The Top 12 Things to Do in Dahab, Egypt

The Red Sea coast offers a view of Egypt  that's totally different from its ancient pyramids or the frenetic streets of Cairo . Located 60 miles / 95 kilometers north of the famous resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab was once a sleepy Bedouin fishing village. Today, it’s a laid-back, bohemian beach town popular with backpackers and renowned as one of the best dive destinations in Africa . Although scuba diving is undoubtedly Dahab’s premier claim to fame, there are plenty of other activities on offer in and around this Sinai Peninsula jewel. Many of them are inspired by the proximity of the Sinai Desert.

Learn to Scuba Dive

If you haven’t yet discovered the wonders of the underwater world, Dahab is a great place to do so. There are more than 40 dive centers to choose from, and the warm, clear conditions are perfectly suited to beginners. Those on a budget will also appreciate that Egypt’s Red Sea coast is one of the cheapest places in the world to get scuba certified . Entry level Open Water courses take three to four days to complete, after which you’re free to sign up for fun dives to prime Dahab dive sites like the Bells, the Canyon and offshore reef Gabr el Bint.

Dive the Blue Hole

A submarine sinkhole that plunges to depths of over 330 feet / 100 meters, Dahab’s Blue Hole is not the region’s prettiest dive site; but it is certainly its most well known. It’s especially popular with tec divers and advanced freedivers, as its astonishing depths provide an opportunity to test their skills to the limit. The Arch (a 26-meter-long tunnel that leads from the Blue Hole to the open ocean) is considered the ultimate freediving challenge. Many divers have lost their lives at this infamous site, which is known locally as the Diver’s Cemetery . Recreational divers should stick to the shallows.

Discover the SS Thistlegorm

Most Dahab dive centers offer day trips to the SS Thistlegorm , one of the world’s most iconic shipwrecks. Drafted into military service during World War II, the British freighter sank in 1941 after being hit by two German bombers. She was loaded with Allied supplies at the time, including cases of ammunition, armored vehicles, military motorcycles, guns, and aircraft parts. The SS Thistlegorm was rediscovered by Jacques Cousteau in 1955 and is now the jewel of the Red Sea diving scene. Measuring over 400 feet/ 120 meters in length, she lies in relatively shallow water with her wartime cargo still clearly visible.

Go Kitesurfing or Windsurfing

With an average of 300 windy days per year, Dahab is also a haven for kitesurfers and windsurfers. Two sheltered lagoons offer safe stretches of flat water ideal for those learning either sport for the first time, while top spots like Baby Bay provide the perfect conditions for freestyle surfers. Beyond Napoleon Reef, the open ocean creates swells of up to three meters for advanced riders looking for more of a challenge. During the peak summer months, the wind blows almost constantly and the water is balmy.  Several shops in Dahab offer kite and windsurfing courses in addition to equipment rental.

Take a Trip to Ras Abu Galum

Ras Abu Galum Protectorate is a natural paradise and Bedouin camp located just north of the Blue Hole. It is possible to hike there, take a boat or join a camel safari. Either way, the protectorate is defined by its breathtaking scenery, with plunging granite mountains meeting the Gulf of Aqaba in a dazzling contrast of ochre and blue. Flora and fauna include 167 species of rare desert plants, and resident animals such as the Nubian ibex, the striped hyena, and the red fox. Snorkeling and diving are popular activities, as are overnight stays beneath the stars at the remote Bedouin camp.

Sign Up For a Camel Safari

Those that want to take a ride on one of Dahab’s stately  “ships of the desert”  can opt for a two-hour sunset trip to the Blue Lagoon, or to the Wadi el Bida oasis with its elevated views of the town. Half-day safaris head deeper into the Sinai Desert to the oases of Wadi Qunai, Wadi Connection or Wadi Tiwelt; while full-day excursions explore the region’s spectacular canyons. Ain Khudra is a particularly worthwhile destination thanks to its Rock of Inscriptions, where ancient Nabatean, Greek, and Roman pilgrims left their mark on their travels from Jordan to Mount Sinai.

Explore the Area on Horseback

If traveling by camel doesn’t appeal, consider a horseback safari instead. Several companies offer the opportunity to gallop along the beach, or to ride through magnificent desert canyons to an oasis where a traditional Bedouin tea awaits. Those that want a deeper insight into Bedouin culture should sign up for an overnight stay at a Bedouin camp with dinner and breakfast included. Other horse-riding tours range from trips to the Blue Lagoon (where you and your horse can go swimming), to horseback snorkeling tours. On the latter, you’ll ride along the beach to the Caves, one of Dahab’s best-snorkeling sites.

Tap Into Your Spiritual Side

Spirituality is big in Dahab, with many hotels offering classes in yoga, qi gong, and meditation. Several yoga classes are aimed especially at freedivers, incorporating Pranayama breathing techniques to help students increase their breath-hold time and achieve mental balance underwater. If you’re looking for a more immersive yoga experience, keep an eye out for full moon retreats to the nearby wadis, where the silence and serenity of the desert help to inspire your inner wellbeing. Multi-day retreats also exist, combining beachfront yoga classes with open-air sessions amidst the dunes and canyons of the Sinai Desert.

Eat Brunch at Ralph's German Bakery

After an early morning dive, head to Ralph’s German Bakery , a Dahab institution since 2009. There are two stores - one in Assalah Square and one near Lighthouse Reef. Both specialize in German filter coffee and mouthwatering pastries made according to the master baker’s traditional Bavarian recipes. You can also enjoy breakfasts and light lunches (think salads, sandwiches, and omelets), or pick up freshly baked bread for a beach picnic or trip to Ras Abu Galum. Above all, both bakeries are a great place to meet other travelers, to surf the free WiFi or relax with a novel from the book-swap library.

Sip Cocktails at Yalla Bar

Bohemian-themed Yalla Bar is another local favorite, located directly on the waterfront and open from 7:00 a.m. until late seven days a week. Boasting a friendly atmosphere, good food, and affordable prices, the restaurant serves European and Egyptian dishes prepared using local ingredients. Sample fresh seafood, or tuck into a tasty pizza. Colorful sun loungers overlook the water and provide the perfect spot for a lazy afternoon of swimming and sunbathing, while Happy Hour sees travelers from all over town congregate to share shisha pipes or sip a cold beer. The bar also offers a comprehensive cocktail menu and free WiFi.

Visit St. Catherine's Monastery

Feel like a change of scene? Book a day trip to St. Catherine’s Monastery . Nestled at the foot of Mount Sinai, it is one of the world’s oldest working monasteries and an important pilgrimage site. It was built in the 5th century during the rule of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian, in the place where Moses was said to have heard God speaking to him from the burning bush. Today, an endemic bramble growing at the monastery is thought to be a direct descendant from that bush, while the Sacred Sacristy museum contains a world-famous collection of religious icons, art, and manuscripts.

Climb Mount Sinai

Most Mount Sinai hikes begin at night, putting you at the summit in time to watch the sun rise over the Sinai peaks and the distant Gulf of Aqaba. The mountain stands 7,497 feet / 2,285 meters tall, making the climb a significant physical achievement. It’s also a spiritual experience, as you’ll be following in the footsteps of countless Christian, Jewish and Muslim pilgrims all drawn to the place where Moses received the Ten Commandments. There are two routes up Mount Sinai; the more forgiving Camel Trail, or the Steps of Repentance, an arduous set of 3,750 steps carved during the 6th century.

Absolutely loved it, the service was seamless from the first pickup from the airport to the return drop-off. The local guides were excellent, knowledgeable...

Located 90km (56 miles) north of Sharm El Sheikh is the next major coastal settlement, Dahab. Sediments washed down from the mountains have created a broad sandy plain here. An Israeli-built town on a sandy cove, it has hotels, restaurants, camping and diving facilities and a reputation as the “Ibiza of Egypt”. It is world-renowned for its wind- and kite-surfing as reliable winds provide superb flat-water conditions inside Dahab’s sand spit. The scuba diving is also excellent thanks to the coral reefs just offshore, and there are several dive schools.

Cairo & a luxurious Dahabieh sailing cruise

Explore Egypt at a leisurely pace on board a dahabieh, a traditional sailing ship. In Cairo, visit the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, and in Giza, the pyramids; cruise to world-renowned sites alongside lesser-known treasures, such as Luxor’s tombs, el Kab and Gebel Silsileh’s Temple of Horemheb.

A Nile Cruise in Egypt

8 days  / from 2200 USD

A Nile Cruise in Egypt

Experience Cairo with the pyramids of Giza and the Egyptian museum before flying to Luxor to board your Nile cruise. Highlights include Karnak temple, Valley of Kings, Hatshepsut temple and an optional visit to Abu Simbel. Spend your last night in fascinating Cairo.

Across the plain 2km (1.25 miles) to the west, the Bedu village of Assalah sits next to a palm-lined horseshoe bay. Here, low-budget travellers stay in reed huts on the beach, which is lined with informal cafés.

Nuweiba is 75km (45 miles) further north, a slightly superior resort, although cheap accommodation in beachside reed huts and relaxed alfresco cafés can be found in Tarabin to the north. There are wide sandy beaches, but the reefs here are not as good as further south.

Nuweiba functions primarily as a port for the daily passenger and car ferry to Aqaba in Jordan , which is operated by Jordanian company AB Maritime. The ferry allows travel between Egypt and Jordan without transiting through Israel.

The resorts and dive shops in Dahab organise day and overnight 4x4 and camel trekking trips into the hinterland. These trips are well worthwhile: many of the fertile wadis (valleys) are extremely beautiful and it’s a great opportunity to engage with the Bedu who will be your guides and hosts.

Walking through the canyon, visitors will see an incredible display of natural hues and shades, from deep reds and oranges to bright yellows and greens. The canyon walls also reveal intricate patterns and shapes that have been sculpted over time by the forces of wind and water. #5 Be wowed by Ras Abu Galum

Ras Abu Galum is a remote and rugged coastal area located in the north of Dahab. Accessible only on foot, camel or by boat, it is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled natural reserves in the Sinai Peninsula. One of the main draws of Ras Abu Galum is its stunning beaches. Visitors can relax on the soft white sand and enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the Red Sea. 89 Things To Do In Dahab, Egypt

Originally posted on July 9, 2018 @ 1:55 pm

Contrary to popular belief, Egypt is a safe country. Especially Dahab is one of the friendliest and most welcoming places on earth. In fact, it is so amazing that I (a solo female traveler) decided to live here (here are my Top 10 Reasons Everyone Should Visit Egypt ).

I feel safer than in any bigger city in Europe, honestly. I created this list of Things To Do in Dahab to convince people to come to this wonderful little beach town on the Red Sea that I call home now and help you have a fantastic time.

It is so diverse, there is no way you will ever feel bored. If you don’t fall in love with the sea, you will fall in love with the desert. Or the people. Or the animals. Or the food. Trust me. You WILL fall in love one way or another 😉

Here’s 100+ reasons you should book your flight to Egypt right now! Forget the travel warnings and YALLA – come to Dahab!

I’ve divided the list into three different parts – Activities , Food & Drinks  and Daytrips

Activities in Dahab

  • Go to the Friday Market and enjoy some homemade international food.
  • Take a peek into the underwater world and book a Discover scuba diving trip.
  • Experienced diver? Go on a Night Dive with and explore the fluorescent nightlife underwater. If you have some more time, you could also go on a liveaboard dive safari !
  • Bring a bottle of wine and watch the sunset at the Laguna .
  • While you’re there, try Freediving . Dahab is one of the most popular places for Freediving (especially the Blue Hole), thanks to the lack of current and accessibility from the shore.
  • If you don’t like to drive and would rather move your lazy ass – go hiking! No matter where you go, it’s always beautiful, but St. Catherine is the prime destination for sure.
  • Take a Yoga Class at Coral Coast Hotel, there is a variety of a lot of styles, including aerial yoga, kids yoga, etc.
  • Go horseback riding into the desert or on the beach! You can even go into the water with some horses.
  • Swim out to the sea around sunset to see the mountains glowing all around you.
  • Looks like fun? Take some lessons. Dahab is one of the best places in the world to learn  kite- and windsurfing.
  • Go rock climbing in the nearby mountains of Dahab. You’ll be provided with all the equipment and assistance you need when you book a tour.
  • Take a few Arabic lessons so you can talk to the friendly locals in their language.
  • If you want to see a surreal underwater garden , rent a bike and go to Ras Abu Helal for snorkeling!
  • Go paddle boarding on a day with little wind. On some days you can even see a paddle boarding dog in Dahab 😉
  • Watch the sun rising over the Red Sea .
  • Try an Oriental Dance Class or attend salsa night at Jackie’s Mexican restaurant.
  • Relax at Three Pools for an afternoon and snorkel the three connected underwater pools.
  • If you’re lucky, you get to watch dolphins ! They’re not always seen around Dahab, though. In summer, your chances at seeing them are especially high around Tiran Island in Sharm El-Sheikh.
  • Interested in alternative healing methods/energy healing? Paola offers all sorts of sessions, from Reiki to Pranic Healing to Morphological Massage. You can even do a full Reiki course with her.
  • Go on a short camel safari to Wadi El-Toalat and a small narrow canyon for a panoramic view of Dahab.
  • Need a time-out? Charge your energy levels by doing a Detox Retreat .
  • Go to a concert and listen to some traditional Bedouin music.
  • Give your body a rest from all the sporty activities and enjoy a wellness day at one of the high-class spas at the Laguna (Meridien Hotel and Ecotel are amazing). While overlooking the sea, sweat out some of those toxins, get a body scrub and a relaxing massage. You’ll leave feeling like a new person!
  • Take a free Salsa class  on a Saturday night at Coral Coast Hotel.
  • Are you the esoteric kind of person or just want to try something new? Get a Tarot Card Reading at El Dorado Pizzeria.
  • Wave to Saudi Arabia! On most days you can see the Saudi Mountains on the other side of the sea.
  • Join a Drum Circle in the desert and dance to the melodic beats.
  • Need to get some work done? Visit the local  coworking space and set up your laptop with a view on the sea. It’s completely over-priced in my opinion and I don’t like the vibe, but I’m adding it here because it is an option and you might like it. (Edit: Two new co-working cafes opened since publishing this – Mojo’s at Lighthouse and Alchemist Hub , which is now located at Blue Beach, where the CoworkInn started).
  • Get a private boat and spend the day on the water.
  • Relax from a day full of activities with a Shisha by the Sea.
  • Enjoy not caring about make-up and chic clothes – put on some harem pants and embrace your dirty feet.
  • Dive the mysterious Caves south of Dahab and relax at the camp  “The Caves” after. Unspoiled nature and home-cooked food at its best!
  • Dive the Underwater Museum at the Lighthouse in Dahab. The i-Dive Tribe built a museum underwater, consisting of several artworks statues (including a huge elephant) made by Egyptian hands and representing the culture. Scientists expect that most of the coral reefs worldwide will die within the next 70 years, except those inhibiting the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. This museum serves as a new home for coral reefs . Plus it looks really cool, check out this video:

51. On a calm day (shouldn’t be too windy), rent a kayak and paddle out on the beautiful Red Sea to see Dahab in its full beauty, with the mountains in the background and the water in the front.

52. Test your performing skills – go to CarmInn for a fun karaoke night . And run if you ever see me there, you don’t want to hear that 😀

53. Let someone paint a henna tattoo  on your body to get the holiday vibe going. Don’t worry, it will disappear after 1-3 weeks. Be creative!

54. Visit the Art Exhibition at the Meridian Hotel that is held every three months. It’s a wonderful place where local artists share their work with everyone.

55. Get some tailor-made clothes from Nadr, a super talented tailor. His shop is located in a small alley opposite Ali Baba Restaurant, and he’ll sew you a stunning custom dress for much less than an H&M dress in Europe, eg..

Food & Drinks in Dahab

I have an overview of traditional Egyptian food here, you should try at least some of them!

58. Have Bedouin dinner in the desert (you could combine this with a camel ride or quad tour e.g.).

59. Hungover and in need of a proper breakfast? Ralph’s German Bakery has better bread rolls than my bakery at home in Germany. You also need to try the apple cake!

61. A hot summer afternoon without Ice Cream from Ice Bubble ? No chance!

62. Need some healthy food? Try the Vegan Lab, Beehive or Marine Garden for tasty vegan and/or raw food, including burgers, pancakes etc.

63. Take a break from your diet and indulge in Sahleb, my favorite Egyptian dessert.

65. Have Bedouin Tea every day and with everyone. No chance you’ll get around it.

67. Try some Mexican burritos at Jackie’s . The nachos are to die for!

69. King Chicken is always busy – good sign for all chicken lovers!

70. Try the taste of Molokhia , a traditional Egyptian stew or soup made from leaves of Nalta jute. Some people say it’s too slimy, but Egyptians love it!

71. Missing some Italian flavor? Dai Pescatori’s got you covered! Indulge in their famous pizza and pasta and feel like you’re in Rome – but next to the sea 😉

72. You need to try Om Ali – a traditional Egyptian desert equivalent to North America’s bread pudding. You can serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Or two. 😉

Day trips from Dahab

73. Spend a night in Ras Abu Galum , a protected natural area and Bedouin village. You can either walk (1.5hrs), take a camel or go by boat as it is not accessible by car from Dahab.

75. Walk or take a camel through El Wishwash Valley & Oasis , where you will see water running between the impressive rock formations.

77. Go to Gabr El Bint by boat or foot (17km), it’s an amazing day hike or trip.

78. The national park of Ras Mohammed close to Sharm El-Sheikh is one of the most beautiful diving and snorkeling spots in the world with more than 1,000 different species of fish. It is my favorite in Sinai!

79. Visit St. Catherine’s monastery , the oldest working monastery in the world. You can book a tour anywhere in town.

I have an extensive guide about St. Catherine that includes tips on visiting the monastery, opening hours, how to avoid the crowds etc.

80. If you’re up for a great hike, climb Mount Sinai . Watch the sunrise or sunset on top of the mountain where Moses supposedly received the Ten Commandments.

Read my  guide about climbing Mount Sinai before, though, as there are lots of things you need to know before you go.

81. Spoil yourself at Castle Zaman in Nuweiba. This place is more expensive than all other places in Sinai, but well worth the money. You get access to the castle overlooking the sea for a full day.

82. Walk around Nabq National Park to the mangrove forest and snorkel as long as you want.

83. See the magnificent Colored Canyon , a canyon that is 1 km long with rocks varying from sandstone to limestone and granite in all the colors of the rainbow.

84. Go on a trip to the White Canyon & Salama Canyon , see the famous Mushroom rock and have lunch at Ain Khudra Oasis & spring.

85. Can’t get enough of the incredible rock formations? You’re in for a treat! Another magical place for nature lovers is Rainbow Canyon . Not far is the Bir El Birea Oasis, where you can have lunch and relax.

86. Go on a tour to Serabit El-Khadem in the south-west of Sinai. You can visit the Hasthor Temple and Gebl el Fuga, the forest of pillars. The ancient Egyptians used to mine turquoise here.

87. Go on a mountainbike adventure to Abu Galum or Nabq. It can get challenging, so you should be fit, but for sure you’ll have an awesome time and a great workout!

If you’re up for a challenge, you can even go to St. Catherine. You can rent bikes from Dahab Cycling Club . There’s a Russian group called Velovuyki  that organizes cycling tours in Sinai as well.

88. Go on a 4×4 jeep excursion to see the “Eye of the desert” and the big sand dunes on the way to St. Catherine . Bring a board – this is where you can go sandboarding (read more about my Sinai sandboarding trip here ).

89. Go on a jeep safari to White Canyon and Salama Canyon.

The Best Things to do in Dahab, Egypt: A Bohemian Diver’s Paradise

When it comes to travel in Egypt we tend to think of the ancient history. The pyramids and the temples. Mummies and Nile cruises . Among the enchanting ruins is a splattering of chaos, especially when it comes to Cairo. Bazaars and souks will have vendors calling after you for your business as other locals promise to take you on a special guided tour. Egypt’s main attractions are awe-inspiring and magical and I loved my time exploring them. But I also found travel in Egypt to be exhausting. Until I went to Dahab.

View over Dahab

I heard about Dahab from a diver friend who told me to add it to my Egypt itineray when I visited in 2017. I followed his advice and spent a few quiet days in this sleepy seaside town that used to be a fishing village but had made a name for itself while diving. Dahab was quiet. It was chill and unassuming. It was the perfect way to end my Egypt trip and relax a bit before coming back to Canada.

Fast forward 5 years and I found myself in Dahab again. While living in Tel Aviv a friend and I headed down south to Eilat and hopped over to Egypt at the Taba border crossing for a few days of diving and ocean adventures. So much had changed and yet everything that I loved about Dahab had stayed the same. It was a perfect few days of sunshine and ocean and I can’t wait to go back. So, for anyone else planning a trip to Egypt or Sinai, here is my Dahab itinerary and suggestions for the best things to do in Dahab.

Is Dahab Safe?

Dahab street vendor at night

Dahab is located in the Sinai Peninsula which, for those familiar with world geography and world politics, is considered to be a hotspot for ISIS. Unfortunately, the Sinai Peninsula is listed on a lot of government travel websites as a no-go thanks to the threat posed by these terror groups. Now, nowhere in the world is ever safe and yes, Sinai has seen a number of attacks over the last number of years, but having been twice, I can only speak to my experiences and I have never felt unsafe in Dahab.

From the perspective of a female traveller, I really enjoyed Dahab. It’s not quite as strict or traditional as the rest of Egypt and while I am still very mindful that this is, in fact, a Muslim country I don’t feel out of place or awkward wearing shorts and t-shirt or tank top walking around or a bikini sitting on a sunbed at one of the beach restaurants. I have personally never been harassed or catcalled in Dahab either.

How to Get To Dahab

Most people who come to Dahab arrive via Sharm el-Sheikh which is the closest airport. From Sharm, it’s about a 1 hour drive. The best thing to do is arrange a taxi ahead of time, your accommodation can help you with this.

If you happen to be coming from Israel, as I did on my second visit, you can cross at the Taba border crossing. Note that depending on your passport, you may or may not need a visa if you are only travelling to the Sinai Peninsula. Be mindful that the border crossing can be very long and chaotic on long weekends and holidays as many Israelis like to go to Sinai as well. The best time to cross is midweek.

Please make sure to keep your passport accessible and handy at all times when driving through Sinai. There are a number of checkpoints and they may stop you and ask to see your ID and entry stamp.

*Note you will also likely need a Visa. You can get it online a couple weeks before your arrival.

Getting around Dahab

Dahab is really small so you can easily just use your feet and walk around. If you like, some places will rent bikes that you can use to get around faster. Alternatively, if for some reason you can’t walk or cycle you can use a taxi. You won’t have any trouble finding one, everyone is taxi driver in Dahab and you will be asked over and over again if you need a driver. If you do choose to use a taxi agree on a rate beforehand. Also, many taxi drivers claim they know where it is where you are going when it comes to hotels, but that’s not always the case. Try to have a screenshot of a map handy or the phone number of where you want to go in case they get lost.

Where to Stay in Dahab

map of Dahab

Dahab is quite small but that being said, there are still some places that are better to stay than others. The boardwalk area is the most popular but places a little further in generally aren’t too far of a walk either. The busiest and most central areas tend to be in the little Bay where the Liquid Dive Adventures pin is in the photo above.

As for budget, Dahab is quite cheap. Keep in mind Dahab doesn’t really do ‘luxury’ but there are still some nice hotels with pools at very affordable rates. Try  Red Sea and Relax, Casa d’Or Dahab , or Club Red Dahab

The Best Things to do in Dahab

So, what is there to see and do in Dahab? Quite a bit! Here are some of my favourite things to do in Dahab.

Colourful fish

Dahab is a diving paradise. No matter your experience, there are dive site options for you. Even if you have never tried it, Dahab is a great place to give scuba diving a shot. The dives here are all shore dives and the visibility is usually fantastic with very little current. You won’t see many big things but the corals are pretty and there are lots of schools of brightly coloured fish. The water temperature hovers around 20-26C so you’ll likely want a wetsuit but conditions are great. My favourite dive sites are Canyon and Blue Hole.

Dive shop recommendations: Red Sea Tribe or Liquid Dive Adventures . As always, read reviews first!

Hannah Logan learning how to free dive in Dahab

Scuba diving isn’t the only type of diving done in Dahab, it’s also a big community for freedivers. During my second visit, I decided to get my AIDA 2 certification and I absolutely loved it. I used Dahab Freedivers with Mo as my instructor and had a fantastic experience. If you are an experienced freediver you can also come here for training sessions.

Wander the Boardwalk

4 guys walking along Dahab boardwalk

The boardwalk of Dahab is where you will find most of the action during the day and in the evening. The waterfront is lined with restaurants all vying for your business with the promise of fresh fish, cold drinks, and day beds perfect for sun tanning. There are also a bunch of dive shops and little quirky boutiques and shops full of all your typical artsy souvenirs from postcards and magnets to funky pants and bags.

Take a Photo in Front of Why Not

Hannah Logan standing in front of the Why Not? Shop in Dahab

Speaking of shops on the boardwalk, Why Not? Is a must-see. This iconic storefront is all over Instagram and while I do suggest taking a shot outside (even if it is a little overdone), you should go in as well. The owner creates all kinds of weird and wonderful décor using old junk. His creativity is unreal and I had a lot of fun browsing his wares.

The Blue Hole

One of the most famous spots in Dahab is the Blue Hole. Located just a few kilometres from the town, the Blue Hole is a favourite spot for freediving, scuba diving, and snorkeling. It’s located just off the shoreline and drops down into a deep abyss of over 100m making it a cool site to see. For the most part, if you behave responsibly, this is a safe place to enjoy and visit. Divers, please do be careful, respect your limits, and go with a guide. The Blue Hole is nicknamed “diver’s cemetery” and while there is no official count, it’s expected that over 130 people have died here in the last 15 or so years. Proofs of some of these deaths are commemorated in the grim markers on the shoreline with the names of those who have lost their lives here. Note there is a 10USD fee to enter the Blue Lagoon (if you are diving here, your shop will normally include it in your rates)

  The Blue Lagoon

The blue lagoon is a natural lagoon located in the desert with pretty aqua-coloured water. It’s become a popular day trip destination for swimmers and kite surfers. It’s a bit of a journey to get there so make sure you have plenty of time, but if you are looking for a chill beach day with great views, this is the spot to go.

Castle Zaman

Sunset over the pool at Castle Zaman, Egypt

Another great spot for a day trip is Castle Zaman. Located about an hour’s drive from Dahab this castle-like facility is built on top of a hill overlooking the Red Sea and across to Saudi Arabia. Reservations must be made in advance (45 euro per person as of 2023) and include a meal (you can choose when its served). Drinks such as water, juice, soft drinks, cocktails are all extra. There are changing rooms with freshwater showers and a beautiful turquoise pool area. The ground is natural, there are no chairs or tables, so make sure to bring a towel or sarong to lay on.

Desert Camping

If you are up for an adventurous thing to do in Dahab you can also head into the desert and go camping for a day or two. These desert camps are rustic but cool experiences with the local Bedouins and have fun desert jeep tours with incredible desert and mountain scenery. If you have ever wanted to sleep under the stars, this is the place to do it.

Some of these tours can be booked in advance online but can also be booked on arrival. Your accommodation can help you arrange tours and taxis or you can walk around the town area and ask at the shops along the boardwalk area.

Where to Eat in Dahab

Smoothie Bowl in Dahab, Egypt

I was very surprised at the food and drink options in Dahab my second time around. My friend I was travelling with had some food intolerances but we had an easy time finding vegetarian and gluten-free options in several places. Some stand out places that we tried (or came highly recommended) include the following.

Zanooba Slow Cooked

This was our favourite spot. You need to reserve your table and choose your meal several hours early as the dishes here are slow-cooked for hours. You can pick from a variety of meat (or veggie options) and different sauces. We had squid in spicy tomato sauce and vegetables in lemon garlic sauce. We also tried the pink lemonade, which they make themselves, and it’s to die for. I highly recommend this restaurant in Dahab.

The Vegan Lab

Vegan and Vegetarians will like the Vegan Lab- a very instagrammable chic café known for the all-day breakfast and vegan spin on dishes. I’m not a vegan but did enjoy a few things here. My favourite was their mixed berry smoothie bowl and caramel popcorn latte (which has no coffee in it!). It’s worth noting that service here is incredibly slow so give yourself plenty of time.

Another good spot is the Russian Café called Red Cat. They have a bit of everything from meat dishes to salads and pizzas. Food quality is good and service is quick and friendly.

The German Bakery

If you are looking to grab a quick snack (or pastry) head to the German Bakery which has tons of options for all things sweet and carbs. Your best bet is to come early in the morning when they have the best selection.

Roots Kushary OR Kushary Station

If you have been to Egypt before you no doubt have had Kushary. It’s an Egyptian street food made up of rice, lentils, pasta, and a spicy tomato sauce. It’s a must-try if you haven’t had it. We were told that the best place to have it is Kushary Station for the classic version. If you are gluten-free then head to Roots Kushary (which is where we went). While it’s not ‘classic’ because it’s gluten-free it’s still a good and cheap meal.

Dai Pescatori

Last but not least is Dai Pescatori. It’s an Italian restaurant and known to be one of the best restaurants in Dahab with cute tables along the beach. There are some vegetarian and gluten free options as well.

Final Tips for Dahab

Hannah drinking mango juice on a beach lounge chair in Dahab, Egypt

Dahab is a great destination and should absolutely be visited as part of your Egypt vacation or on its own for a short break, especially if you love diving. It’s gaining popularity as a hub for digital nomads although, in my experience, the internet can be very hit or miss (especially at cafes).

It is worth noting that water is not drinkable here, you need to buy it (a large bottle will cost about 5 lira, which is less than 30 cents USD). You can find alcohol in some places, but not everywhere.

Bring cash. Very few places accept credit cards. There are plenty of ATMs around but they charge 13% -15% fee which is ridiculous. Try to get Egyptian pounds before you come or bring USD or Euros that you can exchange at a decent rate.

Egypt is a Muslim country and while Dahab is more laid back and chill please respect that this culture covers up more than others. If you are looking for ideas on how to dress in Egypt read this post.

Again, I felt very safe as a female traveller there and would highly recommend Dahab based on my experiences. There are plenty of great things to do in Dahab to easily keep you busy for a few days.

Ready to Book Your Trip?

Don’t forget travel insurance!

Please do not travel without travel insurance! I’ve had to use it multiple times throughout my travels and it has saved me thousands of dollars. You can learn more about travel insurance  here . If you are looking for a provider I love and recommend  SafetyWing . For Canadian readers, take a look at  SoNomad.

Book your accommodation

I love and recommend  booking.com  for accommodation. They have a range of hostels, guesthouses, hotels, and resorts. Plus, the platform has a great loyalty program that means the more you book, the more you can save.

Book your tours

My go-to tour provider that I love to recommend is  GetYourGuide . They have options all over the world and partner with local companies for everything from day trips to food experiences and even airport transfers.

Get connected

If you want to have data while travelling for online maps or any other needs, an esim is one of the easiest solutions. I’m a big fan of Airalo and have used their sim cards around the world from Brazil to Uzbekistan, Greece to the USA. It’s really easy- you download the app, pick what country you want an esim for, and after you purchase it follow the installation instructions. You can use promo code HANNAH3326 to save $3USD on your next esim purchase.

What brings you to Dahab? As it is a popular resort town, you’re likely there to explore the wonderful opportunities available in the natural surroundings. After all, Dahab is perfectly situated near the Red Sea and the Sinai Desert. Make your trip complete with these top things to do in Dahab.

1. Snorkel, Scuba Dive, or Free Dive at the Blue Hole

One of the main points of interest in Dahab is the Blue Hole. It is a popular snorkeling, scuba diving, and free diving site located in the Red Sea just a few miles north of Dahab.

Located close to the shore, it’s easy to access and reaches a stunning 463 feet in depth (130 m)! Additionally, at 172 feet deep, there’s a tunnel called The Arch that connects the Blue Hole with the open ocean. This tunnel is only accessible to technical divers, but recreational divers can explore the Blue Hole via the popular Bells to Blue Hole dive.

Just walk north down the beach walkway until you reach Eel Garden, then walk 2 more minutes until you hit the end of the promenade. Here you’ll find the market which sells a variety of homemade foods and other souvenir like items. It’s only about an 8 minute walk from the main Lighthouse area of Dahab.

Where to Stay in Dahab

Dahab has a wide variety of hostels and resorts, all at affordable prices. That’s right, there are hotel rooms for right around $20 – 25 USD. If you’re willing to spend a bit more, you can live in a bit more luxury.

The biggest thing I would take into consideration when admiring the many options available is location. I highly recommend staying within walking distance to the main promenade so you can walk to all of the cafes, bars, and restaurants that Dahab has to offer.

Budget Hotels in Dahab

As mentioned above, accommodations are extremely affordable in Dahab. That being said, there are some that are even more budget friendly than others. Here are my top picks for cheap hotels in Dahab:

  • Elrayga Camp Dahab
  • Dahab Plaza Hotel
  • Golden Europe Hotel

Mid-range Hotels in Dahab

There are no super expensive hotels or resorts in Dahab. Fortunately, this means you can get luxury at a much lower price. Here are your best bets for the most bang for your buck while being close to town:

  • Casa d’Or Dahab
  • The Bridge Dahab
  • Sheikh Ali Dahab Resort

21 Exciting Things to Do in Dahab Egypt

Things to do in Dahab Reading time: 27 minutes

You’re here because you’re looking for things to do in Dahab, no? Well good news, you’ve come to the right post. I spent one week in Dahab Egypt in January 2024. While this may be a small fishing village, it has slowly become a haven for like-minded people looking for a chill life along the Red Sea in Egypt.

Dahab attracts remote workers, digital nomads, adventurers, yogis, and divers- both international and Egyptian. It has a wonderful mix of people from all over the world, cohabitating in the same, very chilled out space. I’ve heard countless stories of people who went to Dahab to stay for one week and ended up living in Dahab for months or years. Maybe that will be you?

In this travel guide, I’ll discuss the places to visit in Dahab, nightlife in Dahab, getting to Dahab, etc.

Where is Dahab Located in Egypt?

Dahab is located on the east coast of the South Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. The Sinai Peninsula is in the northeastern corner of Egypt, bordering with occupied Gaza and Israel. Dahab is located one hour north of Sharm El Sheikh along the Gulf of Aqaba coast (which feeds into the Red Sea).

Things to do in Dahab

This may be a small town, but there are plenty of activities to keep you busy. Several of the activities involve tour groups or private transport out of the city, but many of them can easily be done on foot without leaving the borders of town.

Walk the Dahab Boardwalk

One of the first things you should do when arriving in this coastal town is take a stroll along the boardwalk. This is the best way to get acquainted with the place. You’ll notice that there are very distinct vibes in each section of the walk, which is exactly parallel to the sea.

The more north you go, the quieter the walk becomes. It’s very peaceful and calm. There are restaurants and cafes on the north end, but they tend to be less crowded. If you keep going north, even those cafes will end, and you’ll arrive at a very chill beach.

Things to do in Dahab: Walk down the main street. There are several shops and restaurants.

The center of the walkway is full of restaurants, cafes, massage and nail salons, diving companies, tour companies, shops, etc. It is very crowded and full of people and movement.

If you keep going south, you’ll cross a bridge. On the other side of the bridge, the vibe changes again. It’s quieter over, there are several jewelry and soap shops, but no real beaches. Once you reach Yum Yum (I’ll talk about this below), things start to get very local. You will rarely see a tourist on the road beyond Yum Yum. It is full of locals going about their daily business.

Buy Handmade Jewelry

Once you cross the bridge on the south end of the boardwalk, you’ll start to notice many jewelry shops. They have very reasonable prices for high-quality work. My favorite shop was Abo Karem (pictured below). The jewelry is beautiful and all handmade by the man in the red in the photo below. He is teaching his son the trade as well. The duo was adorable and made the buying experience even more fun. The young boy spoke English and did all the translations for his father. I bought the ring below for 800 EGP (25 USD), which I found to be a great price. It is all silver, but more importantly, I love it!

this is the outside of the abo karem jewelry shop

Make friends and join activities

Dahab is one of the easiest places to make friends. There is one long main strip that goes through town, and you’ll start to see the same people every day. On our bus from Cairo to Dahab, we met a local guy, Mo. Without planning, we ran into Mo every single day. Mo introduced us to new people and before we knew it, we had friends.

Even if you don’t find yourself a Mo, you can still make friends easily in Dahab. There are multiple Whatsapp groups with posts every single day, inviting you to do yoga on the beach, come to the market, do this event or that. Several bars hold weekly events.

things to do in Dahab: This is a chalk board advertising all of the local events at the bar all week.

For example, we found a place called Tota to be a great center for nightlife in Dahab (chalkboard above). If you plan to spend some time in Dahab, throw yourself into these social events and you’re sure to make friends quickly and easily. This is a place where everyone is open to new people and new experiences. Side note, you can find beer at Tota.

Dahab Nightlife: Join open mic

One of the best social events in town is the open mic. It was started a few years ago by a German guy out of his apartment. From there it kept growing every week and now it is a huge weekly event, held at Tota’s (mentioned above).

things to do in Dahab: go to open mic night at totos.

The open mic event is held every Tuesday at 7:30 pm. However, I suggest you arrive early. When we went, we arrived around 7:45 and the place was already packed with at least 100 people sitting on cushions facing the ‘stage.’ We were lucky to get a spot. People sang (including my friend), told stories, and read poetry. The crowd was very supportive, and it had an overall good energy. Even if you don’t plan to perform, just existing there is a great time.

Have a beer by the sea

There is truly no purer heaven than enjoying a beer under the sun next to the sea. If I had my choice, it would be a craft hazy IPA, but alas, things aren’t always perfect. So the next best thing is a local 10% Egyptian lager called Sakara, which is surprisingly rich and easily drinkable.

Things to do in Dahab: have a beer at a seaside restaurant along the main drag. Nicki sits on a lounge chair staring at the sea with a beer in her hand.

Several bars or restaurants in the center of the boardwalk have seaside tables and beach chairs where you can spend a relaxing afternoon. It is okay to wear a swimsuit at these places. A few of my favorites were the Yalla Bar and Nirvana .

Try local cuisine

Dahab is full of fantastic international cuisine from Chinese to Thai to Mexican, etc. However, prices for the majority of restaurants in this town loved by foreigners tend to be more expensive than in other parts of the country. But if you want to try the local food, you’ll be treated to both amazing food and fair prices.

things to do in dahab: Eat at local restaurants like Abo Ahmed. So good and cheap.

My two favorite local spots in Dahab are Abo Ahmed and Yum Yum . They are both standard Egyptian foods such as falafal, fuul (fava beans), shakshuka, baba ganoush, etc. A falafal sandwich at Abo Ahmed was 50 EGP (1.60 USD), and a full meal for 2 people at Yum Yum was between 60-100 EGP (2-3.25 USD).

Looking at the photos above, the two on the left are of Abo Ahmed (in the center of town), and Yum Yum (photo on the right) is at the end of the southern part of the main street.

Have an Egyptian breakfast with a sea view

In my opinion, the best part of Dahab is in the northern section of the main street. Here some beautiful restaurants and cafes offer free wifi. Most of the restaurants in the center do not have wifi. These restaurants are also quiet, peaceful, less visited, and have an amazing view of the sea.

things to do in Dahab: have breakfast by the sea. There are many restaurants and cafes along the water. This is an amazing cheese with bread.

Some of the best meals I had in Dahab were in this area. My two favorite restaurants in this area were L’Beach (photos above) and Mirage Restaurant (photos below). Delicious food, great views, and perfect ambiance. Spending time eating, reading, and enjoying these places were some of my best moments in Dahab.

Enjoy a quiet beach day

The center of Dahab can quickly start to feel monotonous or overwhelming. More people, more movement, more shops, etc. If you want a quiet beach to enjoy, just head north. Follow the main street north until the seaside restaurants and cafes end. Then you’ll arrive to a beach that looks like a postcard.

In Dahab, you can go to the northern part of the beach that is super chill and empty. It's peaceful there.

The red rocky mountains extend in the distance. The palm trees jut out of the ground and run parallel to the coastline. The water is calm. Small boats oscillate back and forth on top of the waves. This is the perfect spot to get up early and watch the sun rising in the east over the water. It’s also the perfect spot to enjoy a warm day under the sun or a relaxing time as the sun goes down behind you. It’s also a great place to come to meditate or do yoga, as it is so peaceful and calm.

Watch the Sunset on the Dahab Cliffs

One of the best places to visit in Dahab is the northern cliffs to watch the sunset. You can find this on Google Maps as “ Footpath to viewpoint. ” It takes about 30 minutes to walk to this point from the center of town. You can walk along the beach for a more beautiful journey to get there.

Hike to the cliffs in the northern end of Dahab to see the best sunset. Nicki is standing on top of the cliffs.

Once you pass an open field to your left, and the beach to your right, you’ll reach the Bedouin Moon Hotel. Just before the hotel, you should turn left onto a dirt road. Walk about 5 minutes up the dirt road, and you’ll see a small path on the right leading up into the hills. It looks more intimidating than it is in reality. I did this “hike” in sandals.

As you walk up the path, you’ll see a few a small makeshift tea shop with pillows. You can keep going up until you see a white flag on a flagpole. From there you can enjoy the sunset. However, if you arrive a bit before the sun goes down, you can keep following the path and enjoy a little hike. The views are amazing from up here. You can see both the city, the sea, and into the distance on the red cliffs.

I use AllTrails Plus when I go hiking. I highly recommend it as you can download offline maps, and send out “lifelines” to friends and family to let them know exactly where you are. You can rate trails, and get inspired to try new ones. The membership is $35/year, but with this discount, it is just $25 for the year. That’s barely $2/month.

Hike to Mt Sinai at Sunrise

Taking a trip to Mt Sinai was a highlight of my time in Dahab. It’s an overnight trip, and you will be tired the next day, but you’ll also be very happy. You can do this trip on your own but you will have to arrange for permits and a driver. The easiest thing to do is pay for the tour, which includes permits, transportation, and a local Bedouin guide who leads you to the peak. For just $25, it is well worth the money. Tip : It is better to pay with USD than EGP, so make sure to bring cash with you.

With the tour, you’ll probably leave Dahab about 10-11 pm and drive to the St Catherine area. From there you’ll hike to the peak of Mt Sinai, see the sunrise, and then head back down. You can see the monastery once you reach the bottom of the mountain again the next morning. You’ll arrive back in Dahab the next day around 11 am.

Nicki smiles at the camera, enjoying the first hints of daylight after hiking Mt Sinai to see the sunrise.

Visit St Catherine’s Monastery

If you are not a hiker, but you’re still interested in the historical or religious importance of St Catherine’s Monastery, you can arrange a trip for just this. Some tours provide just the tour of this Orthodox Church without all the outdoorsy stuff. This is the oldest Christian monastery in the world that has been continuously inhabited. It is also the site of the “burning bush” mentioned in that famous religious text called The Bible. You may have heard of it.

See the White Canyon and Colored Canyon

These are thin red rock canyons that are reminiscent of Antelope Canyon in the US.

Because this is outside of Dahab a bit, it does require a tour, unless you prefer to arrange transport and permits on your own. This tour usually includes White Canyon, Colored Canyon, and the Mushroom Stone. Tours usually leave at 8 am, and return to Dahab at 4 pm. Transportation, a guide, and lunch are all provided. The price is about 25 USD, and you should make sure to bring cold hard cash in USD to pay this.

Go Scuba Diving and Free Diving

Dahab is the most well-known for scuba diving and free diving. People come here from all over the world just to dive. There are diving centers focused on Koreans, Russians, etc. If you are a diver or want to learn how this is the ideal place. I might be the only person on earth who doesn’t like scuba diving (yes, I’m certified and I’ve done it before), so I didn’t try it in Dahab, but from what I’ve heard, you can see some of the most incredible underwater sights here.

Visit the Blue Hole in Dahab Egypt

Dahab owes its growing diving community to the Blue Hole. This is what made Dahab famous. It is apparently also one of the most dangerous places to dive in the world because it is so deep. If you join a diving course, you will likely come here at some point.

yellow fish on blue coral reef

But if you don’t want to do an entire scuba course, you still have options to come and see it. There are several tours offered for a day trip of snorkeling and admiring the surrounding area with its coral reef. It is located about 30 minutes from Dahab.

Many of the tour operators offer various versions of the same thing. You can come solely to the Blue Hole, or you can combine it with a trip to Abu Galum and the Blue Lagoon as well, for about 30 USD. Snorkeling equipment should be provided as part of the tour. It is usually a full-day tour from 9 am to 5 pm.

Swim in the Wadi El Wishwashi

When I went to Dahab in January it was warm, but a bit too cold for a big swimming day. But if you come to Dahab in the warmer months, this is a highly recommended experience. The Wadi El Wishwashi is a big swimming hole in the mountains. The hole fills up due to the rains that fall every winter.

Tours here usually start at 9 am and return to Dahab at 4 pm. Transportation, guide, snorkeling gear, and lunch are included. Some tours combine Wadi el Wishwashi with Ras Shitan. The trip is usually from 8:30 am to 5 pm and costs 25 USD.

Go Kite Surfing

Because of its location along the Gulf of Aqaba, the area around Dahab is a paradise for kite surfers. The best thing to do is arrive in Dahab and ask around where are the best spots. Everyone knows each other and someone can find you the info. They’ll probably even invite you to go along with them.

Take a Boat Trip

One of the biggest things to do in Dahab is take a boat trip. There are several versions.

You can take a glass bottom boat at Laguna Beach and go out in the water to snorkel at the Napoleon Reef. This tour usually lasts 1.5-2 hours.

You can also go on a tour with a much bigger boat that will take you out into the middle of the sea. They have both half-day and full-day tours. Both tours include transportation, snorkeling equipment, and meals. The full day should cost around 25 USD.

Share an evening with Bedouins

The Bedouins are the indigenous people in this area. There are several opportunities to spend time with them and see a bit of their customs and cultures. There are Bedouin parties, Bedouin dinners, drum lessons, etc.

You can usually arrange these evenings with a tour company or your hostel. Many of the hostels provide this activity in their weekly schedule.

things to do in dahab: have a dinner or drum circle with bedouins in the desert. This is a fire in the desert.

For example, if you would like to spend an evening with the Bedouins, the cost is usually around 250 EGP (10 USD) for 2 hours. The price included door-to-door pick-up/drop-off transportation, tea, and a drum lesson around a campfire in the mountains.

Ride a camel in the desert

Riding a camel in the desert is a quintessential experience everyone should have if you are interested in this type of landscape. I have ridden camels through the desert in both India and Morocco and it’s amazing (though your bum will be sore by the end of the day).

people riding camel on desert

The tour operators in Dahab usually offer a one or two-day overnight camel trip into the desert. You can ride a camel in the White Canyon, Ain Hodra Oasis, Arada Village, etc. Transportation, camels, lunch, and a guide are included.

If you decide to do this type of trip, I suggest inquiring into the care of the camels. Animal tourism can often be detrimental to the health of the animals that are being promoted. Therefore, I suggest doing your research to find a group that treats their camels well.

Do a Jeep Safari into the desert

If riding camels is not for you, then taking a jeep safari into the desert is another great option. There are several jeep tours offered from Dahab that last 2 days, sleeping overnight in the desert with the stars above you.

You will start at 9 am, and return to Dahab the next day around 4 pm. On the desert tour, you’ll have the chance to visit the White Canyon, Ain Hodra Oasis, Colored Canyon, Nawamis, Hedoda Sand Dunes, and Dragon Head Mountain.

The price includes transportation, food, and a guide.

Ride a Quad Runner in the Desert

Another way to see the desert in Dahab is to ride a quad runner. This trip is usually 2 hours long, from 3-5 pm. The times may change depending on when you are there, as they revolve around seeing the sunset at Twailat Mountain. The cost for a 2-hour trip is 25 USD.

How to choose your tour guide

There are so many tour companies in Dahab. You will notice this quickly as you walk along the boardwalk. The majority are in the center of town, where all the movement happens. As you walk around, you’ll see that each company offers a very similar experience for similar prices, with slight variations.

There are a ton of things to do in Dahab and there are also so many tour operators.

A lot of times they are just the sellers of the experiences. You’ll notice that when you actually get picked up, you’ll be combined with people who have arranged the same tour from another company. It’s like a funnel system. There are honestly so many things to do in Dahab, far more than I have listed above, including cycling trips, plane rides to Luxor, or long-distance rides to Jerusalem or Petra, etc.

Everyone who works in tourism in Dahab knows each other and they are all connected. For example, when I tried to do the Colored Canyon trip, my guide Jimmy canceled on me at the last minute. Then I contacted Mohamed from Planet Safari to see if they had any availability. They did not, but Mohammed contacted Jimmy to see if he had any room without knowing he had already canceled on me. It was a big game of tour telephone.

Because everyone is connected, and all the experiences are similar, you will probably enjoy the trip regardless of who you choose. However, you should definitely ask around at many places, and use your intuition to do the trip that feels the best to you.

Tips for taking tours in Dahab

  • Ask about the trip you’re interested in at several locations to see price/experience differences.
  • Pay in USD- it will be much cheaper if you pay in USD.
  • Don’t pay in EGP- they will charge you the Black Market price, which nearly doubles the cost.
  • Ask a ton of questions before you go- how will the weather be? What should I wear/bring? additional costs?
  • Try to organize the trips you’re interested in earlier in your trip, in case there is a cancellation.
  • Ask local friends. Usually, you can get cheaper prices from personal recommendations.
  • Communication with tour operators will be through WhatsApp.

Getting to Dahab

If you’re only going to Dahab or the South Sinai Peninsula area, you may be able to enter visa-free for two weeks. However, if you are planning to go anywhere else in Egypt, you’ll need to get a 30-day Egyptian visa. Below I’ve listed the most common ways to reach Dahab from Hurghada, Cairo, and Sharm El Sheikh.

Read more: Everything You Need to Know Before Coming to Egypt.

From Hurghada

Previously there was a ferry that went between Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh. This was our original plan. However, we were saddened to learn upon our arrival in Dahab that this ferry was no longer running. Hopefully, it will again in the future because it makes the most sense.

To take a bus to Hurghada, you would have to go back up to Cairo, and then back down to Hurghada. Hours of wasted time. Because we couldn’t take the ferry, we bought last-minute flights between Sharm El Sheikh (one hour south of Dahab) and Hurghada.

Most people in Egypt use Skyscanner for flights, or GoBus for buses. Our one-way flight from Sharm El Sheikh to Hurghada was 40 USD.

This is the small airplane between Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada.

Bus from Cairo to Dahab

You can fly to Sharm El Sheikh from Cairo, and then take a taxi to Dahab. However, the most cost-effective way to reach Dahab is via bus. The website GoBus will show you all the timetables between the two cities. There are two options: bus or minivan. The bus takes about 10 hours and is not very comfortable. The minivan is a Sprinter van and takes about 7.5 hours. I recommend the latter.

We had trouble purchasing tickets online with our international credit cards and needed a local friend to help us out. If this happens to you, ask a local to help, or buy directly from the station in each city.

The Go Bus parking lot is across the street from the Ramses Hilton Hotel, underneath the overpass.

In Cairo, the GoBus station is near the Ramses Hotel in downtown Cairo (top left photo). In Dahab, it is a small office at the intersection of the large main road and the road that enters town (top right photo). It took us just 15 minutes to walk from the Dahab GoBus stop to our hotel.

From Sharm El Sheikh to Dahab

The closest airport to Dahab is in Sharm El Sheikh. It is a small airport with very few options for eating or drinking. Don’t expect much. You’ll need to pass through many X-ray machines inside the airport. Most people in Egypt use Skyscanner to look for flights.

The driving time between Sharm El Sheikh and Dahab is about 1 hour. The easiest thing to do is get a taxi. From the airport, they may try to charge you more. However, the going rate between the two cities should be about 900 EGP (30 USD).

This is the taxi driver’s number we used: +20 106 722 1603

Where to stay in Dahab

Dahab is full of fantastic hostels, hotels, and guesthouses for all budgets.

Elite Residence

The rooftop of Elite Residences. The best place to stay in Dahab.

We stayed here for an entire week and loved it. We had the best internet here in all of Egypt coincidentally. The room was clean, modern, and comfortable, and included a kitchen. The owner is a great guy and will do anything to help you. The rooftop is a super cool place to hang out. It’s a 5-minute walk to the main street.

Check availability and BOOK the Elite Residences in Dahab here .

My Hostel in Dahab – Dive center

This is a very popular hostel in Dahab. It includes breakfast and arranges several activities each week. It is a great place if you want to do a dive course as well, as this hostel also moonlights as a dive center.

Check availability and BOOK the My Hostel in Dahab here .

The Dar Dahab is in the perfect location. It’s up in the northern beach area that is super calm and chill. It’s easy enough to walk to the center if you want more movement, but it’s the perfect place to sleep and exist in a quiet area. It is a beachfront property and has amazing views of the sea. You can pay a bit extra if you want breakfast.

Things to do in Dahab Final Thoughts

I wasn’t sure how I would feel about Dahab when I went. I worried it would feel like a town taken over by foreigners causing it to lose its charm, like another Tulum or San Marcos along Lake Atitlan. But by the end of the week, I was in love. Dahab has amazing people, good energy, and a very chilled-out vibe. I would absolutely return for another visit. I was surprised by how much there was to do and see in Dahab and its surrounding area. My only regret is not doing more.

If I didn’t already have accommodation booked in Luxor, I would have easily decided to stay longer in Dahab. It’s truly a magical place.

Dahab (دهب) is a town in Egypt , 85 km (53 miles) north of Sharm el-Sheikh on the Gulf of Aqaba, near the southern tip of Sinai . It is a place that many have fallen in love with over the years, and return to time and time again.

Understand [ edit ]

dahab travel egypt

Dahab was once an isolated coastal village inhabited only by the local Bedouin. In 1980, there were fewer than 30 Bedouin families in Dahab. Like the Bedouin inland, they had a self-sustaining lifestyle but in Dahab this was based on fishing as well as traditional goat herds. During the summer, many inland Bedouin came to Dahab for fishing and to collect dates, and to enjoy life by the sea. To this day, favourite presents from Dahab (for the inland Bedouin) are dried fish and dates.

Dahab's isolated location, idyllic setting and laid-back Bedouin hospitality made it a favourite destination for all who stumbled upon it. In the beginning (1970s), this was mainly Israeli soldiers or people from the kibbutz during their leave. During the 1980s it turned into a hippie hangout, and in the 1990s adventure enthusiasts from around the world began to discover Dahab's natural wonders. The combination of Red Sea and Sinai desert make Dahab perfect for world class windsurfing, scuba diving, freediving, rock climbing and of course desert trekking with the Bedouin. Add to this cheap accommodation on or near the beach, inexpensive food and drink and a relaxed atmosphere, and you have a heady enticement for the young and young at heart.

Today's Dahab has evolved into an "alternative resort" - the home of independent and adventurous travellers, but also with some more upmarket resorts and hotels. Most of the latter are in the Laguna area or outlying. For some people, this mix is part of Dahab's charm ("everyone welcome"), others regard the mix up as a problem: Prices in Assalah are artificially increased which makes it less and less interesting for backpackers, though some locally-run camps still keep affordable. In contrast to that, many package tourists and families won't feel comfortable with the lacking conveniences and the all-handmade-look among the hippies. Note the grotesque, forever unfinished concrete structures as a sign of this mismanagement.

Still, for everyone with an open mind, Dahab is definitely worth a visit and a place to fall in love with. Particularly in the old part of Dahab (Masbat and Mashraba), you will rarely find a visitor who comes only once to Dahab. To many people this has become a second home.

Climate [ edit ]

The climate is sunny and very dry with almost no rainfall. Summers are very hot at days and warm at nights, but winters are warm with mild nights.

By bus [ edit ].

dahab travel egypt

  • 28.48597 34.49682 1 Dahab bus station (East Delta) ( in the medina, 3-4 km west of the main tourist strip ). This is a woebegone place though there are shops in the vicinity. On arrival you will be mobbed by aggressive taxi drivers, who may even manhandle you into their car. A fair price is LE35 for the whole cab. Be prepared to walk it—and really mean it, it is the "Method Acting" approach to haggling - and their price may drop to something realistic. You want to head east, which is slightly downhill, then be trending northeast. So walk 200 m down to the divided highway El Nasr Road, then left / north for 200 m, then the first right is Peace Road which sweeps round into downtown Dahab. In town centre along Peace Road is the East Delta bus office , who sell tickets and can give the latest info on their buses, but buses do not call here: phone is +20 69 3641 808. ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • 28.49541 34.51502 2 Go Bus station . Almost opposite the East Delta bus office is where Go Buses arrive from Cairo. It is little more than a dirt parking lot but you have more amenities in the nearby town. ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • Buses no longer run to and from St Catherine.
  • From Cairo – Six daily Go Buses, taking 9 hr from Cairo's Turgoman station (central), Abbasseya station (30 min from centre) and Heliopolis (near airport). Buses may not serve all stations. Best to buy tickets in advance, especially for the night buses.
  • From Sharm el Sheikh town – The bus operator is East Delta. Their published timetable is only a statement of good intentions: services have been pruned back, and this is likely to get worse during 2020. But insha'allah , they may run from Sharm to Dahab at 6AM, 7AM, 8AM, 9AM, 2:30PM, 5PM, 8:30PM; and from Dahab to Sharm at 8AM, 9AM, 10AM, 11:30AM, 12:30PM, 3PM, 4PM, 5:30PM, 7:30PM, 8:30PM, 9:30PM and 10PM. The bus takes just under 2 hr.
  • From Sharm el Sheikh airport – Your first problem is to get to Sharm bus station 17 km away, see Sharm el Sheikh "Get in" for taxi tips. The bus service is erratic, so if you are arriving in the evening your best plan is to pre-arrange a taxi all the way to Dahab, see below. If you do get the bus, notice it stops at wayside halts to pick up waifs and strays, and at a checkpoint and filling station only 5 km from the airport: but will it pick up or drop off anywhere nearer the airport? No chance, they have probably had the frighteners put on them by the taxi cartel.
  • From the north – This is even more erratic, with maybe one bus or none at all from Taba through Taba Heights and Nuweiba, continuing from Dahab to Sharm. East Delta may not be able to say until shortly before departure whether one is running today.

By taxi [ edit ]

Always arrange this in advance through your accommodation! They should be able to negotiate something near the local price, about half what you would achieve by haggling yourself.

From Sharm el-Sheikh town or airport a fair price to Dahab would be LE600 (€40) for the whole cab. The airport cartel charges LE1,000, and while for trips within Sharm you can stomp out of the airport and try for a street taxi, that is less likely to work for an out-of-town trip.

From Taba a taxi all the way to Dahab might be LE1,500.

By boat [ edit ]

See Nuweiba for details of the ferries from Aqaba in Jordan. These also ply to Taba Heights further up the coast; this route is faster but you need to arrive in Egypt via Nuweiba if you are travelling beyond Sinai and therefore need an Egyptian visa.

Reaching the ferry port from Dahab is by bus or taxi. Usually a bus leaves Sharm at 8:30AM calling at Dahab at 10:30AM on the way north to Taba. So if you phone around 9AM, there should be word on whether it is running today, whereupon you either head for the bus station or negotiate a taxi.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

Orientation [ edit ]

Dahab has 3 distinct parts:

  • At the centre is Masbat Bay – Almost evenly divided by a floodway (the funny bridge over dry sand - except during a rare but impressive flash flood). The tourist area of Masbat effectively stretches north to Eel Garden (or Meleil as the Bedouin call it), and South through Mashraba. A corniche runs along this entire stretch of beach. This can be considered central Dahab, and you will find everything you need here.
  • A short taxi ride south is the Laguna (El Goze) – This is where the Corniche ends in the south. Here you find Dahab's first resort hotels (Hilton, etc.) You also find all municipal services: bus station, hospital, city council, etc.
  • Assalah – The residential area, mainly Bedouin but also with some foreign expats and Egyptians now also living amongst the Bedouin.
  • Plus outlying hotels – Stretching north towards the Blue Hole, and South to Wadi Gnai, there are around 15 outlying resort hotels - mainly booked as package holidays.
  • Plus Protected Areas – Dahab is bordered by 2 protected areas: in the south, Nabq Protected Area starts at Wadi Gnai, as in the North Ras Abu Galum Protected Area starts at the Blue Hole. 52% of the Gulf of Aqaba coastline is protected area, which is very important for managing growth and for preserving the reef and eco system. No building is allowed in protected areas, except traditional Bedouin structures.

A taxi within the centre should not exceed LE30, and LE40-60 for further out including the bus station, as of Aug 2021. Expect them to try to charge you twice that.

On foot [ edit ]

Getting around Dahab on foot is quite simple, the promenade runs right along the seafront and all the usual amenities are located along it.

By bicycle [ edit ]

Bicycles are a convenient way to get around Dahab and to get to surrounding sites such as Blue Hole and Three Pools. There is little traffic, and bikes are common so cars take them somewhat into account (as compared to anywhere else in Egypt). There are dedicated bicycle rental stores, but accommodation such as hotels may also have some available. One 28.49667 34.51649 1 bike rental shop is located next to Peace Bridge, which quotes LE100 for one day.

For some parts (such as the last part to the Blue Hole), an off-road bike is preferred. On the other hand, most rental places already seem to be mostly offering mountain bikes.

See [ edit ]

  • 28.494113 34.51719 1 The Nabataean Port ( 200 m south of the bridge ). It is just a few masonry foundations, but this was once a major port receiving spices and other valuable goods from India. From here goods were taken overland to Petra then onward to Gaza for shipping across the Med. The Nabataeans emerged as an independent Arab nation in the 4th century BC, for long acting as a buffer state for Rome then annexed into the Roman Empire in 106 AD, and disappearing by the 5th century AD. Just peer through the railings on the prom, you havve seen enough. ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • Very tall palm trees – Straight and stiff-leaved: how many can you spot? Yes, they are mobile telephone masts.
  • 28.895556 34.422113 2 Ain Khudra . Bedouin palm-tree oasis. Can be busy in the day. To see it at its best, include in a longer desert safari and stay for dinner and overnight. ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • 28.886206 34.426568 3 White Canyon . Right next to Ain Khudra. ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • 29.148893 34.592896 4 Coloured Canyon . Mainly a day trip. If you would like to combine as part of a longer desert safari, be sure to have a full Egyptian visa as it is often needed for the best route. ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • St. Catherine monastery and Mount Sinai are accessible as of 2023 but the previous public busses seem to no longer run and thus your options are to book a taxi or an organized tour ($25 everywhere in Dahab).

Offshore [ edit ]

Dahab's main offshore attractions are described here, north to south (the usual direction of current), as there are various ways to enjoy them. Dive shacks and other shore facilities are listed under "Do". The coral is very close to shore so you just walk in, but only at selected access points to limit the damage to coral and to you. Boats are only used for outlying sites with no access track. The tidal range in Dahab is at most a metre so all depths cited have that degree of flex.

  • 28.614785 34.559609 5 Abu Galoum ( 15 km north of town ). A nature reserve with camping and snorkelling. No road so you need a boat or camel to get in; few bother so it is a quiet spot. ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • 28.572 34.537 6 The Blue Hole ( close to shore at the dead-end of a dirt track 7 km north of town ). The signature dive at Dahab. It is safe and enjoyable provided you are sensible about depth limits, but the layout creates a temptation to dive deeper. Much deeper. Much much deeper and then it is curtains. This area has cafes and toilets but no dive shack, bring all your own kit. It can get crowded, as excursion buses often come from Sharm-el-Sheikh. The "hole" is a sinkhole some 100 m across and just over 100 m deep, surrounded by shallow reef, and with a "saddle" 6-7 m deep between the hole and open sea. The deep sheltered waters make it popular with freedivers, and it is often good for snorkelling and diving on windy days when other sites are too rough. Divers typically swim underwater across the hole, with the Arch glimmering far below (this would be a really bad time to lose a weight-belt). There is not much coral within the hole so they then cross the saddle to explore the better stuff outside. The Arch in the side of the Blue Hole is the killer if you are not geared up for a technical dive, and sometimes even if you are. It is a tunnel between hole and open sea that glimmers temptingly. "Aw c'mon, just a quick extra descent to look-see, can't hurt?" But it is deeper than it looks, with the entrance at 55 m. And it is not a simple archway but a 26 m tunnel. "Still, now we're here . . . " then it springs its trap: the tunnel roof slopes down to 85 m before trending up again into the open sea, while its floor drops away below 120 m. If you come down here breathing air or even nitrox, you will be as drunk as a skunk in a barrel of moonshine. And your air consumption is 9+ times faster than on the surface; if you are only toting a single gas tank, it will last less than ten min—not enough to get back, let alone for the considerable decompression period you have incurred. Technical divers with rebreathers and trimix gas also sometimes perish here, but their kit is inherently more hazardous, and it is not clear whether they suffer more accidents in the Blue Hole than at similar depths elsewhere. US$10/€9/LE150 fee for tourists (and a trivial fee for Egyptians) . ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • 28.573454 34.53927 7 The Bells . A nearby site often combined with Blue Hole by drifting south. It is a narrow groove through the reef; as well as the coral there is an arch at modest depth and a natural chimney you can swim up or down. Officially it is named for two rocks like church bells, unofficially it is because divers keep clanging their tanks against the walls. ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • 28.557 34.523 8 Canyon ( along the same track 5 km north of town ). There is a collection of cafes. The canyon is an underwater gully with overhanging walls. Enter and exit via the broader middle section, you are not allowed to pass through "The Fishbowl" chimney at its shallow end. In 2020 a humongous green moray eel resides on the canyon walls, rolling its jaws like a Moloch awaiting the pizza delivery boy. No fee to come this far . ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • Abu Telha and Abu Helal are at the north edge of Dahab, with a smaller canyon. The road is paved this far.
  • 28.506 34.52 9 Eel Garden ( at the north end of the promenade strip, 1 km from the bridge ). They are sand eels, scores of them shaped like a "?" and gently swaying. They retract as you approach and extend as you leave, to resume considering their question. ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • 28.499 34.519 10 Lighthouse ( just north of the midtown bridge ). The shallows are red gravel washed down from the wadi, deepening to a sea grass meadow which is a likely area to spot turtles or sea horses. A life-sized but dilapidated metal statue of an elephant at 18 m depth is the cue to turn north and come onto the attractive coral reef. ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • 28.491665 34.51462 11 Mashraba ( just south of the bridge is the mirror image of Lighthouse ). You descend across the gravel wash to the meadow then turn south along the reef. It is the house reef for the southside dive shacks. ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • 28.48 34.513 12 Laguna Beach ( 1 km south of the bridge ). The beach and nearby Islands . It is shallow, good for snorkelling and beginner divers.
  • The spit off the spit south end of the promenade is exposed to wind and currents, so people windsurf here but divers and snorkellers seldom come.
  • 28.475 34.503 13 The Lagoon . A sheltered sandy bay good for kiddy-bathing and windsurfing. No coral so you do not cut your feet, but it means nothing for snorkellers or divers to look at.
  • Gabr el Bint further south has no road access so you get here by boat.

Do [ edit ]

  • 28.45 34.4627 14 Wadi Qnai ( 7 km south of town ). Variously spelled, an attractive granite valley with an oasis, Bedouin gardens and beach strip. Good for hikes, dinner in the mountains and rock climbing. Sites are "Golden Blocks" (large coral blocks boiling with marine life), "Moray Garden", "Three Pools", "Om Sid" and "Caves" which are really just overhangs. This is the end of the track, as the road heads inland towards Sharm. Few come this far south, so the table corals are in better shape than near town. ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • Windsurfing and kite-surfing . Dahab has about 270 days a year of wind. Experts with their own equipment can also surf from Masbat Bay, but must take care not to hit the snorkellers and freedivers on Lighthouse Reef. Kite surfing can be done around the lagoon area, at Eel Garden or at other spots. Some kiters head out to the Laguna at Ras Abu Galoum - a stunning location and you will be just 1 or 2 kites rather than 10 or 20! For wind forecast for Dahab see Wind Guru . There are several windsurfing schools around Laguna area offering all levels of courses like Harry Nass Winsurf & Kite Centres Dahab and Happy Kite . ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • Kayaking – Sea kayaks are available for hire. From LE50/hr, or try a guided night kayak—great for hot summer nights.
  • Yoga , Reiki, and Chi Gong – As of 2020 no-one is advertising classes, probably the thing to do is link up informally with others.
  • Learn Arabic – and see Egypt#Talk . But make a start before coming here so that you can confidently exchange greetings and salutations. It's Egyptian Arabic you will use, do not bother with MSA which only newsreaders and government officials declaim.
  • Do nothing – Just chill, that is the most traditional activity in Dahab. Watch the rippling sea and the changing pattern of light over the mountains.

Desert excursions and trekking [ edit ]

Lots of agencies along the beach front are touting excursions. But the hotel and dive resorts also organise these, and have a stronger incentive to make sure their customers are happy. Trekking might involve hiking, horse-riding, camels, or various off-road vehicles.

  • Day trips might be to Wadi Qnai and Ein Khudra. These places can feel touristy and crowded but in the 2020 travel slump that is unlikely to be a problem.
  • Overnight is when you really get the desert experience. The canyons fall silent, stars blaze in a clear sky, the coffee-pot stews by the camp fire, and you sure wish you would brought an extra pullover and toilet roll.
  • Longer trips are grandly called a "safari", which of course is the Arabic word for a journey. The traditional destination was inland towards Mount Sinai, but this remains compromised by the terrorist threat. Tours also venture as far as Petra in Jordan, Jerusalem in Israel, and Cairo and Luxor in Egypt: they are all top-rank destinations well worth seeing, but deserve a trip in their own right. These safaris may involve a flight from Sharm but more often a very long bus ride, where the rest hours of the driver (and of the oncoming drivers) may be a concern. You may also need an Egyptian visa, which you do not for the Dahab area: the safari agencies can arrange this quickly.

Rock climbing [ edit ]

The Sinai Desert has excellent rock climbing in the granite mountains and wadis. October–April only (i.e. not the hot summer months). The main area near to Dahab is Wadi Qnai :

  • Vast amounts of perfect bouldering on granite boulders in shaded, sand-floored valleys
  • Single and multi-pitch equipped sport routes for all levels of climbers in Waterfalls, Camel Canyon and Wadi Connection
  • Top roping area especially for beginners and children in Middle Qnai
  • Plus new routing possibilities for sport climbs in many easily accessible areas.

Desert Divers have led the way in developing rock climbing in the Sinai. They can arrange for permits to Wadi Qnai, equipment hire, drivers, guides and anything else you might need. They have published the Sinai Rock Climbing Guide complete with topos and route descriptions. Their instructors are happy to share/offer advice to experienced climbers who can 'self-guide', or they can help you improve your climbing with beginner and Advanced technique courses.

St. Catherine also has incredible tradclimbing and bouldering. Base yourself in the village at Fox Camp [dead link] or Sheikh Mousa Bedouin Camp [dead link] with easy access (5 min to 2 hours) to more than 60 routes. All long multipitch (7+ pitch), but wide range of grades. If you are a group, it is great fun to head deep into the desert by camel where you will find unclimbed lines almost everywhere you look! Absolutely no bolting allowed in St Catherine, and please respect the holy mountains of Mt Sinai and St Katherine by walking the traditional pilgrimage paths rather than climbing.

Buy [ edit ]

Great buys are the usual Egyptian suspects: water pipes, rugs, oriental lamps, shirts in different lengths with embroidery, backgammon games, silver jewellery, etc. Prices are geared for tourists, so haggling is a must, pay max. 50-60% of the first price offered, anything else is a rip-off. If you are not sure about the price, go to the next shop, they all offer more or less the same things, and start bargaining again there.

Look out for Bedouin handicrafts, some beautiful pieces are available. Hand embroidered and made in Dahab, St Catherines and El Arish by Bedouin women. Sheikh Salem House has a good selection of items as does some of the other Bedouin establishments in Dahab.

It is almost impossible to get rolling tobacco in Dahab, be prepared if you are not keen on factory made ones.

  • Ghazala Market . If your stay extends with or without intention your shopping behaviour will focus on this market. Here you can find anything you need to update your on-the-road-equipment from functional to convenient. For local fare and much cheaper fruit and veg, go to Assalah shopping area (5 min taxi, or walk to Eel Garden then head into town). ( updated Mar 2020 )
  • Dahab Community Market ( Sheikh Salem House near Eel Garden ). Every F 3PM-7PM . You will find hand-made Bedouin and Egyptian crafts, jewelry, clothes, second hand bargains, foods from around the world including homemade Egyptian food, cakes and desserts. ( updated Mar 2020 )

Eat [ edit ]

The trick to eating cheaply in Dahab is to avoid seafront establishments and go a block or two inland, where prices are half for equivalent quality. Lots of budget places in the back lanes serve falafel, koshari, chicken and fish. For fish, the prices shown are usually per kilo not per fish. Try bargaining.

Stay safe [ edit ]

See the warning in the Sinai and Egypt articles for information about the security situation in Dahab.

Women travellers are safe in Dahab, but please be savvy:

Snorkeling along the reef can be hazardous if the wind gets up. Waves may dash you onto the sharp coral, the current may carry you past your exit point, and in a rising sea you may have difficulty spotting the next safe exit. Other water users have more escape options, eg divers can re-descend to pick out a route inshore.

Drugs , particularly marijuana, are widely available in Dahab but not legal. You would risk large fines and maybe a lengthy stay in one of Egypt's notoriously squalid prisons.

Child beggars: If you signed up for a group activity, like snorkeling along the coast or going for a tour into the desert, you will likely encounter child beggars. They usually are in a group of 5, boys and girls and will try to sell you bracelets. They are very instistive from the beginning and if you look at them, talk to them or buy from them, their style will get even more agressive and pushy and would be somewhat shocking.

Go next [ edit ]

  • Along the coast to the south, Sharm el Sheikh will feel very busy and tourist-trappy after Dahab. Going north, Nuweiba and Taba are little developed.
  • Crossing into Israel, Eilat is a brash building site. Just use it as a base or for its airport, or head swiftly on towards Jerusalem, the Dead Sea, or Jordan. Bear in mind that Israel does not stamp your passport but the Egyptian border post at Taba does, so it will be obvious from the exit stamp that you crossed into Israel.
  • Aqaba in Jordan is more conveniently reached by ferry from Nuweiba. It has great diving and is within an hour's drive of fabulous Petra.
  • Cairo and raffish Alexandria deserve several days to explore.
  • Luxor until 2019 involved travelling via Cairo, but will become more accessible if the Sharm-Hurghada ferry restarts in 2020.
  • Pilgrims to Medina and Mecca can reach them by ferry from Nuweiba (horribly congested for Hajj , quieter for Umrah at other times). Your Saudi Arabian visa needs sorting well in advance.

Dahab Travel Guide and Tips

In my last two posts, I have sung praises of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. By this, I mean the southern part of the peninsula, because the north still remains closed for any kind of travel. There is more to Egypt than just pyramids, ancient temples, and glitzy resort towns of Hurghada, Sharm-el-Sheikh, and Gouna. After getting bombarded with amazing experiences in one of the world’s oldest cultures, you would want a place to hang your hat, let your hair down, and simply relax. You are still on your vacation after all and meant to recharge your batteries. Dahab in southern Sinai offers you just that and it is a laid-back beach town, which is also famous as a diver’s paradise. I have talked about Southern Sinai safety issues and why you should visit Dahab at the beginning of this series. If the amazing photos of the Blue Lagoon and the lure of the Blue Hole have tempted you enough, then read on for a detailed Dahab travel guide and tips.

A bit of regional understanding of the Sinai Peninsula

The Sinai Peninsula is the only part of Egypt to be located in Asia . It is wedged between the Mediterranean Sea in the north and the Red Sea in the south. Acting like a land bridge that connects the two mega continents of Asia and Africa , Sinai is astonishingly beautiful. Some of Egypt’s premier Red Sea destination like Sharm-el-Sheikh is located here and Dahab is also close by. The Suez Canal connects the two seas through Sinai and due to recent unrest, northern Sinai remains a completely sealed off area. Southern Sinai, however, is as nice as ever, and Dahab lies there.

How to reach Dahab

Dahab lies 100km north of Sharm-el-Sheikh. The easiest and quickest way to reach Dahab is to fly to Sharm el-sheik airport. A taxi from Sharm airport to Dahab costs around 30-40 USD (2100 INR) and this depends on your polite bargaining skills. Egypt Air and Air Nile operate daily flights to Sharm from Cairo and Sun Express connects it with many European destinations like Cologne/Bonn. It takes approximately an hour to reach Dahab from Sharm and the drive through the mountains or along the coast is extremely beautiful. There are buses available from the Sharm bus station in town for Dahab and you will have to take a taxi from the airport to reach there. Alternatively, you can also arrange with your hotel/campsite in Dahab for pick-up and drop to Sharm-el-Sheikh.

There are basically three options for Cairo to Dahab bus journey.

  • Go Bus – A reliable bus company with many categories with different prices and comfort levels. The timetable is also quite sensible and it is the most comfortable way to reach Dahab by bus. Most expats living in Cairo opt for the night bus, which takes around 10 hours (with many checkpoints for baggage screening). The deluxe plus is a pretty comfortable option with moderate legroom, wide seats, and entertainment systems.

By private car

If you do not like the idea of public transport and have some cash to spare, then there is always the more comfortable choice of going to Dahab by private car. Hunt around at various hotel travel desks and travel agencies and make sure you know what kind of vehicle you are getting for your money. Prices vary according to car type and bargaining skills.

There are three routes to Dahab from Cairo and all of them will make you take the Suez Canal underpass. This is a high-security area and guarantees tight checks and long queues. Time your trip right so that you can sail through this bottleneck either at night or early morning. The three routes are –

  • Taba – Nekhel Road (540 KM) – recently not allowed to foreigners, Christians, military men & policemen (at the moment closed for all)
  • St. Catherine Monastery Road (600 KM), an extremely scenic route which we undertook

Understanding the Dahab town

Dahab is divided into two main parts: the new part known as Dahab City and the older part known as Masbat. The old part is comprised of three sections,  although it’s comprised of three sections, Assala in the north, Masbat in the middle, and Mashraba in the south. The old and new parts of Dahab are connected by a road and a seaside promenade. Laidback Assalah hugs the Ghazala bay and has a long stretch of cafes, campsites, restaurants, and hotels. The main market of Dahab, i.e. the Ghazala Market runs parallel to the corniche. Most budget accommodations are located in Assalah and there are plenty of scuba diving centers and snorkeling schools. Dahab main city lies in the west and the bus station is also there.

Getting Around Dahab

Dahab is small enough to explore on foot or by bike. There are plenty of two-wheeler rentals and you can also hire them through your hotel or campsite. Understanding Dahab town makes navigation easier. In Dahab, pick-up trucks operated by local Bedouins double up as taxis and make sure you agree on the price before hopping on one.

Places to Stay in Dahab

Dahab is most popular with backpackers and there are many budget accommodations there. Ranging from beach shacks, homestays, campsites, rental apartments, rooms, and guesthouses, Dahab suits all pockets. For those on extremely tight budgets, you can choose basic huts with shared amenities and bathrooms. Since it is fast becoming popular among mainland Egyptians and families with children, Dahab has plenty of luxury kid-friendly hotels. They are mostly from mid-range to luxurious and the best options are by the shallow lagoon. We stayed at Ganet Sinai which was a nice child-friendly beach hotel with small villas on the beach, surrounded by lovely gardens, pools, and playgrounds. For 60 USD (4000 INR) per night, we had a little beach villa with breakfast and dinner included.

The best time to visit Dahab

Dahab is a year-round destination you can visit year-round. While there is always sunshine and hardly any rainfall, Dahab has distinctly different seasons. The summer months of June, July, and August are super hot and best avoidable. Winter months are from November to February and while the sea is a bit too cold to swim, the days are nice and warm. However, it does get cold at night in Dahab in winter and the temperature drops to 10 degrees C. Spring and Fall are somewhere in between and the best time to visit Dahab.

The three most popular snorkel sites are the Lighthouse, Canyon, and Eel Gardens. The world-famous Blue Hole and Ras Abu Galum lie outside the town periphery. The Blue Hole is an underwater sinkhole that is extremely popular with divers. It also has some fantastic snorkeling spots on the outskirts. Ras Abu Galum is a national nature reserve, accessible by boat, camel ride, or hike from the Blue Hole. It has the gorgeous Blue Lagoon and is one of the top diving and snorkeling spots near Dahab.
  • Water Sports – Kite surfing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding are other worthwhile aquatic sports to try out in Dahab. The lagoon area has several schools offering lessons and equipment for rent.
  • Hiking – Dahab is set so snugly amidst alluring desert and rugged mountains, that you just cannot resist exploring both as well. You can do this either by day or multi-day hikes with local Bedouins or by camels. The scenery is a mindblowing mix of colourful canyons, imposing cliffs, and pretty oases, and you will simply love the solitude it offers. The best part of all is the delicious Bedouin meal cooked by your guide over hot coals in the open.

Dahab has a charm which makes it difficult to leave

Dahab has a charm which makes it difficult to leave

Leaving Dahab

Most people leave Dahab from Sharm-el-Sheikh, with a handful crossing over to Jordan by ferry. Many also cross the border at Taba to enter Israel. The ferry to Aqaba in Jordan leaves Nuweibaa which is an hour’s drive from Dahab. Buy the ticket in advance. There is plenty of day or short trips to Jerusalem from Dahab. Indian nationals, please bear in mind, that if you choose to enter Israel from Taba, it is helpful to go in a group and not get an exit stamp from Egypt on your passport. Going in a group usually helps prevents this as the exit stamp on your passport means that you can only enter Egypt until the MFO (Multi-Force Organization) border near Sharm-el-Sheikh. In case you have your return flight from Cairo, avoid any such complication. The Taba border crossing is relatively hassle-free from the Egyptian side, while from the Israeli end, it is (according to most travelers) a nightmare.

Things to remember when visiting Dahab

  • To make the Dahab trip as hassle-free as possible, it is advisable to travel with a valid Egyptian I.D. or passport, copies of your accommodation booking, as you may have to show them at checkpoints. In our case, it was easy since Tarek has the dual nationality of German-Egyptian and as his wife, according to Egyptian laws, I get treated as a resident. Please be aware that your bags will be searched at certain checkpoints, so try to cross the busy Suez Canal at night time.

7 Fun things to do in Dahab, Egypt

Updated: Sep 17, 2022

Dahab is a small coastal town on the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt. It's not only famous for its scuba diving, but also for its relaxed vibes as well as being a prominent digital nomad community. However, Dahab is so much more than that! In our opinion, this place has the best atmosphere in the whole country. In this blog, we narrow down our favorite (adventure!) things to do in and around Dahab.

Check out our video on Dahab to get a sense of what it's like there!

Where is Dahab and how to get there?

Dahab is located on the southeast coast of the Sinai Peninsula, about 80 kilometers northeast of Sharm el-Sheikh . Situated along a narrow strip of the Red Sea, you can see Saudi Arabia across the Gulf of Aqaba.

There is a bus from Cairo to Dahab for only $11 and the journey takes around 10-12 hours. From Sharm-El-Sheikh there is also a direct bus that operates once a day but taking a taxi is easier. This would take you 1 hour and 30 minutes to get to Dahab and it will cost around $30-50 (depending on how you arrange it!).

Important things to know before you go to Dahab

It’s probably best to visit Dahab between October and November or between March and May if you want to avoid the unbearable heat during the summer as well as the cold winter nights. In the winter it can snow in certain places like at Mount Sinai so we do not recommend going then.

Dahab overall is safe. The whole town is surrounded by security checkpoints so once you’re in the town you can go wherever you want on foot. They’ve had issues in the past (bombings) by terrorist groups however the last time was in 2006 so it has become more secure over the years.

It’s cheaper to get your PADI open-water diver certificate here instead of in Europe and the US. In Dahab, the prices range from $300 to $400 to get your PADI certificate while in Europe and the US this costs around $500. Another difference is that in Dahab you learn directly in the sea instead of in a pool first because of perfect conditions (reefs are right off the shore and water is shallow). This makes the experience also way more fun!

Nirvana: best Indian food - try the Malai kofte

The vegan lab: amazing vegan burger

Box meal: great noodles and rice

Fun things to do in Dahab

There are so many outdoor adventures to enjoy here and we’ll now tell you what fun activities you can do in Dahab.

You can also watch our video on what to do in Dahab .

7. Explore Downtown Dahab

For your first day in Dahab, we recommend taking a stroll downtown to get a lay of the land. Downtown Dahab has a chill, laid-back vibe to it. From small local shops to beautiful seaside restaurants and coffee shops, the atmosphere is relaxed everywhere you turn. Palm trees line the streets and every place you visit has a style of its own. Nothing is too manicured in Dahab, which is something we really loved about it.

6. Eat A Bedouin Dinner

Formerly a Bedouin fishing village, Dahab still maintains its rural way of life and culture. We had the opportunity to attend a Bedouin dinner in a small valley near Dahab with friends and it was a great experience. The Bedouin barbecue included chicken, vegetables, rice, local bread, and tea, which was delicious. You can easily book your Bedouin dinner in town, with different programs to choose from, whether you want to just chill beside the fire or enjoy some Egyptian traditional shows. Make sure to kick back and look up to the sky once the sun goes down. You might get lucky and see a few shooting stars!

5. Hike During The Sunset Around Dahab

One of the best activities to do near Dahab is a sunset hike. We found a great route where you can reach the viewpoint within about 45 minutes from the lighthouse area in Dahab. If you walk towards the Blue Hole from Dahab, then turn left at the first valley outside the town buildings, you will find a gorgeous red and brown valley. Walk up the gradual slope until you find big boulders on your right. Here, you can turn right and find a beautiful spot to enjoy the sunset overlooking Dahab. You can find the route on our map as you navigate towards the peak “Jabal Umm Misma”.

4. Dive In The Blue Hole

One of the most famous areas near Dahab is the Blue Hole. This has been nicknamed the “world’s most dangerous diving site” since there have been many deaths here over the years. But it’s also ranked as one of the top diving sites worldwide. The submarine sinkhole goes straight down for over 100 meters and is a natural phenomenon worth visiting. You can choose to either snorkel, dive, or just take in the sights. Since we didn’t have our PADI diving certification at this point, we decided to snorkel. Looking down into the infinite blue below the reef was a little scary at first, but we soon settled in and enjoyed seeing tons of new fish in the red sea.

3. Hike Mount Sinai

The Mt. Sinai hike, also called the Saint Catherine hike, is one of the must-do activities while in Dahab. We started the journey to the base of the hike at 10 pm from our accommodation in Dahab and started the hike around 2 am so that we could reach the top for sunrise. This trek is famous because it is the same place where Moses received the 10 Commandments from God. Therefore, it is one of the most sacred locations in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. While it was exhilarating to hike at such an odd time, we recommend doing this hike in the spring or summer when it’s warmer. During our trek, we ran into snow near the top, which made for extremely cold and slippery conditions. In the summer, you will likely have better weather for the sunrise and stay warmer throughout your journey.

2. Explore Abu Galum & Blue Lagoon

Another fun thing to do when in Dahab is exploring the nearby Abu Galum and the Blue Lagoon. To get to Abu Galum, you need to take a boat from the Blue Hole. Then, you can snorkel in the colorful reefs of Abu Galum before getting into a car to the famous Blue Lagoon. The turquoise-blue Lagoon is an oasis of tranquility and the perfect place to relax or try kitesurfing. We did this as a day trip, but we recommend staying the night in one of the so-called “Hushas” or small huts built by locals in the area. In this way, you don’t have to catch the last boat back to the Blue Hole before sunset and have time to enjoy the sunset and stars in this magical setting.

1. Learn To Scuba Dive

With beautiful coral reefs adjacent to the waterfront, learning to scuba dive is a must-do activity when in Dahab. The instructors are really passionate about what they do and the conditions are perfect here for beginners since the lighthouse bay area is protected from extreme currents and winds. We didn’t realize initially how much effort it would take to learn the theoretical and skill-based sections of the PADI open water course but were happy we did it. We got our training from Bana at Nomad Divers and highly recommend him for his professionalism and ability to get anyone comfortable with scuba diving, no matter their ability or comfort level in the water.

Other things to do in Dahab

Since we only visited Dahab for two weeks, we didn’t have time to do everything in the area. But there are many other great outdoor activities to do here, which include kitesurfing, windsurfing, free-diving, rock climbing, camel rides, horseback rides, and ATV rides. Other places that are worth visiting include Wishwashi Canyon , the Colored Canyon , Nuweiba , and Ras Mohammed National Park .

Researchers found the planet's deepest under-ocean sinkhole — and it's so big, they can't get to the bottom

By Li Cohen

May 1, 2024 / 11:56 AM EDT / CBS News

Sinkholes don't just happen on land, they also happen in the ocean where they're known as blue holes. And now, researchers say they've found the deepest one yet on the planet – one so large that they can't even get to the bottom.

It's the Taam Ja' Blue Hole in Mexico's Chetumal Bay, once thought to be the world's second-deepest known blue hole. But as researchers explained in an article published in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science on Monday, scuba divers went to the site at the beginning of December to take another look, and found it was far bigger that first thought.

"The TJBH is now the deepest blue hole discovered to date, exhibiting water depths surpassing 420 mbsl [meters below sea level], with its bottom yet to be reached," authors said in their journal article. The newly-recorded depth amounts to just over a quarter-mile below sea level into the mesopelagic zone , an area otherwise known as the twilight zone since sunlight in this layer is significantly reduced.

Previously, Taam Ja' was thought to have a depth of roughly 274 mbsl when researchers used a device known as an echo sounder to try and calculate its size based on the distance that sound waves travel. But because the shape of blue holes isn't predictable and water density can vary, that method was limited. This time around, they used a method known as SWiFT CTD that better measures conductivity, temperature and depth underwater. However, the instrument was not able to reach the bottom of Taam Ja'.

The updated size places it far beyond the depths of other known underwater sinkholes, such as the South China Sea's Sansha Yongle Blue Hole, which measures at about 301 mbsl, the Dean's Blue Hole in the Bahamas, which has a depth of roughly 202 mbsl, and the Dahab Blue Hole in Egypt, which has a depth of roughly 130 mbsl.

Blue holes may sound scary, but according to NOAA , each one can be an "oasis in an otherwise barren seafloor."

"Blue holes are diverse biological communities full of marine life, including corals, sponges, mollusks, sea turtles, sharks and more," NOAA says, adding that little is known about the areas because they are largely inaccessible and their distribution is widely unknown.

"The opening of a blue hole can be several hundred feet underwater, and for many holes, the opening is too small for an automated submersible," NOAA says. "In fact, the first reports of blue holes did not come from scientists or researchers, but actually came from fishermen and recreational divers."
