Trump Amplifies Calls to Jail Top Elected Officials, Invokes Military Tribunals

A post that Mr. Trump circulated on Sunday called for Liz Cheney to be prosecuted by a military court reserved for enemy combatants and war criminals.

Former President Donald J. Trump over the weekend escalated his vows to prosecute his political opponents , circulating posts on his social media website invoking “televised military tribunals” and calling for the jailing of President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Senators Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer and former Vice President Mike Pence, among other high-profile politicians.

Mr. Trump, using his account on Truth Social on Sunday, promoted two posts from other users of the site that called for the jailing of his perceived political enemies.

One post that he circulated on Sunday singled out Liz Cheney, the former Wyoming congresswoman who is a Republican critic of Mr. Trump’s, and called for her to be prosecuted by a type of military court reserved for enemy combatants and war criminals.

“Elizabeth Lynne Cheney is guilty of treason,” the post said. “Retruth if you want televised military tribunals.”

A separate post included photos of 15 former and current elected officials that said, in all-capital letters, “they should be going to jail on Monday not Steve Bannon! ” Those officials included Mr. Biden, Ms. Harris, Mr. Pence, Mr. Schumer and Mr. McConnell — the top leaders in the Senate — and Representative Nancy Pelosi, the former House speaker.

The list in the second post also had members of the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, including Ms. Cheney and the former Illinois congressman Adam Kinzinger, another Republican, and the Democratic Representatives Adam Schiff, Jamie Raskin, Pete Aguilar, Zoe Lofgren and Bennie Thompson, who chaired the committee.

In a statement, the Trump campaign did not address Mr. Trump’s posts, instead repeating allegations of misconduct by members of the committee, saying “Liz Cheney and the sham January 6th committee banned key witnesses, shielded important evidence, and destroyed documents” related to their investigation.

The posts, which were amplified by Mr. Trump’s Truth Social account on Sunday afternoon, were still listed on his profile on Monday afternoon.

The Biden campaign denounced the posts in a statement, saying that Mr. Trump “is doubling down on threats to our democracy,” adding that “the Supreme Court has now paved the way for him to do exactly what he is saying he will if he wins.”

Ms. Cheney responded with her own social media post on Sunday evening, saying “Donald — This is the type of thing that demonstrates yet again that you are not a stable adult — and are not fit for office.”

Mr. Trump has repeatedly called for the imprisonment of his political opponents, often singling out members of the Jan. 6 committee. But the two posts that Mr. Trump amplified on Sunday particularly stand out.

One proposed jailing an extensive list of high-ranking officials, including Mr. Trump’s former vice president, the top Republican in the Senate and the current president and vice president. The other invoked the dictatorial imagery of a televised military tribunal, which would strip Ms. Cheney of her right to due process similar to the military courts used to prosecute terror suspects at Guantánamo Bay

Giro d’Italia Women 2024: Who Are the Grand Tour’s Top 10 GC Contenders?

The Giro d’Italia Women will enter a new era next week. Not only is the race in the hands of men’s Giro organizers RCS for the first time, but with Annemiek van Vleuten retiring at the end of 2023, the Italian grand tour is set to see its first new winner in eight years after Van Vleuten and Anna van der Breggen dominated for almost a decade.

The only question is, who will it be?

With reigning Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift champion Demi Vollering skipping the Giro, there’s no nailed-on favorite for the overall, but instead a deep and talent-packed field of GC contenders, who look set to put on a fierce battle for the pink jersey.

After years of Dutch domination, with a few American victors thrown in along the way, the Italians are making a good case to win their home race for the first time since 2008 with Gaia Realini or Elisa Longo Borghini (both Lidl-Trek), whilst last year’s runner-up Juliette Labous (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) could become the second-ever French winner.

The non-Europeans are also represented with Kim Cadzow (EF-Oatly-Cannondale) and Ruth Edwards (Human Powered Health), whilst top teams, SD Worx-Protime and Canyon-SRAM, have almost too much choice when it comes to potential leaders.

With action getting underway on Sunday, here are 10 riders we expect to challenge for pink next week.

Gaia Realini (Lidl-Trek)

Gaia Realini is one of the younger riders at the Giro, but possibly the most serious GC contender, and it would be no surprise to see her take her first major stage race victory in Italy. The 23-year-old had a revelatory ride at the Giro in 2021, and it’s a race she always shines in, picking up third overall last year in her first year in the WorldTour.

A lightweight climber, Realini excels in the high mountains, but what really sets her apart is how good she is in the punchier stages too, not always expected for a rider of her size and climbing ability. After finishing on the podium of both the Vuelta and Giro last year, misfortune hampered her Vuelta this year, so the Giro is a chance for her to get back to the top of grand tour racing.

There’s probably no better climber on the start list than Realini, and with Blockhaus looming, her chances of victory are high. Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek)

It’s rare that a team has two full-fledged contenders for the win, but Lidl-Trek certainly do, with Realini joined by her compatriot Elisa Longo Borghini. The 32-year-old took her first podium here in 2020 and has slowly been cementing her status as a real GC contender since then, keeping up with the rising level of climbing in the women’s peloton.

She started the Giro as leader last year, and matched Van Vleuten over the first stages, but crashed out of contention on stage 5, opening the door for Realini’s podium but leaving us all asking what might have been. This year, the route looks perfect for Longo Borghini to be in the frame – if not the lead – up until stage 7, which will be the big challenge for her.

Her climbing is strong, but Blockhaus is a huge test and will make or break her race. If she can limit her losses, though, then the first pink jersey of her career could be calling. It all just depends on how Trek splits up leadership opportunities, but they will likely defer to Longo Borghini’s experience over the young Realini.

Juliette Labous (DSM-Firmenich PostNL)

In 2023, Juliette Labous was the rider who could get closest to the imperious Van Vleuten in her final Giro, with the DSM-Firmenich rider finishing second overall after a consistent week of racing. Though the Frenchwoman’s big dreams likely lie with the Tour de France, Labous has found more success at the Giro, winning a tough Queen stage back in 2022 and finishing in the top 10 twice before her runner-up spot last year.

A steady climber who likes the big mountains, Labous is perfectly suited to the challenges this route poses, and will certainly be contending for the top three. She’s also got a really strong team around her, helped by climbers like Ninke Vienke, and with no Charlotte Kool for the sprints all the focus will be on GC.

Labous is an athlete who is really maturing into a top rider, and the Giro offers a big chance for her to show off her level.

Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ-SUEZ)

Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig has had a quiet few weeks away from racing, but is expected to make her return at the Giro, where she will be aiming at stage wins and a high overall finish. As a punchier rider rather than a pure climber, Uttrup Ludwig’s stage racing record is fairly varied, but when she’s going well she is more than capable of mixing it in the top five riders.

The several punchy days should suit her well, and her experience will help her on the hardest stages. We’re expecting her to be joined by at least one of Grace Brown and Marta Cavalli, who will be strong additions to the team, and FDJ have proved their determination to really take it to squads like Lidl-Trek and SD Worx-Protime this year.

Always an exciting rider to watch, Uttrup Ludwig is definitely one to keep an eye on in Italy.

Marlen Reusser (SD Worx-Protime)

SD Worx-Protime come into this race in a slightly strange predicament, in that it’s not clear at all who they will – or indeed should – back for GC. Though their line-up isn’t yet confirmed, Marlen Reusser, Lotte Kopecky and Niamh Fisher-Black are all expected to be in it whilst Demi Vollering skips the Giro, as is usual for her.

Out of those three, any could make an argument for being the leader. Kopecky doesn’t seem like an obvious choice, but actually after her exploits in the Tour last year, we could see her trying to test herself in a week-long stage race once again, though perhaps the looming Olympics will temper that slightly.

Fisher-Black has been longing for dedicated leadership at this race for a while, but her chances might be hampered this year by the presence of Reusser, who seemingly wants to target the GC. The Swiss rider is a decent climber and a great time trialist, but previously her limit has been shorter stage races. Can she do it over eight days?

History would say the Blockhaus will be too hard for her, but the 32-year-old is always motivated and determined, so this will be an interesting test as she vies for leadership at a new team next year. Mavi García (Liv AlUla Jayco)

One of the four former podium finishers racing this Giro, Mavi García is shaping up to be a real threat. The Spaniard has always been talented but struggled for consistency before, but she really seems to be coming into a run of form this summer.

She was strong at Itzulia Women and then fairly dominant at the Vuelta a Andalucía, and whilst this is a different caliber of race, those results will have boosted her confidence. She also has a quietly impressive team around her: they’re not huge names, but the likes of Ingvild Gåskjenn, Ella Wyllie and of course Urška Žigart should bring really solid support.

Fem van Empel (Visma-Lease a Bike)

Despite having record stage winner Marianne Vos in their ranks, Visma-Lease a Bike are coming to this race with a slightly wildcard leader in Fem van Empel. The cyclo-cross star has been continuing to build up her road racing credentials this year, and will return to the Giro hoping for an improvement on 2023, where she finished 11th overall after a ride that proved her climbing and GC abilities.

Her run-in to this race has been somewhat disrupted after she was hit by a car in training, but she escaped with only minor injuries and is set to line up on Sunday. The podium will be an ask, but a top 10 finish should be her ambition.

Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon-SRAM)

Canyon-SRAM has at least three leaders to choose from, with Antonia Niedermaier, Neve Bradbury and Elise Chabbey all heading to the Giro. In truth, all three of them should be considered overall contenders, after Bradbury’s strong start to the year and Chabbey’s unwavering consistency.

However, their best chance may in fact be their young German Antonia Niedermaier, who won a stage here last year. The 21-year-old was the team’s best finisher at the Tour de Suisse, finishing sixth, and what she lacks in experience and maybe some race craft, she’ll more than make up for with her pure climbing ability.

If she can get to the final weekend without losing time, the Blockhaus climb should present a real opportunity for her, and possibly her best GC result yet. Kim Cadzow (EF-Oatly-Cannondale)

Kim Cadzow has only been racing in Europe since 2022, but in that time has made an instant impression, climbing superbly well at the Giro last year for Jumbo-Visma, and only looking better in 2024 as she’s been given more leadership opportunities with EF-Oatly-Cannondale.

The Kiwi won the lower-level Trofeo Ponente in Rosa stage race earlier this year, and most recently took eighth overall at the Tour de Suisse, so it’s clear that she has both the climbing form and the ability to put things together over several days of racing.

Cadzow is expected to skip the Tour de France, so this race is the real centerpiece of her summer in terms of stage racing, and she’s more than capable of taking a good result overall and even a stage win. The Blockhaus will be a big test, as she’s not raced too much in the highest mountains before, but expect to be her up there throughout the race. Ruth Edwards (Human Powered Health)

Finally, a rider who is making an exciting return to the Giro after her two-year racing hiatus: Ruth Edwards. Fresh off of winning the Lotto Thuringen Ladies Tour, Edwards seems to be in some fine form right now and is heading back to the Giro with a confidence boost.

She may not be a pure enough climber to be up there on the final stages, but the opening time trial and the lumpy midweek suit her well, and could well see her put herself in a solid overall position and then limit losses over the big climbs.

Edwards is a rider who knows how to win stages here, and knows how special it is to wear pink, so don’t rule her out of doing either of those things next week.

German City Temporarily Renamed After Taylor Swift Ahead Of Eras Tour Concert

Gelsenkirchen, a city in western Germany, is temporarily renaming itself "Swiftkirchen" in honour of Taylor Swift's upcoming Eras Tour shows. The city's mayor, Karin Welge, approved the proposal ahead of the popstar's performances from July 17-19. 

Taylor Swift is set to perform at three concerts in Gelsenkirchen, and thousands of her fans, known as 'Swifties,' are expected to attend. The city is preparing for the events by putting up signs with the new name, which translates to “Swift's Church.” 

The decision to temporarily change the city's name was taken after Aleshanee Westhoff from Emmerich, a fan of Taylor, started a petition and even wrote to Mayor Welge about this.

"It's a great idea to temporarily rename Gelsenkirchen to 'Swiftkirchen', which is why I'm particularly pleased that you can experience the short-term 'renaming' of Gelsenkirchen live and up close in Gelsenkirchen today," Mr Welge said in a letter to Westhoff, according to an official release.

Also, the first signage that marks the entrance to "Swiftkirchen" has also been installed by Westhoff on Ebertstrasse, the release stated.

Markus Schwardtmann, the head of the city's public relations department, said, "Today is the starting signal. We will be installing many more signs in highly frequented places in Gelsenkirchen in the coming days".

Besides, a "Taylor Swift tram" from Bogestra is already said to be on the road and will be making an attractive selfie motif, the release said, while highlighting the red frames that have been set up all over the city.

Taylor Swift will also receive her own stone on the Gelsenkirchen Walk of Fame, alongside local notables like soccer coach Rudi Assauer and writer Ilse Kibgis.

"There will be many small and large surprises so that the Swifties in Gelsenkirchen have a lot to discover," Mr Schwardtmann said.

Not just that, the German city will even be hosting a "big open-air Taylor Swift party,” which has been named “Taylor Town”. It will feature “lots of offers (swap market, karaoke, tattoos) related to the star."

"As mayor, I am of course very happy that Taylor Swift, currently the most successful singer in the world, will be performing three times in Gelsenkirchen. International attention will therefore be back on our city immediately after EURO 2024," Mayor Welge said in the official statement.

Taylor Swift is used to such adulation. At the beginning of the Eras Tour in March last year, Arizona's Glendale was temporarily renamed as “Swift City” in honour of the singer's tour stop in the city.

Aaron Rai and C.T. Pan share the John Deere Classic lead

SILVIS, Ill. — Aaron Rai of England went from a close call last week in Detroit to another chance at his first PGA Tour victory, playing another bogey-free round of 8-under 63 to share the lead with C.T. Pan going into the weekend at the John Deere Classic.

Still in the mix is Hayden Springer, who began the tournament with a 59. Springer had 12 birdies and two eagles in his first 29 holes before he began to sputter, missing a 3-foot par putt and taking a double bogey late in his round as light rain fell at the TPC Deere Run.

He had to settle for a 71 and and was among six players within two shots of the lead.

“It wasn’t too bad,” Springer said. “It was a little windier today, probably played a little tougher. I kind of hit some bumps on the back nine, but more just mental errors and not making those short putts than anything else.”

Three shots back was a player fresh out of college — Michael Thorbjornsen, the former Wellesley High star who played at Stanford and finished No. 1 in the PGA Tour University ranking to get a full PGA Tour card for the rest of this year and all of 2025.

Thorbjornsen started his round with four straight birdies and wound up with a 64 to sit at 11 under.

Pan holed a 100-foot chip for eagle on the reachable par-4 14th and also kept bogeys off his card for a 63. Pan and Rai were at 14-under 128.

Rai shared the 54-hole lead in the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week and wound up one shot behind Cam Davis.

“Been playing well tee-to-green for large parts of this season. That’s kind of continued over the last few weeks,” Rai said. “And then a couple of weeks ago I spent quite a while on the green. My dad gave me a couple tips. Started working with John Graham last week, as well, a putting coach who is based out here.

“Putting all that together has definitely translated to on the course.”

Rai wasn’t the only player using some momentum from last week. Florida State sophomore Luke Clanton extended his amazing summer run with a 67 that left him at 12-under 130.

He drove the green on the 348-yard 14th hole to 15 feet for eagle. Perhaps more impressive was the way he rebounded from a double bogey on the par-4 sixth toward the end of his round with two straight birdies.

“We hadn’t really made a mistake all week, and made one tiny mistake and made double,” Clanton said. “I knew it was all right. Going to make birdie-birdie no matter that. I knew after I got that double, I said to myself, ‘We ain’t finishing at 10 under. We’re going to finish at 12.’”

He hit his tee shot on the 202-yard seventh hole to just inside 10 feet for birdie, and then made another 10-foot birdie putt on the par-4 eighth to make good on his belief.

Harry Hall (66) was at 13 under, while joining Springer and Clanton at 12 under were Eric Cole (68), Davis Thompson (67) and Denny McCarthy (66).

Two-time Deere winner Jordan Spieth at least made it to the weekend. Playing the tournament for the first time since he won it nine years ago, Spieth hit a pair of wild shots that led to bogey and put him outside the cut line until he rallied with a pair of birdies.

He missed a 4-foot birdie chance on his final hole and had to settle for a 67, making the cut with a shot to spare. But he was still eight shots behind and not particularly optimistic, mainly because of a 69 on Thursday morning in the easiest conditions.

“We had yesterday morning with no wind and a chance — ball in hand — to really take advantage,” Spieth said. “I had 18 holes of a couple under yesterday, and unless you’re absolutely perfect from there, there is not much of a chance of winning. That doesn’t mean you don’t go out and try and shoot 10 under the next day.”
