sikkim-trekking-2

The Singalila Ridge Trek is one of India's most spectacular hikes. With awe-inspiring views of the world's highest peaks, this hike is definitely one for your bucket list!

Singalila Ridge Trek

The Singalila Ridge Trek is one of the most spectacular  treks in India  and follows the northern ridge that separates the vast country from that of its smaller neighbor -  Nepal .

As you ascend up onto the ridge itself you're greeted with some of the most impressive vistas on earth. The high  Himalaya region stretches out in front of you as you gaze across at the world's five tallest mountains including Everest , Lhotse, Makalu and Kachenjunga.

Not only do you experience incredible views, you're also greeted with a wide array of flora and fauna along the trek. You'll hike up through mountain forests, past lovely areas of bamboo, camp among rhododendrons and hike high into mountain scrubland zones. Look out for the rare red panda and keep a sharp eye out for bears, boar and barking deer. If you're lucky you might spot some of the colorful pheasants along the route.

On the hike, you'll pass hamlets, teahouses and military check points as you will sometimes be trekking on the Nepalese side of the ridge. The trail is well defined and the trek can either be done with an operator or with a single guide - depending on your experience levels.

Please Note: The trek is moderately difficult due to the high altitude of the ridge which is constantly above 3,000 meters. The ascent to the ridge can be strenuous and we suggest having a good level of stamina to complete this trek. Accommodation is generally camping and the nights get very cold.

Regional Map

The Singalila Ridge is located on the north-south mountain ridge running from northwestern West Bengal through the region of Sikkim in the Indian part of the Himalayas.

Welcome to a definitive trek in Darjeeling -  Singalila Ridge Trek ! Only two hours from the city, the great way starts. Although not a far drive from the city, the path appears as though it is in no place, as you navigate from edge to edge. The beautiful Singalila Ridge interfaces the excellent Himalaya of Nepal to India. The feature of the trek is strolling this edge to Sandakphu (11,929 feet), the most noteworthy point in West Bengal, where you get stunning perspectives on the most elevated tops on earth.

Ascend from your tranquil sleep at Sandakphu and make a short movie to a perspective. From here, see Mount Everest (29,028 ft), Kanchenjunga (28,170 ft), Lhotse (27,940 ft), and Makalu (27,825 ft) in the entirety of their magnificence. It is truly outstanding, if not the best mountain in India. What another place would you be able to see 4 of the 5 most noteworthy tops on the planet in one clearing view?

Singalila National Park is one of India's best trekking regions. The scene, natural life, individuals, and each other piece of the experience make Singalila special and adorable. The path starts from Manebhanjan on the edges of Singalila National Park. Climb over and around the verdant, forested slopes before showing up at the desolate glades of Tumling and Kalapokhri. The mountains give a genuine feeling of point of view and we feel lowered just to be in their quality. Take a few minutes to simply respect them and take some photographs, however, photographs can't do this view equity.

The wonder doesn't stop. From Sandakphu to Phalut, the mountains stay with us. Indeed, the view from Phalut is about as entrancing as the day preceding. The fruitless open zone offers a route to an uncovered perspective of the lofty snow-topped pinnacles. In Phalut, we remain in a trekker's cabin, eye to eye with the terrific Himalayas. From Phalut, we trek through the beautiful view of Gorkhey and Timburey before recovering a ride to Darjeeling. In Darjeeling, we take you on a marvellous day voyage through the city's social attractions and top it off with a delightful supper.

Consistently on the trek (aside from at Phalut), we remain in teahouses possessed by neighbourhood families. This is one of the most important pieces of the trek. Find out about the way of life and individual families that run the cabins. At the homestay in Timburey, figure out how to make momos and other conventional neighbourhood top choices!

Best Time to Visit

The best seasons for this trek are Summer (April to June) and Autumn(October to November) when the climate conditions are moderately milder. The climate is charming, with moderate temperatures. During the favoured season, the climate gives the best for the trek; the climate stays moderate, and you can get the best out of the trek. The mountain scenes are without a doubt: staggering. The blossoming backwoods and shocking scene along the path are no less mysterious during the favoured season.

I chose (after a lot of research) Trekmunk for my first trek - The Hampta Pass and Chandratal Trek. And I am so really glad I did so. The trekker needs to only focus on the trek and the beautiful landscape around him/her. The rest of everything is taken care of by Trekmunk from day 1 till the end of the trek. Scrupulously managed logistics; no compromise on safety and security; experienced, intelligent and knowledgeable trek leaders; scrumptious meals; contingency and backup plans; etc. make Trekmunk an ideal choice to go trekking with. My trek was lead by Ashish Pathania, Prashant Reddy and Sanjay Thakur. The three are were thorough professionals. They were jolly, very helpful, experienced, knowledgeable, organized, and needless to say polite yet strict when needed. They played the most important roles in making sure our overall trekking experience was a wonderful one. Thank you Trekmunk for one of the most beautiful experiences I have had till date. Will see you guys soon.

I had the best time of my life at Sandakhphu Phalut trek arranged by Trekmunk. Literally I felt like I was in heaven and I was soo very happy. I will recommend everyone to opt for Trekmunk. I was a solo woman traveler and was a bit worried, but things went very smoothly and I enjoyed it a lot. I miss my fellow trekkers too. I am very satisfied with their arrangements.

I and my friends went to Markha Valley trek with Trekmunk and we all had a great time. Walking up and down the hill, coming across some beautiful sites was mesmerizing. Staying in tents was so much fun. And our guide had all the knowledge about the trek. Trekmunk is really good with its food and accommodation facilities. I highly recommend Trekmunk. Kudos to their Team.

Our 7 days trip to Meghalaya was a truly memorable experience. Thank you Trekmunk for arranging such an adventurous backpacking trip and a special thanks to Mohit Goswami our trip leader for giving us an experience of what true travelling is. From hitchhiking to traversing the unknown places to eating delicious Momo's to climbing 3000 steps, we did it all in those 7 days which came to end so quickly and none of us wanted to go back home. Such an experience where you just pick up your rucksacks and walk down the roads of a traveller could have been only possible because of Trekmunk!

I had an amazing trek with Trekmunk to Sandakphu November and December 2019. From the first moment of inquiry about the trek and all my questions were answered clearly and on time thanks to Dheeraj who managed to facilitate the trek quite well with his communication. Our guide Arpan was very experienced, calm, patient and very helpful to each trekker's needs in the group. He facilitated to find and hire a porter for me once I needed one although we were in the middle of the trail. He also arranged emergency transportation when I had to cut the trek and go back home for an urgent matter. I really enjoyed their service and I would like to repeat the same trek or try other treks with them again.

Sandakphu and Phalut Trek on Singalila Ridge:

The Sandakphu and Phalut trek, or the shorter Sandakphu trek , is a must to do trek for people looking to explore Darjeeling or Sikkim hills with breathtaking panoramas of Himalayan peaks. Our given itinerary follows the Singalila Ridge from South to North. For this reason, this trek is also called the “ Singalila Ridge Trek” .

sandakphu-phalut-a-himalayan-panoramic-route

About our trail:

Our trail reaches its highest point, Sandakphu, at ~ 3636 m/11926 ft. This is the highest point in West Bengal, in the district of Darjeeling. Phalut is another tabletop on the same ridge that is further north of Sandakphu, almost at the same height of ~ 3620 m. Due to its northerly position, i.e., its proximity to the high mountains, Phalut offers somewhat closer mountain views of the Sikkim and Nepal Himalayas.

One of the finest ridge trek in the Himalayas – Mesmerising sunrise and sunset views

As already said, the trail follows the famous Singalila Ridge, a prominent spur that runs southward from the Kanchenjunga massif. This ridge is the border between India and Nepal in the Eastern Himalayas. The east side of the ridge is India, and Nepal is on the west side. Although not as interior as some of the Sikkim treks that we arrange, this trail is still among one of the most scenically rewarding in the Indian Himalayas.

Below is a satellite map image showing an aerial view of the Singalila Ridge. You can easily see how open the vista is when you are walking along the ridge.

hiking-trail-on-singalila-ridge

You will get spectacular panoramic views of Nepal Himalayas including Kanchendzongha range, Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, Janu, Chamlang, Baruntse and a host of Sikkim peaks all seen in one stretch. You may absorb the serene “Sleeping Buddha” formation from multiple vantage points following our trail.

Trekking inside the Singalila National Park – the forests of Eastern Himalayas:

The Singalila National park area has rare species like Red Panda and is a birder’s paradise. Flowering of Rhododendrons and Magnolia turn the forest with red, pink and white shades during spring and foliage hue during autumn-fall.

Suggested Sandakphu & Phalut trek Itinerary 2023:

Our route follows the Singalila Ridge, which is the border of India and Nepal. Due to stay restrictions, non-Indians, i.e., foreigners, can’t stay in Nepal homestays or tea houses anymore like the Indians do. So the Indians and foreigners will have different itineraries.

Day 1: Drive from NJP railway station or Bagdogra airport to Chitrey   (~ 2200 m, 7200 ft) – 90 Km – 4 to 5 hours. Shared homestay accommodation. Foreigners can’t stay here, but 3 Km down at Maneybhanjung  (~ 1980 m/6500 ft). Day 2: Trek to Tumling (~ 2900 m/9500 ft) – 9 Km via Meghma ;– 5 to 6 hours. (Foreigners need to stay inside West Bengal, India at Tonglu GTA Trekkers Hut , shared dormitories ~ 3050 m/10000 ft.) Infograhics on Singalila Ridge trek:

From the below image you will get a general idea about the Singalila Ridge trek in Darjeeling that includes different variants and possibilities.  Note that foreigners/non Indians must stay within India.

singalila-ridge-infographics-trail-accommodation-in-india-nepal

Foreigners, i.e., non-Indians, must walk and nightstay on the Indian side of Singalila Ridge:

This is a teahouse-style trek that follows the famous Singalila Ridge, forming the border between Darjeeling (West Bengal) in India and Nepal. As a matter of fact, you can get better facilities and services in terms of accommodation, food, comfort, etc. on the Nepal side (homestay, lodge, and hotel).

Whereas on the Indian side, the area falls inside Singalila National Park and is a restricted area. Only basic government-made trekker huts are there along the trek route for accommodation at night. You will have more options for homestays and lodges once you are outside the core area.

Starting in December 2021, Indian authorities are not allowing foreigners/non Indian passport holders to stay in Nepal while walking on the Singalila Ridge. So for foreign nationals, the accommodation options are GTA-operated government huts within Singalila National Park. This is enforced on the spot by the Indian paramilitary personnel stationed at various checkpoints along the trail on the India-Nepal border.

You can’t stay inside Nepal, even if you have a Nepal visa. This is due to the fact that there are no “ passport control ” offices between India and Nepal along the trail.

So it is mandatory for foreigners to stay inside India and make a night halt at the GTA/Govt. Trekkers Hut while trekking inside Singalila National Park.

On the other hand, for Indian citizens, we arrange stays in Nepal teahouses, wherever possible, and their itinerary will be different than that of foreigners.

What are the accommodations during Sandakphu Phalut trek:

This is a “Tea House” trek, i.e we don’t camp inside Singalila National Park but stay in Homestay/Lodge available on the trail. As you should expect on a mountain trail, these are basic accommodation run by the local Nepali/Tibetan families. Rooms are dormitory bed type with triple/quad sharing or more. Beds and blankets are neat and clean. Don’t expect an attached toilet or running hot water anywhere.

Do we camp and stay in a tent?

No we don’t. As a matter of fact, none is supposed to camp within the boundary of Singalila National park. This trail inside national park is designed for years to run a Tea House mode trek, same as its neighbouring Nepal treks. If you prefer a pristine full camping trek, we do have more legitimate options for you. These treks lie further north to Phalut on the Singalila ridge inside Sikkim and  offer closer views of Sleeping Buddha and high mountains of Nepal and Sikkim.  Our less crowded  Phoktey Dara or Singalila Pass Phalut   trek will surely entice you for great camping experiences.

Regarding GTA/Foreigners accommodation on

Phalut has only one accommodation option. The Trekkers Hut is operated by GTA (Gorkha Territorial Administration), an govt. administrative body in the Darjeeling Hills. This can’t be booked online neither you can check availability unless you drop in to their office, either at Gorkha Bhavan, Saltlake Kolkata (near City Centre, Salt Lake) or Darjeeling, Silver Fir building office. More over it has a maximum capacity of 20 beds, and they keep few on hold for guides/porters/staff accompanying trekkers. There is NO private accommodation/lodge at Phalut or vicinity. Due to heavy demand mostly this is full in the season.

Is this trek suitable for the beginners?

Also we have noticed that beginners/first time trekkers are often finding it pretty difficult to cover the 21 Km trail from Sandakphu to Phalut. So considering both we either keep you at Phalut Trekkers Hut or at Sabarkum/Molley, a place 14 Km from Sandakphu on the way to Phalut. This is decided case to case as per each individual group. However the itinerary remains same and you reach Gorkhey via Phalut in case the accommodation is at Sabarkum/Molley.

Alternate shorter and easy Tour – Sandakphu trek:

Though the trail ahead of Sandakphu is Easy considering the terrain, but adding Phalut involves total 6 days of trek covering around 80 Km. Often it can be strenuous if not prepared well. Also beginners as well as experienced trekkers can find it exhausting to reach Phalut, 21 Km from Sandakphu in a day.

However we have started arranging a smaller version of this trail omitting Phalut from the itinerary. This is the shortened version of Singalila ridge trek and called “ Sandakphu Trek ” . The wonderful walk along the ridge is ideal for the beginners/first timers, who want to explore Darjeeling/Sikkim Himalayas. This essentially retains almost all the flavour that the Sandakphu and Phalut produces, certainly the not scenic walk to Phalut! However this is not a showstopper considering the trail is same (initial 3 days of trek) till Sandakphu. Sleeping Buddha, Famous trio (Everest Lhotse, Makalu), and numerous Sikkim and Nepal high Himalayan ranges can be observed.  The descent from Sandakphu to the beautiful village of Gurdum is similar in beauty that of  Phalut to Gorkhey trail. Finally the Sandakphu trek also ends at Srikhola same as the longer duration Phalut trail. Advantage of Sandakphu trek is this trail requires 4 days of trekking and can be done year long apart from the monsoon (June to September). The walk is not strenuous like Phalut and covers around 40 Km in 4 days which is indeed an Easy grade trek and can be completed comfortably by anyone who has got basic physical fitness and will to walk.

We strongly advice to check our “Sandakphu Trek” itinerary, who want a shorter and easier version of this trail without losing much.

A note on the motor route from Maneybhanjung to Sandakphu and Phalut and its impact:

darjeeling singalila ridge trek

Himalayan Trekkers is a fantastic tour operator that I highly recommend. They had provided an experienced and knowledgeable guide who will take you on the adventure of a lifetime. The treks are well-organized and the food is delicious. I especially appreciated the company’s commitment to sustainability and ethical tourism.

In short, Himalayan Trekkers is a great choice for anyone looking for a safe, enjoyable, and sustainable trekking experience in Sandakphu – Phalut trek route. Special mention: Dawa Drukpa is an awesome guide and Robin is an awesome porter, even better as people. Thanks Himalayan Trekkers.

darjeeling singalila ridge trek

We booked a 7D6N trek to Sandakphu & Phalut, and a driver for the following days to take us to Sikkim. The communication in advance was clear and swift. We had a great guide (Amar) and driver. We can recommend booking your trek through Himalaya Trekkers, but be aware of the more than basic conditions in the GTA huts run by the government, which are mandatory accommodation for foreigners.

An easy but rewarding trek which offers spectacular views of the big mountains including Everest and Kanchenjunga. This trek traverses along the Singalila ridge which forms the international border line between India and Nepal. It offers a good distant view of Mt. Everest (8850 m) accompanied by Lhotse (8501m) and Makalu (8475m) and a close view of Kanchenjunga (8586m). Kanchenjunga along with the surrounding ranges closely resembles a person sleeping and hence the view from Sandakphu is popularly called 'The Sleeping Buddha'. The Singalila ridge is actually an extension of one of the ridges that sweep down from the high snows of Kanchenjunga itself and the trek along this ridge is renowned as being one of the most scenically rewarding in the entire Himalayas. This area is also culturally diverse, with Tibetan, Mongolian, and Indians intermixed with immigrant Nepalese. Buddhism is the most popular religion and during the course of our trip there's immense chance of interaction with the warm locals at Trekker's Huts that dot this trail.

Flight to Bagdogra

  • Almost every trip begins with a flight from Delhi to Bagdogra. As it is the easiest way for your trek to the Darjeeling Singalila Ridge Trek.
  • Delhi is 1121 kilometers from Bagdogra Airport. The domestic airport of Bagdogra is located in Siliguri, West Bengal.
  • The airport is located at a height of 136m above sea level. It is operated by Indian Air Force.
  • The flying time is around 2 hours 20 minutes. It is the 17 th busiest airport in India.

Altitude sickness

Beyond 2,500m (8,000ft), Altitude sickness is a sneaky monster that may attack even the fittest trekkers. These demands do everything in your power to prepare for altitude trekking and take things carefully throughout your Darjeeling Singalila Ridge Trek journey. With increasing altitude, the amount of available oxygen decreases, which is the primary cause of high-altitude sickness .

So, you may suffer from different altitude sicknesses at an altitude of 4,600m. i.e., Acute Mountain sickness (AMS), High pulmonary edema (HAPE), High-altitude cerebral edema.

Your body requires time to adjust to thin air, so start at a lower altitude and work your way up. Some of the symptoms of Altitude sickness are:

  • Increased breathing.
  • Increased urination.
  • Restless sleep.
  • Periodic breathing at night because of altitude.
  • Dehydration.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Extreme fatigue.
  • Respiratory failure.
  • Cerebral edema.

Certain care should be made to ensure that the situation does not worsen. However, if the symptoms worsen, you may need to return to a lower height and seek medical help. There are, however, several other precautions you may take while trekking to Darjeeling Singalila Ridge Trek to lessen your risk of altitude sickness.

  • Trekkers can modify their bodies by slowly and gradually climbing, as our bodies require time to adjust to the oxygen level. For high altitude trekking, at least one day of acclimatization rest is essential, and you should ascend as high as possible before returning to a lower altitude for the night.
  • You should do various strength training exercises such as running, cycling, jogging, push-ups, and go to the gym to acquire strength and stamina for your adventure.
  • As the air gets increasingly thin, an increase in elevation reduces oxygen levels, and in the Darjeeling Singalila Ridge Trek, an increase in altitude also means less vegetation. The consumption of alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, and tobacco decreases the body’s water content.
  • The greatest remedy is to always stay hydrated. On your walk, instead of drinking cooled water, drink warm water.
  • Diamox is the most effective altitude sickness medication; thus, you should bring a subscription with you on the trek. However, you should consult with your physician to see whether it is advantageous.

Things to know before traveling to Darjeeling Singalila Ridge.

Drinking-Water in Darjeeling.

Trekkers must hydrate their bodies at a higher altitude than in lower elevations to avoid dehydration and altitude sickness. Lack of fluid can be the main hindrance during the trek. You should hydrate your body with at least 3-4 liters of water daily (Tea, soup, or normal drinking water).

There are many villages on the way to Singalila Ridge so you will not have a problem with getting drinking water. Springwater is also available along the route, but is quite not safe, as you are not used to the local water, and drinking it may result in Diarrhoea. So, we recommend you drink either boiled water or bottled water. Coldwater is free of charge, but for boiled water and bottled water, you have to pay a certain amount. However, if you are refilling your bottle with normal water, treat it with purifying tablets or a water filter (Steripen) before drinking. Plastic water Bottles and Polystyrene are banned throughout the state.

Every day, carry enough water for the day before beginning the trek. We recommend you bring a Reusable water bottle of 2-3ltr or a water pouch favorable for both hot and cold water.

Here are some ways that you can use to make the water drinkable.

  • Boiled water

Boiling water is the best way to purify the water. As we are climbing to a higher altitude you need to boil the water for about 3-minute and season it with a pinch of salt before drinking. You can get free tap water in the teahouse/guesthouses but for boiled water, it cost a certain amount.

  • Purification tablets or electrolyte powder.

Purification tablets like chlorine or iodine tablets are commonly used tablets by trekkers to disinfect the water. 1 tablet is enough for a liter of water. It takes around 30 min for the tablets to dissolve and become drinkable. Water purified by tablets may leave a taste in your mouth.

Electrolyte powder is another option. Electrolyte powder is a better way to purify water than tablets because electrolyte powder contains minerals such as salt, Potassium, Magnesium, which are important for your body during the trek.

  • UV Light water purifier/ SteriPEN.

It is a simple, effective, economic, and environment-friendly way to purify water. It kills the bacteria and virus within 10 sec by exposing them to ultraviolet light using Steripen, without changing the flavor of the water. This is a highly recommended means of purifying water (a one-time investment).

Electricity and Internet facility.

Electricity facility.

In this trek to Darjeeling Singalila Ridge Trek, you won’t be in darkness. The area is either powered by hydroelectricity or solar power lights/batteries.

Most of the villages/areas on the trek are powered by local hydroelectricity so there will be a charging socket in your rooms and you will have no problem with electricity and recharging your batteries. However, few areas/villages rely on Solar panels or solar power batteries for electricity that is enough to light the bulbs and charge small devices. And there will be no charging socket in your room. There is a commonplace for charging usually in the dining area. You might be able to charge a normal mobile set, camera battery, and power bank. Some allow it for free while some will charge a certain amount. Solar battery power might harm your device, so charge it at your own risk. As a result, it is recommended that you bring a power bank and spare camera batteries. If possible, less usage of a device with Low brightness, Wi-Fi and GPS off, and Airplane mode.

Internet Facility and Network Service

Only in the lower area in this trek, you will have Wi-Fi/internet access. However, check with each teahouse/lodge where you’ll be having lunch or staying overnight, if they have Wi-Fi, if you’re lucky, enjoy the Wi-Fi. Some provide it free of charge while some charge an amount. But as you climb to higher altitudes, the other way to connect by the internet is via. your cellular network’s data package.

There are many telecommunications services in India, such as Vodafone, Airtel, Jio, BSNL, however, Airtel telecommunication service is a highly preferred network over other networks. It has a stable signal range. With the Airtel 4G service, you will be connected during your journey. Buy the Airtel 4G sim card from the stores in any store in Darjeeling. By taking data packages you can use the cellular and internet service throughout the journey.

Document needed to buy a sim card.

For Foreigner = 1 passport size photo, Passport photocopy, or valid identity card.

Get up, have breakfast, pack your backpack and get ready to start your day’s walk by 7 a.m. You need to start your trek early to avoid the scorching sun and to reach your overnight destination on time/ before dawn.

Later in the evening, you will have your dinner together. After dinner, your guide will give some short briefings about the next day’s trek regarding when you must get up, when we have to start our trek the next day, where we will stay the next day, how many hours we have to walk and so on.

During this 8-day trek to Darjeeling Singalila Ridge, you will walk for a minimum of 4 hrs to a maximum of 7 hrs in a day.
