With a focus on Central America and the  top 10  resorts in the region, Costa Rica led the pack of winners for the best resorts in Central America, securing half the spots on this year’s list. However Belize was right behind, with four hotels earning high marks from T+L readers. Interestingly, each of the four is located in a completely different part of the country, demonstrating that travelers have broadened their explorations of the beautiful nation.  Two were located in the Mountain Pine Ridge Area in the Cayo District, one in Punta Gorda in the south of Belize with one property on the beautiful island of Ambergris Caye.  From this mix it can be seen that while the beach stays  are certainly beloved, it was the jungle properties that dominated this year’s list of reader favorites with 3 of the 4 winners in Belize being jungle lodges.

Here are the Belize hotels winners.

Blancaneaux Lodge Score: 94.15

In the early 1980s, Francis Ford Coppola visited Belize, and immediately fell in love with the location. Today the lodge is a 20-room luxury hideaway. Here, waterfalls tumble into turquoise pools above the jungle canopy. Its remote mountain setting allows guests to explore the ancient civilization of the Maya and to return to their own thatched roof dwelling, rich with Guatemalan décor and nestled in the foliage of the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve.

Copal Tree Lodge Score: 93.82

best hotel belize travel and leisure

The definition of agritourism-chic: Copal Tree is a Jungle Lodge, organic farm, and a 12,000 acre nature reserve. The lodge is set in the verdant hills of southern Belize. It offers some of the best in local food and culture, active adventures, wildlife viewing, saltwater fly fishing, and world-class hospitality. There are two swimming pools, a spa, a farm-to-table restaurant, a rum distillery, organic coffee and sugar farms, and so much more to discover here.

GAIA Riverlodge  – Score: 96.25

Perched atop of the magnificent Five-Sisters Waterfalls in Belize’s famed Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, Gaïa will fulfill its promise to reconnect you to your adventurous and truest being by disconnecting you from everything else. The second you set foot on the property a weight lifts. The quiet of the rainforest, its birds and butterflies, magnificent flora, the pink and orange sunsets glowing upon the pine trees, and finally, the distant roaring of the waterfall will work their magic.

Matachica Resort & Spa  – Score: 95.76

best hotel belize travel and leisure

Steps away from the sea and the world’s second-largest barrier reef, Matachica’s serene and technology-free property allows guests to disconnect in order to reconnect. The beachfront casitas, relaxed atmosphere, elegant design, and adults-only property merge to create a truly authentic, restorative getaway.

Horseback Riding In Xunantunich, Cayo, Belize

Ka’ana Boutique Resort & Spa, Cayo District, San Ignacio

There’s a lot to love about this posh outpost in western part of the country—and one of the best hotels in Belize—from the minimalist-modern villas with their private plunge pools to its lush garden walkways and two-acre organic garden, which provides ingredients for the restaurant’s seasonal menu. In the main hacienda, five sunny suites (some come with hammocks) are perfect for catching some much-needed R&R after a day of exploring the Mayan archeological sites just a short distance away.

Hamanasi Adventure & Dive Resort, Southern Coast

This secluded beachfront resort spans 30-acres and is ideal for adventure-seekers, thanks to its location near pristine reefs and Mayan ruins. The treehouse-style rooms high in the jungle canopy were made for birdwatching, the private beach is never crowded, and frequent performances by a troupe of Garifuna drummers and dancers bring in a high-energy dose of cultural nightlife. At the center of it all: a plantation-style home that serves as the resort's social hub thanks to its lively seafood restaurant, convivial bar, and scenic veranda overlooking the surf.

Pool Outside Of Itz'Ana Resort And Residences In Belize

Itz’ana Belize Resort & Residences, Placencia, Caribbean Coast

The soon-to-open Itz’ana Resort in Placencia offers the best of the Caribbean. Its sea-to-table restaurant features local line-caught fish and organic Belizean cuisine. The bar is stocked with the region's best golden rums, all hand-picked by the resident “rum sommelier." Even the library is inspired by Hemingway, who spent time in the Caribbean in the 30s. There's also a full-service marina from which to explore Belize’s turquoise waters and nearby reef system—the second largest in the world.

Pool At Naia Resort And Spa In Placencia, Belize

Naïa Resort and Spa, Placencia, Caribbean Coast

Use this 19-acre hideaway as a basecamp for exploring the Placencia Peninsula (known for its art galleries and fish markets) as well as indulging in Belizean wellness. Framed by palm trees and mangroves, its 35 relaxed beach houses, treetop villas, and residences offer varying perspectives: verandas that open directly onto the beach, tropical birds singing from the tree canopies, or soothing interiors with cathedral ceilings and pops of vibrant Caribbean artwork. There's a yoga studio and fitness center, but be sure not to miss the spa, whose treatment rooms are scattered across a clutch of tiny islands.

Bedroom At Hickatee Cottages In Southern Belize

Hickatee Cottages, Toledo District, Southern Coast

You'll find this family-run boutique tucked away down a dirt road at the bottom of Belize’s rural Toledo District. A cluster of shaded jungalows , bordered on all sides by a lush forest home to howler monkeys and dozens of species of birds, are ideal for nature-lovers and those looking to enjoy private, home-cooked meals that spotlight produce from the hotel garden. Hickatee is remote, but in a good way, and the owners keep the local culture alive with activities like drumming lessons and tours of the nearby butterfly farm.

Matachica Beach Resort In Ambergris Caye, Belize

Matachica Beach Resort, Ambergris Caye

A short water taxi ride from the coastal village of San Pedro leads you to Ambergris Caye Island and the eye-popping Matachica Beach Resort. The 31 thatched-roof villas are as brightly-colored as tropical fish and done up with traditional Central American accents and modern flourishes, each with private terrace. After a day of windsurfing or sea kayaking, curl up with a good book in a crocheted hammock on the pristine white-sand beach. Or if you're still feeling adventurous, go snorkeling in the nearby Hol Chan Marine Reserve. JS Tip: We highly recommend a day trip to the tiny, laid-back island of Caye Caulker.

Bedroom At El Secreto In Belize

El Secreto Hotel

Talk about seclusion: this romantic hotel , in a hidden cove miles up the coast from San Pedro, is reachable only by boat. Here, 13 cozy thatched-roof villas line Belize’s Instagram-perfect Ambergris Caye; all come with marble bathrooms, tandem bathtubs, and Egyptian cotton sheets. If you're hoping to up the romance quotient, splurge on the Spa Villa, whose plunge pool overlooks the Caribbean. When lazing in one of the resort’s hammocks starts to bore you (impossible!), the Barrier Reef is just a five-minute boat ride away.

Sharing is caring!

When it comes to finding the best Belize luxury hotels it can be quite challenging if you are not sure which island you want to make your home base while exploring Belize.

From luxury hotels in Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker to the hidden gem of Tobacco Caye, Belize offers some of the most stunning scenery and luxurious accommodations you could imagine.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing getaway or an adventure-filled vacation, Belize has something for everyone.

Belize is nestled in Central America next to Mexico and Guatemala and is a relatively tiny country but what it lacks in size is overcompensated in beauty, rainforests , and national parks, and its sparkling clear Caribbean waters lure visitors from all over the world, especially North America

There are more than 200 islands off  Belize’s Caribbean coastline, ranging from uninhabited mangroves to postcard-perfect beaches that accommodate both families and couples alike.

English is the official language, making it a top destination for tourists to escape to for either a short weekend trip, a  couples getaway , or even to celebrate your honeymoon.

With stunning beaches, some of the Caribbean’s best snorkeling (Belize is home to the world’s second-largest reef ), and easy direct flights from the U.S., Belize is now a top bucket list destination.

From jungle cottages, romantic beachfront villas, ocean views, and tree houses in the rainforest canopy—there’s no shortage of standout resorts and hotels in Belize.

If you’re planning a trip to Belize and looking for the ultimate luxury experience, here are some of the best luxury hotels in the country, and what you will not see on this list are some of the well-known brands like Francis Ford Coppola .

Where to stay in Belize

Which Island should you make your home base when visiting Belize

Belize also boasts over 130 islands along its 322 km coastline and let’s face it; who doesn’t like a day at the beach?

Belize’s most high-profile island,  Ambergris Caye , is the place to go if your idea of Nirvana is a mix of beach, snorkel, and scuba time with cruising the island’s happening bars, bistros and boutiques.

See and be seen on Belize’s largest island and if the vibe feels right, you’ll know you’ve found your island.

Picturesque is the word used often to describe  Caye Caulker , the laid-back island that’s a favorite of folks on a budget who love to dive and snorkel but aren’t necessarily in the country to party until the sun comes up.

There are no cars here. Just golf carts, bikes, and affordable and inclusive packages . Sound like your ideal respite?

Tobacco Caye  offers world-class diving and snorkeling off this sleepy island. The island also hosts a turtle-nesting beach, keep tabs on your feet when you walk around!

So here are some of my favorite luxury hotels in Belize that have kept me returning year after year.

The Best Beaches In Belize

Most people visit Belize because of the beautiful Beaches.  Belize has golden and white-sand beaches that are a boat or plane ride away from Belize City.

Many of these beaches remain a well-kept secret, discovered only by dive enthusiasts and anglers who venture off the beaten track.

Now that you know where to stay in Belize here are my recommendations for the best beaches to visit in South America.

1. Hopkins Village Beach

Hopkins Village Beach is located in the eastern Garífuna village of Hopkins, a mere 40-minute drive south of the town of Dangriga.

2. Half Moon Caye

Prepare to gasp at the paradisiacal views of Caribbean waters and a crescent-shaped beach made up of magnificent white sand, dotted with coconut palms.

Half Moon Caye’s no-frills, untouched beach is also a protected turtle-nesting site. The other half of the Caye is made up of a littoral forest, home to a protected red-footed booby sanctuary.

3. Ambergris Caye

You’ll be disappointed if you look for the perfect beach right in San Pedro Town. In Ambergris Caye, there is plenty of sand to lie on, but seagrass populates the shores due to a magnificent barrier reef just a half-mile away. South or north of the island is the best, most isolated stretch on la Isla Bonita .

4. South Water Caye

Located 14 miles from Dangriga’s coast, South Water Caye’s sand is soft, soothing, and powdery white. Visitors can find this perfect stretch of beach beside Pelican Beach Resort, dotted by a maze of coconut trees and hammocks.

Things To Do In Belize

Swimmers, snorkelers, and scuba divers will discover paradisiacal spots along the barrier reef like Hol Chan Marine Reserve and the Great Blue Hole.

Wildlife-seekers will marvel at Belize’s magnificent jaguars, pumas, howler monkeys, parakeets, and keel-billed toucans at the Belize Zoo.

Culture hounds will reach new heights by exploring impressive Mayan archeological sites like Corozal, Altun Ha, and Lamanai.

With so much to do, it can be difficult to decide where to begin in Belize. But the logical first step is to grab your bathing suit and savor a tropical papaya or star fruit along the beach.

My husband and I chose to explore the Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich, Cave Tubing, and The Blue Hole National Park and ventured off to Placencia for the annual Placencia Lobster Festival.

I suggest hiring a driver as we did and you will have your own personal driver for the week as your guide for all of our excursions and I will say it was well worth the money.

If you don’t have the funds to hire a personal driver I also suggest renting a car which is relatively easy in Belize.

1. Mayan Ruins In Belize

Maya Ruins is one of the main Belize attractions and makes the country stand out from other destinations that have overcrowded beaches, franchised hotels, and fast food joints on every corner.

The area was once the very center of the ancient Maya Civilization and they have left their mark in one of the largest concentrations of temples and underground ritual chambers.

The archeological site offers guests a magnificent repository of art in gold, jade, obsidian, pottery, elaborate stone carvings, and paintings.

This vast civilization that reached its apex when Europe was in the Dark Ages virtually disappeared about a thousand years ago.

Their descendants remain in the indigenous Maya consisting of various sub-ethnic groups including the Yucatec, the Mopan, the Ketchi, and the Xol.

Some of the best-known Maya sites include Xunantunich , Caracol, Altun Ha, and Lubaantun.

2. Hiking In The Belizean Jungle

Taking a hike or mountain bike tour is a great way to have fun, and get a little exercise after eating all of the delicious food while learning more about Belize.

Most Belize resorts have nature trails, guided or self-guided.

On these trails, you can hike along well-defined paths that include signs and you will get to see various plants and trees and even some will have medicinal use.

One such area is the  Don Elijio National Park named after noted Maya Shaman Elijio Panti.

Other resorts have scientific and nature conservation points of interest such as butterfly or iguana breeding programs and nature trails that outline these programs. You will also see howler monkeys , and tropical birds while experiencing local culture .

3. Zip Line in the Belizean Jungle

The longest zip line in Central America is 2,300 feet long and is located at the Mayflower Bocawina National Forest near Silk Grass Village on the Southern Highway in Belize.

Nestled amidst 7,000 acres of pristine lowland broadleaf forest in the saw-toothed Maya Mountains, this adventure center offers day and nighttime zip-lining , waterfall rappelling, and hiking.

The 1.5 miles of zip lines stretch across 12 platforms, starting with short easy zips that get progressively longer, faster, and steeper.

The final one is the longest, lasting over 30 seconds.  Make sure to keep an eye out for waterfalls along the way.

4. Caving in Belize

Belize offers exceptional, safe cave adventures for all levels of visitors. A trained tour guide will accompany you. Barton’s Cave, in the Cayo, is a popular canoe cave tour.

You’ll float—in an inner tube—through a cave while passing through the Mayan underworld.

For the truly adventurous, and fit, there’s the unforgettable ATV cave tour.  The weather is pleasant, and the food is tasty and delicious.

Belize may not be the cheapest Central American destination, but it’s one of the easiest and most relaxing places to travel in the region.

5. The Other Blue Hole

While many people know about the Great Blue Hole, Belize has another, lesser-known Blue Hole great blue hole. This is an inland sinkhole located 12 miles south of the  City Of Belmopan   in the very center of the country.

Yes, it is locally known simply as the Blue Hole. Its location right on the Hummingbird Highway makes this natural swimming pool an attraction for locals and tourists.

The inland Blue Hole is within the St. Herman’s Cave system and is administered as a national park.

The Blue Hole is accessible by a short flight of stairs that take you down approximately 30 feet into the very cool freshwater pool.

6. Belize Lobsterfest

Lobster season in Belize opens on June 15 and closes on February 15 and located in the Placencia Village .

There is so much lobster available during the summer that prices are at their lowest which means you can have lobster in every way imaginable.

The various Lobsterfest events are Belize’s way of celebrating the opening of the lobster season which makes this the best time to travel to Belize.

The Lobsterfest is held in four parts of the country, Belize City,  Caye Caulker, San Pedro, and Placencia.  You can eat as much lobster as your heart desires for three days each weekend.

You can have lobster on the grill, lobster thermidor, lobster ceviche, lobster kebabs, lobster chowder, and even lobster nachos!

How to get to Belize

If you’re ready to escape to the tropical paradise of Belize, you may be wondering how to get there. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

The first step is to fly into Belize City, which is the main gateway to the country. There are several major airlines that offer direct flights to Belize City from major cities in the United States and other international destinations. Once you arrive in Belize City, you have a couple of options to reach Tobacco Caye.

You can take a short domestic flight to any of the islands or by boat.

Another option is to take a local bus or taxi to one of the coastal towns and from there catch a boat to your final destination.

The boat ride typically takes around 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the weather conditions.

So pack your bags, book your flights, and get ready to experience the untouched beauty of Belize.

How to stay safe in Belize

When traveling to Belize, it’s important to prioritize your safety and well-being. Here are some tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip to this tropical paradise.

1. Research and plan: Before your trip, familiarize yourself with the local customs, laws, and any potential risks. Research the areas you plan to visit and take note of any safety precautions or travel advisories.

2. Secure your belongings : Keep your valuables, such as passports, cash, and electronics, in a safe place . Use a hotel safe or lockbox to store your items when you’re not using them. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or flashing large sums of money, as this can attract unwanted attention.

3. Stay aware of your surroundings : Whether you’re exploring the cities or relaxing on the beach, it’s important to stay alert and aware of your surroundings. Be cautious of your personal belongings, especially in crowded areas, and avoid walking alone at night.

4. Use reliable transportation: When traveling within Belize, choose reputable transportation options. Use licensed taxis or arrange transportation through your hotel. Avoid hitchhiking or accepting rides from strangers.

5. Be cautious with your drinks : If you choose to indulge in the local nightlife, be cautious with your drinks. Keep an eye on your beverage at all times and never accept drinks from strangers. It’s also advisable to drink responsibly and know your limits.

6. Respect the local culture: Show respect for the local culture and customs. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites and be mindful of your behavior in public places. Avoid engaging in illegal activities or participating in risky behavior.

7 . Stay informed: Keep up to date with local news and developments, especially if you’re traveling during times of political unrest or natural disasters. Register with your embassy or consulate and stay connected to reliable sources of information.

By following these safety tips and using common sense, you can enjoy a safe and memorable trip to Belize. Remember to take precautions, stay aware, and embrace the beauty and warmth of this incredible destination.

  • # 8 in Best Cheap Honeymoon Destinations for 2024

Although this small Central American nation spans less than 9,000 square miles – roughly the size of the state of Massachusetts – few places on Earth can match Belize's diverse natural beauty. The barrier reef's turquoise and coral hues contrast with the staggering Maya temples scattered throughout the country's lush rainforests. Plus, it's not just the landscape, the history, culture and people of Belize are just as blended.

Best Room At… St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort, Puerto Rico

This luxury hideaway offers exclusive access to both the jungle and the ocean.

a courtyard with potted plants

Our column "The Best Room At" offers a glimpse inside some of the most charming, luxurious, and iconic properties around the world.

What do you consider to be the best room on the property and why?

We have three residences under our inventory; one of them is a penthouse unit located on Ocean Drive, with four bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, and the main bedroom overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It just has an absolutely stunning view. Because it is a residential-style accommodation, it even has a bathtub with waterfront views. In addition to its floor-to-ceiling windows, the two-story residence has two kitchens—a main kitchen and an outdoor one on the rooftop—along with a swimming pool.

a room with a large window

How much does it cost?

It starts out at $9,995 per night, depending on seasonality and availability, with a two-night minimum length of stay.

How would you describe the general atmosphere and vibe of the hotel?

The hotel is located on a nature reserve that's 483 acres in size. It's very intimate. We have 139 rooms, a relatively small residential component, and two miles of dedicated beach. So you can be as social or as detached as you like.

What are the dining options in the hotel?

Paros Restaurant , open only for dinner, offers fine-dining Mediterranean cuisine, while Seagrapes Restaurant is more informal and open all day. Seagrapes is located right by the pool, so it's alfresco. You can also grab some bites at the St. Regis Bar, right off the main lobby in front of our beautiful mural. Near our golf course , we have the Beach Club restaurant, which focuses on Puerto Rican cuisine, and a lot of local ingredients go into its menu. In addition, we have a couple of pop-up concepts, which are at the Sand Dollar Beach Club. They open on the weekends, so they're all about the barbecue, particularly grilled lobster and fish.

What are the best things to do in the hotel?

Aside from the nature reserve, we're an Audubon Gold Signature Sanctuary and we have over five miles of jogging trails. And in addition to the ocean and the swimming pools available at the property, we have naturalized lakes where you can go kayaking, paddleboarding, and electronic hydrofoiling. We've got clay and hard tennis courts, pickleball courts, beach-tennis courts, bocce courts. So there are a lot of activities available for people to enjoy on the property.

We run an animal shelter at the property as well, where we rescue dogs and cats, and a lot of our hotel guests have adopted them.

a large green field with trees and buildings

What is the one thing about the hotel that you think first-time visitors will find surprising?

Visitors who have been to Puerto Rico before most likely know the metropolitan area of San Juan, and that is far from what this property is. We're just nine miles from the rainforest. Plus, you're oceanfront. I think that's what blows everybody away at first: the landscaping and the lusciousness of it all.

We're just nine miles from the rainforest. Plus, you're oceanfront. I think that's what blows everybody away at first: the landscaping and the lusciousness of it all.

What do you think sets St. Regis apart from its peers in the area?

Given our location, there's a lot of sustainability and a lot of conscientious planning taking place on our part, to make sure that we are mindful of the environment and everything that surrounds us. And St. Regis, as a rule, typically picks the best addresses in a destination to establish themselves, and this one's no different.

14 Best Hotels and Resorts in Costa Rica

These are the best hotels in Costa Rica for every type of traveler.

Lindsay Cohn is a writer, editor, and avid traveler who has visited 45 countries across six continents — and counting. She contributes to Travel + Leisure, Hotels Above Par, InsideHook, Well+Good, The Zoe Report, and more.

best hotel belize travel and leisure

Arenas del Mar

Costa Rica — Travel + Leisure ’s Destination of the Year for 2024 —  is a biodiverse wonderland with rainforests, cloud forests, volcanoes, hot springs, sandy beaches along the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, and incredible wildlife (including three-toed sloths and white-faced capuchin monkeys).

A hub of ecotourism, the best things to do in Costa Rica range from cloud forest hikes and chocolate farm tours to surfing and yoga. Sure, you could fill a trip with myriad activities, but it’s equally wonderful to kick back, relax, and soak in the chilled-out spirit. For these reasons and so many more, this peaceful Central American nation wedged between Nicaragua and Panama stands out as a top vacation destination and one of my all-time favorite countries to visit. (We even spent an entire month in the beach town of Santa Teresa to celebrate my son’s first birthday .)

When it comes to accommodations, the hotel scene is as diverse as the terrain and varied attractions themselves. There are beautiful beach resorts that put guests steps from the waves, luxury tented camps, more rustic eco-lodges surrounded by prolific jungles, and five-star stays focused on wellness. Budget travelers will also find cool hostels with excellent Wi-Fi that allow digital nomads to work and play the pura vida way.

To help pick the perfect home base to make your tropical vacation dreams come true, we’ve rounded up the 14 best hotels in Costa Rica according to readers, travelers, and experts.

Even with rugged terrain and opportunities for outdoor recreation at every turn, the experience of staying at this planet-positive property and 2023 World's Best Awards winner isn’t as rugged as one might think. Rio Celeste Hideaway Hotel

Hideaway Rio Celeste

Also available to book at Tripadvisor.com

It’s the only luxury hotel on the Rio Celeste.

You’re packing for the rainforest, so bring a waterproof jacket, sturdy boots, and insect repellent.

A World's Best Awards winner in 2023, Rio Celeste Hideaway Hotel earns top billing for its location on an 80-acre rainforest reserve in the foothills of northern Costa Rica’s Tenorio Volcano National Park. Past guests rave about the wildlife encounters, scenic trails, exclusive swimming access, and wild spirit. Light-filled casitas look out over the gardens or rainforest. While lounging by the pool or relishing a massage at the spa, there’s a real sense that you’re a million miles away from the realities of the daily grind. Despite its off-the-grid atmosphere, the property does have Wi-Fi if you need to check on things back home (though disconnecting is obviously encouraged and honestly pretty easy to do in such a stunning environment).

  • Accommodations: Breakfast, wireless internet, and access to the gym included; private river access
  • Location: Located in Rio Celeste, Costa Rica
  • Nearby Attractions: Sits within the heart of the Tenorio Volcano National Park

Hotel Nantipa

Also available to book at TripAdvisor.com

It’s a boutique oasis in the chill beach town of Santa Teresa.

High season (December through April) books up quickly.

Located in Santa Teresa , a low-key beach town on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula , one of the world's Blue Zones, Hotel Nantipa channels laid-back vibes in a design-forward way that still speaks to the untamed nature of the region. Sheltered by foliage-frame pebbled paths, standalone bungalows flaunt breezy decor and indoor/outdoor showers. Our favorite feature? The private terraces with hammocks and plunge pools. While the fully stocked beachfront villas are perfect for multigenerational families and larger groups. There’s also a lovely main pool and an intimate spa sanctuary. Manzu Restaurant occupies a prime spot right on the sand. It’s a splendid setting to eat fresh sea bass ceviche, sip on a pineapple margarita, and watch the sunset.

So, if you’re a fan of swimming in the ocean, building sandcastles, and lounging under a shaded umbrella, it’s the best option. Further distinguishing itself from other properties in the area, it has luxury suites with sweeping views and plush king-size beds that helped earn it a coveted spot on T+L’s World's Best Awards list in 2023. The property also brings guests close to incredible wildlife with the chance to spot red-eyed tree frogs on nocturnal walks with in-house naturalists and go on daytime excursions to the biodiverse Barú National Wildlife Refuge.

  • Nearby Attractions: Sits within an 11-acre private nature reserve and connects to Manuel Antonio National Park

Pacuare Lodge

There are no roads leading to Pacuare Lodge; most guests arrive via the Pacuare River.

Pacuare Lodge makes eco-tourism dreams come true, starting with the adrenaline-pumping approach. Most guests arrive at the far-flung refuge by rafting in on one of the world’s most beautiful white-water rivers. The thrills continue with ziplining through the forest canopy and canyoning. A scenic backdrop for adventure or relaxation, the intimate property marries an untamed landscape and indigenous Cabécar-inspired architecture. When it’s time to kick back, gardens and secluded suites with large terraces and private spring-fed pools await. Alternatively, a trip to Jawa Juü Spa or downward dog by the river is a great way to reset. True to its low-impact quintessence, the culinary program takes a farm-to-table approach emphasizing fresh, local ingredients.

  • Accommodations : Meals, non-alcoholic drinks, transportation, select on-site experiences, and electric golf carts to get around included

Finca Rosa Blanca

Piotr Bratosiewicz / Finca Rosa

The signature shade-grown organic coffee tour includes a cupping experience.

It is close to the capital but far from the beach (about two hours).

Situated in the highlands above the capital of San Jose, Finca Rosa Blanca blends hospitality and agriculture. A 14-key inn and sustainable coffee farm, the property is the perfect place to sip home-grown java while admiring the majesty of volcanoes and tropical forests. Not surprisingly, given the quality of the crops, the gourmet offerings are a standout across the board. The cuisine celebrates the region's culinary traditions while introducing creative twists that excite the palate. In addition to touring the shade-grown coffee plantation and tantalizing their tastebuds, guests have the opportunity to swim in the infinity pool, do yoga, go on excursions with in-house naturalist guides, bliss out at the wellness center, and snooze in character-filled suites featuring comfy beds, jacuzzi tubs, private verandas, and hand-crafted artwork.

Besides its spellbinding nature, it has plenty of design credentials courtesy of individually designed one- and two-bedroom bungalows and themed suites appointed with local art and handcrafted decor. At this easy-going boutique oasis in Puerto Viejo, guests can also look forward to experiencing Afro-Caribbean culture. Love aquatic adventures? Know Before You Go

Decide what kind of trip you want..

What’s so amazing about visiting Costa Rica is that you can tailor a vacation to your interests. Do you prefer to hang by the pool or spend days riding waves and building sand castles? Are rugged rainforest adventures a must, or would you like more spa time? Are you traveling with kids? (Some properties have age minimums, so that’s something to consider.)

Be honest about how much you’re willing to “rough it."

Costa Rica is a bastion of untamed natural beauty. And while it's tempting to go all in on a remote lodge, that might not be the best fit for every traveler. Before settling on a hotel, ask yourself: Do I need Wi-Fi? Is air conditioning a must? Am I OK with a long drive on windy roads?

Consider seasonality.

Because of Costa Rica’s topography and varied terrain, certain times of the year bring swings in weather to different parts of the country. Looking into this ahead of booking will help you to avoid the rainy season in the rainforest or skip the peak period by the beach.

Be mindful of budget.

Accommodations in Costa Rica run the gamut from backpacker-friendly hostels to five-star resorts. Some luxury hotels cost upwards of $1,500 a night. But you certainly don’t need to spend that much for a five-star stay. Whatever your budget, it’s possible to find a fabulous overnight.
