People online couldn’t get enough of Sparks and Brown’s melodic magic either.

"I remember one summer in NYC, my friends and I were in her apt with no ac, hot and miserable and just broke out singing this song," wrote author Dzung Lewis  under the comments section of Instagram. "Random but it was the best summer and this song will always bring me back there."

"Y’all better sang!!!" commented actress Yvette Nicole Brown.

Featured on Sparks' platinum, self-titled debut album, "No Air" was released in 2007 and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The song also earned Sparks and Brown a Grammy nomination for best pop collaboration with vocals at the 51st annual Grammy Awards in 2009.

Brown's popularity took a turn in February 2009 following his assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna . He pleaded guilty to two felony counts stemming from the altercation and was sentenced to 180 days of community labor and five years of probation.

In an interview with CNN in 2011, Sparks opened up about her willingness to work with Brown again despite the controversy surrounding him.

"I know people are very critical, but I think he's really trying and he's getting there. He's doing things that he says he's going to do," Sparks said. "I think everyone deserves second chances. I'd love to work with him again."

Sparks, daughter of NFL veteran Phillippi Sparks, rose to stardom as a teen hopeful on "American Idol," winning the sixth season of the reality singing competition at 17.

Her latest album, "Cider & Hennessy," was released in November 2020.

Putin offers truce if Ukraine exits Russian-claimed areas and drops NATO bid. Kyiv rejects it

Russian President Vladimir Putin promised Friday to “immediately” order a cease-fire in Ukraine and start negotiations if Kyiv began withdrawing troops from the four regions annexed by Moscow in 2022 and renounced plans to join NATO. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected what he called an ultimatum by Putin to surrender more territory.

Putin’s remarks came as Switzerland prepared to host scores of world leaders — but not from Moscow — this weekend to try to map out first steps toward peace in Ukraine.

They also coincided with a meeting of leaders of the Group of Seven leading industrialized nations in Italy and after the U.S. and Ukraine this week signed a 10-year security agreement that Russian officials, including Putin, denounced as “null and void.”

Putin blasted the Switzerland conference as “just another ploy to divert everyone’s attention, reverse the cause and effect of the Ukrainian crisis (and) set the discussion on the wrong track.”

His demands came in a speech at the Russian Foreign Ministry and was aimed at what he called a “final resolution” of the conflict rather than “freezing it,” and stressed the Kremlin is “ready to start negotiations without delay.”

Broader demands for peace that Putin listed included Ukraine’s recognition of Crimea as part of Russia, keeping the country’s nonnuclear status, restricting its military force and protecting the interests of the Russian-speaking population. All of these should be part of “fundamental international agreements,” and all Western sanctions against Russia should be lifted, Putin said.

“We’re urging to turn this tragic page of history and to begin restoring, step-by-step, the unity between Russia and Ukraine and in Europe in general,” he said.

Putin’s remarks, made to a group of somber Foreign Ministry officials and some senior lawmakers, represented a rare occasion in which he clearly laid out his conditions for ending the war in Ukraine, but it didn’t include any new demands. The Kremlin has said before that Kyiv should recognize its territorial gains and drop its bid to join NATO.

Zelenskyy, in Italy for the G7 meeting, said Putin’s proposal was not new and was in the form of an “ultimatum,” comparing it to actions by Adolf Hitler in seizing territory that led to World War II.

“What Putin demands is to give them a part of our territories, those occupied and not occupied, talking about several regions of our country,” he said.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry called Putin’s plan “manipulative,” “absurd” and designed to “mislead the international community, undermine diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a just peace, and split the unity of the world majority around the goals and principles of the U.N. Charter.”

Besides seeking to join NATO, Ukraine wants Russian forces out of its territory, including the Crimean Peninsula that was illegally annexed in 2014; the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity; and that Russia be held accountable for war crimes and for Moscow to pay reparations to Kyiv.

Russia launched its a full-scale invasion in February 2022. After Ukrainian forces thwarted a Russian drive to the capital, much of the fighting has focused in the south and east, where Moscow illegally annexed four regions, although it doesn’t fully control any of them.

Zelenskyy adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said on social media there was nothing new from Putin and that the Russian leader “voiced only the ‘standard aggressor’s set,’ which has been heard many times already.”

“There is no novelty in this, no real peace proposals and no desire to end the war. But there is a desire not to pay for this war and to continue it in new formats. It’s all a complete sham,” Podolyak wrote on X.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said at NATO headquarters in Brussels that Putin “has illegally occupied sovereign Ukrainian territory. He is not in any position to dictate to Ukraine what they must do to bring about a peace.”

Austin added that Putin “started this war with no provocation. He could end it today if he chose to do that.”

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg added that “this is not a peace proposal. This is a proposal of more aggression, more occupation, and it demonstrates in a way that that Russia’s aim is to control Ukraine.”

Putin insisted that Kyiv should withdraw from all four annexed regions entirely and essentially cede them to Moscow within their administrative borders. In Zaporizhzhia in the southeast, Russia still doesn’t control the region’s administrative capital with a pre-war population of about 700,000; in the neighboring Kherson region, Moscow withdrew from its biggest city and capital of the same name in November 2022.

Putin said if “Kyiv and Western capitals” reject his offer, “it is their business, their political and moral responsibility for continuing the bloodshed.”

The Kremlin has repeatedly aired its readiness for peace talks with Kyiv and blamed the West for undermining its efforts to end the conflict.

Putin went further Friday and claimed his troops never intended to storm Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, even though they approached the city.

“In essence, it was nothing other than an operation to force the Ukrainian regime to peace. The troops were there to push the Ukrainian side to negotiate, to try and find an acceptable solution,” he said.

Moscow withdrew from Kyiv in March 2022 and described it a goodwill gesture as peace talks between the two began, but the pullback took place amid fierce Ukrainian resistance that significantly slowed down Russia’s battlefield advances.

Putin also claimed that in that same month, he told a foreign official he wasn’t ruling out withdrawing forces from the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions and ceding occupied parts of them back to Ukraine, as long as Kyiv allowed Russia to have a “strong land connection” to Crimea.

He said the official planned on bringing that proposal to Kyiv — which Moscow “welcomed,” as it generally welcomed “attempts to find a peaceful resolution of the conflict.” But the Kremlin then annexed both regions, along with the Donetsk and Luhansk provinces, citing the results of sham “referendums” it staged there. Putin mentioned those and said, “The matter is closed forever and is no longer up for discussion.”

In Friday’s fighting, Russian defenses shot down 87 Ukrainian drones, the Defense Ministry in Moscow said, most of them launched against the Rostov region, home to Russia’s southern military command, but no deaths or damage were reported in one of the biggest Ukrainian drone barrages of the war.

In Russia’s Belgorod region on the border, part of a residential building collapsed in the town of Shebekino after Ukrainian shelling, Belgorod Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov said. Three people were injured, he said.

Ukraine’s military has been on the back foot in recent months, with its troops outnumbered by the Kremlin’s forces and running short of ammunition and weaponry due to delays in promised Western military aid.

Russia has battered Ukraine with drones, especially its power grid. It fired 14 missiles and 17 Shahed drones overnight, Ukraine’s air force said. Air defense systems downed all the drones as well as seven missiles, it said.

The attacks injured six people in the Donetsk region, where residential buildings were hit, officials said.

A Russian drone struck a bus near the village of Esman in the northern Sumy region, injuring three women. Authorities say 20 passengers were in the bus at the time.

Also Friday, Russia returned to Ukraine the bodies of 254 of its soldiers, Kyiv said. The US and Ukraine signed off Thursday on a 10-year security agreement, with the leaders of the Group of Seven nations pledging to arrange a $50 billion loan to the war-torn nation.

The security deal, signed by President Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of a joint news conference on the sidelines of the annual G7 summit in southern Italy, will boost weapons-production cooperation , provide other military assistance and increase intelligence sharing.

The agreement also commits the Pentagon to another decade of training Ukraine’s armed forces.

“We’ve taken three major steps at the G7 that collectively show [Russian President Vladimir] Putin he cannot wait us out, he cannot divide us, and we’ll be with Ukraine until they prevail in this war,” said Biden, 81. 

“First is the bilateral security agreement just signed. Second, the historic agreement to provide $50 billion in value from Russian sovereign assets to Ukraine, and third an agreement to ensure our sanctions efforts disrupt third countries that are supplying Russia’s war efforts.” 

The US also announced a fresh military aid package for Kyiv valued at $225 million, which includes “air-defense interceptors; artillery systems and munitions; armored vehicles; and anti-tank weapons,” according to the White House.

Funding for the package will come out of the $60 billion Congress allocated to Ukraine defense spending as part of a supplemental funding bill approved in April .

The US is also expected to announce that it is sending Kyiv a second Patriot missile system , which Zelensky has said is critical to his country’s defense against Russian air and missile strikes on civilian infrastructure.

“All our other partners, they know that urgently we need seven Patriot systems to save our cities – not all of them, we’d still need more – but urgently seven,” the Ukrainian leader said Thursday. “And we discussed the possibility of having five of them … and the partners work on it.”

“It doesn’t mean that tomorrow we will have these five systems, but we see in the closest future, good result for Ukraine,” he added

Though the official announcement of the Patriot donation did not come Thursday, Biden and Zelensky said that the US has worked to secure commitments from unnamed countries to provide five additional Patriot missile systems to Ukraine in the near future.

Biden met with Zelensky just two days before the start of the 90-nation Ukraine Peace Summit in Lucerne, Switzerland. 

The US president is skipping out on the event, which aims to develop a path to the end of the war with Russia,  to attend a Hollywood fundraiser  hosted by George Clooney on Saturday. 

Vice President Kamala Harris will represent the US at the conference.

Biden, whose general-election rival Donald Trump is vowing to personally negotiate an end to the war if he wins on Nov. 5, used his joint press conference with Zelensky as a moment to underscore US support for Kyiv.

“Two and a half years ago, Putin unleashed a brutal war in Ukraine and it’s been a horrifying deal for the Ukrainian people, who are so brave and incredible,” Biden said.

“It also been a test for the world: Would we stand with Ukraine? Would we stand for sovereignty, freedom and against tyranny? The United States, the G7 and countries around the world have consistently answered the question by saying, ‘Yes, we will.’ We will say it again, ‘Yes’, again and again and again, we’re gonna stand with Ukraine.”

National security adviser Jake Sullivan will join Harris in representing the United States at the upcoming peace conference. 

Meanwhile, the G7 — which includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the US and the European Union — announced the broad outlines of the $50 billion loan, which would be mostly guaranteed by Washington and backed by profits earned on roughly $260 billion in immobilized Russian assets — the vast majority of which are held by European nations.

The loan, which a French official told the Associated Press could be “topped up” with European money or contributions from other countries, is due to be officially announced Friday.

The US and its allies immediately froze whatever Russian central bank assets they had access to when Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022. However, the assets still belong to Russia and rendering them forfeit for Ukraine’s benefit would require a legal basis and time-consuming court proceedings.

In April, Congress passed and Biden signed into law the so-called REPO Act — short for Rebuilding Economic Prosperity and Opportunity for Ukrainians Act — that allows the White House to seize $5 billion in Russian state assets in the US and use them for the benefit of Kyiv.

The Kyiv City Ballet  ( www.kcbtheater.com ), under the artistic direction of  Ivan Kozlov , announced today a U.S tour from  September 16 to October 24, 2022 . The Fall tour is a US premiere and marks the  Kyiv City Ballet’s  first United States performances ever. 

The day before Ukraine was invaded in February,  The Kyiv City Ballet  unknowingly took one of the last flights out of Kyiv. The company flew to Paris to begin a long planned tour. They have not returned home. The country of France sheltered them and the company has been performing throughout France, and now Europe, since the invasion began.

The US tour will include a full-length  Swan Lake  (choreography by Marius Petipa, Lev Ivanov and Ivan Kozlov), and a second mixed repertory program of three ballets:  Thoughts  (choreography by Vladyslav Dobshynskyi) a contemporary ballet,  Tribute to Peace  (choreography by Ekaterina and Ivan Kozlov) a neo-classical work, and  Men of Kyiv  (choreography by Pavlo Virsky )  a Ukranian folk dance.

“We are honored to share the beauty of ballet with US audiences, through Ukranian artists” said  Ivan Kozlov , Artistic Director. “Touring the States for the first time with a range of ballets makes an important global statement. It demonstrates the resilience of the Ukrainian people.”

The Kyiv City Ballet’s  mission is to bring joy to audiences through ballet by bringing exemplary artists to theatres around the world. In the past decade, the company has successfully toured throughout dozens of countries on four continents.

Two of Ukraine’s prima ballerinas:  Krystina Kadashevych  and  Oksana Bondarenko  will perform with the company on their US tour. The company’s principal dancer is  Vsevolod Maevskiy , a former soloist of the Mariinsky Ballet and Kozlov’s former student.

Ivan Kozlov  (Artistic Director)

Ex-Premier of the National Opera of Ukraine, The St. Petersburg Eifman Ballet, IBT (Internationale Ballet Theater), and the Mariinsky Theater; the choreographer and teacher Ivan Anatolievich Kozlov was born on 13 December 1982. In 2000, after graduating from the KGHU (Kiyv State Choreographic School), under the tutelage of the Honored Artist of Ukraine, Vladimir Denisenko, Ivan Kozlov was invited to join the ballet troupe of the National Opera of Ukraine, and simultaneously to the world- famous troupe of Boris Eifman in St. Petersburg. He worked as an artist in both troupes. During his work in the theater of B. Eifman, Ivan performed the leading parts in the following repertoire: “Red Giselle”, “Don Quixote”, “Russian Hamlet”, “Anna Karenina”, and “The Brothers Karamazov”. In the troupe of the National Opera of Ukraine, he performed the leading parts in the ballets Swan Lake, Giselle, Spartacus, Don Quixote, Viennese Waltz, and many others. Ivan Kozlov worked under contract as a leading soloist of the “Internationale Ballet Theater” in the United States. From 2007 to 2010, he was the premier of the ballet troupe of the Mariinsky Theater, where he performed the leading parts in nearly the entire repertoire of the theater, as well as in numerous concert numbers. Ivan is a laureate of many ballet competitions, including the Serge Lifar International Competition (2002, silver medal) and the X Moscow International Competition (2005, silver medal). Among the teachers of Ivan Kozlov are some of the most outstanding dancers of the 20 th  century: People’s Artist of the USSR, Irina Kolpakova, People’s Artist of the USSR Vladlilen Semenov, People’s Artist of the RSFSR, Sergei Berezhnoi, Premier of the Mariinsky Theater, Eldar Aliyev, and Honored Artist of Ukraine, Anatoly Kozlov. Since 2014, Ivan Kozlov has been the executive of the theater, “Kiev City Ballet” with which he has successfully toured Europe and the world.

Ukraine’s Kyiv City Ballet Prepares for Its First U.S. Tour

On February 23, 2022, Ukraine’s Kyiv City Ballet arrived in Paris to begin a two-week national tour of The Nutcracker . Russia invaded Ukraine the next day, stranding the company in the French city indefinitely. Since then, the troupe has been relying on the generosity of others while organizing short tours in Europe and actively fundraising to keep itself going.

Now, Kyiv City Ballet is preparing to cross the Atlantic for its first-ever U.S. tour. From September 16 to October 26 the 38-member company will perform in 15 cities across the country, including a stop at the acclaimed Fall for Dance Festival at New York City Center. “I am looking forward to showing good performances, to making the audience happy, and to starting a good relationship with the United States,” said artistic director Ivan Kozlov in a video interview in early August. Kozlov founded Kyiv City Ballet in 2012.

Rhizome Arts Consulting founder Kristopher McDowell, who is producing the American tour, underscored the lengths U.S. presenters have gone to in order to help the company. For example, New York City Center is providing an additional contribution towards KCB’s international travel costs, and the University of Tennessee is organizing a one-week residency for the company with Chattanooga Ballet. “Every day, we’re learning about the tenderness of the human condition,” says McDowell, who hopes that the tour will attract new audiences to dance and ballet. He also wants to achieve a financial stopgap to support the company’s future tours and provide some stability until they can return home.

The Never-Ending Tour

When the dancers left for Paris in February, they were unprepared for an extended stay. But those company members not on the tour had a bigger problem back in Ukraine. As violence spread across the country, they faced the heart-wrenching decision to escape for safety and join their colleagues abroad.

Principal dancer Oksana Bondarenko was home in Kyiv with her family when the bombing began in February. “I was scared,” she told Pointe via Zoom, with Kozlov interpreting for her. Her young son ran in and out of view, and she gently reprimanded him in Ukrainian before embracing him with a smile. “You don’t know what to do. You’re helpless…You just grab your kids and run away as far as possible.”

Bondarenko and her family fled to Lviv, in western Ukraine, eventually leaving for Germany when explosions struck the city. She tried to keep in shape until she could eventually rejoin KCB in Paris weeks later. Although Bondarenko has returned to Kyiv for a brief visit, Kozlov noted that other dancers feel it’s too risky to return.

Fortunately, the company has found a warm welcome and overwhelming support in France, said Kozlov, who shared stories of generosity and support from strangers around the world. The Théâtre du Châtelet, Palais Garnier and other Parisian venues offered their rehearsal spaces and support to the stranded company, while ballet companies have donated dancewear, pointe shoes and other supplies to the KCB dancers, who had only packed for two weeks.

Performing for Peace

Unable to return home, the company instead scheduled intermittent tours throughout Europe to raise money for Ukrainian humanitarian efforts and ensure employment for its dancers. On June 14, they took part in a charity concert at England’s York Theatre Royal, raising nearly £27,000 for UNICEF . The next day, they performed in Biarritz, France, to fundraise for Fondation de France’s refugee support .

“You think that artists are used to travel, used to touring,” Kozlov says, “but now it feels like an infinity tour.” While they are grateful for work and support in the interim, Kozlov says, “everybody [in the company has] hope for the best, and we’re hoping that everything will finish and life will come back.”

For its U.S. debut, KCB is bringing a full-length Swan Lake and a few mixed-repertoire programs. Included among the rep is Tribute to Peace , a neoclassical work choreographed by Kozlov and his wife, associate director Ekaterina Kozlova; Vladyslav Dobshynskyi’s contemporary ballet Thoughts ; and Pavlo Virsky’s Ukrainian folk dance Men of Kyiv. KCB will also present classical suites of selected pas de deux from Don Quixote, La Bayadère , Paquita and more.  

“It’s so nice, so good to hear about people’s hearts, open minds and souls,” Kozlov says of those who’ve made the U.S. tour possible. “We’re really thankful and looking forward to seeing them.”
