Delta Spirit are an indie rock band hailing from all over California, USA. The band are formed around the core duo of Jon Jameson and Brandon Walker, and have released four studio albums since their debut E.P, released in 2005.

The band begun when Jameson and Young (on bass and drums, respectively) decided to form a band with a new friend of theirs called Sean Walker, who played guitar. The new trio set about finding a singer to start recording with, and Young found Matt Vasquez busking on a bench at two in the morning.

The two exchanged contact details and one of the hottest bands in American indie rock was born. They recorded their debut E.P, “I Think I’ve Found It”, in the home studio of Kelly Winrich, who went on to join the band as well shortly after recording wrapped. The E.P was released in 2006 but it wasn’t until the year after when they released their debut album that things started really happening.

“Ode To Sunshine” was recorded and released independently in 2007, however it got the attention of Rounder Records the year after, and they re-released it to great acclaim. By late 2008 and early 2009 they had made their television debut, first on Late Night With Conan O’Brien then on Last Call With Carson Daly soon after.

Did I mention that they toured? Because my god did they tour. An astonishing 293 live shows in 2009 alone in fact, which they paid for by Walker leaving the band in the fall of that year. It’s just as well that the album that was written during that time and released the next year, “History From Below”, got them slots opening for My Morning Jacket and on the bill at Coachella.

By the time that 2012 rolled around the band had relocated to Brooklyn from San Diego, and their self-titled third album came out soon after. This is a band that is constantly one-upping themselves and pushing themselves to make the best record they can make. They’re known as one of the best live bands around and with this much experience, it’s not a surprise. 2014 saw the release of their album “Into The Wide”, and for Delta Spirit, they’re only going to get better from here on out.

SO here it is, my two cents on the magic that is Delta Spirit, and the reasons why their show on June 3rd pretty much changed the game.

So the stage was dimly lit with a plethora of tiki torches which gave it a very intimate and inviting feel. As Ellen and I paraded up the stairs and into the Constellation room we heard that familiar introduction to Strange Vine, which is my personal favorite jam on Ode to Sunshine. SO yeah, awesome way to kick off what will end up being one of the best shows I've ever seen. So as you know, the lineup said "Delta Spirit and Friends"... they brought some friends alright. Matt Costa came out, Sameer Gadhia, lead singer of Young the Giant, came out and quite a few others that I didn't note the names of; they were more so personal friends of the band, but they were awesome nonetheless.

Vasquez was seriously on fire last night. There was a lot of dialogue in between songs that made the room fill with laughter; I had no idea the dude was so damn funny. Every girl was pretty much drooling over him. He was jumping off walls- his energy was indescribable. He'd go from cracking jokes and laughing at himself to putting his serious face on, and then the tiki torches would go from vibrant to almost unlit, and he would then sit down with his guitar, hang his hat, and sing to the crowd with SO much passion, it 'd make a grown man cry. Another very cool thing about this show- I expected mostly Into the Wide songs.. but they sang EVERYTHING. They even covered that famous and likable Violent Femmes song Add it Up... "How can I get... just one kiss..." yea, you know it.

One of my favorite parts was the second to last song when the band and all the special guests came back out to the stage and sang Rod Stewart's I wish That I Knew What I Know Now. You've never seen a bunch of dudes have so much fun on stage. Vasquez was all over the place in the crowd on that one, you had no idea where he was or where his voice was coming from, but everyone else made the stage impossible to look away from. And of course.. as if I wasn't stoked enough on what I had just experienced... They ended the night with People, Turn Around.. my other favorite jam on Ode to Sunshine. It was one of the most incredible live shows I have ever experienced, and I've been to a lot of shows, man. If people weren't already in love with Delta Spirit before that show, well they fucking are now.

The words ‘Delta’ and ‘Spirit’ both seem to be popular words to include in the name of your bands, especially on the evidence of the last decade or so, so it’s important not to confuse Delta Spirit with the likes of The Duke Spirit or any band related to the delta blues sound; in fairness to the San Diego outfit, that shouldn’t be too difficult, because they’ve managed to carve out a sound that both achieves widespread commercial appeal and is pretty singular, too, pretty difficult to mistake for anybody else; they intelligently blend elements of Americana and soul with an otherwise straightforward indie rock palette, to often stirring effect. Live, too, they’re an intense proposition, with high-profile festival slots in the U.S. at the likes of Coachella and Lollapalooza testament to the unifying nature of their anthemic sound, which can flit between balladry and aggressive rock and roll at a moments notice; it’s that dichotomy, too, which has afforded them a following here in the UK, and they’ve made their over here several times accordingly. Their most recent trip, back in 2010, saw them pack out intimate rooms with support from Dillinja; with a new album, Into the Wide, lined up for September, expect further dates sooner than later.

Californian indie rock outfit Delta Spirit formed in 2005 and as they approach their ten year anniversary the group appears to be stronger than ever. As they step out onto the stage to the sound of deafening cheers, there is a great little interaction between the friends which is a mixture of bemusement, amazement and gratitude. It is pretty clear to everybody present that these boys feel incredibly privileged to be able to travel the world as a group sharing their music with a great fanbase.

To thank the crowds for their ongoing support, the group treats them to one of the most energetic Delta Spirit shows to date. There is not one single moment when every member is not fully invested in the music and the performance. They rip into the guitars, batter the drums and practically scream back the lyrics during 'Tear It Up' and 'Empty House' in order to enthuse the masses. It works well and by the end of this exhausting set, the whole crowd has their hands raised high as they cheer on the dizzying instrumentals of 'White Table' before it all crashes to the ground in an instant.

Amazing! Great energy. Great artists that they had playing with them. Just an amazing show that I didn't want to end. It's no surprise that tonight's show is sold out. Definitely want to see these guys again and again.

Delta Spirit have announced their return with One Is One , due out May 20th via New West Records. The Americana rockers have also shared the moving new single “What’s Done Is Done,” which is accompanied by the first music video to star actors with Down Syndrome.

The 10-track One Is One was produced by the band with Jason Kingsland (Band of Horses, Belle and Sebastian) and mixed by Matt Pence (Jason Isbell, The Breeders). Work on the album began in the summer of 2020, when frontman Matthew Logan Vasquez and drummer Brandon Young recorded an initial version of the LP and sent it to the rest of the band. While convening for sessions in New York and Vermont, Delta Spirit expanded the album’s sonic palette.

“ One Is One essentially says, ‘What is life all about? Here are some observations,'” Vasquez explained in a statement. “This music was adventurous for us. It’s full of positivity and beauty. I hope those feelings are reflected back for people.”

Pre-orders for One Is One are ongoing . Vinyl and CD editions of the album will be released on September 16th. Check out the artwork and tracklist after the jump.

Chugging forward with propulsive drums and rollicking guitar, “What’s Done Is Done” is an observation of a relationship that’s hit a rough spot. “Could you be so selfish/ Could you be so cold,” sings Vasquez. “I may never know/ The answer to the question/ The truth you never told.”

The single is brought to life in the powerful music video, released in honor of World Down Syndrome Day. Written and directed by the band’s longtime collaborator Michael Parks Randa, the clip was produced in partnership with the Global Down Syndrome Foundation (GLOBAL).

The “What’s Done Is Done” video stars Zack Gottsagen ( The Peanut Butter Falcon ) and Jamie Brewer ( American Horror Story ), depicting the ups and downs of their love story. Watch it below.

“I want people to see what’s inside our hearts,” Gottsagen said in a statement. “We are warm. We are kind. We are sweet. That is who we are. People with Down syndrome want to be in love and spread that love and joy, like me and Jamie in the music video.”

Brewer added, “I believe that everyone should be included in everyday activities and be represented in all aspects of the media. Our world is made up of all types of individuals with different backgrounds and lifestyles, and music is a common thread with everyone. We can all learn from each other and be inspired when we see something new, exciting, and possible around us. Let’s all keep music in our heart.”

This kind of representation is particularly important for Vasquez, who worked in an adult transition program for people with disabilities before starting Delta Spirit. “As a society, we really underestimate the capabilities of the disability community, especially in the creative arts,” he said. “Having a niece with Down syndrome, it’s really important for her to see herself on screen and feel included and to know that an amazing organization like the Global Down Syndrome Foundation is working hard to create a brighter future for her.”

Indie rockers Delta Spirit have announced a sizable North American tour in early 2022 promoting their latest album 'What Is There' . The 28-city journey kicks off March 22nd in Birmingham and continues into May making notable stops in Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Jersey City, Dallas, Boulder and Boise. Also during the year, the band will be making an appearance at High Water Festival along with Jack White , My Morning Jacket , Modest Mouse , Black Pumas and Shovels & Rope among others.

Delta Spirit released their fifth studio album 'What Is There' on September 11th, 2020 via New West Records. Also in 2020, they launched their Not Dead Yet Tour which was their first official outing in over four years. The following year, the band teamed up with Deer Tick for their FriendSHIP Tour which visited 16 cities across America. Current members include Jon Jameson, Brandon Young, Matt Vasquez, Kelly Winrich and Will McLaren.

REVIEW: Delta Spirit “One Is One”

Delta Spirit – One Is One (New West Records) For One Is One , their latest LP, San Diego’s Delta Spirit does little to deviate from the template they’ve created over their past few records, blending a more modern-sounding Indie Rock with snatches of folk and Americana. It was forged after their first couple of records and the band seems to have settled into their sound. And that is certainly not a bad thing.

The album begins with the atmospheric “Villains,” backed by an electronic dance beat but it’s on the title track, just two songs in, where the band starts to show their strength folding in seemingly disparate influences like Depeche Mode and Trent Reznor into a powerful indie rock sound. By “What’s Done Is Done,” they have hit on an anthemic tune to rival The Killers. Lest you think this is all boisterous stadium singalongs, “Lottery Ticket” is a quieter introspective piano backed track as is “Jane Pauley,” an impressively focused song with cello (and while the venerable broadcaster is not the sole focus of the song, she is finally mentioned toward the end, just in case you were curious). But the clear standout song on the record is the sonically beautiful “Thoughts On Seneca” with immaculate harmonies over a plucked acoustic guitar and strings; It may be the band’s finest moment yet in their decade-plus career.

Lyrically, the songs here are not overly complicated, but they still manage to deal with life’s big issues. “Our cup of tea is making epic and cinematic music,” said frontman Matthew Vasquez. “This music was adventurous for us. It’s full of positivity and beauty. I hope those feelings are reflected back for people.” The cinematic feel is obvious in the sweeping, build up in the closing track, “On & On (Look Away),” a powerful cap to a solidly impressive record.

PHOTOS: Deer Tick, Delta Spirit Wrap Night One At Webster Hall

Deer Tick  and  Delta Spirit  continued their 2021  FriendSHIP  tour on Monday, kicking off the first of two shows at New York, NY’s Webster Hall .

The bands, which have co-headlined the  FriendSHIP  tour since late October, recently came off shows at Philadelphia, PA’s  Union Transfer  (11/20), and Washington, D.C.’s 9:30 Club (11/19). Deer Tick, the indie/alt-rock quartet comprised of John McCauley , Christopher Ryan ,  Dennis Ryan , and  Ian O’Neil , found itself relatively close to home for the show, less than 200 miles from its base in Providence, RI. Delta Spirit, on the other hand, found itself thousands of miles away from its nest and the tour-opening city of San Diego, CA. The five-piece outfit traversed the country with its Deer Tick compadres over the last three weeks, spreading its indie-rock offerings across the East and West Coasts, the Midwest, and everything in between.

Tonight, November 23rd, both bands will return to Webster Hall for the final stop on the  FriendSHIP  tour. Looking forward, Delta Spirit will return west with no more dates on the band’s 2021 calendar, while Deer Tick will head home to Providence for a show at Columbus Theatre  on Wednesday night (11/24) with  The Huntress and The Holder of Hands . However, in the case of Delta Spirit, it took a little less than fifteen. The whole story could’ve been written in the stars…

Astrology tells us a “Saturn​ Return” happens when the planet Saturn revolves back to the same position it held upon our birth. It typically takes almost thirty years. However, in the case of Delta Spirit, it took a little less than fifteen. The enduring California rock quintet — Matthew Logan Vasquez [vocals], Kelly Winrich [multi-instrumentalist, vocals], Will McLaren [guitar], Jon Jameson [bass], and Brandon Young [drums] — realign on their fifth full-length and first album since 2014, What​ Is There [New West Records]. As much as it reflects their journey thus far, it also ushers them into new territory as both musicians and, most importantly, friends.

“In 2015, we were getting along like family gets along,” admits Matthew. “That means sometimes we didn’t like each other too much. We were just growing apart. When we took a break and the band stopped, the friendships got an opportunity to come back. That was the process. Every time we hung out, we’d be like, ‘It’d​ be cool if we could do it again’​. Over time, you can lose it and even forget it. When we played together, we found the same joy and took it deeper. We all had a ‘Saturn​ Return’ moment with each other. The record is deep sonically and emotionally. The band is still pursuing its endeavor in a meaningful way.”

Delta Spirit started pursuing that endeavor in 2005. The five-piece amassed a catalog beloved by fans, including the I​ Think I’ve Found It ​EP [2006] and full-length albums Ode To Sunshine ​[2008], History​ From Below ​[2010], Delta​ Spirit ​[2012], and Into​ The Wide [2014]. Praising Into​ The Wide​, Consequence​ of Sound predicted, “Wherever those instincts take them next, they should trust it.” Along the way, the group headlined countless shows, toured with everyone from Cold War Kids to My Morning Jacket, and performed at Coachella​ ​, Lollapalooza​ ​, and beyond. Launching a quiet infiltration of the mainstream, they contributed music to many notable TV shows, including their song “Devil Knows You’re Dead” being featured in the final montage of the acclaimed series Friday Night Lights​. Along the way, they also became regulars on late night, performing on Letterman,​ Kimmel, ​and Jools Holland​, to name a few, and taping an ACL Live ​episode.

Taking a break, their paths diverged only to continue crisscrossing. Matthew released and toured behind three solo albums, while Kelly launched a career as a producer. Jon hit the road with the LA band, Muna, Brandon accompanied long-friend, Sam Outlaw, in Europe, and Will toured and recorded with Mikky Ekko. After numerous conversations, the musicians convened again at Cave East in Brooklyn for a jam session in 2018. The momentum ramped up as they recorded at Cave West in San Clemente and in Austin, TX before eventually retreating to Sonic Ranch outside of El Paso. The album naturally materialized with the help of engineer Jason Kingsland, who also worked with the band on Into the Wide​.

“Along the way, we made sure to keep those precious moments and maintain a sense of discovery and joy.” He goes on, “There are vocals from demo jams, crashes in mic tracks, and all of these imperfect sounds that would only happen once. When we got to Sonic Ranch, it all came together. We’ve always recorded at destinations, but this one was the best.”

Moreover, they wrote and recorded from a new place informed by maturity gained by their journey, break, and reunion. They locked into the process together and eventually found the sweet spot where they were all on the same page.

Delta Spirit introduce this chapter with the first single “How Bout It.” A slow burn of drums and piano simmer as Matthew’s voice stretches into a fiery falsetto on the question, “How​ bout it?” The track builds towards an airy bridge before a bluesy guitar lead twists and turns through the beat. “It’s the trials of a gambler who can’t walk away from the table,” he explains. “I feel that in my own life. In some way, shape, or form, all of us struggle with when to walk away.”

Originally written in an Oslo emergency room on his iPad during a ten-hour wait, album opener “The Pressure” hinges on a sunny guitar lick and buoyant groove before the hypnotic chant, “The pressure got its hooks in you​​.”​

“Living in Oslo was great, but I’d been running myself ragged in 2018, and I had a bit of a breakdown there,” he admits. “The song talks about that. Always trying to take control and manage my own destiny led to breaking down. It’s about being visibly distressed, coming around to find peace, and stepping through it.”

Acoustic guitar and shimmering keys glow on “It Ain’t Easy” as the verses shuffle towards another hummable hook and a sinewy solo.

“Personality-wise, our band is five contrarians trying to agree on an idea,” he continues. “When your similarity is that you’re contrarian, it’s tough. But, when things work out, it’s incredible. So, the song is really about realizing you need friends.”

In addition to writing “Lover’s Heart,” Kelly took over the mic for the first time on a

Delta Spirit album with the heartbreaking ballads “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” and “Just the Same.” Meanwhile, the finale and title track “What Is There” hinges on soft acoustic strumming and a poetic homage to the group itself.

“The song is an acrostic, so the first letter of every line in each verse spells out Brandon, Kelly, Will, and Jon,” he reveals. “It’s a love letter to those guys and what we’ve done together as a collective. The song looks back and looks forward. We’re always chasing the brass ring in terms of our hopes and dreams as a band family. We’ve done a lot of incredible things, but it’s a reminder the journey we’re on together is the most beautiful part. We always try to take things as far as we can and live in gratitude amongst that. What more can this band do? Let’s find out.”

In the end, Delta Spirit not only return, but move forward together on What Is There​.

“When I think about Delta Spirit, we initially met each other in such an odd and serendipitous time,” Matthew leaves off. “I’m really proud of our body of work, but especially proud of where everybody has gotten to now. I have a lot of hope for us. I’m grateful for everyone in this band. There’s a lot of raw honesty in the music. Hopefully, people can have something to hold on to, so they know somebody is empathizing with their feelings. It’s a record for right now, instead of pandering to the past. It’s the next step.”
