What you'll do

Our english speaking guide will meet you at the port of Zadar.

Departure in the heart of the beautiful city of Zadar , a small settlement dating back about three thousand years and today epicenter of Dalmatian culture. The old town is a network of narrow streets with many monuments, its Roman forum and the ramparts surrounding the city.

Our visit begins with the Saint Anastasia's Cathedral , whose sarcophagus is located in the apse, at the top of the altar. This cathedral is one of the great works of Romanesque art.

Continuing our walk, we will contemplate the church of St Donat built in the ninth century. It is the most impressive church in the eastern Adriatic with its circular plan and three naves.

To the east we find St. Mary's Church , a twelfth-century Romanesque structure built by the Croatian-Hungarian king Koloman. The church has a tower with a steeple and a convent on the top floor; rooms are opened to the public and house a collection of relics and other items of great value.

After our visit, we will have the opportunity to visit the permanent exhibition of religious art entitled "Zadar Gold and Silver" ; the exhibition is composed of works of gold and silver from the eighth century to the Baroque; we will also find exhibitions by the famous writer Miroslav Krleza.

During our journey, we will see the "salute to the sun", the work of the architect Nikola Basic; This curious object consists of a circle of glass whose shape and composition allow it to absorb the sun's rays during the day; at night, it creates an impressive set of lights.

We will see another of the works of the same architect: "The organ of the sea" , an experimental musical instrument. It consists of hollow tubes, camouflaged by marble steps and which, in contact with the sea's waves, emit notes of music. This book gives the coast of Zadar a modern and elegant image, while offering citizens and tourists a place of rest and relaxation to contemplate the sea.

Our visit will end with a tasting of Marascino liquor (a typical Zadar liqueur) that we can taste at the Arsenal tavern located in the old town of Zadar, near the harbor. The Marascino liquor has a tradition of almost 400 years, it is the best known of Dalmatia; It is a sweet and sour liqueur seasoned with Marasca cherries; This type of cherries grow in Dalmatia and mainly around the city of Zadar.

  • The guided tour will last about 3 hours and we will walk a large part on uneven ground (about 100 steps); therefore, this tour is NOT suitable for people with reduced mobility, wheelchairs or strollers.
  • At the end of the visit, you will have about 2 hours of free time to continue to discover this beautiful city by yourself.
  • The order of visits may vary.

Known also as Zara, this beautiful port city of Croatia hides artistic and cultural secrets that you will discover during your cruise vacation.

The charm of this small town is that it's located a little away from the most tourist cities of Croatia, but this does not mean you can not admire the main attractions of the Dalmatian Coast!

In Zadar, you can enjoy a crystal clear sea, great weather, and delicious Mediterranean cuisine as well as beautiful alleys decorated with picturesque houses and cobblestone streets. Since in its past it was an Italian settlement, in the city you can still see some monuments that preserve its ancient history as the remains of the Roman Forum and the Zara Gate.

Mythical Zadar by Tuk-Tuk

Duration 2 hrs

Settle in for a spectacularly scenic ride around Zadar in a tuk-tuk, an open-air vehicle that resembles a golf cart. While driving through the city’s outskirts, you will be treated to uninterrupted views of one beautiful beach after another. Much of Zadar borders the sea, including its iconic sphinx statue. A wealthy resident built the concrete sculpture in 1918 as a tribute to his wife, who died prematurely. According to legend, a treasure is buried beneath the sphinx, which somewhat emulates the more famous one in Egypt. You will also pause at the Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun, two other unusual seaside attractions. The former plays music as seawater rushes through underground pipes fitted with whistles. The latter uses solar panels to collect energy that powers an imaginative light show each evening. For a historical understanding of Zadar, you will walk through Old Town, an area settled in the 9th century BC.

HIGHLIGHTS • Ride around Zadar in a tuk-tuk, a motorized vehicle that looks somewhat like a golf cart. • Stroll the wonderfully atmospheric, pedestrian-only streets in Zadar’s Old Town. • Behold Zadar’s iconic sphinx, a strangely incongruous concrete statue built in 1918. • Hear the Sea Organ play music as seawater rushes through its underground pipes.

Enjoy Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast With Zadar Shore Excursions

The Roman and Venetian ruins on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast are excellent examples of the sights you’ll see when you book Zadar shore excursions. The city’s coastal location also provides scenic water views with access to surrounding sights, beaches, and watersports.

Zadar cruise excursions that include a walking tour through the city’s Old Town reveal the city’s Byzantine, Venetian, and Roman architecture. See a Venetian tower, city gates that once helped make it the largest city fortress in the Republic of Venice, and columns of the Roman Forum dating back to 1 B.C. Take in beautiful churches and cathedrals of the Roman era.

Book Zadar cruise excursions to Krka National Park for a journey to the land of waterfalls. See the falls cascade over 17 natural gypsum barriers and enjoy the park’s unique ecological and cultural resources, including birds, fish, and an old mill.

Take a tour of the historic wonders of the Dalmatian coast. See the canyon-spanning Krka Bridge in the town of Sibenik, the town’s historic center, and visit the Cathedral of St. Jacob, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These are all unique experiences that any Mediterranean cruise passenger will enjoy.

Zadar shore excursions that explore the area’s natural wonder are among the most popular ways to enjoy shore time during a cruise to Zadar . Paklenica National Park offers many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, including guided spelunking in Modric Cave, complete with your own headlamp and overalls. You can also hike past Anica Kuk, a 1,300-foot iconic peak, and to the Velika and Mala Paklenica canyons.

Take an exciting guided canoe trip on the Zmanja and Krupa rivers. Paddle to Kastel Zegarski and Velebit Nature Park, passing cultural, historic, and natural wonders along the route and viewing the rivers’ abundant fish and plant life.

Work on your tan , swim in cool, refreshing waters, and lie in a hammock on a pebbly pine-forest beach on an excursion to Nin Ribera de Zadar, one of Zadar’s most popular beaches.

Indulge your senses on a culinary, cultural, and historical trek to the Royal Vineyards. Learn how the soil, climate, and sea air work together to create exceptional grapes that produce distinguished vintages. Sample some of the vineyard’s best wines accompanied by selected appetizers. Travel to the Nin Salt Works to see how the forces of nature - sun, air, water - combine to produce the region’s salt.
