What Are Singles Cruises for Seniors?

If you’re a senior who enjoys solo travel and meeting new people, you might want to book a singles cruise. These adventures can be a great way for older adults to enjoy traveling alone at surprisingly affordable prices. Beyond singles cruises, you can also look into general cruise lines that cater to the older set.

Pro Tip: To learn more about my favorite cruises, read my guide to the best cruises for seniors .

The Advantages of Singles Cruises for Seniors

Singles cruises for seniors offer many benefits, such as discounted room prices, wine tasting, and onboard entertainment –– not to mention plenty of opportunities to meet other singles.

Less planning

Since most singles cruises are all-inclusive, you don’t have to worry about last-minute itinerary planning. Most singles cruises provide a day-by-day itinerary with information on daily activities, events, and excursions. For those who want an adventurous time without having to plan, a cruise is a great option. Personally, planning travel makes me anxious, so I love handing the process over to the professionals.

Meeting new people

A singles cruise is designed to cater to people of all ages who are looking to meet new people. If you’re recently divorced or looking for a new relationship, a singles cruise offers an opportunity to meet others in a similar position. These cruises will often have programs like speed dating and dances to help facilitate interactions. Plus, some cruises cater to singles specifically, giving you a discount or “single supplement.”

Courses and events

Singles cruises offer plenty of great activities, such as wine tastings, chef-prepared meals, dancing, pool parties, concerts, and group exercises. All of this helps make it easier to meet new people.

1. Viking Ocean Cruises - Best Overall Value

What we like most:.

  • Wide range of trips
  • Luxurious suites
  • Excellent customer service
  • Risk-free guarantee

Cost: $799+ per person

Viking offers river, ocean, and expedition voyages on all seven continents. I could choose from a variety of cruise destinations, including Scandinavia, Northern Europe, Asia, and Australia. As the world’s leading small-ship cruise line, Viking Ocean Cruises has a fleet of new, state-of-the-art ocean ships, ranging from Viking Star to Viking Saturn. Each ocean ship can carry up to 930 adult guests for an intimate experience and longer overnight stays at ports. With so many adults on a boat, it was easy for me to meet people, especially at meal times.

To book a cruise, I simply visited the Viking website and selected the region, departure date, and duration of my stay. If you’re looking to travel to Scandinavia and Northern Europe for a duration of 12 days, you can choose your sail date and include a promo code to get the best deals. You can also select the number of guests and specify the type of stateroom or suite you would like to book.

Viking Ocean Cruises offers a risk-free guarantee for guests, allowing you to change your cruise date up to 14 days before your departure. Viking will also waive any change fees. Other features of this cruise include spacious veranda staterooms and suites. In addition to a variety of destinations, Viking Ocean Cruises offers special savings on both airfare and cruise costs.

FYI: Cruises aren’t the only way to meet that special someone. Consider trying one of the best dating websites for seniors .

With several destination options ranging from Antarctica, Africa, and South America, seniors can enjoy a fun solo getaway at affordable prices.

With over 28 years in business, Singles Travel International offers great savings on single supplements, free membership, and fun singles cruise meet-and-greets and cocktail hours. Other benefits include an option to find a travel companion and ongoing promotions and discounts.  For example, when I was booking my trip, I could’ve saved thousands by getting a premium membership. This is a good option if you think you want to take cruises more regularly.

Plus, when I signed up for a free membership, I got a $50 discount on my first vacation and free access to its online community for senior singles over the age of 50.

3. Silversea - Luxurious and All-Inclusive

  • Made specifically for seniors
  • Generous all-inclusive options
  • Onboard spas and fitness centers
  • Gourmet dining

Cost: $3,600+ per person

If you’re looking to pamper yourself with a luxury cruise, Silversea provides amazing shore excursions and all-inclusive service covering 900 destinations. Although pricing is on the high side, you can still find plenty of great deals on both airfare and transfers. With Silversea, you can travel and explore new destinations like the Galapagos Islands, Asia, and Alaska –– all while enjoying the views from your luxury oceanview suite.

Booking as a solo traveler, I received a 25 percent single supplement on some voyages, which means a 25 percent discount. Not every cruise line offers this discount, as each room can support two people, typically.

You can choose from all-inclusive cruises or special Silversea Expeditions luxury cruises if you’re looking to travel to remote regions. Some of the benefits of choosing Silversea include complimentary beverages, gourmet dining, shore excursions, and educational lectures on the places you’re visiting. As someone who loves to learn, I found this trip both educational and fun, not to mention delicious.

With Silversea’s all-inclusive offerings, you’ll also enjoy personalized services with butler service for all its suites. Additionally, you’ll have access to a luxurious spa and fitness center, along with a beauty salon and acupuncture services for older adults with arthritis or back pain. It was lovely to have a spa to come home to after a long day exploring!

4. Tauck World Discovery - Great Expeditions

Tauck World Discovery

  • Extensive guided land tours
  • River and ocean cruises
  • Fine dining
  • Panoramic sun decks

Cost: $3,990+ per person

Looking for a solo getaway? Tauck World Discovery offers solo cruise adventures for older adults. Consider booking a solo trip on one of its European River Cruises, with prices starting at $4,390 per person for eight- to 25-day tours. In addition to river and small-ship cruises, Tauck offers guided land tours in destinations like Africa, Canada, Israel and Jordan, and Latin America.

We recommend solo travelers book one of the European River Cruises. For example, I was interested in the longest, Grand European Cruise, a 25-day cruise that hits Amsterdam, Budapest, Vienna, Nuremberg, Regensburg, and Koln. It starts at $13,990. I like this cruise because it will allow me to see nine European countries and stay three nights in Bucharest. Altogether, I am going to see these countries:

  • Netherlands

Other features and benefits of booking a cruise through Tauck is that you’ll enjoy unlimited complimentary beverages, fine dining, and amenities such as a fitness center, spa, and sun deck featuring panoramic views of the river. For the European River Cruises, some of the destinations include the Danube, Douro, and Rhone rivers.

5. Holland America Line - 35-Day Trips

Holland America Line

  • Trips up to 133 days long
  • Helpful smartphone app
  • Onboard casinos
  • Wine tastings

Cost: $499+ per person

With 149 years in business, Holland America Line offers 19 cruise destinations with over 473 ports. If you’re looking for an affordable cruise option, I recommend traveling with Holland America Line. Its Worry-Free Promise program gives guests the chance to change their cruise plans or cancel for any reason up to 30 days before departure if you or a travel party tests positive for COVID-19.

Holland America Line has a fleet of 11 classic ships with destinations and ports in Alaska, Europe, the Panama Canal, Asia, and more. You can choose from seven- to 133-day cruise trips, depending on your destination and travel needs. The longest cruise goes from pole to pole, leaving and departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. If you’re a single senior, you’ll love the amenities the cruise ship offers, such as classical cruise ship music, theatrical shows, concerts, and other live entertainment.

Some of the additional features of this cruise line include spacious suites and staterooms, along with unique dining options and a casino. You can also use its free mobile-friendly app to personalize your cruise experience and browse your planned activities for the day. Depending on the cruise ship you choose, you can also participate in wine tastings and cooking demonstrations.

Did You Know: Before you head for the sea, be sure to have your travel insurance in order.

6. Solos Holidays - Social Activities

Solos Holidays

  • Caters to solo travelers
  • Great onboard entertainment
  • Spacious rooms
  • Ample social activities

Cost: $261+ per person

Solos Holidays caters to solo travelers who enjoy going to exciting destinations while meeting new people. Based in London, this company focuses on “singles holidays” and offers a wide selection of destinations across the globe. Some of the cruise destinations include Europe, Australia, Asia, and Africa.

I recommend going on A Taste of the Fjords. I departed from London and spent seven nights in Norway (prices start at $1,420 per person). On the ship, dining and entertainment options were plentiful, and the destinations — Bergen, Flam, and Stavanger —  were beautiful and picturesque. Plus, as a single, it was nice being with a group of eight and a tour leader, as I didn’t feel lonely. This is one of the more affordable cruise options, which is always appreciated.

7. Cunard - Great Onboard Entertainment

Cunard

  • Low starting prices
  • Orchestra performances
  • Onboard libraries and gyms
  • Planetarium shows

Cost: $699+ per person

Cunard provides luxury cruise services across the globe. In fact, in the past, it has had esteemed guests like Elizabeth Taylor and Charlie Chaplain onboard its ships. Depending on the type of vacation and travel experience you’re looking for, you can anticipate spending around $699 per person for an English cruise to up to $2,199 per person for a Caribbean cruise. This is incredibly affordable, as cruises can cost tens of thousands of dollars, which is not in my budget. Here are the prices I saw when I looked in October 2023:

When you book a cruise with Cunard, you’ll enjoy amenities such as afternoon tea, live orchestra performances, and events moderated by prolific speakers. In addition to spacious open decks and Broadway-style shows, seniors will enjoy a packed itinerary of events and activities.

Other features include twice-daily turndown services, concierge services, personal butlers, great dining options, and complimentary room service. Guests can also enjoy group dance classes, planetarium shows, and access to the library and gym facilities.

We recommend choosing one of its seven-day transatlantic cruises onboard its Queen Mary 2. The best part is you’ll have access to live performances from the Royal Shakespeare Company, along with various accommodations to make your stay enjoyable. Cruises start at $849 per person for a Christmas 2023 voyage.

8. Riviera River Cruises - Great for Solo Travelers

Riviera River Cruises

  • Luxurious amenities
  • Niche destinations
  • Flexible trips

Cost: $899+ per month

Riviera River Cruises offers several river cruises in Europe and other destinations around the world. Solo travelers can expect to pay around $899 to $5,479 for longer-duration trips.

If you enjoy solo traveling without sharing a room, then we’d recommend the Rhine, Strasbourg & Heidelberg River Cruise for Solo Travelers. This eight-day cruise starts at $2,449 per person and features eight guided tours, a live classical quartet recital, daily meals, and five-star services. For this particular cruise, you’ll embark in Cologne and visit destinations like the Rhine Gorge and the historic Mainz port. Plus, there are departures aimed at solo travelers specifically, which start at $2,749 per person. Unfortunately, there’s no single supplement, but there are also no additional fees; I paid the listed price, which was a welcome departure from other cruise lines and their many hidden fees.

When you choose Riviera River Cruises, you’ll enjoy amenities and features like daily morning and afternoon tea and coffee, along with full daily meals, complimentary Wi-Fi, and the option to extend your cruise. Other benefits include access to an expert cruise director and concierge services to help make for an enjoyable stay.

Each ship can carry up to 750 guests, with destinations in Africa, Arabia, Alaska, Asia, and the Mediterranean. The average price with the single supplement ranges from $6,074 per person from Cape Town to Rio De Janeiro to as high as $12,562 for an 18-day cruise from Sydney to Singapore.

Not every cruise line offers discounted prices for singles, so although these prices are on the higher side, they’re a good option for singles who want a more luxurious experience and have the funds for it.

Onboard activities: Look for a cruise that offers a variety of onboard activities that interest you. Some cruises may have a focus on wellness and fitness, while others may offer more cultural and educational activities.

Opportunities to meet other singles: Some cruise lines offer special events and activities for singles to meet and mingle with other single travelers. Look for cruises that offer single events or consider booking through a travel agency that specializes in single cruises.

Size of the ship: The size of the ship can have a big impact on your cruise experience. Some people prefer smaller, more intimate ships, while others enjoy the amenities and activities offered on larger ships. Consider what is important to you and choose a ship size that best suits your needs.

Solo cabins: Many cruise lines now offer solo cabins , which are smaller staterooms designed for single travelers. These cabins are often priced lower than traditional cabins for two and offer more privacy than sharing with a stranger.

Great singles cruises to book and meet fascinating people

Melinda Crow

Start humming the theme song to "The Love Boat" because we're going to do a deep dive into how to find the perfect singles cruises to book if you want to meet people.

Is it possible to meet your forever match on a cruise ship? Absolutely.

An editor I once knew found her true love on an expedition-style cruise. They married within months of returning home and now have two children. Whether it was the thrill of the expedition, the forced digital detox of a remote destination or the close quarters of a small ship, their relationship clearly blossomed on board.

Cruise ships offer a unique way to meet new and often fascinating people, whether you're looking for romance or simply want to enjoy the company of other people vacationing the same way you do.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

There are single cruisers on almost every ship. Some sail solo; others are in friend or family groups. Dining arrangements, onboard activities and port tours make meeting like-minded people easy. Also, it's socially acceptable to strike up conversations with others throughout the ship.

Some cruise lines make it even easier for singles to find each other with solo cabins clustered together and scheduled events for singles.

If you'd like to find companionship at sea, here are our top tips for making the most of a singles cruise.

Tips for making the most of a singles cruise

cruises over 40 days

As on dry land, activities are often the best way to meet people on a cruise. If you love to dance, go where the music is. If water sports are your thing, book a tropical cruise with a schedule of shore excursions that involve snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving and similar activities. Choose tours focused on wildlife watching, historical sites or food and beverage to meet shipmates who enjoy the same.

You'll often find other singles within shore excursion tour groups . However, you can increase your odds by joining social media groups specific to your cruise dates where you can connect pre-cruise with anyone cruising single.

In fact, there are dozens of social media groups dedicated to singles who love to cruise. Some groups focus on specific cruise lines, while others are broader in scope. Either way, they provide an easy opportunity to start a conversation with other singles before you ever set foot on the ship.

Your vessel's daily activity schedule is also a good place to find other singles. Check on the cruise line's app , on the interactive TV in your cabin or in the printed version (if there is one) for planned gatherings of singles, which are often pre-dinner meetups at bars.

A theme cruise is another way to meet people with similar interests. Sailings focus on country music, popular TV shows, wine tasting, crafting and other hobbies and interests. Not only will you likely find plenty of singles ready to mingle, but it might also be easier to strike up a conversation, knowing you have at least one thing in common.

Chartered singles cruises take the work out of finding other singles because you'll travel together in a group, often with a host to organize everyone. On larger ships, the charter will connect you with other group members through planned onboard meals, gatherings and activities. On smaller vessels, the tour company might charter the entire ship, so every passenger is single.

One word of caution here: It's easy to think that meeting someone on a cruise ship takes all the inherent danger out of hanging out with strangers. You're in a confined space surrounded by lots of other people. Sounds safe, right?

While cruising is, overall, incredibly safe, crime on board can happen. Like any form of travel, it's best not to let your guard down, especially if you go off alone with someone you've just met.

Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind when seeking other singles on cruise ships is to start with an appropriate cruise line for your age and lifestyle . Here are some great singles cruises for various age groups to help you get started.

Best cruises for singles over 20

cruises over 40 days

For young singles, cruising can sometimes feel like an expensive way to meet people. To avoid the high cost of single supplements charged to solo travelers in standard cabins meant for at least two people, single cruisers can travel with friends and share a room. (Many cabins can sleep up to four.) Also, you might feel more confident heading to the ship's bars or nightclubs in a group.

Try short three- to five-night cruises on low-cost mainstream lines like Carnival , Norwegian Cruise Line or Royal Caribbean , where you'll find more young adults and more of a party scene . Singles on a budget can also save money cruising on older, smaller ships across the mainstream fleets, which typically have lower cruise fares.

Margaritaville at Sea is another good choice for quick and affordable two-night trips to the Bahamas, though you'll need to find love quickly on such a short cruise.

Twentysomethings who have a larger travel budget and wish to cruise on their own can look for cruise lines with solo cabins. These rooms for one are in limited supply, so they can be priced at a premium and sell out quickly.

Related: The 6 best cruise lines for solo travelers

Our top pick for this age group would be a short Carnival cruise from almost any U.S. departure port.

The price is right, there's plenty of onboard fun designed for this age group (great live bands, nightly karaoke, poolside games, trivia and deck parties). It's also a good way to get your feet wet when it comes to cruising as a young single. Carnival ships have many cabins that can sleep several of your besties if you choose not to go alone.

Best cruises for singles over 30

cruises over 40 days

Cruising singles in their 30s have slightly different vacation needs from their younger peers. Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean and Carnival are all still great choices for this age group, whether you're traveling on your own or with a group of friends.

Another cruise line that works well for young singles is Virgin Voyages , which is child-free and has rooms and activities designed for singles. Its cheeky, nontraditional vibe is a plus for thirtysomethings.

Use the tattoo you got at the onboard tattoo studio as a conversation starter, make friends at an '80s-themed workout class, or chat up your neighbor at an after-hours cabaret or at a communal table in one of the line's many complimentary restaurants.

Related: A beginner's guide to picking a cruise line

Single parents who vacation with their youngsters might want to add Disney Cruise Line to the list. The kids can enjoy amazing supervised programming in the expansive kids club while mom or dad enjoys adult pleasures like wine tastings, fine dining and dancing — all of which could lead to meetups with other single parents on board.

A warm-climate Royal Caribbean cruise with your best buds can be an ideal option for the over-30 set. We recommend one of the line's newest and biggest ships so you have plenty of options for food, entertainment and hangouts to try. From slides and water attractions that get your heart racing to dance clubs open until the wee hours of the night, these ships have plenty to offer young singles and plenty of places to meet new friends.

Singles in their 40s generally are ready for a little less party and a little more romance on a singles cruise. This age group won't be out of place among festive singles on board Virgin Voyages or Carnival, but Celebrity Cruises is another cruise line to consider.

The line's newer Edge Class ships have a younger, hipper ambience than their older ships. Think martini bars, foodie havens and jazz clubs, all with decor that looks nothing like your parents' cruise ships.

For those who like to gamble, try the mainstream cruise lines. The large casinos offer yet another opportunity to meet other singles on board — particularly at the table games. Margaritaville at Sea is another line to consider with plenty of gambling singles on board.

For fortysomething singles looking for onboard romance, we suggest a studio cabin for seven nights on NCL's new Norwegian Viva bound for the Caribbean . There's plenty to do on board and in port to help you meet people.

Additionally, the solo cabins, which have been redone in a more elegant style than on some of the line's older ships, provide access to the Studio Lounge for socializing. The lounge has also been revamped, giving it an upscale feel with free daily snacks and drinks. (Note that Norwegian's cabins for one sell out quickly, so you'll want to book early.)

Another great pick would be Virgin Voyages' four-night Fire and Sunset Soiree sailings from Miami on Scarlet Lady . They include stops at Key West and a private beach club on Bimini , plus a sea day to get to know your fellow passengers. The cost for a single "sailor," as Virgin calls them, starts at around $700.

For senior singles cruises, all the previous options are still reasonable choices. However, some lines cater a bit more to this age group. The caveat is that cruise lines that cater to mature travelers are often targeted at couples, with solo travelers skewing older.

Oceania , Azamara and Holland America are tops on this list, especially on their shorter cruises that attract still-working professionals. The ships are large enough to have a mix of singles among the usual crowd of couples but small enough to provide a strong chance of actually meeting those other singles on board.

These lines offer port-intensive itineraries, so book ship tours to connect with like-minded folks on board since you likely won't spend as much time lounging around the pool.

For singles over 50, a Celebrity Cruises itinerary in the Mediterranean will likely include many other singles with whom you can mingle. Mediterranean cruises are popular with active mid-lifers looking to see more of the world. What could be more romantic than cruising the Greek Isles or the Italian coastline?

Best cruises for singles over 60

cruises over 40 days

Single retirees with the freedom to enjoy longer and often more expensive cruises have loads of options for meeting people. The list starts with premium lines like Holland America, Oceania and Cunard , but also Viking and Princess Cruises .

Single travelers in their 60s and older with a large travel budget should consider luxury cruise lines like Seabourn Cruise Line , Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises . All of these cater to singles with reduced supplement charges and singles meet-and-greets.

Visit the maitre d' on the first day of your cruise to ensure you are seated at the same table or group of tables with other singles for dinner in the main dining room. Dance classes, trivia games and port tours also put you in the right place at the right time to strike up conversations with others looking to make new connections. Social hostesses on luxury lines can introduce you to other solo travelers, too.

Related: Why it's easier to meet new people on a smaller cruise ship

River cruises in Europe are another possibility for singles in this age group. River cruises are inherently social, in part because of the small size of the ships, but also because daily tours put people with shared interests in proximity during walking and bus excursions. There are also choices of specialty theme cruises for LGBTQ+ cruisers , wine lovers, golfers and ancestry seekers, all of which make it easier for singles to meet people on board.

Lines to consider include AmaWaterways , Viking River Cruises, Avalon River Cruises, Emerald Cruises and Uniworld River Cruises. River cruises also sometimes offer reduced single supplements, making them more affordable for those traveling alone.

A top pick for this age group would be an Alaska sailing on Silversea Cruises. This luxury line includes everything in one fare — even many fabulous Alaska excursions you would pay hundreds of dollars for on any other line. The ships are small enough that you can easily meet your fellow travelers, and the excursions make it easy to share experiences with other singles on board.

Bottom line

The romance of a cruise is undeniable. From dressy dinners to the moon's glow on the ocean waves, cruising can feel like a setting straight from a Hollywood film. Though not as simple as swiping right, cruising to meet other singles has appeal.

Choosing the right cruise line and activities can help you narrow your potential candidates. Looking for an outdoor adventurer? Choose active tours in port. Want to share your love of music, wine or Blackjack with someone? Pick a theme cruise focused on your passion.

If you just want to dance the night away with singles in your own age group, there's a ship for you — whether your jam is rock 'n' roll, hip hop or a classic waltz.

Also, you lose nothing by trying. Even if you don't meet the partner of your dreams, you'll enjoy a fantastic cruise vacation.

Cruises for singles over 40 – the best vacation of your life!

cruises over 40 days

For a land-based vacation, you need to think about getting through an airport, arriving in a foreign destination and working out how to transfer to your accommodation. How does the currency work, who can you trust when it comes to taxis etc? Where should you go for food? Where are suitable activities or entertainment?

This is why cruises for singles over 40 can be your best choice…read on to find out why!

This is always the most important part of any holiday. My advice here is to speak to a Travel Agent . They have so much experience and can tell you which is the best cruise line and itinerary for a solo traveller. They can arrange all your transfers for you, ensure you have the correct paperwork and visas, book you the best seat on the plane (if you’re flying to the cruise), find the single cabins on the ships (or tell you which have reduced single supplements), assist you with shore excursions and basically think of all the things that you probably won’t!

Even more importantly, when you’re travelling alone it’s vital to have someone to call should your plans get cancelled or delayed, and a travel agent can help you in this situation.

travel planner

I’ve been dropped off at a hotel I booked myself in Miami (pre cruise), by a taxi driver kindly informing me not to go out alone at nighttime, this isn’t a safe area for a single lady… Well, great, Booking.com didn’t tell me that. I ordered pizza and stayed in the room for the night, what a waste!

The good thing was that I knew I had no safety concerns as soon as I boarded the ship the following day. That’s one of my key selling points to solo travellers. There is a full security team on board (not that you’ll see them apart from at embark/disembark), and security cameras are everywhere. There are also crew members willing to help you out at any time, you’re rarely going to be completely alone.

You can’t be ripped off financially either, because there is no money being exchanged on the ship, everything is done on your key card and you can view your account on your TV screen to keep track.

security camera

Being single shouldn’t stop you from having great adventures! Whilst you could say that some of the ships are adventures in themselves (zip lining anyone?), they also give you the opportunity to see the world. Depending on the itinerary, you can pack quite a few countries into a couple of week’s vacation – you can’t do that on land easily! Check out a Med or Caribbean cruise if you’re into ticking off your bucket list quickly, or if you want to experience lots of outdoor adventures, maybe head to Norway for hiking, fishing, kayaking etc.

kayak in Norway

Personally, I hate dining alone. I can do breakfast, because it’s usually a speedy affair if you want it to be, and lunch can be a take away or quick sandwich or something, but dinners in restaurants alone…no thank you. I’ll choose room service every time.

However, on ships it’s the norm to share tables. This is a great way to firstly, not eat alone, and secondly, meet a whole load of new people! I’ve met so many great friends on cruises, people I’ve ended up hanging out with for the rest of the holiday, which has been great for the company and also to know someone is there for you if you have any issues (and remind you that you should have put your watch back an hour last night…!).

You can also change your allocated table if you don’t like the people you’re with – don’t be afraid to request this, cruising can attract all sorts, you don’t have to love everyone!

If you want to eat solo, you can do that too. Either ask for a single table in the restaurant or head to the buffet or a cafe, or you can order room service.

cruises for singles over 40

Socialising

Most ships have a Singles Get Together event most nights, pre dinner. This is a demonstration of how many singles actually cruise – so don’t be thinking you’ll be the only one! Make the effort to go to these, especially on the first night. People tend to find their buddies within the first couple of nights and not continue to go regularly, so attending the first ones will introduce you to most people.

Often, groups get on really well and will continue to spend the rest of the evening together. It’s also been known for singles to leave the ship single no more…!!

In addition to the singles groups, check out the community notice board for additional get-togethers you may be interested in, such as craft, knitting, Bridge, Friends of Bill W, LGBTQI – almost everyone is catered for.

cruises for singles over 40

Activities and Entertainment

The best thing about cruise ships is that there’s no shortage of activities or entertainment! Depending on the cruise line and ship you choose, you can select from rock climbing, dodgem cars, go karts, ice-skating, bowling, cooking, mini golf, tennis, basketball…the list goes on. The activities team manage these so you never have to feel alone, or unsure what to do, there’s always someone on hand to help you.

When it comes to evening entertainment, grab a drink and find a comfy seat in the theatre or a lounge. Cruisers are generally a friendly bunch, it won’t be long until someone strikes up a conversation with you or asks you to join them – if you want.

ice skating

Cruising can be the perfect time to get around to those fitness goals you keep setting! The gyms are free, but you can pay for a Personal Trainer or fitness class if you really want to go hard. You will find yoga classes, spinning, boxing, Pilates, Zumba, body pump and many more. Head to the gym on the first day and see what classes are on offer for your cruise as you may have to sign up early to get a spot.

Personally, aside from the gym I really love heading out onto the deck and doing laps in the morning to take in the fresh air. It’s a perfect way to start the day, and it won’t take long till you get to know the regulars and are saying hi to several people on your rounds!

gym

Make the most of your time alone to utilize the ship’s Spa and relaxation areas. Many cruise lines offer free access to adult-only areas with hot tubs and pools for you to enjoy (Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class are my faves), and if you want to treat yourself, maybe book in for a massage or facial.

You will also find lots of areas around the ship where you can grab a book and relax on a comfy sofa or hammock. Kick back and enjoy!

cruises for singles over 40

Shore Excursions

Whilst I often recommend that you book your own independent shore excursions to save money and have a more unique experience, as a solo traveller I actually recommend the ship’s tours. This gives you peace of mind in terms of not being stranded if anything goes wrong, not ending up in an area you shouldn’t be, and for the chance to meet more people.

However, you may meet some friends on board who you can book independent tours with as you go forwards, so maybe just book the first few days through the cruise line and see how you go.

Cruises are easy to budget for – on most cruise lines. You can choose from an all-inclusive cruise line, such as Oceania or Regent Seven Seas , or for a mid-range larger ship you will find cruise lines with most food, activities, and entertainment included, such as Royal Caribbean and NCL, so you just need to add on drinks and excursions.

The cruises to be wary of are the budget lines which hit you with everything once you get on board. P&O Australia are notorious for this (not to be confused with P&O UK).

pig

Single Supplements

Talking of budget, you need to consider single supplements. It’s frustrating, but most cruises have them unfortunately. Basically it’s a charge for only having one person in the cabin. There are some ways around this, by choosing a cruise line which has single cabins, such as Royal Caribbean which has Studio rooms and NCL which also has Solo traveller cabins, but they’re still more expensive than sharing a regular room.

As mentioned earlier, save yourself the leg work by asking a Travel Agent to help you with this as they’ll know if any cruise line has a sale on the supplements, which aren’t generally advertised to the general public.

If you’re ok with the supplement and don’t know which type of cabin to choose, you may want to read my last post Oceanview vs Balcony – How to Make the Best Choice.

Best Ships for Singles

Ok, so this is obviously subjective, but as a Forty Something Traveller myself, these are the cruises for singles over 40 that I would choose.

Small ships offer more intimacy, fewer guests, small-group excursions and more of a chance to get to know your fellow cruisers. For this reason, I’d recommend a Viking Ocean cruise, where singles gatherings are hosted every evening by the Entertainment team, all crew members will know your name within a couple of days, and you will truly be made to feel like part of the family from day one. However, do note that depending on where you sit within the over 40 age scale, you may be the youngest guest on board, as their average is a young at heart, active 60-something. You won’t need to pack a tux or dinner suit which may be a win for you too.

Crystal and Azamara are also great options for the boutique cruise line experience who cater for solo travellers. They often do reduced supplements of 25% instead of the usual 100%. Note that Crystal will require formal evening wear, and their age group is also a little higher than Viking.

For a large ship experience, I’d recommend Royal Caribbean for their multitude of activities, single studios, non-stop entertainment, beautiful adult-only solariums and good value. NCL would be a close second for the same reason. These ships have a wider age group too, so you will fit in on any of the ships easily, with younger and older people all around you.

Whilst I don’t have much experience with Holland America, they do have single traveller programs you may want to check out.

cruising for singles over 40

I hope I’ve given you lots of reasons why I think cruises for singles over 40 can be the best vacation of your life! I’m a huge fan of cruising, obviously, and personally think they are the easiest and least stressful way to travel as a solo.

Find the best cruise for you

Featured cruise deals, cruising guide, why take a cruise vacation.

If you have a place on your bucket list, chances are, a cruise will get you there – provided the destination is along a coastline or inland waterway. Cruises cover the world, taking millions of passengers each year to regions such as the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Alaska, Europe, the Mediterranean and even Antarctica. Cruising offers a tremendous value, with trips that include your lodging, meals and entertainment – all rolled into one. Some luxury cruise lines even offer fully inclusive vacations, which cover drinks and tours ashore. And best of all, cruising means seeing the world conveniently after unpacking only once.

Cruises also provide a wonderful option for families, with many ships offering things like waterslides, mini-golf courses and fun clubs for kids, tweens and teens. While most are free, nursery programs can cost extra. Planning is easy: Pick your destination and the right ship (and line) for your travel style. The cruise line makes it simple, offering packages to help you save on extras like alcohol, shore tours or even airfare.

Travelers say they choose to cruise because cruising often costs less per night when compared with land vacations at a hotel, where they'll have to book -- and pay for -- every extra.

What are Tips for Finding Cheap Cruises?

If you're a flexible traveler, you'll have a better chance of finding cheap cruises. Take a cruise that doesn't sail over the summer or holidays, when prices are highest. Book an inside cabin, or take your chances with a "guarantee cabin," ideal for passengers who aren't picky about their stateroom location but really want the lowest price available. Book cabins on lower decks, which often come with lower prices than those rooms on higher floors – that is staterooms over suites.

Cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International offer rates that might drop as low as $75 per person per night -- and sometimes even lower.

If you want a real bargain, consider a transatlantic or repositioning cruise. These cruises are one-way or open-jaw trips, that start in one port and finish at another. You can score a deal sailing from Florida to Europe, for example, or even from New York to Florida. Just be aware, you'll probably have to pay a bit more for airfare to return.

What are Tips to Finding Last-Minute Cruise Deals?

While being flexible date wise will always get you the best last-minute cruise deals, it's particularly helpful if you live near a cruise port and can quickly drive there. That way you'll probably be able to jump on those deals that might pop up just a week or two before the ship is scheduled to sail.

Or if you don't have flexibility with either departure dates or embarkation locations, be willing to compromise on exact destinations. This will allow you to find a wider range of last-minute deals traveling to locations in their off-season or so-called shoulder season.

Do plenty of research and know what your ideal cruise is and costs on average, so both are already on your radar. When you see it drop, pounce! (Many cruise lines update pricing several times per day, so preparation is crucial.)

Best cruises in 2024

There's truly a cruise style and ship for everyone, and that has never been more the case than in 2024, as vessels continue to come in an array of sizes – from riverboats and expedition vessels to the largest-ever mega ships. And it's not an exaggeration to say some are loaded with so many activities that you couldn't possibly enjoy them all in a single sailing.

Families will find plenty of options and activities onboard big ships, which have transformed cruising, making the vessels as exciting as the destinations themselves. The Caribbean is always a great option for families, offering lots of sunshine, great beaches and culture. Alaska, famous for its incredible vistas and abundant wildlife, is also a solid family cruise option. Consider cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and even Celebrity Cruises and Holland America Line for a great multi-generational voyage.

Or on the smaller side, by comparison, river cruising remains a hot ticket item this year, with exciting routes that send eager guests down the Danube or Rhine rivers in Europe or to lesser-frequented locations, like the Mekong River in Cambodia or Vietnam, or soon the Magdalena River in Colombia. Popular river cruises embark in timeless cities like Amsterdam, Budapest and Lisbon. River cruise lines to consider encompass Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, Emerald Cruises, Tauck, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Riverside Luxury Cruises, as well as American Cruise Lines for a domestic alternative.

If you're an adventurer at heart, an expedition cruise might be best for you. These voyages, often onboard small ships (only a few hundred passengers tops), offer an intimate experience that brings passengers right up next to glaciers, whales, penguins and iguanas. Ships visit tiny spots all over the world – from pole to pole – including the Arctic, Alaska, Australia, Greenland, the Galapagos and, of course, Antarctica. Passengers will spend their time zodiacing, kayaking, hiking, biking and exploring with expert guides and knowledgeable naturalists. Expedition travelers love cruise lines such as Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, UnCruise Adventures, Silversea, HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions), Ponant and Quark Expeditions, as well as an ever-expanding list that now even extends to Seabourn and Viking.

But for the most decadent form of travel, luxury cruises offer all-inclusive experiences onboard small to median-sized ships (usually under a thousand passengers) with perks like butlers, high-end amenities and personalized, intuitive service, not to mention the finest dining at sea. Ships often feature luxury touches like marble and crystal decor, intimate spaces and beautiful spas. Because luxury ships tend to be on the smaller size, they can often reach off-the-beaten-path destinations bigger ships simply cannot access -- ports like St. Tropez or Guadeloupe. If you're looking for a luxury cruise, consider Crystal, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea, Explora Journeys, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and upcoming Four Seasons Yachts.

What Are the Longest Cruises You Can Take?

By Sally Macmillan

Last updated: November 6th, 2023

Longest Cruises - Celebrity Edge

  • Find a Cruise

Our longest cruises—those with itineraries of 15 nights and more—offer a wonderful opportunity to experience a variety of destinations in one memorable vacation. Also known as repositioning, transpacific or transatlantic cruises, depending on where they are sailing, ships on these voyages cruise “one way”, from point to point, rather than starting and finishing at the same port.

You might board your ship in one continent and disembark in another, cross the world’s biggest oceans, and tick off an enviable wish list of different countries along the way. Leisurely days at sea allow plenty of time to make the most of your ship’s restaurants, spas, sporting facilities, and enrichment classes—or relax and do absolutely nothing.

Here’s a selection of our six longest cruises and where they can take you.

1: 52-Night Grand Journey on Celebrity Edge

Celebrity Edge’s epic Grand Journey calls at more than 20 ports in 11 countries, spanning three continents over 52 nights—the ship’s longest cruise trip.

Ancient Greek theater of Taormina

Greek Theater of Taormina in Sicily, Italy

Sailing from Rome to New Zealand, this cruise is packed with opportunities to explore myriad cultures, historic sites, and world-famous natural attractions, with a range of exciting shore excursions at every port.

Catania , a picturesque city on Sicily’s east coast, dates to ancient Greek and Roman times. One of the island’s finest ancient sites is the Greek Theater of Taormina. Built on Mount Tauro in the third century BC, it was designed to make the most of its stunning natural surroundings, with sweeping ocean views and a backdrop of Mount Etna. The theater’s auditorium seated thousands of spectators and is still used today for concerts, operas, and ballets.

Ancient site of Petra

Petra, Jordan

Celebrity Edge will head south from Sicily to the north coast of Africa, transiting the Suez Canal to the Red Sea. From Aqaba in Jordan, there’s a chance to visit the exquisite city of Petra, carved out of pink sandstone and accessed via a skinny canyon, deep in the mountains. Petra, built by the Nabateans, is believed to be 2,500 years old and is one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.

The ship then sails east across the Indian Ocean. Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay, by way of contrast to many of the ancient sites on this itinerary, is a contemporary classic.

Its three massive sculptural conservatories showcase extraordinary displays of horticulture and garden artistry. The Flower Dome houses exotic plants and flowers from around the world, while the Flower Fantasy is more like a surreal art gallery than a garden.

Couple snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef, so big it’s the only living organism visible from space. From the coastal city of Cairns, you’ll have the chance to get up close to some of its spectacular underwater wonders on a thrilling day trip. Swim, snorkel or dive in colorful coral gardens among tropical fish and sea creatures—or gaze at the vivid world below from a glass-bottomed boat.

The Sydney Opera House is another must-see Australian treasure. Its distinctive design was inspired by its sublime setting on the harbor and it is the country’s foremost cultural institution. If time permits, book a show when you’re in town—world-class performances include opera, cabaret, classical concerts, comedy, and theater.

Milford Sound reflecting on waters

Milford Sound, New Zealand

On leaving Australia, Celebrity Edge’s longest cruise heads to New Zealand . One of the many highlights is Milford Sound on the country’s South Island. Known as the jewel of Fiordland National Park, Milford Sound is best experienced from the decks of a ship. You’ll spend several hours sailing quietly past sheer cliffs and dense rainforest, among awe-inspiring scenery that’s almost reminiscent of Alaska.

2: 18-Night Hawaii, Tahiti, & Bora Bora Cruise

Unique architecture of Pearl Harbor National Memorial

Pearl Harbor National Memorial in Honolulu, Hawaii

Board your ship in Honolulu for a memorable voyage across the Pacific Ocean to Sydney in the land Down Under on our second-longest cruise itinerary. If you can spare a few hours before embarking, a visit to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial is a rewarding, if sobering experience.

After five sea days, you’ll dock in Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia on the idyllic island of Tahiti . Around the port, you can shop for souvenirs at the open-air market and inspect (or buy) black pearls at the Robert Wan Pearl Museum. But you’ll most likely want to head out of town for the day.

Lush landscape of Vaipahi Water Gardens

Vaipahi Water Gardens in Tahiti, French Polynesia

There are ample opportunities to snorkel and swim in unbelievably clear tropical lagoons or explore the island’s lush interior. One driving tour of the breathtaking West Coast takes in Polynesian sacred sites, Tahiti’s biggest underwater cave, and a walk through the magical Vaipahi Water Gardens.

Bora Bora, one of the best longest cruises to take

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Bloody Mary’s restaurant is something of an institution on Bora Bora—check out the roll call of famous visitors over lunch when you join a full-day tour of this small but impossibly beautiful island. Highlights include a 4WD safari into the jungle, where you’ll see evidence of the GIs’ presence in World War II; snorkeling in colorful coral gardens; and swimming among rays.

One of the best things about cruising into Auckland on New Zealand’s North Island is that your ship docks right in the center of town. Many major attractions are within walking distance of the wharf, including the instantly recognizable Sky Tower. Take a trip to the top for panoramic views and, if you’re exceptionally brave, sign up for the 630-foot Sky Jump.

Majestic view of Haruru Falls

Haruru Falls in Bay of Islands, New Zealand

The Bay of Islands is not only a haven for wildlife lovers and adventure-seekers; it played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s history. A wonderful way to learn about Maori culture is by joining members of the Ngapuhi tribe on a river trip aboard a traditional war canoe. As you paddle the Waitangi River from the spectacular Haruru Falls, storytellers regale you with tribal tales and local legends.

This epic voyage ends in Sydney . You’ll want to be up early to enjoy the arrival in Sydney Harbour, surely one of the world’s most beautiful approaches to port. And without doubt, you should extend your stay to explore this dynamic city.

3: 15-Night Panama Canal Cruise

Celebrity cruising the Bridge of the Americas

Bridge of the Americas, Panama

Bookended by either San Diego or Los Angeles, California and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a Panama Canal cruise is one of the most popular of our longest cruises. In between visiting five or six ports (depending on whether you’re on an eastbound or westbound cruise) and experiencing the engineering marvel that is the Panama Canal, you’ll enjoy seven leisurely days at sea.

Rock formations of El Arco de Cabo San Lucas

El Arco in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Cabo San Lucas , on the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, is known both for its glamorous resort scene and abundant natural attractions. Blessed with almost year-round sunshine, it’s the perfect place for watersports, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Don’t miss El Arco (“The Arch”), a dramatic rock arch at Land’s End where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean.

Los Arcos (“The Arches”) in Puerto Vallerta’s Banderas Bay is another instantly recognizable landmark that Mexico is known for , a series of granite rock arches, caves, and tunnels, around which the snorkeling is superb. The bay’s 60-plus miles of coastline takes in Los Arcos Marine Park plus an intoxicating mix of beaches, old Spanish colonial districts, and the busy El Malecon boardwalk.

Bridge in the middle of Monteverde Cloud Forest

Cloud Forest Reserve in Monteverde, Costa Rica

Costa Rica is renowned for its exotic wildlife and eco-adventures—and rare cloud forests. A trek in Monteverde’s mist-shrouded Cloud Forest Reserve reveals an incredible diversity of lush rainforest, rare tropical plants, dramatic waterfalls, and brightly colored birds and butterflies. The cooler climate makes a refreshing change—just remember to pack a lightweight rain jacket.

Gatun locks of Panama Canal

Panama Canal

Visiting the Panama Canal is the centerpiece of this cruise. Connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the 50-mile, man-made canal opened in 1914 and revolutionized sea journeys by cutting hundreds of miles from the original routes, which took ships all the way around South America. The vast freshwater Gatun Lake, 85 feet above sea level, forms a major part of the canal.

Beautiful skyline of Cartagena

Cartagena, Colombia

Your ship will dock at Colon —a great spot for duty-free shopping—for a day, before heading to Cartagena on Colombia’s north coast. This beautifully preserved walled city dates back to the 16th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The best way to explore its many cultural and architectural treasures is on foot, with a guide to fill you in on its fascinating history.

4: 15-Night Azores & Spain Transatlantic Cruise

Transatlantic cruises are among our longest cruises. This Spanish-flavored sailing departs from Tampa, Florida and sails to Barcelona, Spain over 15 nights, calling at five unforgettable destinations.

Azores, one of the longest cruises to take

Lagoa do Fogo, Azores

Your ship spends seven days at sea before docking at Ponta Delgada in the Portuguese Azores, with plenty of time to enjoy the rhythm of life onboard. Once you’re in port, get your land legs back on one of São Miguel Island’s best hiking trails, to Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake) in the mountains.

Read: Insider’s Guide to Ponta Delgada

Two sea days later, you arrive at Cadiz, the jumping-off point for the enchanting southern Spanish city of Seville . Exploring on foot is the most rewarding way to soak up the atmosphere of the historic center. Not only will you see Seville’s most significant landmarks, you can also wander down any number of medieval alleyways and find a tapas bar where you can sample traditional Andalusian cuisine with a chilled glass of sherry.

Andalusian architecture of Royal Alcazar, Spain

Royal Alcazar in Seville, Spain

Once you’ve visited Seville’s impressive Alcázar, the Moorish royal palace that’s still in use today, Granada’s Alhambra Palace will be top of your must-visit list. Allow a full day from Malaga to see the romantic citadel, a complex of ornate palaces, gardens, and an ancient fortress. The Alhambra has been described as “the last sigh of the Moors” and has inspired poets, artists and followers of many faiths since the 13th century.

Following a day in Valencia , where avant-garde modern architecture mingles with the charming historic center, you’ll disembark in Barcelona. If you only have time to take in one of this vibrant Catalan city’s many attractions, make sure it is La Sagrada Familia, designed by the visionary architect Antoni Gaudí.

Historic Sagrada Familia reflecting on water

La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain

Construction of the Catholic basilica began in 1882 and it is still a work in progress. The style of architecture is described as a mix of Art Nouveau, Spanish Late Gothic, and Catalan Modernism, and there is nothing in the world comparable to the flowing organic forms and impossibly spindly spires.

5: 15-Night Mediterranean Passage Transatlantic Cruise

This eastbound transatlantic cruise sets sail from Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, and finishes 15 nights later in Tampa, Florida . The itinerary includes calls in France, Spain, the Azores, and Nassau, interspersed by nine sea days.

The first stop is Toulon, a port established in Roman times. Toulon is the gateway to sought-after destinations such as Aix-en-Provence and Cassis and is a fascinating city in its own right.

Picturesque view of Marseille

Marseille, France

However, it’s well worth taking the short trip to Marseille to visit the new MuCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations). Even if you only take in one exhibition, the museum’s ancient waterfront setting and bold contemporary architecture are absolutely awe-inspiring.

Palma de Mallorca’s imposing La Seu Cathedral also blends old and modern architecture, but in a completely different way. It is the grandest of dozens of historic sites you’ll discover in the Spanish island’s buzzing capital. Book a tour of the roof terraces for panoramic city and sea views.

Chef cooking paella

Cartagena, Spain

Cartagena has a long and many-layered maritime history. It is dotted with Roman ruins, including the impressive 2,000-year-old theater, which was only discovered in 1988. If you’re more into culinary history, you can book a fabulous hands-on foodie tour.

A Celebrity Cruises chef escorts you to Cartagena’s Market Hall, and on to a local restaurant to learn how to cook traditional Spanish dishes. The journey continues on board the ship, where you’ll enjoy an intimate dinner based on the day’s experiences.

Scenic view of resort hotel Paradise Island Atlantis Resort

Atlantis Resort in Nassau, Bahamas

Having crossed the Atlantic, your last port of call before disembarking in Tampa is Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. Cool off at Atlantis Paradise Island Resort, where you can play with sea lions, meet dolphins, relax on beautiful Caribbean beaches or spend the day at the action-packed Aquaventure water park.

6: 15-Night Bering Sea & Japan Transpacific Cruise

Scenic pathway in Stanley Park in autumn

Stanley Park in Vancouver, British Columbia

Vancouver is a marvelous place to embark on one of our longest cruises, a 15-night transpacific adventure that takes in Alaska and Japan, ending in Yokohama, the port for Tokyo.

If you have time, spend a day or two in Vancouver before you embark. There’s lots to see and do, from the old Gastown and Chinatown districts to First Nation art galleries, craft breweries, and boundless outdoor activities.

Stanley Park, one of the city’s best-loved attractions, is about 20 minutes’ walk from Canada Place Cruise Terminal. Book a bike tour that takes you along the Seawall, across forest trails and to see the totem poles at Brockton Point.

Bear spotted at the Tongass National Forest

Tongass National Forest, Alaska

First Nations and Russian cultures merge in the intriguing Alaskan town of Sitka , set within the magnificent Tongass National Forest. This is the place to see eagles, bears, whales, and sea otters in the wild, kayak across pristine waterways, or join a professional sportfishing charter. Alaska certainly earns its “Last Frontier” moniker.

Your ship crosses the international dateline during eight sea days before you arrive in Japan . Sapporo, the biggest city on Hokkaido Island, is about two hours’ drive from Muroran port. A full-day tour gives an excellent overview of Sapporo’s historic and modern landmarks, including the lovely Odori Park which runs through the heart of the city.

Hakodate, Japan, one of the longest cruises to take

Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse in Hakodate, Japan

Another important city on Hokkaido is Hakodate and the best place to learn about its international trading history is at the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse. The restored waterfront buildings house shops, galleries, bars, and restaurants. Make sure you sample shio ramen , a salty broth served with pork belly, hard-boiled eggs, scallions, and wakame seaweed. It’s Hakodate’s signature dish.

People strolling around Senso-ji Temple

Sensoji Temple in Tokyo, Japan

Vast, sprawling Tokyo is a mind-boggling mix of futuristic neon-lit buildings, tranquil gardens, high-end shopping, ancient shrines, and eateries ranging from street stalls to Michelin-starred restaurants.

Your must-visit list will overflow with possibilities, but Sensoji Temple should be at the top. It’s Tokyo’s oldest temple, a magnet for devout Buddhists and culturally curious visitors, and also a thriving marketplace—like Tokyo itself, a feast for the senses.

10 Around-the-world Cruises for the Trip of a Lifetime

These world cruises offer the ultimate itineraries.

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

cruises over 40 days

Want to island hop around French Polynesia, visit Africa's incredible cities, and cruise through Asia without ever switching hotels or repacking your bags? An around-the-world cruise provides the ultimate itinerary, packed with exciting international destinations (some even visit hard-to-reach destinations like Easter Island and Antarctica), and luxury cruise lines provide comfortable accommodations, specialty restaurants, and plenty to do on and off the ship.

There are two main things you need before booking a world cruise: plenty of time and some spare cash. Prices range from around $20,000 to upwards of $100,000 per person, and all our top picks are more than 100 days (one is even a whopping 275 days), so they're ideal for retired travelers looking for their next big adventure. Pack wisely for a range of destinations and climates, and get ready for the journey of a lifetime, filled with postcard-perfect destinations and new friends (because you're bound to meet a travel buddy or two after 100-plus days on a ship). If an around-the-world cruise is at the top of your travel list, you'll want to book sooner rather than later — these journeys frequently sell out because many cruise lines only offer a limited number of sailings.

Here are ten of the best around-the-world cruises you can take in 2023 and 2024.

Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking world cruise.

See 28 countries on the 138-day Viking World Cruise from Fort Lauderdale to London. After departing from Florida, the Viking Sky will sail the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, stopping in sunny destinations before crossing the Panama Canal to reach the Pacific. From there, the ship will visit destinations in Mexico and the continental United States, continuing on to Hawaii, French Polynesia, New Zealand, and Australia. Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, and India are among the ports in Asia, then it's on to the Middle East before traveling to Europe, where final destinations include Italy, Spain, and Portugal en route to London. Fares start at $59,995.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Moments in time: world cruise 2024.

Sail around the world in 132 nights aboard the Seven Seas Mariner on a round-trip journey from Miami. You'll spend the days at sea enjoying the luxury ship's amenities, including the spa and several restaurants and lounges, between stops in destinations like Costa Rica, Mexico, Hawaii, Tahiti, Bora Bora, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, India, UAE, Israel, and Italy, among others. This 2024 world cruise , with fares starting at $73,499, is officially sold out , but you can join a waitlist to be notified of cancellations.

Royal Caribbean

The ultimate world cruise.

Royal Caribbean pulls out all the stops — and there are more than 150 of them — on this 274-night cruise to all seven continents. The itinerary aboard the Serenade of the Seas begins in Miami on December 10, 2023, and visits more than 60 countries, including Brazil, Ecuador, Nicaragua, French Polynesia, the Philippines, South Korea, India, Romania, and Greenland, before ending in Miami on September 10, 2024. Travelers who don't want to commit to the entire cruise can book shorter segments. Fares start at $59,999 for this cruise that gives travelers the opportunity to visit 11 of the great wonders of the world, including the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China, and Chichen Itza.

World Cruise 2024

Enjoy 133 days on Silversea's Silver Shadow with this round-trip sailing from San Francisco. During that time, the ship will visit 65 ports in 14 countries, including Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, China, Japan, and Canada. Fares start at $66,000 for this 2024 sailing, which currently has waitlist availability.

2024 World Cruise: Extraordinary Horizons

Climb aboard the Seabourn Sojourn for a 145-day world cruise from Los Angeles to Athens, visiting 72 ports in 28 countries. The cruise departs Los Angeles and goes to Hawaii, French Polynesia, New Zealand, Australia, Vietnam, Japan, and China — just to name a few places — before ending in Greece. Visit the website for booking details and shorter segments.

Oceania Cruises

Around the world in 180 days.

Travelers on Oceania's 180-day round-trip cruise from Los Angeles to New York aboard the Insignia will see some of the world's most impressive sights. Highlights include stops in stunning French Polynesia, Indonesia, Thailand, Egypt, Spain, France, and Iceland. Fares start at $48,499 for the 2024 sailing .

MSC Cruises

Msc world cruise 2024.

The MSC Poesia will take guests to 56 destinations on this 120-day cruise starting in Rome. Countries visited during this journey include Argentina, Chile, Peru, New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India, and Jordan. When you're not exploring each port, you can relax in the swimming pools and hot tubs, visit the many restaurants, bars, and lounges, or go to the spa. Fares start at $17,199 per person; find booking details on the MSC website.

Princess Cruises

111-day world cruise.

This round-trip cruise from Los Angeles on the Island Princess will visit 47 ports in beautiful places like New Zealand, Australia, Bali, Sri Lanka, UAE, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Bermuda, Mexico, and more. Fares for this 2024 sailing start at $19,497.

Holland America Line

128-day grand world voyage.

Explore the world on this 128-day round-trip journey from Fort Lauderdale on the Zuiderdam . This cruise's itinerary includes a trip down the Amazon River, stops in the Caribbean, a Panama Canal crossing, and stops in cities like Honolulu, Tokyo, Shanghai, Singapore, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, and more. Fares start at $23,599 for this 2024 cruise .

Azamara World Cruise

This 155-night itinerary to more than 40 countries kicks off in Fort Lauderdale and finishes in Barcelona. The itinerary features ports for experiencing some of the great wonders of the world, including the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, as well as Petra in Jordan and the Colosseum in Rome. Travelers can also choose to join segments of the cruise aboard the Azamara Onward for as few as 10 nights. Fares for this 2024 sailing start at $36,379.

I've Been on Over 25 Cruises, Here is How I Cruise on a Budget

L ooking to go on a cruise without spending too much money? The good news is that cruising on a budget is very doable. I’m sharing my cruise tips to help you get the best cruise deals and save money while cruising. These practical tips are perfect for those of you who want to make the most of your cruise experience without spending too much money.

How to Cruise on a Budget

1. book the cheapest room on an old ship.

A simple yet effective way to save money on a cruise is to book the cheapest room on the oldest ship. Typically, the inside cabin is the most affordable option, and the oldest ships are the cheapest.

Cruise lines charge a premium for the newest ships, even for the same itinerary. By choosing the oldest ship’s cheapest room, I am able to take more cruises throughout the year. I personally prefer cruising on older ships, and you can read about why I enjoy cruising on older ships in my article.

2. Look for Last Minute Deals on Repositioning Cruises

If you’re looking to go on a cruise on a budget, booking last minute deals is the way to go. Last minute deals on repositioning cruises usually offer the best cruise deals.

Repositioning cruises is when a ship moves from one region to another, such as moving from Europe and ending up in Florida. These cruises typically have plenty of sea days and are often longer than usual. They take place during the shoulder off-peak season, but if you keep an eye out, you can find some incredible last-minute deals.

You can even get deals for as low as $50 per person per night on these repositioning cruises. For more information on how to get the best last-minute deals , check out my article.

3. Go During Off Peak

Another way to save money is by cruising during the off-season. During the summer and Holidays, cruising is at its peak, which means that prices are higher.

However, if you choose to go during the fall and winter months, such as September, you may be able to find some great deals on cruise fares.

Or if you’re willing to take the risk of traveling during hurricane season, you can get some cheap deals on Caribbean cruises. If you cruise during hurricane season, check out my anti-seasickness advice .

Another benefit of going on a cruise during the off-season is that the ship and ports will be less crowded.

4. Keep an Eye Out for Sales and Promotions

I never book a cruise at full price, and I always search for deals on cruises. Cruise lines are always having sales and promotions such as free gratuity, free Wi-Fi, free beverage packages, free 3rd and 4th person, or even kids sail free.

Their biggest sales are during the Wave season, which is from January to March, as well as on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Over the years, I have saved a lot of money by looking for deals. If you want to know more, check out my article on when is the best time to book a cruise to get the best deal.

5. Check for Cheaper Shore Excursions

Cruise shore excursions are expensive. To save money, you need to shop around for cheaper shore excursions.

You can do this by booking directly with independent tour operators such as Viator to save money on shore excursions. The cruise line shore excursion is usually more expensive because they charge a premium for the guarantee that the ship won’t leave without you.

However, in my experience, independent operators often offer the same tour at a lower price, and since they do the same tour with cruise passengers every week, getting left behind is never an issue.

I always compare the prices of the cruise shore excursions with those offered by  Viator . I have saved a lot of money by booking cheaper shore excursions.

6. Depart from a Port You Can Drive To

Choosing a port that is close to your home is a great way to save money on your cruise. You can save a lot by not having to pay for airfare. Your transportation costs will be greatly reduced to just car parking fees or perhaps just the price of an Uber or taxi.

For example, I live near New York so when I go on a Caribbean cruise, I always depart from one of the New York cruise ports instead of flying to Florida.

7. Bring Your Own Wine

Every penny counts if you are on a budget. One great way to save money on a cruise is by bringing your own wine. This is a money-saving cruise hack that many cruisers are not aware of.

For example, Royal Caribbean permits each guest to bring one sealed 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne, while Disney Cruise Line allows two unopened bottles of wine or champagne. You can only bring wine on embarkation day and not from the port. Check with your cruise line to see what’s allowed.

It’s worth noting that if you bring your bottle of wine to the main dining room, you will have to pay corkage. To avoid this, I suggest getting wine glasses from the bar and borrowing a corkscrew from your cabin steward.

You can enjoy your wine in your stateroom. I always pour myself a glass of wine and take it with me to the lobby so I can enjoy it with live music.

8. Get Free Champagne

Alcoholic beverages can be quite expensive on a cruise. However, there are ways to save money on drinks while on a cruise.

Many first-time cruisers don’t realize that they can get free drinks on a cruise. It’s actually quite easy to get free champagne. All you have to do is attend cruise art auctions, where they typically serve free champagne to guests. The best part is that there is no obligation to buy anything from the art auction.

In addition to art auctions, there are other ways to get complimentary drinks. Simply check the daily planner to see if there are any gift shop events offering free liquor samples to attract customers to their store. Keep in mind that you’re more likely to find free champagne and free tasting events on sea days rather than port days.

For more tips on how to get free champagne and drinks on a cruise, be sure to check out my article on 10 ways to get free champagne and drinks .

9. Bring Essentials from Home

Buying toiletries and other essentials is expensive on a cruise. To avoid paying exorbitant cruise ship prices, I always make sure to pack toiletries and OTC medicines, so I don’t have to buy them on the ship. I have a toiletry bag packing list that I print to help with my packing, check it out .

Also, bringing a refillable water bottle to the cruise is another smart way to save money. You can easily refill it at the buffet, and it comes in handy to have it with you on shore excursions and in your stateroom.

By using a refillable water bottle, you avoid buying expensive bottled water on the ship and save yourself the hassle of repeatedly going back to the buffet for water.

In my opinion, an insulated water bottle without a straw is a great choice because you don’t have to deal with washing straws in your cabin.

10. Use the Cruise Ship Laundromat

If you’re going on a long cruise or traveling with kids, it’s likely that you will end up having to do some laundry. One way to save money while on your cruise is to use the coin-operated laundromat on the ship instead of the laundry service, which can be quite expensive.

Before I go on a cruise, I always check to see if the cruise ship I’m going on has a laundromat. It is usually cheap and some cruise lines like Princess Cruise will even let you wash your clothes for free (you just need to pay for detergent).

If the ship you’re on doesn’t have a laundromat, you can still do some light washing in your cabin. I always bring these travel laundry packets just in case.

11. Take Advantage of Shareholder Benefits

Another way I save money on cruising is to take advantage of shareholder benefits. Many cruise lines offer onboard credit to shareholders, which can range from $50 to $1000.

The amount of credit you receive depends on the duration of your cruise. You will also need to own a minimum number of shares to get the shareholder benefit.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to get free money from cruise lines. Check out my article on how to take advantage of cruise shareholder benefit .

8 reasons cruises may be a better value for a 7-day vacation than land-based hotel stays

Cruising for a vacation getaway this summer or fall consider these insights.

Virtuoso Vice President of Global Public Relations Misty Belles discusses 2024 summer travel trends, the demographic shift to the cruise industry and Global Travel Adviser Day.

Cooler-climate countries see spike in demand for summer travel

Virtuoso Vice President of Global Public Relations Misty Belles discusses 2024 summer travel trends, the demographic shift to the cruise industry and Global Travel Adviser Day.

Millions of Americans are getting ready to travel this summer , with recent research from the MMGY Travel Intelligence's Portrait of American Travelers study revealing that 76% of Americans plan to take a trip this year.

With this travel surge, savvy consumers are always striving to reap value from vacation dollars.

But does a cruise offer more vacation value than a land-based hotel stay?

CRUISE LINE OFFERS RETIREES CONCERNED ABOUT INFLATION ‘A NEW WAY OF LIFE'

FOX Business consulted with four different travel professionals to find out how and if consumers can stretch their vacation dollars on a cruise vs. a hotel stay.

Here's a deep dive into the issue — with eight intriguing reasons why cruises may win out in the end.

1. Cruise amenities are usually plentiful

Cruise loyalists sail over and over again because of the "unpack once" concept — and the value a cruise can present.

Not only can you visit several ports during one sailing, there are ample food options , activities and entertainment that your cruise fare covers.

Also, there are often booking incentives with onboard credits, free drink packages , free Wi-Fi and military discounts on some cruise lines. For consumers who are driven by price, it’s worthwhile to research cruise options this summer.

"When we look at pricing for mid-summer travel season in the Caribbean — a seven-night cruise in July, for example — we're seeing an average starting fare of $1,160 per person, or $165 per night, per person," said Colleen McDaniel, spokesperson with Cruise Critic, who is based in Denver.

"It's an extremely competitive price compared with similar options on land."

"And when you take into account the amenities included in that fare — food, entertainment and your room — it's an extremely competitive price compared with similar options on land."

When you're considering apples-to-apples in terms of quality, you'd be hard-pressed to find a comparable hotel option for less, according to McDaniel.

"At sea, you're experiencing not simply a room and a pool, but you've got an array of bars and restaurants , Broadway-caliber entertainment, waterparks and more," she said.

2. A cruise's value can be stretched

Experts say travelers can make a cruise an even greater value than a land-based hotel stay.

"One perk of cruising is that it allows many American travelers to, in effect, 'drive' to their cruise destination — whether that's the Caribbean , Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada/New England or Mexico, as homeports can be found along the East and West Coasts, and along with the Gulf Coast. So for many, it means there is an option to drive rather than fly," said McDaniel.

Without the need to book a flight or numerous flights in some cases, you can save thousands of dollars if you were flying across the U.S. or to an island in the Carribean.

Also in the win column for cruises: There’s the reduction of travel hassles.

"One could also argue that avoiding the airport — crowds, delays, cancellations, added fees — has even more value in the form of mental wellness," McDaniel said.

3. There is more choice in lodging picks

Unlike hotels, part of the cruise booking process also includes booking your exact cabin — and the room choices can be extensive.

10 LOCATIONS AROUND THE WORLD THAT OFFER BREATHTAKING SUNSETS

"So, rather than choose between a handful of room types at a hotel, most of which come at relatively the same price, you're able to select the cabin that best fits both your needs and your budget," said McDaniel.

4. Cruise lines cater to travelers just as hotels do

Cruise lines cater to varying travelers.

"Yes, there is definitely a tiered model of cruise pricing across the industry that's very similar to the hotel brands and industry," McDaniel said.

"There are mainstream lines that are more budget-friendly, and other mainstream lines that are a bit more elevated in experience and price."

5. A cruise's tab is more predictable

When booking a cruise, you’ll generally face fewer separate costs, said Sally French, travel expert at NerdWallet in San Francisco.

"Cruise fare tends to include meals, entertainment and lodging all in one," she said.

CRUISES ARE SAILING ‘VERY HEALTHY’ CONSUMER WATERS: HARRY SOMMERS

However, she noted, "cruisers may see extra costs — particularly if they book add-ons like shore excursions, have a meal at one of the ship’s fancier restaurants, or take part in cruise offerings that necessitate an additional fees like a spa treatment."

"Cruise fare tends to include meals, entertainment and lodging all in one."

Booking a hotel room, by contrast, typically means you’re still on the hook for filling your day and your belly, French said.

"While it’s not uncommon to find hotels that offer free breakfast and activities, travelers should typically budget for ongoing costs throughout the trip, such as dining out, entertainment and transportation between those spots," she said.

6. Cruises can be all-inclusive

It’s an interesting comparison when booking upscale travel .

"Luxury cruise lines tend to be more truly all-inclusive," French said.

In contrast, budget cruise lines tend to charge more for extras.

For example, many affordable cruise lines only serve water, tea and coffee for free, but charge extra for soda, juice and alcohol.

That said, "it’s rare to find a luxury hotel brand that offers free breakfast, except in unique circumstances such as [consumers'] elite status," said French.

And, she said that hotels most likely to serve free breakfast tend to be the low-to-mid tier brands associated with major hotel chains.

"Travelers [have] an opportunity to relax and focus on the experience and their time together rather than [the] additional costs they’ll need to consider."

Kim Guimaraes, vice president of national accounts with Crystal and Abercrombie & Kent, who is based in Miami, told FOX Business that in most cases, travelers who choose to vacation at a traditional five-star hotel can expect to pay additional costs for any on-site activities selected, in addition to food and beverage.

"On upscale cruises, not only are guests receiving white-glove service around the clock, but they are also getting premium dining experiences, top-shelf spirits and wines , award-winning entertainment and innovative guest programming included in their cost," said Guimaraes.

"This provides travelers an opportunity to relax and focus on the experience and their time together rather than what additional costs they’ll need to consider."

7. Vacation transportation costs can be lower

A cruise takes travelers to multiple destinations, in many cases.

"If you were to price out traveling to those ports, with train or air and hotel separately, it would add up to the same or more than using a cruise as your mode of transportation," said Kelly Connor, travel adviser with AAA Club Alliance in Marlton, New Jersey.

"Figure in travel time and airport arrival and wait times — and a cruise is valuable in handling the travel for you, plus offering a fabulous sea view."

For instance, a Mediterranean cruise stopping in Capri, Mykonos and Istanbul and ending in Athens, said Connor, is much more affordable than trying to hop around to those places in a week on your own.

"Plus, you have your choice of a wide variety of onboard experiences and entertainment at night and on cruising days — right there in walkable distance," Connor added.

"The convenience is amazing and you don’t have to take a taxi to get back to your room."

8. Cruising can be more streamlined

Don’t overlook the value of trip planning, said French with NerdWallet.

"With a cruise, there’s very little thinking involved once you’re onboard, and generally, you can eat when you want and partake in any of the available activities at your leisure," she said.

With a hotel stay, visitors are generally on their own in terms of planning their days.

Plus, if your land-based vacation involves nights in multiple cities, you’ll have to deal with checking in and out of multiple hotels and handling your luggage accordingly.
