The Bay City Rollers which also included brothers Alan and Derek Longmuir, Eric Faulkner, and singer Les McKeown (who we interviewed in our 2019 December issue shortly before his untimely death).

Selling over 300 million albums worldwide, the Bay City Rollers attracted fans of all ages and a phenomenon known as Rollermania swept across the globe.

As their manager John McLaughlin takes the new line-up on the road this year, we caught up with Woody who vividly remembers those crazy days.

I asked him did he ever envisage the Rollers would become so successful?

“No. I didn’t get into this business to be successful, you kinda get into this because you like to play music. I love the whole idea of getting up and being on stage and traveling from city to city although back then it was district to district or even town hall to town hall. It got crazy and we got very lucky and I got very lucky. Back then it wasn’t planned but I guess we were in the right place at the right time I suppose” said Woody.

Still living near Edinburgh to this day, does the guitarist have any downtime away from the spotlight?

“I have a dog and a wife and we go for walks and just chill really. It’s really nice to be able to do what we want to do but I still gig occasionally.”

“In fact, I’ve just come back from a gig recently with 4,000 people and there are a couple of big shows and things on the cards in the future. It’s all looking very, very nice and we’ve got John McLaughlin managing us”.

The Roller fans have been very loyal down the years, haven’t they?

“They’re unbelievable and just brilliant people and the fact they’ve stood by our band all these years”.

“Now when I’m playing, it’s back to the good times. Full of people singing their hearts out to every song and waving those tartan scarves”, says Woody finally.

“It’s just such a pleasure to be doing these happy songs again and getting back to what The Rollers were meant to be about — the way l always wanted the band to be.”

Les McKeown is the voice on all the hit's and he created the band "Bay City Rollers starring Les McKeown" I've seen them so many times, over the past few years, and I've got tickets, for another four shows this year. The atmosphere is absolutely fantastic, it really takes you back to the 70's! Les has a truly amazing voice, and a fantastic band. He interacts with the audience, and gives up his time, after the shows, for photographs. If you get the chance, to go and see them, you should go. I promise you won't be disappointed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

I have been to a few of Les McKeown's gigs and all of them are amazing. It's one big party from start till the end and even afterwards he takes the time to meet fans. The man is a born artist with a lot of love for what he does and for his fans. It's not so easy for me to do gigs living in the Netherlands is a lot of traveling but if I could I would do every one of his gigs. So see for yourself and I'm pretty sure I see you next time there too, get rollerised.

Les and his band put on a fabulous show with plenty of interaction with the crowd. I would recommend anyone to go and see at least one of the shows on this tour.

We are Les McKeown’s band. The Legendaries.

About the band

Rollermania with The Legendaries are all members of the late Les McKeown’s final touring band: Scott McGowan, Phil Hendriks, Darren Lee and Nick Gornall. The latest addition is Dave Major on keyboards, who had previously deputised for the band on several occasions.

Scott McGowan had been part of Les’s band for over 12 years, first as guitarist, then as keyboardist and now he returns to guitar and vocals. Phil Hendriks joined “Les McKeown’s Legendary 1970s Bay City Rollers” as guitarist in 2011, direct from a 3-year stint in original Rollers guitarist Eric Faulkner’s version of the band.

During Scott and Phil’s tenure with the band, they performed numerous overseas tours in countries including Australia, Japan, Canada, as well as annual UK tours, festivals and numerous TV appearances. They were also part of the backing band at the celebrated Rollers “reunion” shows in 2015 and 2016, which featured original members Alan Longmuir and ‘Woody’ and included a televised show at the “T In The Park” festival and the “Hogmanay Live” TV show. Scott and Phil now share the lead vocals in ‘The Legendaries’.

Darren Lee had frequently stepped in on drums before becoming a full-time member in 2019, as did bassist Nick Gornall, both firmly establishing themselves with two tours of Japan, a UK arena tour, UK theatre tours and the fateful Canadian tour in 2020, which was curtailed half-way through due to the Covid pandemic and would sadly be Les McKeown’s final tour.

We played with Les McKeown, the voice of the Bay City Rollers, for over ten years, performing sold-out shows worldwide which featured all the big hits and more.

We continue to perform now, and we deliver a high-energy show that keeps the essence, the spirit and the musical legacy of Les very much alive.

We are not a tribute band – we are Les Mckeown’s band.

Journey back in time to those carefree days of the 70’s when Scotland’s original boy band ruled the charts. Selling over 300 million albums worldwide, the Bay City Rollers attracted fans of all ages and a phenomenon known as Rollermania swept across the globe.

Tartan clad fans in the UK and other parts of Europe were soon joined by throngs of devoted fans in Australia, Canada, USA and Japan.

Now, Bay City Roller legend, Stuart “Woody” Wood, has brought together a powerful group of talented musicians who embody the same essence of the original band that the world knew and loved. Backed by incredible musical resumes, this group has taken what it means to be a Bay City Roller to heart and their excitement is infectious.

​The current Bay City Rollers are Ian Thomson on lead vocals and guitar, John McLaughlin on vocals and keys, Mikey Smith on bass guitar, Jamie McGrory on drums and Woody on guitar.

The BCR song ‘Don’t Let The Music Die’ has echoed through time and the call is being answered. With Woody leading the charge, The Bay City Rollers bring their fresh energy and enthusiasm to the stage to breathe new life into the classic hits for fans around the world once again.

No longer ‘Yesterday’s Heroes’, The Bay City Rollers are back, they are touring and turning the whole world tartan!

Northern Soul band ‘Kenny Lee Roberts’ will be opening for the Bay City Rollers on their Scottish ‘Rollin’ into Christmas’ tour dates to get the party started for the fans. Singer-Songwriter Kenny and his incredible band have gained a reputation for bringing power and energy to the stage and their big bombastic Soul sound is not to be missed.
