I think this was the best tour that I chose thankfully, I had some help from my mom in order to choose which one so for whoever is trying to decide which one to do this one’s perfect you get to do multiple things visit multiple sites and also have 3 to 4 hours free time which works if you wanna go visit other places or shopping to just keep in mind that when you choose you can to do other things after you visit the sites with the tour guide and the group

I chose this itinerary mostly because I wanted to visit Shirakawago. And it surely worth it! The ancient village was a hidden gem. Hotels were all 3 stars or better. Tour guides provided excellent services and spoke decent English. Will recommend this to friends.
Very good value. The hotels were better than I expected. Breakfasts had lots of choices. Bus ride was smooth and the tour guide spoke excellent English.

This tour is very expensive for what you actually get, as nearly all of the travel is on public transport which is very time consuming. So much time was taken up on public transport that there was not enough time to explore the places we visited.
The accommodations were good the food was excellent and the tour was exactly what I wanted it was an active tour that we spent most of our time out doors and in smaller cities and towns Our tour guide Toshi was excellent

A really enjoyable way to experience Japan for the first time. The destinations were both diverse and fascinating. A great tour overall!
The tour guide wasn't as knowledgeable as l thought she should be. Lots of things we passed and weren't told about and her english wasn't very good

This tour was incredible. I didn't quite realise how much there is to see and experience in Japan and although we weren't able to cover everything (of course) this tour came REALLY close! Whether you're in it for the food, the history, the architecture or bars and entertainment, this tour has something for everyone. It's such a great way to travel Japan because you can get a taste of multiple cities, so you can note which parts are your favourite and go back.
This tour has plenty of fun activites with a little bit of free time to do some shopping/other activities. The accommodations we stayed in were all nice including the hostel. And Mike was the best tour guide ever! Super nice, chill, and helpful. I even had plan a geisha performance during one of the free segments, but the person who runs the kendo class that’s included in the trip had rescheduled our class last minute during my geisha performance, so I would of had to choose one or the other. Mike was nice enough to help me look for another geisha performance because I really wanted to see one, but didn’t want to miss out on the kendo class. Really went above and beyond for me and I really appreciate it. I would recommend this trip to anyone. Especially if you really want to go to Japan, but you are very hesitant to go due to the language barrier.

The tour organizer has very, very poor communication, planning and organizational skills. The final itinerary was sent 2weeks before the start of the actual trip, I have to remind them by email to send it to us asap as they promised it will be sent a month before the actual trip. We where told initially that they will arrange our airport transfer and have told them we will be arriving two days before the actual tour, but after days before we've been told that we have to do it ourselves. The two hotel from original itinerary was changed on the final one provided so it caused some confusion on our side. Their representative met with us on the first day of the tour to sort out our JR. Pass and it took 2hours of our precious time to do this, we almost missed the pre-booked museum that day. Their hotel choices where below average, first one is in Ikeburo with bfast included but only seaweed soup and toast where given, again we have to travel to Shinjuku station to get the train to Hakone (very inconvenient), they could just chosen a hotel in Shinjuku instead. In the morning next we arrived in Hakone, we supposed to drop off our luggage at the next hotel to free our hands to roam around the area and found that it was closed and nobody around to asked for information so we have to dragged our luggage back to the station to put them in the locker. I have contacted their representative but he even asked me the name of the hotel (unbelievable, how could he not know all this details). They replied around 2.30ish pm and was told it was unmanned and we where given a PIN number to access, again they should have known this important details and informed us even the day/night before the trip. The next day we travelled again to Kyoto, to avoid the hassle of dropping off our luggage palarva we've decided to use the coin lockers at the station. It was late in the afternoon when we arrived at the hotel the receptionist asked us to pay City Tax 1200yen for 3nights stay, this again we where unaware of. I messaged the representative and to the people on the WhatsApp group and question about this city tax, they said they will refund me with the money so no choice I have paid.Again breakfast was included but only varieties of bread available and some butter and jams and coffee or water. Unsatisfied again. On arrival at Hiroshima after 3days this is where the confusion happens as the name of the hotel was different on the final itinerary they've sent us (this was our mistake we owned this as we didn't checked the final itinerary). We've only stayed at the Flex hotel (supposed to be two nights) for a night as wanting to have more time in Osaka instead (paid privately for one night
I recently took a trip to Japan and visited Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Osaka, and I can confidently say it was one of the best travel experiences I've ever had! The tours were fantastic and provided great insights into each city's culture and history. The transportation was also very reliable, making it easy to get around from one city to another. The accommodations were top-notch, with comfortable rooms and excellent service. I highly recommend booking a trip to Japan with Bamba and experiencing all that it has to offer!

I was traveling with my spouse, tween, and 70+ year-old parents. We visited during the busy cherry blossom season. We were lucky as we arrived during the peak of this season and cherry blossoms were abundant. It was also quite crowded, so I appreciated my family having our own guide (versus being part of a bigger tour group). Also, it was nice to be picked up at the airport so that we didn't have to find our way around a foreign country upon arrival. I think the value was good considering it included the hotel, entrance fees to places visited, and public transportation fares. It was nice not to have to worry about the logistics of getting from one place to another in a foreign country. Our online tour consultant was very responsive and helpful. Also, the guides were knowledgeable, kind, and accommodating. The biggest challenge is that the days involved quite a bit of walking, which was difficult for my elderly parents. If I convince them to go on another trip, I would add in more leisurely days. Maybe that's my fault for not asking for some lighter days. I'm a bit torn because as a traveler, you do want to make the most of each day you are there to visit all the beautiful sites; but, it can also be exhausting. This also meant having to lug luggage around various trains to the various destinations. We stayed in four different hotels as we traveled across Japan. It was a packed itinerary; we were able to see a lot in a short amount of time. Over the course of five days, we visited Tokyo, Mt. Fuji, Nara, Kyoto, Hiroshima, & Miyajima Island. Overall, an excellent trip that provided a snapshot of Japan. I would rate it four and a half stars if I could (but only whole stars were allowed). I recommend it for most families (including those with little ones and elderly); I would just add more rest days/free time (or fewer site visits per day), especially if you have members in your party that are young or elderly. Also, if you have members that have mobility issues (such as those in a wheelchair), I would work with the tour consultant as there were places that would be difficult to access. My consultant was great; I just don't think I took advantage of having chosen a “private, tailor-made" tour as much as I should have. I relied and trusted the recommendations. To be clear, their recommendations were all top notch, I just should have taken my family's (which included elderly parents) abilities more into account and been more vocal with what would be best to accommodate my specific family's needs.
Excellent customer service. Very efficient and responsive. Guides were informative. Thank you. I’ll be using your travel again. Highly recommend.

Much improved. I have been to Japan twice now both times with Discovi and this was by far the best trip I could have imagined. There are new guides all local Japanese every single one of them is amazing (Shinya was exceptional!) and a brand new Hotel not a hostal like before but even the hostal option is better this time. But the hotel has breakfast and it was AMAZING a mix of Japanese and American food. Great start to the day. And the PUB CRAWL!! Crazy night so much fun, thanks Discovi!
I expected this to be more touristy but I WAS SO SHOCKED This is a local tour! I felt like we had the nicest guides all Japanese and they knew so many little spots that you would never find yourself! Take this tour if you want to see the real Japan

It was a very nice experience. Zoey is a really good tour guide. She knew every route exactly and always knew where to go. She always acted very responsibly and always listened to the group's opinion that it was fun for everyone and that everyone could do their important things in Japan. She always took care of concerns and questions and suggested good options for activities. Overall, the trip was a great experience with many highlights. The best was made of the short time. Thank you very much again. Best wishes, Jeremias
The Japan Adventure tour with INTRO was simply amazing! I did so many activities and went to so many places - it allowed me to see a lot more of Japan than I would've done on my own. We got a glimpse into the real Japan from having expert local insight, as well as visiting all the top locations. Bathing in the onsens and sleeping on tatami mats were real highlights for me: it was all an incredible, once in a lifetime experience. Our leader Meg was so knowledgeable and passionate about the country and culture - she took brilliant care of us all and nothing was too much trouble. She helped organise all of our travel, kept us safe, navigated us around all of the cities and locations, and answered dozens of questions. I've never done a group tour before but this really was the best way to see Japan: it took all the stress out of planning, getting around, and speaking the language.

The whole experience was seamless. Supera seems to be a very good company with good prompt feedback at the planning stage. Eriko was an outstanding tour guide. She was knowledgeable, helpful, funny, kind and incredibly hardworking. I can't speak too highly of her. The food and accommodation surpassed my expectations as did the way the s company structured the tour. I highly recommend the Japan tour with Eriko.
This tour was fantastic. The tour owners are foodies so we were told and it showed. The tour itself was terrific and well organized but on top of that the restaurant and other food choices etc. were just stellar.

A really well organised trip with very good guides in Japan. From the outset the communication from Indus was excellent. We loved the "Indus app" that gave us al the info we needed for our trip. We were fortunate that we had a small group of 12 people only so we had a wonderful one on one experience with each of our guides in Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Osaka.

World Expeditions

World Expeditions

Our only gripe was the long bus trips involved at the beginning and end of each day. Kohei, our guide, was outstanding. He let us experience many aspects of Japanese culture, and he became as much a friend as a guide.
My husband and I went on the World Expiditions Back Roads of Japan Tour last year, and were extremely disappointed in the quality of guide provided. The guide had never done the tour, had never even been to half the places on the itinerary and was a complete loose cannon, on two occasions taking elicit drugs and drinking to the point of being unable to function. When the entire tour group sent complaints following the completion of the tour, World Expeditions were elusive and largely uncommunicative, and offered us all an insulting refund of about 12% of our tour cost. Needless to say, we will not be taking or recommending World Expeditions tours in the future.

Pricing for a Trip with Boutique Japan

The pricing guidelines below are intended to help you estimate the cost of your trip.

However, please keep in mind that these are not fixed categories. For example, some travelers love small boutique hotels, others prefer top-end luxury properties — and many like a mix of both.

The main factors that determine the price of each trip include:

  • The number of travelers in your party
  • Your travel dates (pricing is higher during  peak seasons )
  • Your preferences and priorities (for example, a trip including suites at Japan’s top hotels and a full-time private guide will cost more than an itinerary featuring stylish boutique hotels and a mix of guiding and free time)

Boutique | US $1,000-$1,400 per person per day

A Boutique trip includes a thoughtful selection of boutique accommodations, a mix of unique private experiences and independent exploration, and transport throughout the country primarily via Japan’s fantastic rail system.

Luxury  | US $1,400-$1,800 per person per day

A Luxury trip includes a thoughtful selection of luxury accommodations, a mix of exclusive private experiences with local experts (along with as much free time as you would like), and transport throughout the country via Japan’s fantastic rail system and private vehicles where appropriate.

Premier  | US $1,800 per person per day and up

A Premier trip simply includes the best of the best, with boundless possibilities.

Special Notes

Please note that we specialize in trips of one week and longer.

The prices above are per person per day and based on double occupancy. We love working with solo travelers, but even though we do not charge a single supplement per se , some services do cost more (on a per-person basis) when not shared with other travelers.

In the course of planning your trip , we typically require a small itinerary design fee. This enables us to dedicate truly personalized attention to each of our travelers. The amount varies depending on factors including trip length and the nature of your request, and is fully applicable to the final cost of your trip.

Your personalized itinerary is offered as a completely bespoke package, and we don’t include itemized pricing. Some travelers don’t have a specific budget in mind, but if you have a preferred range or limit please just let us know and we’ll be happy to work with you.

For any questions, please don’t hesitate to  contact us !

We have just returned from an outstanding 19-day holiday in Japan thanks to Boutique Japan. I cannot recommend this travel company highly enough. We have traveled extensively but Boutique Japan is by far the best travel agency that we… Read More

These are some of the most common questions we get from travelers. If you have any other questions, we’ll be happy to help so please  contact us .

Are these group tours?

No, at Boutique Japan we specialize in completely private itineraries, designed around you.

How does your service work?

We begin by listening and learning about your interests, priorities, and travel style. Then we provide expert input to make sure you’re aware of special places and experiences you may not have considered.

Next, we design a completely customized Japan trip just for you, taking your feedback into account along the way. Throughout the process, we make things as easy and enjoyable as possible for you. See more details in  Planning Your Trip with Boutique Japan .

Which areas of Japan do you offer?

We offer private itineraries throughout all of Japan. Our sample trips above are here to provide inspiration, and there are also many other  places in Japan we absolutely love .

When it comes to your itinerary, we’ll provide personalized suggestions in the course of planning your trip.

How do you choose your private guides and local experts?

We hear a lot from travelers who have had lackluster, unsatisfying tours in the past. While some of our clients enjoy having a guide from start to finish, most commonly our travelers enjoy a mix of guided time along with free time for independent exploration and relaxation (in our experience, the optimal balance is quite different for everyone).

When it comes to private guides and local experts, we have unusually high standards (few things in travel are more disappointing than a mediocre guide), and through constant travel and exploration we’ve personally developed a network of wonderful guides and insightful experts throughout Japan. In Japan, even more so than most elsewhere, trust is established only over long periods of time. Our tours are based on valuable relationships carefully cultivated over many years, and we’re extremely fortunate to work with remarkable people around the country.

For us, it’s about far more than just having knowledge: we seek out the truly engaging individuals who are not only bright and knowledgeable, but also flexible and quick-thinking. Perhaps above all, they must be fun, interesting people you’ll actually want to spend your valuable time with.

Can we use points or miles to book our own hotels?

As points lovers ourselves, we completely understand wanting to use them. However, because accommodations form such an integral part of each trip we design, we arrange all accommodations as part of our service. This helps us ensure a truly seamless experience for all our clients, from start to finish.

What about restaurant reservations?

For nearly all of our travelers, Japanese food is a high priority. As part of your trip, we can include special culinary experiences such as private market tours with local experts, as well as intimate guided dining experiences at unique and wonderful restaurants.

Apart from these thoughtfully curated experiences, please note that we don’t offer restaurant reservations or meal-planning as part of our service. However, like most of our travelers we are passionate about Japanese cuisine, and a few months before your trip we will send you a list of our recommended restaurants, along with information on how to make dining reservations in Japan.

I want to visit Tokyo Disney and Universal Studios Japan.

These can be wonderful places, and are especially popular with families traveling to Japan , but in the interest of being upfront please note that we are far from theme park experts. Because of this, we can’t provide any special insight when it comes to visiting theme parks or obtaining tickets.

This being said, we do have many clients visit on their own, and we’re more than happy to build free time into your itinerary for you to self-arrange any theme park visits of interest.

Will booking through you save me money?

Some travel companies tout their access to discounts, but the main reason travelers book through us is to gain access to our profound Japan expertise and extensive network throughout the country.

Not only will we help you dream up a completely unique itinerary through our in-depth knowledge of Japan and extraordinarily personalized trip-planning process, we’ll also save you countless hours expertly coordinating the nitty-gritty logistics of your trip.

Our service is ideal for travelers who appreciate expert assistance and meaningful, personalized experiences.

Who are your trips for?

Our  travelers are based around the world, in the Americas, Australia, and beyond. The majority of our travelers are couples,  families , small groups of friends, and solo travelers.

Why should I travel with Boutique Japan?

We are accredited Japan Travel Specialists, and maintain active memberships with respected organizations including  IATAN  and  ATTA .

Perhaps more interestingly, unlike most travel companies we intentionally work with fewer travelers. This lets us take an extraordinarily personalized approach when it comes to your trip. Along with our expertise and creativity, our low-volume approach is one reason  Condé Nast Traveler  magazine considers Boutique Japan founder  Andres Zuleta  a  Top Travel Specialist  for Japan:

“Zuleta’s Boutique Japan is a small company that eschews volume and spends more time customizing each trip to offer travelers a fresh, creative approach to Japan – something that discerning travelers seek out after learning of Zuleta’s deep immersion into the Japanese language and culture from years of living in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.”

If you’re as obsessed with the details as we are, chances are we’ll be a good fit — see what our travelers say  here  and on  Google Reviews .

International travel documents for children

See what documents a child needs to travel to or from the U.S. alone or with a parent or relative.

Children traveling to the U.S.

All children, including infants, must have their own travel documents such as a passport or document from a Trusted Traveler Program to enter the U.S. If you travel or are going to travel with a child, consider taking the following documents:

  • If the child is traveling with only one of their custodial parents, they must have a letter of consent, preferably in English and notarized, from the other parent or signed by both parents. The letter should say "I acknowledge that my son/daughter is traveling outside the country with [the name of the adult] with my permission."
  • If one parent has sole custody of the child, a copy of the custody document can take the place of the other parent's letter.
  • Parents who frequently cross the border by land with a minor must always carry a letter of permission from the other parent.

U.S. citizen children traveling abroad

Ports of entry in many countries have security measures to prevent international child abduction . If you are traveling alone with your child, you may be required to present documentation proving you are the parent or legal guardian. You may also need a letter of permission from the other parent for your child to travel.

If your child travels alone, depending on the country, they may be required to present a notarized letter from both parents or their legal guardian. If a minor is traveling abroad and is not accompanied by both parents or a legal guardian, contact the embassy or consulate of the country you will be visiting and ask about entry and exit requirements for that country.

Promise Mascot Agency's Kaso-machi Draws From Japan's "Dying Towns"

  • Kaso-machi offers a unique gameplay experience - reviving the town by finding jobs for out-of-work mascots.
  • Japan's depopulating towns inspired the game's setting, with research drawn from real-life ghost towns.
  • Originally urban, the game shifted to a rural Fukuoka setting following suggestions from Nakamura and Mattori.

Many games take place in a dying, depopulated town - it's a staple of the farming , life simulation, and city builder genres. But Promise Mascot Agency's Kaso-machi is a little bit different. Its bleak state is part natural depopulation, part mysterious curse, and reviving it involves not farming or crafting but finding jobs for its out-of-work mascot population. When creating Promise Mascot Agency , developer Kaizen Game Works drew from the real-life phenomenon of depopulation in Japan to create the rural "ghost town" yakuza-in-exile Michi finds himself banished to at the beginning of the game.

Game Rant spoke with four members of the Kaizen Game Works team: game director Oli Clarke Smith, art director Rachel Noy, game developer Phil Crabtree, and marketing and communications lead Sam Smith. The team detailed the research process that went into creating Kaso-machi, their decision to switch from an urban to a rural setting, and the contributions of Ikumi Nakamura and Mai Mattori, who were instrumental in making the "dying town" setting a key element of Promise Mascot Agency.

The Best Modern-Day JRPGs, Ranked

Modern JRPG titles still definitely live up to older classics. Here's a look at the best of the genre from the last few years.

Japan Is Full Of Ghost Towns And Near-Ghost Towns

An aging population, declining birth rates, and migration to larger cities with more solid infrastructure have resulted in many "ghost towns" scattered across Japan. These are especially prominent in rural areas such as Hokkaido, Shikoku, and parts of Kyushu. Other towns have not fully become "ghost towns," but have sunk in population as the younger generation increasingly moves to urban areas, businesses shut down and available jobs decrease. Promise Mascot Agency's Kaso-machi is one such town - it is slightly more populated than the near-empty Paradise Island of Kaizen's first title, Paradise Killer , but not by much.

Noy explained that Ikumi Nakamura sent the team an "art bible" filled with references drawn from throughout Japan, which drew their attention to the phenomenon of depopulating towns. Although they ultimately chose to place Kaso-machi in Fukuoka Prefecture due to its yakuza presence, their research process included "Google maps, holiday photos" and more from locations throughout Japan. Noy was particularly inspired by reams of "decayed movie posters" fluttering in the breeze in Yubari, Hokkaido, an image that is strikingly captured in Kaso-machi's near-empty shopping district.

Promise Mascot Agency's Setting Changed From Urban To Rural

Originally, Rachel Noy explained, the team envisioned Promise Mascot Agency taking place in a city, such as Tokyo or Osaka. It was Ikumi Nakamura and Mai Mattori who suggested Fukuoka Prefecture, an area of Kyushu known for the presence of dangerous, highly active yakuza groups such as the Kudo-kai. Once Nakamura and Mattori introduced the Kaizen team to Fukuoka's yakuza history and the predominantly rural concept of "depopulating towns," Kaso-machi's final form quickly came together.

"It sparked some ideas in us: a hot, hazy town in the south, decaying in the sun. We hadn't really thought about that kind of vibe. But once they suggested that, we were like "Yeah, this is what we want to do.""

Game Rant had the opportunity to play a demo of Promise Mascot Agency, and found Kaso-machi to be an eerie, chilling yet compelling location to explore. Its few remaining residents are a mix of stubborn locals, profit-seeking entrepreneurs, and mascots tied to local concepts, such as grated yam and burial mounds, who feel that they can't live anywhere else. The result is a memorable location that effectively reflects a very real phenomenon currently occurring throughout apan: rural towns dying a slow, drawn-out death with no hope of revitalization. Kaso-machi, however, has hope in the form of the titular Promise Mascot Agency and Michi and Pinky, the bizarre duo who run it. The Fukuoka town may be a far cry from Stardew Valley's Pelican Town or the titular setting of My Time at Sandrock, but it too can be brought back to life by determined players when Promise Mascot Agency launches in 2025.
