8 Best Cruise Lines for Young Adults

  • Honeymooners
  • Young Adults

Group of young adults celebrating in a pool.

For decades, the ocean cruise industry catered toward either retired travelers or young families. Those days, however, are long gone. Nowadays, going a cruise is incredibly popular among the younger crowd as well. It’s not unusual at all to go on cruises as a 20-something year old. In fact, many cruise lines now have plenty of amenities and facilities that focus on young people. In this post, we focus on the millennial audience, and have made an overview of the best cruise lines for young adults.

Important : Keep in mind that most cruise lines have minimum age requirements. Similar to renting a car, most cruise lines require that you be at least 21 years old. Make sure to ask your travel agent (call us at 800-498-7245 with questions) about any restrictions. If you decide to book with us (arguably the best option and cheapest price), our agents will work with you to identify the best cruise line for you.

Our Picks for the Best Cruise Lines for Young Adults

Millennials tend to spend their money on experiences instead of on material things. The following best cruise lines for young adults know this and have catered their ships and activities to this. On their ships, you’ll find nightclubs and concert venues, along with things to do like bar crawls, hiking excursions and onboard zip lining.

1. Carnival Cruise Line

Let’s start with arguably the best cruise line for young adults in the world, Carnival Cruise Line . Its name alone tells you everything you need to know, really. Carnival’s “fun ships” are all about entertainment, nightlife and places to relax during the day.

Celebrity Cruises has a reputation of being an upscale cruise line that attracts an older crowd. While some elements of this may be true, in my opinion, Celebrity has some of the best teen centres at sea.

Celebrity is great for teenagers to make new friends, while parents get a luxurious and relaxing vacation

The Teen Club on Celebrity is pretty cool. Teenagers have their own hangout spaces. Some of the activities on Celebrity include pool parties, movie nights, sports tournaments and video games.

On Celebrity cruise ships, you’ll find really cool pool areas, hot tubs, a video arcade, a miniature golf course and a basketball court.

The food on Celebrity is amazing and the service can’t be beat. They have plenty of food options in the main dining room that will be appealing to teenagers, even if they are picky eaters.

Are Cruises Safe for Teenagers?

Cruises are very safe for teenagers. Cruises give teens their freedom to explore and have fun, while still being confined to a cruise ship. The teen club is a great place to hang out safely, and meet up with friends.

As with any vacation, talk with your teen about the rules and general safety precautions before your cruise. As long as the teenager is responsible, there is no reason to be worried about their safety on a cruise ship.

The allure of cruises lies in the abundance of activities, entertainment, and the opportunity to explore new destinations, making it a convenient and enjoyable way to experience the world.

The all-inclusive nature of cruises is one of the primary reasons people opt for this type of vacation. With accommodations, meals, and entertainment bundled into a single package, travelers can indulge in a hassle-free getaway that often provides excellent value for their money. Why stay in a hostel when you can cruise for the same $?

Tailored cruises for 21-year-olds and other young adults strike the perfect balance between relaxation, excitement, and cultural immersion. That’s why all of our ships give young adults the freedom to explore on their own with unique onboard entertainment. The Beach House invites teens ages 12-17 to meet their peers in this surf-themed hangout. With movies, video game competitions and dance classes, they can stay entertained while making lifelong friends. In addition to the Beach House, all of our ships include programs exclusively for teens , like our Rock the Boat Party. With a red carpet-lined entrance, hand-crafted mocktails and chart-topping music, this night-long celebration is what makes our ships one of the best party cruises for a younger crowd.

Best Cruises for Young Adults in Their Teens

Even more important than the ship is the destination. The best cruises for young adults involve locations with action-packed adventures like the Eastern Caribbean , Mexico and Hawaii. Snorkel past shipwrecks in the Cayman Islands. Embark on an off-road adventure through Cabo’s Wild Canyon by way of UTV. Or, zipline 1,000 feet above the ground over lush canopies in Kauai. With Princess®, there’s no shortage of excitement for teens and young adults alike.

Best Cruises for Young Adults Traveling with Friends

We know teens won’t always travel with their families, which is why we created our three-to-five day Getaways . As an affordable option for those looking to travel with friends, they’re one of the best cruises for young adults. Our itineraries include voyages on the West Coast and the Caribbean , so guests can visit iconic stateside cities or enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of the tropics. For adults 21 and older, experience Wine Country without the extra fees of hotels and transportation. Taste perfectly ripe champagne, or dine al fresco with a picnic in the vineyards. In the Caribbean, embark on a thrilling speed boat ride to Passion Island, where complimentary food and beverages await. On any of our Getaway cruises, young adults can take the vacation that they want without sacrificing money that they need.

When planning your next vacation, remember that the best cruises for young adults are those that offer engaging activities both on land and on board. Experience the best of both worlds when you sail with Princess.

Cruise Trail

The best cruise for young adults

You are not too young to cruise and here is why

Old stereotypes die hard. And that is very true for the cruising industry. Once upon a time, a cruise vacation was only for the over 55s. Activities onboard were mediocre, and the best entertainment was a quiz night.

In recent years all that has changed. Drastically. And we’re here to tell you why you are never too young to cruise. And to give you tips about the best cruise for young adults.

Quick navigation

What makes a great cruise experience for younger cruise guests?

Many cruise lines have invested an extraordinary amount in newer, bigger, and more exciting ships at sea. They have deliberately turned their marketing efforts into attracting younger adults, starting with the 20 and 30 somethings.

And that’s not all. We are so relieved that they have realized 55 is the new 40.

Many 55+ travelers take an instant dislike to anything targeted to over 55s. And that’s because most cruise guests over 55 are no different from those in their 40s. And that is active, adventurous, and looking for a fun cruise experience.

Some are couples, others travel with families on multi-generation cruise trips , and many others choose to cruise solo .

Most families choosing a cruise line expect a great all-around experience for every family member. Think adrenaline-pumping activities, fantastic bars and nightlife, an excellent kids club, and fabulous destinations. You are looking for luxury, relaxation, and great food and drink. And you’re looking to make new friends.

A perfect cruise vacation for young couples, families, and solo travelers

So let’s look at how a cruise vacation is now for everyone. And that includes young adults, the older guests, and everyone else in between. It’s about finding the right cruise for you and your family or just for you as a solo traveler .

Cruising is an ideal holiday for 20 to 30-year-olds. So let’s dispel the myth that it’s for “oldies only.” A luxury cruise ship with fun and active entertainment, activities, and shore excursions, is available at a more reasonable price than you may first imagine.

Outstanding activities and one-of-a-kind experiences

Royal Caribbean is one of the best cruise lines leading the way for daring and exciting activities onboard. They offer outstanding kids’ clubs so Moms and Dads can relax. Their latest cruise ship, Wonder of the Seas, offers surf simulators, dry slides, ice skating, zip lining, and much more. This Oasis-class ship also has fantastic entertainment, ensuring the best cruise for young adults that you could want.

Shows onboard are bigger and better than ever before. Some are Broadway quality. Expect great entertainment every evening in the theater. From stand-up comedians to illusionists, singing stars, and entire broadway productions, you turn up and enjoy a night out. All a short walk away from your cabin.

Water parks, fountains, and giant slides will guarantee to bring out the kid in you, whatever age you are.

Bars of all kinds can be found onboard. The latest technology and brilliant barristers (sometimes robotic) ensure a fantastic atmosphere with musical entertainment to suit all tastes.

It’s time to think beyond the traditional ballroom-style dancing of many earlier cruise ships. While that still exists on certain cruise lines such as Cunard , you will find everything from clubs to karaoke with stunning light shows and laser effects. They rival the most modern dance clubs around.

So how does your cruise line retain loyal (older) cruise guests while attracting the younger generation?

The answer is variety. Most cruise lines offer hundreds of cruise routes and destinations to choose from. Ships of all sizes incorporating different facilities onboard mean that there is most certainly a cruise to suit you.

The best cruise lines offer a great choice of larger cruise ships. And this means that the design can incorporate many different areas or neighborhoods onboard. This spreads out the guests. If one in 5000 onboard, you can still move about freely without being overcrowded.

Brilliantly conceived and executed activities, events, dining, and entertainment all fall under the watchful eye of a cruise director. There is, quite simply, so much to choose from you will find that guests do not know all flock to the same thing at the same time. Apart from the dining, perhaps.

The style, variety, and sheer volume of dining possibilities make it impossible not to find the perfect meal that suits you. Cruise lines must and do cater to all tastes. You can inform them of your specific dietary requirements before your cruise, and choices on board should be plenty. And if it’s not, a quiet word to your Maître d’ will soon sort that out.

Kids clubs for young families – from tots to teens

Kid’s clubs and teen clubs are better than ever. They are so good that perhaps your little one will prefer to spend time with new little friends rather than with you while onboard. It has been known.

Outside of club opening times, there is also the option of babysitting. Gone are the days when you may have once contemplated a cruise but felt you couldn’t enjoy the facilities because you’d been running around after your toddler all day. Help is most certainly at hand in the form of professional care and endless kiddie activities.

Family prices for an all-inclusive vacation and cabins to suit all budgets

A cruise vacation does not have to break the bank. Far from it. More and more young adults are discovering just what value for money a cruise can be. From the beginning, you can choose what you want to include over and above your cabin and dining. And pay upfront. It’s an excellent way to avoid hidden costs along the way.

Take, for example, a family of four, two adults and two children, who book a 4-berth inside cabin. All your meals are included. And if you do not want a drinks package, water, juice, tea, and coffee is available in the buffet restaurant at no extra charge.

An inside cabin is the lowest price point, meaning cash over can be spent on pre-booked excursions. And now compare this with a 5-star hotel resort where you pay extra for all your meals, drinks, and activities. Then think how much more you get for your hard earned money on board a cruise ship. Remember, kid’s clubs, most entertainment, and many activities are included in the basic cost of your cruise. And there are always deals to be had.

So for the budget-conscious family, and let’s face it, all of us want value for our money, cruise holidays are certainly worth your consideration. Cruise fares vary between cruise lines, but all want to be competitive and win your business. And even once you are booked, you should monitor the price of your cruise. Any price drop and you can ask for the difference to be refunded.

Remember to check the price of your cruise – even after you have booked

If the cost of the exact cruise and cabin category you have chosen is reduced between the time you pay your deposit and the time your final payment is due, ask the cruise line to refund you the difference.

This is not done automatically. You must contact the cruise line yourself and request this. Alternatively, if you have booked through a travel agent, ask them for help. You could save hundreds if not thousands making the best cruises even better.

You unpack your suitcase only once—more time for fun.

If you are looking for a multi-experience vacation but prefer not to island hop, dislike train travel, or do not want the expense of car rental or flights between different locations, then a cruise is for you. Packing is made easy, and you only unpack your cruise essentials once. Your cabin becomes your second home.

The journey from port to port is seamless, and between all the activities and entertainment onboard, you will be at a new destination before you know it. Seriously. What is not to love?

Nightlife and fun, new friends, and extraordinary cultural experiences

A cruise also fits the bill for the young crowd looking for a bachelor or bachelorette party venue or best friends looking for luxury and fun in the same place. Most cruise lines offer short cruises of 2 or 3 nights which makes the perfect weekend getaway and an affordable price.

A family get-together where there is something for everyone

Love to spend time with your folks but need space to do your own thing too? Or looking for a way for grandparents to spend quality time with the grandkids while you relax? Multi-generation cruises are more popular than ever.

Cruise lines offer large family suites, adjoining cabins, and venues where you can sit together for dinner each evening. It makes for a seriously memorable family holiday. And possibly one of the most relaxing you will ever have.

Which cruise lines are best for the younger crowd or young families?

Most young cruise guests want fun, entertainment with a lively atmosphere, the chance to meet others, and endless activities on board while we are all still active enough to join in.

Choose a newer cruise ship belonging to the Oasis class ships of Royal Caribbean or the new Breakaway Plus class from Norwegian Cruise Line, for example. Bigger ships mean more of everything. These are our firm favorites if you are part of the younger crowd:

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean (voted time and again as the best cruise line) and their unique Oasis-class ships are the biggest ships at sea. Packed full of activities, you will never be bored. When docked in port, these ships will outsize the neighboring ship, and you will understand that you genuinely are holidaying on a floating resort.

  • Oasis of the Seas
  • Allure of the Seas
  • Harmony of the Seas
  • Symphony of the Seas
  • Wonder of the Seas
  • Icon of the Seas (scheduled for its debut sailing in 2023)
  • Utopia of the Seas (scheduled for its debut sailing in 2024)

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line has an excellent reputation for solo travelers and has solo cabins, so you can avoid paying full fare for a regular-size cabin with single occupancy. They are also popular with young families and travelers for fun activities and their many restaurant choices onboard. Some ships have around 28 different venues where you can choose to eat. They offer a “free at sea” concept where you can choose what you want to include in your cruise at one fixed price. Look at the newer ships in Norwegian’s Breakaway Plus class:

  • Norwegian Encore
  • Norwegian Bliss
  • Norwegian Escape
  • Norwegian Joy

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line has long been associated with being the party cruise line. It includes themed cruises, famous DJs, and fabulous deck parties that suit young adults looking for fun. You need not look much further if you’re looking for festivities from the moment you board your cruise ship. Our favorite Carnival Cruise Line ship is the newest Carnival Mardi Gras.

And it makes sense that this cruise ship, with the only roller coaster at sea, has its home port in the fun capital of Port Canaveral, Orlando. Young adults and the young at heart will enjoy the party, and Carnival is a less expensive option compared to the Disney cruise line.

Which cruise lines are best for the older crowd who are young at heart?

By this, we mean the older guests still looking for an active adventure.

Many of the cruise lines mentioned above will suit you too. If you still want a good level of activities but without all the bells and whistles, look at Celebrity Cruise Line as a good alternative. Celebrity Cruises has a reputation for attracting a slightly older crowd, with an excellent dining experience onboard while still having great entertainment on board.

Find your inner adventurer with an expedition cruise

But if you are a true adventure seeker looking for something out of the ordinary, expedition cruises may be for you. If you have a more expendable income and a bigger budget, expedition ships can take you on unique adventures to further points on the globe.

While these expedition cruises come at a premium price, they are often unforgettable. You will try new activities you have never thought you would do. You must be fit and active to join in most excursions and make the most of these cruises’ unique opportunities. An ideal choice if you are always looking for action and adventure, no matter your age.

Remember that you choose expedition cruises for the destinations and experiences you will have in these places, not for the activities onboard. Life onboard has a fun but more subdued tone focusing on guest speakers and environmental experts giving lectures. Hence, you fully immerse yourself in the off-the-beaten-track destination experience. Expedition cruises are aimed at adults, with few young families on board.

Top 8 essential search criteria when looking for the best cruise for young adults

  • Consider shorter cruise trips of between 3 to 5 nights if you have limited travel time or have a lower budget. A short cruise could be the best for young adults looking to celebrate a wedding, bachelor or bachelorette party, or just a few days away with good friends.
  • Research your itinerary and see how long your ship stays in port daily. If you are lucky to have an overnight stay, you can enjoy the local nightlife the destination offers. Do your own shore excursions to save money, as cruise shore excursions tend to be pricier.
  • Look for a departure port that is driveable or easy to reach. Cutting down on transportation expenses means more money for the onboard experience.
  • If you have a young family, look at the kid’s clubs offered by each cruise line. There are often babysitting options too. And by kids clubs, we also mean clubs for teens. So if you are doing a generation trip traveling with a large family, everyone will get the chance to meet other youngsters of a similar age.
  • If you are younger travelers cruising together, share a cabin to keep down costs. Alternatively, get adjoining cabins to share the fun! Open the connecting door, and you will feel like you and your friends will have more space. Modern cruise ships have many connecting cabins onboard.
  • Once you have booked, make sure you monitor the price of your cruise. If the price goes down, you can ask the cruise line to refund the difference! So be vigilant and check often. After all, the best cruise for young adults is also one that can save you money along the way.
  • When you have chosen the cruise line that suits you, sign up for their newsletter. You will get special offers and campaign information in your mailbox.
  • If your best cruise for young adults is one where you are traveling solo, join the roll call for your chosen cruise on Cruise Critic. In addition, find the Facebook group for your particular cruise and get to know folk before you leave home!

Cool Cruiser

Just wondering what everyone thought about specific companies for cruises. We are both 35-40. We both like parties and dancing, not too thrilled about sitting around and watching the boat move or boring stuff(to us). Thanks

You really haven't given enough information about your tastes, likes and dislikes. Do you want to use an inline skating track, climb rock climbing walls?

Do you prefer dressy dinners with excellent food or prefer dressing down and good but rather mediocre grub? Sophisticated, refined decor or the Mall of America of the Seas? PA announcements hawking bingo, pool games and the like, or solitude? Does the itenerary matter? Lots of kids or more adult like?

sorry . We enjoy partying, drinking, dancing, eating, did I say partying. Not to thrilled about solitude or bingo or anything else that does not include a frosty beverage or some food line.

Drinking and partying...................... then Carnival is right up your alley.

3,000+ Club

I'd have to say Carnival's was more of a party ship than RCI's ("not that there's anything wrong with that") ;) Both were fun!

Not too thrilled about sitting around watching the boat move?!

LOL! That's just TOO funny.. Was this an experience from a previous cruise?

I just can't help but ask!

I can't think of one place other than HAL where you 'sit and watch the boat move' as not too much else on HAL does! But that's coming from someone who is not HAL sail age. I am sure to them, they're just speeding along!

They're correct, Carnival is known for it's lively vegas style drinking partying crowd. But so are the short RCC cruises, like to the Bahamas and stuff like that. Try one of the nicer larger Carnival ships. You should be able to get variety plus partying there.

i thought there were plenty of people having a good time on our last adventure of the seas cruise- the bars were pretty full, the disco was swinging- the casino was okay-but everyone was having fun everywhere- the party is what you make it- carnival is a party ship too though- all that we have been on anyway- good luck and have a great time whichever you choose

We sail Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Carnival and like all of them. These are my favorite things about each line. Each line has a mix of age groups, but Carnival definetely attracts people under 40 on their caribbean cruises. The Mexican Riviera during the winter months and Alaska during the Spring attract the elderly. Wait until warmer weather for those destinations if you want a better mix of ages. My likes & dislikes:

Norwegian (Dawn)our favorite ship: Freestyle Dining eating where and when you want choosing from many restaurants on ship-- Italian, Mexican, French, Steak House, Chinese, Japanese, American, English Pub, BBQ, Buffets, NY Deli, etc. (Loved the rice and lomein in Blue Lagoon.)

Great Band in Main Lounge Every Night w/smoking & non-smoking sections.

(60's-present) Variety of music each night was fun for every age group.

Movie Cinema was very popular. Most ships don't have one.

Casino was larger than most ships and had a hallway for those who didn't want to go through casino to Theater each night.

2 for 1 DRINKS AFTER 11PM. Buy a 12 pack and pay for a 6pack. Our refrig. was full. Other cruiselines only offer a drink of the day.

Royal Caribbean: Beautifully deocrated ships. Excellent Entertainment.

Lots of athletic activities: miniature golf, rock climbing wall, etc. Looking forward to upcoming cruise in October on newer Jewel of the Seas because they will offer a couple more dining options than our last RCL cruise. Negative: I get sick of eating in the same dining room with the same waiter and same guests on a 10 day cruise. Royal Caribbean definetely needs to add more restaurants for those guests who get bored with the one dining room and only have the buffet as an option.

Carnival: Definetely caters to younger people than older people. Best pizzeria w/caesar salad and ice cream 24 hours. Casino on our next Carnival (Triump) cruise is reportedly one of the largest casinos on ships.

Carnival's Entertainment is usally rated #1 by the Travel Channel on their review of cruiselines. Our last Carnival cruise had Kareoke every night from 10-midnight. We missed that on our last Royal Caribbean cruise. They only had it once or twice.

Compare prices, ports of call, #sea days, and restaurant options. Try a different line each year and see which you like best.

I don't know any 30-40 year olds who DON'T like to enjoy themselves...

..but my vote goes for Voyager class!:D

We are in our mid- to late-30s and are taking an RCI cruise in August. I think that in addition to the cruise line, it'll also depend on where the cruise is going. Carnival is known more to the "party" atmosphere, but I'm also a firm believer that fun is what you make of it...we also usually take cruises where there are a lot of ports so you're never bored...not necessarily the most relaxing vacations, but definitely some of the most adventurous!!!

fireguy091

Lou, you have been on 4 cruises. You should have a pretty good handle on it by now. What exactly are ya looking for. Stay clear of Hal and X and you should be fine.

I have a good handle on it. I am convinced that Voyager class is the right fit for me, but since I have not cruised on some of the other companies lines I wanted to make sure I was not missing something.

I can't imagine you'd be disappointed on the Voyager class. Go have some fun!

Consider a ship with a good gym.

I'm 32 and I love RCCL. I have been on Carnival and princess. Nice cruise line but RCCL is a mix of both. Still have a party atmosphere like Carnival but has nice ships like Princess.

lol been on 4 cruises on my way to number 5 and will never set foot in the gym.

I actually would like to hide by the exit doors of the gyms and hit everyone that comes out of it with a stick.

wrp96

The only thing I use the gym for during vacation is to watch cute, buff guys work out.

Royal Carribean out of Galveston beat Carnival out of New Orleans for partying in my experience. We're partiers and enjoyed both!!!! :D

Why are you asking this question on the Royal Caribbean Board? You would probably get more information if you posted on the Question Board.

wolfganghowell

wolfganghowell

I think it can vary. We are 40s DINKS and like to play too but we have found a fun group on Celebrity. It is a quieter more refined atmosphere but not stuffy. Rhapsody is looser and a shipload of Texans can always find a party! Wild times Carnival is probably your choice but for a lot of fun without drunken 21 year olds, RCCL and Celebrity can offer a lot of fun.

I asked this question on this board for a very specific reason, because my personal favorate is voyager class ships and I was wanting to get an opinion from people who liked rccl cruises also. (similar situations)

Thanks for the advise though!!

hstrybuf

I voted other since I couldn't vote for more than one. I've had a great time on every cruise, no matter the line. :)

10 Best Cruises for Singles of All Ages

From expeditions to around-the-world voyages, these sailings are perfect for solo travelers.

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

Traveling the world without having to pack and unpack multiple times is ideal. And on a cruise, that's a reality as you head from destination to destination on what is basically a moving luxury hotel (or a floating city, in some cases).

Being able to sleep in Bratislava and wake up in Budapest in five-star accommodations without having to drag all your stuff with you is as convenient as it is luxurious. But cruises aren't just for couples or families — they're great for singles as well.

Colleen McDaniel, the editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic , tells Travel + Leisure that cruises are a great place to meet new people. Some ships have single cabins, host parties for single passengers, or even waive the single supplement fee (river cruises tend to do that most often).

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line offers studio cabins for single travelers that include access to an exclusive lounge with complimentary espresso and snacks. "One of the benefits of sailing as a single is cruises are generally social. That's how they're designed," McDaniel says. "If you're somebody who's comfortable traveling by themselves and looks to make friends on vacation, there's no shortage of people you're going to meet."

But while younger travelers might want to hop around Europe and party every night, someone in their 50s may be interested in a longer cruise with opportunities for cultural immersion. Whatever your travel style, here are the best cruises for singles of any age.

Cruises for Singles in Their 20s

Cruises that last three to five nights are great for singles in their 20s, in part because they're less expensive, McDaniel says. If you do end up having to pay for a single supplement, "it's a little bit less of a hit to your wallet."

Cruise line Virgin Voyages offers exciting journeys aboard their ultra-instagrammable ship, Scarlet Lady . The four-night Fire and Sunset Soirees cruise from Miami is ideal for travelers in their 20s or 30s looking for a healthy mix of party and wellness.

Another great option is a three-day cruise to the Bahamas from Miami on Norwegian Sky . The ship was refurbished in 2019 and offers 10 dining options, a full-service Starbucks, and a casino for late-night bonding around the blackjack table with your new shipmates.

Cruises for Singles in Their 30s

According to McDaniel, cruisers in their 30s are likely looking for a good mix of "bustling nightlife and engaging in classes, but they also really want to explore and experience culture." She says river cruises that offer things like silent discos and paint-and-wine classes appeal to this age group.

Expedition cruise line Atlas Ocean does not charge a single supplement fee for certain staterooms on its luxury yachts, making it a great fit for solo travelers. The cruise line is known for its culturally immersive sailings, which include tours with local guides, artisanal workshops, and even drone photography classes. Consider the Folklore & Waterfalls cruise from Reykjavik to Dublin for a chance to capture jaw-dropping landscapes while meeting like-minded travelers.

Other travelers might want to opt for a South American adventure with National Geographic. The 10-day Upper Amazon river cruise aboard the Delfin II offers a chance to spot diverse wildlife within this impressive ecosystem.

Cruises for Singles in Their 40s

Upscale, bigger cruises on ships from Princess , Holland America , and Celebrity will likely appeal to cruisers in their 40s, McDaniel says. These cruises tend to be a bit more expensive, but "appeal because they have some really great excursions and might go off the beaten path. They're destination-immersive experiences."

The seven-night Galapagos Southern Loop on Celebrity Xpedition is one fantastic option. The Galapagos Islands are a great destination for solo travelers and this cruise is a solid way to see them. Search for sea turtles, sea lions, and blue-footed boobies during the day, and spend the evening in the ship's hot tub or take in one of the nightly lectures by certified naturalists from the Galapagos National Park.

A seven-day Mediterranean with Greek Isles and Turkey cruise aboard Princess Cruises' Sun Princess is an additional option for travelers hoping to see another part of the world best explored by ship.

Cruises for Singles in Their 50s

McDaniel says that a river cruise is a great option for someone in their 50s, with some lines waiving the single supplement fee and putting age restrictions on passengers (since you may not want little kids running around). Some companies, she notes, do a great job of hosting single mixers, which adds to the social experience. A cruise along the Danube or Rhine rivers is always a great choice, and there are several lines to choose from.

Sail along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers on Viking's Grand European Tour , which starts in Amsterdam and ends in Budapest. Along the way, the ship stops in charming towns and major European capitals for a well-rounded trip through continental Europe.

The twelve-day Cities of Light cruise , also from Viking River Cruises, carries passengers between Paris and Prague with several stops in Germany along the way. On board, sip a glass of wine and enjoy the sight of the cities slipping by.

Cruises for Single Seniors

A world cruise is a great option for seniors, McDaniel says, as they tend to have more free time. These cruises visit multiple countries over a longer period of time, and after a while, the boat feels like home.

"One of the great things about being a senior is you tend to have a far more flexible schedule," she says. "You also likely have a bit more disposable income."

The 133-day Grand Voyage Pole to Pole from Holland America Line offers a round-trip journey from Fort Lauderdale, covering Antarctica, South America, Europe, and Canada. Overnight stops include Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, Lisbon, and Reykjavik, Iceland, among others.

Those looking to explore both the Eastern and Western Hemisphere might enjoy Cunard's 98-night New York to Southhampton cruise. The World Voyage aboard the Queen Anne includes stops in the Caribbean and Central America before crossing the International Date Line to Samoa, New Zealand, and Australia. The ship visits various countries in Asia, such as Vietnam and Malaysia, before heading to South Africa, Spain, and England. On a cruise this long, even the shiest solo traveler is bound to make a few friends.

Editor's Note

Kids can make or break your family cruise. If they're bored and hate the food options, they will loudly and repeatedly express their displeasure. Pick the wrong cruise ship, and parents will feel as trapped as if they were stranded on a deserted island … with biting crabs underfoot.

The best cruises for kids take advantage of ships with endless fun for the under-18 crowd, plentiful dining that appeals to both young palates and bottomless teen tummies, accommodations and ship services that keep families in mind, and opportunities to meet and hang out with peers. No matter your family size or price range, you can find some incredible vacations at sea that will have kids exclaiming, "Best cruise ever!" by the end of the week.

Disney Wish

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

No one is surprised that Disney is such a kid-friendly cruise line — but what might be surprising is how much there is for adults to do and enjoy , too. That's especially true on the new Disney Wish , which debuted in the summer of 2022.

Disney Wish has four kids clubs divided by age, but the main Oceaneer Club for 3- to 12-year-olds has an all-new and exciting grand entrance. Kids get to enter the club by slide — and once inside, can explore the club's spaces themed to "Star Wars," fairy tales, Marvel and Disney Imagineers.

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

Along with the kids club on Disney Wish, junior cruisers will find two movie theaters with first-run Disney movies, Broadway-caliber shows featuring Aladdin and the Little Mermaid and dining experiences themed around Arendelle from "Frozen" and the Worlds of Marvel .

In addition to a "Star Wars-" themed bar and adults-only fine dining restaurants, adults will appreciate the little touches on Wish that make family cruising easier — split bathrooms in most cabins, a drop-off nursery, a splash area for toddlers and restaurant staff members who will offer high chairs and puree baby food.

Disney Wish sails short three- and four-night trips from Port Canaveral , Florida (near Orlando) that include a stop at Castaway Cay, Disney's private island , with its family beach, supervised child care, splash pad and strollers to borrow.

A nearly identical sister ship, Disney Treasure , will debut in 2024.

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

It hasn't even launched yet, and we're already confident that Royal Caribbean 's new Icon of the Seas , soon to be the largest ship afloat, will be one of the top cruise ships for kids. Kids will never be bored on a ship with a six-slide water park, wild ropes course, surf simulator, rock-climbing wall, sports court and Surfside — a half deck of play spaces and restaurants devoted to little kids and their families.

Kids (and parents) who like a good show can gasp as ice skaters land jumps on a rocking ship, and acrobatic divers flip and splash in the AquaTheater, now up high on the ship under a glass dome. Don't miss pizza and parades on the Royal Promenade, Icon's indoor shopping strip.

The kid-friendly cruise ship will also have innovative new family cabins and suites, some with separate kids' rooms, to better accommodate guests of all ages. The Ultimate Family Townhouse will be a massive three-floor living space with a screening room, karaoke machine, in-suite slide and a backyard that leads out to the Surfside family neighborhood.

Icon of the Seas will sail weeklong Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Miami beginning in January 2024.

Norwegian Encore

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

Norwegian Encore has a more grown-up vibe than many of the family-focused ships on our list, but its onboard attractions make it a huge hit with teens. Its top decks lure older kids with one of the biggest go-kart tracks in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet and an open-air laser tag arena ideal for shooting matches under the stars. A huge virtual reality playground features rides and games that blow the standard cruise ship arcade out of the water.

Note to parents: Cruiselong passes for the go-kart race track , virtual reality games and laser tag do not come cheap. Be prepared to pull out your wallet to keep the teens happy.

At night, teens can feed their growing bodies with tacos, hibachi and barbecue, plus 24/7 burgers and comfort food at The Local. Afterward, they'll agree to be seen in public with their parents at a show as cool as "Choir of Man." It's an easy concession, as they know they can always escape to the teen club, Entourage, to hang out with the cool kids late at night.

Norwegian Encore's best cruises for kids span multiple oceans. The ship spends its summers in Alaska and winters in the Caribbean, with a handful of Panama Canal and Pacific Coast sailings in between.

Carnival Celebration

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

Passengers and crew members on Carnival Cruise Line ships come ready to meet new friends or share a laugh, a story and a drink with their shipmates. Social kids will fit right in and love the line's huge, new ship Carnival Celebration . They can make friends at the Family Harbor Lounge, Camp Ocean and Dr. Seuss Bookville; older kids will enjoy the teen and tween clubs conveniently located near Guy Fieri's burger stand and the video arcade.

If you're looking for the best cruises for kids, Carnival Celebration and its near-identical twin fleet mate, Mardi Gras , are the only cruise ships boasting a top-deck roller coaster called Bolt. (That is until a third sister, Carnival Jubilee, debuts in late 2023.) A ride here is Instagram gold and the ultimate bragging rights for kids on vacation. The coaster dominates the Ultimate Playground area of the ship, where young cruisers can challenge their new friends to miniature golf, waterslide races, basketball and ropes course domination.

Kids who love a good food court can meet up with friends or family at several no-fee, casual eateries, including Shaq's Big Chicken restaurant and a trio of Street Eats venues featuring dumplings, meat on a stick and loaded French fries. All-hours pizza and ice cream will keep the whole family fueled up for the interactive "Family Feud Live" show.

Related: The ultimate guide to Carnival Cruise Line ships and itineraries

Carnival Celebration's kid-friendly cruises include weeklong Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Miami. Its sister Mardi Gras sails similar Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral, Florida (near Orlando). Carnival Jubilee will be based out of Galveston, Texas, and offer seven-night Western Caribbean cruises only.

Sun Princess

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

It may seem odd that two of our top ships for kids haven't debuted yet. However, like Icon of the Seas, Princess Cruises ' new 4,300-passenger Sun Princess will be heads and shoulders above the rest of the fleet in terms of family entertainment. If you're booking a multigenerational family cruise for 2024 or beyond, you will definitely want to keep this kid-friendly cruise ship in mind.

Sun Princess will be the first Princess cruise ship to feature an expansive upper-deck activity zone that kids will love. Named Park19, it will feature nine fun-in-the-sun activities spanning three decks. The attractions include the Sea Breeze Rollglider (imagine a safer version of hang-gliding from an elevated track), a climbing structure with obstacles and a slide, a ropes course, a splash zone and a sports court.

Inside the ship, Firefly Park will have drop-off kid programming and family play spaces for kids 6 months to 7 years old. Tweens and teens will each have their own hangouts, Neon Grove and The Underground, with cozy lounge furniture and plenty of video and other games.

Sun Princess will split its time between Mediterranean cruises out of Civitavecchia (the port for Rome), Piraeus (the port for Athens) and Barcelona as well as Caribbean sailings from Fort Lauderdale.

MSC Seascape

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

MSC Cruises ' MSC Seascape is a floating megaresort with something for everyone, making its sailings some of the best cruises for kids. The ship stands out from its sisters because of its Robotron amusement park-style ride . Three riders at a time buckle into seating attached to a robotic arm, which then twists and turns to fly the riders over the ship and sea.

Water babies will make a break for the Pirates Cove Aquapark, with slides, a splash zone and a rope bridge. Other kids might spend their parents' money on more virtual fun, indulging in F1 race car simulators, VR motorcycle racing, a 4D movie theater and a video arcade. Family groups can split into teams for sports court competitions or participate in organized games that rely on the latest technology to challenge guests of all ages.

The ship's Lego-themed Doremi Land kids club has dedicated spaces for babies, kids and teens. The 7,567-square-foot space includes two Lego rooms (one for little kids to play with Duplos, the other with regular Lego bricks for older kids); the area also includes three spaces for teens — a gaming area (with VR options), a hangout with ping pong and foosball and a dance club.

And let's not forget the line's amazing pizza (including dessert versions slathered in Nutella) that families are sure to love.

MSC Seascape sails seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Miami.

AmaWaterways' AmaLea

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

The typical river cruise draws a lot of retirees — except when Adventures by Disney partners with AmaWaterways. The two travel companies have created a river cruise vacation that is fun for grown-ups and kids.

AmaLea makes our list of the best cruise ships for kids because it's one of the ships AmaWaterways custom-built for family cruises. Certain twin balcony cabins sleep three, and suites sleep four to accommodate kids, with connecting cabin options for families who need more space. Unlike many river ships, AmaLea has a pool, as well as a surprise kid hit — giant outdoor chess.

While other ships sail the Seine and Rhine rivers, AmaLea travels the Danube through Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. Adventures by Disney makes the most of your time with shore excursions planned to entertain kids and adults, with options for supervised kid activities while parents head out on more grown-up tours. Your family might meet farm animals in Hungary, play hide-and-seek in a palace's labyrinth maze in Austria and hang around in a treetop playground in Germany.

On board, kids' menus are available, and the occasional pajama party whisks kids away for pizza and a movie while adults linger over dinner.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE 2024-26 GUIDE

When it comes to planning the ultimate getaway, there are so many reasons why cruise vacations rank among the most popular travel options. First of all, they’re completely stress-free. On a cruise vacation, all the planning is taken care of by the cruise line — from the  destinations  you sail to and the  shore excursions  available at each port, to a full range of  entertainment  and activities happening onboard every day. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your  experience  even more all-inclusive, you can opt for  beverage  and  specialty dining  packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation.

Buying life insurance in your 30s can be smart, especially since rates increase as you age. Who should get term life insurance .

According to Alison Salka, Ph.D., senior vice president and director of LIMRA Research, term life insurance is generally a good option “if someone knows they’re only going to need [coverage] for a short period of time,” such as while they pay off a mortgage or have children living with them. She also points to term life insurance as the product that is typically more affordable and easy to understand, particularly when compared to permanent life insurance , which is generally more complex.

Pros and cons of term life insurance

A term life insurance policy has many benefits, but there are also some drawbacks. Here’s what to consider.

What factors affect term life insurance rates?

Factors that will influence your term life insurance rate include:

  • Selected death benefit.
  • Additional riders, if applicable.
  • Policy term.
  • Smoking status.
  • Marijuana use.
  • Medical history.
  • Medical history of your parents and siblings.
  • Height and weight.
  • Prescription history.
  • Risky occupations or hobbies.
  • History of alcohol or substance abuse or treatment.
  • Criminal history.
  • Credit history.
  • Driving record (such as DUIs).

How to find the best term life insurance

There are a lot of term life options available. These three steps can help you choose the term life insurance policy most suited to your needs.

1. Decide how much life insurance you need.

Your reasons for purchasing a life insurance policy will dictate how much coverage you need. Here are common reasons for buying term life insurance:

  • Replacing income for a number of years.
  • Paying off a mortgage.
  • Covering other debts, such as outstanding personal loans.
  • Paying for a child’s education, whether grade school, high school or college tuition and related expenses.
  • Covering funeral expenses. The median cost of a funeral with viewing and burial is $8,300.
Expert tip: When factoring how much coverage you need, remember to account for any existing assets your family can rely on, such as savings accounts, retirement plans and educational savings accounts (ESAs), like 529s and Coverdell ESAs.

2. Determine your life insurance term length.

Term life insurance policies are commonly available for terms of 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years. Some insurers offer term lengths of up to 40 years, while others, like Corebridge Financial, offer customizable terms, such as 12 or 18 years.

Your reason for purchasing coverage should guide your term length decision. If your goal is to provide financial security for your family, consider a term that will last until your children reach the age of economic independence. If you want to ensure a partner can cover mortgage costs should you die, opt for a plan that lasts the duration of your mortgage.

You can often renew a term life insurance policy, but your rate will likely increase each year you renew it. Choosing the right term length from the start can help you lock in a rate and coverage that matches your needs.

3. Shop around and compare life insurance quotes.

Many of the best term life insurance companies offer policies with similar terms and coverage options, but not all are equal. Before you choose a policy, get term life insurance quotes from multiple insurers, and keep these tips in mind:

  • Check each life insurance company’s financial stability rating. Some insurers list ratings on their site, but you can also go directly to the major independent review agencies, such as AM Best , Fitch or Standard & Poor’s (S&P).
  • Take note of policy features and benefits. For instance, some policies are convertible, meaning you can convert them to permanent coverage up until a certain point (and usually at a higher rate). Other features to look out for are riders (either included or available as add-ons) and guaranteed renewable policies.
  • Read expert reviews. Check term life insurance reviews from credible sources and note the reviewer’s methodology. This will explain what factors they considered when rating or scoring a specific insurer.
Expert tip: You can get quotes from multiple insurers, work with an independent broker or use term life insurance online marketplaces to compare policies and rates. Just be sure to compare quotes for the same term length and amount of coverage.

4. Speak to a financial advisor

A term life insurance policy is a commitment — one that your family may be relying on. You should feel confident in your purchase, and according to Salka, speaking to a financial advisor is a good idea. Life insurance and policy features evolve, she says. “Having someone who can sift through all of that with an understanding of your needs” can be an immense help.

Best term life insurance FAQs

Term life insurance is a type of life insurance policy that locks in coverage and rates for a specific period, such as 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years. When the level term period expires, your coverage ends unless you renew the policy or purchase a new one, often at a higher rate.

If you die during the policy term, your life insurance beneficiary will receive a death benefit when you purchase the policy. If you die after the policy expires, your beneficiary will not receive the death benefit.

You can choose one or more beneficiaries, with common choices including a spouse, partner, child or grandchild.

A term life insurance policy typically won’t pay out a death benefit under the following circumstances:

  • Death after the life insurance term expires and the policy was not renewed.
  • Death due to criminal activity, like driving under the influence.
  • Death by suicide if it occurs within the first few years of buying the policy, often two years. This is something known as a suicide clause.
  • A beneficiary is under investigation for or accused of playing a role in the insured’s death.

Term life insurance secures temporary coverage that is locked in for a specific rate and number of years. It is generally cheaper than whole life insurance and is a good option if you are on a budget or only want coverage for a specific amount of time.

Whole life insurance is permanent life insurance , so it lasts your lifetime as long as you pay your premiums. It can also have a cash value or savings component that can be tapped into while you’re alive.

Each offers its own set of pros and cons and pricing, so if you’re unsure which one is right for you, it’s best to assess your needs and consult with a financial advisor who can help you determine the best life insurance company and policy for your short- and long-term goals.

No, term life insurance policies don’t offer a cash value component . If you want a life insurance policy with a cash value component, you should consider permanent life insurance. There are several types of permanent life insurance, including whole life insurance , universal life insurance and variable life insurance.

Term life insurance may be worth it if you have people who rely on you financially, such as children or a spouse. Common reasons to purchase life insurance include covering a child’s tuition or an existing mortgage, ensuring your family can maintain their current standard of living or covering other existing debts or end-of-life expenses.

Most term life insurance companies offer policies with terms that last from 10 to 30 years, though some companies, like Banner/General and Protective, offer policies with terms as long as 40 years.

If you want a policy that lasts longer than 30 or 40 years, it’s a good idea to consider permanent coverage, like whole life insurance .

Term life insurance is a better option if you’re looking for temporary coverage at an affordable rate. That’s because term life insurance rates are lower than whole life insurance rates, and you can choose a specific term length based on your financial needs.

Whole life insurance may be a better option if you’re looking for life insurance that will cover you indefinitely. A whole life policy usually lasts a lifetime, meaning you won’t have to worry about renewing it after 10, 20 or 30 years. It can also be a better fit if you’re looking for a policy that offers an investment or savings component. Whole life insurance policies typically come with a cash value component that can be tapped into while you’re alive.

If you’re not sure which option is best, consider speaking to a financial advisor who can help you choose the best life insurance policy based on your finances and coverage goals.

A pre-existing condition can affect your rate, either directly or indirectly. If you’re shopping for coverage and opt for a policy that follows a traditional underwriting process (you’re required to complete a health exam and questionnaire) or an accelerated underwriting process (the insurer uses available data, like your prescription drug history, to determine rates), your rate may increase based on the nature of your pre-existing condition.

If you opt for a no-exam life insurance or guaranteed approval policy so you can avoid a health exam or questionnaire, you’re also likely to see higher rates than those associated with a traditional term life insurance policy.

Your age, gender and desired type of life insurance and amount of coverage are primary factors in your life insurance rate. Life insurance for seniors is more expensive than coverage for someone in their 20s and 30s, for instance. And the more coverage you purchase and the longer the policy length, the higher your life insurance premium will be.

Other factors include your:

  • Family medical history.
  • Nicotine or marijuana use status.
  • Occupation and hobbies.
  • Driving record.
  • Criminal record.
  • Additional riders, as applicable.

Insurers can determine life insurance rates differently, so shop around and compare quotes to find the cheapest life insurance policy.

Decreasing term life insurance lowers the policy’s death benefit over time. It’s typically a more affordable type of life insurance and you may not need to pass a medical exam to secure a policy.

Decreasing term life insurance might be of interest if you think your loved ones will need less financial help as time goes on.

Term life insurance provides beneficiaries a death benefit if the insured dies while the policy is in force. While most deaths are covered, there are some circumstances under which a life insurance provider may deny a claim. For instance, a life insurance company may deny a claim if the insured:

  • Dies by suicide within the first two years of the policy.
  • Is murdered by a beneficiary.
  • Lies on their life insurance application.

The details of a term life insurance policy vary by insurer and policy. Always contact your life insurance company about policy details and coverage limitations.

Term life insurance coverage typically ends at the end of the policy term. However, you may be able to renew your policy or convert it to permanent life insurance, such as a whole life insurance policy. If you outlive your policy term and do not renew or convert the policy, your beneficiaries will not receive a death benefit after you die .

Symetra is the best term life insurance company. Pacific Life also gets a 5-star rating in our analysis of the best term life insurance companies. Both companies offer competitive rates, multiple term lengths and policies that can be converted to permanent coverage.

Other companies worth considering for term life insurance include:

  • Corebridge
  • Banner Life/Legal & General America

The best life insurance company for you is one that meets both your coverage and budget needs, has a strong financial strength score and few consumer complaints. Always get and compare at least three life insurance quotes and policies before deciding which policy to buy.

No, you cannot cash out a term life insurance policy. Term policies do not include a cash value component .

Permanent life insurance policies, such as whole life insurance or variable life insurance, usually have a cash value component that you may be able to cash out.

The best coverage amount for a term life insurance policy reflects the financial needs of your life insurance beneficiaries and your reason for buying coverage. Here are some things to consider:

  • Do you want to replace your salary? If so, for how long?
  • Do you want to cover a mortgage? If so, what’s the remaining balance?
  • Do you want to pay for a child’s tuition?
  • Are there any other debts you want covered?
  • Will your beneficiary need to use the policy death benefit for end-of-life expenses?
  • Do you want a portion of your death benefit to be used as an inheritance?

You can also use a life insurance calculator to determine your needs or speak to a financial advisor who can help you assess your coverage needs.

Meet the 28-year-old Singaporean chief officer of a Celebrity Cruises ship who’s sailed around the Caribbean

Izza Haziqah Abdul Rahman

She wakes up to breathtaking sunrises over the vast ocean and enjoys meals that rival the best fine-dining restaurants. She’s sailed to dozens of countries and taken part in rescue operations at sea. She leads a team of dedicated sailors, ensuring that a premiere cruise ship remains neat and efficient for its passengers.

Meet Sahira Sha’ri, the Singaporean chief officer of Celebrity Beyond, a luxury cruise ship launched in March 2021 that welcomed its first guests in April 2022. The ship, owned by Celebrity Cruises, has 17 decks and capacity for nearly 4,000 passengers and 1,400 crew members.

At the helm is Captain Kate McCue, an American social media sensation with over 950,000 Instagram followers and 3 million TikTok fans , who shares her adventures from the captain’s seat.

As one of the two chief officers of Celebrity Beyond, Sahira is an integral part of the bridge team, responsible for navigation, communication and safety.

Sahira oversees various operational tasks, including managing the day-to-day deck operations, conducting scheduled inspections of the ship’s tanks, galleys and other areas, and leading a team of sailors, junior officers, security staff and more to ensure a smooth and safe cruise for everyone on board.

She works 10 to 12 hours a day, with each contract lasting six to nine months. During this time, she lives onboard Celebrity Beyond, sailing from port to port on the ship’s various cruise itineraries, such as around the Bahamas and Cayman Islands in the Caribbean.

Her breaks are typically three months long, which she spends with her family in Singapore.

A YEARNING FOR AN UNCONVENTIONAL LIFE

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

Before joining Celebrity Beyond in 2021, Sahira, who has a diploma in nautical studies from Singapore Polytechnic, worked on cargo and merchant ships, often the only female seafarer among dozens of men.

Since graduating in 2017, she has spent months at sea on such ships, undertaking physically demanding work and sailing to different countries around the world.

“It’s not a life for everyone,” the 28-year-old told CNA Women. Although, for this eldest of two siblings, it's exactly what she has always wanted to do.

“Since young, I knew I wasn’t for the conventional life.

“I just couldn’t imagine doing a deskbound job, staying put at home in Singapore. I knew I wanted to travel and have different adventures.

“I remember looking at the cruise ships tied up at Marina South Pier and thinking how impressive it’d be to be able to work on such ships.”

Still, being away from her family for most of the year isn’t easy. She has missed out on significant events, like her younger brother’s wedding, the birth of her nephew, and many Hari Raya gatherings.

She copes by calling her parents, especially her mother, every other day, and keeping them updated about her ocean adventures. Her parents were understandably worried about their daughter’s decision to work at sea, but have since come around.

“I love what I do, but it never gets easier to say goodbye to my parents when I leave home for work,” she admitted. “I’m always thankful for their support and prayers.”

GETTING A JOB ON CELEBRITY BEYOND

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

When the pandemic struck in 2020, Sahira was laid off from her position as a third officer with a shipping company, a junior role in which she assisted senior officers with their onboard responsibilities. Consequently, she had to return to Singapore.

“It was hard to find a job because based on my experience, not many shipping companies would hire women as officers on a ship, and the pandemic made things more complicated since many people weren’t allowed to travel,” she said.

“I applied everywhere, and though I didn’t have any experience on cruise ships, I even tried those too.”

The layoff turned out to be a blessing in disguise when, in 2021, Celebrity Cruises, a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean, began mass hiring in preparation for their newest ship, Celebrity Beyond.

Sahira applied for a position there, as well as to regional cruise companies. She was accepted by all of them but chose to join Celebrity Beyond as its second officer.

“It would have been safer to go for the regional or local companies where most of the employees are from Singapore or other parts of Southeast Asia,” she said. “But I felt like I wanted a broader perspective and a different culture – so Celebrity felt perfect for me.”

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

Sahira has been promoted twice since joining Celebrity Beyond in October 2021 – to first officer in September 2022, then to chief officer in December last year.

As a senior officer, her work also involves helping humanitarian efforts at sea, and helicopter evacuations for medical emergencies.

“The work might sound repetitive, but the truth is there’s always something unique every day,” she said.

“I was part of a rescue operation where we saw abandoned boats from Cuba en route to the US, and I was also involved in helicopter evacuations in the middle of an emergency.

“Knowing that I make even just a small contribution to saving lives makes my job a lot more interesting and meaningful.”

THE BEST PART OF THE CRUISE SHIP IS THE WORK CULTURE

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

Sahira is grateful for the open work culture set by Captain McCue.

“I work in a highly diverse team and so many officers are from all around the world,” she said. “It makes us more understanding and open with one another, and we don’t shy away from talking about identity and culture.

I wanted a broader perspective and a different culture – so Celebrity felt perfect for me.

One of the great things is that most of the bridge team are women, she added, a far cry from when she was the sole female on a ship.

“Here, there are so many of us,” she said. “It does make a difference in terms of how issues are resolved and how we address problems onboard – there’s a lot more empathy, our well-being is taken care of, and the camaraderie between us is strong.

Her being a Malay Muslim from Singapore has also helped to broaden many of her colleagues’ perceptions of the country, which many of her colleagues know little about.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Captain Kate McCue (@captainkatemccue)

“Captain Kate is a great leader,” Sahira said. “She is generous as much as she’s a fun personality online and offline. She keeps up with our personal lives, and she gives us a lot of opportunities to grow as staff members.”

One of Sahira’s most unforgettable moments was having her parents board Celebrity Beyond for 18 days as the ship sailed through the Mediterranean Sea.

On Day 12 of their trip, Captain McCue invited Sahira to show her parents how she steered the ship out of port, even though she wasn’t rostered for duty that day. Her parents were notably proud and impressed.

“It’s hard to explain to my parents exactly what I do as an officer, so when they saw me steering the ship, they were so surprised and looked happy,” Sahira said. “They were so dumbfounded I could do that with such a large ship when I can’t even drive a car!”

best cruise ship for 30 year olds

Sahira is currently on a three-month break and will return to Celebrity Beyond in mid-June. This time, her break coincided with being home for Hari Raya in April.

“It’s my first Hari Raya in so long so I was really glad and excited to meet my family and share stories about life on board,” she said.

“It may not be the conventional life but I wouldn’t change a life at sea for anything else.”

71 Best Gifts for 11-Year-Old Girls Still Finding Themselves

For socializing, relaxing, and self-care!

adolescent girl using a blue instant camera

If you buy something from the links on this page, we may earn a commission. Why Trust Us?

Many eleven-year-old girls are in a tricky transition period where they aren't little kids anymore, but they aren't quite old enough to participate in many teenage activities (although, they might think they are). Their likes often switch from playing with stuffies, Legos, babies, and other "little kid" toys to more sophisticated things like photography, jewelry making, art, and self-care. They're at the age of introspection, possibly for the first time, with blossoming interests.

Maybe it’s the sports she plays after school, the sketches in her notebook, or the absolute comfort she likes to feel from slippers and cozy clothes when she's home from school. If you’re not sure what she's interested in these days, we’ve rounded up gifts for 11-year-old girls that we’re confident she’ll love (and that you’ll feel great about giving her, too!).

From room decor to books to games, puzzles , and more, show your tween you care with these gifts for 11-year-old girls that will entertain, inspire, and (we hope!) help them on the journey through their teen years.

This camera is a great gift for 11-year-old girls and it comes with a two-pack of minifilm (you can explain what film is to them from your rocking chair).

  • Trip delay insurance starting at $500 with the Travel Basic plan
  • Emergency medical and dental coverage starting at $15,000

Travelex Travel Insurance  offers three plans:

  • Travel Basic
  • Travel Select
  • Travel America

The Travelex America plan is meant for trips limited to the U.S., but it has the highest coverage limits in many areas compared to its other programs. If you're flying somewhere, the lost baggage limits are higher. Its natural strengths shine for road trippers, though. Travelex America adds coverage for roadside service and rental car coverage for unexpected accidents. It also covers pets should you be involved in an accident while on the road.

While your standard auto insurance does extend to car rentals within the U.S. for a limited time, any accident would affect future rates. Travelex would eliminate the risk of reporting to your auto insurance provider for minor incidents within its purview.

Introduction to Travel Insurance

Why travel insurance is a must-have.

The unpredictable nature of traveling – from flight cancellations to medical emergencies – can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare. Travel insurance acts as a personal safeguard, ensuring that unexpected events don't drain your wallet or ruin your trip.

Understanding Different Types of Travel Insurance

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. From single-trip travel insurance policies to annual travel insurance plans , from minimal coverage to comprehensive protection, understanding the spectrum of options is your first step in finding the right fit for your journey.

Key Features to Look for in Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance for medical emergencies.

Imagine falling ill in a foreign country; daunting, right? A robust travel insurance plan ensures you don't have to worry about how much emergency medical care while traveling will cost, even in the most remote corners of the globe. This coverage will often come in tandem with emergency medical evacuation coverage.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Benefits

Life is full of surprises, some less pleasant than others. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage ensures that you're not left out of pocket if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short. You may also look for cancel for any reason and interruption for any reason options, which will reimburse you for a percentage of your nonrefundable fees, but expands the covered reasons you can cancel a trip. You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance companies here.

Coverage for Personal Belongings and Baggage Loss

Losing your belongings is more than an inconvenience; it's losing a piece of your world. Insurance that covers personal belongings and baggage loss ensures that you're compensated for your loss, helping you to rebound and continue your adventure.

Support and Assistance Services

In times of trouble, having a lifeline can make all the difference. Look for insurance that offers 24/7 support and assistance services, giving you peace of mind that help is just a phone call away. Also, check websites that field customer reviews like Trustpilot, the Better Business Bureau, and InsureMyTrip , to see how well a company responds to customer requests.

Choosing the Best Travel Insurance

Reputation and reliability of the travel insurance provider.

A provider's reputation is not just about being well-known; it's about reliability, customer satisfaction, and the ability to deliver on promises. Researching and choosing a reputable provider is a cornerstone in ensuring your safety and satisfaction.

Understanding the Policy's Fine Print

The devil is in the details, and understanding the fine print of what your travel insurance policy covers is crucial. Be aware of coverage limits, exclusions, and the process for filing a claim to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

In the age of information, customer reviews and feedback are goldmines of insight. Learn from the experiences of others to gauge the reliability and customer service of the insurance provider you're considering. While the ratings are important, you should also look at whether or not a company responds to customer complaints.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Insurance

Knowing your policy inside out.

Familiarize yourself with every aspect of your policy – what it covers, what it doesn't, how to file a claim, and who to contact in an emergency. Being informed means being prepared.

Steps to Take When a Problem Arises

If you face an issue during your travels, knowing the immediate steps to take can make all the difference. Keep important contacts and your policy details handy, and remember, your insurance provider is there to assist you.

How to Pick the Best Travel Insurance Company for You

There isn't a one-size-fits-all policy that works perfectly for every traveler. Young, healthy solo travelers can opt for much cheaper plans that offer bare-bones coverage, while families juggling complex itineraries will do best by investing in a robust policy that can help defray any costs associated with lost baggage, delayed transportation or other trip-impeding obstacles.

That being said, you can't go wrong with a travel insurance provider that boasts a reputable history and offers a wide range of customizable plans. In some cases, you may be comparing plans that are only a few dollars' apart from each other. In such situations, you should generally opt for the insurance company that offers the strongest customer service. It's also worth considering whether or not the travel insurance provider has been reviewed by other travelers with similar itineraries to your own.

An insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth is one of the best tools for searching travel insurance policies. Once you input the specifics of your travel itinerary, you'll be able to see hundreds of search results to compare the ones that catch your eye. If the options are too overwhelming, use the filters to the left of your search page to eliminate as many irrelevant plans as possible.

How We Reviewed the Best Travel Insurance Companies

To come up with our list of the best travel insurance companies, we evaluated each insurer based on the following factors:

Guide Methodology: What We Considered

Policy Types

Travel insurance is essential, but often underused partly because people aren't getting what they want. Business Insider's 2023 travel study showed 10.65% of travelers surveyed bought cancel for any reason insurance. Cost may be a factor, but in many cases, the coverage is more affordable than you might think. Regardless, companies must offer a diverse range of coverage options. We award five stars to companies offering all standard coverages and additional options like pet and sports equipment protection.

Our 2023 travel study indicated the majority of purchases were made through the travel provider (ex: flight protection insurance when you're purchasing your airline tickets). While these may be sufficient for some customers, we look for companies offering a more comprehensive range of services.

According to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association, the average cost of travel insurance will be between 4% and 8% of total travel expenses. Anything beyond that price point should include additional benefits beyond the standard inclusions, such as CFAR protection or upgraded medical coverage. Anything below that 4% threshold may leave you lacking important or sufficient coverage in an emergency.

Convenience and Flexibility

Whether you're an infrequent traveler or a suitcase warrior, a good travel insurance company should have you covered. In many cases, you might not even have to talk to a person in order to purchase your policy.

Many people think of travel insurance in context with specific trips, but most of these top contenders sell both single-trip and multi-trip policies, also known as annual travel insurance. Some companies also offer plans specifically designed for cruisers, students abroad, and business travelers. (Read our guide to the best cruise travel insurance companies for more details.) Finally, all of these providers offer multiple options for getting the specific areas and amounts of coverage that you want.

Claims Handling

Most travelers never have a large claim. Premiums are low, and it provides peace of mind for the just in case situations. So they leave reviews based on their reduced stress levels. But what happens if you lose your luggage or have to stay a few extra days due to an unexpected accident? Will your insurance carrier cover your claim without all the hassle? We check real customer reviews to sort this out for you.

Ease of Use and Support

When purchasing, during your trip, and throughout the claims process, you may need extra support. Does the company have a 24/7 help line? Does it have an online or mobile system allowing you to self-manage? Essentially, what are the options when you need help? We look at the big picture to evaluate the average customer experience with each company.

You can read our full insurance rating methodology for even more details.

Best Travel Insurance FAQs

There isn't a one-size-fits-all solution for every traveler. Determine the benefits that are most important to you, like baggage delay coverage, medical coverage, and trip delay coverage, then look for a company with solid customer ratings, especially when it comes to processing claims.

Travel insurance will pay out if you experience a covered event, such as a travel delay or delayed or lost baggage. If you're looking to get travel insurance for a specific reason, such as needing to potentially cancel your trip due to work reasons, make sure your policy will cover you in that situation before purchasing it. You should also check customer reviews to see other travelers' claims experiences, as it varies wildly from company to company.

The average cost of travel insurance is 4% to 8% of your total trip cost, so it could vary widely depending on where you're traveling and the length of your trip. Your age, the number of people in your group, and other factors can also influence how much you'll pay.

Most comprehensive travel insurance policies include travel medical coverage that can come in handy if an emergency occurs and you need medical evacuation. Some travel insurance plans offer more specialized coverage for travelers with pre-existing conditions , so shop around if medical coverage is a top priority for you.

$100,000 should be a sufficient medical coverage limit for travel insurance. If you're planning on doing extreme sports or anything particularly risky on your trip, you may want to increase your coverage level. A high medical coverage limit is especially useful when you're purchasing cruise travel insurance, since medical evacuations are more involved at sea.
