 km south of Ketapang port ), ☏ +62 333 510635 . The main bus terminal. Surabaya is 285 km away by road, and buses take about 6 hours.

By boat [ edit ]

Ferries run 24 hours a day from Gilimanuk in Bali to Ketapang every 30 min. The journey takes about 45 minutes, although loading and unloading can take much longer. Price is Rp 7500 for foot passengers, but this credit must be loaded onto a smartcard in order to pass the turnstile. Buy the smartcard at a desk before the main ticket window. Multiple passengers may use the same smartcard, so try to find other tourists to pool the cost. Then, at the main ticket window, load onto it the number of entries required. The ferry operator is ASDP, ☏ +62 333 413730 .

The ticket can be bought via Ferizy's website or on the spot.

From Ketapang, blue bemos are available 09:00 to 15:00. Prices to downtown area or nearby are Rp 5,000 - 10,000 per person, but they will ask for 2 or 3 times that, the price will go down as you walk away. Another option is to take a metered taxi. The company Bosowa Taxi (dark blue looking taxis) operates the area, and if you don't see one nearby, you can call one at ☏ +62 333 414141 . Price to downtown Banyuwangi is around Rp. 51,000 (Aug 2015). Watch the meter as you arrive at your destination as the driver may switch it off the second you arrive

  • Marina Srikandi Fast Boat , Jl. Suwung Batan Kendal No. 8C, Denpasar Selatan , ☏ +62 631 729 818 (booking tickets), +62 819 98996688 (office) , [email protected] . Depart from Kedonganan Harbour in Bali to Blimbingsari everyday. The journey takes about 2 hours. Price is Rp. 375,000 for adult and free for child under 5 years .

By car [ edit ]

From Denpasar to Banyuwangi (via Gilimanuk), 3-4 hours must be spent; from Jakarta , it is a 15-hour drive; from Ngawi , it is a 6-hour drive (via tol Ngawi-Surabaya), 8-10 hour drive (the normal route)

Get around [ edit ]

Map

The main bus station in Banyuwangi is at Ketapang ferry terminal. From there, regular yellow coloured bemos and shuttle buses run into the capital city (Sri Tanjung bus terminal/Brawijaya bus terminal), and elsewhere in the vicinity. Becaks (horse-cart/pedicabs) are widely available in town.

Most surfers heading for G-Land are doing so from Bali, and transportation to the camps is part of their surf package. You can however reach G-Land independently with a bus from Sri Tanjung terminal to Benculuk (about 1 hour), where you change and catch another bus to Grajagan (about 30 minutes).

You can hire private jeeps with a driver in Banyuwangi. Vital for independent trips up to the Ijen Crater or for exploring the remote parts of the south eastern coastal National parks.

Alas purwo national park [ edit ].

banyuwangi regency tourism map

This is one of the more remote and least populated parks areas of Java, and one which is relatively under-visited due to both the difficulties of getting there and the lack of developed accommodation options. It is also an area of great mystical significance to the Javanese - local legend has it that this was the first area of the whole world to emerge from the ocean.

The park is largely flat with highest peak only 320 m and covers some 43,000 hectares. There are some beautiful, deserted beaches here as well as large swatches of lowland tropical forest. The world famous G-land surf camp is on the park borders.

The key access point to the park is the village of Triangulasi which is about 80 km south east of Banyuwangi. Before visiting you should make contact with the national park office in Banyuwangi at Alas Purwo National Park Head Office , Jl Brawijaya No. 20, ☏ +62 333 428675 . There is some very basic self-catering hut accommodation at Triangulasi, as well as a camping ground and the park office will be able to advise you on this.

Mammals to be seen inside the park include banteng (the buffalo of Java), asiatic wild dog, leopard cat, muntjac deer and ebony leaf monkey. The park's western beaches are noted turtle hatching areas with olive ridley, hawksbill, green and leatherback turtles all occurring.

The Ijen Plateau [ edit ]

Near Banyuwangi and Bondowoso, this is a spectacular area of volcanic activity. The Ijen Plateau is the centre point of the large mountain range west of Banyuwangi and abuts the Baluran National Park to the north.

The Ijen Crater ( Kawah Ijen ) can be approached from Bondowoso in the west or Banyuwangi in the east. Both come together at the parking, from where you can go up to the crater. Neither road is good, but the Bondowoso route is easier. The trip can be done during the day or night (departing around 01:00). The latter is the popular choice as that's the only time the "blue fire" can be seen.

From Bondowoso you are best off finding a guide with a car (preferably a 4x4) who will drive you through the village of Wonosari and eastwards up a very basic potholed road which winds its way up the mountain. You will pass through the native casuarina forest and extensive coffee plantations before the road end at the village of Jampit where there is some shelter available ( Pos Paltuding ). If you are travelling late in the day, you could actually bed down with a sleeping bag or camp here as you could in the disused vulcanology station huts slightly further up the mountain.

From Banyuwangi to the parking lot takes about 1,5 hours by car. Most tourists will have a tour that includes transport on a 4x4, but the road is made of asphalt, and any car in good shape will be able to make it to the parking lot. However the road is narrow, curvy, and very steep in some parts, and driving at night can be dangerous.

At 2:00, the trailhead to the crater opens and entry fees are collected. The hike takes about 90 minutes and gains about 500 meters. The trail is wide and easy to follow, but is sandy and slippery in places. The colour of the water in the lake is scarcely believable, being an extraordinary vivid aqua blue. Evidence of volcanic activity is everywhere with steaming water and brilliant yellow crystalline sulfur deposits. You will see many workers trudging up and down the mountain carrying sacks of sulfur, sacrificing their long-term health for about Rp1000 per kg of ore. At night, when the proper conditions are met, you may see the famous "blue fire" (ignited sulphuric gas) down near the lake.

From the rim, the hike into the crater and down to the lake is an additional 45 minutes. The trail becomes a rocky, steep, single-person trail, where only a few meters have a handrail. Have your gas mask accessible, as the fumes get thicker as you go down. Once at the bottom, the exposure to white smoke coming out of the sulfur pipes can be irritating to the eyes and it's difficult to breathe without a gas mask. You can see the mining operation at work, and if you made it to the bottom before first light, you can see the dazzling blue flames up close, between the plumes of noxious volcanic steam.

Safety is not up to western standards, so enter the crater at your own risk. Some people decide to not go down to the lake. Officially, access to the crater is restricted, and signs warn you not to enter. In practice, this is only enforced when volcanic activity is high, and guides explain this as a way for local government to avoid liability.

At night, the otherwise obvious path can be challenging, so you may want a guide. It can be as cold as 5° C at the top. Proper hiking gear is useful: at minimum you need sturdy sports shoes, a flashlight, and a layer warmer than a t-shirt.

Tours to Kawah Ijen vary in price depending on the travel agency/hotel where it is booked, but all of them offer the same services, which are broken down as follows:

  • Transport to/from Ijen: drivers will wait at the parking lot while tourists hike. Around Rp200,000 per person.
  • Entry fee: Rp100,000-150,000 (Sunday) per foreign person.
  • Guide: Rp150,000-250,000 per group.
  • Gas masks: professional "proper" masks are available for Rp50,000 each. They can be rented in the caldera, next to the trail that goes down to the bottom.
  • Snacks and water: extra.

Some of the places that offer this and other tours are:

  • Osing Vacation : Rp350,000-750,000 per person (July 2021).(+6285204932963)
  • Kampung Osing Inn (+6287852738711): Rp350,000-400,000 per person (August 2015).
  • Berlin Barat Hotel: Rp750,000 per person (August 2015).
  • Hotel Blanbangan: Rp700,000-1,200,000 per person (August 2015).

Discounts for the transport part are offered to groups of people that get into the same car.

Many other post-caldera cones and craters are within the caldera or along its rim. The largest concentration of post-caldera cones forms an E-W-trending zone across the southern side of the caldera. Coffee plantations cover much of the Ijen caldera floor, and tourists are drawn to its waterfalls, hot springs, and dramatic volcanic scenery.

Gandrung Dance [ edit ]

This is a highly-regarded art form in Banyuwangi, and one of the nicknames for the capital city is Gandrung. In Javanese, gandrung means hopelessly in love. The love in this case is directed to Dewi Sri, the goddess of rice. The performance is an homage to Dewi Sri in gratitude for the rice harvest. The performance is a very special cultural event with unique orchestration. Check at the Tourist Information Centre for scheduled performances.

Secret Gem in The East-Most of Java

Banyuwangi is the east-most city in Java, this is where the sun first rises in the morning throwing its welcoming rays over Java. This lush green island is densely populated. Banyuwangi Regency extends over an area of 5,800 square km, comprising the southern beaches brushed by the Indian Ocean, to the impressive Mt Raung that stands at 3,282 meters and Mt Merapi at 2,800 meters above sea level.

Eastern Haven

Mountain climbers can hike up from Banyuwangi to the stunning Ijen Crater and be amazed by its legendary blue flames that spring out among the yellow sulphurous rocks, which are cut and gathered manually by traditional miners. However, if you are planning to witness the magnificence of the blue fire, it is advised to not carry or wear any silver jewellery as the high amount of sulphur is going to tarnish it.

Secret Gem in The East-Most of Java

Not only famous for its blue fire, but Banyuwangi is also internationally known as the destination that has many perfect spots for surfing. Plengkung Beach in Banyuwangi is considered to have the second-best waves for surfing after Hawaii!

The beach that is famous with the name “G-Land” has a roll of waves with an average of seven rows, hence the title it has been given: “The Seven Giant Waves Wonder”.

Secret Gem in The East-Most of Java

Red Beach or “Pantai Merah” is the best alternative for those who are still beginners and looking for a less risky experience of surfing. In comparison to Plengkung Beach, Red Beach has almost no coral reefs along the beach line. Moreover, Red Beach has stunning views of sunsets that attract many international visitors and leaves them in awe!

Are you looking for an extreme challenge? Make your way through the waterway onto Tabuhan Island, which is located between Java Island and Bali Island, 20 kilometers away from the town of Banyuwangi. Different from other beaches, Tabuhan Island delivers an excitingly adventurous sensation of kite-surfing and wind-surfing.

How to Get Here

Indonesia’s second-largest city, Surabaya is connected directly from abroad by a number of international airlines. You can then connect through Garuda Indonesia or Lion Air flights from Surabaya to Banyuwangi Blimbingsari Airport. There are also daily flights from Bali to Banyuwangi.

The city of Banyuwangi is located around 239 km east of Surabaya, the capital of the province of East Java. You can travel from Surabaya to Banyuwangi by car or by train. You can also travel by car from any other large city in East Java to Banyuwangi.

If you wish to travel overland from Bali, catch the ferry at Gilimanuk port, on the western tip of Bali which sails to the port of Ketapang at Banyuwangi.

How to Get Around

It is best to rent a car at the airport or through your hotel/travel agent to explore the attractions around Banyuwangi. Make sure to have a sturdy and comfortable vehicle especially when you plan to visit the mountainous regions or the savannah, even though the roads are well constructed.

Nature Adventure

The town of Banyuwangi is the gateway to your explorations to watch wild animals roam freely in the reserve of Alas Purwo National Park, the oldest conservation area on Java Island. You can also go trekking through the savannah of Baluran National Park, where you can see the large Java water buffaloes called “banteng”, small Java mouse-deer known as “kancil”, peacocks, eagles, macaques, and also many other wild animals.

Secret Gem in The East-Most of Java

Are you looking for a unique spot? Green Bay or Sarongan Pesanggaran will astound you with its waters, which are green on the shores and turn to blue, as the water flows further away from the beach line. Its white sands and tropical atmosphere will give a similar feeling to Bali or Lombok.

Last but not least, you can travel to Sukamade Beach where turtles come to hatch their eggs. While on your way from Banyuwangi, you can also experience a true sensation of jungle exploration on the challenging wilderness of Meru Betiri National Park.

There, one can see, macaques, peacocks and other endemic species of birds. If you are planning to visit this National Park, make sure to do the best you can in participating in sustainable tourism efforts by avoiding littering and respecting the local community.

You can visit Blambangan Park, the landmark of the Banyuwangi Regency. Every night, you will be entertained by a bunch of cultural shows in a program held by the Banyuwangi Tourism Office named “Banyuwangi Culture Everyday”. Besides being a tourist attraction, this event is intended to appreciate the talents and hobbies of Banyuwangi’s young artists and also to preserve the Banyuwangi culture.

There are four authentic cuisines of Banyuwangi that you should taste while you are there. Tempong Riceconsists of steamed white rice served with steamed vegetables and raw condiment. It is perfect for those who love spicy food. If you’re looking for a distinctive breakfast meal in Banyuwangi, then a plate of Nasi Cawuk is all you need. This meal consists of white rice, savoury grated coconut, and grilled corn. Nasi Cawukis also topped with lemongrass sauce and steamed clover. 9 Exciting Things to Do in Banyuwangi for an Unforgettable Holiday

' src=

If you are in East of Java it is almost inevitable that you will visit Banyuwangi. The town is the gateway to Bali and it is the best place to stay if you want to visit Ijen Crater  and see the blue flames. Yet there is more to Banyuwangi than Ijen. The with beautiful beaches, great surf and stunning nature. To help you make the most of your time in the Banyuwangi and just what is available to tourists, here is a list of the 9 best things to do in Banyuwangi. Let’s get started with one of the best things–so far–to do in the region!

It’s easy to understand why the Midnight Ijen Crater Tour is so popular.

Ijen Crater

Ijen is an active volcano that looms over the town. The volcano is famous for its sulphur miners, striking yellow landscape and the blue flames that appear at night. It’s a 30-45 minute drive from Banyuwangi to Ijen. The cheapest way to visit Ijen is with a shared tour. The shared tour costs around Rp 185,000 per person (covers only the transport) with pick up in Banyuwangi area.

Wedi Ireng Beach

Wedi Ireng Beach is located 65 km to the South of Banyuwangi. The beach gets its name because of the color of the sand ( Wedi means ‘sand’ in Javanese and Ireng means ‘black.’ Ironically the sand is actually white, but there is black sand underneath the surface. The beach is not very busy and the perfect escape if you want to surround yourself with nature.

Sukamade is a great place for an off road adventure. Turtles also come to Sukamade Beach almost every night of the year to lay their eggs here.

Sukamade Beach

Sukamade Beach is located 96 km away from Bayuwangi in Meru Betiri National Park. The beach is famous as a turtle hatchery. Almost every day of the year turtles will come to Sukamade Beach to lay their eggs. You can arrange a guided tour to Sukamade Beach from Banyuwangi (and is probably one of the best things to do in Banyuwangi when you visit the area). The Sukamade Tour is a two day one night tour. On the tour you sleep overnight in the National Park (the accommodation is basic but clean) and go trekking in the evening to see the turtles come to lay their eggs. It’s an amazing experience. Find out how to visit Sukamade Beach here .

Pantai Plengkung

If you love to surf then you should add Plengkung Beach, often referred to as G-Land on your ‘to do list’ for your trip to Banyuwangi. This is a surf break for experienced surfers with shallow reef breaks and long barrel waves. The Plengkung Beach is isolated. There are a number of surf camps along the beach that you can stay at when you visit G-Land. Alternatively you can always visit the beach on a day trip from Bali.

View over the Savannah at Baluran National Park in East Java.

Baluran Savannah

The Baluran National Park is known as the African Savannah of Java. It’s a fitting description. The savannah (Zona Bekol) turns brown in the dry season and the park is surrounded on one side by the sea and ringed by hills and Ijen volcano. The park has a lot of wildlife. You can see buffalo, antelope, monkeys and peacock when you visit. For the best view of the park make sure to climb the watchtower. The best time to visit the National Park is either in the morning or close to sunset time. You can combine a visit to Baluran National Park with the Ijen Midnight Tour.

Tabuhan Island

Tabuhan Island is located 20 km from Banyuwangi. The best way to reach the island is with public boat. The island is about 5 square km and is surrounded by white sandy beaches with coral reefs offshore that are fed by the nutrient rich waters that flow in the channel between Bali and Java. There are lots of opportunities for deep diving and snorkelling on the surface. If you go snorkelling here expect to see sponges, crayfish, and lot of fish species. You can arrange dive tours from Banyuwangi to Tabuhan Island.

Blambangan Museum

Blambangan Museum is located in Banyuwangi. The museum has several exhibits on local culture and examples of local batik. The museum is quite old and will need significant investment if it is going to attract tourists. If you are spending a few days visiting Banyuwangi consider visiting the museum as there are some things of interest to see. If you are only passing through town quickly then don’t add this to your ‘to do’ list.

Red Island directly in front of the beach. The area is famous with surfers for its breaks.

The Red Island is 85 km from Banyuwangi. Few tourists visit the island, instead they come here for the beautiful beach, relaxed atmosphere and great surf. There are lots of small hotels and homestays along the beach, so it is possible to stay here for a few days. In fact if you just want a beautiful beach with few tourists then the Red Island is actually a nice place to go for a short holiday.

Hoo Tong Bio Temple

Hoo Tong Bio or Klenteng Banyuwangi (or some called it The Kongco Tan Hu Cin Jin Temple) is one of the few places to visit in Banyuwangi. The temple is dedicated to Chen Fu Zen and was built in estimation 1768–1784. He is a spiritual figure for many people in the Chinese Indonesian community who live in Bali, East Java and Lombok. You can find out more about Chen Fu Zhen Ren on this Wikipedia page.

Final Thoughts

When you start to really explore Banyuwangi you quickly realise just how many fun and interesting things there are to do in and around the town. Add Sukamade Beach and Meru Betiri National Park to your travel itinerary for an unforgettable off the beaten track experience. Alternatively for a cheap beach vacation, Red Island might be exactly what you are looking for.

Hi, sepertinya jam 1 pagi startnya. 😀

thank you for your suggestions. we’ll get to Banyuwangi at the end of July and have already planned ljen crater tour but not yet sukamade because we’d like to see if we find someone else interested to share costs. could you help us? do you know if other people hve the same interest, otherwise it is quite expensive! moreover do you know if it is possible to see any traditional dance or traditional costume/mask as they show during carnival or other ceremony? thank you Flavia

Hi Firsta, I’d like to suggest one destination. If you ‘re into underwater experience, the locals said Tabuhan Island is the most recommended dive site in the area. But when your time is limited, try to go to Bangsring instead (or commonly known as Desa Bangsring). It is located opposite to Tabuhan Island, just 30 minutes drive from the city. From what I heard, most of the corals were planted just about 10-20 years ago, as a contribution by the local fishermen who had destroyed the site in the ’80s during their fishing activities. But it turns out good nowadays. It offers a broad variety of corals with lots of swarming little angelfish, blue devil, clown fish, etc around. Beware of the current tho’, as it may get tricky at times.

banyuwangi regency tourism map

According to available historical data regarding the history of Blambangan, Banyuwangi was formed on the 18th of December, 1771. Prior to the Puputan Bayu War (Banyuwangi local language meaning the war fought in Bayu, now Kecamatan Songgon), there was a heroic war, when Blambangan warriors lead by Prince Puger (the son of Wong Agung Wilis) attacked the VOC force in Banyualit in 1768.

However, unfortunately the date of the event was not exactly recorded and there was an impression that the attack resulted in total defeat, but perhaps the enemy did not lose at all. Basically historical records of this event are extremely vague. It is known that during this battle Prince Puger died. After Lateng was destroyed, Wong Agung Wilis was captured and taken to Banda Island. Based on historical data, the name Banyuwangi cannot be separated from Blambangan Kingdom. Since the era of Prince Tawang Alun (1655-1691), Prince Sasranegara, Prince Mancanapua, Prince Danureja (1691-1736), Prince Danuningrat (1736-1763) and the time of occupation by Bali (1763-1767), the VOC had not been interested in entering and controlling Blambangan.

In 1743, the eastern part of Java (including Blambangan) was surrendered by Pakubuwono II to the VOC. The VOC felt that Blambangan belonged to them. It was temporarily considered a "stock good " that would be exploited when needed. Even when Prince Danuningrat wanted the aid of the VOC against Bali, the VOC was still not interested in Blambangan or the little part of Banyuwangi (at that time it was called Tirtaganda, Tirtoarum, or Tuyoarum). Then suddenly the VOC tried to annex Banyuwangi and secure the entire kingdom of Blambangan. During the five year war (1767-1772), the VOC attempted to annex Banyuwangi at the time that it was a thriving center of trade in Blambangan Kingdom dominated by the British. Finally, it is clear that the birth of the place, known eventually as Banyuwangi, started with the Puputan Bayu War. If the British had not occupied Banyuwangi in 1766, perhaps the VOC would not have annexed Blambangan in 1767, and the Puputan Bayu War would not have happened. There is obviously a strong correlation between the Puputan Bayu War and the birth of Banyuwangi. Therefore, December 18th, 1771 is appropriately designated as the birthday of Banyuwangi.

The Legend Of Banyuwangi The ruler of the kingdom of Blambangan, Raden Banterang, used to occupy the neighboring areas in order to expand his territory, including the Klungkung Kingdom of Bali. The outbreak of the Klungkung War destroyed such a small country. The king of Klungkung was killed on the battlefield, yet his daughter and son were able to escape and hide in the jungle.

One day, Raden Banterang and his commanders were inspecting his district while hunting. It was in the jungle that Raden Banterang met a beautiful lady named Ida Ayu Surati. She was then taken to Blambangan to be his wife. Raden Banterang and Ida Ayu Surati enjoyed a happy life in the palace.

When Raden Banterang was hunting one day, the lonely princess was surprised by the arrival of a dirty beggar asking for her pity. The princess was surprised to find that the beggar was her older brother, Agung Bagus Mantra. She promptly squatted and embraced her brother's legs. However, her great respect of her brother was not well accepted. Instead, she was tortured for she supposedly betrayed her noble family.

Agung Bagus Mantra asked his sister to kill Raden Banterang, but such a request was rejected. He was very angry with her and came up with a sly idea to slander Raden Banterang.

At first, Raden Banterang did not believe that his wife had been involved in a scandal with another man. Yet because of Agung's convincing words, he was finally influenced and therefore, his wife was dragged down to a small lake. Asking for compassion, Ida Ayu Surati tried to tell the truth and denied her husband’s accusation. Hearing his wife's explanation, the king became angrier and angrier. As a proof of her sacred love, she asked her husband to kill her. As a last request, she asked her husband to throw her dead body into the river. She said that if the water in the river smelled terrible, it meant that she had ever been sinful, but if it smelled fragrant it meant that she was innocent. Raden Banterang who was unable to control his emotions, soon stabbed his keris (dagger) into his wife's chest. She died instantly. The dead body of Ida Ayu Surati was quickly thrown into the dirty river. Raden Banterang was shocked to see the river suddenly become clean and as clear as glass with a fragrant smell. Raden Banterang screamed crazily and regretted his deed. He walked unsteadily and fell into the river screaming, "Banyuwangi, Banyuwangi, Banyuwangi!”

Another legend of Banyuwangi was taken from the story of Sri Tanjung Sidopekso. Once upon a time, a local ruler, King Sulahkromo, had a patih, R.Sidopekso. The wife of the patih, Sri Tanjung, was so beautiful that the king desired her. In order to be able to seduce Sri Tanjung, the king ordered his patih on a mission that would take a long time to accomplish. During his absence, the king tried to court Sri Tanjung without success. When R. Sidopekso returned, he went first to his ruler. The king, angry that his scheme had not succeeded, told the patih that during his absence his wife had been unfaithful to him. Sidopekso went home and confronted his wife with her alleged adultery. Her denial did not convince him, and he announced that he was going to kill her. Sidopekso brought Sri Tanjung to the bank of the river. Before he stabbed her to death, she prophesied that her innocence would be proven. And indeed, after having stabbed his wife to death and having thrown the dead body into the dirty river, the river immediately became clean and began to spread a wonderful fragrance. Sidopekso said, “Banyu ... Wangi..... Banyuwangi”. This means "fragrant water ". BANYUWANGI was born from the proof of noble and sacred love.
