The Cat Empire

Where The Angels Fall

New album out now.

“Felix and I first formed The Cat Empire more than 20 years ago and a sheer zest for music was floating in the air. We had many conversations about new concepts, like the piano playing the rhythms, the percussion forming the melody, and things were fresh and exciting to say the least. When Felix and I decided to create our most recent recording, Where The Angels Fall, we were determined to recapture the energy of our debut release. Not only were we brilliantly successful, not a day of its making going by without big grins on our faces, we also managed to make one of the most sophisticated albums in The Cat Empire repertoire. I have been listening to this album on repeat and am still in love with it”

– Ollie

“I’m so excited to have this album out in the world. I think our fans are going to love it. We put everything we had (and then some) into making it. It was pure music making from the first note to the last. It’s overflowing with dynamics, contrasts, emotion, madness, and a deep sense of celebration. It came out of an immense time – the change of line up, the death of my younger brother, the effects of Covid on live music. Coming through all that with songs that are going to light up stages for years to come feels very very special. I’m pinching myself. It’s the start of something magic.”

– Felix

While long-time supporters may be saddened over the news, The Cat Empire will continue in the hands of founding members Felix and Ollie, taking the band’s renowned live shows to fans far and wide as a “ re-imagined, vibrant, cross-cultural, and joyful collective of musicians and artists .”

Sounds mysterious, but we’re definitely in!

In the meantime though, The Cat Empire aren’t slowing down for a second – announcing two new songs for release in October, following the four singles they’ve already released in the last two months.

The Cat Empire - Coming To Meet You (Official Lyric Video)

After 20 incredible years of touring and making music together, we have made the decision to disband, and to make way for a new incarnation of The Cat Empire to come to life fronted by Felix Riebl and Ollie McGill. The Cat Empire began as a musical jazz project in Melbourne, Australia in 2001, and took on a life of its own, so much bigger than any of us could have even dreamed or imagined. As we look back on the past two decades, we are so proud of what we achieved; from the (almost 1500) live shows and festivals we have played around the world, to the seven studio albums which resulted in global chart success, as well as our cherished independence, and more importantly the interpersonal experiences we amassed and grew from. We directed our own musical adventure and created our own opportunities along the way. We’ve played Letterman and Leno, Bonnaroo and SummerStage NYC, opened the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, performed at Bluesfest 15 times, Falls Festival 11, Woodford Folk 10, Winnipeg Folk Festival 8 times, and Blues Balls (Switzerland) and Adelaide Fringe 7 times each. More than half of our live audience lives in Europe. We hold the record for the most shows played in a row at Edinburgh Festival (16), and in 2019 we played Glastonbury twice. In the meantime, deepest thanks for sharing this journey with us, for your devotion, for playing our music, sharing it with your friends and family, carrying it around the world in your backpacks, allowing it to be the soundtrack to your big life moments, for attending our shows, and for making it all so worthwhile and enriching. Best Wishes from The Cat Empire

The Cat Empire will farewell their original lineup with a series of shows in December. Tickets are on sale via Ticketmaster.com.au.

About The Cat Empire

The Cat Empire avatar

Formed in Melbourne, Australia and adored the world over, The Cat Empire is a musical success story that continues to be written. Throughout their 20 year career, the band's stratospheric trajectory has continued unabated, becoming one of Australia's most successful musical exports, growing an army of ardent fans at home and abroad. Since their teens, the six bound together by a love of music, and bolstered by the career-long guidance of Manager Correne Wilkie, have gone about the business of crafting infectious, genre-embracing anthems and releasing chart-topping, multi-platinum albums to take to the live stage. It was not unusual to find the band performing on main stage bills at iconic international festivals, selling out the world's most famous arenas, mobbed by supporters and media at airports in Spain, and appearing on top rating T.V. shows like Letterman and Leno. In September 2021, The Cat Empire announced that after 20 years, the band's original line-up would play their final shows together in a series of massive headline shows around Australia, a final festival performance at Bluesfest and a virtual concert. The next chapter of The Cat Empire begins with founding members Felix and Ollie stepping forward with "a re-imagined, vibrant, cross-cultural, and joyful collective of musicians and artists".
