The cause of the accident is still unclear and Miami Dade police are investigating.

Passenger Matt Davis filmed the shocking footage of a sheet of blood running down the front of the elevator on the ship’s 10th floor as he and his family were heading to dinner.

“I’d describe it as the nightmare after Christmas,” he told Fox 4 . “To look and see the elevator with blood coming down like a sheet, and not stopping. It was a real-life scene of The Shining .”

Mr Davis and his wife told the news station it “sounded like a rainstorm”, and they could “smell the blood”. “No that can’t be right,” a man says in the video. “No. That’s not possible.”

He said there appeared to be another man working inside the lift, who “ran through the blood that was coming down” to get out.

“One of the crew people from Carnival was trying to get people to go back towards the restaurant,” Mr Davis said.

The area was soon cordoned off. Picture: Fox 4/Matt Davis

A crew member can be heard asking in the video: “Come inside please ... A man was working on the elevator up there.”

Forty-five minutes later, the area was sectioned off with the elevator covered in a white sheet, and a sign reading: “Sorry, but I’m not working at the moment.”

Mr Davis added: “A crew member, somebody was inside, behind that wall when the elevator came down. I don’t know what happened in there but something terrifying happened. I couldn’t wait to get off the ship.”

Carnival spokeswoman Jayme Eglin told news.com.au: “At approximately 6.15pm US eastern time on Sunday, December 27, a crew member on board the Carnival Ecstasy died while working on an elevator.

“The company extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family and loved ones of our team member. Our CareTeam is providing support. Appropriate authorities have been notified and a full investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.”

Carnival has offered to pay for three counselling sessions for the Davis family.

A couple has described the moment they discovered the body of a dead crew member on board a Caribbean cruise ship in the US.

Jose Sandoval Opazo, 66, was an electrician on board Carnival Ecstasy when he was killed while working on an elevator. The cruise was on its final leg of a three-day journey out of Miami.

Matt Davis, who was on his way to dinner with his wife, told CCN affiliate WFTX he saw the elevator “with blood coming down like a sheet, and not stopping”.

In a video captured by the couple, a man can be heard shouting, “No, that can’t be right! No, that’s not possible!”, and a crew member tries to usher them into the restaurant.

Mr Davis described how another passenger was inside the elevator when the incident happened and compared the experience to a scene out of 1980s horror movie 'The Shining'.

World's biggest cruise ship goes on display

Carnival Corporation , which owns the cruise line, confirmed a crew member had died while working on an elevator.

The company has had a number of high-profile disasters with their ships in the past few years, including the capsizing of the Costa Concordia in 2012, and an on-board fire that knocked power out in the Carnival Triumph for four days.

Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen told CNN the authorities were aware of the incident and a full investigation is underway.

“The company extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family and loved ones of our team member,” he said.

Couple shows video of ‘bloody mystery’ on Carnival Cruise ship

A crew member on a Caribbean cruise ship died while working on an elevator, the company said.

Passengers aboard the Carnival Ecstasy witnessed part of the horrifying incident Sunday evening in which blood poured down the front of the elevator.

Matt Davis and his wife were on their way to dinner when they came across the gory scene.

“To look and see the elevator with just blood coming down like a sheet, and not stopping … it was a real life scene of ‘The Shining,'” Davis told CNN affiliate WFTX, referring to the 1980 horror movie.

As the couple looked on aghast at the flowing blood, which they said sounded like a rainstorm, a crew member was trying to usher people back inside the restaurant.

‘Something terrifying happened’

Davis and his wife took photos and video of what they saw on their cell phones. In one clip they shared with WFTX, a man can be heard shouting, “No, that can’t be right! No, that’s not possible!”

The elevator was eventually sealed off, Davis said, with a sign that read, “Sorry, but I’m not working at the moment.”

He said crew members told him that an electrician had been working on the elevator.

“A crew member or somebody was inside or behind that wall when the elevator came down, and I don’t know what happened, but something terrifying happened,” he told WFTX.

A spokesman for Carnival, Vance Gulliksen, told CNN that a crew member died Sunday on the ship while working on an elevator.

‘I couldn’t wait to get off the ship’

“The company extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family and loved ones of our team member,” Gulliksen said Wednesday, adding that it was providing support.

“Appropriate authorities have been notified and a full investigation into the cause of the accident is underway,” he said. The ship was on the final leg of a 3-day cruise from Miami when it happened.

Gulliksen didn’t provide the name of the deceased employee, but the Miami-Dade Police Department identified him to WFTX as 66-year-old Jose Sandoval Opazo, an electrician on the ship.

Carnival Corporation, which owns the cruise line, has experienced a number high-profile problems on its ships in recent years, including the capsizing of the Costa Concordia off the coast of Italy in 2012 and a crippling fire on the Carnival Triumph in 2013.

For Davis and his family, what had started as a happily memorable trip on the Carnival Ecstasy became one they wished they could forget.

“I couldn’t wait to get off the ship,” he said. “I just wanted to get off.”

A Charlotte family said they were front and center for a gruesome death that has captivated the nation and it's an image they'll not soon forget.

Previous story:   'Blood coming down like a sheet:' Couple witnesses cruise ship horror

Sara Robinson and her family were on the Carnival Ecstasy cruise ship where an electrician was killed while working on an elevator during the final leg of a three-day cruise.

Miami-Dade police Det. Marjorie Eloi said Jose Sandoval Opazo, 66, of Liguria, Italy, died Sunday as a result of an apparent accident. In a news release, she said he was an electrician on the 2,056-passenger cruise ship.

Robinson and her family were on the ship and came upon the scene shortly after the accident.

**WARNING: THE DETAILS MAY BE CONSIDERED TOO GRAPHIC FOR SOME VIEWERS**

She said the family was headed to late dining when they heard a person scream.

"We looked to our left, over at the elevator and there was blood all over the carpeting and down the elevator sides," she said. "There was one other family and the woman had her hands over her mouth."

Robinson said the restaurant's maître d' began to usher them into the restaurant.

"You could actually hear the dripping of the blood coming down, which made us all sick to our stomach," she said.

The family went into dinner and kept asking crew members what happened, but didn't get any answers.

Robinson said she went to the restroom about 30 minutes later and the area had been roped off.

"There was a sign and all it said was that the elevators weren't working," she said.

Robinson then went to other floors on the ship to see if other elevators were blocked off. Within another 30 minutes, she said the entire portion of the ship was blocked off.

"It was terrible. They wouldn't tell us what happened," she said. "Over the loud speaker they said 'we need the emergency medical team to come immediately.' But still, no guests really knew what was going on except the three or four families that saw what was coming out of the elevator and the noise and everything that happened."

Robinson said her family has been on more than 20 Carnival cruises, but they were ready for this one to end.

"I was excited to get off that boat on Monday and I know my whole family was," she said.

Robinson said she called Carnival on Monday and heard back from the company's guest services, but wasn't happy with their response.

"I don't know that I want to go on another Carnival cruise. To see all of that, and to not be even treated any differently. Seeing how traumatic it was. I mean, we saw a lot of blood to the point that we knew that someone on the cruise could not fix what had just happened."

"I knew it wasn't minor," she recalled. "I was thinking maybe he lost an arm or a leg. I had a hunch that it was a crew member, but I did not know that it would be as big as a death."

Police and the cruise line are investigating the cause and have released no further details. In a statement, the Miami-based cruise line says the accident occurred on an elevator.

The company said a full investigation is underway.

Robinson and her family have another cruise booked for May, but she's not sure they will be getting on the boat.

Man possibly crushed by elevator on cruise ship

A Florida family said their Christmas cruise took a horrifying turn, revealing the video and photos of a bloody mystery onboard the ship.

The family boarded the Carnival Ecstasy on Christmas Day for a spur-of-the-moment trip and told WFTX news the first two nights of their cruise were everything they thought it would be.

But they described the last night as a scene out of a horror movie.

Matt Davis and his wife Susan showed WFTX pictures and video of what looked to be blood pouring out of the top of the elevator as the doors were struggling to open and close. "To look and see the elevator with just blood coming down like a sheet, and not stopping... it was a real-life scene of 'The Shining'," Matt Davis said.

The couple said time stood still, it sounded like a rainstorm, and they could smell the blood.

They said they were heading to dinner on the 10th floor of the ship Sunday night when they saw the horrifying scene. "One of the crew people from Carnival was trying to get people to go back to the restaurant," Davis said.

You can hear a woman shouting "Come inside please!" in the couple's video.

The couple said a man was inside the elevator and had to run through the dripping blood to get out.

Forty-five minutes later, Davis said the area near the elevator was sectioned off with a sign that read, "Sorry, but I'm not working at the moment."

He said a waiter told him an electrician got hurt, and later a Carnival supervisor said he passed away. In the video, you can hear a woman saying "the man was working on the elevator up there."

"A crew member or somebody was inside or behind that wall when the elevator came down, and I don't know what happened, but something terrifying happened," Davis said.

WFTX reached out to Miami-Dade Police, which is investigating the incident. A spokesperson said in an email the victim was 66-year-old Jose Sandoval Opazo, an electrician aboard the ship.

She also said he died Sunday night, and the cause is still under investigation.

"I couldn't wait to get off the ship. I just wanted to get off," Davis said.

WFTX reached out to Carnival Headquarters to learn more about the cleaning process and if the ship is still being used, but have yet to hear back.

The family said Carnival offered to pay for them to go to three counseling sessions.

Video shows bloody elevator after worker’s death on Carnival Ecstasy

FLORIDA — What was supposed to be a fun in the sun Christmas getaway, instead turned into a nightmare trip that resembled a scene from a horror movie.

Oceania cruise ship rescues 68 migrants from stalled fishing boat, 6 dead

M ADRID - A luxury cruise ship  rescued 68 migrants trying to reach the Spanish Canary Islands in a fishing boat that had stalled in rough seas, Spanish authorities and the cruise operator said on Thursday.

Six people died in the incident.

The archipelago has become the main point of entry to Spain for illegal migrants from Africa in recent years and the route is also the deadliest. Migration rights group Walking Borders said last week that nearly 5,000 migrants died at sea on that route during the first five months of 2024.

Bulk carrier Philipp Oldendorff sighted the boat adrift 440 nautical miles (815 km) south of the island of Tenerife on Wednesday and provided first assistance to the migrants, while the Insignia cruise ship was diverted to the area to pick up the survivors, the Spanish Coast Guard said in a statement.

The Insignia, which is owned by Miami-based  Oceania Cruises , also recovered three bodies from the boat. Bad weather prevented the recovery of another two bodies so the ship left a locating device to facilitate the search.

The small luxury cruise ship, which has a capacity of 670 passengers, is undertaking a 180-day trip around the world that started in January.

"Safety of life at sea is of paramount importance for all seafarers," said a spokesperson for Oceania Cruises, which is owned by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

"We can confirm that the Insignia rescued 68 people from a vessel in distress between Cape Verde and Tenerife, brought them onboard for medical assistance and provided food, drinks, clothing and a safe place to rest," the spokesperson added.

A Spanish Coast Guard vessel was en route from the Canary Islands on Thursday to meet the Insignia and then locate the shipwreck.

Cruise Ship Rescues 68 Migrants Near Canary Islands; Five Found Dead

A cruise ship named Insignia rescued 68 migrants and discovered five bodies in a wooden dinghy drifting off the Canary Islands, according to Spain's maritime rescue agency on Thursday.

An oil tanker traveling from northwestern Spain to Brazil spotted the distressed boat on Wednesday, approximately 815 kilometers south of Tenerife, one of the Canaries' seven islands.

Spanish authorities redirected the Insignia to carry out the rescue. While three bodies were recovered, two were left behind due to adverse weather conditions.

Maritime rescue spokesperson highlighted the rarity of such rescues by cruise ships but noted the grave danger posed to the migrants due to their remote location.

Having departed from Mindelo in Cape Verde, the Insignia's operator, Oceania Cruises, headquartered in Miami, has not yet commented on the incident.

The rescue agency indicated that Insignia is projected to dock at Santa Cruz in Tenerife on Friday.

Increasing numbers of migrants undertake hazardous journeys from northwestern Africa to the Canary Islands, seeking better opportunities in Europe. Spain's Interior Ministry reported a record 55,618 migrant arrivals by boat last year, with over 23,000 arrivals so far this year.

As per Caminando Fronteras, over 5,000 migrants have died attempting to reach Spanish coasts this year alone, primarily via the Atlantic route, with the total reaching 6,600 last year.

MIAMI (WOFL FOX 35) - The final night of a Florida couple’s Christmas cruise turned into a holiday horror as they discovered blood running down the doors of an elevator.  Matt Davis and his wife Susan made the shocking discovery on board the Carnival Ecstasy Sunday on their way to dinner. He said a supervisor on the cruise told him an electrician was killed.

"Somebody was inside or behind that wall when the elevator came down, and I don't know what happened, but something terrifying happened," Matt Davis told WFTX-TV. "To look and see the elevator with just blood coming down like a sheet, and not stopping... it was a real life scene of The Shining."

Miami-Dade police Det. Marjorie Eloi says 66-year-old Jose Sandoval Opazo of Liguria, Italy, died Sunday as a result of an apparent accident. In a news release, she said he was an electrician on the 2,056-passenger cruise ship.  The elevator was later sectioned off with a sign that read, "Sorry, but I'm not working at the moment."

In a statement, the Miami-based cruise line said the accident occurred on an elevator. Officials say Carnival's care team is providing support to Opazo's family.  The company says a full investigation is underway.

The couple said Carnival has offered to pay for them to go to counseling sessions.
