Visiting the UK as a creative professional from a non-visa national country

Information for entertainers and musicians, from non-visa national countries, such as EU Member States and the US, visiting the UK for performance and work.

What you need to know

The UK does not have work permits. The UK’s domestic rules allow musicians, entertainers and artists from non-visa national countries , such as EU Member States and the US, to come to undertake paid work in the UK for up to:

1 month without requiring a visa if they are invited to the UK by a UK-based client or organisation, and paid by a UK source (under the permitted paid engagement visitor rules).

3 months without requiring a visa if they have been assigned a certificate of sponsorship by a licensed sponsor under the Temporary Work - Creative Worker visa concession .

6 months without requiring a visa if performing at a permit-free festival. The list of permit free festivals is published under the Immigration Rules and includes a range of events, from Glastonbury to Glyndebourne.

12 months on the Temporary Work - Creative Worker route, if they obtain a visa and a Certificate of Sponsorship.

The Business Helpdesk can assist with queries from sponsors and employers bringing workers to the UK. The Business Helpdesk cannot assist with queries about visa applications or queries from individuals travelling to the UK.

There are also other visa routes available, such as for Frontier Workers . See Other ways Creative Workers can come to work in the UK for further guidance. Check if you need a visa before you travel.

Paid by a non-UK source and unpaid work: Non-visa national artists, entertainers or musicians (and their personal, technical and production staff) can give performances, take part in competitions, auditions, make personal appearances and take part in promotional activities for up to 6 months visa-free under the Standard visitor route if they are not receiving payment from a UK source other than prize money or expenses.

Support staff: Personal or technical staff or members of the production team of an artist, entertainer or musician may support the activities of an artist, entertainer or musician who is coming to the UK under the Standard visitor or Permitted Paid Engagement visitor route, provided they are attending the same event as the artist, entertainer or musician, and are employed to work for them outside of the UK.

Personal or technical staff may support the activities of a Creative Worker on the Temporary Work – Creative Worker route as members of that person’s entourage, provided they meet certain conditions, including that their employment is directly related to the work the Creative Worker will be doing in the UK. See Sponsor a Creative Worker for more information.

An orchestra is coming to the UK to perform, for which they will be paid by a UK company that is hosting the event.

If the orchestra is staying for up to one month, they can come under the permitted paid engagement route and do not need to apply for a visa in advance. Upon arrival at the border, they must not use the ePassport gates, and must see a Border Force officer to provide proof of their permitted paid engagement to gain the appropriate stamp in their passports. Without the passport stamp, they will not be allowed to carry out their performance in the UK. See Entering the UK - At border control for more information.

If the orchestra intends to stay for up to 3 months, they may be able to use the Temporary Work - Creative Worker visa concession. At the border they must not use the ePassport gates, and must see a Border Force officer and provide their Certificate of Sponsorship to gain the appropriate stamp in their passports. Without the passport stamp, they will not be allowed to carry out their performance in the UK. See Creative Worker visa concession for more information.

If they intend to stay longer, they will need to apply (before arrival and outside the UK) for a Temporary Work - Creative Worker visa, which will allow them to stay for up to 12 months, with the possibility of extending this by a further 12 months if they continue to work for the same sponsor. See Temporary Work – Creative Worker visa for more information.

A UK promoter is sponsoring a band from an EU Member State who will be arriving for the second time within 3 months under the Temporary Work – Creative Worker visa concession. The band already holds a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) under the Temporary Work - Creative Worker route. The promoter booking the band chose not to certify the band members’ maintenance on their Certificates of Sponsorship.

The band must see a Border Force officer and provide their CoS upon arrival in the UK if they are seeking entry under the concession; they must not use the ePassport gates. Each time they leave the Common Travel Area and want to re-enter the UK under the concession, they must complete this process to gain the appropriate stamp in their passports. Without the passport stamp, they will not be allowed to carry out their performance in the UK.

As the sponsor did not certify maintenance on the bands’ certificates, each band member must provide evidence at the border that they have at least £1,270 in personal savings (plus additional funds for any dependants who are travelling with them). These funds must have been held for at least a consecutive 28-day period ending no more than 31 days before the date of arrival. See Temporary Work – Creative Worker visa for more information.

Other issues

Travelling creative professionals may also need to consider other issues such as customs, tax and haulage requirements. Further guidance is available at Touring Europe - checklists for the arts, cultural, creative, and heritage sectors .

Creative Worker Visa (Temporary Work) Guide

creative worker

IN THIS SECTION

The Creative Worker visa is for individuals to undertake temporary work in the UK within the creative sector.

In this guide, we explain the requirements of the Creative Worker visa, as well as what this route allows and how to apply.

What is the Creative Worker visa?

If an overseas national has been offered work in the UK as a worker in the creative sector, they will need to obtain a ‘Temporary Work – Creative Worker’ visa. Provided they meet the eligibility requirements, this will give them permission to undertake work in the UK for their sponsor. The sponsor could be an agent, a producer, a promoter or promotion company, a production company, media organisation or an events organiser.

A creative worker is an overseas national who can make a unique contribution to the UK’s rich cultural life, for example, as an entertainer, musician, dancer or actor, and can include any technical and support staff, known as their entourage. The Creative Worker route also includes anyone working as a model, contributing to the UK’s fashion industry.

What does the Creative Worker visa allow?

The Creative Worker visa will allow a sponsored overseas national to undertake work for their UK sponsor. However, certain other activities will be permitted, including a course of study, although an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate may be needed.

A visa-holder can also undertake a second job in the same sector as the work for which they are being sponsored to do in the UK, provided this is at the same level as their main job, or a job on the Skilled Worker shortage occupation list , for up to 20 hours per week. However, they will not be able to start their own business, nor will they be eligible for public funds.

How long does the Creative Worker visa last?

A Creative Work visa will be granted for a maximum of up to 12 months, or the time stated on the applicant’s Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), plus up to 28 days, whichever is shorter.

However, if a non-visa national intends to work in the UK for 3 months or less, they may be able to use the Creative Worker visa concession instead. Provided they do not normally need visa to enter the UK as a visitor, an individual can enter the UK without applying for a visa in advance if they have a valid CoS from an approved sponsor for the Creative Worker route. However, they must still meet the visa eligibility requirements.

Creative Worker visa requirements

To qualify for a Creative Worker visa, or the Creative Worker visa concession, the individual will need to satisfy various eligibility requirements, including:

  • They are genuinely intending, and are able, to do the role for which they are being sponsored, and are not planning to undertake any other employment, except as permitted
  • They must be able to show that they will make a unique contribution to the UK’s labour market, for example, that they are internationally renowned or are required for continuity
  • They must be paid the minimum salary as set by the relevant union, such as Equity, PACT or BECTU, or otherwise commensurate with industry standards
  • They must have a valid CoS from an approved UK sponsor
  • They must have enough money to support themselves in the UK, unless they are exempt.

Under guidance issued by the Home Office in March 2023, anyone intending to travel to the UK under the Creative Worker visa will need to apply for  Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)  to enter the country.

Sponsorship requirement

An applicant for a Creative Worker visa will need to have a valid CoS from an approved sponsor before they can apply to perform or work as a Creative Worker. This is an electronic record confirming the work that the applicant will be doing in the UK and how much they will be paid. To issue a sponsorship certificate for an overseas national to perform or work in dance, theatre, opera, film, television, or as a fashion model, sponsors must follow the specific requirements listed in Appendix Creative Worker Codes of Practice.

Accordingly, the certificate should confirm that the applicant complies with the relevant code of practice, where one exists for their occupation. If there is no code of practice, and unless the role is in a shortage occupation, the sponsor must instead confirm on the certificate that the applicant will not be displacing a suitable settled worker in the UK.

The sponsor can give an applicant a certificate that covers the entire length of their stay, even if they need to perform at more than one engagement. However, there must not be a gap of more than 14 days between each individual engagement, although time spent outside the UK will not be counted towards this 14-day period. If the applicant will be working for more than one sponsor, they can get a certificate from each sponsor, although there must again be no more than 14 days between each individual engagement.

Financial requirement

The applicant must prove they have enough personal savings to support themselves on arrival in the UK. This means that they must have at least £1,270 available in their bank account, and this money must have been available for at least 28 consecutive days, where day 28 must be within 31 days of the date of their application.

The applicant will usually need to provide proof of funds when they apply, unless they are applying from the UK and have already been in the country with a valid visa for at least 12 months. Alternatively, their sponsor can confirm on the sponsorship certificate that they will, if needed, maintain and accommodate the applicant for up to the first month of their employment in the UK for an amount of at least £1,270.

How to apply for a Creative Worker visa

To apply for a Creative Worker visa, the applicant will need to submit an online application using the unique reference number from their sponsorship certificate, where this certificate will only be valid for a period of 3 months from the date it is assigned to them.

Having submitted their online application, the applicant will need to prove their identity and provide a number of supporting documents. The way in which an applicant can do this will depend on where they are from and what type of passport they have. They may be able to prove their identity using the UK Immigration: ID Check app or they may need to attend an in-person appointment to enrol their biometric information.

The applicant will find out if an appointment is needed when they start their visa application. If they are applying from outside the UK and need to attend an appointment, this will be at an overseas visa application centre. If they are applying from within the UK, the appointment will be at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services service point.

However, switching into the Creative Worker route from within the UK is generally not permitted. The only exception is where an individual has, or last had, permission as a visitor, has been in the UK undertaking permitted creative sector activities and was assigned a valid CoS on the Creative Worker route before they entered the UK.

Creative Worker visa supporting documents

When applying for a Creative Worker visa, in addition to having a valid CoS number, the applicant will need to provide various documents in support, including:

  • a valid passport or other document that shows their identity and nationality
  • evidence that they have enough personal savings to support themselves on their arrival in the UK, for example, bank statements, unless their sponsor has confirmed support
  • tuberculosis test results, if they are from a country where they have to take the test.

How much is the Creative Worker visa?

The application fee to apply for a Creative Worker visa is £298, where the fee is the same whether someone is applying from inside or outside the UK. The same fee also applies to the dependants of the principal applicant or primary visa-holder.

The applicant, together with any partner and children, will also each need to pay the immigration healthcare surcharge to gain access to the NHS while in the UK.

How long does it take to get a Creative Worker visa?

An applicant can apply for a Creative Worker visa up to 3 months before the day that they are due to start work in the UK. This date will be listed on their sponsorship certificate.

Once the applicant has submitted their application, proved their identity and provided their supporting documentation, either by using the app or attending an appointment, they will usually get a decision on their visa within 3 weeks if they have applied from outside the UK and 8 weeks if they have applied from within the UK. If the applicant is required to attend an appointment, they may be able to pay for a faster decision, but how they do this will depend on whether they are inside or outside the UK when they make their application.

Can dependants apply for a Creative Worker visa?

One of the main benefits of the Creative Worker route is that qualifying dependants of an eligible worker can accompany or join to follow them. This means that the spouse, partner or children under 18 of the principal applicant or primary visa-holder can either apply at the same time or at a later date, although their visa will end at the same time. However, dependants will need to apply separately and meet the eligibility requirements as a dependent spouse, partner or child, including a relationship and financial requirement.

For the spouse or civil partner of an eligible worker, they must show that they are in a marriage or civil partnership that is recognised in the UK, while an unmarried partner must show that they have been living together in a relationship akin to a marriage or civil partnership for at least 2 years at the date of application.

Any partner and children will also need to provide proof that they can support themselves on arrival in the UK. Funds of £285 will be needed for a spouse/partner, £315 for the first dependent child and £200 for any other dependent child, unless they have been in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months or, alternatively, the worker’s sponsor agrees to support them financially to at least the same amount(s). Where applicable, these funds will need to be shown in addition to the £1270 funds needed for the eligible worker.

What happens if your Creative Worker visa is refused?

If your application for a Creative Worker visa is refused,

Your next steps will largely depend on why your application was refused. If refusal was due to an error in the application content, you may be able to submit a fresh application rectifying the initial mistake. If you believe the decision was based on caseworker error, you may consider challenging the decision, such as through the administrative review process.

It is recommended to take advice on your options and individual circumstances.

Can a Creative Worker visa be extended?

An overseas national can initially be granted permission for up to 12 months on the Creative Worker route and can apply to extend their stay up to a maximum of 2 years if still working for the same sponsor. However, they must continue to meet the requirements and be in the UK when they apply. They must also apply prior to expiry of their existing visa.

If an applicant is looking to change their UK sponsor, they must make a fresh application. However, changing sponsor does not change how long an overseas national will be permitted to stay in the UK under this route. If the applicant is changing sponsors, they can extend their visa for whichever is the shortest of the time on their certificate of sponsorship plus 14 days or the time needed to extend their stay up to the maximum of 12 months.

The applicant’s spouse, partner and children, if they too are looking to stay longer, will need to apply separately to extend their visa. They can either apply at the same time as the primary visa-holder or at any time before their own visa expires.

Importantly, if an overseas national has used the Creative Worker visa concession to enter the UK, they will not be able to extend their stay beyond the maximum 3-month period.

Does a Creative Worker visa lead to settlement?

The Creative Worker visa is a temporary visa and does not provide a path to settlement. The maximum length of stay on this route is 24 months. However, an overseas national may be eligible to switch to another immigration route, one which will allow them to apply for indefinite leave to remain . This could include, for example, the Skilled Worker visa .

Our experienced UK immigration Solicitors can help you with your immigration process.

UK Visas & Immigration requires the following requirements in order to grant you a Creative Visit Visa:

  • Your nationality requires a visa (other nationalities may apply for entry as Visitors at the UK border if they do not hold a visa)
  • You are seeking entry to the UK for a legitimate reason permitted by the visitor routes
  • No prohibited activities will be undertaken by you
  • The costs of your visit (travel, maintenance, and accommodation) can be covered without working or relying on public funds
  • You will leave the UK after your visit
  • You will not live in the UK for extended periods or make it your main home through frequent or consecutive visits;
  • The general grounds for refusal do not apply to your application.
  • Depending on your circumstances, you may need to satisfy different requirements.

Depending on your circumstances, you may need to satisfy different requirements.

Visa nationals are individuals who, due to their nationality, need a Visit Visa in order to enter the UK as a visitor. Visitors who require a visit visa must apply before they travel to the UK.

A list of nationalities that require a Visit Visa prior to visiting the UK as a visitor has been published by the Home Office. Some visa nationals may be able to enter the UK as a Visitor upon arrival under this list. Our expert team will be able to check and confirm whether you require a visa for your visit to the UK.

Non-visa nationals can normally apply for entry as Visitors upon arrival in the UK. Nonetheless, visitors without visas must meet the requirements for entry as Visitors, so upon arrival they should be prepared to explain, for example, the purpose of their trip and how they intend to be accommodated and maintained in the UK, as well as their travel plans for returning home.

Non-visa nationals, including those from the EU or EEA, can enter the UK as a Visitor and do not need to apply for a Visit Visa.

Unsure about whether you require a visa? Speak to our expert team now to confirm if you are required to apply for a visit visa before being granted entry into the UK.

Artists are people who come to the UK in order to engage in an activity associated with the arts (literature, performing arts, visual art, culinary arts). The list of qualifying artists includes, but is not limited to, poets, film crews (including those involved in online media content, such as YouTube), photographers, designers, artists, musicians, writers and conductors. A Creative Visit Visa is available to both amateur and professional artists.

An entertainer is anyone coming to the UK to undertake an activity that is connected to the performing arts, for example dancers, comedians, members of circus acts, members of film crew or those participating in e-sport competitions.

Personal and Technical Staff

Staff or members of the production team who are attending the same event as the artist, entertainer or musician may also qualify for a Creative Visit Visa, provided they are employed by the artist, entertainer or musician to work outside the UK. Examples include, but are not restricted to, choreographers, stage managers, make-up artists, personal bodyguards and press officers.

You must convince UK Visas & Immigration that you are seeking entry to the UK for a genuine purpose permitted by the visitor routes and will not engage in any prohibited activity to qualify for a Creative Visit Visa.

Permission to conduct the following activities is granted to artists, entertainers, and musicians as Creative Visitors:

  • Individually or with a group, give performances;
  • participate in competitions or auditions;
  • give public performances; take part in promotional activities;
  • Attend one or more of the festival or cultural events on the Permit Free Festival List.

Film crews (actors, producers, directors, and technicians) employed by overseas companies can apply for Creative Visit Visas to enter the UK for a location shoot for a film or programme that is being produced and financed overseas.

As Creative Visit Visas are sub-categories of the Standard Visitor Visa, Creative Visitors may also undertake other activities prohibited by the Standard Visitor Visa.

As part of your application for a Creative Visit Visa, you will be required to satisfy the Home Office that you are genuinely seeking to enter the United Kingdom for a permitted purpose. In addition, you must assure the Home Office that you will leave the United Kingdom at the end of your visit and will not reside in the United Kingdom for prolonged periods through frequent or successive visits, or make the UK your place of residence.

In assessing your application, the Home Office will consider the following factors:

  • Previously visited countries and the length of time you spent abroad;
  • Personal financial situation, family, social, and economic background;
  • Economic and personal links to the country of residence.

Home Office officials may doubt your authenticity as a visitor if you do not have many close ties to your country of residence and have several close relatives living in the United Kingdom, if you have previously attempted to deceive the Home Office in an immigration application, and if there are discrepancies in your statement and your sponsor’s statement.

Often, we see that as a result of applicants making applications themselves, UKVI have highlighted discrepancies and treated them as a deliberate attempt to deceive the Home Office. We regularly hear horror stories from clients who innocently made applications without legal guidance as they were intending to save the legal fees but have not understood the immigration rules properly and are now battling to prove that the information they gave was in good faith albeit contained administrative errors.

If you are unclear about whether your intentions meet the requirements or are concerned about the impact of how a previous application may affect your proposed visit, get help from our experts now to get clear, bespoke guidance.

There is no English proficiency requirement for applicants for Creative Visit Visa. However, having a limited command of English can cause many problems whilst preparing and making an application and applying the correct rules and considerations. Applicants for the Creative Visit Visa are exempt from fulfilling an English language requirement. This streamlines the application process, offering flexibility to individuals seeking temporary stays in the UK for creative endeavors without the necessity of meeting specific language proficiency criteria.

Our team are bilingual and can provide you with advice and guidance in languages other than English upon request.

There are no specific requirements as to your financial situation under this visa type, but you will be expected to have enough funds to cover all reasonable costs associated with your visit (e.g., travel, maintenance, and accommodation), without the need to work or access public funds.

A permitted financial institution must hold your funds.

A third party may cover your travel, maintenance, and accommodation costs if the third party has a genuine professional or personal relationship with you, if they do not break immigration laws, and if they are able to support you throughout your visit.

Our expert team can check your plans and guide you through the requirements to ensure that your circumstances can satisfy UK Visa Rules.

You can apply for a Visit Visa that is valid for either a 6 month, 2 year, 5 year, or 10 year period if you wish to visit the UK on a Creative VisitVisit.

While the validity period of your Visit Visa is valid, you can enter and leave the UK more than once, unless your Visit Visa has been endorsed for single or dual entry, you can visit the UK no more than once every six months.

A Creative Visitor is not permitted to work in the UK or, with few exceptions, to receive any payment for activities undertaken in the UK.

Thus, Creative Visitors are not allowed to take up employment, establish or run a business as a sole trader, work for an organisation or business in the UK, undertake a work placement or internship in the UK, or otherwise provide or sell goods or services in the UK.

Artists, entertainers, and musicians visiting the UK can receive compensation for performances at one or more of the festivals listed on the Permit Free Festival List.

During their visit to the UK, Creative Visitors are permitted to perform activities related to their employment overseas, such as responding to emails or answering phone calls.  However, the main purpose of your visit to the UK should be to engage in a permitted activity, rather than to remotely work from the UK.

Visitors who are seeking employment or attending job interviews can also come to the UK as Creative Visitors. If you are successful in obtaining employment, you will have to leave the UK and get entry clearance before starting work.

If you wish to work in the UK as an artist, entertainer or musician, there are a number of alternative visit types which will allow you to do so.

Our team are experts in this area and will be happy to assess your needs and identify the best route for you.

As with most things in life, think accountant, doctor, electrician, it is possible to do it yourself if your suitably qualified and competent. You can complete your own visa application if you feel you have the required understanding of the Home Office rules, requirements and specified evidence thresholds. However, it is not ordinarily recommended if you are not totally comfortable with understanding and satisfying UKVI immigration rules.

It is worth noting that this type of visa is the most refused visa type out of all categories.

Almost every visa has an associated processing government application fee.

It is important to note that this is an administrative fee that you will be charged for the application to be processed irrespective of the outcome.

In the event that you have made an inadequate application or are refused, the processing fee would have already been utilised and therefore, it will not be refunded.

Aside from the application fees, a refusal is likely to have far reaching implications both practical and financial.

If you do not have a strong history of previous compliant visits to the UK, it is unlikely you will be granted a visa for longer than 6 months initially

The Home Office application fee for a Creative Visit Visa is currently £100 for stays up to six months.

Creative Visit Visa that are valid for 2 years, 5 years, or 10 years will cost you £376, £670, or £837, respectively, at the Home Office.

Please note, the above fees are administrative only and do not cover our professional fees for legal representation.

We provide a full representation service for one transparent, affordable fee to handle your entire case.

Creative Worker visa

There are various types of visas that you can take to travel to the UK. The creative worker visa is one of them and is for temporary work in the countries of the United Kingdom.

The creative worker visa is the visa with which an individual can go to the UK for short-term work. This permit is valid for 12 months in the creative sector.

A creative worker is an overseas individual who contributes uniquely to the UK’s creative sector. The creative work can be an actor, dancer, musician, fashion model, or film crew.

Requirements For A Creative Worker Visa

To get the creative worker visa, you must meet the eligibility criteria set by the UK Visas and Immigration department. The requirements are as follows:-

  • You must have a job offer as creative work from an employer with a temporary Work – creative worker visa sponsor license.
  • Your employer must issue a certificate of sponsorship in your name explaining your job roles.
  • Your minimum salary for this temporary work should meet the amount set by Equity, PACT, or BECTU.
  • You need to have enough funds to support yourself during your stay in the UK.
  • You need to have a Tuberculosis certificate if required.
  • You need to have an Electronic Travel Authorization if demanded.

It is important to remember that the creative worker visa for temporary work in the UK is valid for the time mentioned in your COS or 12 months. If you wish to extend your creative worker visa, you can stay in the UK for not more than 24 months if you work for the same employer.

There is no need to pass any English Language Test to get a creative worker ticket to the UK. Hence, the visa is an opportunity to work and study in the UK without IELTS .

To apply for the creative worker visa, you should fill out the online visa application form from the official site of the UK government. You need to submit your biometric information as proof of your identity. Moreover, you need to pay the visa application fee of 259 pounds.

Creative Visit Visa

You can apply for a Skilled Worker visa to work in the UK in an eligible job with an employer licenced as a sponsor by the UK government.

Can I apply for the UK Skilled Worker visa?

We can help you. It’s what we do.

You can apply for a Skilled Worker visa to work in the UK in an eligible job with an employer licenced as a sponsor by the UK government. This UK work visa has replaced the Tier 2 (General) work visa. This category is for all foreign nationals who have been offered a skilled job to fill a gap in the workforce which cannot be filled by an already settled worker in the UK. There are a number of complex scenarios which should be discussed and explored in detail before you can apply.

International Sportspersons visa

This category is for highly skilled sportspersons who must be recognised by a governing body as an elite sports person or a sports coach. The applicant must demonstrate that their employment in the UK will encourage the sport to become more elite and prominent in the UK.

To apply for ILR you must have spent continuous period of 5 years in the UK and must have spent no more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12 months. You must also meet the English language requirement, pass the Life in the UK test and meet the salary threshold requirement of at least £35,800.

Indefinite leave to remain

The skilled worker visa lasts for up to five years. If you want to stay longer, you can apply to extend your, as long as you still meet the eligibility requirements. After five years, you may also be entitled to apply for indefinite leave to remain, which gives you the right to live, work and study in the UK for as long as you like. You must apply to extend or update your skilled work visa UK if you change jobs or employer.

To apply for ILR you must have spent continuous period of five years in the UK and must have spent no more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12 months. You must also meet the English language requirement, pass the Life in the UK test and meet the salary threshold requirement of at least £25,600 per year.

The Creative Visit Visa is ideal for applicants who intend to come to the UK, to work in the creative sector. This usually is ideal for someone who wishes to visit the UK for a temporary period of up to 6 months. Please note, that this visa route does not lead to settlement in the UK and all visitors who decide to travel as part of a group, must make a separate application.

Under this route, you may apply if you are able to demonstrate that you are going to undertake permitted creative activities on a short-term basis of up to 6 months. You would need to satisfy the Home Office, that you are an overseas national who is a creative worker and is looking to make a unique contribution to the UK’s rich and diverse cultural life – this may include a variety of talents as an entertainer, actor or dancer, musician and any technical or support staff recognised as the applicant’s entourage. This visa route is also open to those who work in modelling and are looking to contribute to the UK’s fashion industry.

This route, like the other sub-categories, involves a range of a requirements that the applicant must satisfy to be considered for this pathway. These requirements include the following:

  • To provide evidence that you are a visa national.
  • You are genuinely seeking entry to the UK for creative intentions.
  • You do not plan to undertake any prohibited activities.
  • You have sufficient funds to cover all reasonable costs in relation to your visit (this may include accommodation, maintenance, and travel costs) without relying on public funds.
  • You do not plan to leave the UK at the end of your visit.
  • You will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits or plan to make the UK your main residence.
  • Your application does not fall for refusal under the general grounds for refusal.
  • You have obtained an Electronic Travel Authorisation, if required.

Regarding the permitted activities under this route, the applicant must be able to prove their reason for entry as a creative worker. Additionally, you will need to show the Home Office that you do plan to leave the UK after the duration of your visit. In assessing your application, the Home Office will likely consider the following factors:

  • Your previous immigration history, including visits to the UK and other countries.
  • Your financial circumstances.
  • Evidence of your personal and economic ties to your country of residence.

The current processing time can take roughly 3 weeks to process if they have applied from outside the UK and 8 weeks if they have applied from within the UK. It is highly recommended that the applicant applies for a Creative Worker visa up to 3 months before the date they intend to commence work in the UK. This date will be listed on their sponsorship licence.

A Creative Visit Visa may be valid for 6 months, 2 years, 5 years of 10 years. This will vary depending on your circumstance and whether you choose to extend your visa route . However, each visit to the UK must not exceed 6 months.

Currently, the application fee to apply for a Creative Visit visa is £259, where the fee is equivalent whether the applicant decides to apply from inside or outside the UK. The same fee also applies to the dependents of the principal applicant or primary visa-holder.

Please note, that the applicant together with any partner and children, will also need to pay the immigration health surcharge, which is set at £624 per year for an adult and £470 per year for a child.

One of the main benefits of this route, is that qualifying dependents of an eligible worker can accompany or join to follow them. This means that the spouse, partner of children under 18 of the main applicant can either apply at the same time or later – please note, that although this is the case, their visa will end at the same time.

It’s crucial that the dependents apply separately and meet the eligibility requirements – this will vary for each dependent for example:

  • For the spouse or civil partner of an eligible worker, they must be able to demonstrate that they are in a marriage or civil partnership that is recognised in the UK.
  • Similarly, if it is an unmarried partner, they must show that they have been living together in a relationship for at least two years prior to the date of their application.
  • Any partner and children will need to provide proof that they are self-sufficient during their stay in the UK – funds of £285 will be needed for a spouse/partner and £315 for the first dependent child and £200 for any other dependent child unless they have been in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months.

The application process entails an online application being submitted by the applicant, using the unique reference number from their sponsorship certificate, where this certificate will only be valid for a period of 3 months from the date it is assigned to them.

Once their application has been successfully submitted below, the applicant will need to provide supporting documentation to prove their identity. Depending on the applicant, they may be able to prove their identity using the UK Immigration: ID Check app, or they may need to attend an in-person appointment to successfully enrol their biometric information.

If required to prove their identity via the second route, the applicant will find out if an appointment is required when they start their visa application. If they are applying from outside the UK and need to attend an appointment, this will be possible at an overseas visa application centre. On the other hand, if they are applying from within the UK, the appointment will be at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services service point.

Please be aware that, switching into the Creative Visit route from within the UK is generally not permitted. The only exception would be if the individual has, or last had, permissions as a visitor and has been in the UK undertaking permitted creative sector activities. Also, if they were assigned a valid CoS on the Creative Worker route before, they entered the UK, then this would also be considered.

In addition, the skilled worker must have the required skills and experience to undergo the role in the company and have the required level of English language ability.

The minimum salary for the Skilled Worker visa is either £25,600 per year, £10.10 per hour or the “going rate” for the particular occupation code, whichever is highest. For each job on the Home Office occupation list , there is a “going rate” which details the recommended annual and hourly salary that an individual must earn for the role. The rates are based on a 39-hour week of work. Those applying for the Skilled Worker visa need 50 points to do so. These are gained from sponsorship, skill level and English language requirements. However, 20 further tradable points can be given to those that meet the minimum salary requirement.

You cannot move to the UK without a job offer from a company that has a UK sponsor licence, unless you apply for the Global Talent visa where this is not a requirement. When you are applying for a Skilled Worker visa you must provide a certificate of sponsorship reference number which proves that you have a job offer and therefore permission to work in the UK with a registered sponsor.

The general Skilled Worker visa requirements are that you must have a job offer from a company that is a UK-registered sponsor and have a certificate of sponsorship that confirms that you have permission to work in the UK within a specific job role. You must be paid the required minimum salary for the occupation, have the required skill level and English language ability to do the job and have enough funds to support yourself in the UK.

Once all the correct documentation has been submitted, it takes around 3 weeks for an application for a Skilled Worker visa to be processed by the Home Office when applying outside of the UK. For applications within the UK, the standard processing time is 8 weeks, although this can take around 9 weeks on average.

For the Skilled Worker visa, you will need to provide a valid passport and proof that you have a job in the UK with details about your job role, salary, and employer information. You will also need the reference number for your certificate of sponsorship which proves that you have an approved job offer with a registered UK sponsor. In addition, you will need to provide bank statements that show you are able to support yourself in the UK and proof of the required qualifications needed for the role such as an English language test and degree certificate.

Yes, you can study whilst on a Skilled Worker visa. There is no restriction on the number of hours you can study as long as it does not interfere with your work. Another requirement is that workers who study must first get an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate for their studies and present it to the education provider.

Skilled Workers are not allowed to run their own businesses.

UK: Permitted Paid Engagement Visa Application Guide 2023

View Paul Richmond Biography on their website

Performing artists and entertainers may be eligible for several types of UK visas to work or perform in the UK, depending on the specific circumstances of their engagement.

In this application guide we look at the Permitted Paid Engagement (PPE) visa , including the requirements of the Permitted Paid Engagement visa route, how to apply for a PPE visa, top tips for a successful application and frequently asked questions regarding the Permitted Paid Engagement visa route. We also take a brief look at a number of alternative options for artists and entertainers who wish to work or perform in the UK.

What Is a Permitted Paid Engagement Visa?

A Permitted Paid Engagement visa is a type of visa issued by the UK government that allows individuals to enter the UK for a short-term engagement to undertake paid work or activities related to their profession or expertise.

The Permitted Paid Engagement visa is usually granted for up to one month. The visa is designed for people who are invited to come to the UK for a short-term engagement, such as a performing artist, conference speaker, an academic guest lecturer, or an expert in a specific field who needs to provide services to a UK-based organisation.

The Permitted Paid Engagement visa is different from a work visa, as it does not allow the individual to take up employment in the UK on a long-term basis, nor does it lead to permanent residency or citizenship.

Requirements for a Permitted Paid Engagement Visa

To be eligible for a Permitted Paid Engagement (PPE) visa, an individual must meet the following requirements:

  • They must be invited by a UK-based organisation or individual to undertake a specific paid engagement in the UK;
  • The engagement must relate to their area of expertise or profession, and the individual must have the necessary skills, qualifications, and experience to carry out the engagement;
  • The engagement must be for no longer than one month, although it can be extended up to a year in certain circumstances;
  • The individual must have enough money to support themselves during their stay in the UK, and they must not intend to work in the UK in any other capacity;
  • They must be able to demonstrate that they will leave the UK at the end of their stay;
  • They must not have a criminal record or pose a threat to national security;
  • They must have a valid passport, and in some cases, they may be required to provide additional documentation, such as a letter of invitation from the UK-based organisation or individual inviting them to the UK.

It is important to note that the eligibility requirements for a PPE visa can vary depending on the specific circumstances of the individual and the nature of the engagement they have been invited to undertake in the UK. It is recommended to consult a qualified immigration lawyer for the most up-to-date information and guidance.

It is important to note that the application process for a Permitted Paid Engagement visa can vary depending on the specific circumstances of the individual and the nature of the engagement they have been invited to undertake in the UK. Top Tips for Applying for a Permitted Paid Engagement Visa

Here are some top tips for those considering applying for a PPE visa:

  • Check if you are eligible: To be eligible for a Permitted Paid Engagement visa, you must be invited to the UK by a UK-based organisation or client to undertake specific paid work engagements. You must also have the necessary skills and experience to carry out the work;
  • Plan ahead: You should apply for a PPE visa at least one month before your intended travel date to the UK. This will give you enough time to gather all the necessary documents and make any necessary arrangements;
  • Provide accurate information: When filling out your Permitted Paid Engagement visa application form, ensure that you provide accurate and up-to-date information. Any incorrect or incomplete information could result in your application being rejected;
  • Prepare your supporting documents carefully: You will need to provide supporting documents to prove your eligibility for a Permitted Paid Engagement, such as a letter of invitation from your UK-based client or organisation, evidence of your work experience and qualifications, and evidence of your travel plans and accommodation arrangements;
  • Show proof of financial support: You will need to show that you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay in the UK, as the PPE visa does not allow you to access public funds. You may need to provide bank statements or other evidence of financial support;
  • Be prepared for an interview: As part of the Permitted Paid Engagement visa application process, you may be asked to attend an interview at a UK Visa Application Centre. Be prepared to answer questions about your work and travel plans;
  • Keep your travel plans flexible: While the Permitted Paid Engagement visa allows you to come to the UK for a specific engagement, you may want to consider keeping your travel plans flexible in case you need to extend your stay or undertake additional work engagements.

Overall, the key to a successful Permitted Paid Engagement visa application is to plan ahead, provide accurate information and prepare your supporting documents carefully.

UK Visa & Immigration Routes for Creative Artists

Paul Richmond

The UK has a range of immigration routes that provide both temporary and long-term opportunities for international artists, entertainers and musicians (and their personal and technical staff) to participate in creative activities in the UK.

The main immigration routes open to creative artists are:

Creative Visit Visa

Permitted paid engagement visit visa, temporary work – creative worker visa, skilled worker visa, global talent visa – arts & culture, global talent visa – film & television.

Guide To Immigration Routes For Artists & Entertainers

The Creative Visit Visa  is for amateur and professional artists, entertainers and musicians (and their personal and technical staff) who wish to visit the UK to undertake permitted unpaid creative activities for a period of up to 6 months.

The route does not lead to settlement in the UK and all visitors must make a separate application, even when travelling as part of a group.

An artist is defined as anyone coming to the UK to undertake an activity that is connected to the arts (literature, performing arts, visual arts, culinary arts).  Examples include, but are not limited to, poets, film crew (including crew for online media content, for example YouTube), photographers, designers, artists, musicians, writers and conductors. Both amateur and professional artists can qualify for a Creative Visit Visa.

An entertainer is anyone coming to the UK to undertake an activity that is connected to the performing arts, for example dancers, comedians, members of circus acts, members of film crew or those participating in e-sport competitions.

Personal or technical staff or members of the production team who are attending the same event as an artist, entertainer or musician can also qualify for a Creative Visit Visa provided they are employed to work for the artist, entertainer or musician outside the UK. Examples include, but are not restricted to, choreographers, stage managers, make-up artists, personal bodyguards and press officers.

In order to qualify for a Creative Visit Visa you will need to satisfy UK Visas & Immigration that you are genuinely seeking entry to the UK for a purpose that is permitted by the visitor routes and will not undertake any prohibited activities.

Artists, entertainers and musicians may undertake the following permitted activities with permission as a Creative Visitor:

  • Give performances as an individual or as part of a group;
  • Take part in competitions or auditions;
  • Make personal appearances and take part in promotional activities;
  • Take part in one or more cultural events or festivals on the  Permit Free Festival List .

Film crew (actor, producer, director or technician) employed by an overseas company may visit the UK on a Creative Visit Visa to take part in a location shoot for a film or programme or other media content that is produced and financed overseas.

Creative Visitors are not permitted to work in the UK or, with few exceptions, receive payment from a UK source for any activities undertaken in the UK.

However, artists, entertainers and musicians visiting the UK can receive payment for performances at one or more of the festivals listed on the  Permit Free Festival list .

If you wish to enter the UK for the purpose of a Creative Visit you may apply for a Visit Visa that is valid for either 6 months, 2 years, 5 years or 10 years.  You may enter and leave the UK multiple times during the validity period of your Visit Visa, unless your Visit Visa is endorsed for a single or dual entry. However, each visit to the UK must not exceed 6 months.

The Permitted Paid Engagement (PPE) Visit Visa is available to professional artists, entertainers and musicians who wish to visit the UK for up to 1 month in order to undertake a paid engagement relating to their profession.

For example, an artist may enter the UK as a PPE Visitor to give a paid performance and also present their work to other professionals or the public.

The Permitted Paid Engagement Visa route does not lead to settlement in the UK and all visitors must make a separate application, even when travelling as part of a group.

To qualify for a Permitted Paid Engagement Visa, artists, entertainers and musicians must be able to demonstrate that the engagement relates to their full-time profession. This will need to be confirmed through documentary evidence such as publicity material for performances, screenings, concerts, talks, readings and exhibitions, media coverage and reviews, awards and proof of recent performances.

Artists, entertainers and musicians must be invited by a creative (arts or entertainment) organisation, agent or broadcaster based in the UK.  A creative organisation is any organisation involved in artistic and entertainment activities.  For example, galleries, arts faculties or departments in universities and schools, and venues involved in producing or staging of events will all be regarded as creative organisations. Embassies putting on cultural events related to the country concerned will also qualify. UK based agents and broadcasters can also invite individuals to undertake a paid engagement in the UK.

Permitted Paid Engagement Visit Visas are valid for 1 month and Permitted Paid Engagement Visitors are permitted to undertake the paid engagement that was declared as part of their entry clearance application.

The Temporary Work – Creative Worker Visa is for individuals who have been offered short-term work in the UK for up to 12 months within the creative sector.

The Creative Worker visa is not a route to settlement, but applicants can extend their stay up to a maximum of two years with the same employer.

A creative worker is someone who can make a unique contribution to the UK’s creative industries, for example, as an actor, dancer, musician, entertainer, fashion model or film crew.  Technical or support staff (‘entourage’) may accompany eligible creative workers.

In order to obtain a Temporary Work – Creative Worker Visa you will need to have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship issued by a Home Office approved sponsor for the job you are applying to undertake in the UK.  Your sponsor will need to hold a valid Temporary Work – Creative Worker sponsor licence.

Your sponsor will be operating in the creative sector.  Examples include, but are not limited to: a national arts body, an events organiser, a producer, a venue, an agent, a promoter or promotion company, a production company or a media organisation.  Your sponsor may or may not be your direct employer.

You will need to be paid a minimum salary as set by Equity, PACT or BECTU (except for models, musicians or circuses).

If your Temporary Work – Creative Worker Visa application is successful you will be permitted to enter and remain in the UK for either 12 months, or the time stated on your Certificate of Sponsorship plus up to 14 days before and after the period of leave granted, whichever is shorter.

Creative Workers who wish to continue working for the same sponsor may apply to extend their stay for up to a maximum  of 24 months.  Creative workers who wish to change employers may only stay in the UK for a maximum of 12 months.

If your application for a Temporary Work – Creative Worker Visa is successful you will be able to work for your sponsor in the job described on your Certificate of Sponsorship.  You will also be able to have a second job in the same sector and at the same level as your main job for up to 20 hours per week and do a job on the Skilled Worker shortage occupation list for up to 20 hours per week.

If you are not a national or citizen of a country or territorial entity listed in  Immigration Rules Appendix Visitor: Visa national list (i.e. you are an EU, EEA and Swiss citizen or other non-visa national), you have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship from an approved sponsor for the Creative Worker route and the total length of your paid engagement or engagements in the UK will be 3 months or less then you may qualify to travel to the UK without a visa and instead ask for permission to enter when you arrive at the UK border under the Temporary Work – Creative Worker visa concession.  However, those who enter the UK for up to 3 months under the Creative Worker Visa Border Concession cannot extend their stay in the UK on the Creative Worker route.

The Skilled Worker Visa is open to individuals of all nationalities who have an offer of an eligible skilled job in the UK from a Home Office-approved sponsor.  The route can lead to settlement.

In order to obtain a Skilled Worker Visa you must have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship for the job you are planning to do.  Your Certificate of Sponsorship will need to have been issued by an employer that is authorised by the Home Office to sponsor the job in question under the Skilled Worker route.

The job you are being sponsored for must be an eligible job at or above a minimum skill level. Under the Skilled Worker Visa route, the role you are looking to fill must be skilled to at least RQF level 3, which is roughly equivalent to A-levels. You do not need to hold a formal qualification in order to satisfy the skills level requirement. It is the skill level of the job that you will be doing that will determine whether the threshold is met.

The following creative jobs are eligible for the Skilled Worker route:

  • Artist, Illustrator, Portrait painter, Sculptor;
  • Author, Copywriter, Editor (books), Writer;
  • Actor, Disc jockey, Entertainer, Presenter (broadcasting), Singer;
  • Dancer, Ballet dancer, Choreographer, Dance teacher;
  • Arts officer, Producer, Director, Film editor, Production assistant (broadcasting), Studio manager, Television producer, Theatrical agent;
  • Photographer, Audio visual technician, Cameraman, Projectionist, Sound engineer, Theatre technician (entertainment);

In most cases an applicant for a Skilled Worker Visa must be paid a salary which equals or exceeds £25,600 a year and 100% of the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher. The assessment of salary is based on guaranteed basic gross pay. Some sponsored skilled workers applying under the Skilled Worker route may be paid less than the above amount, where they are awarded additional so-called ‘tradable points’ for other attributes.

For example, if you have a job offer for a job in a shortage occupation you may be paid a salary which equals or exceeds both £20,480 per year and 80% of the going rate for the occupation.

The following creative jobs are on the Shortage Occupation List and so applicants may qualify for a Skilled Worker Visa if they are are paid at least £20,480 per year and 80% of the going rate for the occupation:

  • Skilled classical ballet dancers and skilled contemporary dancers;
  • Skilled orchestral musicians;
  • Arts officers, Producers and Directors;

In order to qualify for a Skilled Worker Visa you will need to demonstrate English language ability on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in all 4 components (reading, writing, speaking and listening) to at least level B1 (intermediate).

If your application for a Skilled Worker Visa is approved you will be granted entry clearance or permission to stay for a period ending 14 days after the end date of your Certificate of Sponsorship (which may be up to a maximum of 5 years after the start date of your Certificate of Sponsorship).

After 5 years in the Skilled Worker route you may be eligible to apply for indefinite leave to remain.

Skilled Worker Visa holders are permitted to work in the job they have been sponsored for.  They may also undertake supplementary employment provided they continue to work in the job for which they are being sponsored.

The  Global Talent Visa – Arts & Culture route is open to talented and promising individuals in the fields of arts and culture wishing to work in the UK.  Applicants will be leaders in their field, or have the potential to be leaders, as determined by Arts Council England.

The Global Talent route does not require a job offer and can lead to settlement in the UK.

In order to qualify for an Arts and Culture endorsement by Arts Council England you will need to be professionally engaged in producing work of outstanding quality which has been performed, presented, distributed or exhibited internationally.

You must have been regularly engaged as a professional practitioner in your field within the last 5 years and be able to show a substantial track record in more than one country (if applying on the basis of Exceptional Talent) or a developing track record in one or more countries (if applying on the basis of Exceptional Promise).

Once you have received your Arts Council endorsement, you will have a period of three months from the date of the endorsement letter to make your application to enter or remain in the UK in the Global Talent category.

If you have won a qualifying prestigious award, you will be able to fast-track the endorsement application and instead proceed directly to making a single visa application.

Global Talent visa applicants can choose how much leave, in whole years, up to a maximum of 5 years, they wish to be granted in a single application.

Global Talent Visa – Arts & Culture migrants who are endorsed under the “exceptional talent” criteria by Arts Council England are eligible to apply for indefinite leave to remain after spending a continuous period of 3 years in the UK. Applicants who are endorsed under the “exceptional promise” criteria for Arts Council England need to spend a continuous period of 5 years in the UK before being eligible to apply for settlement.

The  Global Talent Visa – Film & Television route is open to talented individuals in the fields of film and television wishing to work in the UK.  Applicants will be leaders in their field as determined by the Producers’ Alliance for Film and Television (PACT) acting on behalf of Arts Council England.

Individuals who work in the film, television, animation, post production and visual effects industries will need to demonstrate ‘exceptional talent’.  PACT does not endorse ‘exceptional promise’ applications.

The criteria for an endorsement by PACT within the film, television, animation, postproduction and visual effects industries all essentially relate to recognition by awards.

Once you have your PACT endorsement, you will have a period of three months from the date of the endorsement letter to make your application to enter or remain in the UK in the Global Talent category.

Global Talent Visa – Film & Television migrants who have been endorsed by PACT are eligible to apply for indefinite leave to remain after spending a continuous period of 3 years in the UK.
