Zacatecas is a city and municipality in Mexico, and the capital and largest city of the state of Zacatecas.

It’s located in north-central Mexico and had its start as a Spanish mining camp in the mid-16th century.

Zacatecas was where thousands of local slaves were forced by the Spanish to toil in the mines.

Due to the wealth that the mines provided, Zacatecas became one of the most important cities in the area.

Now, the colonial part of the city is a World Heritage Site, due to the Baroque architecture and other structures built during mining days.

Zacatecas is the colonial city and that the real Mexico begins to emerge.

You can see here real people living real lives.

All of their habits and experience.

Zacatecas isn’t the safest city in Mexico.

Yes, terrorism, not an issue here, but all of many other crimes as robbery, hijacking, and violence are common here.

The index of crime is quite high for the city.

And it increased in the last years.

There are not many tourists here, but if you travel to Zacatecas you should keep in mind: do not rent a luxury car, park only in guarded parking, do not show up on the streets with jewelry, keep your valuables in a safe place, don’t walk late at night.

The U.S. Department of State recommends to visitors stay in defined tourist areas because those are considered safest, however it’s always important to stay vigilant about your surroundings and personal belongings.

Good tourist destination..

My husband and I live in Zacatecas city. It is beautiful City and much less chance being pick-pocketed in San Francisco,CA than here. Of course like any other city there is crime, but there are many, many tourists here. I mean a lot. Everyday there are groups of people from all over the world that come here to relax and see this beautiful city. I hear from all who visit that they like the peacefulness of the city. So you can not say that not many tourists come here. When was the last time you came for a visit? Just don’t go to Fresnillo.

I will be traveling from Laredo TX to Bucerias MX and would like to stay in Zacatecas for a while can you recommend a hotel with secure parking? Thanks

A city of beautiful cathedrals and art museums – a lot of beautiful art! Thirty-seven (37) attractions and sixteen (16) museums – not bad for a place I had never heard of, I had no idea. It’s the capital of a landlocked province. There’s also a lot of history here but that was less interesting to me. We stood in a beautiful hotel with a bullring design, the Quinta Real. There were many steps to climb so you do need a certain level of fitness. You have to speak Spanish (my companion did) and his father was from the province so he appreciated more of the history then I did. We had no problem in terms of crime. It is very conservative and I believe I got in trouble for being sleeveless (it was hard to say as I don’t understand Spanish). It seemed that a woman with her children wanted me kicked out of the restaurant but management refused.

my family often travels to zacatecas yearly, we go to a more smaller town but do go to zacatecas. in terms of going there we have no issues. in terms of crime we’ve never had issues.

Retired here

I retired in Zacatecas after living in Wisconsin my entire life, I love it here! great retirement communities and many former Americans as well. Definitely helps to know Spanish if you come to visit.

I am kind of confused I thought this was a big drug cartel center but idk I guess someone please reply so I can understand better

Zacatecas is one of our favorite historic Mexican cities, a colonial gem crammed with gorgeous old buildings, churches, and museums. It’s setting in a valley between two hills is spectacular, and there are also tours of the old silver mines and a cable car ride high over the rooftops. Wandering its cobbled streets and leafy plazas, it’s easy to feel transported back to classical Spain.

Frequently Asked Questions about Zacatecas

Where is zacatecas.

Zacatecas is a city in the central region of Mexico known as the Bajío and is the capital of the eponymous state of Zacatecas. Zacatecas lies around 600 km northwest of Mexico City, 300 km northeast of Guadalajara, and 560 km southwest of Monterrey.

Non-stop flights to Zacatecas take 1 hour 25 minutes from Mexico City, 2 hours 20 minutes from Dallas, 2 hours 40 minutes from Tijuana, 2 hours 55 minutes from Los Angeles, and 3 hours 50 minutes from Chicago.

How big is Zacatecas?

Zacatecas has a greater metro population of almost 140,000. The city lies on the edge of the Sierra Madre Occidental and covers some 444 square kilometers.

What is the history of Zacatecas?

The indigenous Zacatecos mined silver and precious metals in the hills here long before the arrival of the Spanish, but it didn’t take long for the conquistadors to grasp the area’s potential. The modern city was initially founded as a Spanish mining camp in 1548, with the Zacatecos quickly subdued. For the next three hundred years, the silver mines of Zacatecas enriched the city, Mexico, and the Spanish Empire. During the Mexican Revolution in 1914, Zacatecas was the scene of fierce fighting when Pancho Villa’s División del Norte captured the city, completely annihilating the forces of Victoriano Huerta. Today Zacatecas is flourishing once more, its economy boosted by increasing trade between Mexico and the USA.

How do I get to Zacatecas?

Convenient non-stop flights connect Zacatecas with Chicago, Dallas, and Los Angeles in the US. There are also non-stop flights to Tijuana airport, which is directly accessible from the US border near San Diego. Otherwise, most other flights route through Mexico City (there are no non-stop flights from Canada or Europe).

Zacatecas airport is 27km north of the city center. The only way to get into the center is by taxi; airport taxis charge a fixed rate of around M$400 (ask the hotel to arrange one for the trip back).

Within Mexico, first-class long-distance buses are an economical and comfortable alternative to flying – to Zacatecas, there are frequent long-distance bus services to the cities of northern Mexico, the Bajío, and Mexico City (6–8hr).

Can I use Uber in Zacatecas?

Assuming phones have roaming, and the app works, Uber is available in Zacatecas and can save up to 50 percent on journeys to and from the airport, though drivers may be reluctant to pick-up thanks to hostility from the airport taxi union. Email the hotel for advice on the latest situation. Once in the city itself, there should be no problems using Uber.

Can I drive to Zacatecas?

Driving down to Zacatecas from the US border is relatively straightforward, and plenty of Americans and Canadians take their own vehicles – the main highways are good, and virtually empty outside the cities. However, care should be taken in choosing a route, as the Mexican border states suffer from high levels of drug violence – driving at night should definitely be avoided. Foreign vehicles also need a Mexican “Temporary Importation of Vehicle Permit”, arranged at the border.

From Laredo, Texas the drive is around 422 miles (679 km) and takes around 9 hours non-stop. Zacatecas is 765 miles (1231 km) from El Paso, Texas (15 hours), and 1370 miles (2205 km) from San Diego, California.

Do I need a car in Zacatecas?

Cars are not necessary in Zacatecas. Once in town, it should be able to get around on foot, though taxis (and Uber cars) are easy to find. Meters in regular taxis start at 11 pesos (minimum 25 pesos for rides in the center).

When is the best time to go to Zacatecas?

Zacatecas lies at well over 2000 meters (6562 ft) above sea level, and experiences relatively dry, mild weather year-round. March through May tend to be the best months to visit – sunny, warm, and dry. June through October can be rainy, and winters tend to be cooler. As always, avoid Christmas, Easter, and all major Mexican holidays to avoid the crowds (it’s a popular destination for Mexican domestic tourists).

Where should I stay in Zacatecas?

Aim to stay in the atmospheric center of old Zacatecas, close to all the sights, best restaurants, and attractions. Motel chains have sprung up around the city, near the major highways, and can offer good rates, but these are all a long way from the action and it can be hassle shuttling back and forth.

Some of our favorites places to stay include the lavish but surprisingly affordable Hotel Emporio , the colonial Mesón de Jobito and luxurious Santa Rita del Arte .

For something really special, stay at the Quinta Real , tastefully incorporated what was once Zacatecas’ bullring. The best of the budget accommodation is no-frills Hostel Villa Colonial (Primero de Mayo 201, at Callejón Mono Prieto + 52 492 925 0749)

What are the best things to do in Zacatecas?

Start by simply wandering the cobbled streets and historic colonial plazas of Zacatecas. The city’s gorgeous, pink sandstone cathedral is one of the best examples of Mexican Baroque architecture in the country. Nearby, the old market, Mercado González Ortega, has been converted into a chic shopping mall. As befits such a historic city, Zacatecas is also crammed with absorbing museums. The Museo Pedro Coronel (Plazuela de Santo Domingo) showcases the modern, abstract, and Catalan art collected by local artist Pedro Coronel (including work by Picasso and Miró). Pedro’s brother Rafael founded his own beautiful museum, the Museo Rafael Coronel (Callejón de San Francisco 65), set in an old Franciscan mission and built around a vast collection of traditional masks.

The Museo Zacatecano (Dr. Ignacio Hierro 307), housed in the old mint, chronicles the history of the region, while the Museo de Arte Abstracto Manuel Felguérez (Cristóbal Colón) displays the abstract paintings and sculpture of local artist Manuel Felguérez, inside a converted prison. The Museo Francisco Goitia (Enrique Estrada 102) highlights the work of yet another Zacatecan artist, Francisco Goitia.

The mining history of Zacatecas is the focus at the fascinating Mina El Edén , where guided tours take you deep inside the city’s old silver mine.

Once done with the city sights, take the Teleférico (cable car) up to the Cerro de la Bufa, the huge rock that dominates the city, for spectacular views and the Museo de la Toma de Zacatecas, which recounts Pancho Villa’s desperate attack in 1914. There’s also a decent zipline up here, Tirolesa 840 .

What are the best things to do around Zacatecas?

Zacatecas makes a good base to explore the surrounding area. Highlights include the traditional silversmiths at the Centro Platero de Zacatecas and the ornately decorated church in neighboring Guadalupe, the ruins of the great Mesoamerican fortress at La Quemada (56 km south of Zacatecas), and the picturesque town of Jerez (53 km west of Zacatecas). Buses link all these sites with the city, though it’s best to take a guided tour to visit La Quemada (easily arranged at the hotel).

travel to zacatecas mexico

What are the restaurants like in Zacatecas?

Zacatecas restaurants are good – primarily Mexican food, though standard American dishes (burgers and the like) and Italian food are widely available. The local specialties include “asado de boda” (braised pork with chocolate and orange zest), and anything “zacatecano”, usually involving a sauce of poblano chilies and cream. We love Acrópolis , an old-world café with its own impressive art collection, and cozy Dorados de Villa (on Plazuela de García), which knocks out excellent moles and enchiladas. The best place for a relaxing coffee (and free wi-fi) is Il San Patrizio Caffé (Hidalgo 403). For a splurge, book a table overlooking the old bullring at La Plaza , in the Quinta Real hotel.

What currency is used in Zacatecas?

The Mexican peso (often prefixed with a “$” sign) is the currency of Mexico and Zacatecas. Most major shops and restaurants in Zacatecas accept credit cards, but it is a good idea to have some peso cash on hand for entry fees and small purchases like bottled water and snacks. ATMs are easy to find in central Zacatecas – and generally get a better exchange rate here or inside banks than at currency exchange booths.

Is Zacatecas expensive?

Zacatecas is not expensive. Hotels in Zacatecas are reasonably priced given their quality, and eating out is rarely expensive. Transportation is inexpensive and fees to enter museums are low, typically one or two US dollars equivalent (tours of the mine and trips on the cable car are closer to US$5).

Is Zacatecas safe?

Zacatecas has generally avoided the drug violence that has affected other parts of Mexico making it a safe destination to visit. US State Department travel warnings generally apply to the western part of the state of Zacatecas (south of Highway 45 and west of Highway 23) and not the city itself. Take the usual precautions, especially at night, and keep valuables in room safes.

Zacatecas Cathedral and Mountain View

Discover Zacatecas

Zacatecas is one of a group of old Silver Mining cities, which includes San Miguel de Allende , Queretaro , Guanajuato ,  San Luis Potosi and Alamos . You can discover all these places with Mexperience.

These cities all lie north-west of Mexico City . Each has its own unique character, features and atmosphere – but together they make up some of Mexico’s most authentic inland travel experiences. These cities are friendly places; the areas are not overwhelmed with tourists as some of the coastal areas can be.

It’s in the country’s colonial cities that the real Mexico begins to emerge. You’ll see real people living real lives; experience magnificent scenery; stay at wonderful colonial hotels that offer terrific value for money; savor local foods and flavors as colorful and diverse as the cultures that created them.

The road network in this region is well developed, and traveling through it is fast and efficient in most places. These cities are safe: crime is low and it’s a great region to consider if you want to treat your family to a real cultural experience in Mexico.

Zacatecas, like Guanajuato, built its wealth in the hey-days of the region’s mining boom. Geographically, it’s on the edge of the quintet of central mining cities, and if you take the cable car to the top of the mountain (see Key Attractions), you’ll be able to look out across the desert and see just how much of a frontier-city Zacatecas was at the height of its industrial prosperity.

The architecture here is immensely attractive—the pink limestone used in its buildings gave the city the nickname Ciudad Rosad a (the Pink City). Take time to look at the intricately-designed stone and iron works which has been invested into the colonial buildings. Many of the major buildings here took years to complete, because their sponsors and creators were determined to craft and leave something special behind them—and they succeeded in doing so.

Like some of the other colonial gems in Mexico, Zacatecas is not well known among the mass of tourist and traveling communities that visit the country. You won’t find much English spoken here, although local people, restaurants, and hotels will be obliging, helpful, and friendly with any needs you may have.

There are lots of attractions worth seeing in Zacatecas; some historical, some cultural, and some scenic. What you’ll experience in Zacatecas is a genuine city with warm and friendly people amidst a community that is proud of its history and heritage.

Choosing to explore Zacatecas you’ll enjoy a real Mexican experience; there is no tourist make-up here: what you’ll witness is a wonderful colonial city, exhibiting its old-world charms and elegance alongside modern-day Mexican culture.

This is a great place to spend a day—or a long weekend. Stay for the evenings as the temperature cools, the city lights up, and the atmosphere changes. Whether you’re traveling independently or with a family, you’ll find Zacatecas is well worth the few extra miles of road it takes to arrive here.

Key Attractions

Colonial center.

The Plaza de Armas (main square) is also host to the city’s cathedral, with its magnificent stone facade. You’ll also find the Palacio de Gobierno (Government Palace) building here, as well as the Residencia de Gobernadores (Governor’s Residence) and Palacio de la Mala Noche (Palace of the Bad Night), also known as the Palacio de Justicia (Palace of Justice).

The Mercado Gonzalez Ortega , previously the main marketplace in Zacatecas, has now been renovated into a modern up-market shopping center. You can also eat here at one of the several restaurants integrated within the building.

There’s an old Silver mine, called Mina El Eden , which is located inside the Cerro del Grillo , a major attraction of the city and an important historical landmark. There were originally seven levels in this mine; level four is open to visitors, and a train ride will take you deep into the hill which hosted it. The train stops inside, and you are guided down walkways deep into the mines, where you’ll begin to see the conditions that mind workers of the day endured to get gold, silver, iron, copper and zinc out of these rocks.

Cerro de La Bufa is the imposing mountain on the northeast side of the city. It’s up here that you’ll see magnificent views across the city, and further north, the vast expanse of arid desert that streams out from this ‘frontier capital’. To get to the top, you can drive there, but it’s best to take the Cable Car ( Teleferico ) which will transport you across a magnificent view of the city to the top of the mountain in just a few minutes. The Teleferico station is near the mine, so both are within easy access of each other.

Museums and Art in Zacatecas

There are various museums to visit in Zacatecas.

Museo Rafael Corone l hosts what is probably the largest display of traditional masks in Mexico (over 2,000 of them).

Museo Francisco Goita gives you the opportunity to view the works of six major artists of the 20th century who were from Zacatecas, including works of Francisco Goita himself.

Museo de Pedro Colonel is regarded as one of Mexico’s best art museums outside of Mexico City. Pedro Colonel, an affluent artist in Zacatecas, left his entire works and collection of art from around the world to his native city. Besides his own work, art from places as far away as Africa and New Guinea may be enjoyed here.

Getting There & Around

By Air – You can fly to Zacatecas from the US and and other points in Mexico including Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, and Tijuana. The airport is about 18 miles outside the city on the north side; ground transportation into the city is available; buy your tickets from the airport’s terminal building. You can choose between a private taxi (most expensive) and a shared suburban van which carries about 10 passengers and their luggage comfortably. For detailed information about flights and flying, see the Mexperience guide to Air Travel in Mexico .

By Bus – You can travel to Zacatecas on a luxury bus from Mexico City – as well as Queretaro, Aguascalientes, Guadalajara, and other places in the region too. For detailed information about bus transportation read the Mexperience guide to Bus Travel in Mexico .

By Car – Driving to Zacatecas is very fast and efficient with high-speed and safe toll roads connecting to the city. From the south, you’ll need Highway 45D, and from the Northeast you’ll need Highway 54. See additional information about Driving in Mexico and Mexico’s Toll Roads on Mexperience.

Car Rental – To explore Mexico’s colonial towns and cities, consider renting a car for your visit. Having your own car will give you more flexibility than using public transport options and, in some cases, offer you access to places which are otherwise difficult to visit without the use of a car. Read our guide to Car Rental in Mexico to learn what you need to know about car rental in Mexico.

Taxis – Taxis in most of Mexico’s colonial towns and cities are not metered, so agree your price before you get in. Taxi travel is very affordable in Mexico, in comparison to the USA, Canada and Europe, and so provides a viable means of public transportation in Mexico. Your hotel can arrange taxis for you; some post their rates on a board in the lobby; taxi hotel rates are usually higher than cabs you hail off the street. If you speak Spanish , you will have a distinct advantage and be able to negotiate a price with the driver. For detailed information, read the Mexperience guide to Taxi Travel in Mexico .

Zacatecas Essentials

Telephone: Connect to the guide about Communications in Mexico on Mexperience for detailed information about keeping in touch and the latest table of national dialing codes.

Exchanging Currency: Banks with ATM machines are found throughout the downtown area of Zacatecas, especially around the main plaza. During business hours, they and the local Casas de Cambio will buy travelers checks and cash from you as well. For detailed information about exchanging and managing your money, read the Mexperience guide to Money in Mexico .

Travel Insurance: We recommend that you are adequately covered with travel medical insurance and/or travel assistance insurance when you are visiting Mexico. Read the Mexperience guide to Travel Insurance in Mexico for full details and links to specialist insurance suppliers.

Internet Access: Internet cafes can be easily found in towns and cities across Mexico and WiFi is increasingly commonplace—from cafes, shops, hotels, and some cities even offer free WiFi in defined public spaces.

Easter Week and September: If your travel plans involve staying in Zacatecas during the festival dates (see Local Events Calendar, above), then be sure to book early. Hotel rooms become scarce or unobtainable during these times, and many travelers who make an 11th-hour decision to attend the celebrations, often find themselves having to stay at hotels in towns and cities away from Zacatecas, which means they have to drive in and out each day.

What to Buy in Zacatecas

There are several good places in Zacatecas where you can buy a selection of authentic Mexican arts and crafts. Silver jewelry and silver craft-ware is also a major feature of a shopping experience in Zacatecas. Some silverware is crafted locally and you’ll find silver items here are good value for money.

Local Climate

Zacatecas enjoys year-round, generally warm and dry weather during the daytime. The climate is ideal for taking part in a variety of outdoor sports and activities and for taking in the local culture, architecture and scenery. The rain season runs from May thru October: summer storms tend to be fierce and brief in the late afternoon. Remember that you are out in the desert here: the combination of its remoteness and altitude means that mornings and evenings can be cold, especially in the winter months, so pack warm clothing layers in addition to lighter clothes for warmer daytime temperatures.

Top 5 airlines flying to zacatecas.

A regional sized plane was used for a cross country flight with no overhead bin space. I had to "pink check" my laptop and my medications. I was NOT pleased!!!!

Absolutely nothing flight was cancelled and delayed for 2 days. Barely a heads up I want a full refund

The plane from SNA wouldn’t start after 5 tries. The team gave me an option of flying direct from LAX and giving me a Lyft ride there! Perfect!

Best airline! Always friendly and welcoming. Skyclub was great and loved the fast free wifi on board. I also love that you can pre-order your meal on the app!

Atlanta boarding crew at gate were filled with arrogance and were disrespectful. In flight crew showed indifference to the needs of passengers. This is about the flight from ATL to BDL.

The plane was FREEZING SEATS UNCOMFORTABLE Otherwise smooth Thank you

Boarding was chaotic. I didn’t finish dinner because I went to bed early. Breakfast omelet was overcooked and tasteless but croissant was better than usual. Plane was dirty—crumbs in every seam and lavatory was poorly maintained (paint peeling, etc.) and toilet paper had not been refreshed before takeoff. No cubby for storage in first and seat was narrow.

Boarding was somewhat chaotic. Unable to evaluate crew or food/drink because captain kept them seated due to turbulence. Have no idea if entertainment was offered.

West Jet has a horrible boarding process and the seats have no cushion.

Everything went smoothly. I didn’t like that when I booked in the main cabin my wife and I weren’t seated together. One would think when booking on an option that allows picking your seat. They would put you and your travel partner together. Had to call to get it sorted. They did fix.

The plane was so outdated, that it made it uncomfortable. The temperature was hot during the whole flight

Happy attentive flight crew. All in all good flight the night flight works well. Getting into Mexico City early so you don't get caught up it all the immigration and custom ques, additionally, this helps when exiting the airport and crossing the city to your final destination. All works very well and would do it again

Some entertainment and food/snack service would have been nice

All the pessengers should be wait in a line útil the creo and piloto are arrived.

Planes seat could be bigger very uncomfortable for tall humans.

Atraso de dos horas y media con vuelos sobre vendidos

Great airplane The confort was within the high standards. My only little problem was That all the movies ( only 3) was on Spanish, even though I was selecting the audio on English it didn't happen. After that I highly recommend aeromexico

1 hour waiting for suitcases to come out traveling in business class and food in business class is a sandwich? Avoid Aeromexico .

Aeromexico es siempre una buena opción, relación precio calidad adecuada!

Business class was economy with a table in the middle seat. That is worse than economy. No food and no entertainment. Very poor representation.

Tray table was filthy when I sat down. I needed to have someone come clean it because there was food and stains on it WiFi didn’t work after paying for in flight WiFi Food was terrible and was not filling at all Chicken was rubbery Flight attendant had an attitude, interrupted me and wasn’t able to answer basic questions about the food selection such as “does the chicken have red sauce in it”. If your flight attendants are not going to know what is in the meals so we can make an educated decision based on dietary restrictions, they shouldn’t be on the plane. My 1.5 year old niece was sleeping and dropped her binkie. I went on the ground under the chairs looking for it. It was at that time that she came up to me as I’m CLEARLY on all 4s with a flashlight and said “I need to get by”. I said one moment please I’m getting something from under the seat (while my head was literally under the seat). Her reply was “no you need to move now” and proceeded to almost push me out of the way. I looked up and all I saw was her toes under my eyes. When I looked in front of me, her private parts were inches away from my face. I then made a comment “you couldn’t waited 2 seconds?” and her response was, “no I need to use the bathroom”. I understand that and would never want to be the reason someone couldn’t get to the bathroom but I was under the seat. She could’ve gone around the other way instead of harassing me, basically placing her private parts on my head and borderline pushing me out of the way. You don’t pay (especially this much) for this deplorable experience. This was by far the worst experience I have ever had on American. I will be absolutely thinking twice and thrice about flying American Airlines again. I would rather pay more to fly delta because at least I know their WiFi will work and their flight attendants won’t have a terrible attitude for no reason, nor will they act the way this woman did. Unacceptable.

Liked - nothing. Disliked - delayed 35+ min sitting on the plane. Caused me to miss my connection in Charlotte. American Airlines is the worst US Air Carrier company with atrocious customer service.

Worst situation ever! I booked my tickets for this trip on Alaska Airlines. I guess AA is a partner and we flew nonstop from Eugene to PHX on an AA jet. I had to pay for luggage from PHX to EUG. And this was an Alaska Airlines reservation paid for with Alaska airlines credit card! Got to the PHX airport and was not able to check bags because of some weird issue with the AA software. My reservation had to be the-entered by the agent. I will never pick another American Airlines flight on the Alaska Airlines website. While on vacation, I tried to upgrade our seats for the trip home. The request just buffered and never went through. I tried four times and was charged four times on my credit card. The card was charged but the seats were never changed. What a wreck!

Left from gate 30 minutes before flight. Never been late to a flight ever. It says 15 minutes before explicitly on the ticket.

I like the boarding process, it was fast. The seat doesn’t have a TV for a long flight and food wasn’t served, just snacks.

Use planes with TVs on flights over 4 hours. The free entertainment was a cheap in between solution for a very long flight that you don't even bother providing meals or decent snacks.

Even though we left CMI late, we mostly made up the time.

Delayed almost 4 hours for a 45 minute flight with no explanation.

Again, multiple delays and I eventually just canceled and drove!

They need to have enough immigration forms for every one. They should offer free water to everyone, unless some one needs bottled water

Delayed 6 hours! finally able to board, then had to wait 45 minutes for the plane to fill up. Mid flight when food service started, they had nothing to offer with the exception of chips and cookies. Worst flight ever!

The priority seat are great especially the first row! Crew was very cordial and helpful, airplane efficient, the departure and arrival was on time.

I had a flight before this one and I was able to get to the plane, the doors were open and they didn’t let me in. It was still 15 min before departure and the plane was there with the doors open and the hall as well and I went all the way there and they didn’t let me in. Then they tried selling me another flight 4 times more expensive than what the original cost and with a 7 hour layover in a different state when my flight was direct and cheaper. Very disappointed, specially with their 0 flexibility when it comes to travelers with multiple connections.

They not allowed to bord flight, arguing that was cancelled the flight reservation. No chance to find and explain answers, very bad treated by Airline staff… At the end we buying a flight ticket with Aeromexico. Is a low Price Flight Company (cheap), as it is cheap treatment for customers… seme with Kiwi .com app. With we did our reservation. with KAYAK.com never get this kind of treatment.

It is ridiculous that electronic checkin for under age kids can be done and need to be done over the counter. Having said so, we were requested to do the single line for this as if we never did any checkin or made services for this to happen fast. Just ridiculous. Flight delayed as it is the regular business for this airline.

an absolute joke. couldn’t even board because they sold our tickets out from underneath us. we had tickets in hand with assigned seats and they still denied boarding at the gate. i’m sure you guys won’t follow up or do anything so merry christmas.

Flight was on time Flight attendants should be kind and empathetic

Viva continues to strive for the worst airline experience ever.

Overall good flight. The flight attendants were annoying and unfriendly. They would ask me to grab someone else’s trash can just waiting until the person woke up or after the flight is done. It’s not my job to pick up someone else’s trash. Especially when it’s not easily reachable.

The WiFi tv wasn’t working. The flight was over sold and moved several times. The gate assignment appeared on the screens right as we were supposed to board. Because of the flight being over sold we were almost stuck in Cancun for a couple of a days. The flight attendants were unfriendly and would wake you up to pick up other people’s trash.

The reason we chose Volaris to fly from LAX to Mazatlan, Mexico was because of the DATES and TIMES for the NON-STOP flights. When those flights got Totally Changed that was UNACCEPTABLE ! ! ! Also, when my husband Died unexpectedly, the Only statement that Customer Service kept repeating was "they would only offer Credit on a future flight". REALLY?! Volaris was only going to offer CREDIT on another flight to a DEAD PERSON ! ! !

Service of the person who gave us the boarding pass

Overall good but we had a minor scare when a wind shear caused the plane to re take off on the first landing attempt. The crew handled it well and we landed safely on the second attempt

It was unfortunate that I paid more than $120 one way to carry on my luggage to only have to have them checked baggage. We board the flight and there’s a lot of overhead space. They checked our bags in Group 2 but Group 3 was able to board with their luggage. I would not fly Volaris again. The flight attendance on the plane was very nice but the employees at the gate prior to boarding was very rude.

For the price, you pretty much can't beat this airlines. As far as comfort, you could do a lot better, but it'll cost you. Over all cheapest way to get from point A to point B.

To many extra fees, poor customer service and very uncomfortable flight. No leg room and seat wont recline.

I am disabled and was unable to get any assistance from Volaris. I had to wait in line at front desk for 45 minutes, I am by myself, and unable to stand. When I got to front desk check in, they had no assistance for me. I did however, have wheelchair assistance when I arrived in Mexico City. Thank God for that!

It was horrible, our flight back was overbooked and had to take a flight 12hours later in the day but to LAX. Volaris is horrible.

6 Amazing Things To Do In Beautiful Zacatecas, Mexico

travel to zacatecas mexico

  • Mexico and Caribbean

On an unusually warm day in mid-November, I paused to rest on a traffic island in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Zacatecas.

La Fuente de los Faroles (“the Fountain of Lanterns”) served as the island’s centerpiece and attracted visitors and patrons of the local businesses, who used the landmark as a photo background. Its ornate lanterns point in each direction and serve as an ideal prop. Passersby used the slow pace of the vehicles to walk through the gaps in traffic, ignoring the lights on the opposite corners. Other people converged in the various shops that lined the streets around me.

The area around the fountain attracts attention with its distinctive use of yellow earth tones, a wide palette of browns, and rose quartz. Lanterns with wrought-iron fittings are attached to numerous buildings and are switched on in the evening to create a warm candlelight glow. Streets made of cobblestone resemble similar streets in the small medieval towns in Spain or Tuscany.

Origins Of Zacatecas

When I arrived, I did not know of the Indigenous, Spanish, and African people who all shared space as ladrinos (an outdated Castilian Spanish term for citizens) of what would become Zacatecas — “where there is abundant grass.”

Before the Spanish conquest, the area was inhabited mostly by the Indigenous Zacateco, Guachichil, and Caxcan peoples. The land rich in silver, it had been a longtime mining site.

In 1546, Zacatecas was reached by Spaniards, who met with Indigenous people and found the various silver lodes. Various Spanish groups settled in communities to find wealth and build societies based around life in the mines. King Philip II of Spain declared it an official Spanish city in 1585.

During Zacatecas’s formative years, both Castilian and Indigenous languages were used in everyday life as the various groups intermarried, including enslaved Africans who were forced to work in the mines. As all the groups gradually settled down, families grew by using their acquired or collective wealth to purchase plots in the mines. Even Indigenous women owned plots while tending to blood relatives or abandoned children.

Eventually, Zacatecas developed and consolidated the various surrounding communities. Today, it is the capital of the Mexican state of Zacatecas.

Due to the present-day layout of the town, it is fairly walkable with a few inclined passageways to upper or lower streets. The best part of the city is that these passageways lead to plazas with interesting finds.

Using Fuente de los Faroles as a starting point, head west on Tacuba (which starts at the fountain), and on you will find:

1. Plazuela Goitia

This plaza is flanked by the Mercado Jesús Gonzalez Ortega, which in the 19 th century was the main market. You will find various shops with goods such as clothing, books, and local wines. You will also find a visitors booth offering maps and advice at the main entrance. The Tacuba side offers a great view of the street below. If you have not eaten yet, the Acropolis Café is an ideal place for coffee and a light breakfast.

On the other side of the plazuela is the Neo-Renaissance–style Teatro Fernando Calderón. Completed in 1897, the theater has had various uses, ranging from a political soapbox to cockfights.

The plaza is best visited at night when locals gather there for entertainment ranging from American rock cover bands to opera. Numerous vendors offer inexpensive fare, while bars sit parallel to the mercado. If you are looking for a taste of the United States, head to the Bar Elvis Rock & Roll around the corner for a consistent calendar of rock acts.

Cathedral Basilica of Zacatecas, Plaza de Armas, Mexico.

2. Plaza De Armas

Continue west on Tacuba — or if you decide to cross the Plazuela Goitia, continue west on Avenida Hidalgo — where you will find the Cathedral Basilica of Zacatecas.

Built in stages throughout the 18 th and early 19 th centuries with donations of various mine owners, the current cathedral replaced earlier churches.

As the centerpiece of the city, the cathedral’s floor plan is a Latin cross, and its design is Baroque with vaulted roofs and Tuscan influences. Most visitors pop in to take a quick photo and leave. I recommend wandering around to admire the effort put into its construction.

Next door is the Palacio de Gobierno, where numerous governors lived until the 19 th century. Today, it is a government building. On occasion, you will find a press conference taking place in front of this building — or you’ll find a holiday display, depending on the season. Inside is a mural of the history of Zacatecas. You will also find the Residencia de Gobernadores, which was also used as the governor’s home until the mid-20 th century.

Across the street is the Palacio de la Mala Noche (“Palace of the Sleepless Night/Bad Night”), one of many buildings constructed for the wealthy mine owners.

Parroquia De Santo Domingo, Zacatecas, Mexico.

3. Parroquia De Santo Domingo

Head north on the inclined passageway of De Veyna, then take a left. You will be staring at one of my favorite landmarks: the Parroquia de Santo Domingo, built in the late 1740s. It is now a Dominican church and convent after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. Next to the church, you will find the Museo Pedro Coronel, which houses collected arts.

If by this time you are in the mood for some local cuisine, stop by Brick , or continue down the same street and stop at Santino Pizza to try one of their micheladas, a Mexican cocktail I could not get enough of.

Mina El Edén exhibit, Zacatecas, Mexico.

4. Mina El Edén

A 9-minute inclined walk from Santo Domingo, you will cross residential neighborhoods during your journey to Mina El Edén — a mine (now museum) that was established in the 1500s and operated well into the 20 th century. Take Aquiles Serdan to its endpoint, then to De Ramos, which will stop at Del Grillo. From there, take a right to find the entrance to Mina El Edén. If you are parched, there is also a small shop here that sells beverages.

Pro Tip: If you are not in the mood to tackle the incline on foot, you can take a local taxi.

Learn about Zacatecas’s history and the experiences of the various people who worked in the mines via a mix of mine cars and walking paths. Various stations highlight the people who often gave their life or health to the mines. Personally, one of the most striking images was of the children who worked the mines, carrying off rocks with very little clothing and no shoes.

Toward the end of the tour, the guide will ask where you would like to exit, either at your origin point or the secondary entrance. I recommend returning to your origin point.

Teleférico de Zacatecas, Zacatecas, Mexico.

5. Teleférico De Zacatecas/El Cerro De La Bufa

If you did not notice them upon your arrival, look for the signs pointing in the direction of the Teleférico. There will be a few local vendors selling items along the path. My favorite is the final shop selling Zacatecan mezcal, which locals proclaim is the best type.

The oldest cable car in Mexico allows you to see all of Zacatecas from overhead. Undoubtedly you will have noticed it passing in the distance throughout your journey, and now you get to experience it yourself.

Once you are up there, you will get a better idea of how the city developed over the centuries, as you can see the various churches that once formed the centers of various smaller communities.

On the other side is El Cerro de la Bufa, bufa meaning “pig’s bladder” in Aragonese. From this hill, you get great views of the city; and for the adventurous, a zip line goes to an adjacent hill. Various statues of national heroes dot the hill, and a hiking trail will take you further up for better views. The Shrine of Our Lady of Patronage, with its gorgeous courtyard, is also worth a visit.

Gun display at Museo Toma de Zacatecas.

6. Extra Stops In Zacatecas

History lovers should stop at the Museo Toma de Zacatecas to learn about the Battle of Zacatecas (1914) . Inside, you can view the various weapons, battle strategies, and a virtual Pancho Villa who will detail the city’s importance in winning the Mexican Revolution. Fun fact: Antonio Aguilar performs a great ranchero song recounting the battle ( La Toma de Zacatecas ).

Iglesia San Agustin is another worthwhile visit. It harkens back to the Reform Wars (1858–1860) . Another favorite is the Museo la Casa del Inquisidor, which details the various devices used during the Spanish Inquisition.

The Acueducto de Zacatecas, Jardín Independencia, and the Museo Francisco Goitia are all stops to add to your list if you have interests in art and architecture.

Pro Tips: Exploration out of town leads to Guadalupe, which has its own vibe distinct from Zacatecas. Their local market is fun to explore as well as its green spaces. And La Quemada (or Chicomóztoc) in nearby Villanueva is an archeological site that dives deep into the pre-Hispanic civilization of Central Mexico.

The Secret Of Zacatecas

Although Zacatecas is a small city, time is best spent simply wandering its streets and locales. The most memorable part of my time in “where there is abundant grass” were the people, drinks, and foods shared by the vecinos , or neighbors, in the various neighborhoods.

The bad jokes and stories over drinks at Cervecera Madre Liebre . The views of the Sierra Madre from the balcony of Rockabilly Burgers after the sun has set and the street lights have been turned on.

Late-night fatties at Gorditas Doña Julia , the grilled and buttered maize from street vendors at Plazuelta Goitia, and the topped burgers from the vendor behind La Fuente de los Faroles. All became go-to stops along my route back to my hotel after the day’s adventure was done.

Zacatecas draws you in with its European aesthetic and leaves you with the feeling that you’ve uncovered a secret place that most travelers overlook.
