Cycling Tours & Holidays

  • Ways to travel

No big bus windows. No phone screen. No maps, walls or guidebooks. Just your wheels, the wind and the open road. That’s how we roll.

From pedalling through peaceful villages in Vietnam and Japan to cruising down epic, ever-changing landscapes in Jordan and Tanzania , our cycling tours allow you to really immerse yourself in a place, and not just travel through it. Powered by nothing but your legs (and maybe a slice of biscotti and a couple of extra-strong cafés au lait), there’s a nice simplicity to cycling as well as plenty of adventures waiting for you off the saddle. Intrepid style cycling isn’t the Tour de France – you don’t get prizes for coming first and the lycra bodysuits are definitely optional – but we promise it’s a totally unique way to experience the world.

Why choose Intrepid for your cycling holiday

A bike in front of a mountain

The bikes we use

On most of our trips we use hardtail mountain bikes armed with front suspension. Depending on the country, we’ll use a mix of makes and models like Giant Talon and Trek X Caliber 5, but they’re pretty similar when it comes to form and function. Our bikes are serviced regularly by local experts who know their stuff, and any pesky broken chains or flat tyres can be fixed in a jiffy. You can usually bring your own bike, too (check our FAQs for the logistical info).

Responsible cycling tours

Responsible travel

Riding a bike is good for you (even factoring in the odd gelato or Tuscan cellar door pitstop). But it’s also good for the environment. Like all our trips, our cycling tours are 100% carbon offset. Most of the transport is powered by the greenest energy of all: yours. We’ve been certified as the world’s largest travel B Corp, which means when you choose Intrepid, you’re travelling to improve the planet. Learn more about Responsible Travel with Intrepid.

Giving back to the communities where you travel

How we give back

There’s something special about Intrepid travellers. You travel differently; you travel with purpose; you seek to leave a positive impact and give back to the people and places you visit. By travelling on an Intrepid cycling trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation cycling partner, World Bicycle Relief . Donations provide school children, health workers and farmers in rural low-income communities with durable bicycles, research and mechanics training.

A safety-first approach to cycling

Safety first

We run risk assessments on all our cycling trips and our leaders are specially trained to run cycling adventures, so you can rest assured you’re well taken care of. Our leaders are also trained in basic first aid, and we’ve got a support vehicle that follows the group in case of injury, inclement weather, unexpected and hazardous road conditions, or if you’d like to give your legs a rest.

Three figures representing small group travel

Small groups

The beauty of small group travel means our groups are small enough to allow you to ride at your own pace, but big enough to connect with others and create a good social vibe. Our maximum group size is 12 people, which we’ve found is a great number to let you get to know your fellow cyclists and also benefit from your leader’s knowledge and experience.

A local tour leader

Local leaders

We think the best folks to show you around the heart of a destination is someone who lives there. That's why we work exclusively with local cycling leaders, which means you’ll really get to know the places you’ll be visiting. Our leaders are not just cycling enthusiasts, they’re also your travel guru, teacher and enthusiastic purveyor of local experiences.

Cycling holiday FAQs

What’s the range of cycling tours available.

Our cycling tours span the gamut of two-wheeled challenges: from a leisurely ride through Vietnam to cycling across landscapes of Cuba. Some of these trips include cycling as just one of a number of active adventures, others are more cycling focussed (ie. You’ll be riding almost every day).

Should I bring my own bike on a cycling trip?

How do i fly with my bike.

All airlines will have their own rules and fees when transporting bikes. Make sure you contact the airline (preferably) before you pay for your flights to see what charges and requirements they have.

Before you depart, you must box your bike for transport. See our section ‘taking your own bike vs. hiring one’ for more information.

What do I have to carry while we ride?

On all of our cycling tours your accommodation is pre-booked and your luggage is transferred from one point to the next. All you have to carry is water, any snacks or gadgets you may want and a few layers to keep you dry and warm. A small, lightweight backpack may come in handy.

Do I need to pack anything special?

Helmets are compulsory on our cycling tours, so you can either bring your own or (to save on luggage space) buy one at a local bike shop once you arrive in-country. We also recommend you bring your own water bottle/hydration pack, and closed shoes. You may also wish to bring Cycling shorts, and (if you ride regularly at home) your own saddle and pedals. Many of our clients who do not ride regularly find a gel seat cover helpful in making the ride more comfortable. For more info on packing, check out the What to Pack section of your Essential Trip Information.

How fit do I need to be to do a cycling tour?

All you need to enjoy our cycling trips is the ability to ride a bicycle and a passion for seeing a destination on two wheels. That’s about it.

While there are occasionally longer days on some itineraries, the vast majority of our cycling days are between 30-60kms and are done at a leisurely pace with plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery or just take a break. Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness will get by with no trouble. Be sure to check the physical rating and description in the Essential Trip Information to make sure the trip suits your fitness level and skills.

Our cycling trips are done predominantly on sealed roads (with the odd unsealed section), but none of the trips require any specialist cycling skills. We’ve also researched extra riding routes in each of the destinations we visit, so if you want to stretch your legs a bit more, you can.

My partner is fitter than me, should I still book this trip?

To make our trips more accessible for cyclists of varying fitness levels and skills, most of our trips will have a support vehicle that follows the group. You can jump into the support vehicle any time you feel like taking a short (or long) break from riding. Many of our cycling trips also include the option to use an e-bike, an electric motor-assisted bike that’ll get you up any hill or allow you to zip along the flats with minimum effort.

What sort of safety precautions do you take?

We run risk assessments on each and every one of our cycling trips to make sure they’re up to scratch, and your cycling leaders have personally ridden every inch of the itinerary in advance. We’ve assessed the road conditions, the level of traffic and any potential blackspots. Our leaders are trained in cycling health and safety, as well as basic first aid, and we usually have a vehicle following us if an evacuation ever becomes necessary. We’ve also made sure our cycling tours depart during the milder months when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold, so the ride should be as pleasant (and safe) as possible.

Do I need special insurance for a cycling trip?

Not as a rule. Any injuries you might suffer while riding should be covered by the more reputable comprehensive policies (we can recommend some good brands if you’re unsure of what to get). It’s always important to double-check the fine print before departing on your trip and be aware that, like all Intrepid trips, travel insurance is compulsory on our cycling itineraries.

Cycling tour reviews

Our favourite cycling destinations.

A cyclist riding off-road along the coast in Croatia

With little olive groves and hilltop villages on Brac, Korcula’s cliff-top switchbacks and charming local vineyards and nights spent refuelling with fresh seafood plucked straight from the Adriatic, it's like the Croatian islands were built for cycling trips. Get ready for a blur of orange orchards, white pebble beaches and sparkling water to cool off and buckets of tangy gelato, Dalmatian-style.

A cyclist riding past the Pont du Gard in France

Don’t worry, we won’t be leading you on any mountain climbs up to the Alpe d’Huez. French cycling for us is more about slipping into the relaxed rhythm of Provencal life. Stop for a picnic with the group by the Gardon River, browse for antiques in Uzes or Tarascon, and ride along quiet country lanes outside Caderousse. It’s tough work, but someone’s gotta do it.

A group of cyclists riding through a local village in Vietnam

Join us as we get active and cycle from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. From the tranquil waterways of Mai Chau and peaceful rice paddy roads of Ninh Binh, to the pretty pagodas and colourful lanterns in Hoi An, this mesmerising country is even more beautiful from handlebar height. We promise there'll be piping hot phở and crusty banh mi waiting for you at each stop.

Cyclists stopping by a spice market in Marrakech

It’s not what you’d call a ‘classic’ cycling destination, but there’s no doubt Morocco is an up-and-comer in the world of two-wheeled adventures. Where else can you cycle silhouetted against the dunes of the Sahara? Swap your bike for a camel? Or spend the night with Berber tribesmen in your very own desert camp? Yep, this isn’t your typical cycling tour.

A beautiful clifftop village in Tuscany

A cycling trip in Tuscany? Just form an orderly queue. We’ll start on the cobbled lanes of Florence and work our way (in no particular hurry) through the rolling hills of Garfagnana and Barga’s sun-dappled vineyards and olive groves, and then onto the famed towns of Lucca and Pisa. If all that sounds like some Italian black and white movie starring a guy with a moustache, it’s because it is.

A colourful street in Havana

Cuba ticks all the culture boxes. Cadillacs, cigars and nostalgia-soaked streets? Um, yes please. But it’s also a rider’s paradise: mostly flat, relatively compact, with a big variety of landscapes. Think dizzyingly colourful stress in Havana, rural villages around Vinales, the pristine beaches of Cayo Jutias and the stunning forests of Las Terrazas. Muy bueno .

Meet our cycling leaders

Our local leaders are all cycling junkies, but they go through some pretty rigorous training before being allowed behind the handlebars of an Intrepid cycling tour. Each leader has undergone on-road supervision and knows how to do safety checks, basic repairs and emergency first-aid. But they’re still regular Intrepid leaders, which means they know the best local bars, cafes and hidden spots (not to mention handling all the logistical stuff). You just focus on the ride.

A local leader for Intrepid cycling tours

One of my favourite trips is Cycle Tuscany . We ride from the Apuan Alps down to the coast, followed by a dip in the Mediterranean and a picnic of fresh focaccia and tomatoes. We continue through rural villages, protected wildlife parks and sandy beaches all the way to the medieval jewel of the walled city of Lucca – and that's just in one day. My top tip for an Intrepid cycling trip? Bring patience, an open heart and an open mind. Oh, and trust your legs!

9 Best cities in Europe to explore by bike

9 Best cities in Europe to explore by bike

As a Dutchie, I was able to ride a bike at a very young age. With over 35.000 km of dedicated biking lanes, us Dutchies move around on our bicycles. No wonder we love to bike around town and try to find other cities in Europe to explore by bike. I found cycling around a big city the best way to explore a town and it will save you from blisters from walking around too much.

My list with 9 best cities in Europe to explore by bike

But which are the best cities in Europe to explore by bike? I give you a list of the best European cities paved to explore by bike.

As I have not traveled everywhere in Europe, I had some help to make this list with the best cities in Europe to explore by bike from fellow travel bloggers .

Are you ready? Strap on that helmet and pedal along with me.

I paid for everything in full myself. I was not paid or sponsored. All my opinions and experiences are my own.

Probe around the Globe does use affiliate links. If you decide to follow one of my links and make a purchase, I’ll earn a small commission. This is at no extra cost to you.

What are the best cities in Europe to explore by bike? I give you a list of my and other travel bloggers best European cities paved to explore by bike.

#1 Amsterdam, the Netherlands

What other city than Amsterdam is at the top of my list of best cities in Europe to explore by bike?

There are 800,000 bicycles in the capital of the Netherlands and you can easily explore the city by bike. Rent a bike or take one of the many biking tours to explore the city by bike.

Make sure to follow the right etiquette to blend right in with the locals. Check this funny instruction video on riding your bike as a tourist in Amsterdam.

Vicky from Vickeblueyes shares here experiences with cycling in Amsterdam:

Amsterdam is a mecca for cyclists; whether you are environmentally conscious, a fitness freak, or just enjoy getting around in the open air, the locals of Amsterdam use cycles as their main mode of transport with ease and delight.

Wandering around the picturesque alleyways and along the tranquil canals, bikes zip past you frantically, with the ping of a tiny bell to catch your attention. Although a stunning place to cycle and watch the world wander past, it is quite a stressful experience for the beginner biker.

Amsterdam has got a clear lane system in place but as the entirety of the city travel by bike, the correct etiquette can be quite challenging at times for a non-biker (aka car driver like me). Head over to Home Egels, otherwise known as the Yellow Bikes of Amsterdam where you can rent a bike easily and where the staff is keen to assist you and your journey, or if you would rather, join a bike tour with them.

Sights that are perfect to cycle to are Vondel Park, the area of Jordaan and the Anne Frank Museum.

What are the best cities in Europe to explore by bike? I give you a list of my and other travel bloggers best European cities paved to explore by bike.

#2 Valencia, Spain

When I was studying Spanish in Valencia, I needed to cover some ground from my host family to the language school and around town. I rented a bike often, because in Valencia they have the bike share system .

Valenbisi, the bike sharing system

It’s called Valenbisi and you can rent a bike at any place at any time for any amount of time. You sign up for the system and you can take a bike from the station. You cycle to your destination and park the bike again. If you do this within 30 minutes of taking the bike, it’s free . For more fees and terms of subscriptions, check the site of Valenbisi here .

I loved this system. I was able to bike to the beach or bike all the way to the Centre of Arts. In the middle of the city, there are paved bicycle paths that make for a leasure-some cycle tour. I did have some trouble finding a free station to park my bike. Sometimes all were full and I had to find another station to park the bike. Or wait for somebody to take a bike.

#3 Rome, Italy

After having explored the city on foot for 4 days, we wanted to have another perspective on the city. I took my parents on a guided tour across Rome by bike . We choose the panoramic hill tour . This was a bit hard, as we are not used to cycling up any hills but worth all the efforts.

I can recommend this tour as you really get a bird’s eye view of the city . You visit all the hills of Rome and some little secret sites and parks. I booked this tour via a Dutch agency, so I cannot recommend any others, but there are dozens out there.

Don’t make the same dumbass mistake I made: if you photograph while cycling, and taking a turn and squeezing your front break: you will fall. Ough! Have you ever thought of Rome to be one of the best cities in Europe to explore by bike?

What are the best cities in Europe to explore by bike? I give you a list of my and other travel bloggers best European cities paved to explore by bike.

Read more on how to explore Rome with my tips to maximize time and which churches to visit .

#4 Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is quite big and after walking around for a few days, my feet were killing me. I rented a bike for a day and set off to explore the outskirts of the city .

This was a good idea! Not only did my feet get some rest (finally!) but I was also able to visit some more remote places. I stumbled upon a local artisan market , a Catalan food fair and found some pristine beaches to chill.

What are the best cities in Europe to explore by bike? I give you a list of my and other travel bloggers best European cities paved to explore by bike.

You can rent bikes from the numerous bike shops around town, or when you become a Barcelona resident you can sign up for the bike-share system BiCing Barcelona. Of course, you can also take a bike tour of Barcelona. With its broad avenues and lanes next to its beaches, Barcelona is definitely one of the best cities in Europe to explore by bike.

For more things to do in Barcelona, check my post about hiking in Montserrat mountains , the lush Park Guell , and some major budget-saving tips for airport travel .

# 5 London, UK

London is another top favorite on the list of cities in Europe to explore by bike. Here’s what Vivian from Miss Happy Feet has to say about biking in London:

It is incredibly easy to rent a bike in London. There is no need to book ahead; docking stations are everywhere to be seen: just walk up to a station with your bank card and touch the screen! As easy as that!

I rented a bike (Santander Cycles) when I was in London and paid only 2 Pound for a whole day. Yes only 2 Pound, but I had to look for a docking station every 30 minutes. It wasn’t too bad because as I said, docking stations are everywhere. Kind reminder: it helps to plan accordingly prior to renting a bike! Maps with docking stations can be found on TfL website (Transport for London).

Where to cycle to in London?

Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park are pretty interesting to wander through with bikes, especially if you are a beginner in hiring city bikes. Another route with amazing view (my favorite) is in South Bank , which you can go up to the Westminster Bridge.

For regular bike users, I’d recommend downloading the Santander Cycle’s App on your smartphones to make things easier. We can access information on bikes available, location of docking stations and so on.

Portugal’s N2 cycle route: Q&A with Portugal A2Z

A2Z Portugal logo

If you’re looking for a long-distance cycle route steeped in history, culture and ancient tradition, it’s time to consider Portugal’s ‘Route 66’: the Portugal N2 cycle route.

National Road N2 offers some of the best road cycling in Portugal. It’s one of the most varied and best cycling routes in Europe. This 739-kilometre route traverses the length of the country, from its mountainous north in Trás-os-Montes, to the verdant valleys of the south in the Barrocal Algarve.

Portugal’s N2 road crosses four mountain ranges, 11 rivers, and 35 municipalities, with a menu of local gastronomical delights and world-famous wine to fuel your journey of rich Roman heritage.

Pedro Pedrosa, a keen cyclist and Portugal A2Z Walking and Biking  Co-Founder, has got in-depth knowledge about Portugal’s cycling routes. Here, he shares his tips for how to cycle the N2 road, and why this life-affirming journey is one to add to the bucket list.

1. Why cycle the N2 in Portugal?

Cycling the 739-kilometre N2 route is a unique way to discover the historic and diverse heartland of Portugal. It’s one of the only roads in the world that spans a whole country in its entirety. It runs through Portugal “end to end”, crossing the mountainous regions in the north and ends at the gorgeous beaches in the south.

Born from the foundations of ancient Roman Roads that once crossed the Iberian province of Lusitania, its ancient roots have earned it the title of the ‘most mythical road in the country’. It holds a treasure trove of history to unearth: Roman spas in Chaves, the 2,000 year old UNESCO World Heritage site of the Alto Douro Wine Region and Faro’s ancient city walls to name only a few.

Add to that, beautiful landscapes with countless panoramic views, big climbs and rewarding, sweeping descents, plus plenty of bike lanes on the way – it really is one of the best long distance bike rides in Europe!

2. Give us a feel for what each day on an N2 bike trip is like.

Cycling the N2 can take between 5-12 days, depending on the distance you’d like to cover each day, how much time you want to spend exploring and how challenging you want your experience to be.

There are many things to explore and no two days are the same as the landscape is constantly changing. You’ll pass through cities, ancient villages and small towns, over some of the country’s most important rivers and five mountain ranges (while passing alongside five others).

On top of that you cycle through many wine production regions and 18 Protected Areas and sites integrated in the Natura 2000 Network, including a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Douro Valley.

Here’s a flavour of what to expect on our seven day self-guided N2 cycle route with Portugal A2Z:

Day 1: Arrive in Chaves

Most guests arrive by airplane in the enchanting city of Porto, famous for its delicious fortified port wine. There’s then a transfer to Chaves. Guests usually spend the day discovering the thermal baths and Roman bridge of Trajan, fuelling up for tomorrow’s start.

Day 2: Cycling Chaves to Régua (90 kilometres)

Start your epic ride at the zero kilometre milestone, which is near the public park in Chaves.

Ride the mountain roads of the Trás-os-Montes region and into the stunning Douro Valley. This historic Alto Douro wine region is classed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, with over 2,000 years of history and twisted, contoured landscape.

In the city of Peso da Régua you can stop at the Douro Museum, before crossing the Douro River and conquering the Mezio summit at 1,000 metres of elevation.

Chaves castle on the N2 cycle route

Day 3: Cycling Régua to Tondela (108 kilometres)

Ride south to discover the historical towns of Lamego and Viseu, steeped in sacred art and religious architecture.

Stop at the cathedral and sample the delights of famous local sweets before leaving the vineyards behind and heading to Tondela, an ancient city in the Dão wine region. It would be rude not to sample the delicious wine as a reward for your efforts so far!

Day 4: Cycling Tondela to Pedrógão Pequeno (122 kilometres)

Follow the Mondego River and then enter the spectacular Lousā mountain range. Be rewarded with two of the hardest climbs along the N2, with panoramic mountain views and rich biodiversity.

Spot deer and wild boar before passing through Pedrógāo Grande to the great lake of the Cabril Dam, one of the biggest dams in the country.

Day 5: Cycling Pedrógão Pequeno to Montargil (130 kilometres)

Follow the Zêzere River to leave the northern and central mountains of Portugal behind and enter the flatter Alentejo landscapes.

Trace the route of the Tejo River to Montargil amongst tranquil countryside and whitewashed villages. You’ll also notice the beautiful cork trees become part of the scenery and will form an ever-present part of the landscape until the end of the N2 ride.

Serra de Monfurado on N2 cycle route Portugal

Day 6: Cycling Montargil to Odivelas (Alentejo) (122 kilometres)

After a few days of mountains and undulations, now enjoy the flattest section of the N2 route, with kilometres of inviting, straight roads and easier terrain ahead.

Pay a visit to discover the wartime history of Montemor-o-Novo, with its ancient castle and several historical monuments.

Day 7: Cycling Odivelas to Almodôvar (70 kilometres)

Ride endless tranquil roads, with owls, red kites, common buzzards and storks for company. After passing through the mining village of Aljustrel you’ll reach the gorgeous plains of Castro Verde, with its natural grasslands and endangered ancient bird species, including the Iberian Imperial Eagle.

Day 8: Cycling Almodôvar to Faro (80 kilometres)

Take in the ever-changing landscape en route to the Algarve, with mountains to challenge you for one last time.

Climb the Caldeirão range amongst signs of ancestral rural lifestyle. Pass the iconic mountain pass of Barranco do Velho and lap up the kilometres and kilometres of pure beauty, rich heritage and gastronomic delights as you sail into Faro and its historic marina.

3. What’s the best time of year to attempt Portugal’s end to end cycle ride?

Any time is a good time for the N2!

Winter is sunny and inviting in the south of Portugal, but you may encounter some rain in the north, particularly in the Tagus region.

In summer, temperatures in the north will be great but you’ll need to prepare yourself for the heat of the south!

Early autumn and spring, might be a good mid ground, but these days there’s no such thing as certainty when it comes to the weather. We suggest not worrying too much about finding “the perfect time” and just going for it!

4. How fit do you have to be to cycle the N2?

The total length of the N2 route is 739 kilometres, with some big mountain climbs in the north. A good level of fitness will make it much more enjoyable.

Whether you’re joining for one of our bike tours in Portugal, or doing a self guided trip, we always recommend physically preparing for the challenge beforehand so you can enjoy it to the fullest over a number of days or weeks.

On the N2, you’ll have to be able to endure some steep climbs, especially in the north, so our advice is to split your N2 experience by elevation gain instead of distance. Try to spend a few more days climbing in the north, then enjoy the flatter southern region as a reward.

We are always happy to tailor-make an itinerary for a customer, based on a 7 to 14 day trip. This allows customers to cycle lower distances each day and even cycle on hybrid bikes.

E-bikes are also a great option for those that are less fit. They’re an excellent way of allowing families to all cycle together and making cycling trips more accessible. We’re delighted to help with e-bike rental if this is something a customer is interested in.

5. What are the best cycling climbs of the N2?

The best cycling climbs of the N2 route in Portugal can be found in the mountain ranges of the north and central parts of the country.

The longest and one of the hardest cycling climbs of the N2 route (+900m) starts just after Peso da Régua, around 88 kilometres into the ride. It extends for around 30 kilometres until reaching the highest point of the entire route, at Bigorne.

The 48 kilometre section starting just after Penacova has some notable cycling climbs, namely from Góis to the intersection of the N112 road (15km).

Other big climbs include the 8 kilometre section that ends at the geodesic mark just outside Vila de Rei (also known as “the midpoint of the N2 route”) and the 17 kilometre section that begins as you reach the Algarve (the southernmost region of Portugal) and ends at the Caldeirão range viewpoint.

6. Where are the flatter areas along the N2?

The flatter areas are found in the Alentejo region, at around 415 kilometres into the ride at the village of Pont de Sor. The Alentejo is known for its lowlands and pleasant landscapes. After crossing the bridge over the Tejo/Tagus River, as you reach Ponte de Sor the flatter section of the N2 route starts and extends for more than 100 kilometres, until you reach Almodôvar, the last municipality in the Alentejo region crossed by the N2.

After Abrantes and up to Almodovar, the stages are very rolling and with shorter and easier climbs.

7. What’s your favourite part of the N2 cycling route – and why?

There are so many fascinating parts along this historic and beautiful road, it’s difficult to choose!

Douro Valley

One place that always stands out with riders is the Douro Valley, which we ride through on day two of our seven day N2 cycling tour .

The winding Douro River, the verdant slopes of its valley, with small villages and vineyards in the twisted contours of the Alto Douro Wine Region with its UNESCO World Heritage status, make it a really spectacular place to ride.

Plus, the delicious local cuisine in this region is one of the most important treasures, with all of the typical dishes made with locally cultivated products.

Greenway alongside the N2

Another favourite part of the N2 route is in the centre region, between Viseu and Santa Comba Dão (which also includes the district of Aveiro), where we can take the option to divert off the N2 and cycle on a stunning greenway built on disused railway lines.

The Ecopista do Dão is 49 kilometres long and runs along the banks of the River Dão before leaving the river to take in views of the mountains and neighbouring vineyards.

It is an easy ride as the greenway is flat with no climbs, and is completely traffic free, so you can sit back and enjoy the views.

Douro Valley in Portugal

8. What is there to see along the N2 route?

You’ll experience the diversity, history and cultural heritage of an entire country when riding Portugal’s N2 route.

Discover the thermal baths and Roman bridge of Trajan in Chaves,  the 2,000-year-old Douro Valley wine making region and its Museum, vineyards and fantastic food. There’s also the Cabril Dam in Pedrógão Grande, one of Portugal’s biggest dams,  gothic churches and ancient castles.

Wildlife enthusiasts will also appreciate the chance to see endangered wildlife such as the Iberian Imperial eagle, in the gorgeous plains of Castro Verde, with its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

You’ll also discover the kindness from local communities who live and work along the N2 as they welcome you into their world.

It’s an unforgettable journey of discovery into the heartland of Portugal and you can never see everything at once, so we see many riders returning for more on our Portugal cycle tours.

9. Self-supported vs supported N2 trip?

After you’ve decided when to do your N2 cycling trip in Portugal (more on that above), the next question is how quickly you want to ride it (versus spend more time and really explore it).

After that, it’s time to consider whether a self-guided, guided or a supported tour is best for you.

Self-guided tours

Self-guided cycling in Portugal is ideal if you’re looking to be flexible and customise your N2 experience.

Our self-guided N2 cycling tour can be completed over six to eight days and features a loose daily itinerary with an N2 route map and destination accommodation for you to reach however you choose. We can also create custom trips that add more days and stops to the itinerary.

On a self-guided tour you manage your own time and can be flexible on your journey, choosing which places you’ll visit along the way.

Guided tours

Guided cycling tours in Portugal include a more structured daily itinerary, with guided activities discovering the ancient traditions, local myths, and unique stories that the N2 route has to offer.

A local guide with both professional training and exciting personal experiences will take you to some of must-see attractions on the route. As well as taking the pressure off the travel and planning process, guided cycling tours are also a great opportunity to meet other travellers and locals.

On our guided cycling tours, all equipment and meals are taken care of by the travel company team, so you can just ride your bike and enjoy the experience without any responsibilities.

If you would like to upgrade our self-guided N2 cycling tour into a supported or guided trip, please just get in touch.

Supported tours

Supported cycling tours are a hybrid of the self-guided and guided options.

You get the flexibility and customisation in planning your trip, but with support along the route from the travel company, with all the equipment and meals you need.

A perfect option for those looking for freedom to plan your own awesome trip, but the security of knowing all the logistics are taken care of.

10. What is the N2 passport?

The N2 passport is a pocket guide that’s used to collect stamps along the N2 route.

It’s a fun way to add something extra to your journey, bringing a host of new experiences and interactions with local businesses and communities in each of the 35 municipalities crossed by the N2 road.

It was created by the Association of Municipalities of the National Road Route 2 (AMREN2) and you can pick up your passport from a Tourist Information Centre to begin your extra adventure along the N2. The tourist office in Chaves can be found at Terreiro da Cavalaria if you’re starting your ride there.

It’s worth pointing out that in a few cases some of the destinations are up to 30 kilometres off the main N2 route, so you’ll be adding distance onto your ride to collect a stamp. However, the warm welcome of the people you’ll meet and extra experiences you’ll have on your epic ride will make it all the more worthwhile!

11. Are there any books about cycling the N2?

You can find out more about cycling the N2 in this comprehensive travel guide, titled “ Foge comigo ”.

This book features detailed information about the N2 road and everything you can find along it. You can buy it via that link and also at some tourist offices and local establishments along the N2 (e.g. accommodation, restaurants and shops selling regional products). It is available in Portugese and English.

A new, pocket-sized version for cyclists is due to be released with suggestions of quieter alternatives to some of the busier sections of the road.

12. What are your best tips for people cycling in Portugal/cycling the N2 for the first time?

Be prepared for different climate conditions and hot and cold weather. The ever-changing landscapes bring a host of different temperatures so being prepared will pay off in the long run (or ride)!

We are often asked “Is the N2 safe?”.

We say, a (conditional) yes. Of course, no road is ever completely safe when it’s an open road that anyone may use. In the case of the N2, it’s also very long so there will always be some sections that are more busy than others. You need to take all the usual precautions – for example we recommend cycling safely, using lights in case of reduced visibility and wearing visible clothing.

But relatively speaking, the N2 is a pretty quiet road that we find our customers just love cycling.

Restaurants and places to stay

There are plenty of cycling friendly cafes and restaurants along the N2 route, and if you’re staying overnight along the route, many hotels have safe cycle storage.

Along the way when passing the cities, towns and villages there are plenty of bike shops with repair services. Of course, where customers travel with us we will also be on hand to help and advise if there are any mechanical problems!

If you’re doing a DIY trip, research the bike shops along the route and make sure you know how to get to them if you need to take a pit stop en route.

There is a variety of regional sweet and savoury delicacies to choose from on this trip.

On the savoury side, Pastéis de Chaves – a puff-pastry semi-circle filled with veal – is a great way to start off the trip while you are in the north of Portugal. In Autumn, chestnuts are also a must.

Around Lamego, you can try the traditional Bôla – bread stuffed with charcuterie meats – or a variety of charcuterie and wines from the region.

Goatling is a seasonal dish that’s typical in the last trimester of the year. Chanfana – prepared with goat and available all year – is traditional in the mountains of central Portugal.

River lamprey from the Mondego river is also a seasonal delicacy, available from February to April.

When talking about regional sweet treats, there is no town in Portugal that doesn’t have its specialty! On the N2, some you may find are Cristas de Galo and Pitos de Santa Luzia (around Vila Real), lemon and honey based candy from Régua (Rebuçados da Régua), Cornos de Penude (available in Penude in January), Bolo-podre (“rotten cake”) in Castro Daire, Viriatos in Viseu, Palha de Abrantes (in Abrantes) and a wide variety of conventual sweets in Lorvão.

Reaching Faro, small almond-based cakes with several shapes will allow you to end the trip on a sweet note!

Finally, it is very important to maintain a sustainable training routine, seeking out hills or varied terrain, attempting to simulate the type of riding you’ll find on the N2. Build a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour to its fullest, and make sure you’re comfortable for consecutive big kilometre days.

You might notice references to both the N2 and EN2. They are the same thing! EN2 stands for “Estada Nacional 2”. It’s often abbreviated to N2.

Thanks for sharing. I am off to Portugal in the New Year and will return in September to cycle N2. I am glad I found your blog. Great overview and lots of helpful information on N2.

Planning on cycling the n2 south -north with my wife early -mid April 2023. We prefer self supported but wondered if you offered / could advise on return travel or other ways to get bikes home. The perennial challenge of long distance a to b bike tours!

Hi Simon, I don’t know about return travel, apologies, but hopefully someone else reading this might be able to help you. Have a great trip!

Eurobike – your specialist for cycle tours with children

A cycle tour with children is definitely one of the most beautiful and most suitable ways to go on holiday with the whole family. So the trip goes smoothly and all family members enjoy a wonderful family holiday, there is a lot to consider!

As a specialist in cycle tours with children in Europe, Eurobike offers a variety of different cycle tours for families that meet all the requirements of a great cycle tour with children:

The right stages with children

The perfect cycle tour with children starts with the careful selection of the route. Of course, the children’s age and experience with cycling also plays a role. Excessive demands on children can quickly lead to frustration and stress for parents, two things that have absolutely no place in a cycling holiday with children. That is why we at Eurobike pay particular attention to the route selection, the length of the stages and the children’s suitability to the individual cycle paths. So nothing stands in the way of a carefree holiday with even the smallest family members!

Family by the lake, father gives child high five

Route selection

In order to avoid being overwhelmed, the route should in principle be rather flat and have little or no inclines. Small inclines can create a sense of achievement in parents and children, but they should be the exception. River bike paths like the  Danube Cycle Path , the  Moselle Cycle Path  and the  Adige Cycle Path  are a good choice. These naturally run downhill and are particularly scenic. But other routes that run flat or even continuously downhill are very suitable for a cycle tour with children. Good examples are the family-friendly  Lake Constance Cycle Path  and the  Alpe Adria Cycle Path .

Cycle paths suitable for children

Not only the natural condition of the route is important. When cycling with children, there is another important factor: road traffic. A lot of traffic leads to insecurity and quickly reduces the fun of cycling. Therefore, you should definitely pay attention to the course of the route. In recent years the number and quality of cycle paths has improved enormously. In many regions of Europe there are special cycle paths for cyclists away from the roads, such as our  family trip along the Danube  or our  family trip along the Adige in South Tyrol , which can be cycled with children without any danger. Away from the cycle paths, you should pay attention to a route with little traffic. But roads with a little traffic are also easy to navigate with children.

Length of the stage

In addition to the nature of the terrain, the distance of the stages is also important. The further the distance covered, the longer the time on the bike and the more strenuous the day becomes. Breaks are particularly important on a cycle tour with children and, in addition to the variety, also provide a boost of energy for the rest of the tour. You should always plan enough time for fun adventures along the route.

The length of the stage should be chosen according to the experience of cycling and additional activities. A stage length of up to 45 kilometres can be done with experienced children. But shorter routes of around 15 kilometres or more also have their appeal, provided the supporting activities are right. On multi-day cycle tours, it is nice if the stage length varies on a daily basis on order to allow for relaxation on individual days.

A day break filled with other activities is a great way to make your cycling holiday with children even more varied. An average stage length of 30 to 35 kilometres per day has proven itself for active families.

Family on bicycles riding along the Danube Cycle Path on the banks of the Danube

We have special requirements for our  accommodation  for cycle tours with children: it must match the length of the stage and be close to the route, there must be a safe place to store bikes and it must offer enough space for them. In addition, the smooth flow of luggage transport is important. Furthermore, for family cycle tours, the selected accommodation is particularly family-friendly and offer spacious rooms. Where possible, we will book accommodation for your family with a swimming pool, playground or other additional offer for families so that your children can really enjoy their stay.

Holiday farm beautiful view with playground and mountain view

A cycle tour with children becomes the perfect family holiday when there are many highlights and adventures off the beaten track in addition to cycling. So the children also have a goal in mind that promises an additional reward. Great bathing opportunities, such as along the  Ten Lakes family tour  in the Salzburg region and much more make a cycle tour for families a great adventure. Or at the end of the trip there is a great region with countless opportunities for fun and games, like on our  family tour to Lake Garda . If there are also playgrounds, museums and great nature with numerous animal species along the route, every child will have fun.

Child playing in the water on Schmittenhöhe

The most important ‘tool’ for a cycle tour is of course the  bike . In order for the cycle tour to be fun on holiday, the bike must comply with road traffic regulations, be low-maintenance and sufficiently robust. The bike has to be the right size for both children and adults. If it is too small or too big, pedalling will quickly become ineffective, the seat uncomfortable and potentially make cycling unsafe.

In addition to the bikes and electric bikes for adults with solid quality and the best comfort based on the proven quality of KTM bikes, we also offer children of all ages the right base for a successful cycle tour. For your children you can choose from the following:

  • Children’s bikes 21 speed (with freewheel/20/24/26 inches)
  • Tag-along (with free wheel/20 inches)
  • Child trailer for 1 to 2 children
  • Children’s bike 20 inches + Follow-Me tandem coupling

Travel documents for families

As with all of our cycle tours, our family tours also include the tried and tested  travel documents  package. It contains detailed map material, route book and city maps and further information. The specialty: In the route book you will find a lot of information about adventures for children along the route under ‘Things to See and Play’. This not only guarantees fun for the whole family, but also ensures their safety. Because security also includes the appropriate maps and preparation for the route. Cycling happily with children can quickly end on a busy road and thus increases the risk of accidents. All necessary telephone numbers should be at hand so that in the event of an accident or breakdown we can react immediately. It is also important to know about the next bike workshop so that in the event of a breakdown the bike can be quickly repaired, and the tour continued.

Luggage transfer  is included in the price of all of our family cycle tours. So you can pack everything in the suitcase that you and your family would like to have with you on holiday. Because travelling with the family always means lots of luggage. But thanks to our luggage transfer you don’t need to make compromises when choosing your luggage – you cycle relaxed from accommodation to accommodation and your luggage is comfortably transported by us to your next accommodation.

golden light on lake and canoe

10 of the best European activity breaks with a spirit of adventure

Fancy seatrekking, swimrunning or bodypainting? These and more familiar outdoor pursuits are on offer at destinations from northern Norway to the Greek islands

‘Slow happiness’ in Italy, Finland, Sweden or Iceland

The Scotland-based company Slow Adventure advocates a more mindful approach to activity holidays. Options include climbing and yoga in the Italian Alps, mountain biking in Sweden and horse riding and rambling in Iceland. On the Finnish Happiness trip, guests stay in log cabins by a lake in Lapland and activities include canoeing under the midnight sun, hiking, swimming, swamp foraging and daily saunas. On all trips, 5% of the fee goes to local conservation projects, which in Finland could mean helping protect the rare Saimaa ringed seal, preserving forests or supporting a children’s environmental charity. From £876 for five nights, slow-adventure.com

Swim, snorkel and hike in Croatia, Italy or Sweden

The new, sustainable sport of seatrekking involves moving along a coastline in water and on land, leaving no trace – swimming, snorkelling and hiking, and sleeping in the open air. SeaNomads is one of a number of companies now offering guided tours: on Cres, Croatia; in Kullaberg, Sweden; and in Portofino and Elba, Italy. A typical day starts with yoga and breathing exercises, followed by swimming and hiking, then setting up camp, eating around the fire and sleeping on an airbed (under a tarp if it’s raining).

There are also free-diving and cliff-jumping sessions. Beginners’ tours include an extra introductory day, and all equipment – wetsuit, fins, snorkel, sleeping bag, mattress, stove, water bag – is provided. From £392 for a four-night beginners’ tour , next trip 12-16 June , seanomads.de

Boots or bike – and a raft, France

inflatable boat with bike on it, on wooded river

Another up-and-coming adventure sport, packrafting involves hiking with a portable inflatable one-person boat for crossing lakes or navigating rivers. Secret River Expeditions runs two-day trips around the Verdon Gorge, south-east France, either exploring lakes just north of the gorge or entering the canyon itself for a more advanced journey with rapids and abseiling.

It also runs two- or three-day bikerafting adventures in Annecy and Aix-les-Bains, where you cycle rather than hike, and paddle along rivers, canals and lakes (the bikes are carried on the boats). Some trips feature bivouacs or camping; others have options to stay in lodges or a hotel. One-day or half-day tasters are also available (from £73/£43). From £330 for two days or £407 for three, secretriver-expe.com

On the ropes in Poland

women training with suspended slings

“Aerial movement” combines acrobatics, fitness training, pilates and yoga, using a kind of hammock to support the body. Beginners can try it on a week-long woodland retreat in the Beskid mountains of southern Poland. There are daily skills sessions using silks, hoop, trapeze, rope and bungee, and daily aerial yoga or pilates classes.

In between, guests can hike the forest trails, perhaps to the summit of Barania Gora (1,220 metres). Participants follow a 16/8 intermittent fasting diet, with brunch at 11am and dinner at 7pm, followed by a 16-hour fast. The new-build retreat centre has shared and private rooms. From £1,150 for seven nights, 10% off for bookings 90 days in advance, next retreat 2-9 April , flowmove.eu

Paddleboarding Norway’s fjords

Standup paddleboarding on a lake in northern Norway.

Standup paddleboarding is booming, and SUP-focused holidays now range from mindfulness to fitness. SUP & Soul’s Norwegian retreat combines paddleboarding with nature connection in a forest near Ekne, north of Trondheim. SUP sessions take place on fjords and a mountain lake.

Other activities include hiking and swimming; forest yoga and qigong ; and art, music and dance workshops. There is also a summer solstice ceremony. Guests stay in tree tents, yurts or cabins. From £ 1,450 for six nights, 17-23 June , supandsoul.co.uk

Spain’s three peaks challenge

Tackling Spain’s three peaks, in the Sierra Nevada.

Those who’ve done the British Three Peaks Challenge (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon) may be tempted by the Spanish equivalent – though Los Tres Picos are considerably higher. Adventurous Ewe runs a four-night trip in Sierra Nevada, home to the three highest mountains in mainland Spain: Alcazaba (3,371m), Veleta (3,394m) and Mulhacén (3,482m).

The group climbs a mountain a day, trekking for seven to 10 hours each day and staying in remote huts. It is a tough challenge with some scrambling, but no climbing experience is needed – and the views over mountains to the Mediterranean make all that effort worthwhile. £ 725 for four nights, next trip 27-31 May , adventurousewe.co.uk

Horse riding in Albania

Horse riders on a mountain trail in Albania

Equus Journeys runs horseback trail rides across Europe (and the world), aimed at adventurous, intermediate-level riders. Riders move on almost every day, camping or staying in simple accommodation. Trips range from short breaks in Ireland to eight days trekking across Iceland.

On the Ancient Mountain Trails trip in Albania, riders explore hills, valleys and forests, medieval villages, ruined castles and Byzantine monasteries. The trip starts and finishes in the Unesco-listed city of Gjirokastër and nights are spent at homestays, cooking and eating with local families.

Beginners would be better with a centre-based holiday – there are options in Poland, Portugal, Ireland and Italy, some suitable for families. From £ 1,061 for seven nights, next trip 23-30 March , equus-journeys.com

Surfing for newbies in Portugal

Beginners’s surfing near Lagos

Beginners can learn to surf in a supportive, small group environment on this week-long women-only camp in Lagos, Portugal. There are five full days of surf coaching, with one instructor to a maximum of four students, one-to-one video coaching and group theory lessons. The price also includes two surf skate sessions and one surf-inspired yoga class (daily yoga is available for an extra cost, as are massages and a SUP tour).

Guests stay in a surf lodge with a pool, whirlpool bath and gardens, in private or shared rooms, safari tents or cabins. Most meals are provided, including a welcome dinner with wine-tasting and an end-of-week barbecue. Also suitable for intermediate surfers. Seven nights from £ 844 , 13-20 April , rideonretreats.com

Body art on the Lofoten islands

Woman’s body

The ancient art of bodypainting is having a resurgence, with a bodypainting weekend in Hvar, Croatia, on 8 and 9 June, and the World Bodypainting festival in Klagenfurt, Austria, from 17-21 September.

A new retreat on Norway’s Lofoten islands mixes bodypainting, nature and movement. Participants learn basic body art, plus techniques such as camouflage, abstract, UV and face painting. There are hula-hoop classes, moving meditations, hiking, swimming, SUP, and a live bodypainting show night. Guests stay in beachfront cabins with use of an outdoor hot tub and sauna, and eat locally grown vegan/vegetarian food. No art experience is necessary (but you probably need to be comfortable with nudity). From £ 1,670 for seven nights, 6-12 August , vilijaart.com

Swimrun camp, Spain

Swimrun is an endurance sport, usually for teams of two, combining trail running and open-water swimming. The original race, in 2002, was an island-hopping contest on the Stockholm archipelago that started as a drunken bet between friends and is now the Ötillö Swimrun World Championship.

In April, a training camp in Calella de Palafrugell on the Costa Brava will be led by Sarah Hansson, a swimrun champion, personal trainer and yoga teacher. Participants run and swim 12-18km a day around national parks, mountains, beaches and villages, with afternoon yoga sessions for recovery, and stay in a four-star hotel with pool, a few minutes’ walk from the sea. The camp is aimed at intermediate levels and above, but beginners can find UK workshops at swimrun-advice.com . £535 for four days, swimrun-adventure-camp-costa-brava-2024
