Mario Kart

Cloudtop Cruise is the first course of the Special Cup of Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe .

  • 2 Shortcuts
  • 3 Statistics

Cloudtop Cruise takes place in a sky area. It is based on Super Mario Galaxy in that its music and airships originate from said game.

The track starts on a giant Question Block with a vine growing horizontally out of it. The track winds along the stem of the vine, ending in a ramp with a Boost Pad , which shoots you onto the top of a bouncy hot-air balloon. From there the track is in the clouds. Halfway along it bends around a second balloon which provides a minor shortcut.

Next the track drops onto the deck of the largest airship, and forks into two short paths around the mast. Both paths have Barrels as obstacles and end in a large Cannon where your glider comes out, and you fly between two rows of flying Paragoombas and into a cloud tunnel.

In the cloud tunnel, Anti-gravity switches on as you drive along an upside-down metal tracks. There are plenty of Boost Pads which will attract lightning from the surrounding clouds, shrinking the player if they happen to pass through at those times. The track ends with a glider ramp, from which you fly back to the giant Question Box.

Shortcuts [ ]

There is a shortcut where you bounce over two leaves of the vine, just before the first bend in the track, cutting across the bend.

Statistics [ ]

  • The beanstalk comes out of a ? Block .
  • The opening of the music plays in amiibo screens in retail stores.
  • The end of the music remixes with Sky Station Galaxy and Gusty Garden Galaxy 's music.
  • There's a remix of the main song that plays when you enter the thundercloud area.
  • If you go into the cannon, and get shocked in the middle of it, right before the transition to the thundercloud area, where the music changes, there will be no music playing until Lakitu picks you back up.

Mario Kart 8 [ ]

The race starts a giant beanstalk, shortly after there is a ramp with some Item Boxes on it, there is a Bowser Balloon that characters can bounce on, similar to the mushrooms in Mushroom Gorge from Mario Kart Wii . The racers will then continue racing on a cloud. Later, they come onto an airship, where the player encounters two paths, both of which meet up right before a cannon , which launches the player to an anti-gravity metal track inside a storm cloud.

On the track, there are many boost panels, but once in a while, lightning will strike them, which the racers have to avoid or else they will get knocked out. This section then ends to start a gliding section, which touches down on a giant stone ? Block. There is just one more right turn before the finish line.

Shortcuts [ ]

  • Players can bounce on the second Bowser Balloon without using a Mushroom .
  • Near the end of the lap, players can jump off two big leaves, cutting off the final corner.

Trivia! [ ]

  • This course is considered to be the "aerial" equivalent to the Rainbow Road .
  • The ? Block platform at the end of the anti-gravity section is a reference to how Vines and Beanstalks grow out of ? Blocks in Mario games.
  • This is one of the only three courses in Special Cup that have Dash Panels turn off under certain matter in this case, whenever they're struck by lightning.
  • This is one of the four nitro tracks in Mario Kart 8 to only have an alternate music of their track. The others are Water Park , Shy Guy Falls , and Dolphin Shoals . Coincidentally, they all appear separately in each nitro cup.

Cloudtop Cruise is a track in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe . It is part of the Special Cup and is the first course. This course mainly takes place on a giant beanstalk (similar to Sky Garden ) and on an airship (like Airship Fortress ). The track takes place on the clouds. A part of the track has Bowser 's Airships in it. The first portion of the track music plays on amiibo screens in retail stores. The ending portion of both variations uses parts of Sky Station Galaxy and Gusty Garden Galaxy 's music from the Super Mario Galaxy games . The course's music also reappears as an arrangement in the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the new Mario Circuit stage, which combines the two variations.

The Music of Mario Kart 8

“The music used throughout the Mario Kart series isn’t intended to be just background music,” says Kenta Nagata. “Instead we aim to produce pieces that will stick in players’ minds. We consider it a great success if the other production staff start unconsciously humming the tunes as they’re racing.”

This post originally appeared on Kotaku UK .

Anyone who’s played Mario Kart 8 recently will surely have done the same. It’s the first time the series has used live recorded music, and Nintendo used a number of composers and some of Japan’s finest musicians to create what might well be one of Nintendo’s finest soundtracks to date. Nagata, the game’s sound director, explains that, as the series’ HD debut, Mario Kart 8 needed a soundtrack to fit. “It was felt that live recorded music would work very well in conjunction with [high-definition graphics]. It really creates a vibrant, live feeling, and amplifies the scale of the game as a whole.”

The benefit of using live musicians, explains Nagata, was no longer having to “painstakingly simulate guitar performances” on computer. It did, however, mean more work in terms of recording and mixing, though as this wasn’t the first time Nintendo had used live recordings, the production process “wasn’t particularly special”.

Related Content

It did, however, mean that Nintendo had to be particular in its choice of musicians. “As I’m sure you’re aware, the Mario Kart series is all about racing around courses brimming with variety, and the genres of music that accompany this are equally varied,” says Nagata. “We look for great musicians who can handle a variety of genres as opposed to just focusing on one in particular. We listened to a lot of music samples to select musicians we thought would be a good fit for the Mario Kart series.”

“During development, we consider it a great success if the other production staff start unconsciously humming the tunes as they’re racing.”

“For the performances themselves,” he continues, “we asked the musicians to play a little differently to how they would if they were performing formally, by asking them to keep in mind that the most important point was to avoid losing that game-like feeling, whilst also getting a performance with artistic character.” The secret behind a good Mario Kart track, explains Nagata, is that it can survive being listened to “on [a] loop hundreds, if not thousands of times, without getting on people’s nerves.”

It’s certainly an eclectic soundtrack, from the heavy guitars of Bowser’s Castle to the freestyling saxophone solos in Dolphin Shoals and the string and brass-led grandeur of the majestic Mount Wario. And yet at the same time, it also relies on more traditional ‘videogame’ instrumentation, which often combines with the live music. How, then, did the composers decide which tracks needed more live elements, and which would work better with synthetic instrumentation?

“It was a challenge to create music that made effective use of the good points of both videogame-style music and live music,” says Shiho Fujii, who previously composed music for New Super Mario Bros. U and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword , and was responsible for the Mario Circuit and Electrodrome themes here.

“For example, the music for circuit-type courses tends to be in a style suited to real instruments like guitar, bass, drums and so on. We were looking forward to hearing the natural groove and rhythm that the live performances of these instruments would bring to those tracks, so we chose to record them first. What we ended up with were tracks that had a lot more bounce than they would have had if we didn’t use live-recorded instruments. On the other hand, we used synthesizer sounds a lot in the music of courses involving unusual locations or fantastical themes. That way we felt it would further enhance the sense of the fantastical and create very characteristic music.”

One of the most distinctive and characterful themes can be found in the Electrodrome, as a punchy, thumping rhythm soundtracks a race through a disco-themed environment. “Electrodrome is a very visual course, featuring a light show of a kind never before seen in the series,” explains Fujii. “I think you can really feel a freshness in the dance floor-style setting. The course itself is very stimulating, so for the audio I wanted to create something that felt completely different from anything in the Mario Kart series so far. This is why I went for a completely different tone and atmosphere, and made this piece an intense dance music number.”

Atsuko Asahi, who previously contributed works to Pikmin 3 and Steel Diver , and arranged the music for The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD , was responsible for the equally catchy Sunshine Airport theme. “I had the sound of an analogue Moog synthesizer in mind while making the track. It just naturally came to mind when I thought about the urban feel of the airport mixed with the noise and smells of the runway. I also wanted to get across the feeling of floating, so I added effects like delay to achieve this.”

Asahi was also given the responsibility of producing the game’s title theme, which was a rather different proposition. “I usually choose the instruments and tone of a piece to match the image I have of the course, so I didn’t consciously think about whether each course needed a live element in its music or not,” he says. “However, I wanted the players’ immediate impression [of the main theme] to be that the music had been ‘powered up’ through the use of real instruments.

“Basically, my aim was for the track to have the feel of a live session, so as much as possible I gave the musicians space to improvise, emphasizing creativity more than I did when working on tracks for courses in the game.” Few would argue that Asahi achieved his goal: the main theme brilliantly intersperses a bold brass melody with some freestyle guitar work before introducing a Moog-esque line that is recalled in Asahi’s Sunshine Airport theme, and then segueing into a remix of the original Super Mario Kart theme.

“Basically, my aim was for the [title] track to have the feel of a live session, so as much as possible I gave the musicians space to improvise, emphasizing creativity more than I did when working on music for courses in the game.”

It’s not the only callback, of course. As you approach the start line on the first of the Special Cup tracks, Cloudtop Cruise, the soundtrack wonderfully and seamlessly weaves in the melody from Super Mario Galaxy’s Gusty Garden Galaxy theme. “After I talked to the course designer and they shared what they had in mind for the course, I felt that an orchestral sound would go well with it,” says Asahi. “It was right at that moment that I decided to incorporate the Gusty Garden Galaxy theme into it. There isn’t really any deep meaning behind using it though, I’m afraid. The Good Egg Galaxy theme was used as a counter-melody in Rainbow Road on Mario Kart Wii previously, and more than anything else, Cloudtop Cruise is graphically evocative of Super Mario Galaxy , so it just seemed natural to do it.”

Talking of Galaxy , it may not come as a surprise to learn that the man responsible for the bouncy strings of the Puzzle Plank Galaxy theme was also behind the rearrangement of Moo Moo Meadows. “I feel that when it comes to live performances of the game’s music, a lot of the tracks are very fast and difficult to play,” says Ryo Nagamatsu. “It makes it very hard to reproduce an exact match to the original, and in any case, it can be argued that the retro feel is a valuable aspect of the tune. Following on from that though, where the original track simulated live instruments, I tried to use live performance as much as possible.”

Colleague Yasuaki Iwata, who composed the Mario Kart Stadium and MKTV themes, adds: “due to the graphical improvements in this entry, the original music no longer matched the feel of the game for certain courses. In these cases, we poured a lot of effort into creating new arrangements.”

One of the game’s smartest aural flourishes comes in Dolphin Shoals, with the triumphant arrival of a live saxophone when you emerge from the quieter, more muted underwater sections. Asked about the technical issues of shifting naturally between the two, Asahi admits it’s actually a bit of trick. “We raised the part where the saxophone plays the melody up one key compared to the other parts. This is a method we don’t usually employ when switching between pieces, but I think the ear picks up on the fact that the music sounds ‘brighter’, rather than the specific nature of the change. To make the switch sound more natural, we overlaid a splashing sound effect when players leap out of the water to mask the cross-fade and make the change harder to discern.”

It certainly seems that Nintendo is pleased with the results: players are given the opportunity to better appreciate the composers’ efforts by watching replays with the sound effects turned off, and indeed that’s something Asahi recommends for Dolphin Shoals in particular.

“The piece used there is a longer version than the one you hear during the race. You’ll be able to hear one of Japan’s top sax players ad-libbing with great feeling in it!” Nagamatsu is equally keen to pay tribute to the solo composers. “I’d be really happy if players listen out for the phrasing of each individual instrument. In the pieces I was in charge of, such as the Mount Wario theme or the Staff Credits music, the tracks as a whole are very dynamic, and contain a lot of solos on different instruments, so I hope you enjoy listening to the unique voice and tempo of each of them.”

“We carefully crafted all the music, regardless of whether it was recorded live or not,” concludes Iwata. “I hope you all enjoy playing the game, and find your own favourite courses.”

GBA Sky Garden

Sky Garden is the second race course of the Lightning Cup in Mario Kart: Super Circuit . The track takes place on a cobbled road atop clouds, with bridges connecting them and beanstalks scattered around the clouds. This course has no major obstacles, although players can easily fall off of it. The Luigi blimp from Luigi Circuit can be seen in the background. A similar course with several shared names in other languages known as Cloudtop Cruise appears in Mario Kart 8 .

Sky Garden returns as the third course of the retro Lightning Cup in Mario Kart DS , in Mario Kart Tour , debuting in the Sky Tour , and in the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass as the third course of the Lucky Cat Cup .

Mario Kart: Super Circuit [ edit ]

Course layout [ edit ].

The course begins with a 90° turn to the left, the first set of Item Boxes , and a slight S-bend that ends in a wide jump pad; here racers must jump over a gap in the track. There is then an inverse S-bend immediately followed by another 90° left turn and a brief straightaway. The straightaway leads into a left turn followed by a sharp right turn and another 90° left turn. Racers then drive over a short bridge that leads into a sharp left turn followed by two slight turns and another brief straightaway. After the straightaway is a U-turn to the right followed by a slight left turn and another short bridge, with the last item set on top. After two left turns and a slight right turn, racers reach one last brief straightaway; along this straightaway there is a hole in the left side of the track preceded by a jump pad. At the end of the straightaway lies the finish line.

Shortcuts [ edit ]

The first notable shortcut can be found after the first turn. The player can use a Mushroom to drive through the off-road to the right of the track and go off a jump pad, clearing a large gap and skipping the two slight S-bends.

The second notable shortcut can be found at the end of the first straightaway. Instead of turning left, the player can use a Mushroom to continue driving straight through the off-road, using a jump pad to clear the gap and skip the following sharp right turn. Alternatively, they can take the left turn but use a jump pad on the inside of the sharp right turn to cut it off without using an item; this rewards the player with a lone Item Box. However, if the player does use a Mushroom when going off the latter jump pad, they can land on a later part of the track and completely skip several turns.

Lastly, the player can drive to the left of the track immediately after the right U-turn, where there is a cloud platform. By driving across it to the track on the other side, the player can cut off several turns without needing to use an item.

Mario Kart DS [ edit ]

Sky Garden makes its classic course debut in Mario Kart DS as the third course of the Lightning Cup , holding the distinction of being the only track to appear in the same cup twice (not counting the Extra Tracks in Mario Kart: Super Circuit ). There is an added shortcut in this version. After going across the small boost ramp leading to an item, the player must use a Mushroom and hop at the exact right second to get across the large gap. The shortcut can also be done with a well placed jump over the large gap if the player is using a high acceleration kart without a Mushroom, but is very difficult to perform. This is possible in the original game, but the player will fall right over the other side no matter what. Additionally, the first shortcut has an added longer cloud in front of the original one at the gap's end. The staff ghost is Daisy .

Missions [ edit ]

There is one mission that takes place on Sky Garden:

  • Mission 6-5 : The player controls Peach , who must pass through 8 gates within 50 seconds. Each Item Box contains Triple Mushrooms .

Mario Kart Tour [ edit ]

Sky Garden returns in Mario Kart Tour starting from the Sky Tour . It is the second classic course in Mario Kart Tour (the first being GBA Sunset Wilds ) to receive a new arrangement for its music and currently one of two GBA courses with a previous arrangement to receive a new arrangement in the game, the other being Peach Circuit (and by extension, GBA Luigi Circuit ). There are now two blimps; both use the appearance from Singapore Speedway . The giant beanstalks that previously only appeared in the background are now closer to the course, and one of them features a red Toad House on a cloud.

A course banner is added at the starting line, featuring the classic Mario Kart logo in a round frame supported by two beanstalks, which grow from earthenware planters. The road is also now made entirely of gray stone files, formed in an arched pattern, and features flowerpots and fences in the off-road areas. The course has been simplified, with some of the bends being removed. The first shortcut now features players performing Jump Boosts on giant leaves while the last is now under the beanstalk that supports the Toad House. The second shortcut is removed; the ramp now leads to a mushroom trampoline on the main route. The straightaway near the finish line is replaced with a gliding section.

The course also appears as Sky Garden R (reversed), Sky Garden T (with ramps), and Sky Garden R/T (reversed with ramps). The former two debuted alongside the normal variant in the Sky Tour, while the latter was introduced in the 2023 New Year's Tour . In the R and T variants, the mushroom trampoline is removed. In the T variant, there are several Piranha Plants along the track as well as a moving platform with a dash panel ramp. In the R/T variant, racers drive across several additional mushroom trampolines, including a blue one.

GBA Sky Garden's R/T variant is visible in an unused banner present in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 's files as of version 2.0.0. This instance predated its official announcement in the 2023 New Year's Tour .

Bonus challenges [ edit ]

Mario kart 8 deluxe [ edit ].

Sky Garden returns in the Booster Course Pass DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe . It is the third course of the Lucky Cat Cup released in the first wave in March 2022, nearly a month after its inclusion in Mario Kart Tour , though it was revealed in gameplay form in a February 2022 Nintendo Direct prior to its addition to said game. It derives its appearance and layout from Mario Kart Tour , except with orange stone tiles instead of gray and an animated cloud texture. Unlike Tour, the leaf shortcut is reflected on the minimap. Many mushroom trampolines can be seen growing from underneath the course, and several airships from Cloudtop Cruise appear in the background instead of the blimps. Koopa Paratroopas appear as spectators on the course.

Like many other classic courses in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe , the music has been redone with live instruments, featuring a saxophone, piano, and electric guitar lead instead of the original song's synths.

Much like the other tracks in Wave 1, the Booster Course Pass's initial reveal trailer and official artwork use screenshots of the Mario Kart Tour version of Sky Garden. However, on the Nintendo eShop image Media:MK8D BCP Wave 1.jpg for Wave 1, Sky Garden is the only course to use a screenshot of its 8 Deluxe version rather than its Tour version.

As with all other courses from Wave 1, this course's icon and lighting were adjusted slightly in the 2.1.0 update.

Track layout comparisons [ edit ]

The Mario Kart Tour (and 8 Deluxe ) layout is slightly narrowed in the X-axis compared to Mario Kart: Super Circuit (and DS ). The first sections through to the main jump sections are similar; the shortcut at turn 2 no longer needs a Mushroom in Tour , the lead-in turn 4 into the 270° turn 5 is removed in Tour (resulting in a single turn 4), while the bounce mushroom in Tour correspond to the jump area in Super Circuit .

At this point, the layouts diverge significantly. Tour skips Super Circuit 's turn 7 and 8 entirely, while Super Circuit 's turns 9 and 10 are merged into the much shorter turn 5. The following short left lead-in roughly correspond between turn 11 in Super Circuit and turn 6 in Tour , and the following U-turn is turn 12 in Super Circuit and turn 7 in Tour , although the lead-in is much shorter in Tour .

The lower section is heavily simplified in Tour , where the U-turn turn 8 covers what in Super Circuit is turns 13 through 17. Super Circuit 's cloud shortcut that skips turn 13, is replaced in Tour by a cloud shortcut preceding turn 8. The final left jump in Super Circuit is replaced by a glider section in Tour .

  9. The Music of Mario Kart 8

Cloudtop Cruise is still wonderful though, especially that thunderstorm section. Current ratings: Mario Kart Stadium - 7. Water Park - 3.
