Chobe Safari Lodge therefore offers an excellent getaway location to Chobe, Victoria Falls or Caprivi. Our close proximity to Victoria Falls International Airport, Livingstone International Airport and Kasane International Airport makes us easily accessible, with daily road transfers or charter flights connecting all these airports with Chobe Safari Lodge. The lodge has been recently renovated, matching a magical lodge experience to the spectacular game viewing. On Botswana’s far northern border lies the Kwando, Linyanti and Chobe River systems that form a mosaic of lakes, islands, channels and floodplains. Part of this system is the Chobe National Park, renowned for its vast herds of elephant and buffalo. The Sedudu Bar overlooks the river and floodplains, and is well-known as the sundowner spot in the region. Game drives within the Chobe National Park offer the opportunity to view the abundant elephant and other big game species up close, as well as the possibility of an encounter with one of the large predators. Game drives depart three times a day, alternatively there is an option of booking a full or half-day drive with a picnic lunch. Chobe River cruises have to be one of the finest game-viewing experiences in Africa, and with over 80,000 elephant in the park alone, they are a very frequent sighting. Hippo, water birds, buffalo, crocodile and puku are also viewed from the river. Private cruises, led by our expert guides are available throughout the day to suit your individual needs. Fishing for the legendary tiger fish and several species of bream provides an exciting fishing experience. Equipment is provided, and a knowledgeable guide is on hand for all expeditions.

Top 10 Best Chobe Luxury Safari Lodges & Camps

Top 10 Best Chobe Luxury Safari Lodges & Camps

Anthony is a renowned Africa expert and author of the Lonely Planet guide to Botswana & Namibia.

Chobe National Park is a southern African classic, a vast and superbly varied protected area with some of the best wildlife in Africa. Chobe stretches from the Chobe Riverfront area close to Kasane (and accessible within a couple of hours from Victoria Falls) to the wild and wonderful Savuti (also spelled Savute), which is known for its predator sightings. And wherever you are in the park, it’s the elephants that dominate: Chobe and the surrounding area have more elephants than anywhere else in Africa.

Choosing where to stay is an undoubted highlight of a visit here. Luxury lodges and tented camps occupy prime locations along the Chobe River, in Kasane or close to the waterholes of Savuti. To help you make this all-important choice, here’s our selection of the best luxury Chobe lodges and camps.

The accommodations below are not ranked in a specific quality order.

269 Chobe Safaris

1. Chobe Game Lodge

Chobe Game Lodge

Occupying one of the most sought-after patches of safari real estate in Botswana, Chobe Game Lodge spreads along the banks of the Chobe River; it’s close enough to Kasane to be convenient, but far enough away to feel like you’re in the wilderness. With more years of experience than any other five-star lodge in the area, Chobe Game Lodge has perfected the art of putting guests in the right place at the right time. Apart from the large and luxurious rooms that are filled with light and color, the lodge offers guided game drives and excursions in solar-powered boats – both will take you to where the animals (elephants, predators and so much more) come down to the water’s edge.

The public areas have gorgeous African masks and statues and colorful throws, you can dine on a deck overlooking the river, and the pool is lovely for those moments when you just need to cool off.

2. Chobe Bakwena Lodge

Chobe Bakwena Lodge

Along the Chobe River in Kasane, Chobe Bakwena Lodge places you in a fine position with all the services and supplies of the city close by, even though you’ll feel a world away by the riverbank. Rooms here have a white linen and wicker chair look, with big windows, supremely comfortable beds, and high thatched ceilings. Enjoy a meal overlooking the river, go for a swim, or nurse a drink as the late afternoon light softens. And then, when it’s time to head out into the peerless wilds of Chobe National Park, you can be surrounded by elephants and lions within minutes of leaving the lodge.

Bakwena Lodge Tours

3. Savute Safari Lodge

Savute Safari Lodge

Now here’s something really special. Deep within Chobe National Park, in the fabulous wildlife country of Savuti, Savute Safari Lodge overlooks a waterhole that draws a relentless procession of elephants. Lion prides and packs of African wild dogs are also common in the area, and you’re perfectly placed for exploring the banks of the Savuti Channel.

Aside from the views, the camp itself consists of stunning public areas, with stylish contemporary decor and open-air everything that lets in the breeze and views of this remarkable place. The rooms follow a similar pattern, with chic earth colors, polished wood floors, and a recurring sense of light and space. Lie in bed at night and listen to elephants at the waterhole, zebras barking in alarm, and lions roaring nearby.

Savute Safari Lodge Tours

4. Ngoma Safari Lodge

Ngoma Safari Lodge

Along a stretch of Chobe riverbank that very few travelers (and certainly none of the day-trippers from Kasane) ever see, Ngoma Safari Lodge is a wonderful place to stay and an ideal base from which to explore. The lodge is handy for the riverfront, for excursions to Savuti and even for a cross-border foray into Namibia. Or you can just stay in camp and enjoy the views, the cooling shade from the property’s many trees, or your large and luxurious room with a private plunge pool. The thatched bungalows are well-spaced and perfectly positioned for you to feel as if this remarkable place is yours alone to enjoy. You’ll also eat well here, and you’re guaranteed a warm welcome.

Ngoma Safari Lodge Tours

5. Muchenje Safari Lodge

Muchenje Safari Lodge

Nicely removed from the clamor of Kasane, Muchenje Safari Lodge has a fabulous position on a rise that looks out over the Chobe River and its floodplains. Everything here has a view, from the swimming pool, restaurant and lounge terrace to most of the rooms. With not many other lodges in the area, you can enjoy quiet game drives with very few other safari vehicles around, or head out onto a quiet stretch of the river for more safari highlights. The tented rooms have private terraces, cooling slate floors and big-sky views. Keep an eye out for elephants crossing the horizon and try and count a million stars at night.

Muchenje Lodge Tours

6. Ghoha Hills Savuti Lodge

Ghoha Hills Savuti Lodge

There’s lots to like about Ghoha Hills Savuti Lodge, but we love it, especially for its location in a prime wildlife area of Savuti, deep inside Chobe, yet nicely removed from other lodges and camps. The accommodations here capture all the romance of being on safari, with big and beautifully decorated safari tents on elevated wooden platforms and fine views of the surrounding area; it’s not unusual for a curious elephant to wander right past your tent flap, or for lions to roar in unison just outside your window. With a swimming pool, lounge, dining area, fire pit and a real open-to-the-wilderness outlook to go with the wildlife and excellent accommodations, Ghoha Hills is a fine choice.

Ghoha Hills Lodge Tours

7. Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero

Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero

As we’ve come to expect from the Sanctuary portfolio of properties, Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero is sophisticated and has rooms that take a contemporary look at the whole safari experience. Rooms are five-star in every way, with space, luxury and designer touches to go with safari mainstays such as thatched roofs and four-poster beds. The secluded position is one of the closest of the Chobe lodges and camps to the park entrance. The property also has an array of swimming pools, delightful gardens, fine service and some of the best meals in the Chobe region. They also know how to pamper you in the spa.

Chobe Chilwero Tours

8. Chobe River Lodge

Chobe River Lodge

Like so many high-end Chobe lodges, Chobe River Lodge lines up along the riverbank in Kasane. Conveniently positioned for both town and for Chobe itself, the lodge can have you out on the river and looking for animals in no time at all. We love the modern decor that makes stylish use of cool concrete walls and floors, as well as contemporary designer furnishings. It has also made fine dining a part of its offering with innovative, seasonal menus. There’s a pool and excellent service too.

9. Zambezi Queen by Mantis

Zambezi Queen by Mantis

Zambezi Queen by Mantis takes the idea of a boat safari to a whole new level. This safari houseboat is like an indulgent mini-cruise, one that will have you passing by one of the prettiest and most wildlife-filled stretches of riverbank in Africa. Every time you open the curtains of your luxury cabin, you’re almost sure to see wildlife on show – an elephant bathing, hippos and crocodiles lurking just below the river’s surface, or lions on the hunt along the shore. The captains here are experts in taking you where other boats don’t go, and with the big windows, ample terraces and views even from the restaurant, you’ll never miss a thing.

Zambezi Queen Tours

10. Chobe Marina Lodge

Chobe Marina Lodge

By the riverbank in Kasane, Chobe Marina Lodge is another unforgettable in-town choice. If you want to head for Chobe, it’s a short drive to the world-famous Chobe Riverfront section of the park, with all the amazing wildlife possibilities that such an excursion brings. If instead you decide to stay at the lodge and relax, you’re also in for a treat, with warm personal service, excellent four-star rooms, river views from the pool, bar and restaurant, and an experience that perfectly combines casual with classy.

Chobe Safari Lodge: Our View

Chobe Safari Lodge is situated on the border of Chobe National Park close to the small town of Kasane, which lies at the northern apex of Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia.  Due to the lodge’s proximity to Chobe National Park, you can have a game viewing experience from your balcony.

The luxury rooms have views across the Chobe River and are spacious and stylishly decorated with air-conditioning, en-suite bath and shower facilities, as well as satellite TV and phone. The chalets offer a more affordable and simple style of accommodation and the campsite is well shaded and situated at the far end of the lodge. Chobe Safari Lodge:  The Details

Although one of the larger accommodation options in Kasane, Chobe Safari Lodge still has, as its name suggests, a safari lodge atmosphere, with large thatched restaurant and bar areas, and its location right on the banks of the Chobe river is stunning.  This property offers excellent value for money, and is a very affordable option for the Chobe area. As it is adjacent to Chobe Bush Lodge, guests at Chobe Safari Lodge are welcome to use all the facilities at the small sister lodge and vice versa.

The inclusions at the lodge vary and will be indicated on individual itineraries. During your stay you will liaise with the booking office to co-ordinate activities which may include game drives in the Chobe National Park and boat cruises on the Chobe River. In addition Chobe Safari Lodge offers optional fishing trips and day trips to Victoria Falls or Livingstone which is 80 km away. The lodge is only 3 km from the airport.

Chobe Safari Lodge is a hit with children of any age.

What our guests say about Dolan

May 31, 2024
An Adventure Of A Lifetime
In planning our South Africa vacation last year, I went online looking for a safari adventure. There were many companies but eventually returned to Safari.Com’s website which offered many itineraries. Luckily, their agent, Dolan quickly contacted me and planned the perfect trip to Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge. I liked his quick responses to my many, many questions. Dolan handled all reservations not only the lodge but hotels, airlines and private transportation. It was an amazing vacation. Our daughter and her family decided on a vacation to South Africa so we are all headed back again this year and Safari.Com and Dolan have again done the planning even our trip insurance. I highly recommend Dolan and Safari.Com for an amazing adventure!

Four rivers safari

Four Rivers Safari

The Four Rivers Safari is one of the top safaris to do in Southern Africa. The safari is a fully inclusive lodge safari in Windhoek, Namibia or Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The safari covers four of the most famous rivers. The Zambezi, Chobe, Kwando and Okavango River will be part of our safari.

We have selected these four rivers as a safari route because of the fantastic sightings along their banks. These four rivers are home to much natural wildlife and birdlife. When the flood season arrives, there is a short period where all these rivers become one.

This safari is conducted in a customized 4X4 safari vehicle with a window seat for each passenger.

We also added excellent adventure activities to the safari: game drives, hikes, and river cruises. We will visit some of the local tribes and learn more about these parts of Africa.

It is a fully-inclusive lodge safari, and all meals and accommodation are included. The 3-star accommodation will soothe your body and mind after every adventure-packed day.

This safari combines all the highlights of the Zambezi region! It’s a genuinely life-changing experience.

CHOBE BUSH LODGE

Chobe Safari Lodge - General

Chobe Safari Lodge are committed to maintaining the highest standards and have renovations scheduled from 8 January 2024, which are due for completion in the third quarter of the year. The dining area, jetty, sunset deck, and block of River Rooms will temporarily close along with reception and the safari shop at Chobe Safari Lodge. However, river cruises and game drives will continue without interruption, and delicious meals, activities, plus shopping are still available at the beautiful Chobe Bush Lodge. Noise levels and building disruptions will be minimal, confined to the furthest eastern wing of the property, away from guest activities and services.

There are plenty to choose from when it comes to food venues. The Terrace Restaurant serves a delicious varied breakfast buffet (English or continental style), as well as sampling indigenous African delicacies. Barbeques, specialist game meats, stir-fries, a selection of mouth-watering vegetarian dishes and Indian cuisine are also on the menu.

The lodge’s Cocktail Bar offers a range of light snacks. Enjoy a refreshing drink as well while you are enjoying the nearby pool facility. The Sedudu Bar, overlooking the Sedudu Island in the Chobe river, is the place to unwind with a sundowner.

Other facilities at the lodge includes an internet cafe, a volleyball and squash court, health and beauty salon, babysitting and a curio and craft shop. Game drives depart three times a day; alternatively, there is an option of booking a full or half-way drive with a picnic lunch. Expert guides lead private cruises throughout the day to suit your individual needs. Fishing for the legendary tiger fish and species of bream provide for an exciting fishing experience. Equipment and a guide is provided.

The Location

Chobe Safari Lodge, located on the banks of the Chobe River in northern Botswana, is the best destination for serious game viewers. Situated in the town of Kasane, the lodge is close to where the borders of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Zambia meet. The Chobe Safari Lodge is the ideal choice of accommodation if you were planning to visit the Chobe area, the majestic Victoria Falls or the Zambezi region (formerly named the Caprivi Strip).

The lodge borders on the Chobe National Park, which is part of the Chobe-Linyati-Kwando- river system. The series of islands, floodplains and lakes ensure an abundance of wildlife. The Park is home to over 80 000 elephants as well as numerous herds of buffalo. In the dry winter season the animals move closer to the Chobe River, so you will be able to view large herds of elephant and buffalo. Other plentiful game include lion, leopard, hippo, crocodile, giraffe, as well as puku, kudu and other antelope.

To celebrate the arrival of the new vehicle and to give you insight into what awaits at Chobe Game Lodge, our team put together a short video for you. Since the introduction of electric safaris, guests have been enjoying a much quieter, more authentic safari & the natural environment benefits from a cleaner operation as the vehicles and boats are CO2 emission-free. From the start of our electric fleet conversion project, we have been closely monitoring the vehicles and boats to understand the impacts of the fleet on both our operating costs and the reduction of carbon emissions.

Testimonials

We travelled with Falcon Safaris in Zimbabwe and Botswana for 16 days. Falcon designed a wonderful trip with private guide to the most interesting sites in both countries. The organization of the whole trip was excellent, flights within the country, accommodation and activites. The guides were very knowledgable and told us a lot about the countries, their history, people, economy and much more.

Dr. Renate Vorwerk

Our Consultant Vimbai was very helpful and accommodating. We stayed at the Elephant hills hotel which was nothing short of amazing. Our activities included a helicopter flight, dinner cruise as well as a morning game drive. All the activities were absolutely amazing.

Our trip consisted of accommodation and tours in Victoria Falls, transfers to Botswana, accommodation and photography safaris there, then transfers back to Zimbabwe. Transfers, accommodation again in Vic Falls. My communication was with Ludwick who was amazing. He went way above and beyond normal service to make me feel confident in the organisation of our trip

David McCann

We worked with Gertrude to schedule and organize everything and she did an excellent job. I asked a lot of questions via e-mail and she answered everyone in a timely helpful manner. Our guide at Victoria Falls was also great. He met us at the airport, provided a thoughtful tour of the Falls and got us to our next guide in Botswana.

Falcon safaris have given my the correct advice with excellent service. The only suggestion will be to work closer with the lodges to confirm bookings as soon as possible. We have booked and pay our deposit a year in advance. We have only receive our final convermation from Chobe Safari lodge a week before departure.

I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon with the elephants. I rode an 8 year old female, her name is not in my head, and it was magical. She loved her treats at the end of the ride and her trainer was a lovely man. We talked the whole hour and he taught me so much about these magical creatures.

Gertrude was always very prompt in replying during the planning process and very helpful with visa information. This trip to Africa was our first and we started with Kenya and a 10 day safari. We wanted to experience water camps and lodges as well so worked with Falcon to make that happen.

myself and my 13yr old daughter used Falcon Safaris for all our outings as well as airport transfers. Canoeing, Devils Pool visit and Elephant back ride. They were all fantastic especially Vimbai and Edna. We had an amazing time and nothing was too much trouble to sort out for us.

The Chobe-Safari-Lodges mission is to inspire and develop conservation and protection of the world’s natural resources found within national parks through education, promotion, and global community awareness.

Hamilton founded Falcon Safaris in 2004 - based on an idea he had whilst working for the Civil Aviation Authority at Harare and Victoria Falls Airports between 1999 and 2002.

Many guests mentioned the difficulty of obtaining good information on Victoria Falls and surrounding attractions - Hamilton saw the growing use of the internet as a way of providing that information and marketing the numerous Lodges & Camps. Starting off as a Travel Consultant for Island Safari, then a day tours and transfers company, he has seen the company grow into a dynamic Team of Destination Experts who are passionate about selling and introducing Africa to the world. The Company has also enabled him to travel and interact extensively throughout the Country visiting most camps and lodges in the region, and he still handles enquiries personally. A holder of a Post Graduate Diploma in Management with The University of Zimbabwe.

Born and raised in Zimbabwe, I spent much of my childhood in Harare and our rural home Chinhoyi. I had a very strong desire from an early age to spread my wings.

I moved to Victoria Falls in 2002 and started off as a Travel Consultant with Trumpet Safaris. In 2004 I joined Falcon Safaris as a travel consultant and the real adventure began! With my first taste of the industry beyond just Victoria Falls it was here that my passion was set alight. I’ve worked in many roles within the company and that has helped appreciate and understand the industry. I love being part of every process and continue to create unforgettable memories to our every client. A holder of an Honors Degree in Business Administration & Management with Solusi University.

This gentleman has been in the Tourism Industry for the past 20 years. After obtaining his Diploma in Travel and Tourism end of the 90s, he started working for an upcoming Tourism venture at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

Even though he enjoyed The Mother City life as a young man, he always wanted to be home. It didn’t take long before he got a job with one leading Tour Operator based in Harare as a Tours Consultant in a ladies only company. After a brief stint in Victoria Falls in early 2000, he returned to Harare but life was never the same. The Tourism Capital of Zimbabwe kept calling and before long he was back in Victoria Falls in 2005. Since then, he worked for Wilderness Safaris in Groups Department, before moving across to Livingstone to start their new Tours and Transfers office. After 2 years of training a local person to take over, he moved back to Wilderness Zimbabwe as Assistant General Manager in 2008. It didn’t take long before he was promoted to General Manager overseeing the Tours and Transfers offices in Victoria Falls, Livingstone and Chobe. He worked with various renowned operators like Thompsons Africa, A&K during that time. Attention to detail has always been his number one asset. In 2013 he felt he was ready to start his own thing and left Wilderness. It did not quite work out as planned and went back into management. He managed a charter company, went back to Wilderness as Camp Manager. He has done all entities you can think of in Tourism industry. His passion for what he does, experience and exposure is what makes him valuable to this company.

A young, confident and motivated individual who based his career in the Tourism industry.

He worked for a famous financial management consultancy firm in Victoria falls Zimbabwe , before pursing his passion in the tourism industry as a financial accountant at Falcon Safaris. His passion is to take the tourism industry to the highest level which will meet clients’ expectations and make them realise value for money. He is self esteemed person who works on a proffessional level.

I am a travel and tours consultant, experienced in coordinating tailor made tours in Southern Africa. Zimbabwe is my home country.

I live in the resort town of Victoria Falls. I have been a hotelier for a long time and also have experience in 5-star bush lodges, therefore I am capable of helping you to select the convenient place for your stay in Victoria Falls. Have travelled into nearly all wonderful places in Zimbabwe. I am highly capable to assist in arranging 5 to 10 days tour of Zimbabwe for a complete satisfaction of the tourism knowledge in Zimbabwe.

I was born and raised in Masvingo a city which is located in the south eastern Zimbabwe close to Great Zimbabwe the national monument from which the country derives its name.

I attained a degree in B. Admin: Public Management at the University of Pretoria in 2008 and I spend a gap year after finishing varsity. After getting married I then moved to Victoria Falls and in 2011 I joined Falcon Safaris. I started off as an Accounts Bookkeeper and it was in 2014 that I discovered that I had a passion for the travel industry which led me to a career move from accounts to the reservations and operations department. I handle clients’ bookings and ensure that they are picked and do everything as per their itinerary. I am a very ambitious and hard-working person who has gained vast experience over the years and I take pride in doing what I love the most. I have been privileged to have visited most parts of the incredible destinations in Zimbabwe with the most recent trip being the Around Zimbabwe trip which saw us visiting Matopos, Masvingo, Gonarezhou, and Eastern Highlands .This has enabled me to generate the vast knowledge and understanding of what each destination has to offer. With this experience I am now well-equipped in advising our travelers and recommend to them the suitable products to them. Ever since then I have never looked back and over the years, I have added Zambia and Botswana to my portfolio and I intent to expand the destinations to include Namibia and South Africa.

From a very young age, I have always dream of travelling and exploring new places and new adventures. I grew up in Harare the heartland of Zimbabwe and later moved to the famous resort town ‘Victoria Falls’ to begin my career.

For four years now, I have found myself doing well in sales and marketing department, helping in planning and selling best, memorable holiday packages to clients. There is nothing exciting as being part of someone’s successful travel experience behind the scene. I am happy to take Africa to the world and bringing world to Africa as I continue to live my dream and do what makes me happy at your pleasure.

I grew up in the capital city Harare, then moved to Victoria Falls in my late twenties. I studied Office Administration but got into tourism by ‘accident’.

Since then I have not looked back. Because of the love of what I do and my passion for the job, I cannot trade it for anything in the world. I do not dream doing anything else apart from creating memories for my clients. I love the outdoors, travelling, meeting new people, learning about new places and reading anything to increase my general knowledge. Favorite place in Zimbabwe: I love the unspoiled Gonarezhou National Park. That view of the Chilojo Cliffs take my breath away. I would go there any time!!

My name is Edna Zemba, l have been attached in Tourism for the past 18 years although with different companies, selling activities to the tourist and boat hostess for 6 years.

I have been with Falcon Safaris since 2009 to date, doing meet and greet from Zambia airport, the borders (Kazungula and Livingstone-Victoria Falls Boarder) and from Victoria Falls International Airport, mostly to plan itineraries for the incoming clients. Finally, I am a mother of 3 boys and I have 4 grandchildren.

I am a holder of tour guide license and a medical certificate. With fourteen years of experience and thirteen years I have been working with Falcon Safaris as a tour guide, driving as my duty.

I have travelled most parts of Zimbabwe touring with many clients on our famous Zimbabwe. Touring places like Hwange National Park, Great Zimbabwe, Matopos, Eastern Highlands to mention but a few. I have been also touring to other countries like Botswana and Zambia. I was born and bred in Chivhu. I arrived in Victoria falls in 2006 and I have been based in Victoria falls since then. I am a Christian, blessed with three kids

I am a holder of Tour Guide license and other valid requirements of my profession. With 15 years of experience, 10 of those I have been with Falcon Safaris with tour guiding, driving as my duties.

I have travelled most parts of Zimbabwe with many clients on our famous Around Zimbabwe Tour, notable place I have been to include Great Zimbabwe, Matopos, Eastern Highland, Gonarezhou, Harare among other place. I was born and grew up in Kariba, arrived in Victoria Falls 2 decades ago and have been based in Victoria Falls since then. Personal life, I am Christian married with 2 kids and on my spare time I enjoy playing football.

My name is Polite Moyo, a holder of Launch Master certificate (Boat License) for the past 15 years and a holder of Learner professional License (Lph) for the past 10 years and also a class (1) driver having obtained the License 20 years ago.

I have been attached to tourism industry for almost 22 years, doing touring around Zimbabwe and beyond countries like Botswana and Zambia to mention a few. I have been with Falcon for 5 good years having been attached to other touring companies. I have also done an extensive guiding in the Stanley & Livingston private game reserve and been to Matetsi Game Reserve, done a lot of guiding in the Victoria Falls and Chamabondo parks respectively. I have also captained a 120-seater boat on the Zambezi river for good number of years. Finally, am father and a parent of 2 lovely children.

The Magic of a River Safari Through Zimbabwe

F rom my seat on the pontoon boat, I squeal in excitement at the splinter of gray I see in the distance. I almost missed it, despite the attempts of my fellow travelers to aim my gaze, but the flapping ears give him away.

Tucked up on the hill, deep in a green cluster of Zambezi teak trees, his telltale wrinkled grey skin and sturdy legs at first seemed like just another tree in the bush. But once those ears flap, there’s no denying the majesty of an African elephant.

From his perch at the front of the boat on the Chobe River , our guide and captain Emmanuel Maruza, doesn’t attempt to mask his own excitement. “Look at that,” he says, mostly to himself as he maneuvers the boat closer to shore. “Amazing. Amazing.”

It is day three of a nine-day unforgettable African river adventure. The ambitious CroisiEurope itinerary takes a maximum of 16 guests across four countries: South Africa , Namibia , Botswana, and Zimbabwe. In each, we spend time on land with the people and animals. But in three of the four, there’s a bonus: time spent cruising the continents’ scenic and vital waterways.

Having the opportunity to explore from both land and water makes booking with CroisiEurope appealing, and it’s the European cruise company’s first foray into Africa. Most luxury African safari operators whisk guests away to a plush lodge and then offer twice-a-day open-jeep safari rollouts into the wild. CroisiEurope’s African Dream itinerary offers a similar lodge stay (it owns two lavish properties on the edge of the Zambezi River where Namibia borders Botswana), but takes it a step further with multiple trips out on water safaris and a three-night stay on one of two intimate houseboats in Zimbabwe. The advantages of exploring the countries by both land and water are almost immediately evident.

On the land tour of Chobe National Park in Botswana, animals are everywhere: Lions lazing in the tall grass on the roadside, giraffes gracefully crossing the savannah, warthogs bumbling past Cape buffalo who seem oblivious to the Oxpeckers on their own backs.

You don’t have to get on the water to see the wildlife. There are more than 50,000 elephants—my favorite wildlife sighting—that freely roam in and out of the fenceless Chobe National Park, alone. But there’s no question that cruising the region’s rivers will amplify the experience.

The rivers and lakes we traverse are calm. Small ripples across the glassy surface and the occasional bubbles around us are reminders that life—crocodiles and hippos mostly—lie beneath. Reeds and mangroves line the shores on the rides out from the lodge, barely moving in the absence of heavy breeze despite the birds nimbly balanced on their tips. And it’s not long before the gentle hum of the motor becomes almost meditative, and our small group settles into a quiet as we watch hippos yawn and grunt from the land and the water in reverent silence.

The animals look different from the water, too. The perspective change means that instead of looking down on them from the height of the jeep, you’re gazing up or across. Kudus seem larger, hippos more foreboding. And you’re encountering them in places that feel almost intimate: Elephants bathing in the shallows of the river amongst a field of water lilies, crocs sunning on the shore and then slithering into the water beneath the boat. You feel smaller on the water. More vulnerable.

It's a feeling that stays with us when we eventually move to CroisiEurope’s luxury houseboat in Zimbabwe. There, we take turns boarding smaller boats, perfect for sundowner cruises, scooting up to reedy mounds to listen to the birds as the sun sets or zigzagging through sun-bleached Mopane trees on afternoon fishing jaunts. And with no other boats in sight, early risers share the morning with the animals as they start their day. I watch hippos shake the sleep off their backs and head back to the water, and elephant moms nurse their babies and meander the short grass just beyond the shore.

The trip is not all slow cruising and shoreline searching. In South Africa, we trace the life of Nelson Mandela through the Apartheid Museum, on Impalila Island in Namibia we walk the villages with a resident guide, and in Zimbabwe we take in the stunning Victoria Falls by foot and helicopter. Emotional moments abound on this trip and adrenaline is in no short supply.

The moments are all incredible in their own right, but for me the highlight remains that first glimpse on day three and the surprise that followed. As it turned out, the elephant I saw wasn’t alone.

The whistle of tree branches being pulled and broken gives them away. Three adult elephants and a few babies come forward toward us. Our boat backs up to give them space, but we remain close enough to hear them slurp and splash as they drink and dip in the water.

When it’s time to go, we erupt in a smattering of giggles and chatter. A shared moment on a trip where magic seems to flow as easily as the waters beneath us.
